- 0:17Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio.
- 0:21Speaker 1: A few poll questions to get the show started today. Taylor,
- 0:26Speaker 1: please put it on the pole at Steve got seven
- 0:28Speaker 1: ninety one X. When Luca pulled a Hammy, was Nico
- 0:32Speaker 1: smiling on the inside? Also, are you a bench below
- 0:39Speaker 1: the court guy?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yes?
- 0:40Speaker 4: Or no?
- 0:41Speaker 5: Hm?
- 0:42Speaker 4: I don't like it. It scares me.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Also put this on the pole, tailor. Is Lloy Vaught
- 0:48Speaker 1: sitting around going, hey.
- 0:51Speaker 4: What about us? Oh?
- 0:55Speaker 5: Yes?
- 0:56Speaker 4: And the other Michigan you double double machine? Yes?
- 0:59Speaker 5: Yes, what do you mean? What about us?
- 1:01Speaker 6: Is nobody mentioning Lloyd Vaught or in that team in particular,
- 1:04Speaker 6: like that team has been mentioned, just the Fab.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Five getting all the you know praise.
- 1:09Speaker 1: They didn't win anything, Lloyd Vaught, Terry Mills, Rameil Robinson,
- 1:12Speaker 1: Glenn Rice.
- 1:13Speaker 4: They won a national championship, No one talks about it.
- 1:16Speaker 5: If it was the first question on that pole.
- 1:19Speaker 1: When Luca pulled a Hammy, was Nico smiling on the inside?
- 1:23Speaker 5: Does anybody know what Nico's doing anymore?
- 1:26Speaker 4: I'm smiling on the inside.
- 1:27Speaker 6: I just told you I saw a video of him
- 1:29Speaker 6: at an airport and he's got a fly commercial these days,
- 1:32Speaker 6: and so that's not the greatest. I'm pretty sure he's
- 1:35Speaker 6: just trying to be in hiding as much as possible.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Last poll here Justin Jackson going to join us, but
- 1:39Speaker 1: Monti Jones going to join us an hour number two.
- 1:42Speaker 4: You could spend a day with one group, the Fab five.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Or the starting five from last night's National Championship game.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Who you got.
- 1:51Speaker 5: Fab five currently? I'm sorry for the follow up.
- 1:53Speaker 1: So this is the modern Crently this is Fab five?
- 1:55Speaker 1: Then this is the modern day Fab five. What happened
- 1:58Speaker 1: last night? Those are five guys all came through the
- 2:00Speaker 1: transfer portal playing their first season together. It's the modern
- 2:04Speaker 1: day equivalent of the Fab five. We're never going to
- 2:06Speaker 1: see five freshmen come in at the same time and
- 2:09Speaker 1: make a run to the championship game and then lose.
- 2:11Speaker 4: We're never going to see that again.
- 2:13Speaker 1: But you had five guys come together through the portal
- 2:15Speaker 1: from different schools playing in their first season together.
- 2:19Speaker 6: And they went on to win a national championship instead
- 2:21Speaker 6: of the Fab five since their transfers.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Can we call them the trans five? No, I don't
- 2:26Speaker 5: think we can do that.
- 2:27Speaker 4: I don't know, can we I don't think we can.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Dangerous Gape eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox. That
- 2:34Speaker 1: is eight seven to seven ninety nine on Fox again.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Justin Jackson going to join us because Taylor's producing the show.
- 2:40Speaker 1: He's producing his show tomorrow. Willie Randolph.
- 2:44Speaker 7: Wow, I would love Willie Randolph.
- 2:46Speaker 4: I know you did.
- 2:47Speaker 7: Anybody got a number for him?
- 2:49Speaker 8: I do?
- 2:49Speaker 9: Willie Randolph. I graduated with his daughter. He was the
- 2:52Speaker 9: commencement speaker at my graduation.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Gosh, I wish you hadn't told him.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Let me seriously, so, Willie Randolph, I was joking seriously
- 3:00Speaker 1: to be on the show tomorrow.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Is it your thoughts last night? Dan Hurley going for.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Three national championships over the last four years.
- 3:08Speaker 4: He still has two. It's pretty good.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Made it into the final game three times in four years.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I'm not certain how many people like him. But the
- 3:15Speaker 1: alternative is, you know, is a coach that people from
- 3:20Speaker 1: Michigan that people find to be very boring.
- 3:23Speaker 6: I mean so Yukon has done so much winning overall
- 3:28Speaker 6: but also lately under Hurley. Yeah that I forgot that
- 3:32Speaker 6: they won back to back championships, like when they were
- 3:35Speaker 6: going for three out of four because I said this
- 3:37Speaker 6: and thank you guys for not noticing and you know,
- 3:39Speaker 6: picking up my mistakes. But I said at some point
- 3:42Speaker 6: about the Gators not repeating. I think I said the
- 3:45Speaker 6: last team to repeat won't be the next team to repeat. Yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 6: completely forgetting that Yukon just repeated a couple of years ago,
- 3:53Speaker 6: and so my bad for that retroactively. You know what's
- 3:58Speaker 6: crazy is last night felt like a game that Yukon
- 4:02Speaker 6: was going to steal, Yes and forever be that championship team, right,
- 4:07Speaker 6: the team that had the grit that found away.
- 4:10Speaker 5: But Michigan was ridiculous.
- 4:12Speaker 6: Like when I said this yesterday, I regret sounding ridiculously surprised.
- 4:17Speaker 5: When Seth Davis pig Michigan.
- 4:20Speaker 6: It all so the level of you know that my
- 4:23Speaker 6: voice got when I said, really he picked them.
- 4:26Speaker 4: To be fair to us.
- 4:27Speaker 1: We were fresh off the Arizona Sweet sixteen victory. We
- 4:29Speaker 1: thought they were the best team in the country, and
- 4:31Speaker 1: we learned that they weren't.
- 4:33Speaker 5: We were drunk off of Arizona. Let's be real.
- 4:35Speaker 6: And then then you start realizing, oh, no, Michigan has
- 4:39Speaker 6: been the best team in this tournament the entire time.
- 4:42Speaker 5: Yes.
- 4:42Speaker 6: And I remember back in two thousand and was it
- 4:45Speaker 6: six or seven, which everyone was the first one of
- 4:47Speaker 6: the Gators back to back championships and Jason Williams White
- 4:50Speaker 6: Chocolate Jason Williams was on the Miami Heat at the time,
- 4:53Speaker 6: and as a former Gator we used to chat about.
- 4:55Speaker 5: All the time.
- 4:56Speaker 6: And after the second round of that tournament and this
- 4:59Speaker 6: is the Gators that weren't supposed to win it that
- 5:01Speaker 6: year that played George Washington et cetera second game of
- 5:04Speaker 6: that tournament, we both looked at each other and said,
- 5:07Speaker 6: they're the best team in the tournament. Yeah, And that's
- 5:10Speaker 6: because I was watching intently, right, If I was watching
- 5:13Speaker 6: intently as closely as I was that tournament, for this tournament,
- 5:17Speaker 6: Michigan was so obvious.
- 5:19Speaker 5: It was so obvious. They're huge.
- 5:21Speaker 6: They can't like, it doesn't matter what your bigs are,
- 5:24Speaker 6: you can't really get great shots around that size. And
- 5:27Speaker 6: then they have enough guard play, enough shooting, and enough
- 5:31Speaker 6: talent around them where it's just like it's a better
- 5:34Speaker 6: version of last year's Gators.
- 5:37Speaker 7: Marrow looked like he was eight foot five out there.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Yeah, so big.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Yes, you mentioned the elevated courts or whatever, the benches
- 5:44Speaker 6: that are a little bit lower.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Vanderbilt has that right at their home arena.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 4: I don't like it.
- 5:49Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I hate it at Vanderbilt because the benches
- 5:51Speaker 6: are on the baseline and it's just like I gotta
- 5:53Speaker 6: yell all the way over there to talk to my coach.
- 5:55Speaker 6: But that somehow, some way makes the players look like
- 5:59Speaker 6: well obviously reasons, I guess now that you think about it,
- 6:02Speaker 6: that they're on a stage and then you throw in
- 6:04Speaker 6: their height and they look even taller.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Somehow.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I was terrified for Tracy Wilson. I was anyone else?
- 6:10Speaker 1: Put it on the pole tailor where you're terrified.
- 6:12Speaker 4: For Tracy will Wolfson.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Doesn't she do the thing every year where she takes
- 6:15Speaker 6: a picture next to the tallest player that she interviewed,
- 6:17Speaker 6: and it's just.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Laugh out loud and funny. The discrepancy.
- 6:21Speaker 7: So Stu, you know who I feel bad for today.
- 6:24Speaker 7: I feel bad for Reid on Yukon. Yeah, because he
- 6:27Speaker 7: transferred from Michigan to Yukon and now he's been at
- 6:33Speaker 7: Michigan and Yukon now and in his four years, those
- 6:37Speaker 7: teams have won three titles. He has zero.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Just can't get it right. I mean, he just can't
- 6:42Speaker 4: the problem wherever he goes.
