- 0:00In this lessons episode, we dive deep into the world of social media strategy,
- 0:04uncovering how to dominate a single platform, leverage organic reach,
- 0:08and create impactful content that resonates with your audience.
- 0:10From growth hacks to algorithm insights,
- 0:12you'll learn the secrets behind building a thriving personal brand
- 0:16and driving explosive growth.
- 0:18When you approach, you know, we're going down the rabbit hole of the product that you're offering people,
- 0:33and I love unpacking this because I'm a marketer too.
- 0:36And to a fault, though, because I like to figure out things myself first,
- 0:41and then, but I'm not even trying to sell it to somebody.
- 0:43I'm just trying to figure it out myself.
- 0:44So I love to understand how you approach channels,
- 0:49how you approach unpacking algorithms,
- 0:52all the growth marketer hacks that you do.
- 0:55And when people hear hacks, it's not that you're doing something that is not allowed.
- 1:01It's that you're using the channel to the best of its ability.
- 1:04And most people don't know how to do that.
- 1:06I mean, there's so many levels to this.
- 1:07You're talking about CEOs that don't know how to build a personal brand
- 1:10that are so far removed from the day-to-day activities of actual marketing.
- 1:15All the way down to growth marketers that are running and operating in a social media agency
- 1:19that are trying to figure out LinkedIn and don't get it.
- 1:21But then it seems like some people every single post just hits.
- 1:24Yeah.
- 1:24All these different nuances and the span of knowledge that you have in bridging that gap
- 1:30between the tactical implementation because you've done it before
- 1:33and the needs and the wants of the actual customer serving,
- 1:35that's actually what's made it successful for you.
- 1:37And the $5 million run rate in two years is fucking insane.
- 1:40But as a marketer, when you look at different channels,
- 1:44you go into a new channel.
- 1:45What are the things that you think about?
- 1:47What are the things that you look for?
- 1:48Can you even describe something that isn't common knowledge
- 1:52on a channel that you do really, really well on
- 1:54that people should start to understand and look at social this way?
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:57So number one, you want to make sure you're picking the right platform
- 2:01and you don't want to spread yourself to them.
- 2:02So one of the reasons why I really want in this whole game of podcasting
- 2:06is because when I started,
- 2:07I didn't focus on Instagram, YouTube, all these platforms.
- 2:10I said, you know what?
- 2:11I think my target audience are young professionals.
- 2:14And I think there's a huge gap.
- 2:16There was only like Lewis House,
- 2:17was sort of doing his thing on LinkedIn.
- 2:20And I just came in and I focused on LinkedIn
- 2:22and I became the number one podcaster,
- 2:24bigger than Lewis House, bigger than Jay Shetty,
- 2:26bigger than Jordan Harbinger on LinkedIn in terms of my engagement.
- 2:29And I got leverage from that.
- 2:31And that really set everything off.
- 2:33It set up my social agency.
- 2:35It enabled me to trade my audiences with podcast apps
- 2:38and then blow up my podcast later on.
- 2:40And so LinkedIn really kicked everything off for me
- 2:42because I just focused on that
- 2:44and realized my target audience was there and there was a gap.
- 2:46I could stand out in the feed because of my topic
- 2:49and because I'm a young woman, I stood out
- 2:51and I could be different
- 2:52and you want to be different on social media.
- 2:54That's how you win, you want to stop the scroll.
- 2:56So that's number one, figure out where your target audiences,
- 2:59where you have the most opportunity,
- 3:00where there's organic reach, right?
- 3:03And focus on one platform until you gain leverage
- 3:06and then move on to the next platform
- 3:07unless you have a huge team and lots of money.
- 3:09That's a different story.
- 3:10But if you're just starting out
- 3:11and you don't have that many resources,
- 3:13just focus on one platform
- 3:15where your target audience is hanging out in mass.
- 3:17Can I ask you one question on that?
- 3:18Because that runs counter to the GaryVee style strategy,
- 3:23which is everywhere.
- 3:24Which is podcast, 50 pieces of derivative content
- 3:29across every single social platform known to human beings.
- 3:32So that's great if you've got a lot of money in a big team, right?
- 3:35If you hire me, yeah, we can have omnipresence
- 3:38and I can crush it for you
- 3:39because I've already done that, been there before.
- 3:42But if you're starting from scratch,
- 3:43you need to learn the platform, the ins and outs.
- 3:46You need to be familiar with all the features.
- 3:48You need to understand the engagement hacks
- 3:50on that specific platform.
- 3:51You need to build a community on that platform
- 3:53and spend time engaging with your fans.
