- 1:23a pack show Joe Pack with the doh is going to join us in just
- 1:27a couple of minutes. But Rick Cavender said, you know you see people
- 1:30in the hallway and just grab them in here pretty much, right? Okay?
- 1:34Yeah, Rick, Yeah, good morning, big event, big popular
- 1:38event coming up Saturday. Yeah. Yeah, annual Phone with the Dome eighthan
- 1:42already reltors. Yeah, we're back for the eighth year. It's back on
- 1:46the Canoe Boulevard right in front of the state capital between Greenbrier and California.
- 1:51And you know, this event is unlike any other craft beer festival in the
- 1:53state in that it is a fundraiser for a nonprofit, our nonprofit, Charleston
- 1:57Urban Works, And it's a ticket the event, is that right? Yes?
- 2:00So what's the deal on? If you go to foam CWV dot com
- 2:04you can get your tickets. Now. We are encouraging people to go ahead
- 2:07and get their tickets. They are limited this year and so and if you
- 2:09buy, if you buy now, you won't have to pay five dollars more
- 2:13at the door or excuse me, at the gate there's no door, but
- 2:16yeah, So fifty five dollars is for the VIP early entry ticket that gets
- 2:21you an hour an hour more of drinking if you will, starting at three
- 2:23o'clock, not four o'clock. And also you get access to VIP beers.
- 2:30If you go to foam CWV dot com, the beer list is there and
- 2:34the VIP beers are marked, especially with a little icon to show you which
- 2:38ones are available just to those folks wearing that gold VIP wristband. The general
- 2:43admission ticket is forty five dollars and that gets you access starting at four o'clock.
- 2:46The event runs until seven. Where are your vendors from? You mentioned?
- 2:50It's all over all over and we've we've always focused on Appalachian beers,
- 2:54West Virginia beers, but it's not just that. There are bears from all
- 2:58over the country that are being featured here all and mostly Kraft beers, but
- 3:01there certainly are some domestics for those folks who love a good bud light are
- 3:05a good course light mic culture that'll be on tap as well, but the
- 3:07majority are those craft beers for those folks who are there, and we get
- 3:10so many people from out of state. We've had people come from sixteen different
- 3:15states to attend this event in the past over the course of the last eight
- 3:17years, which is great because people come and they'll they'll kayak for the weekend
- 3:22or right Whitewater Raft when they come to Charleston because they know this event's coming
- 3:24up and they'll stay here, they'll go out to eat afterward, they'll spend
- 3:28money here in the capital city. It's just a really great sort of bookend
- 3:32if you will, for events season to start here in Charleston. What do
- 3:36you use the money for for urban works? Great question. So, as
- 3:39you know, we we just rebranded we used to the Charleston Main Streets.
- 3:43Our mission is fully focused on urban economic and community development in the urban neighborhood
- 3:49business district, so that's mostly the East End and the West Side. We
- 3:51do partner with the Downtown Charleston Association on some things sometimes, but west mainly
- 3:55focus on the East End and the west Side. So that's program implementation.
- 3:59As far as our facade grant program for small businesses, our Business Advancement Initiatives,
- 4:04Shop local initiatives. This money goes toward having the funds to implement these
- 4:10programs. Right. So you know, we are a small nonprofit organization.
- 4:14We like to think we do really good work being as small as we are.
- 4:16In this event not only showcases our work, but certainly the small business
- 4:20community and the best Really frankly, the Capital City has offered events, outdoor
- 4:26events, whether it's important. Man, weather looks really good for Saturday.
- 4:29I'm so happy it's looking right now. Partly sunny in seventy seven is the
- 4:32high. I'm hoping that. I'm hoping that it is a big nerve wracking
- 4:36experience whenever you're planning an event this large. We did have it. We
- 4:40did have it one year where fom with the known was it rained all day.
- 4:44I've never seen so many people in Poncho's drinking beer in my life.
- 4:46I mean, people still came out. It was a successful event. So
- 4:49I think rain or shine people come to this event. But it is looking
- 4:53pretty good. So okay, the details once again, Rick Foam CWV dot
- 4:57com. That's where you can buy tickets and you can also find more information
- 5:00not on the phone at the dome Facebook page. Okay, good to see
- 5:02you. Thanks for flexibility, sir, of course, yeah, thanks for
- 5:05having me. All right, good retrial Cavin. We're going to go right
- 5:09to Joe Pack with the d O H. Joe Pack is uh, he's
- 5:14the top ops engineer. Is that Is that fair Joe to call you that?
- 5:18Fair enough? Really? My my challenge is for the operations of our
- 5:25organization, specifically with the maintenance of our roadways yea uh, and and how
- 5:30that relates to our our everyday travelers. And so yeah, I'm one of
- 5:35one of our top engineers that we have several all right, and Joe Pack's
- 5:39with us jeff Jenkins filling in for Dave Allen on five at E LAB.
- 5:43I wanted to talk to Joe because, you know, being in the news
- 5:46business, I'm an inquisitive guy. You guys get out information, I mean.
