- 0:00Speaker 1: I ain't nothing gonna break mass dry.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Ain't nothing gonna slow me down?
- 0:06Speaker 1: Oh no, I got to.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Keep a moving.
- 0:11Speaker 4: Ain't nothing gonna break a moss trying.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Don't don't drink?
- 0:14Speaker 4: That's a fire song. What made you think of that?
- 0:18Speaker 5: Don't don't, don't, don't get doom boom?
- 0:22Speaker 4: The only song I can fucking hear because I'm back
- 0:25Speaker 4: in the city is the ice cream truck song. Because
- 0:27Speaker 4: I'm back and it's ninety five degrees, It's ninety five degrees, right,
- 0:33Speaker 4: and I don't and all I hear all day long
- 0:36Speaker 4: is did didn't? Did d duck that that I went googled.
- 0:44Speaker 4: I don't want to slow the guy's hustle, right, I'm
- 0:47Speaker 4: not trying to funk with it.
- 0:47Speaker 1: He doesn't never destroy someone.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Else's I know, but listen, is.
- 0:51Speaker 5: Making money on your block, man.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Let him make his money. I'm not trying to slow
- 0:56Speaker 4: his role. I'm just trying to say that I did
- 0:58Speaker 4: google how long are you allowed to play ice cream
- 1:01Speaker 4: truck music in Manhattan? And he's allowed three minutes legally,
- 1:07Speaker 4: and then he has to keep moving. He can turn
- 1:10Speaker 4: the song off, but if he's parked, he can't rock
- 1:13Speaker 4: that song for more than three minutes.
- 1:15Speaker 6: Now.
- 1:15Speaker 4: I don't have the heart to tell him, but I
- 1:18Speaker 4: want to, right, you.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Want to go down and be freaking kin po the Weasel.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Listen, if you're listening to this podcast wherever you are
- 1:27Speaker 4: in the world, I want you to imagine there's an
- 1:29Speaker 4: ice cream truck parked outside your house and at full volume,
- 1:32Speaker 4: he's playing Pop Goes the Weasel all fucking day. Goddamn.
- 1:35Speaker 4: At a certain point, you become Nicholson in the Shining
- 1:38Speaker 4: and you're like, I need to break his truck. All right, Joelle,
- 1:43Speaker 4: how is Beyonce? We can talk about that.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I'm so sorry to the audience. My voice sounds horriendous
- 1:49Speaker 2: because I screamed.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Last night.
- 1:53Speaker 2: This was on her fucking birthday. It was the fourth
- 1:57Speaker 2: and it was amazing.
- 1:58Speaker 4: This is ridiculous that you have no voice, because she
- 2:01Speaker 4: screamed so loud.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Every song. Then Diana Ross came out. I thought I
- 2:07Speaker 2: was done after Like before Diana came out, I was
- 2:09Speaker 2: like I could feel it already. I was like, I've
- 2:11Speaker 2: shredded my voice.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Was going to come out.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Oh, there was rumors, but I hadn't read it before.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I was so locked into like helping my cousin get
- 2:19Speaker 2: ready and getting there on time and everything that. I
- 2:21Speaker 2: didn't read anything about it the day of, so when
- 2:23Speaker 2: she came out completely, I lost my fucking mind. Like
- 2:27Speaker 2: Diana Ross, really, oh my god, I had happy birthday.
- 2:33Speaker 2: It was beyond my birthday. So she led the crowd
- 2:35Speaker 2: and singing happy birthday to me?
- 2:36Speaker 4: Was your voice?
- 2:37Speaker 3: No MoU?
- 2:40Speaker 4: How was Diane? How did Diana Ross sound? Does she
- 2:42Speaker 4: sound good?
- 2:43Speaker 1: She always she?
- 2:45Speaker 4: I don't know. You know, some people get older, they
- 2:47Speaker 4: get older.
- 2:49Speaker 2: And whoever was running sound had two flops that night.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Kendrick Lauren came out, mike wasn't on for about sixteen bars,
- 2:57Speaker 2: and Diana Ross's mike wasn't on until about half way
- 3:00Speaker 2: through her introducing herself essentially, where was it when she
- 3:04Speaker 2: got therehanda good? So fine? Which is our football stadium?
- 3:08Speaker 1: For those people who don't were those out there same place?
- 3:10Speaker 1: To switch?
- 3:11Speaker 4: Joel, I saw your outfit. It was very unique. You
- 3:14Speaker 4: looked beautiful.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 3:16Speaker 4: I saw. I was really following your whole Instagram. I
- 3:18Speaker 4: was invested in the whole. Joel goes to Beyonce's storyline.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Did you cry? Oh my god?
- 3:24Speaker 2: Immediately she said so when she first came out first,
- 3:26Speaker 2: the audience was nuts because everyone knew it was her birthday,
- 3:29Speaker 2: and so she got like maybe a four minute state
- 3:32Speaker 2: like just standing ovation for coming out. And so now
- 3:34Speaker 2: she's crying, and then she gives one of the most
- 3:36Speaker 2: beautiful speeches of all time about how she's just grateful
- 3:39Speaker 2: to be here. She thinks every member of every version
- 3:41Speaker 2: of Destiny's Child, her mother, father. It was like so beautiful,
- 3:45Speaker 2: and then she thanked us, and then she proclaimed the
- 3:47Speaker 2: space a safe space, and then she took off into
- 3:50Speaker 2: Flaws and All, which is one of her best ballads.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It was perfect. It was so perfect. All of her
- 3:53Speaker 2: outfits were topped here. We got every major song because
- 3:56Speaker 2: you know, she doesn't perform everything. So he was there,
- 4:00Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, he was there.
- 4:02Speaker 5: I did get on stage and say all I need
- 4:05Speaker 5: in my life sick.
- 4:06Speaker 2: No appearance in either microphone or physically on the stage,
- 4:12Speaker 2: and we know he was an audience.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Well that's kind of whack, though.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Yeah, why didn't he come on stage?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Why didn't they've done tours together. I think she was like, babe,
- 4:22Speaker 2: it's fine if this one is mine.
- 4:25Speaker 1: They got they got hits.
- 4:28Speaker 2: They do have lots of hits.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Did you stay that? You obviously stayed to the end, right,
- 4:32Speaker 4: So you see, Donald and I went to Taylor Swift.
- 4:34Speaker 4: We weren't trying to fuck with leaving with seventy thousand people,
- 4:36Speaker 4: but for the.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Last outfit changed. It was crazy to me. I was
- 4:40Speaker 2: like leaving Beyonce early. What's happening?
- 4:43Speaker 1: We were there?
- 4:43Speaker 5: Did she cut it together? Just tell us what happened, like,
- 4:46Speaker 5: how was it put together? Was it just random? Was
- 4:48Speaker 5: it a playlist?
- 4:50Speaker 2: So she comes out, she's her own opening So k
- 4:52Speaker 2: t Nada technically didn't opening. Usually there's not an opening act,
- 4:55Speaker 2: but he came and spun for like an hour. It
- 4:56Speaker 2: was amazing. I love Kate Tranada. I know it really was.
- 5:00Speaker 2: So then Beyonce is her own opening act. So she
- 5:02Speaker 2: does like some of her top ballads, which are beautiful.
- 5:05Speaker 2: She comes out in like a very standard like gown
- 5:07Speaker 2: and sits on a piano. It's wonderful. Then she leaves
- 5:10Speaker 2: you alone with one of the queerest dance pop, like
- 5:15Speaker 2: almost raver but mostly club music, which was insane because
- 5:19Speaker 2: immediately you could tell who was gay and who wasn't.
- 5:20Speaker 2: The gays were on their feet for like five minutes,
- 5:24Speaker 2: just absolutely dancing in the aisles and like then a
- 5:26Speaker 2: lot of people were like, what's happening? I don't understand.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Then she goes back as she performs the entire album
- 5:32Speaker 2: of Renaissance, the whole thing, front to back, and then
- 5:34Speaker 2: she'll but not never a full song, she'll intermix old classics,
- 5:38Speaker 2: old songs from her past. At one point, she saw
- 5:41Speaker 2: Tia Maori in the crowd and she was like, went
- 5:44Speaker 2: into a verse of Tia song from when she was
- 5:46Speaker 2: in a girl group when she was like ten, which
- 5:47Speaker 2: was crazy. We were like, Beyonce, what are you doing?
- 5:49Speaker 2: Just off the top of the dome, saw in the
- 5:51Speaker 2: crowd and was like, I'm just gonna do a version
- 5:53Speaker 2: of your song for you right now. It's like, what
- 5:55Speaker 2: is happening?
- 5:56Speaker 1: So that was the whole in a band together.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Yes, when she was like twelve, they're very young. Before
- 6:02Speaker 2: they get the TV show, they have two songs, one
- 6:05Speaker 2: of which is kind of a bop. She did the
- 6:07Speaker 2: one that's kind of a bop and it was amazing
- 6:09Speaker 2: because she's plugged in and she cares.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Could you imagine being in that moment.
- 6:15Speaker 7: Beyonce looks at you and sings your song?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Your song. You melt into the floor like amazing, there's
- 6:24Speaker 2: you play it.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So cool that everybody's like what an asshole.
- 6:29Speaker 4: On the other what if the four of us were
- 6:32Speaker 4: in the crowd and she saw us and she like.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 6:38Speaker 4: I know that loves this podcast.
- 6:43Speaker 1: She listens. She talks about it all the time. Podcast.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Yeah, she's an avid listener.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Thank you for listening.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Than someone told me that Governor Whitmer she's the governor
- 6:58Speaker 4: of Michigan. Is that correct? Well, there are politics experts
- 7:02Speaker 4: that she posted a scrubs gift Donald of us.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Sh she was.
- 7:10Speaker 4: It was about some healthcare achievement in her state, and
- 7:13Speaker 4: she posted a gift of you and I fist bumping.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Nice Daniel, you could look that up. I think it
- 7:18Speaker 4: was on.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Negative stuff I found already.
- 7:22Speaker 4: No, she was what is it, Daniel, She was bragging
- 7:25Speaker 4: about something positive that happened, posting the chat.
- 7:27Speaker 7: More Michiganders are going to be able to access the
- 7:29Speaker 7: health care services they need. We're boosting Medicaid reimbursement rates,
- 7:32Speaker 7: investing in our Healthy Mom's Healthy Babies program, and expanding
- 7:35Speaker 7: access to mental health services.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Pounded between you two, that's it's you and me.
- 7:40Speaker 5: That's what I'm talking about, baby, Yeah, that's what I'm
- 7:42Speaker 5: talking about.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't have my sound effects machine, so you're
- 7:47Speaker 4: not going to hear.
- 7:48Speaker 1: That's what I'm talking about. You're going to have to
- 7:50Speaker 1: do what I'm talking about.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you that that that's food. Tang forever, Tang forever. Oh,
- 8:02Speaker 4: for Fox's sake, stop talking about.
- 8:06Speaker 6: You.

- 8:11Speaker 4: We have an exciting guest today. What what wooll tank forever?
- 8:18Speaker 4: We have an exciting guest Elizabeth Banks on the program.
- 8:21Speaker 4: We are bringing the guests, we are booking them one
- 8:25Speaker 4: by one, and we also secured yeah, Dane, I don't
- 8:28Speaker 4: have my gear on.
- 8:29Speaker 7: That out here.
- 8:30Speaker 4: We also secured another exciting guest for Pete Holmes, the
- 8:35Speaker 4: comedian that I love very much, is going to be
- 8:37Speaker 4: coming on the podcast. Donald, Feel free to reach out
- 8:40Speaker 4: to anyone you know and try and get them on
- 8:42Speaker 4: the podcast. You know Alicia Silverstone, You know Alicia? Yeah,
- 8:48Speaker 4: but should more likely say yes to you than me?
- 8:50Speaker 1: Bullshit.
- 8:55Speaker 4: I get shy around Alicia to this day.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Really.
- 8:59Speaker 4: I mean, I'm friendly with her because she did my
- 9:01Speaker 4: short film and I've known her and she's so sweet
- 9:04Speaker 4: to me and I love her, but the the I
- 9:08Speaker 4: had such a crush on her that to this day
- 9:11Speaker 4: when I see her, I get like flustered. I have
- 9:14Speaker 4: to look for my word. I have to look for
- 9:15Speaker 4: my words.
- 9:16Speaker 5: I love that because that doesn't happen often. Man, with you,
- 9:20Speaker 5: you know what I mean?
- 9:20Speaker 4: You are the Aerosmith videos. The Aerosmith videos really made
- 9:24Speaker 4: an impact in my life.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I saw something I saw. I don't know how I
- 9:33Speaker 1: was how it.
- 9:34Speaker 5: I guess one of my kids was watching YouTube or
- 9:36Speaker 5: something like that, and she and the one where she
- 9:39Speaker 5: jumps off.
