- 0:00Making sand think there's a story behind that.
- 0:05This is your daily message from Chad #1185 to upgrade your
- 0:09mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:14yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:16Atlas and Conan Whitaker. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:20You're scared. The advance of technology is
- 0:22about to end your job, your economy, maybe your species.
- 0:27But upgraded thinking remembers. We've stood on this beach
- 0:29before. Here's the story.
- 0:33Every computer chip in the world starts out as sand.
- 0:36Quartz melted down at almost 3000°, purified, sliced into
- 0:40wafers thinner than paper, etched with billions of tiny
- 0:44switches. That's it.
- 0:46That's the whole miracle underneath every headline about
- 0:48the future sand arranged cleverly.
- 0:52There's a lot of doom trolling about AI these days.
- 0:56The term artificial intelligence should give you some relief.
- 1:00It's artificial. We've let the power go to our
- 1:03heads over the idea that we figure out how to make sand
- 1:06think. But you'd be wise to not build
- 1:09your hopes or your fears on sand.
- 1:14It has a way of shifting under you.
- 1:16We've done this before. In 1975, a major business
- 1:20magazine ran a confident story called The Office of the Future.
- 1:24Computers, it promised, would empty the file cabinets.
- 1:28No more paper. Fewer workers needed to move it
- 1:31around. Some people were thrilled.
- 1:33Some people were terrified. Everybody agreed it was coming.
- 1:3850 years later. Now we print more paper than we
- 1:42ever did. The paperless office never
- 1:45showed up. What showed up instead was
- 1:47something nobody forecast. More e-mail, more meetings, more
- 1:51decks, more noise. The technology was real.
- 1:55It changed how we work. But the prophecy, the specific
- 1:58one everyone was so sure of, wasn't real at all.
- 2:03And that's the pattern. Every leap forward built on sand
- 2:07arrives wrapped in a leap of certainty about what it will do
- 2:10to us. The certainty is almost always
- 2:13wrong in both directions. The utopia doesn't show up.
- 2:16The apocalypse doesn't either. What shows up as something
- 2:20stranger and more ordinary than anybody predicted.
- 2:23And we adjust the way we always have.
- 2:26So here's what I'd tell you today while the headlines shout
- 2:30that the sand is waking up and coming for your future.
- 2:33A prediction is not a foundation.
- 2:36It shifts. It always has.
- 2:38That's what sand does. The better story to tell
- 2:41yourself is I don't build my life on a prediction, I build it
- 2:46on the next right thing I do today.
- 2:49Tell me a story of a prediction that never came true to from

- 2:55them whatever they're predicting, the next right thing