- 5:50And I've been watching this Jefferson road project like right from the beginning,
- 5:55because I'm like thousands of other people, I drive Jefferson right right, and
- 6:00so I've watched it and just give me a status updates. It's really starting
- 6:04to come along absolutely, So what we're seeing out there is a is a
- 6:11culmination of the vision that was put together years ago with the Roaster Prosperity Program,
- 6:15which is addressing projects such as Jefferson Road that had had been planned and
- 6:23thought about for years, but the ability to construct it was never there.
- 6:27And what we've been able to do is to really facilitate that. And and
- 6:30as I always mentioned, you know, we we're rehab in a house while
- 6:34people live in it. And what's happening there on Jefferson Road is people can
- 6:40drive the road as you do, and you see our work every day and
- 6:44you see the improvements. And sometimes it starts off slow, it starts off
- 6:46messy, and just seems like a lot of dirt and disruption. But at
- 6:50this point we are we are seeing that that proverbial light at the end of
- 6:56the tunnel on that project, and and it's one of several of our larger
- 7:00projects that fit under that program that we're seeing to come to a completion soon.
- 7:05I want to drive down just a little bit Joe On on the Jefferson
- 7:09Road. So if so say that I'm a quarter ge to take a left
- 7:13and I'm coming down Jefferson Road, I can start to see, and you're
- 7:16the engineer, so you can tell me. I can kind of start to
- 7:19see now to the right, what the new road's going to look like,
- 7:24right, correct, And that's the you know, there's been a lot of
- 7:29developments and early on it was probably tough to see what the final vision.
- 7:32But we are on the last steps of that project, and it will be
- 7:38transitioning traffic onto from existing surfaces to new surfaces so we can do other expansion
- 7:46and that's going to happen over the over the next round ten to twelve months
- 7:49before it's complete. But yeah, everyone should be able to look around while
- 7:55they're driving in the area to see, you know, the fruits of a
- 7:58lot of hard work being done and and be able to see the final vision
- 8:01of how the whole road way and the intersections will will function. Joe Pick's
- 8:07with us from the Duho. I would imagine what's going to happen there.
- 8:09And again, you guys are the engineers. Is that what we see taking
- 8:15place on the right hand side, if you're heading down the hill, the
- 8:16traffic will eventually be shifted there. Then they'll work on the left hand side.
- 8:20Is that that's kind of a crude way to describe it. That's probably
- 8:22what's going to happen, right, correct, The northbound lanes will be paved
- 8:26this summer, and then we will transition all traffic onto that road, onto
- 8:33that surface so that we can do other parts of the project. And when
- 8:37the new bridge is completed, will be moving on to that so that the
- 8:39roundabout construction can begin, which will be the final step of the process to
- 8:45make it fully functional for how it was designed. Okay, so let's talk
- 8:48about the new bridge that goes over to Trace Fork. So, so how
- 8:52do you do that intersection? What would that be the finality? What would
- 8:54that intersection look like in the end, So it will be a signalized intersection
- 9:03as it is today, and when it's completed, it will some of the
- 9:07limitations we have placed now will be removed. Uh. And that's simply because
- 9:11you know, when we're transitioning from from the new bridge onto six onto Route
- 9:16six O one on the Jefferson Road, the construction has to be continued on
- 9:20the hillside. When that's complete, that that whole intersection will be more functional
- 9:26and it'll be a more fluid movement of traffic through the area. So it's
- 9:30going to so they'll they'll in the end, when it's all done, there'll
- 9:33be a light there right in what a left turn left turn lane if you're
- 9:37coming down, if you're going north, coming down the hill which is actually
- 9:39going north. Uh, so there'll be a left hand turn lane to get
- 9:43onto the bridge that way, correct, Yeah, and then you'll be able
- 9:46to turn right obviously if you're coming up the hill. And uh, you
- 9:50know, just from people I talk to, I mean they love that bridge
- 9:52already to get over to chase for it. Yeah, yeah, I mean
- 9:58that projects itself was already such a relief of traffic congestion that it's only a
- 10:05small piece of the piepo for when this is all completed, for people to
- 10:09move through that area, it will be it will be so much a more
- 10:13fluid, more more more of a situation where you don't have to just come
- 10:20to constant stops due to traffic congestion. And and we we've done this in
- 10:24stages so that people could utilize the roadways, for instance on or else r
- 10:30HL Boulevard, so that they could that could be utilized while Jefferson Road is
- 10:35completed, and and again this is it's all part of a stage process.
- 10:39So that it cannot the contractor can do their work while we maintain traffic on
- 10:43the roadways. How will so if I understand, the roundabout is going to
- 10:48be the last piece, that'll be the last thing constructed. So it's a
- 10:52stage events. So the new the the overpass bridge that goes over uh can
- 10:58All Turnpike and goes over the our road tracks and goes over get kind of
- 11:03the creek there area. Uh So that'll be done. So well, will
- 11:07you be able to maintain traffic on Conall Turnpike while you're doing the roundabout or
- 11:11will that be blocked? And everybody? How how all that work logistically?