- 3:55And that doesn't happen by accident
- 3:58and spreading yourself to thin.
- 3:59I see this all the time.
- 4:00You get nowhere.
- 4:02And then you don't have any leverage to then make things bigger
- 4:06because you've got more power.
- 4:07You've got an audience to trade.
- 4:09That's a huge thing to have an audience to trade
- 4:11when you don't have a lot of money, right?
- 4:13And so figure out what platform you want to work on.
- 4:17Then you want to make sure that you understand,
- 4:19you experiment every day, you post every day.
- 4:21There's really two parts of a social media strategy
- 4:23that's important.
- 4:24Number one is like your content marketing.
- 4:26You don't want to push, I'm not a big paid ads person.
- 4:29I never got into it.
- 4:31Eventually I may have to do stuff with paid ads
- 4:34and I do paid ads for podcasts and stuff like that.
- 4:36But in terms of social media,
- 4:37I feel like organic is definitely the way to go.
- 4:40And so you need a really strong content marketing
- 4:43and then you also need to understand the algorithm.
- 4:47And those two things are really what can make somebody
- 4:50become an influencer online.
- 4:52And so in terms of the content marketing,
- 4:53you want to position yourself as an old friend
- 4:56to your community.
- 4:57And that means you need to understand your values.
- 4:59You need to understand your personality type.
- 5:01You need to clearly understand the audience
- 5:03you're trying to target.
- 5:04You want to mirror your personality to your audience.
- 5:08So for example, if I'm trying to attract young millennial men
- 5:11who are the people who listen to my podcasts,
- 5:13I want to make sure that I talk about topics
- 5:14they're interested in, that I sound cool and relatable
- 5:18and that I'm able to actually mirror the audience
- 5:20that I'm trying to attract.
- 5:21So what does that mean?
- 5:22I don't do makeup tutorials.
- 5:23I don't like do fashion blog.
- 5:25Yes, the bit of gas you bring on are certain types.
- 5:28I talk about person exactly.
- 5:30And so I'm always doing things.
- 5:31Not that make me happy, but that attract my target audience.
- 5:35Right?
- 5:36It's not about you necessarily.
- 5:38And you want to think about the impact that you want to make.
- 5:40And so like having a really clear voice identity
- 5:43is really important.
- 5:44A lot of people get stuck on visual identity
- 5:46on social media where they care about a logo,
- 5:48they care about branding.
- 5:49But promotional salesy things, especially on a platform
- 5:52like LinkedIn, actually do terrible because they don't stand out.
- 5:55And they're not authentic and they're not relatable.
- 5:57And so it's really getting clear on your voice identity.
- 6:00Being comfortable with showing your face
- 6:02is super important on social media.
- 6:04A lot of people don't like to show their face
- 6:06and that's one of the things that can like immediately
- 6:07just change things if you just get your face out there.
- 6:11And in terms of the algorithm, it's like,
- 6:13I do things like read engineering documentation, right?
- 6:16So I'm reading LinkedIn engineering documentation.
- 6:19I'm super nerdy.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:22Good.
- 6:22That's like, I thought I was nerdy.
- 6:24That's like taking it to another level.
- 6:25That good for you.
- 6:26That you need to do that shit to kill it because it's tough.
- 6:29Exactly.
- 6:30Yeah.
- 6:30No, I mean, that's absolutely wild.
- 6:32Now, you keep bringing up LinkedIn again and again and again
- 6:36out of all the social platforms.
- 6:37Like if you think about the common advice that people give,
- 6:40well, now you follow where the company is trying to promote.
- 6:43So the Reels and the Shorts and the Snapchat Spotlights.
- 6:46And that's where you focus your energy
- 6:48with short form video clips.
- 6:49Yeah.
- 6:50No one really speaks about LinkedIn.
- 6:51I'm obviously very bullish on LinkedIn.
- 6:53I mean, that's actually where I'm not,
- 6:56it sounds like as granular a marketer as you are,
- 7:00but I still understood that like LinkedIn
- 7:02is a content-efficient platform.
- 7:04Yeah.
- 7:05So when you put stuff on there, you get organic reach.
- 7:07I'm a big fan of organic, as somebody you did not have money
- 7:10starting at a podcast, then you have to find a way to tap
- 7:13into an audience.
- 7:14So I get LinkedIn and also their content is very similar.
- 7:17It's business content, so it hits.
- 7:19But I mean, I never put this much thought into it.
- 7:20So it's like, sometimes I'm just like a good accident.
- 7:24But I mean, you are very purposeful about all the shit you do.
