- Hey, welcome to VoraPrep Audio. Today's episode is from our CPA Exam Strategy Masterclass: "Decoding the CPA 75: What Psychometric Scoring Really Means". Most candidates walk out of Prometric convinced they failed because they missed questions they felt they should have known. Here is why the math says otherwise. Ava: Marcus, almost every day in the community someone posts: "I know I got at least 20 questions wrong on FAR today, there is no way I got a 75." And three weeks later, they post a score of 82. Why does that happen? Marcus: Because their brain is anchoring on high school grading scales where missing 20 questions out of 50 means you got a D. The Uniform CPA Examination does not calculate a percentage. It is an Item Response Theory scaled score from 0 to 99. Ava: Right. A 75 does not mean 75 percent. It is a psychometric threshold representing minimum entry-level practitioner competence. Marcus: Exactly. And here is the secret weapon: pre-test items. On every single exam, between 12 and 15 percent of your MCQs and at least one full simulation are experimental questions that count for zero points. Ava: So when you get that bizarre prompt on testlet two that looks like it was written in another language, you do not spiral. You recognize: this is probably a pre-test item. Give it 90 seconds, pick the most defensible option, and protect your clock. Marcus: And remember, testlets are no longer adaptive under CPA Evolution. The difficulty is fixed. Protect your time, bank the points in the blueprint, and leave 2 hours and 15 minutes for the simulations. Marcus: If you want to put this exact strategy into practice with thousands of blueprint-aligned questions and an authentic exam simulator, head over to voraprep.com.