- 6:46Speaker 7: He was great on the boards. I don't know if
- 6:48Speaker 7: he was the problem.
- 6:49Speaker 6: He was so nice about his situation, and he was
- 6:54Speaker 6: like whenever he talks about he's like Noel Will to Michigan.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Love those guys.
- 6:58Speaker 6: He had a great chance at Yukon, looked amazing, was huge,
- 7:02Speaker 6: and the Duke comeback win only to come up short.
- 7:05Speaker 1: But that seems impossible that he would be on both
- 7:08Speaker 1: those teams. They won three national championships in four years
- 7:11Speaker 1: and he hasn't won one.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Just flip his time with both teams and he'd have
- 7:15Speaker 5: three championships right now.
- 7:16Speaker 4: And if I'm reading mikey a correctly, he is the problem.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Mikeyye doesn't care how well he played last night, doesn't
- 7:22Speaker 1: care how hard he hit the boards last night.
- 7:24Speaker 4: He's the problem. If he's on your team, you lose.
- 7:27Speaker 10: There you go future, Nick.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Jetan whatever.
- 7:32Speaker 7: To further your point, Michigan was the best team all tournament.
- 7:37Speaker 7: But to a lot of people that watch college basketball,
- 7:40Speaker 7: Michigan was the best team all year, and in a
- 7:43Speaker 7: sport like March Madness, a sport like college basketball, it
- 7:46Speaker 7: does feel kind of rare to get to the end
- 7:48Speaker 7: of the season and be like, oh, the unquestioning best
- 7:52Speaker 7: team won the tournament. With how random it is to
- 7:55Speaker 7: a point where it does feel like an extra reason
- 7:58Speaker 7: to celebrate this Michigan team.
- 8:00Speaker 6: Just dating back to last year, for example, there's no
- 8:02Speaker 6: way anybody in the first three months of the season
- 8:05Speaker 6: would have said Florida was your national champion and then
- 8:07Speaker 6: they just got hot at the right time. This was
- 8:10Speaker 6: absolutely one of those years from start to finish, the
- 8:12Speaker 6: three losses where almost nothing, you know, just the difference
- 8:18Speaker 6: that the point differential in these games in the tournament
- 8:21Speaker 6: just goes to show you when they're locked in, doesn't
- 8:24Speaker 6: matter the opponent, this team has like a fifteen to
- 8:26Speaker 6: twenty point advantage.
- 8:28Speaker 7: Stu, I have a ridiculous stat here, Okay, Michigan last
- 8:31Speaker 7: night became the first team since two thousand and nine
- 8:36Speaker 7: right to beat Yukon in the sweet sixteen or later.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Wow, I mean, listen to your point about who wins
- 8:42Speaker 1: these tournaments. Dan Hurley said it it's a one game scenario.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Once you get to the NCAA tournament, you have to
- 8:48Speaker 1: win six one game scenarios. If we were playing Michigan
- 8:52Speaker 1: in a best of seven, of course you would take Michigan.
- 8:54Speaker 1: But in a one game scenario, anything could happen, and rarely,
- 8:58Speaker 1: and Hurley said this, does the best team in college
- 9:01Speaker 1: basketball win the national championship. You can go back to
- 9:05Speaker 1: you know, NC State winning it, Villanova beating Georgetown. Georgetown
- 9:09Speaker 1: was the best team in the country that year, but
- 9:11Speaker 1: in a one game scenario, Villanova could slow it down,
- 9:15Speaker 1: play four corners on offense, and milk the clock and
- 9:18Speaker 1: win that game.
- 9:19Speaker 4: And that's what happened.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And so you rarely get the best team winning the
- 9:23Speaker 1: NCAA tournament.
- 9:24Speaker 6: It's odd And that's why I feel like coaching a
- 9:28Speaker 6: little bit more important in college basketball in terms of
- 9:30Speaker 6: winning the championship, yes, than it is in NBA basketball,
- 9:35Speaker 6: because over a seven game series, you put you know,
- 9:37Speaker 6: eight talented NBA, smart NBA players out there, they can
- 9:40Speaker 6: figure it out from one game to the next. In
- 9:42Speaker 6: a one game setting, your coach has to have you
- 9:45Speaker 6: absolutely ready, and Taylor not to go off on a
- 9:48Speaker 6: side tangent here. But the more I think about the
- 9:51Speaker 6: Michael Malone hire, the more I like it for UNC
- 9:54Speaker 6: because he's just established as somebody you have to listen to,
- 9:58Speaker 6: and when you do listen to him, he hammers home
- 10:01Speaker 6: defensive principles and wants you to play that hard all
- 10:04Speaker 6: the time. And frankly, if you're a college kid with
- 10:07Speaker 6: any sort of skill and you play that hard and
- 10:08Speaker 6: listen to him, you're gonna do well.
- 10:09Speaker 4: I think Taylor is starting to come around to Michael Malone.
- 10:12Speaker 7: Yeah, warming up. I wish you would go by Mike
- 10:14Speaker 7: Malone sometimes, just because it's a little it's a lot
- 10:17Speaker 7: easier to just say Mike Malone when you're talking as
- 10:20Speaker 7: much as we are.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I don't have to call him Michael, do I Because
- 10:22Speaker 1: I'm not going to call him Michael. I mean, he's
- 10:24Speaker 1: Mike Malone.
- 10:24Speaker 7: I call him coach.
- 10:25Speaker 4: I call Mike Maloney.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Well what all the time?
- 10:29Speaker 6: When did we stop saying coach something and start calling
- 10:32Speaker 6: them by their full names? Because I remember back in
- 10:34Speaker 6: the day, like even in college, we were encouraged to say, hey,
- 10:37Speaker 6: coach Spurrier or coach Meyer.
- 10:41Speaker 4: I think if you're a coach or a coach for life.
- 10:43Speaker 4: I mean, that's it. Yeah, you tell you think that.
- 10:45Speaker 6: Yeah, But I'm just wondering when we started using full
- 10:48Speaker 6: names on coaches, because it used to be understood it
- 10:50Speaker 6: it's cool if we just call him coach or coach
- 10:52Speaker 6: and his last name.
- 10:53Speaker 7: I think at some point these big jay journalists started
- 10:57Speaker 7: pushing back on that, being like, hey, I went to
- 10:59Speaker 7: journal in school. I'm not calling anybody coach. And then
- 11:02Speaker 7: somebody said it disrespectful. Somebody said it to me.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Are you looking at is he?
- 11:07Speaker 7: Somebody said it to Dion Sanders, and Dion was like,
- 11:10Speaker 7: call me coach. Yeah, well, and then it's right, yep, exactly,
- 11:13Speaker 7: coach Prime. I'm with him.
- 11:14Speaker 6: Well, he was specifically wanted you to call him coach Prime,
- 11:17Speaker 6: which to me is a little bit of an issue.
- 11:19Speaker 6: But in terms of calling somebody coach versus their first name,
- 11:24Speaker 6: I kind of understand that. Like, I don't think that
- 11:26Speaker 6: you're demeaning the journalist by saying, hey, call me coach.
- 11:30Speaker 6: It's just what you're used to. It's just what you
- 11:32Speaker 6: want to hear, and I'm totally fine with it. It's
- 11:34Speaker 6: not disrespectful of the person calling you coach.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I sent a text to Phil Martelli Junior, who joined
- 11:40Speaker 1: US a couple of weeks.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Ago, and he's gonna a me more sports radio.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Well, I sent them a text. I sent it as
- 11:45Speaker 1: coach Martelli. He said, call me Phil. I said, I
- 11:47Speaker 1: will not do that, and he said, okay, because I
- 11:50Speaker 1: respect the coaches.
- 11:51Speaker 4: I do.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Once you're a coach, you're always a coach. I mean,
- 11:54Speaker 1: listen the bartender and cheers. We called him coach. Well
- 11:57Speaker 1: after he was done coaching and he was bartending. I
- 12:00Speaker 1: don't think coachman coach how about that.
- 12:03Speaker 5: I'm not gonna lie. Until this moment, I did not
- 12:06Speaker 5: know he was a coach.
- 12:08Speaker 1: But I think if you're a coach, you have earned
- 12:10Speaker 1: You've earned that. They all want to be called coach.
- 12:13Speaker 1: They do, don't they. I think, well, you think Bobby
- 12:16Speaker 1: Knight wanted to be called Bobby Get out of here.
- 12:18Speaker 6: I think college coaches, in particular, because they're you know,
- 12:22Speaker 6: they're athletes, their pupils will call.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Them coach more often than not. It just feels right.