- 11:15Well, there will there will be no closures. Okay, we will maintain
- 11:18traffic through the entire time and and some of it will be will seem like
- 11:24I said earlier, you know, we'll build a new section, move traffic
- 11:26over to it while we do other work. So it's it's it's very carefully
- 11:31staged and laid out so that we are disruptions to the normal traffic flow is
- 11:35minimized. However, we can eliminate it simply because we're doing a significant amount
- 11:41of work and and we will do everything we can to notify the public when
- 11:48those transitions are coming up, and so they can they can expect that,
- 11:52and it's not just a shock that one morning when you come to work that
- 11:54you're doing something that you're not accustomed to. Is the roundabout going to be
- 11:58right un kind of underneath the new bridge or is it little? Is it
- 12:03a little more down toward the toward the railroad crossing? Where's kind of the
- 12:05roundabout? The specifics on that I don't have, okay to explain and you
- 12:13and unfortunately you probably know that area way more than I do something because you
- 12:18utilize them more than But one thing that will happen is that roundabout will will
- 12:22allow for those that are accustomed to using a roundabout. It changes any any
- 12:31existing traffic conditions to such a more manageable flow, and it reduces accidents once
- 12:37everyone becomes a customer used to driving it, because it just allows traffic to
- 12:43never have to come to a stop. And we've utilized these all throughout the
- 12:46state and we really expect this to be a significant game changer for that area.
- 12:52M HM and Joe Pack's with us with the deal, H and Joe
- 12:54and I think people might be surprised too. How much traffic. I mean
- 12:58a lot of that track I think coming down Jefferson Road, which is coming
- 13:01north toward I sixty four toward Macorcor Avenue, A lot of the try to
- 13:05go straight through there, so they'll be up on the bridge, right,
- 13:09I mean so that I mean that's where that's where the major part of the
- 13:11traffic will be. Correct and differentiating those travel paths for where people are intended
- 13:18to go is really the core of our engineering section. It's figuring out where
- 13:24the traffic patterns are, where the drivers are wanting to go, and then
- 13:28facilitating that so that someone doesn't have to have a difficult time to get from
- 13:33point A to point B. Okay, and always the question for the duhs,
- 13:37when is this going to be done? I think you mentioned it a
- 13:41couple of minutes ago, right. A lot of the changes we're going to
- 13:43be seeing are going to be having late summer and early fall, and then
- 13:46the final completion of the project. We have it scheduled and expected to be
- 13:52done in late spring early summer of twenty twenty five, so we are literally
- 13:56seeing the end of the program and the fire well touches being put on this
- 14:01project. It to be fully functional for the public to utilize and see where
- 14:05their tax dollars went. Okay, let's go west a little bit down to
- 14:09the Donald Leg Bridge, the bridge project that's the Nitro project. This goes
- 14:15into Putnam County. Wow, what a what a major project that's been.
- 14:18And the most significant thing has happened in the last few weeks that you've been
- 14:22able to open two new lanes of the second new bridge, the second big
- 14:26bridge that you built over the Canal River. Two new lanes of that have
- 14:28opened up, correct, And it is it is really an exciting time for
- 14:33us. A lot of blood, sweat and tears has been poured into these
- 14:37projects, especially this one. It is it is one of the largest projects
- 14:41we had as far as as far as the Roads to Prosperity program went.
- 14:45Uh. It is going to improve a major congestion area that exists just right
- 14:52here in the in the Charleston to Huntington area. And that project is even
- 14:58further along than the Differson Road project. And and people are really going to
- 15:03be seeing the final final steps being performed out there so that we can actually,
- 15:07you know, excitedly be able to get out of there so that the
- 15:11public can utilize and and be able to enjoy all of the improvements that we've
- 15:16been able to make on the road. Joe, no one's ever been excited
- 15:18about the the eastbound merge. I mean that's no one's ever been excited about
- 15:24that. But what's if I'm right on this, Once the both bridges are
- 15:28fully operating like you've intended, you know, when everything's done, that'll be
- 15:33a long entrance tramp right the correct to come on and so you'll be able
- 15:37to you'll be able to merge because it'll be a really long entrance trap off
- 15:41one whole lane going eastbound. Yes, actually we yes that that issue that
- 15:46that we we all dealt with for the last couple of years will be will
- 15:50be removed and it will be a merge on and off to allow the traffic
- 15:56to to be able to move smoother and and also to just to improve the
- 16:00overall safety of the area driving in on that route. It's a little bit
- 16:04like maybe somewhat like I mean when you get off at Dunbar, right,
- 16:07I mean, I mean you get in that far right lane and you can
- 16:11be in that exit lane for I don't know how far that is, but
- 16:12that's kind of what it's going to be like. Correct And again, I
- 16:17mean we ask everyone to when this happened, to still drive cautiously and to
- 16:22allow everyone to adjust to the new traffic pattern. But it will be a
- 16:26major improvement over what's been there over the last two years. During construction,
- 16:30a lot of people have thought about the big bridges, which that's the huge
- 16:33part. But you've had to do because people, yeah, sometimes we drive
- 16:37away. Oh that was a bridge, Yeah, I mean the bridge that
- 16:38goes over Route twenty five. I mean the couple two bridges that go over
- 16:41Route track. You had to build two new bridges there, right, We
- 16:45built new bridges. We rehabbed a bridge, the one over West Rginia twenty
- 16:49five. We rehabbed it, upgraded and interchange I mean, and actually did
- 16:56something that people may not have noticed is that we actually did what we refer
- 16:59to is rebalization of a concrete sub base and repaving, which will make the
- 17:04asphalt more sustainable. And that reflected cracking that we get when we have pavement
- 17:11over an asphalt, I mean over a concrete sub base. I'm sorry that
- 17:15that'll be remedied. And so what it will do was that it'll make it
- 17:18a smoother road surface over a longer amount of time. And yes, this
- 17:22project has been there was so many other issues with this besides just a bridge
- 17:27construction or a bridge rehab. There was so many other steps involved that at
- 17:33times it felt like that you we would be driving in that in that traffic
- 17:37control forever. But that project is even further along than the Jefferson Road and
- 17:42we are, I'll just jump ahead on one of your questions. We're anticipating
- 17:45that project to be completed late fall this year, and that's extremely exciting for
- 17:52us simply to be able to then monitor the flow of the traffic and see
- 17:57if all the improvements that we've designed than planned actually are paying off. And
- 18:03that gets rid of that last, in my mind, one of the last
- 18:06remaining bottlenecks on sixty four. Correct. We really, you know, the
- 18:11beauty of this whole of the whole Roads Prosperity program is we were able to
- 18:15address issues that, like I mentioned earlier, that have been prevalent and been
- 18:21a problem for all of us for years or even decades. And this will
- 18:26be one of the most significant impacts, especially for the daily drivers, right
- 18:30and just to be able to see that coming in in the morning or leaving
- 18:33in the afternoon is usually when we see the biggest congestions in that area.
