- 0:32Welcome to the Becker's Healthcare podcast. I'm Kelly
- 0:35Gooch, senior editor and enterprise lead at Becker's.
- 0:37I'm thrilled to be joined today by Jeremy
- 0:39Stevens, executive vice president and chief human resources
- 0:42officer at Highlands Health in South Carolina.
- 0:45Jeremy, thank you so much for being here.
- 0:47I'm really looking forward to this conversation, especially
- 0:50given the work you're leading at the intersection
- 0:51of workforce and transformation, talent development, and organizational
- 0:55culture, all areas that are, of course, front
- 0:57and center for for systems navigating
- 0:59continued change today.
- 1:01So to kick us off, I'd love for
- 1:03if you could introduce yourself, share a little
- 1:04bit about your background and and your path
- 1:06in health care leadership that led you to
- 1:08Highlands Health.
- 1:09Oh, sure. Thank you. And and and thanks
- 1:11for having me. I appreciate the opportunity to
- 1:14share a little bit about what we're doing.
- 1:15Really excited at Highlands Health. We've got some
- 1:17really great initiatives.
- 1:19Before we get into all that, like like
- 1:21you said, I'm Jeremy Stevens. I've been at
- 1:23Thailand's for about eight years. I've been in
- 1:25health care for probably fifteen.
- 1:28And then my background's kinda crazy. Before that,
- 1:31I was actually the state personnel director for
- 1:33the state of Michigan
- 1:35for four years. And then before that, about
- 1:37fifteen years or so in automotive. So I've,
- 1:40been around the block in several different industries
- 1:43and really enjoy health care though. I think
- 1:45that it's, a really an opportunity for HR
- 1:48to make a real difference.
- 1:50Absolutely. Sounds like just a wonderful background, like
- 1:53you said, across many areas there.
- 1:55So
- 1:56I was wondering
- 1:57what maybe was the most important initiative you
- 2:00led in the last year or so, and
- 2:02and what did you do, and what were
- 2:04the results? I'd love to hear from you.
- 2:06Sure. So I I I think there's two
- 2:08major projects that I'd like to to hit
- 2:10on. The first was we really focused on
- 2:13travelers. We had
- 2:15a pretty high number of travelers during COVID
- 2:17and and did not
- 2:19really do a great job of bringing that
- 2:21number down.
- 2:23And so we really made a focus in
- 2:252025
- 2:26of attacking the traveler number
- 2:29and getting that number down. We were at
- 2:31about 80 travelers. We're down to 12 now.
- 2:34So it was a real significant decrease. We
- 2:36have around 2,500 total employees.
- 2:40So getting that number from 80 to 12,
- 2:42that's a big deal for us. And we
- 2:44really, really put a lot of time, a
- 2:46lot of effort, and focus all the hiring
- 2:49managers, operations, and HR partnered and really did
- 2:52a great job in in focusing on that.
- 2:54And that was a big initiative and a
- 2:56huge cost savings.
- 2:57And then the other one that I'm really
- 2:59excited about, we launched what's called the Highlands
- 3:01Health Scholars Program.
- 3:04And and what that is is a program
- 3:06where
- 3:07we partnered with the local school district in
- 3:11the county
- 3:12as well as the local,
- 3:14technical college. So Georgetown Community School District and
- 3:18Horry Georgetown Technical College.
- 3:20And we came together, the three of us,
- 3:23and developed this scholar
- 3:25and what it is is we look at
- 3:27juniors in high school,
- 3:28and we interview them. They can apply,
- 3:31and they're then selected for their senior year
- 3:34to go through a curriculum
- 3:36of
- 3:37health science classes.
- 3:39And then when they go through that, they're
- 3:41also receiving
- 3:43a dual education dual,
- 3:44certification through Horry Georgetown Technical College
- 3:48while they're also getting their diploma through high
- 3:50school.
- 3:51And so as they're doing that, they're graduating
- 3:54with that dual certification
- 3:56in health science,
- 3:58and then that allows us,
- 4:00we're hiring every one of them. We guarantee
- 4:02them a job when they get through the
- 4:03program,
- 4:04and then we bring them on board. And
- 4:07we also have, ability
- 4:09in our state in partnership with Horry Georgetown
- 4:12Technical College to offer kids two years free
- 4:16education so they get their associate's degree.