- 9:39Speaker 4: The bridge the finger, yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 1: To Stephen Dwarf, Yeah, that's a good one. Was that.
- 9:48Speaker 1: I was crying when I met you.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Try if I get you you.
- 9:58Speaker 4: That was that was a fires.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, man, that she was are you kidding me? And
- 10:02Speaker 1: knew what was the other one?
- 10:03Speaker 6: Crazy? Crazy?
- 10:08Speaker 5: You could put those two together. It's like the same song.
- 10:11Speaker 5: It's like you could just.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Like they're probably all written by Diane Warren or something,
- 10:16Speaker 4: but they do sound the same. But they were fucking
- 10:18Speaker 4: fire songs.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And in both videos, Alicia Silverstone.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Is she here? Elizabeth banksdown? She just arrived. All right,
- 10:26Speaker 4: let's let her in. You know, we're gonna talk to
- 10:28Speaker 4: this woman has had an extraordinary career. I mean, she
- 10:33Speaker 4: would have had an extraordinary career if we were just
- 10:36Speaker 4: talking about her acting credits. But now she has become
- 10:41Speaker 4: an enormously successful filmmaker, including with the latest movie Cocaine Bear,
- 10:47Speaker 4: which made a zillion dollars, And we just love her.
- 10:50Speaker 4: She was my baby mama. She's just the nicest person
- 10:53Speaker 4: you ever.
- 10:53Speaker 1: On television on television.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Yeah, oh yeah, thanks. I don't, I don't. I don't
- 10:59Speaker 4: have a baby mama yet in real life. But she
- 11:02Speaker 4: was my imagine. I said that casually, like she was
- 11:05Speaker 4: my baby mama. I haven't seen her in years, actually, Donald,
- 11:12Speaker 4: I just saw at t Swift and that's when I
- 11:15Speaker 4: that's when I had the idea, like, wait a minute.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Now that we're, you know, in this holding pattern where
- 11:21Speaker 4: we can't talk episodes, and we also want to have
- 11:24Speaker 4: interesting people that we know on I got to ask
- 11:28Speaker 4: Liz and she said yes immediately. So I'm so happy
- 11:32Speaker 4: that she's here and we'll ask her about everything in
- 11:36Speaker 4: her life because she's got a very interesting life. All Right, Daniel,
- 11:39Speaker 4: allow her in the room. You want to count in?
- 11:43Speaker 4: Oh yeah, Donald counting. Sure, we made about a bunch
- 11:55Speaker 4: of so ga.
- 12:06Speaker 8: Yea ladies and gentlemen, give it up for a loza with.
- 12:24Speaker 4: She is there, She is America.
- 12:27Speaker 1: There is hundreds of wons.
- 12:29Speaker 6: I love a song and dance over.
- 12:31Speaker 4: You are even more beautiful today than the day we
- 12:34Speaker 4: met you, when you were my baby mama.
- 12:36Speaker 6: That's true. I have more money now.
- 12:40Speaker 4: You do? You really do?
- 12:44Speaker 6: Have you noticed? Oh, women get prettier when they get richer,
- 12:49Speaker 6: is what I've was what I've noticed.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Well, let me write that down because Donald Donald Donald.
- 12:54Speaker 4: But no, because Donald and I are showing our age, Elizabeth,
- 12:57Speaker 4: and you just don't seem to a well Donald donaldly
- 13:00Speaker 4: obviously a lot less than me. Yeah yeah, because Donald
- 13:04Speaker 4: has flawless skin. But you, I'm not just saying this
- 13:07Speaker 4: to butter you up as our guest on the podcast,
- 13:09Speaker 4: but you. We saw you in person in the T
- 13:11Speaker 4: Swift concert and you looked like you hadn't aged a
- 13:13Speaker 4: day since since I saw you on the TV show Scrubs.
- 13:16Speaker 4: And you pretended not to be impregnated by me.
- 13:19Speaker 6: Oh, thank you, praise Yeah, it's I'm doing it naturally.
- 13:26Speaker 6: So far. I don't have a I don't have any
- 13:30Speaker 6: doctors yet. I'll collect I'm collecting names for the future.
- 13:35Speaker 6: I haven't done anything to the to the face or
- 13:39Speaker 6: the body yet. I'm not doing I don't know. We'll
- 13:41Speaker 6: see how I feel in the future. But yeah, I'm
- 13:44Speaker 6: just uh, I'm just I'm just trying to get just
- 13:48Speaker 6: trying to keep going, guys.
- 13:49Speaker 1: You know, just trying to how's the eyesight.
- 13:51Speaker 6: I'm forty nine. It's not good. Look, I mean, I
- 13:54Speaker 6: got the readers on it.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Hello, Yeah, but those are very hip audience. She has
- 13:58Speaker 4: very hip readers on. They're kind of like clear ray bands.
- 14:01Speaker 6: Yeah, there are pink ray bands. Actually the state they're
- 14:04Speaker 6: called catus. I live for them.
- 14:06Speaker 4: There you go. By the way, this is a DJ
- 14:08Speaker 4: Daniel who's our engineer mixer, And that's Juelle Monique. She's
- 14:12Speaker 4: our producers to me too.
- 14:14Speaker 1: She knows this already. She listens to the Have.
- 14:17Speaker 4: You be honest? Have you ever heard the podcast?
- 14:19Speaker 6: I have I listened. I have listened to a couple
- 14:21Speaker 6: of bits. I go on walks with my dog and
- 14:23Speaker 6: I need things to listen to. You too, are pleasant enough.
- 14:26Speaker 4: I think you'd find us. I think you'd really laugh
- 14:29Speaker 4: at us because we talk about things that would make
- 14:32Speaker 4: you giggle.
- 14:34Speaker 6: That's typically true in life with you guys too.
- 14:36Speaker 4: And also if you listen to the ones we did
- 14:38Speaker 4: of that you were on, we said such loving things
- 14:42Speaker 4: about you. We talked about how talented and hilarious you are.
- 14:45Speaker 6: I had so much fun making the show with you guys,
- 14:48Speaker 6: and what an awesome job. It also helped that it
- 14:52Speaker 6: was five minutes from my house where I was living
- 14:54Speaker 6: at the time, in LA and you know, I was
- 14:57Speaker 6: trying to have a baby's back then, so I was
- 14:59Speaker 6: like really focused on staying in LA, staying near, you know,
- 15:04Speaker 6: near my sweet husband, who you guys know, yeah, and
- 15:07Speaker 6: you know, and trying to make our babies. I had
- 15:09Speaker 6: to do a lot of IVF and stuff to make
- 15:11Speaker 6: my kids, which is a well known fact in the world,
- 15:15Speaker 6: maybe not to your listeners, but so I was like, literally,
- 15:19Speaker 6: you know, giving myself shots in our fake hospital set
- 15:23Speaker 6: the whole time we were making that show.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I did not know.
- 15:27Speaker 4: We didn't know that. We didn't know that.
- 15:28Speaker 6: There you go.
- 15:29Speaker 4: So what ended up happening? Did you have I forgot
- 15:33Speaker 4: if you did you have children? I know you have children.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Did you adopted you do IVF? Do?
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yes?
- 15:39Speaker 6: I had to use a gestational surrogate. So my kids
- 15:41Speaker 6: are they're me and my husband. We made baby cakes
- 15:45Speaker 6: and then we baked a baby cake in another lady's oven,
- 15:49Speaker 6: and then and I may and I did that twice.
- 15:51Speaker 6: So I have two kids that are that.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Are so women are firs And sorry for being naive
- 15:56Speaker 4: about this, but I truly don't know women are available
- 15:59Speaker 4: for or for pay to host your baby inside of
- 16:04Speaker 4: them for nine months.
- 16:05Speaker 6: That's right, you rent the womb.
- 16:07Speaker 4: And is there I'm sure there's legal precedent, but is
- 16:10Speaker 4: there concern that the woman will ever be like, sorry,
- 16:13Speaker 4: this is mine now.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 16:16Speaker 6: In fact, when you go first of all, you use agencies.
- 16:18Speaker 6: This is all done above board. You know, in the
- 16:21Speaker 6: state of California.
- 16:22Speaker 4: You don't do it on the black market.
- 16:25Speaker 6: There's no, of course, not no. And you know I
- 16:27Speaker 6: was early, you know, I was one of the people.
- 16:30Speaker 6: I did this twelve years ago, now thirteen years ago,
- 16:34Speaker 6: so it's been a long time since I did it.
- 16:36Speaker 6: It was at the time. It's not legal in every state.
- 16:39Speaker 6: I'm not sure how many states is legal in anymore,
- 16:41Speaker 6: but California had really great laws protecting what's called intended
- 16:45Speaker 6: parents when it comes to all this stuff, you go
- 16:48Speaker 6: through an agency. Everybody's well looked after. It's all legal,
- 16:52Speaker 6: and you know, there's lots of paperwork and they'll tell
- 16:55Speaker 6: you when you go that The number one concern is
- 16:59Speaker 6: not that a surrogate is gonna want your baby. The
- 17:03Speaker 6: number one concern is that the parents aren't gonna take
- 17:06Speaker 6: the baby, like the Surgates, Like well, surgates already have
- 17:10Speaker 6: kids because they have to prove that they can do it.
- 17:13Speaker 6: They they're already moms, you know, like they don't want
- 17:16Speaker 6: your freaking kid.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Wow.
- 17:19Speaker 6: So their biggest concern is like people getting divorced during
- 17:23Speaker 6: the process and then suddenly being like we changed our mind.
- 17:25Speaker 6: It's like then what so the biggest the biggest concern
- 17:28Speaker 6: is is not the way that people think it's going
- 17:31Speaker 6: to be. It's the other way that causes the most problem.
- 17:34Speaker 1: That would suck. Man.
- 17:35Speaker 5: You go through it all and then the people get
- 17:38Speaker 5: divorced and you don't get paid, but now you've got
- 17:40Speaker 5: a baby and everything.
- 17:41Speaker 1: It's like wait, hold on, and it's not man, it's.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Not even your it's not even you just renting your oven. Yeah,
- 17:53Speaker 4: a person to make this movie one day because this
- 17:56Speaker 4: is a great movie.
- 17:58Speaker 6: Well, I don't know, it's if I can share the
- 18:02Speaker 6: journey a little bit. I do find it helps people
- 18:05Speaker 6: who are going through it.
- 18:06Speaker 4: I'm sure there's so many people listening who are in
- 18:09Speaker 4: a similar place and are curious about it. And I
- 18:11Speaker 4: truly know nothing about it. So that's that's really interesting
- 18:15Speaker 4: to me. And and so the woman's hired, she gives
- 18:17Speaker 4: birth to the baby, and then there's not you know,
- 18:21Speaker 4: it's not like it's not like she isn't Then she's gone.
- 18:24Speaker 4: You don't have contact with her anymore, does she is
- 18:26Speaker 4: she ever curious to You can have con.
- 18:28Speaker 6: You can do it. You do whatever you want to do.
- 18:30Speaker 6: You know, you have you make there's not really rules
- 18:33Speaker 6: about that. I think that there's decency and human and
- 18:36Speaker 6: humanity in it, so of course you want to you know,
- 18:38Speaker 6: my kids are being raised Jewish. We had a brisk
- 18:40Speaker 6: they're both boys, so we were lucky that, you know,
- 18:43Speaker 6: eight days after the ceremony, I mean ideas after the birth,
- 18:46Speaker 6: we had a ceremony where we sort of welcome our
- 18:49Speaker 6: children into the world, et cetera. And so their whole
- 18:53Speaker 6: family got to come and sort of like have a
- 18:55Speaker 6: real you know, everybody's family has got to be part
- 18:58Speaker 6: of that, and people do it all different ways, you know,
- 19:01Speaker 6: some people have I had a really beautiful, amazing and
- 19:05Speaker 6: uh full of gratitude experience with my surrogate and with
- 19:09Speaker 6: our surrogate and her husband because he of course is
- 19:12Speaker 6: part of it too, and so that we had a
- 19:14Speaker 6: great experience, you know, and and Kip Kevin touch and
- 19:16Speaker 6: I still send the you know, a photo everyone's while
- 19:19Speaker 6: like it's this tenth birthday, can you believe it? Or
- 19:22Speaker 6: they graduated from middle school? Can you believe it?
- 19:24Speaker 4: So that's so sweet. Yeah, well, that's good to know
- 19:27Speaker 4: that people have that option. They need it.
- 19:29Speaker 6: And yeah, and you can also be like it was horrible.
- 19:32Speaker 6: I didn't this was a trauma for me and goodbye,
- 19:34Speaker 6: like you know, whatever you have to do to keep
- 19:37Speaker 6: it well. I don't know. That wasn't my experience, but
- 19:40Speaker 6: I know that there are women who just find the
- 19:42Speaker 6: whole thing to be pretty traumatic and and I honor
- 19:46Speaker 6: that experience as well.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Right, let's switch, please.