- 12:27Speaker 6: And when you're moving from your players to the journalists,
- 12:31Speaker 6: I don't mind just requesting it. Like if it's an
- 12:33Speaker 6: ego thing, fine, it's not gonna hurt my ego to
- 12:36Speaker 6: call you coach, just answer my questions.
- 12:39Speaker 7: Is he One of the other things I've seen what
- 12:40Speaker 7: Michael Malone is that Mike one of the biggest complaints
- 12:45Speaker 7: of him in the NBA was it was kind of
- 12:47Speaker 7: his way or the highway correct, and some people do
- 12:50Speaker 7: think that will translate well to the college basketball world,
- 12:54Speaker 7: where you're not really having to deal You're having to
- 12:56Speaker 7: deal with the nil and recruiting, but you're not really
- 12:59Speaker 7: having to deal with the ego so much. Once they're
- 13:01Speaker 7: on campus.
- 13:02Speaker 6: You pretty much only have to deal with in terms
- 13:05Speaker 6: of any sort of egos colliding is your own assistance.
- 13:08Speaker 6: And if you hire people, maybe you know the ad,
- 13:11Speaker 6: but he's not going to come tell you basketball in denounced.
- 13:14Speaker 5: He's just going to deal with the whole program.
- 13:16Speaker 6: So yeah, I think if you can hire assistance that
- 13:19Speaker 6: you can communicate properly with this is exactly the arena
- 13:24Speaker 6: for him because it is his way or the highway.
- 13:26Speaker 6: As it is with most college coaches. They don't take
- 13:29Speaker 6: a lot of anything from anybody and it's just their way,
- 13:33Speaker 6: and frankly, the second it shows to work, then they're
- 13:36Speaker 6: just going to dig in and do it even more
- 13:38Speaker 6: and it's going to double down, et cetera, et cetera.
- 13:40Speaker 5: So you almost have to establish that if you're a
- 13:42Speaker 5: college coach.
- 13:44Speaker 1: The most impressive thing about Michigan, if you asked Dan
- 13:46Speaker 1: Hurley before the game, where do you want this game played,
- 13:50Speaker 1: meaning in terms of numbers score, he would tell you
- 13:53Speaker 1: in the sixties that's the best chance I have at
- 13:56Speaker 1: beating Michigan. And it was sixty nine to sixty three,
- 13:58Speaker 1: and he's still lost. Michigan defends very well and Michigan's
- 14:03Speaker 1: best player was hurt, and they still got it done
- 14:05Speaker 1: and they still won the national championship.
- 14:07Speaker 6: So is nobody saying what I think I'm about to
- 14:10Speaker 6: say because they like to be very nice to these
- 14:14Speaker 6: college players.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Hey, Alex Caraban hit a shot man, that.
- 14:19Speaker 6: Dude was I think he was zero for five before
- 14:22Speaker 6: that one that he hit to get the Duke rally going,
- 14:24Speaker 6: So he was what one for six maybe one for
- 14:26Speaker 6: five in that game, and this when he ends.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Up three for ten.
- 14:28Speaker 5: Two of those who are pretty late and they kind
- 14:30Speaker 5: of nothing.
- 14:31Speaker 6: Situation, My guy, if you're the senior that everybody loves,
- 14:35Speaker 6: give me some moments in the last game.
- 14:37Speaker 4: I am so proud of you. I really I've never
- 14:39Speaker 4: been more attracted to you.
- 14:41Speaker 7: He is he When when I have Michigan in the
- 14:45Speaker 7: bracket pool to win and I didn't hedge before, I'm
- 14:49Speaker 7: going into that game and I'm counting, I'm counting the money.
- 14:52Speaker 7: When Michigan's up double digits, then they cut it to four,
- 14:55Speaker 7: Yukon starts pressing. Caravan puts up a three to cut
- 14:59Speaker 7: it to yep, and my heart dropped to the floor.
- 15:04Speaker 7: And then I saw it clang off the rim and
- 15:05Speaker 7: I was like.
- 15:06Speaker 3: That's God.
- 15:08Speaker 6: Even the one where the fast break where they could
- 15:10Speaker 6: have cut it back to four again, and they blew
- 15:12Speaker 6: that one because they kind of rushed the shot a
- 15:14Speaker 6: little bit when the defense was coming. They could have
- 15:16Speaker 6: slowed it down. I was like, Man, Yukon has had
- 15:18Speaker 6: so many opportunities, and that's why I said they're so
- 15:22Speaker 6: well coached. They were so ready to steal this one,
- 15:25Speaker 6: but it just wasn't meant to be.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Taylor the Sea and Caravan stands for clank. He's been
- 15:33Speaker 4: to three.
- 15:34Speaker 7: Final fours in four it it's also a cab Oh.
- 15:37Speaker 4: I don't care, that's the joke.

- 15:42Speaker 5: it knew.
- 15:44Speaker 4: But I can't believe we're passing that kid today. I
- 15:46Speaker 4: mean he went to three title games in four years
- 15:50Speaker 4: and won.
- 15:50Speaker 7: Two of them.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Well, they're gonna have to replace him, Yes, Justin Jackson

- 16:42Speaker 1: CONSETTSUS First Team All American, played at Carolina.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Taylor loves him. He loves Taylor, and he's doing media
- 16:48Speaker 4: work for phil as MBA. He hasn't an NBA champion
- 16:51Speaker 4: as well. I love that app. And he's doing media.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Stuff for the Field of sixty eight. What are you
- 16:55Speaker 1: doing with Field of sixty eight?
- 16:56Speaker 3: Man, I'm just filling it whenever they need me.
- 17:01Speaker 11: And then I guess at the start of January, I
- 17:03Speaker 11: started with the ACC network too, So we're just kind
- 17:05Speaker 11: of seeing where this goes.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Man.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I see your jersey from college hanging right behind you
- 17:10Speaker 1: on the wall. Do you have a jersey hanging anywhere
- 17:12Speaker 1: in Chapel Hill.
- 17:15Speaker 3: It's somewhere up there.
- 17:16Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm pretty sure if you walk in the gym
- 17:18Speaker 11: you can find it somewhere, but I'm not totally sure
- 17:20Speaker 11: where it might be.
- 17:21Speaker 1: When you say somewhere, you mean in the rafters of
- 17:23Speaker 1: the Dean Dome, right, I mean yeah.
- 17:25Speaker 11: I'm pretty sure it's up there with some with some
- 17:28Speaker 11: other other jerseys that they decided to hang up.
- 17:30Speaker 3: So I'm definitely blessed for that.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Okay, Taylor, would you like to tell Justin where your
- 17:34Speaker 1: jersey is hanging in Chapel Hill?
- 17:36Speaker 4: Go ahead?
- 17:37Speaker 7: So I have one at Pantana Bob's, and then one
- 17:39Speaker 7: at the pizza reap three.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Be more specific, Yes, right next to the bathroom pantana.
- 17:44Speaker 7: Bob that.
- 17:47Speaker 3: It's a legend, so I can see it. I can
- 17:49Speaker 3: definitely see it.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I want to start with the National Championship Game, but
- 17:53Speaker 1: I feel like that would be a waste of times.
- 17:54Speaker 4: I know Taylor wants me to ask you about Mike Maloney.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Mike Maloney, Michael alone becoming the next head coach at
- 18:01Speaker 1: North Carolina. It's a totally on North Carolina thing to do,
- 18:05Speaker 1: to go outside.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Of the family. What were your thoughts.
- 18:09Speaker 11: I mean, I was shocked at first, but then whenever
- 18:11Speaker 11: you start to you start to break down the fact
- 18:13Speaker 11: that his daughter is at.
- 18:14Speaker 3: School when he was fired.
- 18:16Speaker 11: If I'm not mistaken, he did a lot of He
- 18:18Speaker 11: spent a good amount of time around the program, whether
- 18:21Speaker 11: that was at practices with the coaches, things like that.
- 18:26Speaker 11: So once I thought about that and added that up,
- 18:28Speaker 11: I wasn't too shocked. Now I am shocked because in
- 18:31Speaker 11: my opinion, I didn't think he should have been fired
- 18:33Speaker 11: from the NBA. So I was a little more shocked
- 18:36Speaker 11: from the standpoint of if he's getting back into coaching,
- 18:38Speaker 11: I'm sure there's NBA jobs available, but look, we'll take them.
- 18:42Speaker 3: We'll definitely take them.
- 18:43Speaker 11: I think a lot of people are excited to kind
- 18:45Speaker 11: of see what his name brings. Obviously his coaching speaks
- 18:48Speaker 11: for itself, being an NBA champion, but kind of what
- 18:51Speaker 11: he brings and kind of what the new look of
- 18:53Speaker 11: the Tarios will look like.
- 18:54Speaker 6: Justin I kind of want to circle back to the
- 18:57Speaker 6: previous coach and obviously you want a championship with Roy.
- 19:01Speaker 6: What was the problem then with Hubert? What wasn't the
- 19:04Speaker 6: same from one coach to the next.