- 18:37That we expect that to be a much less congested area, a much smoother
- 18:42transition for the public, and it'll actually make their life a little bit easier
- 18:47and coming in and going from work. All right, two more questions.
- 18:49I'm going to let you go. So this has been this has been the
- 18:53road segment. Now Joe Pack with the h's with us. The new exxit
- 18:59that you're building just west of what just west of Hurricane, the new exit
- 19:03there, and that's that's kind of coming along too. Oh absolutely, yeah.
- 19:07I mean we are in the midst of our of our construction season.
- 19:11That's why it's always, you know, so exciting coming out of winter because
- 19:15all these all these projects either resume or they start, and and our job
- 19:22is to be, as I always like to say, a welcome nuisance on
- 19:25the roadway because when we're there, we're there to make the roads better.
- 19:27We're made we're there to make the commutes better. And and and it's just
- 19:32one of of hundreds or thousands of projects we have going on in the state.
- 19:36And we're very excited about all of them. Yeah, and then the
- 19:37Huntington project, which I know unfortunately is behind just I mean, it's a
- 19:41huge project too, and I know you guys want to get that done,
- 19:45but it's I think I think it's it's kind of behind schedule, right,
- 19:48it is, and and you know, our our the issue that we have,
- 19:52and it's it's it's a little bit of always a challenge, is that
- 19:56there's always things that come up on a project. You know, even even
- 20:00the greatest design can have an issue during the project that we have to address.
- 20:04And that project ended up with a few that put us that extended our
- 20:08schedule out farther than what we had anticipated or happy with. However, we
- 20:12are we are pushing as hard as we can to get that completed because again,
- 20:18that allows us to move on to other projects and other parts of the
- 20:19area and the state that can make us, you know, a serious impact
- 20:25on how we all utilize our roadways. Okay, Joe, thank you.
- 20:30I just hit you with a bunch of stuff. So I appreciate, appreciate
- 20:33you answering the questions and we look forward to these things being done too.
- 20:37All right, Joe, appreciate it, Thanks for the time. Thank you
- 20:40all right, Joe Pick one of the top operations guy there at the State
- 20:47Division of Highways and thanks to the Highways folks who hooked him up with us
- 20:51this morning. Jeff Jenkins here in for Dave Allen. Jeff Patty is my
- 20:53producer. We took a little long segment there because I just wanted to hit

- 23:41five eighty Live on five eight wcajas the voice of Charleston. Jeff Jenkins with
- 23:47you filling in for Dave Allen today in the Parmar Store studios. And thanks
- 23:52to all of our sponsors and Dave. We'll be back on Friday. Understand
- 23:56that's that's the word. So Coop is in tomorrow, but I wanted to
- 24:00bring these folks in from CMC Vendelia Health to talk about a in the CMC
- 24:06Foundation, to talk about a great event that happens here every year and that
- 24:12is Run for Your Life. And I've participated in that. I will.
- 24:18I can't run five miles right now. I ran a couple of miles this
- 24:21morning, but I guess you could come and run and walk, right,
- 24:22you can do the combo. But I'm going to introduce our guests and go
- 24:26to let them introduce themselves as we get started this morning and start on my
- 24:30left, Good morning, everybody. I am to Marek Gilmore. I work
- 24:33for the CMC Foundation. I'm a development officer and I'm the race director for
- 24:37the Run for Your Life. Okay. And to my right, yeah,
- 24:40good morning, thanks for having us. This is Brian Cummings. I'm the
- 24:41president of the CMC Foundation, and we're thrilled to be with you this morning.
- 24:45Yeah, and it is. It really is a great event. I'll
- 24:48let you start to may about kind of the history of this and what it's
- 24:52all about and and why we do it. Well, the reason why we
- 24:56do it is for colorrectal cancer awareness and prevention. Are. I'm going to
- 25:03let Brian talk about the history, but I'll tell you why the whys.
