- 0:00Hey, y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:04on the pod. Before I go right into reading
- 0:07the scripture that we're going to be in today, I do want to say
- 0:11that there are some passages in scripture that feel maybe more
- 0:16gentle and straightforward. This is one that kind of feels
- 0:21like a mic drop and you're like, OK, what just happened?
- 0:25And I believe it can serve as a holy interruption.
- 0:29This is one of those. And Matthew chapter 21, verses
- 0:3312 through 17 is where we're going to be today.
- 0:37It is about Jesus clearing the temple.
- 0:40And it shows that Jesus is so intentional about worship.
- 0:46He is not passive. He's not indifferent to it.
- 0:49He steps into this temple, as you'll see, and confronts
- 0:53anything that is distorting its purpose.
- 0:56So the longer that I sat with this passage, because it did
- 1:00take me some extra time to really understand it more fully,
- 1:05it's very deep, the more I realized that it's not just
- 1:09about what happened in the physical building.
- 1:13It's about what can quietly happen within us and in our
- 1:17hearts if drift goes unchecked. So with that being said, we're
- 1:22going to dive right in to verse 12.
- 1:26Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were
- 1:29buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the
- 1:32money changers and the benches of those selling doves.
- 1:36It is written, He said to them, My house will be called a House
- 1:41of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers.
- 1:45The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed
- 1:48them. But when the chief priests and
- 1:51the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did, and the
- 1:55children shouting in the temple courts hosanna to the Son of
- 1:58David, they were indignant. Do you hear what these children
- 2:03are saying? They asked him.
- 2:05Yes, replied Jesus, have you never read from the lips of
- 2:10children and infants? You, Lord, have called forth
- 2:13your praise. And he left them and went out of
- 2:16the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.
- 2:20OK, per Yuge, I'm going to give you all the context and
- 2:23background. This is the second time, as
- 2:27we've seen the title, that Jesus is clearing out the temple.
- 2:30And yet again, He is fulfilling prophecy upon prophecy with such
- 2:35accuracy and precision. These are words spoken long
- 2:39before through Isaiah and Jeremiah and many Psalms.
- 2:44And here they are unfolding exactly as promised.
- 2:48So here's what's happening. I'm going to lay it out for
- 2:50y'all try to paint the picture. We have merchants.
- 2:54They are completely taking over the temple courts and these
- 2:58courts can be referred to as the court of the Gentiles AKA non
- 3:02Jews. And this is the only place that
- 3:05they could come worship. It was being crowded out by all
- 3:08of the buying and selling that was happening.
- 3:11We also have sacrificial animals that these merchants have jacked
- 3:15up the prices on and are just completely being not honest.
- 3:22They are not selling with integrity.
- 3:25And we even see that the temple currency that was accepted was
- 3:30currency that the travelers, these gentiles coming from all
- 3:34over, they were unfamiliar with these exchange rates.
- 3:37So they were probably being very exploited.
- 3:41What was meant to help people worship God?
- 3:44This temple, it had become a system that was driven by
- 3:48convenience, profit, money and self-interest.
- 3:53And Jesus names it plainly that worship had been distracted,
- 3:57this sacred space, it was being misused.
- 4:01Now, I don't think that this originally began as rebellion.
- 4:06I think it began as a drift. There were small compromises,
- 4:10practical decisions, and subtle shifts that turned this temple
- 4:15into what it was not meant to be.
- 4:18Because over time, people lost sight of why they were coming
- 4:23and who they were coming for. Worship quietly shifted from God
- 4:28to self. And that, I believe, is the
- 4:31warning for us. So I'm going to take it from two
- 4:34different approaches. We see the temple here as a
- 4:38place, as a building. So for us, the temple is the
- 4:42church building. I also believe that there's a
- 4:45time and place for structure and planning.
- 4:48I'm a very structured person, so it's easier for me to see it
- 4:51from this point of view. But Jesus reminds us that
- 4:55gathering as believers must remain centered on prayer and
- 5:00reverence, humility. So I want to go into a few
- 5:04distractions today that might interfere with us entering our
- 5:10church building. Maybe packed schedules.
- 5:14We might be traveling, and we could be exhausted from that
- 5:18competing priorities and commitments.
- 5:20Maybe even attending church simply to feel good about
- 5:24ourselves, reassured or productive.