- 19:08Speaker 3: I mean, it's tough.
- 19:09Speaker 11: Coach Williams, in my opinion, is, if not the best,
- 19:12Speaker 11: one of the best college basketball coaches of all time, right,
- 19:15Speaker 11: So to have somebody come in right after that, it's
- 19:18Speaker 11: going to be some really massive shoes to fill. When
- 19:21Speaker 11: you look at Coach Davis's, you know, five years, most
- 19:25Speaker 11: people would say it was a pretty successful five years
- 19:27Speaker 11: of coaching, right. And I think that's what's so difficult
- 19:31Speaker 11: for the coaches that come through North Carolina is when
- 19:34Speaker 11: you talk about the standard, the standard's pretty high, right,
- 19:37Speaker 11: and that standard was set from not just Coach Williams,
- 19:40Speaker 11: Coach Smith, all the coaches that have come through and
- 19:43Speaker 11: the players that have come through. And so I think
- 19:45Speaker 11: the difficult part was people had this image of what,
- 19:49Speaker 11: you know, that standard of North Carolina basketball is, and
- 19:52Speaker 11: I think at times didn't take into account the changing
- 19:55Speaker 11: landscape of college basketball as well, right, And I think
- 19:59Speaker 11: that's kind of where you saw it. And then obviously
- 20:01Speaker 11: that loss to VCU was a tough one. And I
- 20:04Speaker 11: think when that happened, I mean I've said this multiple times.
- 20:07Speaker 11: If they win, and they even go on to lose
- 20:09Speaker 11: by thirty to Illinois, I don't think we're having the
- 20:11Speaker 11: discussion of Mike Malone being the head coach, right, I
- 20:14Speaker 11: think we're talking about what transfers are we going to
- 20:16Speaker 11: get in, what recruits are coming in, that whole sort
- 20:19Speaker 11: of thing. And so I think that's the difficult part
- 20:21Speaker 11: of it was. I think the VCU game for a
- 20:23Speaker 11: lot of people, especially in the decision making process, kind
- 20:27Speaker 11: of saw that as you know, do we make the
- 20:30Speaker 11: decision to go in a different route or do we
- 20:32Speaker 11: bring them back?
- 20:32Speaker 3: And obviously, you know they decided to go in a
- 20:35Speaker 3: different route.
- 20:35Speaker 7: Justin when they're talking about candidates for the North Carolina job,
- 20:39Speaker 7: one of the things that always comes up is they
- 20:41Speaker 7: have to understand what it means to be a part
- 20:44Speaker 7: of the Carolina family, even if they're not a part
- 20:46Speaker 7: of that Carolina family directly. What does that Carolina family
- 20:51Speaker 7: look like to you and kind of mean to you?
- 20:54Speaker 11: I mean, it looks different for me and probably the
- 20:56Speaker 11: majority of former players, right it looks like going back
- 20:58Speaker 11: in the summer and playing pick up. It looks like
- 21:00Speaker 11: going back for camp, playing in the camp game versus
- 21:02Speaker 11: the current players coming back for games throughout the season
- 21:06Speaker 11: and kind of feeling the love and walking through that
- 21:08Speaker 11: tunnel and feeling that that, to me is what Carolina
- 21:12Speaker 11: family is about.
- 21:14Speaker 3: But it also goes deeper.
- 21:15Speaker 11: Than that, right, Like I'll never forget my first time
- 21:17Speaker 11: playing against Marvin Williams in the NBA.
- 21:19Speaker 3: And I had really met.
- 21:20Speaker 11: Marvin probably once or twice before playing against him, and
- 21:25Speaker 11: you know, we met up at half court during warm
- 21:27Speaker 11: ups and it was as if we had interacted a
- 21:29Speaker 11: ton before, right, And so it just goes deeper than that,
- 21:33Speaker 11: And so I think that's something that can translate. Obviously
- 21:36Speaker 11: he doesn't have a connection other than his daughter playing volleyball,
- 21:39Speaker 11: but I think it can go it can stay the
- 21:42Speaker 11: same even with somebody new it the head.
- 21:45Speaker 6: Justin you had really high praise there for Roy Williams. Obviously,
- 21:48Speaker 6: I don't think anybody would argue with you. I'm curious
- 21:50Speaker 6: from what you've learned or what you've figured out or
- 21:53Speaker 6: knew from Michael Malone, what things that Roy did especially
- 21:57Speaker 6: well that translated to the college students at the time.
- 22:01Speaker 6: Can Michael sort of try to replicate or do you
- 22:03Speaker 6: think he has in his coaching bag if you will, well.
- 22:06Speaker 11: I mean you talk about I mean, he's a genius
- 22:09Speaker 11: when it comes to x's and o's, right, like you
- 22:13Speaker 11: talk about those Denver Nuggets teams that he coached. Obviously
- 22:16Speaker 11: he got lucky having a guy like Jokic and then
- 22:19Speaker 11: a guy like Jamal Murray kind of being the two
- 22:21Speaker 11: guys at the top. But that also goes back to
- 22:24Speaker 11: coaching as well. He was there from the beginning with
- 22:26Speaker 11: those guys, right, He put things around around them, a
- 22:30Speaker 11: system and things like that.
- 22:32Speaker 5: Finding how good Yolkic is, right, that's a huge part of.
- 22:35Speaker 3: It, exactly.
- 22:36Speaker 11: And nowadays if you talk about talent scouting or being
- 22:39Speaker 11: able to find good talent and the transfer portal and
- 22:43Speaker 11: things like that, you've got to have an eye for
- 22:45Speaker 11: that right. You don't have guys that are just staying
- 22:48Speaker 11: three four years like coach Williams was obviously blessed to
- 22:51Speaker 11: have and guy stayed because it was coach Williams in
- 22:53Speaker 11: North Carolina. But you don't have that necessarily now and
- 22:56Speaker 11: so you got to be able to in a you know,
- 22:58Speaker 11: a few weeks really nowadays, you got to be able
- 23:01Speaker 11: to say, Okay, you know what, that fits what I'm
- 23:03Speaker 11: trying to do. This fits what I'm trying to do.
- 23:05Speaker 11: And I think Mike Malone did that great with Denver
- 23:08Speaker 11: and it's funny. You know, people have talked about how
- 23:10Speaker 11: he's like an old school coach, right, and how he
- 23:13Speaker 11: holds everybody accountable. That was one of the things that
- 23:15Speaker 11: coach Williams always did right. It didn't matter if it
- 23:18Speaker 11: was me the acc player of the Year my junior year,
- 23:21Speaker 11: or if it was a walk on in practice right
- 23:23Speaker 11: that didn't do something correct. He was going to hold
- 23:26Speaker 11: whoever it was accountable because it was a bigger goal.
- 23:29Speaker 3: I think that's something.
- 23:30Speaker 11: That obviously, you know, you got to kind of taper
- 23:32Speaker 11: back a little bit. You're not dealing with grow men,
- 23:33Speaker 11: You're dealing with kids and people trying to figure it out.
- 23:37Speaker 11: But I think that's something that can translate well to
- 23:39Speaker 11: to you know, kind of coming into this program of hey,
- 23:41Speaker 11: we've got a certain standard and a system that we're
- 23:43Speaker 11: running and there's no letdowns from that, and that kind
- 23:46Speaker 11: of falls into the Carolina way or the family that
- 23:49Speaker 11: you want to talk about.
- 23:51Speaker 9: Justin you mentioned how he's trying to find people that
- 23:54Speaker 9: fit what he wants to do. How much of it
- 23:56Speaker 9: is bringing in the right people to do what you
- 23:59Speaker 9: want to do versus adapting what you do to what
- 24:02Speaker 9: you have.
- 24:03Speaker 11: I think it's a good mix, honestly, and that's kind
- 24:05Speaker 11: of why I think when you look at the people
- 24:07Speaker 11: that he's going to bring it around him, I think
- 24:09Speaker 11: it's important to have people that have been around the
- 24:11Speaker 11: college space for a while right have seen the differences
- 24:15Speaker 11: and the changes and the transitions that we've seen through
- 24:18Speaker 11: college basketball.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Well.
- 24:19Speaker 11: Also, I wouldn't mind seeing an NBA guy come in
- 24:22Speaker 11: as far as player development or things like that. I
- 24:24Speaker 11: think that's really key as well. And so I think,
- 24:27Speaker 11: you know, when you talk about him as a coach,
- 24:29Speaker 11: it's going to be just as important the staff and
- 24:32Speaker 11: the people that come in around him. And it also
- 24:34Speaker 11: goes as far as you know, who are we bringing
- 24:36Speaker 11: in from the transfer portal, right like now with the
- 24:40Speaker 11: freshman and transfer portal, what fits what he's looking for,
- 24:43Speaker 11: but also what maybe we still have there when he
- 24:46Speaker 11: comes in or things like that. So it's I think
- 24:49Speaker 11: that's going to be the big thing to see, is
- 24:50Speaker 11: that transition for him, but also the help that he
- 24:53Speaker 11: has with him through that transition.