- 19:51Speaker 6: Let's switch even come up.
- 19:53Speaker 4: No, no, no, we love it. We thought it was
- 19:55Speaker 4: an awesome.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Second I thought, no, we love it.
- 19:58Speaker 4: We want to be informative. Second, no, I'm I honestly,
- 20:04Speaker 4: I'm not. This isn't a bullshit joke. I love it
- 20:07Speaker 4: when people come on here and they explain something to
- 20:10Speaker 4: me and Donald and our crew here and or the
- 20:13Speaker 4: audience that they haven't know nothing about. Like you just
- 20:16Speaker 4: told a little, short, three minute story about something I
- 20:19Speaker 4: know nothing about. I find that very interesting and I'm
- 20:22Speaker 4: grateful for you for doing it.
- 20:23Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Thanks, Let's take a break.
- 20:26Speaker 3: We'll be right back after these fine words.
- 20:35Speaker 4: I want to talk about. You have the most incredible
- 20:37Speaker 4: career and the first time I remember, I mean you
- 20:41Speaker 4: really do. I mean, you have a career that is
- 20:43Speaker 4: to be envied because it's not only been so long,
- 20:46Speaker 4: but your segue into directing is just incredible. And I
- 20:51Speaker 4: just want to just go back to the very I
- 20:54Speaker 4: want to go back to I'm trying to be a
- 20:56Speaker 4: good host. I'll stop fucking cock blogging me. I want
- 20:58Speaker 4: to go back to the very beginning. Okay, now, I
- 21:01Speaker 4: first remember seeing you on in Catch Me as you Can.
- 21:05Speaker 4: But was Spider Man your first big thing?
- 21:08Speaker 6: The thing that, yeah, the thing that actually I wouldn't
- 21:11Speaker 6: say it put me on the map because nobody saw
- 21:14Speaker 6: the movie at the time. But what had American Summer
- 21:17Speaker 6: was my It was. It was the movie that I I,
- 21:20Speaker 6: you know, had to get my Sager. I had to
- 21:22Speaker 6: change my name in SAG for that movie.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:24Speaker 6: It was like because I there was an Elizabeth Mitchell.
- 21:28Speaker 6: She's a fabulous actress. She was on Lost for many years.
- 21:31Speaker 6: She's also blonde haired and blue eyed. That's my real name,
- 21:34Speaker 6: Elizabeth Mitchell for all the listeners who don't know. My
- 21:36Speaker 6: real name is Elizabeth Mitchell. And I had to change
- 21:40Speaker 6: my name when we were making because it was getting
- 21:42Speaker 6: too confusing. I was living in New York, so was
- 21:44Speaker 6: Elizabeth the other Elizabeth Mitchell. I was using like three names.
- 21:48Speaker 6: I couldn't give up my first name. And I figured, well,
- 21:51Speaker 6: women changed their last name when they get married. Not
- 21:53Speaker 6: that I was planning to, but some some do you know,
- 21:56Speaker 6: that's something that happens. So okay, let me figure this out.
- 21:58Speaker 6: I got to get a new last name. And all
- 22:01Speaker 6: the guys in what Hot were like, you know, we're
- 22:03Speaker 6: gonna we're gonna put you in the credits, like this
- 22:04Speaker 6: is going to be a cult classic, which is what
- 22:07Speaker 6: we all believed when we made it. And and so
- 22:10Speaker 6: I changed my name for you know, to Elizabeth Banks.
- 22:13Speaker 6: I'm in the credits. We that movie goes to Sundance
- 22:16Speaker 6: and it's a huge Sundance and this is like in
- 22:19Speaker 6: the heyday of Sundance.
- 22:21Speaker 4: You know, yeah, what year do you remember?
- 22:22Speaker 6: Two thousand one? Yeah, yeah, two thousand and two thousand
- 22:26Speaker 6: and one, and you know, this is like four or
- 22:30Speaker 6: five years after sex Salize and Videotape and like all
- 22:34Speaker 6: you know where it really became like movies were getting
- 22:36Speaker 6: bought out of it, stars were getting made out.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Of these movies, right, Yeah, Garden State was two thousand
- 22:41Speaker 4: and three there, so it was like it was the
- 22:43Speaker 4: Eye of the Storm exactly.
- 22:45Speaker 6: So so I get there, I'm in this little movie
- 22:48Speaker 6: that could we the movie. I think it's you know,
- 22:51Speaker 6: it's a big, big hole deal. And I met my
- 22:56Speaker 6: manager there, well, I met managers there, and then I
- 23:00Speaker 6: developed my relationship with my manager there. I got the
- 23:03Speaker 6: audition basically through those connections that I made literally at
- 23:08Speaker 6: dance parties at two o'clock in the morning after midnight
- 23:11Speaker 6: showing of Wade American Summer for Spider Man, and so
- 23:17Speaker 6: then I was auditioning to be Mary Jane Watson in
- 23:19Speaker 6: The New Spider Man with Toby maguire and so like
- 23:23Speaker 6: those kinds of things all happened out of that movie
- 23:26Speaker 6: and through that auditioning process and getting to know the
- 23:30Speaker 6: casting directors, which I'd been working in New York steadily.
- 23:34Speaker 6: I had done all the TV shows in New York
- 23:36Speaker 6: that you could basically do back then, which was Sex
- 23:39Speaker 6: and the City, Third Watch was on, Yeah, and uh,
- 23:46Speaker 6: and of course Law and Order, and I was on
- 23:48Speaker 6: the Law. I was on Law and Order s.
- 23:50Speaker 1: V U, Law Order and Law and Order SVU.
- 23:54Speaker 6: Now only s VU.
- 23:56Speaker 4: They're the same, They're the same universe. They are right,
- 23:59Speaker 4: they are so once you're once you're a victim on
- 24:02Speaker 4: one you can't be a victim on the other.
- 24:04Speaker 1: You could be a victim like nine times.
- 24:06Speaker 6: Really I wish I was the murderer so they didn't.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Have Oh, spoiler, spoiler.
- 24:13Speaker 6: I was very very memorable. Guys, you would love this episode.
- 24:17Speaker 6: I played a porn star on. My husband was Mark.
- 24:21Speaker 6: My husband on the show was Mark Paul Gossler. I
- 24:24Speaker 6: love her, m hm. He also he did gay porn
- 24:29Speaker 6: show and the two of us our dream was. My
- 24:34Speaker 6: character's dream was to go to Vegas to be in
- 24:37Speaker 6: a gang bang so she could get on the Howard
- 24:40Speaker 6: Stern Show show and get and get more money, you know,
- 24:45Speaker 6: make bigger money because we had a sick kid and
- 24:48Speaker 6: blah blah blah. Anyway, we end up, we end up
- 24:51Speaker 6: my husband and I end up conspiring to murder this like, uh,
- 24:54Speaker 6: this producer, this this porn producer for for cash. I
- 24:58Speaker 6: don't actually remember how it all down at the end.
- 25:01Speaker 4: Dan, I'm going to need that link found.
- 25:04Speaker 6: It's a fan. It's absolutely fantastic. I really couldn't be prouder.
- 25:09Speaker 6: I really played it to the hill. I'm still kind
- 25:12Speaker 6: of friendly with Marishka harget Day off that show. She
- 25:14Speaker 6: gave me some really good advice when I was on
- 25:16Speaker 6: that show.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I has a much beloved figure. People. People are
- 25:21Speaker 4: obsessed with her.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Let me ask you a question. When you when you
- 25:24Speaker 1: hit did Marishka ever and you saw her? Was she like,
- 25:28Speaker 1: holy shit, I remember you from fucking.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Sbu Yeah, when you were the poor star?
- 25:33Speaker 6: Yes, the answer the answer is yes, yes, how well
- 25:39Speaker 6: I look, I have to give a little Chris her
- 25:43Speaker 6: co star was in what had American Summer?
- 25:45Speaker 1: Got it?
- 25:46Speaker 4: That's right, that's right, maloney, maloney. He was on Scrubs too.
- 25:49Speaker 6: Yeah, maloney, Maloney. Chris Maloney was on was in What
- 25:53Speaker 6: Had American Summer, And so I think she also it's
- 25:56Speaker 6: not like it's not like I lived in a universe
- 25:57Speaker 6: that she had no idea about. I think she she
- 25:59Speaker 6: saw saw me in that as well.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I have a very similar story with Wesley Snipes.
- 26:05Speaker 5: Actually I did a guest star in one of his
- 26:08Speaker 5: mini television shows where like you, he had a show
- 26:13Speaker 5: in New York and he was the star of it,
- 26:15Speaker 5: one of the stars of it, and I guest starred
- 26:18Speaker 5: on it. And I wasn't even in a scene with him,
- 26:21Speaker 5: but I remember he walked me and my mom to
- 26:23Speaker 5: the subway station. Like five years later I get I
- 26:27Speaker 5: get this movie sugar Hill, and he remembered me. Or
- 26:30Speaker 5: three years later sugar Hill and he remembered me just
- 26:33Speaker 5: from the walk to the And I think he was trying.
- 26:36Speaker 1: To bang my mom. To be honest with you, you.
- 26:38Speaker 8: Know what I mean.
- 26:39Speaker 4: That's a good story.
- 26:43Speaker 6: Blade Blade had sex with Blade.
- 26:49Speaker 1: You know, my mom was pretty hot when she was younger.
- 26:53Speaker 5: You know, I'm keeping one hundred, like, and this ain't
- 26:56Speaker 5: me just saying this ain't just me being like in
- 26:59Speaker 5: love with his mama, Like all little boys are. My
- 27:01Speaker 5: mom was fine, man, like that ship would it would
- 27:04Speaker 5: used to be a pain in the ass to like
- 27:06Speaker 5: take the subway home like she would be with kids
- 27:11Speaker 5: and motherfuckers would still be like, hey, hey, duck skin,
- 27:16Speaker 5: hey like your hardcore, can I walk home?
- 27:21Speaker 1: I remember?
- 27:22Speaker 5: My mom would be so tired of carrying us. She'd
- 27:24Speaker 5: be like, fucking y'all, can walk me to the end
- 27:26Speaker 5: of this motherfucking to the end of when the turnstile
- 27:29Speaker 5: is there, and then we're gonna say goodbye.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Take my kids.
- 27:32Speaker 5: And I'd be like walking with some fucking dude, like
- 27:35Speaker 5: who the fuck this motherfucker?
- 27:37Speaker 4: You know what I mean.
- 27:38Speaker 2: But my mom would ever be like so funny.
- 27:40Speaker 5: Eleven o'clock at night, My pops is at the theater
- 27:43Speaker 5: working at National Black Theater, working, and she's on the
- 27:45Speaker 5: way home with us by herself, and we'll be in
- 27:49Speaker 5: little bitches.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Pick me up, Mama, pick me up, you know what
- 27:53Speaker 1: I mean. And she's like, fuck you too.
- 27:55Speaker 5: You could take my kids and help me to the
- 27:56Speaker 5: motherfucking you want to really be of service.
- 27:59Speaker 4: Guy the guy and fine, fine, I'll hold your kids right.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:07Speaker 6: It's like a like a payment for the harassment is not.
- 28:11Speaker 6: She was.
- 28:17Speaker 4: All right, so Ebanks. Then you get on an enormous movie,
- 28:21Speaker 4: Spider Man. That must have been a switch from a smaller,
- 28:25Speaker 4: little indie like.
- 28:26Speaker 6: Yeah, oh yeah, I mean I'd only been I'd only
- 28:29Speaker 6: ever made indies. It was the first time I think
- 28:32Speaker 6: I saw like Dolly track and stuff, you know what
- 28:35Speaker 6: I mean.
- 28:35Speaker 4: It was they could afford they could afford Dolly.
- 28:38Speaker 6: I've been on I've been on a couple of you know,
- 28:40Speaker 6: decent TV shows, but yeah, this was this was really cool.
- 28:43Speaker 6: It was also though, you know what's the most interesting
- 28:45Speaker 6: thing about it for me is because I remember it
- 28:49Speaker 6: so well, is so I played Betty. I ended up
- 28:53Speaker 6: playing Betty Brandon the movies. I did not get the
- 28:55Speaker 6: role of Mary Jeane Watson. That went too and I
- 28:57Speaker 6: was literally, I was literally told she too old. I'm
- 29:04Speaker 6: the same age as Toby maguire. All you need to know.
