- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, thank you so much for taking a few moments out of your day to spend with me.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: I wanted to take us on a little journey over the next couple of episodes, and I wanted to start tackling the uh concept of how we can develop a healthier, effective way to communicate.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: So just to start off with today, um, you know, Stephen Covey was known to say, seek first to understand, then to be understood.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: And truthfully, communication is the giving and receiving of information or news between different people.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: And communication honestly is more than just talking.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Uh during an exchange, there are several layers of communication that happen at once.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Yes, you know, there is the communication of actually speaking or talking, but it's not it's not just that that consists that communication consists of.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: It consists of a wide range of expressions that end up conveying different information.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: And so communication really can build trust and rapport between individuals.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: It can also divide and create defensiveness depending on how we're communicating.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, communication can encourage and uplift as well as it can discourage and create strife between groups of people or individuals.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: So it's really not just about what we say, it's about how we say it and how we deliver our message.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: And much of our communication is actually nonverbal.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: You know, it it's nonverbal, and there are subtle influences that actually influence, there's subtle movements or or how we communicate that can influence the success or or failure of the engagement that we're having.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: I had previously spoken about the concept of um nonviolent communication, which is Mark Marshall Rosenberg had had really um done a lot around that concept of nonviolent communication.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: But I thought, you know, this it recently this has come up more and more.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: It's just I can't seem to effectively communicate in the workplace, or I can't seem to effectively communicate to my kids, or I can't seem to effectively communicate to my partner.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: And so I just felt that it was important to spend a little bit of time talking about how we can in a more effective, healthy way communicate with one another.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Because healthy communication is really an important part of being successful at home and in business, and people who are able to develop healthy communication styles and uh they tend to have deeper friendships, they tend to experience uh those they tend to experience more positive interpersonal relationships, and so learning to express yourself in a healthier way truthfully ends up um paying off in so many different ways in life, and there's really there's no you know perfect way to master communication.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Um what's really true is that you know you may try to communicate one way and it may not work, and it's about how do we continue to evolve and grow to find the best way to communicate to different people.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Um, because some people aren't able to hear things in a certain way, but we can choose to show up in a way where we're intending to communicate in a healthier way.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: So, really, I just wanted to spend a few a few episodes here talking about ways that we can uh create that.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: So there are really four main ways that we can, or four elements that go into um creating this effective, healthier communication skill.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: One is to be a great listener.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: That's number one.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Um two is to really master that nonverbal communication, you know, what aren't we saying but still communicating?
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Uh number three is to really being able to own and manage how we're feeling in a situation.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: And then number four in healthy communication is remaining curious.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, when we talk about these four elements of communication, it it's really about how well we're engaging with others and you know, trying to be as successful as possible in that engagement.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: So the better able you're the better you are able to listen or to maybe understand another person's body language, non-verbal communication, or able to just regulate your emotions.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: And I'm being very clear here that I'm not saying push your emotions away, but to really notice and be aware of your emotions and then to stay interested in what's going on, you'll find it easier to just build those the ability to communicate in a healthier, more effective way.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: So as we go through the next few episodes, I want to dive a little bit deeper into each of those.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: However, um, it's really important to just recognize that what we're talking about here is, you know, not there's not going to be one, again, there's not gonna be one way that we communicate.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: These are the these episodes are really going to be meant to help us develop ways that we um can just show up in a more engaged way in communication, really being focused on how we're showing up, what our story is, because a lot of times when we think about what happens in communication that seems to go wrong, if we really dial it back, we will notice that we may be projecting our own insecurities or our own fears or worries, and that's what drove where that conversation went.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: So, with that, if um you would like to talk to me about uh ways to develop your communication skills or anything else that might be coming up in your world, definitely feel free to book a call with me at chatwithcomedy.com.