- 24:55Speaker 7: Justin any Carolina fans that are skeptical about the hire,
- 24:58Speaker 7: how much of that skeptic do you think comes from
- 25:01Speaker 7: what they just saw with Bill Belichick in football?
- 25:04Speaker 4: All of it.
- 25:06Speaker 11: I was waiting for Bill Belichick question. I mean the
- 25:13Speaker 11: tough part about where college sports is in general, right
- 25:17Speaker 11: is you have to have the money.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Period like that. That's just the way it is. And
- 25:22Speaker 3: I don't know. Once again, I'm not in any decision
- 25:24Speaker 3: making rooms. I'm not any really.
- 25:26Speaker 11: Any any conversations when it comes to decision making for
- 25:30Speaker 11: any athletics at North Carolina.
- 25:33Speaker 3: But if you don't have the money, and you.
- 25:35Speaker 11: Don't have the money to pay players, then you could
- 25:37Speaker 11: have a Bill Belichick in the seat and it just
- 25:40Speaker 11: might not translate, right, And so I think that's another
- 25:43Speaker 11: aspect of not only the staff that you know, Mike
- 25:45Speaker 11: Malone brings in, but also making sure that we have
- 25:49Speaker 11: the money to be able to divvy out to these
- 25:51Speaker 11: players that maybe they're wanting to go after to now
- 25:54Speaker 11: bring in the talent. Now, the coaching takes over once
- 25:56Speaker 11: you have the talent sitting in the locker room. And
- 26:00Speaker 11: so I think that's a big part. I mean, somebody
- 26:03Speaker 11: asked me, I think it was this morning. Actually they
- 26:06Speaker 11: asked me about kind of the whole brand conversation, right,
- 26:09Speaker 11: and when you talk about the brand of these different teams,
- 26:13Speaker 11: North Carolina, Duke Kansas, everybody's taking a hit, right, The
- 26:17Speaker 11: brands aren't the same anymore, because the number one conversation
- 26:21Speaker 11: that you're having is the money aspect. How much can
- 26:24Speaker 11: I get? You know, like where can I sign on
- 26:27Speaker 11: the dot line for this? And then we'll talk about okay,
- 26:30Speaker 11: you know what. I like that interlocking and see right
- 26:32Speaker 11: like that's that's just the reality of college sports now.
- 26:35Speaker 11: And so I think if we have that in place
- 26:37Speaker 11: and we have good people around coach Malone. I think
- 26:42Speaker 11: his ability to coach and his ability to hold people
- 26:45Speaker 11: accountable and have a certain standard, I think we could
- 26:48Speaker 11: I think we could be right back to where we
- 26:49Speaker 11: need to be.
- 26:50Speaker 6: It would have thought Bill Belichick would have staying on
- 26:52Speaker 6: the university.
- 26:54Speaker 5: Rewind like a year and a half. He'd be like, Wow, Billalich, Yes,
- 26:56Speaker 5: now it's just like Noll Belichick.
- 26:58Speaker 1: So justin if I told you you could hand pick
- 27:00Speaker 1: any coach you wanted to be the next head coach
- 27:03Speaker 1: at North Carolina, anyone, and it's your decision and yours alone,
- 27:06Speaker 1: who you're going with, who's doing it better than everyone else?
- 27:09Speaker 4: Right now?
- 27:12Speaker 8: Oh?
- 27:12Speaker 11: Man, See, that's a tough that's a tough question because
- 27:15Speaker 11: now that I'm in the media space.
- 27:17Speaker 3: I have to try to be as unbiased as possible.
- 27:20Speaker 5: It depends on it.
- 27:23Speaker 3: The guy, the guy down.
- 27:24Speaker 11: The road at Duke is doing an unbelievable job, right
- 27:28Speaker 11: I would never say, hey, we need to go, we
- 27:30Speaker 11: need to go grab him.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Be careful their soul though.
- 27:35Speaker 3: It's a dangerous it's a dangerous game.
- 27:37Speaker 11: Is But but when I like when when the conversations
- 27:41Speaker 11: were happening with coaches, A guy that I loved is TJ.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Alsoberg at Iowa State, Like, I love what he does there.
- 27:49Speaker 11: Obviously you talk about Dusty Mayheck, he just won I
- 27:51Speaker 11: see the Michigan hat. He just won a national championship, right,
- 27:54Speaker 11: He's a really really good coach. Tommy Lloyd, I love
- 27:57Speaker 11: Tommy Lloyd. So there was good option and all the
- 28:00Speaker 11: names that were thrown around. And I also see from
- 28:05Speaker 11: their perspective of hey, I'm getting paid, I'm having the
- 28:09Speaker 11: nil come in where I'm at. I can build a
- 28:11Speaker 11: program up exactly how I want it to be, and
- 28:14Speaker 11: I'm not having to come in kind of with the
- 28:16Speaker 11: circumstances that North Carolina has been in. So I can
- 28:20Speaker 11: see it from both sides. But those coaches, I mean,
- 28:22Speaker 11: I don't think you could have went wrong with any
- 28:24Speaker 11: of them. And I think, you know, the Mike Malone higher,
- 28:26Speaker 11: I don't think it's a panic or a settle by
- 28:29Speaker 11: any means. So I think it's it's exciting to have
- 28:32Speaker 11: him in.
- 28:33Speaker 3: But those are some of the coaches I liked.
- 28:34Speaker 4: Has Michigan entered the all time best team conversation?
- 28:39Speaker 11: Who team construction? I think it has to be in
- 28:45Speaker 11: the conversation. I will say that, wow, no big. I
- 28:48Speaker 11: mean the tough thing about the game against Yukon, Michigan
- 28:51Speaker 11: really didn't even play well and they still won a
- 28:54Speaker 11: national championship. Right, And so I think that you know,
- 28:58Speaker 11: when you talk about it, For me, the best team
- 29:00Speaker 11: TA ever assembled is and in my mind is that
- 29:02Speaker 11: Kentucky team that we played against, that Platoon team. They
- 29:04Speaker 11: didn't even win a national championship, but that team was
- 29:07Speaker 11: loaded from one to ten. But I mean, you have
- 29:11Speaker 11: to you look at some of these I mean they
- 29:14Speaker 11: went on a streak where they beat teamed by forty,
- 29:16Speaker 11: like five or six games in a row and things
- 29:19Speaker 11: like that, So I mean they got to be I
- 29:20Speaker 11: guess you got to put them in a conversation, but man,
- 29:23Speaker 11: they were a gauntlet. I loved Arizona, and what they
- 29:28Speaker 11: did to Arizona I think kind of solidified that they
- 29:33Speaker 11: were the best team in college basketball at that point.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Stu.
- 29:36Speaker 7: What you might not be aware of is that me
- 29:38Speaker 7: and Justin used to play video games together and I
- 29:41Speaker 7: would use Justin as a sounding board for some of
- 29:44Speaker 7: my takes. So, Justin, I have an unpopular opinion when
- 29:49Speaker 7: it comes to March Madness that I want to run
- 29:51Speaker 7: by you. One shining moment is the most overrated tradition
- 29:56Speaker 7: in all of sports blasphemy.
- 29:58Speaker 11: I mean, it's probably the most overrated thing for the
- 30:04Speaker 11: teams that don't win it. I will say that for
- 30:07Speaker 11: the teams, the teams that don't win it, I don't
- 30:10Speaker 11: want to hear.
- 30:10Speaker 3: None of that.
- 30:11Speaker 11: The year that we lost in the championship, turn it off, please.
- 30:13Speaker 4: There were no shining moments for you, right, I'm with you.
- 30:16Speaker 11: Yeah, But the team that won it, it is something
- 30:18Speaker 11: that you've always seen and you know, you kind of
- 30:21Speaker 11: fall into that aspect and it's pretty special once they
- 30:24Speaker 11: show you at the end of it. But I mean,
- 30:27Speaker 11: it's not a bad It's not a bad take when
- 30:29Speaker 11: it comes to the teams that you know, when it
- 30:31Speaker 11: comes to Yukon walking off the floor, that's not a
- 30:34Speaker 11: terrible take.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Can I go back real quick? What was that best
- 30:36Speaker 5: team ever that you said? Which Kentucky team?
- 30:40Speaker 3: What was that?
- 30:41Speaker 11: I think that was my freshman year twenty fourteen, twenty fifteen.
- 30:43Speaker 11: I think they lost to Wisconsin. Yeah, Booker played tea deep,
- 30:49Speaker 11: Book played like fifteen minutes.
- 30:53Speaker 3: I mean they had guys everywhere.
- 30:54Speaker 11: They had the Harrison Twins, they had Cat, they had
- 30:56Speaker 11: Willy kley Stein, they had everybody.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Yeah, you're in the media game now, like you got
- 31:01Speaker 1: you understand what they're doing with one shining moment.
