- 0:27Hey, everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:29coop. So today we are going to be
- 0:32talking about living in response or reaction.
- 0:36So fundamentally, human beings are wired to react because as
- 0:43I've said before, and as you've probably heard from other
- 0:45people, because it's very true, we are hardwired to find what's
- 0:48wrong. And that's that's just an
- 0:51organic mechanism in us that helps us stay alive as a, as a,
- 0:55as a species. That's what happened.
- 0:57We just basically we're wired for it.
- 0:59And if you see what's wrong, technically you can really react
- 1:03quickly and jump into action and if you see what's wrong, you're
- 1:07actually empowered because you can navigate around it, so to
- 1:11speak. The problem is our world now has
- 1:14changed so significantly that we are not about to be killed by
- 1:17pterodactyls every moment. And being in reaction is
- 1:21stressful and it causes that fight or flight syndrome to go
- 1:25off in us and it keeps our adrenal glands on high alert all
- 1:31the time. And so we constantly have
- 1:33chemicals flowing through us that are not necessarily great
- 1:38for our everyday lives. Now.
- 1:41Now, sure, there are times when. You have to have that reaction
- 1:45quick, You know, you've got to go through something like I'll
- 1:48use a chicken coop example because I'll we're here.
- 1:50And you know, I love to use my chickens as an example because
- 1:53it's so weird how there's so many great parables out here.
- 1:56But if I hear a hawk, instantly, instantaneously something inside
- 2:02of me goes off where I have to go OKI need to go check now,
- 2:05even though that's the big boy as you can hear him in the
- 2:07background. That is his job, to go out and
- 2:09protect them against the Hawks, which he does do an excellent
- 2:12job at. That doesn't mean we don't have
- 2:14loss, and it doesn't mean some things don't happen when the
- 2:18Hawks are around because the big girls do the best they can
- 2:21protecting the little ones, and he does the best they can.
- 2:23But every so often it goes off. But my brain is.
- 2:26Is now wired. Every time I hear that hawk
- 2:29screech, I will whatever I'm doing meander quickly over here
- 2:34so that I can put myself out there because the hawk won't
- 2:37come down if there's a human around.
- 2:39So and I don't even have to think about it.
- 2:41It's just a complete and quick reaction.
- 2:44Now response. Response is thoughtful, so when
- 2:48you take a pause, you collect your thoughts.
- 2:51Is it necessary for me to run? Is it necessary now?
- 2:55If they're all inside the coop, it's not necessary for me to
- 2:57run, but my brain still has that immediate reaction.
- 3:01Does that make sense? So you can feel it even though
- 3:04there's no threat? There's a reaction, but there's
- 3:07no threat. And we tend to be very reactive
- 3:12in our world right now. As human beings, we don't tend
- 3:16to be thoughtful and respond. So some we'll hear something on
- 3:20the news, something will go off and we don't pause and we don't
- 3:24pull ourselves back to actually think about all the different
- 3:28scenarios that could be going on in this.
- 3:30So let's say you hear something in the news and and it doesn't
- 3:34go the way you wanted it to go. You have strong beliefs about
- 3:38it. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 3:40But having your body go instantaneously into reaction,
- 3:45it's just not healthy for you. Sure, you can do it for a short
- 3:49period of time, but the trick is to realize you can't just stay
- 3:52in reaction state because it's just absolutely psychologically
- 3:56unhealthy. And it's physically unhealthy
- 3:58because the two are intertwined. You can't separate the two.
- 4:02So if you are constantly in a state of that fight, fight,
- 4:06fight and reacting in an absolutely toxic way for your
- 4:11own health, it will go that way and all that.
- 4:15Acid so to so to speak, that you pour into your body emotionally
- 4:19will have effects on you as we know.
- 4:21Stress, you have to use that one word.
- 4:24Doctors love to use that one word.
- 4:26Stress related illness. Well, stress related illness all
- 4:31comes really down to one thing. It's an emotional illness.
- 4:34Now the word stress has different meanings for us, as we
- 4:37each interpret it differently because we interpret everything
- 4:39differently. But stress is that emotional
- 4:42reaction and us not getting rid of it quick enough and it stays
- 4:45in reaction mode and therefore everything we are reacting to.
- 4:49So you become a hair trigger and things that will normally not
- 4:54drive anybody crazy all of a sudden, drive every, every bit
- 4:57of you crazy because you've been in that hair trigger mode and
- 5:01all of a sudden you can't get out of it.
- 5:03So I'm going to challenge you guys to start thinking about am
- 5:07I responding where I can pause? And thoughtfully think through
- 5:11all aspects of what I'm hearing, interpreting, experiencing.
- 5:15Or am I just in a state of pure reaction where I'm in that fight
- 5:21mode and I'm not willing to see anything else?
- 5:24Because I will tell you this, my friends, the most important
- 5:28distinction about our talk today is you do have a choice to at
- 5:34least just totally take a respite from it.
- 5:38Pull back. And say, how do I want to
- 5:41respond? What are the different ways I
- 5:44can view this before I respond? And that's actually the power of
- 5:48having the the ability to think through things.
- 5:51That's our ability as a human being to think this is.
- 5:54A huge gift when you can actually sit and discern all the
- 5:58different aspects of things. So today I'm going to ask you
- 6:01guys to think about the difference between your
- 6:03responses and your reactions, because they're powerful and I
- 6:07will see you all tomorrow. Have a great day.
- 6:10Bye.