- 25:06West Virginia is becoming really increasingly in the amount of corectal cancer awareness or cancers
- 25:14in the state. So West Virginia ranks second for the highest rate of corectal
- 25:18cancer per one hundred thousand people, and they are estimating that in twenty twenty
- 25:26four that corectal cancer will be the leading cause of cancer deaths in men under
- 25:30the age of fifty and the second among women of the same age. So
- 25:34that's our why. And so it's important for everybody to get screened. So
- 25:40this raises awareness about screening. Brian, it raises and it's fundraiser, but
- 25:44it raises, you know, one of the big things that raises awareness about
- 25:47it. Yes, it does. And a little bit of the history.
- 25:49This is the twentieth year of the race itself. It's about the fourteenth year
- 25:55that the CMC Foundation has headed under management. A group of local community members
- 25:59started this race in honor of one of their friends who passed away, Jody
- 26:03Jibden. And obviously, as we've lost individuals to the disease over the years,
- 26:07we've tried to recognize others that have been engaged with us Chris Stademan most
- 26:11recently, someone that a lot of our listeners know about. Both of those
- 26:15gentlemen. But we've been doing this to raise that awareness level as to marriage
- 26:21is touched on. This is a disease that's impacting too many people in our
- 26:23community. And so what the CMC Foundation does with the funds raised is allocate
- 26:27those back to do awareness events and then help cover screening costs for individuals that
- 26:33are being treated at the CMC Cancer Center. And yeah, I mean it's
- 26:37a great effort to get to kind of top of mind because we just lose
- 26:41too many people right to marab because of this, absolutely, and it is
- 26:45the most treatable cancer that's out there once you know about it. And so
- 26:48prevention is getting screened is the most important thing, Okay, And so people
- 26:55are signing up I'm assuming, right, Brian going to the website different thing
- 27:00and signing up and getting ready to go. We are just a little over
- 27:03a week away from the start line, as we like to say, with
- 27:06all puns intended. But we've got a great race lined up this year.
- 27:11We have a group of committee members that have been out solictening in the community
- 27:15and helping get this event planned and wanted to recognize those real quick. Okay,
- 27:19absolutely, Ted Brady, Orlando, Craighead, Emma Gill, doctor Lucas
- 27:25Hamrick, Brad mclahaney, Robbie Queen, John Cybold, Josh Sword, Michael
- 27:30Sword, Peggy White and Chip Burling and all of these guys under Tamara's guidance
- 27:34have been out raising the money and getting individuals signed up. And so we
- 27:40will all meet on the start line on June fifteenth at eight am. We're
- 27:44a kickoff event to be a partner with Festival as well, so we've got
- 27:47a full day, a fun plan for those individuals that are able to come
- 27:49out and join us. Yeah, and a few people on those lists.
- 27:52I know Josh, he's a survivor. He is. Yes, you too,
- 27:56Sean, Yeah, yeah, exactly so. Yes. And the race
- 28:00itself is it's unique because it's five miles correct, right, And it's unique
- 28:07because it goes up from the spring Hill Cemetery. That's the tough part of
- 28:11it. Yeah, It's not an easy route for those of us that aren't
- 28:15runners. So luckily you're right. It starts at head d Riverfront Park,
- 28:18downtown Crean's up Court Street, back through Smith and then up through spring Hill
- 28:23Cemetery. And one of the things I always try and tell people about the
- 28:26route is that if you've never been in spring Hill Cemetery, the view of
- 28:29the city is just astounding there. So for those people that can do it,
- 28:33we encourage them to. For those people that want to come out and
- 28:36join us for a walk, we have a two point five mile walk that's
- 28:38a part of the route as well. Yeah, and that's a great option.
- 28:41It is it turns around so you're with the runners, although the runners
- 28:45start first, but you're the walkers go afterwards, so we don't have any
- 28:48accidents. And then the walkers turn around there at the base of the hill
- 28:52when you go up Cemetery, so at Farnsworth is where they turn around.
- 28:55So it's mostly flat. So it's a good walk, a nice walk through
- 28:59downtown. Yeah, and I've been able to run a couple of times.
- 29:02And uh, and what I remember about the run is is you're going up
- 29:07to spring Hill Cemetery and I don't know if this person does this every year.
- 29:11There's a drum there's a drummer there, you know, and he's we
- 29:14have four of them. Yeah, okay, Yeah, so that's that it
- 29:18either motivates you or you're just trying to shut it out as one one or
- 29:22the other. It's it's supposed to be a motivation. Yes, yes,
- 29:26they'll get you up that final leg of the hill. Yes, yes,
- 29:29exactly. And so how how are sign ups going? Is it look pretty
- 29:33good? We're right on target where we were last year. I think we
- 29:36had over five hundred people registered last year and over just close to the full
- 29:41five hundred that registered participated. You always have some that don't show up on
- 29:45the day of, you know, schedules get in the way, so some
- 29:48people don't show up. But we had over five hundred last year registered.