- 31:04Speaker 4: Right, it's just to keep you around till midnight. You
- 31:06Speaker 4: get it, right, I mean it's.
- 31:08Speaker 11: You gotta keep you gotta keep people locked in as
- 31:10Speaker 11: as best as you can. So I definitely understand from
- 31:13Speaker 11: that perspective too.
- 31:14Speaker 1: But there are no shotting moments. Only one team as
- 31:16Speaker 1: a shining moment, is what you're saying.
- 31:19Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean even the teams maybe that like had
- 31:21Speaker 11: crazy buzzer beaters or crazy moments in the tournament that
- 31:24Speaker 11: are at home watching it like doesn't have It's not
- 31:27Speaker 11: the same. It's not the same feeling as you being
- 31:30Speaker 11: up there on the stage watching it.
- 31:31Speaker 5: Like.
- 31:31Speaker 3: It's just not you know, it doesn't connect the same.
- 31:34Speaker 4: You play tailor and video games? Who wins more you? Taylor?
- 31:38Speaker 11: You know what's crazy. We talked about it. I've got
- 31:40Speaker 11: two kids now and me and Vip have not played.
- 31:44Speaker 11: I mean it's been a it's been a minute at
- 31:46Speaker 11: this point, Like this was during.
- 31:47Speaker 4: My kids will do that so lot.
- 31:48Speaker 11: Yeah, my playing career when I would have you know,
- 31:51Speaker 11: road trips and stuff like that, and I was free,
- 31:55Speaker 11: but Zip it depended on what game. Majority of the time,
- 31:58Speaker 11: video games was kind of my my spot.
- 32:00Speaker 7: He's being very humble, right, now, I'm certain he is.
- 32:03Speaker 7: He's being very humble right now. Whenever we would play
- 32:06Speaker 7: a shooter video game, he would have to carry me
- 32:08Speaker 7: and I was just his backpack.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Gladly.
- 32:12Speaker 11: He was a great He was a guy you know,
- 32:13Speaker 11: you need guy got your back.
- 32:16Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying. I just have the visuals.
- 32:18Speaker 11: They might not ever do anything really, but they're at
- 32:20Speaker 11: least gonna have great call outs and.
- 32:21Speaker 3: They're gonna have great communication that everywhere.
- 32:24Speaker 6: Most of the pros have a hand eye coordination that
- 32:26Speaker 6: the rest of us don't know about.
- 32:28Speaker 5: So it helps with video games too.
- 32:31Speaker 4: Does he still wear you at with sports takes or what?
- 32:34Speaker 2: Uh?
- 32:34Speaker 4: You know?
- 32:35Speaker 11: He there for a while, he would, he would come
- 32:37Speaker 11: in pretty hot with him.
- 32:39Speaker 3: He hasn't.
- 32:39Speaker 11: He hasn't come with anything really here lately. I'm sure
- 32:42Speaker 11: now that you're saying that, I'm sure I'll start getting
- 32:44Speaker 11: you know, I'm sorry, I mean, and I'm.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Always down for him because I love a little back
- 32:53Speaker 3: and forth.
- 32:53Speaker 1: So all right, justin we appreciate the time. I'd like
- 32:56Speaker 1: to do this more often if possible. So Taylor is

- 33:35Speaker 1: We only have a couple of minutes here. It is Tuesday,
- 33:38Speaker 1: so of course we're going to do a think about
- 33:40Speaker 1: It Thursday.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Why not?
- 33:42Speaker 1: I think we're off Thursday, and so that's why we're
- 33:44Speaker 1: doing it today.
- 33:45Speaker 4: Yes, well, I mean I am so Taylor wants to
- 33:47Speaker 4: do it today. So we need the image of guys.
- 33:51Speaker 12: You know that segment talk about It Tuesday on Hawkman
- 33:54Speaker 12: Crowder in Soleiro. This is like that, but bigger, big
- 33:59Speaker 12: and better, and forty eight hours later, they seems think
- 34:04Speaker 12: about it Thursday on a Tuesday.
- 34:08Speaker 7: Welcome in. You think about it Thursday on a Tuesday. Yes,
- 34:13Speaker 7: so Stu gotts. The Islanders fired Patrick Waugh yep as
- 34:18Speaker 7: their head coach. They replaced him with Peter de Boor.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:23Speaker 7: And when you hear the name Debor, you think kayland
- 34:26Speaker 7: Boor at Alabama yep. So the think about it Thursday
- 34:30Speaker 7: is who would do better coaching the other person's sport?
- 34:34Speaker 7: Peter DeBoer coaching Alabama football, right, or Kaylan de Boor
- 34:38Speaker 7: now coaching the Islanders.
- 34:39Speaker 1: I'll put it on the poll first. When you think
- 34:41Speaker 1: Peter de Boor, do you, of course think of Kaylan
- 34:43Speaker 1: de Boor. No, So you're asking, would Kaylin de Boor
- 34:51Speaker 1: be a better hockey coach than Peter Debor would be
- 34:54Speaker 1: a college football coach?
- 34:55Speaker 7: Yep?
- 34:57Speaker 4: Wow, I'm thinking.
- 35:00Speaker 5: I'm trying to get all my Peter de Boor knowledge.
- 35:03Speaker 1: Yes, now, let's not really taking that lot and I
- 35:05Speaker 1: usually save all my thinking for Thursday.
- 35:08Speaker 4: This is this is a difficult one. It's Tuesday.
- 35:11Speaker 5: I'm only thinking half as hard on Thursday. Yes, so
- 35:13Speaker 5: you know, oh no, we're off. Never mind.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Well, I.
- 35:18Speaker 7: This feels like a very clear answer here where Kaylin
- 35:22Speaker 7: de Borr is struggling with the Alabama expectations. You give
- 35:27Speaker 7: him a different sport. I'm worried about him crumbling. Yeah,
- 35:30Speaker 7: I think a hockey guy translates to coaching football.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Yeah, but a lower bar if he were coaching the Islanders,
- 35:36Speaker 1: not nearly as much pressure.
- 35:38Speaker 4: He's not. You know, he's not replacing Nick Saban.
- 35:40Speaker 7: This is it.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Listen, You're not replacing al Arbor who in the eighties
- 35:44Speaker 1: won four straight Stanley Cups with the Islanders, went to
- 35:46Speaker 1: a fifth, lost to Edmonton, and then Gretzky went on
- 35:49Speaker 1: a run. Okay, he's replacing nobody. I mean, I think
- 35:52Speaker 1: Kaylin de Boor would be a great hockey coach.
- 35:55Speaker 9: I say this having lived in the New York market
- 35:59Speaker 9: for pretty much my whole life. There is nothing like
- 36:02Speaker 9: that Alabama job when it comes to pressure to win.
- 36:06Speaker 3: I would if I'm Kaylin Duboor. I'm trying to make
- 36:09Speaker 3: this happen.
- 36:10Speaker 4: Yeah, yes, right, As opposed to being the eye on
- 36:12Speaker 4: their coach. No one cares. I mean geez, yeah, no
- 36:15Speaker 4: we cares, right. I mean, you know whatever, Mike and
- 36:17Speaker 4: Garden City Billion Ocean Side, you know, Jimmy and Long Beach.
- 36:21Speaker 4: They're the only people that care if the Islanders are good.
- 36:24Speaker 13: You know.
- 36:24Speaker 5: So, has Taylor d Boor actually won anything?
- 36:29Speaker 4: No?
- 36:29Speaker 6: No, I mean Peter de Boor has gotten closed and
- 36:33Speaker 6: never actually won anything either. But I think Kaylen's been
- 36:36Speaker 6: further away from real winning than Peter.
- 36:38Speaker 10: Has he lost to the championship to Michigan.
- 36:41Speaker 6: Outside of that, because he's got a lot of Coach
- 36:45Speaker 6: of the Years in his resume, but not a lot
- 36:48Speaker 6: of championships.
- 36:49Speaker 4: Has he ever won anything? He was sixteen minutes away
- 36:53Speaker 4: from winning the whole damn thing.
- 36:56Speaker 6: So the answer is no, because he didn't win that.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Godson Company
- 37:05Speaker 2: live weekdays at three pm Eastern twelve pm Pacific.
- 37:09Speaker 1: So we crowned a national champion last night. Michigan wins
- 37:13Speaker 1: the national championship.
- 37:14Speaker 5: And actually get a crown, do they?
- 37:16Speaker 4: No?
- 37:17Speaker 1: But we crowned one, which means I could shift my
- 37:21Speaker 1: focus over to Augusta. I'm very excited because this gets
- 37:24Speaker 1: underway tomorrow. Bomani Jones will join us at about fifteen minutes.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Thank you, iyoha, Sam. We needed that, we needed another one.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Thank you appreciate it. Is he when you think of
- 37:41Speaker 1: some of the great storytellers of all time in sports media,
- 37:46Speaker 1: who is second place to me?