- 29:11Speaker 6: That's how Hollywood works, everybody. So I so I learned
- 29:17Speaker 6: that lesson real early on. And anyway, I played Betty
- 29:20Speaker 6: Brandt in the movie, which was like a consolation prize,
- 29:23Speaker 6: which was fine, I'll take it. And and I got
- 29:28Speaker 6: to work with JK. Simmons in Spider Man who's the
- 29:32Speaker 6: genius in these really fun what we kind of thought
- 29:35Speaker 6: of as the comic relief of the movie. And uh,
- 29:41Speaker 6: at any rate, I was on set for the end
- 29:44Speaker 6: of I want to say it's I don't know one
- 29:47Speaker 6: or two I forget, and I was watching Sam Raimi
- 29:52Speaker 6: the director, work with Bill Pope, the DP, and they
- 29:56Speaker 6: were setting up a shot and pretty much all the
- 29:59Speaker 6: time the shots were like you knew you came to set,
- 30:02Speaker 6: they knew what was happening. You know, there was not
- 30:04Speaker 6: a lot of room for like farting around. But because
- 30:07Speaker 6: we were just like in the office and it was
- 30:09Speaker 6: a little it was a built set, they could do
- 30:11Speaker 6: whatever they wanted with it. You know, we could move
- 30:12Speaker 6: the camera or whatever. I think they just thought like
- 30:14Speaker 6: it was a little less determined what was gonna happen. Sonday,
- 30:19Speaker 6: I got to watch Sam and Bill Pope decide how
- 30:22Speaker 6: they were gonna set up this one big shot of
- 30:24Speaker 6: j Jonah Jamison getting mad and whatever in the movie
- 30:28Speaker 6: for the very end of the film, I'm letting my
- 30:29Speaker 6: dog out because he's gonna keep going crazy until I
- 30:32Speaker 6: let him out. And in that moment, I thought, so
- 30:39Speaker 6: I watched them do it, and I thought, oh, okay, Well,
- 30:40Speaker 6: if I were setting this shot up, here's how I
- 30:43Speaker 6: would do it. I would push the dada and I
- 30:46Speaker 6: would push in and I would use this and I
- 30:47Speaker 6: would da da da. And it was the first time
- 30:52Speaker 6: that I thought, why am I directing this? Something in
- 30:56Speaker 6: my head like what am I doing? Like, God, this
- 30:58Speaker 6: isn't what I'm supposed to be doing. And then Sam
- 31:01Speaker 6: and Bill Pope set the shot up exactly how I
- 31:04Speaker 6: would have done it.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Wow, And I thought.
- 31:07Speaker 6: Oh wow that I asked, maybe I know something about something,
- 31:11Speaker 6: you know, Like it was like a seed in me
- 31:13Speaker 6: that was like, oh, well, it can't be that hard.
- 31:16Speaker 6: I figured that out. It's a genius, you know.
- 31:19Speaker 4: So that's the first moment. That's the first moment. That's
- 31:22Speaker 4: the first moment you remember being like, hmm, maybe I'll
- 31:25Speaker 4: direct one day.
- 31:26Speaker 6: It was the first moment that I really remember thinking
- 31:31Speaker 6: that there were that there were not really obstacles to
- 31:34Speaker 6: doing it for me, do you know what I mean.
- 31:36Speaker 6: I think a lot of people think that they're well,
- 31:39Speaker 6: I don't know how the camera works, or I don't
- 31:41Speaker 6: know about light, I don't know what the gaffer does.
- 31:43Speaker 6: It's like you go on a couple of sets and like,
- 31:46Speaker 6: you know, and if you if you're a if you're
- 31:48Speaker 6: a storyteller and you have a visual sense, because it's
- 31:52Speaker 6: a visual medium, and I remind people of that. That's
- 31:55Speaker 6: the problem I find with directors who don't understand you're
- 31:58Speaker 6: telling the story in pictures. You know, there's people too
- 32:02Speaker 6: that like have these scripts and they're they're so set
- 32:05Speaker 6: on the the script and the words, and the words
- 32:08Speaker 6: matter the most. And I'm always like, then, write novels,
- 32:11Speaker 6: because that is not number one thing when you get
- 32:14Speaker 6: to a movie set. You know the words, you have
- 32:18Speaker 6: to have the story, and you have to have the characters,
- 32:20Speaker 6: but then you have to collaborate with everybody to figure
- 32:23Speaker 6: out how to bring it to life in pictures. And anyway,
- 32:26Speaker 6: I think that was the first time that I really
- 32:28Speaker 6: remember thinking that I that I was like, oh my gosh,
- 32:31Speaker 6: I'm I came up with something that Sam Raimi and
- 32:34Speaker 6: Bill Pope came up with and that just made me
- 32:36Speaker 6: really excited, like just set a little fire inside me.
- 32:40Speaker 5: That's really like what you incredibly like what you just
- 32:42Speaker 5: said that it's about telling stories and pictures. A lot
- 32:45Speaker 5: of people try to tell stories with words, and it
- 32:48Speaker 5: really does the process for me at least that's just
- 32:53Speaker 5: for me, you know.
- 32:54Speaker 4: And also as an actor, when you get on a
- 32:56Speaker 4: set and the and the director doesn't know anything about
- 32:59Speaker 4: the camera, really, I find that frustrating because we've all,
- 33:04Speaker 4: as actor, has been on a set where sometimes they
- 33:07Speaker 4: lean towards being able to really direct actors well in acting.
- 33:11Speaker 4: Sometimes they lean towards being more of a techie guy
- 33:13Speaker 4: who knows how to the camera stuff in a in
- 33:16Speaker 4: a really incredible way. Then there's then there's people who
- 33:19Speaker 4: are the ideal who can do both. They're gonna move
- 33:21Speaker 4: the camera in a cool way, They're gonna they're gonna
- 33:23Speaker 4: have a sense of the tech stuff, but also aren't
- 33:25Speaker 4: unable to come to you and have an intelligent conversation
- 33:28Speaker 4: about what you should be feeling as an actor.
- 33:30Speaker 6: That's right, Yeah, Well, and who trusts you? Like I
- 33:34Speaker 6: remember on the set of Catch Me If You Can,
- 33:37Speaker 6: Which is funny that you mentioned that movie too, The
- 33:39Speaker 6: thing I learned on that sit.
- 33:42Speaker 4: With Spielberg, Yeah, the thing I learned from Stevie.
- 33:45Speaker 6: Can you learned that I learned from Steven Spielberg? Well, besides,
- 33:50Speaker 6: you know, he was so relaxed, he sat in video Village.
- 33:53Speaker 6: He was so generous with that. I mean, why why
- 33:57Speaker 6: do I get to go stand next to Steven Spielberg
- 33:58Speaker 6: and sit in video Village? I just did it, guys.
- 34:02Speaker 6: It was a real real I was not you know,
- 34:08Speaker 6: I'm was somebody who's like, I don't know, I won
- 34:10Speaker 6: the job. I have a right to be here, so
- 34:11Speaker 6: I'm gonna come over and stand with the director of
- 34:14Speaker 6: the scene.
- 34:14Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 34:15Speaker 6: That seemed natural to me, and so he was obviously
- 34:18Speaker 6: so generous with that too, because not every director wants
- 34:22Speaker 6: actors in video village, right, But he was. He was cool,
- 34:26Speaker 6: and we had these a couple of really incredible conversations.
- 34:30Speaker 6: But the main thing I noticed about him was he
- 34:33Speaker 6: was so relaxed. A couple things. He was so relaxed
- 34:36Speaker 6: in Video Village because he is literally working with the
- 34:40Speaker 6: best of the best of the best. He has total
- 34:42Speaker 6: trust in every department, right. He knows that. You know,
- 34:47Speaker 6: I'm sure there's never enough time and money to make anything,
- 34:50Speaker 6: no matter who you are, how big of a director
- 34:52Speaker 6: you're are. But he was real relaxed making that movie,
- 34:54Speaker 6: Like I trust I trust my DP, I trust my
- 34:57Speaker 6: set designer, I trust my locations matter trust. You know,
- 35:00Speaker 6: every I trust costumes, I trust makeup, so everybody. There
- 35:04Speaker 6: was just this wonderful communal sense of like everyone working
- 35:09Speaker 6: in the same direction. And he clearly gave everybody their
- 35:13Speaker 6: own sense of power over their departments, which not every
- 35:16Speaker 6: director does, right, So that was something that I really
- 35:18Speaker 6: saw him do, which I thought was amazing. And then
- 35:22Speaker 6: the other thing is that he is editing while he goes,
- 35:25Speaker 6: and not everybody is that. So he was very open
- 35:29Speaker 6: to allowing actors to kind of flow and like maybe
- 35:33Speaker 6: the end of the scene isn't the last word, and
- 35:35Speaker 6: you kind of go a little over, you build up
- 35:37Speaker 6: a little bit, or you know, there's you could you
- 35:39Speaker 6: could play inside of things. He was not rigid about
- 35:43Speaker 6: it at all. But he also would be like, I'm
- 35:46Speaker 6: never gonna I'm gonna cut out here, I'm never gonna
- 35:48Speaker 6: get that. Well, let's just like and very clear about
- 35:51Speaker 6: it with the actors, not like you did a bad job,
- 35:53Speaker 6: I don't like your improv just like that's just the end.
- 35:56Speaker 6: This scene ends here, so naturally, so why I'm not
- 35:59Speaker 6: going to need that and you just and it actually
- 36:02Speaker 6: gave you a real sense of like he's crafting the movie.
- 36:06Speaker 6: The whole time, And as a director, I found that
- 36:09Speaker 6: to be really interesting to watch somebody who's like, oh,
- 36:12Speaker 6: I know, no, no, I know exactly the ride that
- 36:14Speaker 6: I want to take the audience on.
- 36:16Speaker 4: Yeah, this is where it ends, I think when you
- 36:18Speaker 4: get to directing for myself too, especially when you're not
- 36:21Speaker 4: on that kind of Spielberg pace, when you're on when
- 36:25Speaker 4: I'm usually on, which is a single camera comedy pace
- 36:28Speaker 4: or an indie pace, you have to be thinking like,
- 36:30Speaker 4: all right, I'm going to have to cut shots for time.
- 36:33Speaker 4: What am I really going to use totally? And you
- 36:37Speaker 4: have to be shooting like that, being like, I can't
- 36:39Speaker 4: do six takes of this, master, I'm gonna be in
- 36:41Speaker 4: it for two seconds. I gotta just get all right,
- 36:44Speaker 4: two takes is fine. Good that I gotta get into
- 36:46Speaker 4: the meat of this because I'm running out of fucking time,
- 36:49Speaker 4: you know. So I learned that myself from watching directors
- 36:52Speaker 4: and watching particularly where most of my education was, which
- 36:55Speaker 4: was which was Scrubs. You know we did it was
- 36:58Speaker 4: it was watching all of those great actors who directed Scrubs,
- 37:01Speaker 4: who figured out how they could execute making an episode
- 37:04Speaker 4: of Scrubs in five days, which is such a which
- 37:06Speaker 4: was such good training for making indie movies, as you know,
- 37:10Speaker 4: really for.
- 37:10Speaker 6: Making anything, because it's about what's essential. I mean, Spielberg
- 37:14Speaker 6: was doing that on just on a larger scale. Right,
- 37:16Speaker 6: He's going like, I know what's essential to tell the story.
- 37:19Speaker 6: He's got more planning and more storyboarding and more time
- 37:23Speaker 6: and more, you know, and all the best apartment heads
- 37:25Speaker 6: and everybody's ideas have already been sort of intermixed by
- 37:27Speaker 6: the time he's there. Whereas you know that on indie
- 37:30Speaker 6: films you're kind of having to sometimes you have a
- 37:33Speaker 6: grand plan, but it's all once it goes sideways. There's
- 37:37Speaker 6: no extra money to like have the extra hour of
- 37:39Speaker 6: the day. So now you've got to go like, okay, wait, wait,
- 37:41Speaker 6: I had a plan. I wanted all these beautiful things,
- 37:43Speaker 6: but what is essential to tell the story? And that's
- 37:46Speaker 6: a great exercise to do. And you, I know you
- 37:49Speaker 6: do commercials too, and I find that's even sometimes even
- 37:53Speaker 6: more demanding. It it's such a different storytelling structure, right,
- 37:59Speaker 6: like yeah, in thirty seconds or forty forty five seconds,
- 38:02Speaker 6: fifteen seconds, like I got to introduce this idea of
- 38:05Speaker 6: the audience, I got to surprise them in some way
- 38:08Speaker 6: so that they didn't see it coming. So it's memorable.
- 38:11Speaker 6: And then I got to wrap it up with like,
- 38:12Speaker 6: and I gotta sell the whole time.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Well, and you have to and you have to do
- 38:17Speaker 1: what the advertisers want you to do.
- 38:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:19Speaker 5: So plan is you're trying to make it so that
- 38:24Speaker 5: your plan is actually their plan. Their plan checked them
- 38:28Speaker 5: into thinking this is your plan.
- 38:29Speaker 6: We're doing it totally.
- 38:32Speaker 4: Yeah, tell us a little about it. Did you have
- 38:34Speaker 4: to audition with Leonardo DiCaprio for that movie or did
- 38:37Speaker 4: you just do it on your own?