- 5:27And if we're not careful, these can slowly crowd out genuine
- 5:32worship. Now, I know sometimes we cannot
- 5:34control our travel schedules and prior commitments, things like
- 5:39that. But it's really important to be
- 5:41aware of these distractions. And so now from the other angle,
- 5:47we know from Scripture that as believers we are the temple of
- 5:52the Holy Spirit where he resides.
- 5:55So that means that this passage is not only about the physical
- 5:58building, it's now about our hearts and some distractions for
- 6:04that aspect, they might look different.
- 6:07We might have justified idols ambition that is disguised as
- 6:11calling, spiritual apathy, self-centered motivation and
- 6:17ultimately y'all. This is a call to wake up.
- 6:21Like I said earlier, it is a holy interruption.
- 6:25We cannot just go through the motions, we cannot just worship
- 6:29out of habit. We have to pay attention to what
- 6:32is shaping our desires. And from a personal perspective,
- 6:37I've had seasons where I've filled my calendar with a lot,
- 6:42where I was the yes man and on paper it was every quote UN
- 6:47quote good Christian thing. But I had to come to terms with
- 6:52my schedule and I was worshiping the busyness and the
- 6:57productivity instead of the Lord's presence.
- 7:01So good things, they can still become misplaced things if we're
- 7:06not super careful. So now I want to bring y'all to
- 7:10a Psalm, Psalm 1611. This is one that y'all may have
- 7:14heard before. It says in your presence there's
- 7:17fullness of joy. So I want to ask y'all, as I'm
- 7:22reflecting on them myself, a few questions.
- 7:25Number one, is there anything watering that joy down, the joy
- 7:30that's found in the Lord's presence?
- 7:33Is there anything stealing your surrender?
- 7:37Is there anything competing for affection that's meant for God?
- 7:42Because the bottom line is if it interferes with intimacy with
- 7:46Jesus, it must be addressed. So another thing that I want to
- 7:52harp on is the church is for everyone.
- 7:55Y'all, after Jesus clears the temple, look who comes in next.
- 8:00We see the blind and the lame and all of the children.
- 8:04We see in Mark 2 verse 17, Jesus says He did not come for the
- 8:09healthy, He came for the sick. So that means that the church is
- 8:13for the outcast. It's for the overlooked and the
- 8:16weary. And we need to remember with
- 8:19humility, y'all, we were once that too.
- 8:23Every single one of us who is now a believer was lost and now
- 8:28we're found. But we were all in need of
- 8:30grace. So there is no room for pride or
- 8:34feeling superior to the person beside us, or acting better than
- 8:40we are not here to protect our holiness like it's some private
- 8:44club and other people cannot enter it.
- 8:47We're here to recruit people into the Kingdom of heaven.
- 8:50That's why we exist. So that means asking God for
- 8:55eyes to notice. Maybe you have a lonely Co
- 8:58worker who you can love on, or a struggling friend who's really
- 9:02going through a hard season who you can pray over and send
- 9:05encouragement to. Or possibly the person that no
- 9:08one else sees. Sometimes it just takes 5
- 9:11minutes to remind someone that they are known, that they're
- 9:15valued and deeply loved by their Creator and Father in heaven.
- 9:20And I believe God can do more than more with your obedience
- 9:24than we even realize. So as we consider these things,
- 9:30just reflect on these questions. I'm going to read over you all
- 9:33before I move into prayer. Where might I be drifting from
- 9:38God centered worship? Is there anything Jesus needs to
- 9:42remove from the temple of my heart?
- 9:46Who is God inviting me to notice and love today and this week?
- 9:52So, Father God, we're here before you and we just ask that
- 9:58you would keep us from drifting. Would you protect and guard our
- 10:03hearts from idols that compete with you and for your attention?
- 10:09Mold and shape our worship so that it flows from a place of
- 10:13gratitude? Not routine, not habits.
- 10:18Would you keep our motives pure in our hearts, humble and rooted
- 10:23in You? Jesus, teach us to live as
- 10:27people who would reflect Your holiness and who extend Your
- 10:31grace unto others. Lord, we want lives that
- 10:35directly point to You. It's not about us, it's all
- 10:39about you. God, we pray this all in your
- 10:42name. Amen.
- 10:43OK, well hope that y'all can learn something from this
- 10:48episode today and praying that y'all have a great rest of your
- 10:52day and week. I'll see y'all in the next one.