- 7:26Yeah, very purposeful.
- 7:28Which is great.
- 7:28And that's probably why you have a $5 million agency.
- 7:31And I don't have one.
- 7:32That's a lot.
- 7:33But how do you actually, or why is LinkedIn
- 7:36so important in your content strategy?
- 7:38Why do you keep bringing it up?
- 7:39Like, what is the thing about LinkedIn?
- 7:40The differentiates it and put in layman's terms
- 7:43over focusing on YouTube or focusing on Instagram
- 7:46or focusing on Twitter or TikTok?
- 7:48Well, number one, like I mentioned before,
- 7:50the leverage of me being able to say,
- 7:52I'm the number one podcaster on LinkedIn.
- 7:54And I have a business podcast.
- 7:56So all the business brands love to sponsor me.
- 7:59And we didn't talk about it,
- 8:00but I have a podcast network where I grow and monetize shows.
- 8:03And a lot of my deals are 360 deals.
- 8:05So I'm one of the first podcasters
- 8:07that have monetized LinkedIn lives.
- 8:09I sell my podcast as a sign-all cast across my podcast,
- 8:12my YouTube and my LinkedIn.
- 8:14I'm the first one to do that, right?
- 8:16And so I've been able to like triple my impressions
- 8:18just because I use LinkedIn live
- 8:19as another podcast monetization tool, essentially.
- 8:24And so 360 deals are really important to me.
- 8:27Speaking engagements come from LinkedIn primarily.
- 8:29A lot of my clients are authors.
- 8:32Speaking engagements come from LinkedIn,
- 8:34not from Instagram, right?
- 8:35So really important for authors
- 8:37and the types of clients that I run.
- 8:39Something that I want to talk about,
- 8:40because you mentioned it before,
- 8:41but we didn't really get to talk about,
- 8:43is just basic rules of growing on social media.
- 8:48And I can take it from like broad cross channel
- 8:50to then we can focus on LinkedIn.
- 8:51Yeah, sure.
- 8:52So first, every social media platform,
- 8:55no matter what it is,
- 8:56their goal is to keep users on that platform, right?
- 9:00And anytime you post on social media,
- 9:02you need to remember that if you want to be rewarded
- 9:05on this platform, you need to keep users engaged
- 9:08and you need to keep them on the platform
- 9:10as long as possible.
- 9:11So if you do anything that brings users off the platform
- 9:15that boars them where people skim over your stuff,
- 9:17you're never going to win.
- 9:18You want to stop the scroll,
- 9:19you want people to spend time on your posts
- 9:21to take viral actions on your posts.
- 9:23And that means that you really need to know
- 9:26the content marketing that's going to resonate
- 9:28with your target audience,
- 9:29but then also have to like hack things
- 9:32to make sure that people do spend time on your posts
- 9:34and don't leave the platform.
- 9:36That's how you get rewarded no matter what.
- 9:38The other thing is that in this world,
- 9:40everything is mobile.
- 9:42You want to take up as much real estate
- 9:44as possible on the feed.
- 9:46It's super important.
- 9:47People miss this.
- 9:47So on LinkedIn, for example,
- 9:49people will put up horizontal images
- 9:51or text posts with no graphic.
- 9:53That's the worst thing you can do
- 9:55because the average person on LinkedIn
- 9:56is scrolling through nine posts, right?
- 9:58And if they just skim over your posts,
- 10:00you're actually going to lose points for the algorithm
- 10:02because you didn't have dwell time.
- 10:04Nobody actually stopped and looked at your stuff.
- 10:07And so the bigger the image, the better.
- 10:09So on LinkedIn, that's like a four by five aspect ratio
- 10:12for a graphic.
- 10:13And if you have a photo with a person on it,
- 10:15people are spending more time looking at the person
- 10:17rather than like a promotional graphic
- 10:19or something like that.
- 10:20And so big photos right now work the best on LinkedIn.
- 10:23Videos don't work well.
- 10:24The only thing that works well with video on LinkedIn
- 10:26is like LinkedIn Lives.
- 10:27That's why I do a lot of LinkedIn Lives.
- 10:29And so people try to take the same strategies
- 10:31like Instagram Reels and do it on LinkedIn.
- 10:33It doesn't work.
- 10:34It's a whole different platform
- 10:36with a different set of rules
- 10:37that are prioritizing certain features.
- 10:39It's not like Instagram.
- 10:40So that's a big problem.
- 10:42I see people trying to replicate,
- 10:43you know, what they do on one platform
- 10:45when it doesn't work that way.