- 37:49Speaker 10: You got that one, well done, well done.
- 37:53Speaker 5: I was gonna say your Finney story, It's just it
- 37:55Speaker 5: sticks in my head for life. I would say.
- 38:00Speaker 6: The person that is used more like a verb or
- 38:03Speaker 6: and adjective is Tom Ernaldi. Yes, good guess, because yeah,
- 38:08Speaker 6: I was always wanting to be the next Tom Ronaldi,
- 38:10Speaker 6: or if I'm going to Tom Ronaldi.
- 38:12Speaker 5: This thing by making people cry, that type of thing.
- 38:14Speaker 1: This is the best week on the sports calendar for me.
- 38:17Speaker 1: And I don't feel like is he is into it.
- 38:19Speaker 1: I'm not certain Tailor's into it because he's still focused
- 38:22Speaker 1: on Carolina and who's going to get the coaching job,
- 38:24Speaker 1: even though they gave the coaching job to Mike Maloney already,
- 38:29Speaker 1: Mike Malone. He is praying that that gets reversed somehow.
- 38:33Speaker 1: It seems like I'm on board with it, are you really?
- 38:36Speaker 1: I'm trying to book Tyler Hansbrough right now, psychot.
- 38:39Speaker 4: How that, by the way, it is college basketball player
- 38:42Speaker 4: of all time.
- 38:43Speaker 5: Don't correct yourself anymore when you say Maloney, I know.
- 38:45Speaker 1: That, right, I know, I know so Tom Ronaldi, mikey
- 38:48Speaker 1: I want to play a game, and Dan Byer, if
- 38:50Speaker 1: you're close to a microphone, please come over.
- 38:52Speaker 4: I think you will like this, Okay, mikey A.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Tom Ronaldi was on Stegatson Company couple of years ago,
- 39:00Speaker 1: right before the Masters, and we had a great discussion
- 39:04Speaker 1: with him about the course, about the tournament, what that
- 39:06Speaker 1: place means to so many you know, kinds of people.
- 39:09Speaker 1: And I am wondering here there are only three options. Tears, goosebumps,
- 39:15Speaker 1: or I don't give a bleep. Okay, So I'm going
- 39:19Speaker 1: to play the sound it's like six minutes long because
- 39:23Speaker 1: Tom Ronaldi, like myself, is a great storyteller, and he
- 39:27Speaker 1: takes a minute to tell this story, but it is
- 39:29Speaker 1: worth it. And so I am asking you, Taylor, tears, goosebumps,
- 39:34Speaker 1: or I don't give a bleep. I don't want Taylor's answer.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I want mikey A's prediction.
- 39:39Speaker 9: Taylor, I had a hard time placing him. I'm going
- 39:43Speaker 9: to give him I don't give a bleep.
- 39:44Speaker 4: Okay? How about is he goosebumps?
- 39:48Speaker 7: Definite goosebumps?
- 39:49Speaker 4: All right?
- 39:50Speaker 1: How just because he likes storytelling, right, good storytelling, He's going.
- 39:54Speaker 9: To appreciate that the big j of the journalism of
- 39:58Speaker 9: it all.
- 39:58Speaker 4: Okay, born out Ricardo, what do you think?
- 40:02Speaker 9: Uh he doesn't mention baseball, I'm gonna say, doesn't.
- 40:08Speaker 4: How about Iowa Sam?
- 40:10Speaker 9: Iowa Sam is gonna be uh not goosebumps?
- 40:14Speaker 4: Okay, not listening right, doesn't care? Ep Jason is he here?
- 40:19Speaker 7: He's not here?
- 40:20Speaker 4: Okay, so we don't care about him today? And how
- 40:23Speaker 4: about Dan Bayern? Because I hand Buyer's full on tears weeping, yes,
- 40:27Speaker 4: fully weeping.
- 40:31Speaker 1: It's a special place, it's a special week, it's a
- 40:33Speaker 1: special tournament. And here's just one example of why. This
- 40:37Speaker 1: is me with Tom Ronaldi a couple of years ago.
- 40:40Speaker 10: But a weird game for ten million dollars.
- 40:42Speaker 6: Okay, Tom, this is such an odd game, but I
- 40:45Speaker 6: have to ask it.
- 40:46Speaker 10: It's you, it's Scott van Pelt, and of course it's
- 40:49Speaker 10: Jim Nance.
- 40:49Speaker 3: Okay.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Ten million dollars goes to the person with the coolest
- 40:54Speaker 1: story involving Augusta.
- 40:56Speaker 10: Tom Ronaldi is pulling out what story?
- 40:59Speaker 8: So? I had a chance to play Augusta National a
- 41:03Speaker 8: few times, but the last time I played, I was
- 41:08Speaker 8: invited by a member. He had invited me and two others.
- 41:14Speaker 8: We had the date. We were going to come in,
- 41:17Speaker 8: stay at the cabin overnight. We were going to play
- 41:20Speaker 8: the afternoon before, have dinner, get up the next morning,
- 41:24Speaker 8: play again, and leave. The member is just a wonderful,
- 41:28Speaker 8: wonderful guy. And a week before Stude, the member calls
- 41:35Speaker 8: me and says, one of the other members of the
- 41:39Speaker 8: foursome can't make it. You can bring anyone you want.
- 41:45Speaker 5: Wow.
- 41:47Speaker 8: So I call my brother and he could not get
- 41:53Speaker 8: out of a work obligation. My brother works for the
- 41:56Speaker 8: Federal Reserve and he had this he had to go
- 41:59Speaker 8: to Washington and he could not get out of it.
- 42:02Speaker 5: He should.
- 42:08Speaker 8: The person I called Stu is a great friend of mine, Kevin,
- 42:13Speaker 8: who I've known for more than twenty five years at
- 42:16Speaker 8: that point, without getting into all the details, he he'd
- 42:24Speaker 8: suffered a terrible, terrible loss, he'd lost an infant child,
- 42:30Speaker 8: and he loves golf, he loves the Masters. And I
- 42:36Speaker 8: called the member and I said to the member, this
- 42:40Speaker 8: is the person that I'm that I'm I'd like to invite,
- 42:44Speaker 8: but I want you to know why, because he's been
- 42:47Speaker 8: through the most difficult thing any person can go through,
- 42:53Speaker 8: and he's found a way to continue to keep his
- 42:56Speaker 8: family together, to be a great father to his other children,
- 43:01Speaker 8: to be a great husband. He's shown so much heart
- 43:07Speaker 8: through so much pain. And we're playing and there's a
- 43:13Speaker 8: moment to where Kevin is out walking in front of
- 43:19Speaker 8: myself and the member on eleven and he's just sort
- 43:26Speaker 8: of strolling and looking around. He's distanced from the caddy.
- 43:30Speaker 8: He's just walking down eleven fair Way by himself. And
- 43:36Speaker 8: the member who I guarantee has taken dozens and dozens
- 43:42Speaker 8: and dozens of people in to the gates down Magnolia
- 43:48Speaker 8: Lane to stay in a cabin, to share this magical
- 43:51Speaker 8: place and experience. You would think he had never done
- 43:55Speaker 8: it before. And he stopped me and he put his
- 43:58Speaker 8: hand on my shoulder and he gestured toward my friend
- 44:03Speaker 8: out fifty sixty yards in front of us, and he
- 44:06Speaker 8: said quietly, that's augusta God. And I choked up, like
- 44:18Speaker 8: I can't even tell you about what that meant to me.
- 44:25Speaker 8: That the member who's such a wonderful, wonderful guy, had
- 44:30Speaker 8: the generosity of heart and spirit, had the perspectives to
- 44:35Speaker 8: he's been a member there for a long time. Again,
- 44:37Speaker 8: he shared this experience with so many people, but the
- 44:40Speaker 8: fact that he gave me this additional opportunity. This was
- 44:44Speaker 8: the person I chose, and it meant that much to him,
- 44:50Speaker 8: not to me, to him that he would stop me
- 44:53Speaker 8: and say, look at that, look at what he's feeling,
- 44:57Speaker 8: look at how he's appreciating it, whatever he's thinking through
- 45:01Speaker 8: remembering feeling. That's Augusta, that's why you come here, And
- 45:09Speaker 8: to me, to the day I die, I will never
- 45:14Speaker 8: ever forget that moment with that member and my friend
- 45:20Speaker 8: out in.
- 45:20Speaker 10: Front of us and the member.
- 45:22Speaker 4: I'm certain Tom is saying, hey, just leave him alone,
- 45:25Speaker 4: let him enjoy the moment, let him take it all in, right,
- 45:27Speaker 4: That's what he was there, just peace.