- 29:52So it's a it's a great event. It's a great family event. If
- 29:55you're a walker, you got kids, bring him, If you've got a
- 29:57dog, bring them, if you've got a stroller, springham. We're happy
- 30:00to have everybody that can participate to participate. Yeah, and the swag's pretty
- 30:04good too. Yeah. We've got fantastic draft hit shirts that people are able
- 30:08to select or cotton after their preference when they sign up. Tamara's lined up
- 30:12some really fun incentives as well. This year. We're going to have Dusty
- 30:18from the Dirty Birds out with us on the course and then do you want
- 30:22to mention that after? Yeah, so kind of paying homage to when we
- 30:26originally started, when they had the bruise downtown the barbecue, so when that
- 30:33was started and then that kind of fizzled out, so we kind of brought
- 30:36it back with our partner with the four Points and Recovery, so they will
- 30:41be providing after the race. Now you have to register, but you get
- 30:45two adult beverages and two pork sliders. That Recovery and four Points is providing
- 30:52for our participants this year, so it'll be great. It was very well
- 30:56received last year, so much so that we were like, you can not
- 31:00do it this year. Yeah, And I kind I like where the race
- 31:03starts and ends it ends because there's just great seating right there. It had
- 31:07that, ye, so now you come across the finish line and there you
- 31:11need a break, you know, right after that, and that's a great
- 31:14little venue to be able to do that. It is, and we've had
- 31:17perfect weather the last two years, so I'm praying that that also happens again
- 31:19this year. Yeah, exactly exactly. And again I mean I know.
- 31:25It just you work to get top of mind, you know, and this
- 31:30is one of those kind of top of mind events. Yeah, I need
- 31:32to get tested, I need to do these things. Yeah, it really
- 31:33is. And part of the extension of the event really those T shirts that
- 31:37we give all of our runners have the correctal cancer awareness language on it,
- 31:42so when you see those in the community, we're continuing to touch folks long
- 31:45after the event has completed. But it's it is top of mind for us.
- 31:49It's top of mind for the same C Foundation and all the patients that
- 31:52we're caring for at our cancer center. We want to do everything we can
- 31:56to eradicate this as quickly as possible. Yeah, and Brian, I'll give
- 32:00you an opportunity here too to I know, the foundations into a lot of
- 32:04things. Give me some other things. You guys are work. Yeah.
- 32:06So we've got a full summer coming up. Two weeks after the finish at
- 32:09the Run for Your Life, we're having a summer lou al and that is
- 32:14at the Clay Center. It took place of our traditional black tie affair that
- 32:17we held for almost thirty years. When COVID hit we had to take a
- 32:22break and then we pivoted to get our friends and donors and philanthropy partners back
- 32:25together. So it's a summer Louol super casual shorts, Hawaiian print t shirts
- 32:31are encouraged, but it's held outside of the Clay Center and so all of
- 32:35those funds that we raised there helped support the clinical and social services at CMC
- 32:39Women and Children's Hospital. We also have a golf classic coming up in August
- 32:44that also benefits the services at CMC Women and Children's Hospital, a little more
- 32:47tailored for our neonatal intensive care unit for our nick you babies. And then
- 32:52we finish up our year with our fourth major event, which is a can
- 32:55climb at Kennall State Forest. It's a five k trail run two point five
- 33:00mile trail hike to support the CMC Children's Advocacy Center, and this is where
- 33:06patients, unfortunately in our community, roughly about five hundred last year children were
- 33:09screened for physical or sexual abuse, and so the funds that we raise from
- 33:14that event cover those costs for those family so that they don't have to pay
- 33:16for the care that those kids receive, both clinical and psychological to get them
- 33:22through those hardships. I know the CMC Foundation has just really a great history,
- 33:28I mean, and it's just a key role because we think, Okay,
- 33:30we go to the hospital, but there's so many other things that need
- 33:35that support. Correct that happened. Yeah, the full wrap around support is
- 33:38what our focus is typically. So we know that our patients can get in
- 33:42the door to receive the clinical care that they need, but some of those
- 33:45things that aren't covered by reimbursement costs from insurance providers or Medicare or Medicaid.
- 33:51The CMC Foundation tries to step in and fill a lot of those gaps and
- 33:54it's important for this community. It's one of the needs that we see for
- 33:58our patients that struck financially. We're able to provide funding to those areas within
- 34:04the hospital that can really envelop them in the care that they need. All
- 34:07right, great, thanks for that. And so tomorrow what's people, I
- 34:10mean, still got time right to sign up for that, to mention the
- 34:15morning of gets a little hectic, So to avoid all of that, we
- 34:19are doing a pre race pickup and you can also register and that's on the
- 34:22day before, that's the fourteenth, and we do it from three to seven
- 34:27at the Cancer Center on the breast Cancer on the Breast Center side. So
- 34:30we'll have table set up. People can come up and pick their shirts and
- 34:34they can register also that day, So then it kind of takes the hectic
- 34:38gits of you know, the day of, it just gets crazy out there.
- 34:42We'll have a DJ on the morning of and then like you mentioned,
- 34:45we'll have Dusty, So there's a lot of things going on the morning of,
- 34:47So if you can do it the day before, it might be a
- 34:50little easier for people. Right, And I've used that pickup too, and
- 34:52that's it. That's a great option. It's very convenient. And then of
- 34:55course you can always register online. You can visit our websit right CAMC Foundation
- 35:00dot org. There's a link there directly to the Run for Your Life registration
- 35:04page, and that certainly expedites the purpose of getting there and registering early.