- 38:39Speaker 6: No, I just did it on my own. I still
- 38:40Speaker 6: remember that audition though, because I remember what was Debzay,
- 38:45Speaker 6: who I use as my casting director on a lot
- 38:48Speaker 6: of things I love, and she cast Seabiscuit as well,
- 38:51Speaker 6: So catch me if you can. That audition. I just
- 38:54Speaker 6: remember we were supposed to be dancing or whatever, and
- 38:56Speaker 6: I did like I'm going to do it in this
- 38:58Speaker 6: little box right here.
- 38:59Speaker 1: I was.
- 39:00Speaker 6: I went like, oh my god, and then I sort
- 39:02Speaker 6: of like threw myself like out of the frame, like
- 39:05Speaker 6: I like wiped I like wiped frame at the end
- 39:09Speaker 6: with like while I was like giddaly laughing and being
- 39:11Speaker 6: danced off my feet or whatever. And I remember doing that,
- 39:16Speaker 6: and I think that's what got me the job.
- 39:18Speaker 4: What did you mean her laugh?
- 39:20Speaker 6: I mean I think we I have a I have
- 39:22Speaker 6: a I have a pretty good laugh. I have a
- 39:24Speaker 6: laugh that you know people remember, And I think that's
- 39:30Speaker 6: probably what got it for me, Right, was like like,
- 39:33Speaker 6: I you know, you giggle box, like like you know,
- 39:37Speaker 6: like Leonardo DiCaprio and something. It's not hard to imagine, right,
- 39:41Speaker 6: Leonardo DiCaprio when you're twenty five years old.
- 39:46Speaker 5: Listen, I think every dude on the planet it was
- 39:49Speaker 5: either Brad Pitton fight Club or Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic.
- 39:53Speaker 1: You wanted to be one of the motherfuckers.
- 39:55Speaker 6: Right, Yeah, totally, Yeah, that was that.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Am I wrong?
- 39:59Speaker 6: No?
- 39:59Speaker 4: Both for me was both. I remember I went to
- 40:01Speaker 4: see Titanic with my dad. I was a struggling actor.
- 40:03Speaker 4: I was barely getting any work and we came out
- 40:06Speaker 4: Titanic and it was so incredible and Leo was so incredible,
- 40:09Speaker 4: and my dad turning me, went huh, he's about your age,
- 40:12Speaker 4: isn't he.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Yeah, Leo was the humbling experience for a lot of us. Man.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Yeah, man, I was like I was like, I felt
- 40:23Speaker 4: so low because I was just not getting any work
- 40:26Speaker 4: at the time, and I was like, yeah, yeah, dad,
- 40:27Speaker 4: Leo was about mining.
- 40:31Speaker 6: Well, you guys, he's been working since he was like
- 40:34Speaker 6: eight or something.
- 40:35Speaker 4: You know, I know, I know. It was so wait,
- 40:38Speaker 4: what was that?
- 40:38Speaker 6: Like?
- 40:38Speaker 4: I think our audience would like to know what it
- 40:41Speaker 4: was like when you are all of a sudden across
- 40:44Speaker 4: from Leo in a in a scene. Was that was
- 40:48Speaker 4: that intimidating for you? Are you able to just go
- 40:50Speaker 4: okay because you were so green at the time relatively
- 40:53Speaker 4: were you. Were you able to just be like give
- 40:55Speaker 4: yourself a pep talk and go okay. It's just anybody
- 40:57Speaker 4: liked how how did that feel?
- 41:00Speaker 6: Yeah? I mean a little a little bit. It was.
- 41:03Speaker 6: It was again, it's the well I got here, so
- 41:06Speaker 6: I must have done something right. So like, don't you know,
- 41:09Speaker 6: I think women in Hollywood have to give away so
- 41:14Speaker 6: much power all the time. We have to like really defer,
- 41:18Speaker 6: especially when we're young and pretty and trying to get jobs.
- 41:21Speaker 6: But you have to walk this fine line of like,
- 41:23Speaker 6: I'm giving away a bunch of my power, but I
- 41:25Speaker 6: also want to like have confidence and own this and
- 41:28Speaker 6: be here for a reason, And I walked that line
- 41:31Speaker 6: a lot as a younger female actor. And but but
- 41:35Speaker 6: I mostly aired on the side of like super overconfidence, honestly,
- 41:40Speaker 6: you know, and just like I'm here for a reason.
- 41:44Speaker 6: We're fellow actors. You're my this, you're my you know,
- 41:48Speaker 6: scene mate, so and and also like I want to
- 41:51Speaker 6: be great in the scene and so and I want
- 41:54Speaker 6: my partner to be great. Like I really think about
- 41:56Speaker 6: it as as a partnership in those moments, you know,
- 41:59Speaker 6: like I'm here, I need you to look good. So
- 42:01Speaker 6: I look good. Let's all look good. Like let's bring
- 42:04Speaker 6: our a game. There's no part and around. You don't
- 42:06Speaker 6: show up and be like I don't know what should
- 42:09Speaker 6: I do? Oh my god, You're like, okay, I'm this character.
- 42:12Speaker 6: I'm here to do it.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Good for you. I gotta say I love what you're saying.
- 42:16Speaker 4: And I felt that myself when I'm acting opposite someone
- 42:20Speaker 4: who's intimidating or or I'm directing them, and I have
- 42:23Speaker 4: to give myself a pep talk, like, dude, no one's
- 42:25Speaker 4: gonna give a fuck in a year that you were nervous.
- 42:28Speaker 4: You need to show the fuck up. I'm literally saying
- 42:32Speaker 4: that to myself. I did this movie with de Niro
- 42:35Speaker 4: where I that fucking unfortunately still doesn't come out, but
- 42:38Speaker 4: I had a big scene where I'm screaming at him
- 42:41Speaker 4: and I slap him and I'm just fucking going at
- 42:44Speaker 4: de Niro, and I had to give myself this pep talk,
- 42:46Speaker 4: like this is a big moment in your life. You're
- 42:49Speaker 4: not going to be a whimp. You were going to
- 42:50Speaker 4: be like you're saying, his partner. And a year from now,
- 42:54Speaker 4: when this comes out, you're gonna want to say to yourself,
- 42:57Speaker 4: be proud that you went toe to toe with a
- 42:58Speaker 4: living legend, and not that you were intimidated or nervous
- 43:01Speaker 4: all that. That's right, But I have to give myself
- 43:03Speaker 4: that pep talk. Still.
- 43:05Speaker 6: Yeah, we all, yeah, we all do whatever version of
- 43:08Speaker 6: that we have to do when you're working with people
- 43:10Speaker 6: who you freaking worship.
- 43:12Speaker 8: You know.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Of course, when you slapped a Nero and you asked
- 43:16Speaker 5: him a bit hurt, was he like a little bit?
- 43:22Speaker 4: I also, and when that scene with de Niro is
- 43:26Speaker 4: like I want him to be like okay, Like I
- 43:28Speaker 4: want him to have the vibe of like, oh shit, okay,
- 43:31Speaker 4: he came to play. You know, I didn't want so
- 43:34Speaker 4: it was a fake slap. It wasn't like a real slap.
- 43:37Speaker 4: It was you know, it was a comedic slap. Oh yeah,
- 43:39Speaker 4: but yeah it was funny.
- 43:40Speaker 1: That's I mean, that's really interesting.
- 43:43Speaker 5: Uh Like it seems like it it really like once
- 43:46Speaker 5: you hit the ground, you really hit the ground running too.
- 43:48Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 5: I mean like it was like boom and then bam
- 43:53Speaker 5: and then all of a sudden it became like when
- 43:56Speaker 5: we were doing scrubs, you said you were trying to
- 43:59Speaker 5: get pregnant. It seemed like five years later you were
- 44:02Speaker 5: executive producing movies.
- 44:04Speaker 4: You're going too fast. You're going too fast.
- 44:06Speaker 6: Sorry, no, I was. I was doing that. I was.
- 44:10Speaker 4: Before we get to you taking a concrete we got
- 44:12Speaker 4: to go to break. I want to take a break
- 44:14Speaker 4: and we come back. We do want to talk about
- 44:16Speaker 4: really for me, the time where you first where I
- 44:20Speaker 4: was like, holy shit, this woman is so funny. I
- 44:24Speaker 4: mean it was four year old virgin. That's when I
- 44:25Speaker 4: was like, this is this is the next level ship.
- 44:29Speaker 4: That's great, and we'll be right back. I've read these
- 44:32Speaker 4: fine words. Breaks here, Elizabethbanks, we just go right into it. Yeah,
- 44:44Speaker 4: So tell us about four year old virgin because to me,
- 44:48Speaker 4: I had, first.
- 44:49Speaker 5: Of all, you stole the you stole the the trailer.
- 44:52Speaker 5: The trailer was what it was, you know what I mean, Like,
- 44:56Speaker 5: that's what freaking really jumped off, like everybody was on
- 45:00Speaker 5: to see that movie because that line, it's the last
- 45:03Speaker 5: line in the trailer, and it's the funniest line in
- 45:05Speaker 5: the truck.
- 45:05Speaker 4: Can't you even remember the trailer, dude.
- 45:07Speaker 1: I haven't, dude.
- 45:07Speaker 5: That ship was hilarious, Like it's all these funny moments,
- 45:09Speaker 5: funny moments. And he says something about I'm gonna put
- 45:12Speaker 5: I got a bicycle and I'm gonna put it in
- 45:14Speaker 5: my trunk. And the bank goes and she goes, oh,
- 45:19Speaker 5: button around and that's the right and and that's how
- 45:23Speaker 5: and that's how the trailer ended. And I remember being like,
- 45:26Speaker 5: holy shit. I think everybody went to see the movie
- 45:29Speaker 5: because of that.
- 45:30Speaker 6: Yeah, it's funny.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Donald.
- 45:31Speaker 6: People come up to me and they're like, back then
- 45:35Speaker 6: and not not so much anymore. Now. It's a lot
- 45:37Speaker 6: of hunger games that is mahogany, But back then it
- 45:40Speaker 6: was a lot of like say the line, say the line,
- 45:43Speaker 6: put the bunk, put the bike in the trunk. And
- 45:45Speaker 6: I was like, I don't, that's not my line. Crowd
- 45:48Speaker 6: says that line, like do the line? Do the bike
- 45:53Speaker 6: in the trunk line, you know, And I was like, Okay,
- 45:55Speaker 6: the whole bike in the trunk line is me going?
- 46:04Speaker 4: But you were I mean to me, I had seen
- 46:06Speaker 4: you in Sea Biscuit, I'd seen you in Catching If
- 46:08Speaker 4: you Can, But the first time I was like, this
- 46:11Speaker 4: woman is not only so beautiful but fucking hilarious was
- 46:16Speaker 4: for your version. So tell us about that experience, because
- 46:18Speaker 4: that really, to me, must have really launched you to
- 46:21Speaker 4: another stratosphere.
- 46:22Speaker 6: Well, it definitely reset a lot of things that were
- 46:24Speaker 6: going on in my career, you know. At the you know,
- 46:26Speaker 6: I'm I'm classically trained. I went to drama school school
- 46:30Speaker 6: and I went to act in San Francisco, so you know,
- 46:34Speaker 6: I was like a theater nerd. And and when I
- 46:39Speaker 6: came in and I got catched me If you Can
- 46:41Speaker 6: and See Biscuit, which was, you know, nominated for a
- 46:43Speaker 6: ton of Oscars, and so I was sort of getting
- 46:46Speaker 6: known in the industry as that kind of actress. I
- 46:49Speaker 6: was getting compared a lot to like Laura Lenny and
- 46:53Speaker 6: uh whatever. Anyway, dramatic actresses, you know, and the forty
- 46:59Speaker 6: year old Vergi thing. But I had done what had
- 47:01Speaker 6: American Summer, so like I knew that I was funny,
- 47:03Speaker 6: and I knew there were some people in the industry
- 47:05Speaker 6: that knew I was funny, but no one I wasn't
- 47:08Speaker 6: doing it. And the other thing that was happening to
- 47:09Speaker 6: me is I wasn't getting any freaking rom coms, which
- 47:12Speaker 6: is it's literally why I came into Hollywood. I was like,
- 47:16Speaker 6: that's me. I see myself. I'm Meg Ryan, I'm Julia Roberts, Like,
- 47:21Speaker 6: let's go. That's what I'm supposed to be doing. And
- 47:23Speaker 6: then I didn't get any of those jobs, and I've thought,
- 47:27Speaker 6: oh no, something's gone sideways here. I'm the serious actress.