- 10:47No, I was going to say one more thing.
- 10:48I guess on that point, I don't want to fire.
- 10:51No, no, you're good.
- 10:52You're good.
- 10:53I love it.
- 10:54It's an easy interview.
- 10:55But when you see people that are just copying the strategy,
- 10:59I just want to highlight something.
- 11:01I think what you're seeing is you're seeing people
- 11:03that follow Gary Vee or some other social media influencer.
- 11:08And they see that Gary has a very sophisticated strategy.
- 11:12But you do see that he'll just take a random video
- 11:15that he posted on Instagram and he'll post it on LinkedIn.
- 11:17And he'll get thousands of likes and...
- 11:20But you cannot equate what he has,
- 11:22which is critical mass of an audience
- 11:24versus what you're doing, which is no audience.
- 11:26Yeah.
- 11:27And I think that's the issue.
- 11:28People replicate that.
- 11:28And they're like, well, if he's doing it,
- 11:29I should do the exact same thing.
- 11:31You're playing at a different level.
- 11:33And you have to play at the level that you're at
- 11:36to eventually get to where he is.
- 11:38Yeah, and by the way,
- 11:39so somebody like Gary has well over a million followers
- 11:42on LinkedIn and his engagements the same as me
- 11:45and I have 200,000 followers.
- 11:46So he actually has a very poor engagement rate
- 11:49because like you said, he's just replicating
- 11:51and he's just got this huge audience.
- 11:52So it does well.
- 11:54But he could be doing so much better
- 11:56if he was leaning into the features
- 11:57that LinkedIn is actually promoting.
- 12:00The other thing is skimmable content, right?
- 12:02People don't like to read.
- 12:04And these algorithms want to keep users on the platform.
- 12:07So a platform like LinkedIn
- 12:08is actually going to deprioritize your post
- 12:11if you've got big chunky paragraphs
- 12:12and you're making people work
- 12:13because they know people are going to skim over them.
- 12:16And so big chunky paragraphs, you get deprioritized.
- 12:19Linking in the caption, taking users to another website,
- 12:22deprioritized.
- 12:24The other thing that's really unique about LinkedIn
- 12:26is that the last stage of the algorithm
- 12:28is actually human editors.
- 12:30This is way different than any other platform.
- 12:32And so an influence are like me and all my clients.
- 12:35I know how to manipulate the algorithm so much
- 12:37that like we're always going viral.
- 12:39So my worst performing post, 1500 likes, you know,
- 12:43and then ranging from like 1500 to like 5,000 likes.
- 12:47But then sometimes I'll get 100,000 like posts,
- 12:4960,000 like posts, million, eight million views.
- 12:52Tell me like nobody's getting these types of results
- 12:55on LinkedIn.
- 12:56And the reason why is because my content is actually
- 12:58aligning to the LinkedIn editorial agenda
- 13:01because the LinkedIn is actually scanning
- 13:03the most popular posts and anything that aligns
- 13:06to careers, hiring, graduation, point in time holidays,
- 13:10Women's Day Month, Black History Month,
- 13:12whatever is on their editorial agenda,
- 13:14they're going to pour gasoline on it.
- 13:16And they're going to stop anything that's salesy,
- 13:18anything that's promotional, anything that's promoting me,
- 13:20my LinkedIn masterclass or whatever it is.
- 13:23And they're actually going to pour gasoline
- 13:26on the stuff that aligns to their agenda.
- 13:27So whenever I'm thinking about client strategy
- 13:29in terms of content marketing on LinkedIn,
- 13:31I'm like, what is the intersection of your niche
- 13:33and careers?
- 13:34Because that's how we're going to go massively viral.
- 13:36What's your ratio of promotional to editorial guideline
- 13:41focused content?
- 13:43On LinkedIn, sales happen in the DMs.
- 13:45Always.
- 13:46Always.
- 13:47LinkedIn is going to do, from the first step
- 13:49of the algorithm, LinkedIn is deprioritizing sales
- 13:51and promotional stuff.
- 13:52If you link out, deprioritized.
- 13:54If you have salesy keywords in your post, deprioritized,
- 13:58LinkedIn is in the business of making LinkedIn money
- 14:00and keeping users engaged and entertained on the platform.
- 14:03And they want to reward content creators who do that.
- 14:06And by the way, only 6% of people who are on LinkedIn
- 14:09are actually content creators.
- 14:11So there's a huge opportunity for everybody
- 14:13to be that dominant person in their niche,
- 14:15just like I was the number one podcaster
- 14:17or the number one podcaster on LinkedIn.