- 35:09Would have all that information ready and your packet ready to go that Friday and
- 35:13or Saturday morning. And you know, we know, if you've run any
- 35:15races before, you know you've got the really serious people that are really good,
- 35:20and you know, sometimes you get they're passing you up before you get
- 35:23that's usually me. You know, I'm not in the lead. I'm like
- 35:27getting past, they're already run Spring Hill Mountain and are coming back down when
- 35:30I'm going up. You know, what's always entertaining for me is that the
- 35:32guys that and women that get there early and they run before they run.
- 35:37You know, they're like they're out there running three miles before they even started.
- 35:38Yeah, exactly exactly. I think last year the twins that won it,
- 35:44it was like twenty some minutes. Yeah, it was a pretty hot
- 35:49pace. Wow, that is a high pace. There were two twins and
- 35:51they were battling each other the whole way and one beat the other by seconds
- 35:54across the finish line. Wow. Wow. But I wanted to say,
- 35:58you know, it's really for all comers. If you want to walk,
- 36:00you can walk, or if you want a combo, run and run a
- 36:01couple of miles, walk up to Spring Hills Cemetery, you know, and
- 36:06walk that and then come back down. I mean, that's what's kind of
- 36:08cool about it, because that really is that. I mean, you get
- 36:10up on top there, and it's really a lot of people say, well,
- 36:15I've never been up here. You know, you got you got a
- 36:16great look. Not only is the view of downtown. Great, but now
- 36:20the cemetery is an arboretum, so you have the history of some of the
- 36:24gravestones that are up there, but now the tree markings, it's just a
- 36:28really interesting place to be. Yeah, okay, well yeah, a week
- 36:31from Saturday. Yes, okay, so folks don't have time. Thanks for
- 36:36coming in. I appreciate that. Thanks for having us, thank you for
- 36:37allowing uspretending, yeah, to raise the awareness a little more. Yeah,
- 36:40it's a great event. It really is a great event. You guys do
- 36:43a great job. I appreciate that. Thank you, Thank you. Okay,
- 36:45and we're going to take a break and can Brad Micaelheeney's coming up by
- 36:49the way, all right, Brad, who's with this event too? All
- 36:52right, back in a moment on five eighty Live on five eighty w CCHS.

- 39:44on five eighty Live on five ad w CCHS the Voice of Charleston. Things
- 39:49in the News Today. One of our lead stories at wv Metro News dot
- 39:54com, a WHS network dot com. Just a local mother, Charleston mother.
- 40:00Her son was tragically murdered last month Memorial Day weekend and she is reaching
- 40:05out because police have had a tough time getting people to cooperate in connection with
- 40:12Dimitri Coleman's murder. So we were able to make contact with his mother yesterday
- 40:19and she just basically making a personal plea that folks would come forward because she
- 40:25believes that they know him. There were a lot of people gathered there.
- 40:28There was over on Railroad Avenue, which is over kind of tucked in there
- 40:30on the west side. Early morning hours of Saturday, May twenty fifth and
- 40:37there, from what we understand what police say, there were a lot of
- 40:39people there and Dmitri got into some kind of discussion or altercation with a man
- 40:45who, according to witnesses and police reports, grabbed him and shot him in
- 40:52the back of the head and then shot him three more times. His mother,
- 40:57who we've interviewed and interviewed her yesterday and did a story with her that
- 41:00you can read at WV metro news dot com or at WHS network dot com,
- 41:06just again making a personal plea that you know, she just can't believe
- 41:10that that this person, this man who shot and killed her son, that
- 41:14no one knows and that she says, someone needs She believes someone knows him,
- 41:21and someone knows where he is. And so she's calling on the public,
- 41:25those who are there or those who might know about it, to have
- 41:29courage and to uh and to step forward. UH. And so that's what
- 41:34that's what she's calling for. And you can read more about that again at
- 41:38our website, WV Metronews dot com. Brad mc wheney's coming up. We're
- 41:43going to have a couple of things we want to talk to Brad about.
- 41:45Happy he's got Metro News talk Line coming up, and Hoppy, if you
- 41:50heard some discussion yesterday, there some discussion about some vote totals that just kind
- 41:55of raised some eyebrows in Mingo County and a state Senate race, and we
- 42:00understand it's not only in the state center race, but maybe a couple of
- 42:02other races, and so Hoppy is scheduled to talk more about that today and
- 42:10we'll see if there are any formal complaints that are made in connection with that.