- 47:32Speaker 6: And then I did this movie Heights with Glenn Close
- 47:34Speaker 6: in New York for merchant Ivory, you know, very fancy
- 47:38Speaker 6: fancy pants stuff. So I was I believe I was
- 47:42Speaker 6: the last person to audition for the role of Beth
- 47:45Speaker 6: in four year Old virgin I went. Steve Carrell was
- 47:48Speaker 6: there because I think he was like also a producer
- 47:50Speaker 6: or something in the movie. He was very involved with
- 47:52Speaker 6: the casting process at the end there, and I only
- 47:56Speaker 6: auditioned one time I went in and there and we
- 48:00Speaker 6: was all improv. I mean I think there was a scene,
- 48:02Speaker 6: but eventually it devolved into improv, like yeah with Steve
- 48:08Speaker 6: kraw So I it devolved into improv with Steve, and
- 48:12Speaker 6: I ended up basically giving him a lap dance and
- 48:16Speaker 6: I was just like hysterically laughing, thinking it was hilarious,
- 48:20Speaker 6: and him being super uncomfortable like I don't understand what's happening,
- 48:22Speaker 6: and me just being like I'm just using you as
- 48:24Speaker 6: a chair or whatever. I don't know why I said,
- 48:27Speaker 6: and you know, and I kind of left there just
- 48:30Speaker 6: honestly being like this was so fun great to meet
- 48:34Speaker 6: all you guys, like, you know, truly just thought it
- 48:39Speaker 6: was really funny. Seth Rogan was a huge well had
- 48:42Speaker 6: American Summer fan, so he knew like that, you know,
- 48:45Speaker 6: like she he liked my cred. But I don't know
- 48:48Speaker 6: the judge. I don't know if jud really knew or whatever.
- 48:50Speaker 6: But yeah, next thing I knew was I was Beth
- 48:54Speaker 6: and they were like, will you masturbate in a bathtub?
- 48:56Speaker 4: And I was like, yues, So I remember you're just
- 49:00Speaker 4: thinking you were so fearless. That's the thought that came
- 49:03Speaker 4: to my mind. When I saw in the movie was like,
- 49:05Speaker 4: you had such courage. I could tell you were riffing.
- 49:07Speaker 4: I could tell a lot of that stuff wasn't written.
- 49:10Speaker 4: And I was just so impressed by how funny you were,
- 49:13Speaker 4: how free you were, how you're going toe to toe
- 49:15Speaker 4: with Corel, who's a genius at that genre.
- 49:17Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, totally a genius. Yeah, yeah, Honestly I
- 49:20Speaker 6: approached that with just like this is a lark, this
- 49:23Speaker 6: is fun.
- 49:23Speaker 1: You know.
- 49:24Speaker 6: They shut down that movie like day three. Mary parent
- 49:27Speaker 6: was one of the producers, and she kind of came
- 49:29Speaker 6: a side and she's like, so we're not shooting. We're
- 49:31Speaker 6: on hold for a few hours. I remember because the
- 49:35Speaker 6: early dailies, so we shot three days. And you remember
- 49:38Speaker 6: the guys they I think that what they had, what
- 49:41Speaker 6: we had already shot, was the stuff in the store
- 49:43Speaker 6: where they all worked. They all worked at like a
- 49:45Speaker 6: best buy type place, and they were wearing gray shirts.
- 49:48Speaker 6: And I was there. I did the little bit with
- 49:50Speaker 6: my like you know, thong hanging out and whatever, and
- 49:54Speaker 6: I guess the word came back like this doesn't look
- 49:57Speaker 6: like a comedy, Like he looks like he's a he
- 49:59Speaker 6: seemed like he's a serial killer and they're all wearing
- 50:02Speaker 6: gray shirts and they should be wearing red shirts or
- 50:05Speaker 6: something like. It was all about like the costuming is wrong,
- 50:07Speaker 6: the tone is off. We don't know what this movie is.
- 50:09Speaker 6: And you have to remember too, that Judge shoots forever.
- 50:12Speaker 6: He this is when we were still using film, and
- 50:15Speaker 6: he would shoot out a full mag right, so like
- 50:17Speaker 6: a thousand feet of film per scene, so much footage
- 50:21Speaker 6: of just riffing, riffing, riffing, and you know, we would
- 50:23Speaker 6: build on improv and if he likes that, he had
- 50:26Speaker 6: little He had assistants who would write down like things.
- 50:29Speaker 6: So if you were like and then I'm gonna climb
- 50:30Speaker 6: that mountain over you and then you you know, and
- 50:32Speaker 6: he'd called cut ten minutes later and he'd be like, Okay,
- 50:35Speaker 6: what do we like And this assistant wuld be like,
- 50:36Speaker 6: you like to think about the mountain, like, okay, remember
- 50:39Speaker 6: the mountain thing, so a little more of the mountain,
- 50:41Speaker 6: but maybe do this on the other reverse. Whenever I went, okay, great,
- 50:43Speaker 6: so now we're gonna build the mountain bit or whatever. Right,
- 50:47Speaker 6: And that's how we remembered like what to what we
- 50:50Speaker 6: were saying, you know, like how we built jokes over
- 50:53Speaker 6: the course of it.
- 50:54Speaker 4: So I can imagine just the luxury, just some mean
- 50:57Speaker 4: pause for the audience. That is very rare to have,
- 50:59Speaker 4: the luxury, especially back in the days when people were
- 51:03Speaker 4: actually shooting film because it's so expensive. And I think
- 51:06Speaker 4: Judd like has the records in Hollywood for a mount
- 51:09Speaker 4: of film shot on anything, because she I've heard that
- 51:12Speaker 4: would let the camera roll and roll and roll and
- 51:14Speaker 4: let everyone just improv and improv and I'm hearing this
- 51:17Speaker 4: for the first time, and then he would notate, Oh,
- 51:19Speaker 4: go back to that improv and build on that, right, yeah.
- 51:22Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, And so it was really fun, but so
- 51:25Speaker 6: the whole So my point really is just like the
- 51:28Speaker 6: set was so free, there was no you had to
- 51:32Speaker 6: keep going. You didn't have a choice as an actor.
- 51:34Speaker 6: It was like, you know, you know, you go until
- 51:36Speaker 6: they call cut. Well, if they don't call cut for
- 51:38Speaker 6: ten minutes, you got to stay in character and stay
- 51:41Speaker 6: in the scene and stay in the moment and come
- 51:43Speaker 6: up with some shit to say the whole time, you know,
- 51:45Speaker 6: and just keep going.
- 51:46Speaker 4: And you're in a scene with some of the funniest
- 51:48Speaker 4: fucking people.
- 51:49Speaker 6: Yes, yes, they're genius, is not everybody is good at
- 51:53Speaker 6: this right.
- 51:56Speaker 4: No, we know that you two are.
- 52:00Speaker 6: Very fucking good at it, so good at it. No,
- 52:04Speaker 6: you guys are really good at it, and and you
- 52:07Speaker 6: know it's really fun. Donald knows that I've directed Donald
- 52:09Speaker 6: a little bit too, Like I like this vibe, but
- 52:12Speaker 6: I'm also someone who I don't want to go ten
- 52:13Speaker 6: minutes every I don't want to be in the editing
- 52:16Speaker 6: room the whole time.
- 52:17Speaker 1: Right, right, you cut a lot of my ship out
- 52:20Speaker 1: of Pitch Perfect. I'm just going to put it out there.
- 52:22Speaker 1: You cut a lot of my ship out of it.
- 52:28Speaker 6: Donald, I had to cut a lot of all the
- 52:30Speaker 6: old guys stuff out of that thing. Also, he was
- 52:33Speaker 6: supposed to come back and be a trouble hanger like again, and.
- 52:36Speaker 5: Again, I'm still upset about that I was available. The
- 52:40Speaker 5: show that I was on wouldn't released me for the
- 52:42Speaker 5: fifth day, is what happened.
- 52:43Speaker 6: That's right.
- 52:44Speaker 5: If it was four days, I was good to go.
- 52:46Speaker 5: But if it was five days, they were like.
- 52:49Speaker 6: He Donald was supposed to be in the scene with
- 52:51Speaker 6: the trouble Hangers with like, yeah, all of the football players.
- 52:56Speaker 1: You know and everything.
- 52:58Speaker 6: Yeah, in with with the Green Bay Packers and the
- 53:00Speaker 6: whole thing.
- 53:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I wasn't supposed to do to beat box anymore.
- 53:03Speaker 1: I was supposed to say all that stuff is.
- 53:05Speaker 4: A natural, perfect pivot to pitch perfect because this was
- 53:09Speaker 4: another you don't want to games. That's after I'm following
- 53:14Speaker 4: her the order of her epic career. Okay, you mind
- 53:19Speaker 4: going to order?
- 53:20Speaker 1: Okay, bad Dog.
- 53:21Speaker 4: In twenty twelve, you produced what has become what became
- 53:26Speaker 4: a giant phenomenon which pitched perfect. How did what? This
- 53:34Speaker 4: was your? You didn't direct the first one, did you?
- 53:36Speaker 6: No? I did not. Jason Moore directed the first movie.
- 53:38Speaker 4: And you directed the second one. I did, yeah, and
- 53:41Speaker 4: then direct the third.
- 53:42Speaker 6: One or no, no, I did not know.
- 53:45Speaker 5: But this was your baby, right, we all of a
- 53:47Speaker 5: sudden became like a secret spy and stuff like that.
- 53:54Speaker 4: Well, by the time you get to three Donald, someone
- 53:56Speaker 4: has to become a spy. Elizabeth Banks, how did that
- 54:00Speaker 4: come about? Because that's your first big producing credit, and gosh,
- 54:05Speaker 4: what a fucking phenomenon that was. I can still hear
- 54:07Speaker 4: the cup song in my head. Yeah, how did that happen?
- 54:10Speaker 1: Didn't you write on that too?
- 54:12Speaker 6: I did?
- 54:13Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 54:13Speaker 6: I yes, I did, yes, of course, But like the
- 54:16Speaker 6: the main thing that happened was my husband Max. You
- 54:20Speaker 6: guys know, well he he heard he heard about and
- 54:25Speaker 6: then read the book Proposal for Pitch Perfect, which was
- 54:29Speaker 6: a book written by Mickey Rapkin, this you know, friend
- 54:32Speaker 6: of ours for forever now who went to Cornell and
- 54:35Speaker 6: sang a cappella and did like a behind the scenes
- 54:38Speaker 6: of that. He was a writer at the time for
- 54:40Speaker 6: either GQ or Esquire I can't remember which. I think GQ,
- 54:44Speaker 6: and so you know, he was a he was an
- 54:46Speaker 6: established magazine writer and he decided to like write this
- 54:50Speaker 6: book and it was really funny. I had a lot
- 54:52Speaker 6: of the funny bits in it, and and one of
- 54:54Speaker 6: the main storylines in it was about this group from
- 54:57Speaker 6: the University of Oregon who was who were the first
- 55:00Speaker 6: all female group to win or go to the finals
- 55:04Speaker 6: of the i ccas the Ikas, which is the big
- 55:07Speaker 6: competition in America. So that became sort of like the
- 55:11Speaker 6: seed of the whole thing. And then I was working
- 55:15Speaker 6: on thirty Rock at the time, and I knew Kay Cannon.
- 55:18Speaker 6: She was a young writer on the show. I had
- 55:21Speaker 6: made a movie with her then husband, Jason Sedeikis, So
- 55:25Speaker 6: we were all kind of like friendly in New York
- 55:27Speaker 6: and she called me about another movie idea that she
- 55:30Speaker 6: wanted to do. I think it was called the z
- 55:32Speaker 6: List or something, and I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 55:35Speaker 6: that sounds fun. Yeah maybe. But we have this book
- 55:38Speaker 6: called pitch Perfect. Would you want to you know, work
- 55:42Speaker 6: on a treatment for it? And the reason that we
- 55:44Speaker 6: needed someone so fast was that we were not the
- 55:46Speaker 6: only people to pitch the book. The book was also
- 55:50Speaker 6: being pitched by these other guys who did acappella who
- 55:54Speaker 6: had a very different take than us, And so we
- 55:56Speaker 6: were only given like two weeks to come up with
- 56:00Speaker 6: the take, and we had to take it out to
- 56:02Speaker 6: We got like three studios, Universal being one of them,
- 56:06Speaker 6: the Weinstein Company interestingly one of them.
- 56:09Speaker 4: And you know expression wait wait, Pete Holmes taught us
- 56:13Speaker 4: an expression Scandal noted Scandal.
- 56:16Speaker 6: Noted Scandal noted tm tm. After the scan scy.
- 56:20Speaker 4: Wel that I stole that from Pete Holmes because on
- 56:22Speaker 4: his podcast, you're allowed to if something like that comes up.
- 56:25Speaker 4: You don't want to go down to my rabbit, all
- 56:26Speaker 4: just go Scandal noted Scandal.
