- 0:11Hello friends, It's shown here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:16It is the middle of the week. I hope you're doing well.
- 0:19Not quite sure what your day looks like, whether it's a big
- 0:22one, or whether you've got a little bit of time up your
- 0:24sleeve today, or whether you have reached the end of it.
- 0:28Oh, well done, if that's the case.
- 0:30But wherever you are, here we are taking a moment out of our
- 0:34day to well, to hear more about God setting up his argument
- 0:40against Saul and his character and leaving us no doubt that
- 0:45Saul really is not the person that should be leading God's
- 0:48people as king. This is, yeah.
- 0:51Sadly, it's the descent of Saul into more and more treachery,
- 0:56violence and desperation. But that is what happened.
- 1:01That is the story. And so we read it together and
- 1:04we read it not so much to hear about Saul's downfall, but we
- 1:08read it to have that clear disparity shown to us between
- 1:13the king that the people wanted and David the king who God chose
- 1:19because of his character. So that is what we shall attune
- 1:23our lens to, to learn more about God and his preference for
- 1:28character. So join me as we read together.
- 1:33First Samuel, chapter 22. So David left Gath and escaped
- 1:48to The Cave of Adullam. Soon his brothers and all his
- 1:53other relatives joined him there.
- 1:55Then others began coming, men who were in trouble or in debt,
- 1:59or who were just discontented until David was the captain of
- 2:03about 400 men. Later, David went to Mizpah in
- 2:08Moab, where he asked the King, Please allow my father and
- 2:13mother to live here with you until I know what God is going
- 2:17to do for me. So David's parents stayed in
- 2:20Moab with the king during the entire time David was living in
- 2:23his stronghold. One day the prophet Gad told
- 2:28David leave the stronghold and return to the land of Judah.
- 2:33Sir David went to the forest of Hereth.
- 2:35The news of his arrival in Judah soon reached Saul.
- 2:39At the time, the king was sitting beneath the tamarisk
- 2:42tree on the hill at Gibeah, holding his spear and surrounded
- 2:46by his officers. Listen here, you men of Benjamin
- 2:51So shouted to his officers when he heard the news.
- 2:54Has that son of Jesse promised everyone of you fields and
- 2:58vineyards? Has he promised to make you all
- 3:01generals and captains in his army?
- 3:03Is that why you have conspired against me?
- 3:07For not one of you told me when my own son made a solemn pact
- 3:11with the son of Jesse, you're not even sorry for me.
- 3:14Think of it, my own son encouraging him to kill me as he
- 3:20is trying to do this very day. Then Doeg, the Edomite who was
- 3:25standing there with Sauls men, spoke up.
- 3:28When I was at Knob, he said, I saw the son of Jesse talking to
- 3:33the priest Ahimelech, son of a high tib.
- 3:36Ahimelech consulted the Lord for him.
- 3:39Then he gave him food and the sword of Goliath.
- 3:43The Philistine king. Saul immediately sent for
- 3:47Ahimelech and all his family, who served as priests at Knob
- 3:51when they arrived. Saul shouted at him.
- 3:55Listen to me, you son of a high tub.
- 3:58What is it, my king? Abimelech asked.
- 4:01Why have you and the son of Jesse conspired against me?
- 4:05Saul demanded. Why did you give him food and a
- 4:08sword? Why have you consulted God for
- 4:11him? Why have you encouraged him to
- 4:13kill me, as he is trying to do this very day?
- 4:17But Sir Ahimelech replied, he's anyone among all your servants,
- 4:22as faithful as David, your son in law.
- 4:25Why, he's the captain of your bodyguard and a highly honoured
- 4:29member of your household. This was certainly not the first
- 4:32time I'd consulted God for him. May the King not accuse me and
- 4:36my family in this matter, for I knew nothing at all of any plot
- 4:41against you. You will surely die him, Alec,
- 4:45along with your entire family. The king shouted, and he ordered
- 4:49his bodyguards kill these priests of the Lord, for they
- 4:53are allies and conspirators With David.
- 4:56They knew he was running away from me, but they didn't tell
- 4:59me. But Souls men refused to kill
- 5:02the Lord's priests. Then the king said to Doeg you
- 5:06do it. So Doeg the Edomite turned on
- 5:10them and killed them. That day, 85 priests in all,
- 5:15still wearing their priestly garments.
- 5:18Then he went to Knob, the town of the priests, and killed the
- 5:23priests, families, men and women, children and babies, and
- 5:28all the cattle, donkeys, sheep and goats.
- 5:32Only Abiathar, one of the sons of Ahimelech, escaped and fled
- 5:36to David when he told David that Saul had killed the priests of
- 5:40the Lord. David exclaimed.
- 5:43I knew it when I saw during the Edomite there that day, I knew
- 5:48he was sure to tell Saul. Now I have caused the death of
- 5:53all your father's family. Stay here with me and don't be
- 5:58afraid. I will protect you with my own
- 6:01life. For the same person wants to
- 6:04kill us both. Lord, as we hear of the total
- 6:18moral corruption of this man's soul, we see parallels.
- 6:24Maybe not to the same degree of genocide, but we see in our own
- 6:29heart where we rebel against you, where we choose our own
- 6:34way, where we create a mess of our own making.
- 6:41But incredibly, we know that Your Grace is big enough to
- 6:46cover over and deal with any of our shortfalls.
- 6:52So, Jesus, any part of us or part of our story that would
- 6:56make us run from you and shame, I just claim that your grace is
- 7:02enough. I respond to your promise that
- 7:08you will separate us from our sin, as the East is from the
- 7:13West, No matter how great that sin may be, that your sacrifice
- 7:18is greater than it, and your death takes it all away to
- 7:24present us blameless before the throne.
- 7:29All that is incredible, and I pray that you would fill us with
- 7:34your spirit so that we would be bold enough and faithful enough
- 7:38to be able to step out from behind whatever it is, whatever
- 7:42shame, whatever hurts, whatever memory would hold us back from
- 7:46you. That we would step into your
- 7:48light and be your people. OHP Thank you for that gift of
- 7:54grace and freedom that you give us.
- 7:58And we thank you. We praise you.
- 8:01We worship you and we pray all these things in your name.
- 8:05Jesus. Ah man.