- 45:29Speaker 8: He just said, I want you to just hang back
- 45:31Speaker 8: for a minute. Just look at him, look at him,
- 45:38Speaker 8: what he's what he's experiencing right now. That's the gift
- 45:43Speaker 8: to this place, right. And you know, did my friend
- 45:47Speaker 8: play particularly well? No? Did it matter to the member zero.
- 45:53Speaker 8: The only thing that mattered to that member was that
- 45:59Speaker 8: this man had gone through terrible loss and this day,
- 46:07Speaker 8: this drive down Magnolia Lane, staying in the cabin, having dinner,
- 46:14Speaker 8: getting up the next morning, all of it. He knew
- 46:19Speaker 8: we are going to give this man a gift of
- 46:25Speaker 8: a day. He deserves it. I don't even know him.
- 46:29Speaker 8: He's a friend of yours, you're a friend of mine,
- 46:32Speaker 8: and this place is in some small way for this
- 46:36Speaker 8: period of time. Dude, going to let him heal, going
- 46:41Speaker 8: to let his heart heal. And I'll tell you my
- 46:48Speaker 8: friend talks to me about that thirty hours, right, multiple
- 46:58Speaker 8: times a year, multuple times a year. Love it, I
- 47:02Speaker 8: have Ay, that's my story about Augusta.
- 47:05Speaker 10: You won the ten million dollars the second you opened
- 47:07Speaker 10: your mouth, right, the second and the second.
- 47:09Speaker 4: You open your mouth, you won the ten million dollars.
- 47:12Speaker 4: A gay, all right, Taylor, So let's get your real
- 47:16Speaker 4: answer here. Tears because I was crying. Wait wait, wait, wait,
- 47:21Speaker 4: and I was there for it. Is crying.
- 47:22Speaker 6: Laughing also an option, not because I'm insensitive, but I'll
- 47:26Speaker 6: explain later.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Okay, Yes, I don't care how you cry. I mean,
- 47:30Speaker 1: you can cry because you're laughing at me. You can
- 47:32Speaker 1: cry because it was an emotional story told by one
- 47:35Speaker 1: of the great storytellers second place to me in the
- 47:37Speaker 1: history of sports media.
- 47:38Speaker 10: Dude could spin a yard.
- 47:40Speaker 4: I mean, he's so good it's unbelievable. Oh, my god,
- 47:43Speaker 4: is he good?
- 47:44Speaker 1: H Taylor tears, goosebumps or I don't give up bleep?
- 47:48Speaker 7: So I was on the fence until we got this.
- 47:52Speaker 13: Augusta one more time, ricardoff, that's Augusta.
- 47:57Speaker 4: Yeah the pause, Yeah, let me hear it one more
- 47:59Speaker 4: time so I can.
- 48:00Speaker 13: That's Agusta.
- 48:03Speaker 4: Okay.
- 48:03Speaker 7: And I know what you're trying to do, sir. You're
- 48:05Speaker 7: trying to pigeonhole me to say something bad about Tom
- 48:07Speaker 7: or Nole. I dare you you want me to say
- 48:09Speaker 7: that he only has one note and he's gonna tell
- 48:11Speaker 7: that same exact story. Yeah, forty different ways.
- 48:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:14Speaker 7: I would never I would never even consider it. That
- 48:16Speaker 7: thought never even crossed my mind.
- 48:18Speaker 1: All right, So goosebumps, Yeah, goosebumps, bumps. Hold on a second,
- 48:23Speaker 1: let's go to board out, Ricardo. I have a feeling
- 48:26Speaker 1: he didn't give a bleep.
- 48:27Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm watching.
- 48:33Speaker 3: I got you pegged.
- 48:35Speaker 1: Let's go to uh Iowa, Sam, I'm pretty certain he's
- 48:38Speaker 1: also watching Paralta.
- 48:40Speaker 4: Go ahead, Iowa, Sam. Well, I'm looking at my arms.
- 48:42Speaker 5: I see a few small little I guess they'd be goosebumps.
- 48:45Speaker 4: So that's Agusta, baby, goosebumps that's a gust all right.
- 48:48Speaker 4: That means you're alive.
- 48:49Speaker 13: I'm alive. That's for the people in the back.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Yes, I'm gonna go to Dan. Last year, Israel Gutierrez
- 48:57Speaker 1: was laughing. He was snorting during it. He was disrespecting,
- 49:00Speaker 1: and he's a storyteller.
- 49:02Speaker 4: I mean, all right.
- 49:03Speaker 6: So my first reaction, literally when I heard Ronaldi's voice,
- 49:08Speaker 6: immediate goosebumps before the stage. Just like that, they just
- 49:11Speaker 6: appeared on my arms with a sound that said, here's
- 49:14Speaker 6: the goose bumps.
- 49:15Speaker 4: That's that's what happens when you got goosebumps.
- 49:17Speaker 5: Yet and then they immediately just hid under my skin.
- 49:21Speaker 5: I don't know what that means.
- 49:22Speaker 6: Once he said that's Augusta, because it wasn't even a
- 49:28Speaker 6: Ronaldi thing. It was this member. It is a little
- 49:31Speaker 6: full of himself and the course, okay, like the man
- 49:34Speaker 6: lost a child.
- 49:35Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure he would have been emotional, and.
- 49:37Speaker 6: Regardless of the setting, this just happens to be a
- 49:40Speaker 6: very pretty one in which he gets to play golf.
- 49:42Speaker 4: It's the healing powers of Augusta. Are you listening to Tom?
- 49:45Speaker 3: That's like the warners of Lake Minnetonka.
- 49:47Speaker 4: Augusta.
- 49:49Speaker 13: That's Augusta thank you.
- 49:51Speaker 6: And then what brought out the tears was when I
- 49:54Speaker 6: was crying, laughing at your reactions. Crying, Well you should
- 50:00Speaker 6: if you would have just cut out everything else and
- 50:03Speaker 6: just put Stu Gott's's noises in there.
- 50:05Speaker 5: They're the number of things.
- 50:06Speaker 6: You could have been doing, and it's not always listening
- 50:09Speaker 6: to Tom Ronaldy talk about golf.
- 50:11Speaker 4: In Magnolia Lane. So I got ab in. Oh.
- 50:16Speaker 6: My answer is I felt all the things except for
- 50:18Speaker 6: the item Giva believe I did not feel that whatsoever.
- 50:21Speaker 4: But you felt the full range of emotions there, including laughter.
- 50:24Speaker 6: Well done, well worth the six minutes I have, go ahead, Taylor.
- 50:28Speaker 7: Some people might say that the only thing they felt
- 50:31Speaker 7: was that six and a half minutes probably could have
- 50:32Speaker 7: been two and a half minutes, but it could have
- 50:34Speaker 7: been not me, and again not me.
- 50:36Speaker 1: I don't think it. It's a dangerous game. It's Tom Rnaldi, Okay,
- 50:39Speaker 1: He's a legend. I had Dan Buyer crying weeping because
- 50:44Speaker 1: he loves golf, and I think he's the only person
- 50:47Speaker 1: who loves this week the way I love this week.
- 50:49Speaker 4: Who's associated with this show? Dan, what were your emotions
- 50:54Speaker 4: during that.
- 50:55Speaker 5: I was cutting onions.
- 50:57Speaker 14: Yes, yes, because it's it's the the child portion of
- 51:01Speaker 14: it as well, like that that tiede like just that
- 51:04Speaker 14: part gets me. I feel for anybody that had to
- 51:06Speaker 14: go through that. But also, if you love this tournament
- 51:09Speaker 14: as much as Stu and I do, and I think Stu,
- 51:14Speaker 14: I assume you've been there. We haven't had conversations. I've
- 51:16Speaker 14: been fortunate enough to be there a few times myself.
- 51:20Speaker 14: But everyone knows the course. So when you talk about
- 51:23Speaker 14: walking up eleven Fairway, you know exactly where he is
- 51:26Speaker 14: in eleven Fairway is the start of Amen Corner. And
- 51:30Speaker 14: for as much as if you love the Masters, you
- 51:33Speaker 14: can name one, two, all the way through eighteen, but
- 51:37Speaker 14: there is something special about getting to Amen Corner. And
- 51:40Speaker 14: I remember the first time I was ever there. You
- 51:43Speaker 14: walk in on the property, You're like, oh there's one,
- 51:45Speaker 14: You're oh, there's nine, green, eighteen, the whole deal. When
- 51:48Speaker 14: you get to Amen Corner, it is absolutely different. And
- 51:51Speaker 14: I can't imagine what it's like without a soul around
- 51:54Speaker 14: except you know, you and your playing partners. Yeah, just
- 51:58Speaker 14: the magical story and then you add telling the story.
- 52:01Speaker 5: My goodness.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Yeah, when you go there, it sucks your right down
- 52:04Speaker 1: to a man corner. You're forced to just walk down
- 52:06Speaker 1: there to me here, it's real.
- 52:07Speaker 5: Yes, hey man Thompson corner.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Hey, look at you all right, Bomani Jones back to