- 56:28Speaker 6: That's right, it's well done. I'm going to steal that
- 56:30Speaker 6: note too. Oh and so anyway, we had to come
- 56:33Speaker 6: up with this thing like really fast, and so Kate
- 56:36Speaker 6: Kay was came out to La. We sat around our
- 56:38Speaker 6: dining room table. I remember we decided very early on
- 56:42Speaker 6: that the first thing that was going to happen was
- 56:43Speaker 6: that Kay was going to blow a pitch pipe at
- 56:45Speaker 6: the beginning of the pitch and go like and then
- 56:51Speaker 6: we were gonna like match pitch, and we sang in
- 56:54Speaker 6: the pitch. She and I sang in the pitch together,
- 56:57Speaker 6: and we did this whole pitch and I mean, I
- 56:59Speaker 6: have such, you know, great memories of us doing it.
- 57:02Speaker 6: And I remember the guy, you know, Peter Kramer, who
- 57:05Speaker 6: bought it at Universal, to his ever lasting credit, we
- 57:10Speaker 6: had more of a like a Super Bad. We thought
- 57:13Speaker 6: it would be like if Michael Sarah and Christopher min'splas
- 57:18Speaker 6: like went to Dartmouth at the end of that movie
- 57:21Speaker 6: and then got into a cappella and then met up
- 57:24Speaker 6: with it like the Lady acapella singers. We kind of
- 57:26Speaker 6: had that version of the movie like it was always
- 57:29Speaker 6: boys against the girls, but it was not. It was
- 57:32Speaker 6: very evenly waited and and to his credit, he also said, really,
- 57:35Speaker 6: just make it about the girls, like, don't worry about
- 57:37Speaker 6: the guy, like let the guy group be the bad guys,
- 57:40Speaker 6: weighed towards the women, and and then and then that's
- 57:43Speaker 6: how the script was written, like really fast because we
- 57:47Speaker 6: had a great pitch. Then we waited for five years
- 57:51Speaker 6: to make the movie. Well, number one Glee came out.
- 57:57Speaker 4: Ah, and yeah, wee cock blocked you geek.
- 58:00Speaker 6: Glee definitely caught block us. Did you ever do it
- 58:03Speaker 6: a little while?
- 58:05Speaker 1: No?
- 58:05Speaker 6: I never, I never did. I did not know ex Glee.
- 58:09Speaker 4: No, but Elizabethanks has been on so many popular television
- 58:13Speaker 4: shows that she could.
- 58:14Speaker 5: She's been so many popular, so many popular I'm saying
- 58:17Speaker 5: that like the James Gun of It All Man, there's
- 58:21Speaker 5: like so many things.
- 58:22Speaker 4: That Blanks and one of those people that you could
- 58:25Speaker 4: be like, oh, yeah, of course I did the three
- 58:27Speaker 4: episodes of Glee.
- 58:30Speaker 5: You're not right, She's right, though we skipped over the
- 58:34Speaker 5: whole James Gun of It All Man, Like James were
- 58:38Speaker 5: like the two that that's the go to. That's I'm
- 58:41Speaker 5: surprised you're not in Guardians? Are you in Guardians?
- 58:43Speaker 1: You're probably no, I'm not.
- 58:45Speaker 8: No.
- 58:45Speaker 6: I we did have a conversation about something very long ago,
- 58:49Speaker 6: but I couldn't do it at the time. I think
- 58:50Speaker 6: I was directing. I think I was doing something I
- 58:53Speaker 6: don't remember.
- 58:54Speaker 4: Listen, the truth is, The truth is your career is
- 58:55Speaker 4: really a three hour conversation. But I'm trying to give
- 58:58Speaker 4: the audience the hour long version.
- 59:00Speaker 6: I just like telling stories anyway, because people people love
- 59:02Speaker 6: to hear how things start. Yes, so do I think
- 59:05Speaker 6: people I was thinking people think like, oh, well, now
- 59:07Speaker 6: it exists in the world. That must have been easy,
- 59:09Speaker 6: and like, no, no, no, no, it was so hard.
- 59:13Speaker 6: We had a great script. We had, we've you know,
- 59:15Speaker 6: we've we've attached its director. We pulled out of the theaters.
- 59:19Speaker 6: We he did Avenue Q and he was working on
- 59:21Speaker 6: Book of Mormon and we ended up, you know, and
- 59:24Speaker 6: he just got the sense of humor of this movie.
- 59:26Speaker 6: And we knew he could do the musical numbers which
- 59:28Speaker 6: we knew nothing about, and right and like, how do
- 59:31Speaker 6: you put on this this movie musical? And the casting
- 59:33Speaker 6: process was incredible and we re really wrote to a
- 59:36Speaker 6: lot of the characters. Anna Kendrick auditioned with the cup
- 59:40Speaker 6: song that was not in the script. She auditioned with
- 59:43Speaker 6: that and then and we were.
- 59:45Speaker 5: Like, ye, Award nominated actress audition for your movie.
- 59:50Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 59:50Speaker 4: She wasn't nominated.
- 59:51Speaker 1: Yes she was.
- 59:52Speaker 6: I think she was, Yes she was. I think she
- 59:54Speaker 6: had that.
- 59:55Speaker 4: Okay, well then she still have to prove that she
- 59:57Speaker 4: can sing in a really amazing.
- 59:58Speaker 6: I mean, she'd been on Broadway, so.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Musical.
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: And it was not our call. The studio, the studio,
- 1:00:06Speaker 6: we were like baby producers. They didn't know us. The
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: studio wanted to approve every single person that we cast
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: the movie. And you know who are a lot of
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: great people came through that room who have gone on
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: to do awesome things that didn't end up in Pitch Perfect.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: Yeah, well, Anna was perfect.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: She was the whole cast was perfect.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: And that she auditioned with the cup song that was
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: that's so cool that she that she chose that as
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: her audition song.
- 1:00:30Speaker 6: Yep. I had worked with her right before on what
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: to Expect when You're Expecting, and Rebel Wilson plays my
- 1:00:38Speaker 6: assistant in that movie, and so I knew, like you know,
- 1:00:43Speaker 6: so there was just like a lot of synergy happening
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: in the world at that time too.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Let's take a break.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: We'll be right back after these fine words.
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: This segment of Fake Doctor's Real Friends has brought to

- 1:01:12Speaker 4: comes from Kate d.
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: Love the podcast in the show so much. I'm rewatching
- 1:01:18Speaker 7: it again and anytime I mentioned it to my mom,
- 1:01:20Speaker 7: she has to bring up her Scrubs story. She went
- 1:01:24Speaker 7: to high school with Bill Lawrence and is convinced he
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: had a massive crush on her. Her name is Kim
- 1:01:31Speaker 7: maiden name Robinson, so she's also convinced Bill loosely modeled
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: doctor Kim Briggs Elizabeth Banks character after her. She listened
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: to a podcast episode he was on to see if
- 1:01:41Speaker 7: you had mentioned her.
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: He did not.
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: I have to know if Bill remembers my mom and
- 1:01:46Speaker 7: or based doctor Kim Briggs off of her. I've attached
- 1:01:48Speaker 7: a current photo of my mom for a reference. Love
- 1:01:51Speaker 7: you all so much, Katie Dunn.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: Well, this is the ultimate ask Bill, Joel you got
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: to get on this. Yeah, I think we're This is
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: a fascinating story. I think we What could Donald and
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: I possibly say other than to beg Joel to track
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: down Bill Lawrence and get him to answer. Well, I
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: think I think Bill is going to be honest. He's
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: not gonna lie what he's like.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: I named it. I named Doctor Kim after Kimberly Drummond from.
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: Let Me See the Woman.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Based off the picture. Do you think it could be?
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: Yeah? Sure. By the way Bill wears that outfit, it's
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: one of those. This is the most the husband in
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: this picture is wearing the most Connecticut and Bill has
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: worn this ship. It's like the pink pants you know
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: the people wear on like Martha's vineyard and light blue shirt.
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: Bill has on pants he got on Salmon coming pants
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: with Penny loafers.
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: Yeah. I've seen Bill wear that in the Hamptons. That's
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: some Connecticut ship. Connecticut. So Joel is gonna get Bill
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: to answer that. Thank you for your question.
- 1:02:56Speaker 9: Tune in next week for Bill's answer to this question.
- 1:02:59Speaker 9: Thanks to Mobile. If you're over exploding internet bills, visit
- 1:03:03Speaker 9: T mobile dot com slash Zach and find out how
- 1:03:06Speaker 9: new and existing customers get T mobiles price lock guarantee
- 1:03:09Speaker 9: for home Internet. All right, Donald, for you and for
- 1:03:19Speaker 9: the audience, we will now move to the Hunger Games
- 1:03:22Speaker 9: chapter Jesus Christ be in more successful franchises.
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: You guys got to just hang out on scrubs for
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: years and years and years. I didn't get any I
- 1:03:33Speaker 6: never have ever gotten us.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: That's a great that's a that's a great answer.
- 1:03:38Speaker 6: You guys got to like I want.
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: These things. These things are happening at the same time, audience,
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: the Lego franchise, the Hunger Games franchise, the Past Perfect franchise,
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: all of this at the same time. Are you ever like,
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: do you look in the mirror and go, fucking hell,
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: I'm killing it? Or do you not feel it?
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: No, we just released a little bit and we're not
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: allowed to really talk about any of our movies right now.
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: We're on strike, and I would like a fair deal
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: for all the actors, and and well.
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: I'm being careful. We're not We're not we're not plugging anything.
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: We're just grazing your career.
- 1:04:13Speaker 6: But I just all that to say, like every time
- 1:04:16Speaker 6: there's a new thing, there's a new anxiety and a
- 1:04:19Speaker 6: new worry and a new you know what's gonna happen.
- 1:04:22Speaker 6: I mean, I will say I now, I've I came
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: to a point a while ago, and I'm sure you
- 1:04:28Speaker 6: guys feel this way too, Like you work enough, you
- 1:04:30Speaker 6: build up an audience and a trust with people. With
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: the audience that I do feel like I'm okay, like
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: I'll be I'm gonna be here. I can rest easy
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: that I am actually in Hollywood. This is my job.
- 1:04:45Speaker 6: They're not firing me tomorrow. Well, who knows? Again again,
- 1:04:50Speaker 6: who knows. I don't know. Maybe I tweeted something in
- 1:04:55Speaker 6: twenty eleven that I don't don't forgot about.
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: Don't do that, don't do that. Surely you feel disappointment
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: when thing. You know, as filmmakers we work so I mean,
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: as filmmakers and actors, we work so hard on something
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: and you put everything you have into it and then
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: in a in an opening weekend, in the case of film,
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: it either works or it doesn't. It's really I mean,
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: it's it's that's evolving obviously with streaming and everything. But yeah,
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: in the theatrical experience, if you're still getting a theatrical experience,
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: uh and up and throughout history and up until current day,
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: it's like it doesn't matter. It's all it matters is
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: how did it do that opening weekend? And that and
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: what did the critics say? And so you know that
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: is that is shitty.
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: It's hard not to get caught up in the hype
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: of all of the ship that's coming before it.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: Though.
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: Man, Like, I've done television shows, I've done movies, and
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: they've said to you.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Yo, this ship is tracking, bro, it is tracking. It's tracking.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: Things are happening. Everybody's gonna watch this movie. Everybody's tracking.
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: There's so much tracking, and then the shit comes out
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: and the tracking didn't track the way they right.
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: Right, So it's fat. I hear everything that you guys
- 1:06:09Speaker 6: are saying. I subscribe. I really try to subscribe to
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: a slightly different mentality, which is because I've been burned
- 1:06:17Speaker 6: too many times now and I just don't want the
- 1:06:19Speaker 6: roller coaster one. I really try not to read anything.
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: I don't read the critics. I read it about other
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: people's movies, right, I don't read.
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: When you see yes, yes, and no.
- 1:06:37Speaker 6: I couldn't tell you what any of my movies. I
- 1:06:39Speaker 6: could not right now reliably tell you what any of
- 1:06:42Speaker 6: my movies are sitting at. I'm rotten tomatoes. It is
- 1:06:44Speaker 6: not something that I think, wow. And I also really
- 1:06:48Speaker 6: have come to the conclusion that for all the reasons
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: you guys are saying, like the hype machine and the
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: bubble that you get put in and the tracking, and
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: and by the way, all the people that are invested
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: in it working or not working, because by the way,
- 1:07:01Speaker 6: there's all schadenfreude all over the place too. So which
- 1:07:03Speaker 6: I'm very uninterested in. Is like I've just really trying,
- 1:07:09Speaker 6: I'm really trying to subscribe to this notion that like
- 1:07:11Speaker 6: it's just about the process making the thing with the
- 1:07:15Speaker 6: people that you make it with. And was it were
- 1:07:20Speaker 6: you fully engaged in that process? Did you learn anything?