- 42:15I mean, election results have already been certified, but there's just some
- 42:20questions the numbers just kind of just don't look right, and so there's some
- 42:23discussion on talk line yesterday about that. I think we can expect some more
- 42:29discussion coming up today on that issue. Hoppy's got a couple of guests on
- 42:35and he'll be talking about that. Brad Michaelhndy up next here on five any
- 42:38WCCHS the Voice of Charleston, and there's going to be a news conference that
- 42:46is scheduled for tomorrow by the Governor's office. That'll happen at two o'clock tomorrow,
- 42:52and it's on this Boon County case that we've done a lot of reporting
- 42:55on other media members have done a lot of reporting on and it's, you
- 43:02know, the death of Kennedy Miller, the fourteen year old girl, her
- 43:07April death, and then how the state has responded to her case over the
- 43:10last couple of years, and the Justice Administration has been has been looking into
- 43:15that and now they've scheduled a news conference for tomorrow. Brad Michaelhaney, Metric
- 43:20News state wide correspondent, joins me now to talk about that, and Brad,
- 43:27yeah, so we'll hear from the administration tomorrow. And this is kind
- 43:30of a rarity. I mean, this hasn't happened too much. It's an
- 43:32in person news conference, which has been a rarity, and we'll kind of
- 43:37see what they've been able to find out on how the state has handled the
- 43:42Kennedy Miller case leading up to her death and since then. Yes, and
- 43:47it is quite a representation of the Justice Administration participating in this press conference on
- 43:55Thursday. However, I don't the governor himself was not listed. He is
- 44:01bringing in the experts and it looks like that panel will be led by the
- 44:06Chief of Staff Brian Abraham, a former prosecutor at the county level, but
- 44:10also representatives of the State Police, of the Department of Human Services, and
- 44:16others, And the entire question is Kennedy Miller, fourteen year old of Boone
- 44:22County, was removed from the public school system. She was homeschooled for a
- 44:29couple of years. Her investigators have said that once she was learning from home,
- 44:39that she was rarely seen again outside the home, and her mother and
- 44:45grandparents are now criminally charged with child neglect causing death. But there is still
- 44:52a question among the school system, the state police who did check on the
- 45:00home? And we now know corroborated by the governor, that one of the
- 45:04troopers who was concerned went from the home a year ago directly to the local
- 45:12Human Services department intended file a referral, and then finally Child Protective Services itself.
- 45:22Did they get a referral or not? Were they called by neighbors or
- 45:24not? And if so, what did CPS do? So those those three
- 45:30entities, the school system, the police, and Child Productive Services if they
- 45:37were if they were supposed to serve as a backup representing the public to protect
- 45:44this girl's life and well being, who among them dropped the ball is the
- 45:49question, and tomorrow may provide more answers, Yeah, and I know there's
- 45:57you know, there's Uh. It'll be interesting to see because we know from
- 46:00reporting that that state police went directly to the CPS office and Foster and the
- 46:07GPS shows they were there for eight minutes, but there's no report on hand,
- 46:12and I mean, hopefully we're getting going to get to the bottom of
- 46:15all that, right, I mean, what exactly happened. It would be
- 46:20very disappointing if all of those people gathered and they have given almost a week
- 46:25of notice. I think the notification of this briefing came out on Friday.
- 46:32The briefing itself will be on Thursday. It would be it would be very
- 46:37disappointing and all letdown if if there were not some resolution of what happened here.
- 46:46And you've got to think that there at least will be more elaboration on
- 46:53what they know and what they don't know? Yeah, or what you know?
- 46:58Or why have them? Why have the briefing? Right? If there's
- 47:01not, it looks like, yeah, go ahead. The governor has talked
- 47:08about this a couple of times, and at the last briefing he did acknowledge
- 47:13that the true there was a trooper who was sent to the home in March
- 47:19twenty twenty three, a little more than a year ago, and WCCHS Television
- 47:23and probably others had already reported that there was audio and a report that that
- 47:30trooper believed that a referral needed to be made. Leslie Rubin, reporter from
- 47:35WCHS Television, did a freedom of information request for geographic data of the trooper's
- 47:43movement, and it shows that immediately upon leaving the home, the trooper did
- 47:49go to the local Human services office. But the you don't I mean,
- 47:55he was there for eight minutes. It would be odd to think that he
- 48:01didn't go inside or got distracted or forgot what he was going to say,
- 48:05I mean, especially after going straight there. But from the outside looking in,
- 48:08I don't know that we have any way of knowing. The governor also
- 48:14last week, when he was talking about the troopers movements, said, you
- 48:17know, who knows what he did. We don't have a record of the
- 48:22trooper going inside, or signing in or filing a report. So that's the
- 48:29kind of question that I hope can be further elaborated on. There have also
- 48:32been questions about Child Protective Service's own record keeping system, which is called path,
- 48:39and whether it has the ability to truly and fully keep the do the
- 48:46kind of record keeping that is that is necessary for complicated situations and situations involving
- 48:52kids all over the state. So these are all things that I think deserves
- 48:58some light shed upon them. Okay, So that is at two o'clock tomorrow,
- 49:02and as we mentioned, it's in person, and you can count on
- 49:07probably one hand how many times that's happened over the last several years. Yeah,
- 49:13in persons has not been the Governor's preference, but to me, it
- 49:16just seems like there are so many people on this particular news event, you
- 49:24know, panelists representing the Governor's office itself, the State Police, Department of
- 49:31Human Services, it would I think, just be cumbersome to handle on a
- 49:36zoom call. So they're all going to be together in one room, and
- 49:39you know, I think that will lend itself to a little bit of back
- 49:44and forth and reacting to each other and the ability to elaborate. Brad,
- 49:46thanks for a time, appreciate it. Hey, thanks Jeff, take care.