- 1:07:23Speaker 6: Did you feel like an artist? Did you feel like
- 1:07:26Speaker 6: you know something happened, did you make like moments between people?
- 1:07:30Speaker 6: Were you a good leader, were you a good you know,
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: whatever your job is, did you you know, did you
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: play that as well as you could? Or did you
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: I just try to That's what I focus on because
- 1:07:41Speaker 6: everything else is so out of our fucking control, and
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: I hate that sense of not having control over it,
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: so I just give it up. I've really I control
- 1:07:49Speaker 6: what I can and then everything else I try to
- 1:07:51Speaker 6: look at I.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: Think that's so amazing, and I try to do that,
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: but I get very caught up in the machine of it. All.
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: I feel. It's hard movie. I you know, the critics
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: were split on it. It was hard for me to
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: not read negative things. It was so personal to me,
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: and I was so invested in it, and and I didn't.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: I didn't go down the rabbit hole and read it all.
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: But you do. I did, Unlike you read some of
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: the negative stuff. And I wish, I wish I could be.
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: I aspired to be more like you with that and
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: not give a fuck.
- 1:08:22Speaker 6: I have a question, though, did you read anything where
- 1:08:27Speaker 6: the person totally got it, Like where you read someone
- 1:08:31Speaker 6: you were like, oh, this was absolutely I communicated this
- 1:08:35Speaker 6: person exactly they got the movie.
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: Oh, absolutely, in fact, And.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: The response is that she I'm sorry. Let me just
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: say one thing real quick.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: The responses I've seen from people, people that people that
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: are in the industry, people that are not in the industry,
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: that are that have dealt with some form of addiction.
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: The response that he's gotten or depression or anything. The
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: response that he's gotten from interviews that he's done has
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: been the type of shit where it's like, dude, you
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: got to feel good about what just happened just now.
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: That has to feel good. That has to feel good.
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: Fuck what everybody else is saying, Dude, you're making real connections.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: It's like the fucker that puts out something on Instagram
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: and gets no likes, but then there's like two to
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: four thousand comments on the shit you did.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Make an impact.
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: You've made so many people say oh dude, look or yo,
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: you fucking or whatever it is.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: Man.
- 1:09:27Speaker 6: You know, I was reading something I don't know. One
- 1:09:29Speaker 6: of some big writer was like, I write a novel
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: and I think about one person reading it, you know,
- 1:09:35Speaker 6: I think about one person who like gets moved by
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: something or I remember, frankly, after four yeld version, honestly,
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: I was having kind of like a down moment because
- 1:09:46Speaker 6: not because the movie worked. It was great. I was
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: so happy on one level, and on another level, I
- 1:09:50Speaker 6: was like, oh my god, my dad works in a factory.
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: He works in a general electric factory in Schonnecting, New York,
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: on the third shift, and he is somebody at his
- 1:09:59Speaker 6: work is like I saw your daughter masturbating a bathtub
- 1:10:03Speaker 6: to my father, like, that's I like in my mind.
- 1:10:05Speaker 6: I went to a place where I was like, my
- 1:10:07Speaker 6: father is like, you know, And then I met a
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: woman and her fourteen year old daughter who said to me,
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: my daughter was going through cancer treatment at the children's
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: hospital whenever five months ago and we got to watch
- 1:10:24Speaker 6: four year old version. She loves this movie. It got
- 1:10:29Speaker 6: her through a really hard time. So my point is, like,
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: you know, I now choose. That's what I think about
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: when I think about the four year old virsion. You know,
- 1:10:40Speaker 6: I think about that conversation with that teenage girl who
- 1:10:44Speaker 6: was in cancer, Like, what the fuck. I'm an artist
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: all I'm trying to I don't do it in my closet.
- 1:10:49Speaker 6: I'm doing it to connect with people out in the world.
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: And if you tell me that it happened, then I
- 1:10:55Speaker 6: did it. That was the point of the entire exercise. Now,
- 1:10:59Speaker 6: the studio wants you to connect with as many people
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: as possible who.
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: Buy studios, Like can you do that a billion.
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: Times on a much larger scale?
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: Right, you know, let's talk about that, because that's a
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: great segue to Cocaine Bear, which is just was a
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: fucking phenomenon. I mean, I mean, the movie made so
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: so much fucking money, was such a huge hit, and
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: and people loved it, and it was kind of like
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: it came at a time I think when people wanted
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: something silly and fun, and you know, the comedy at
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: the box office is really tough these days. It just
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: doesn't happen that much anymore. But man, did you really
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: hit the mark with that. And as a director too,
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: I just felt so as someone who cares about you
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: and loves you, I felt so happy for you because
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: I was like, when I saw that you directed, I
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: was like, Oh, that's fun. That's going to do. People
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: are gonna love that'll do well. And then it was
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: like a hundred times what I imagine it was going
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: to do. It just kept going and going and going.
- 1:12:06Speaker 6: You know, yeah, and it's it's been fun to see
- 1:12:09Speaker 6: how many people see it at home and people watch
- 1:12:12Speaker 6: that thing like multiple times, which really delights me. Well,
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: thank you for saying a lot. I read that movie,
- 1:12:20Speaker 6: you know, in the Pandemic, and it was the movie
- 1:12:22Speaker 6: I wanted to see and I wanted to make because
- 1:12:24Speaker 6: I was also like, holy moly, the world is falling
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: down and you know, where where is this all going?
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: And how do I And I really felt a lot
- 1:12:33Speaker 6: of sympathy for the bear and the real story because
- 1:12:36Speaker 6: apparently Middle Story died and so I honestly was like oh,
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: I can make a revenge tale for the cocaine bear
- 1:12:42Speaker 6: like you know. That was really like a big part
- 1:12:44Speaker 6: of it. But more importantly I this it was tone,
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: How do I make something really funny. I've done that before.
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: I've made funny things before. I've made things funny. So
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: I wanted to show I wanted to show something else.
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: I wanted to learn something else. You know that that
- 1:13:03Speaker 6: that was really when I read the script. I loved
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: every character. I wanted to play every character I saw casting.
- 1:13:11Speaker 6: I was like, Okay, I get this movie. I get
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: who all these people are. I get why this is
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: gonna be fun. So many of my favorite directors make
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: movies like this, the multipov you know, the the Cohen
- 1:13:23Speaker 6: Brothers and the and Quentin Tarantino, and you know this idea,
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: Sam Raimi, this idea of like gory blood but it's
- 1:13:32Speaker 6: fun and you're having a great time, and you know
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: everybody's in over the head and everyone's uh a underdog
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: because I don't care how many guns you bring to
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: the party. If the bears on cocaine, you're losing.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: That's a great would have been great. That would have
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: been a great line for the poster.
- 1:13:52Speaker 6: You know, like you did. If you don't know the
- 1:13:55Speaker 6: bears on cocaine, you don't have all the information. You
- 1:14:02Speaker 6: didn't come prepared.
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: So have they already reached out to you to do
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: some sort I'm sure they have, But I mean, is
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: there a way you can make another one?
- 1:14:10Speaker 6: I'm waiting. Everybody wants to do the Shark one. I
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: think that's just Jaws. And if you just revealed that
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: Jaws like ate a little something at the bottom of
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: the ocean, it would just still be Jaws. I can't
- 1:14:24Speaker 6: make it better. You know, we're gonna need a bigger boat.
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: We're gonna need.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: They keep making, keep making this movie too man o.
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: Well, listen, they are going to beg for those of
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: you who don't know Hollywood, they are going to beg
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: Elizabethbanks every day for some other animal to ingest.
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: You can get a lot of pitches on the animals,
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: but no animals. Can you do something different? I want
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: to do something. There was a well, we had a
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: whole other ending to that movie where basically where stash,
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: you know, the kid at the end makes it out
- 1:15:00Speaker 6: with the bag. You know, he's going to New York City,
- 1:15:02Speaker 6: And we had we I always wanted to shoot a
- 1:15:04Speaker 6: tag where he then gets to New York City. But
- 1:15:07Speaker 6: the drug dealers who were looking for his drug, like,
- 1:15:09Speaker 6: Sid's the guys above Sid right, because Sid's there, because
- 1:15:13Speaker 6: they're gonna come and kill his family. He's got to
- 1:15:15Speaker 6: get the drugs. So there's always a level above Sid
- 1:15:18Speaker 6: White in cocaine, Barrett, It's like, who are the who
- 1:15:20Speaker 6: are the Colombians that are coming right right right? And
- 1:15:23Speaker 6: I always imagine Stash in New York City like looking
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: at a map like he's never you know, he has
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: no idea where he's going with the bag in between
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: his likes, and then the Colombians just come out to
- 1:15:35Speaker 6: get him. But the but the bag is actually filled.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: With ratst.
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: Cocaine rat coming soon. You guys heard it here first.
- 1:15:46Speaker 6: Unleash hell in, Unleash Hell in the subways of New
- 1:15:49Speaker 6: York City. Maybe that'll happen someday.
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: What are you singing?
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: We both fell well geek.
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: For big Oh, I didn't get it.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: Sorry, it's at Let's take a break.
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: We'll be right back after these fine words.
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: You're you're such an inspiration. I really mean that to
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: every person who wants to make it in Hollywood. You've
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: just you're so impressive. And I think that you know,
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: when we knew you, you were just not just you
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: were this hilarious actress. I knew you wanted to direct
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: and produce. But I I think I speak for both
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: of us when I say, what you've accomplished is just
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: such an inspiration.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: I saw it coming. I knew this whole time. I
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: saw it coming.
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: And and I just want to lastly say that Donald
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: att are both available for hire.
- 1:16:54Speaker 6: Me too.
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: No, you're too busy. You're you're you're, you're you're you're
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: too busy. Now you're the that's a good question.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Actually, what do you prefer to do? I'll ask all
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: of you.
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: I'll that's the to the direction and the direct right,
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: and uh star.
- 1:17:13Speaker 6: I feel the most well, I I really like I
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: I love directing. But it's the hardest, it's by far
- 1:17:22Speaker 6: the hardest, and it's the longest commitment, and I like
- 1:17:25Speaker 6: to I hate long commitments. So that stuff. I love acting.
- 1:17:33Speaker 6: They bring you coffee, they dress you up, they do
- 1:17:35Speaker 6: your makeup. It's a delight, and like you get to
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: play with your friends. I mean, there's nothing better. I think,
- 1:17:42Speaker 6: so I I still that's if I can do that.
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: That's what I'm gonna keep doing. I love making pressure
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: luck my my my game show. Love that game show
- 1:17:52Speaker 6: because I love giving away other people's money to people
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: who need it. It's real fun. And then you know,
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: and I really enjoy writing when I find something that
- 1:18:05Speaker 6: like clicks. I I think I take the most pride
- 1:18:11Speaker 6: in writing because I'm not naturally good at it. I
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: really have to work hard at it. And when I
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: find something that I feel like works or clicks in
- 1:18:20Speaker 6: or or I can I can be additive. I gets
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: that makes me really excited.
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: For me. Writing is by far the hardest and I
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: dread it. Directing is so stressful, but I think I'm
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: living my my truest self what I'm doing. I just
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: love it. I just like I love cameras, I love actors,
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: and I love and I love choreographing scenes and collaborating
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: and improv and like being a film director is it's
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: like everything I love in one job. It's so but
- 1:18:52Speaker 4: it's also makes me so stressed and takes years off
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: my life. And then like I said, you but that
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: finally put it out and and people either go or
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: they don't, and it's it's just it's it's very, very hard.
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: I do love doing it. Acting to me, once you've
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: done all that is like you can't believe that this
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: is a job, Like you can't believe that you guys
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: are all gonna stress about this shit and I just
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: go back to my trailer and drink coffee. Yeah, like
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: for real, But I don't have to weigh in on
- 1:19:21Speaker 4: the fact that we're over budget and the teamsters are
- 1:19:23Speaker 4: walking off because of some reason, like that's your guys home.
- 1:19:26Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:19:29Speaker 5: But you know it's interesting as an actor when you
- 1:19:32Speaker 5: when I first heard that it was it was amongst
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: you and your director friends and stuff like that, and
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: you guys were talking about putting the puzzle together and
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: stuff and how you know, you know, actors are the
- 1:19:45Speaker 5: we're the worst also because we come in with this
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: fucking ego thinking this is all about me, and I'm
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: the one that's supposed to cater to. You said it yourself.
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: They bring me coffee, they bring me my clothes. So
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: you walk in think this is my life and this
- 1:20:01Speaker 5: is how everybody should feel about it. But really, when
- 1:20:04Speaker 5: you're that person, you are fucking everyone so hard.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Bye.
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: By throwing the monkey wrench in there, dude, and so
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: the one time and it was like it was very
- 1:20:15Speaker 5: humbling and it.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: Was also very eye opening.
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: It was like, you know, Zach was like, you know,
- 1:20:20Speaker 5: the actors are like the least bit of the worry