- 4:18So their junior year, they figure out they
- 4:20wanna be in health science. They're guaranteed a
- 4:23job. While they're working, they can get their
- 4:25two year degree for free. We're real flexible
- 4:27with that.
- 4:28And then the goal is to find some
- 4:30some sponsors or some some folks to help
- 4:33us get from a two year to a
- 4:34four year degree for for those folks also
- 4:36with the end goal being really to give
- 4:39students that are juniors in our community
- 4:42the ability to have free education.
- 4:44So we're over halfway there getting them through
- 4:47two year program.
- 4:48We wanna end up with about 50 kids
- 4:51per year.
- 4:52We have 15
- 4:53that,
- 4:54went through for our first inaugural year, which
- 4:56was a really good number, and we're going
- 4:58through that year right now. And our goal
- 5:00is for 50 for next year. So that's
- 5:02a real big focus. And if you just,
- 5:04you know, you think about that after five
- 5:06years, that's potentially
- 5:08250
- 5:09kids
- 5:10that have received all the education that they
- 5:12want
- 5:13and are members of our community with great
- 5:16paying jobs,
- 5:17working with us.
- 5:19And it's just a win for the community,
- 5:20for the hospital, for our patients, for everybody.
- 5:22So we're really excited about that program.
- 5:26Wow. That's amazing. Both initiatives,
- 5:28just incredible results there. And I was going
- 5:30to ask, how many say in the system?
- 5:32So, yeah, that's, just wonderful to hear. It's
- 5:34been able to to really be valuable and
- 5:37a great
- 5:38great thing for the organization that you're continuing
- 5:40to to evolve.
- 5:42And it it leads in actually to what
- 5:44I wanted to hit on next. You mentioned
- 5:46continuing to to look at that. And so
- 5:49looking ahead,
- 5:51what are maybe some of
- 5:53the big priorities and headwinds you're focused on
- 5:55for 2026? Anything else you'd mentioned? Yeah. I
- 5:58I I think the big focus for us
- 6:00is to continue with our pipeline development. We're
- 6:03in one of the fastest growing counties in
- 6:05The United States.
- 6:07We're near the Myrtle Beach area,
- 6:09and so our projections for growth are are
- 6:12just incredible.
- 6:14And so with that growth, it's going to
- 6:16mean that we need to really,
- 6:19have the pipelines in order to expand our
- 6:23services to the community.
- 6:25And so pipeline management is a huge focus.
- 6:29One of the biggest initiatives within that space
- 6:31is our student program
- 6:33that we developed several years ago.
- 6:35And and what we've done is created a
- 6:38a a department that focuses on relationships with
- 6:41students
- 6:42from, really, kindergarten all the way through college
- 6:45and even,
- 6:47masters, and we have a residence program.
- 6:49So we're really focused on developing those students.
- 6:52And what we've seen already
- 6:54is about 30%
- 6:56of our open positions
- 6:58annually are filled through our student program.
- 7:01So it's a huge pipeline. It's almost a
- 7:04third of all of our positions are filled
- 7:06right there through that program.
- 7:08I know a lot of employers
- 7:11struggle with whether or not to put it
- 7:12in place or how to manage it, but,
- 7:15it's it's been an absolute,
- 7:17amazing thing for us to do. And it's
- 7:20really solidified our presence in the area, in
- 7:23the community,
- 7:24and has really allowed us to
- 7:26become a premier employer.
- 7:28We've been recognized through Becker's
- 7:30as,
- 7:31employer of choice now for the past three
- 7:33years in a row. And I think that
- 7:35student program is really feeding into that nicely
- 7:37and will really be a big thing for
- 7:39our for our future growth.
- 7:42That's so wonderful to hear just how that
- 7:44pipeline development has has come about and just
- 7:47the success there as as well. And and
- 7:50we all know as you as you said
- 7:51that these
- 7:53initiatives are are not always
- 7:55smooth sailing, and there are maybe challenges along
- 7:58the way.
- 7:59And so wanted to ask you also just
- 8:02maybe what's the hardest thing you'll have to
- 8:03do in the coming year?
- 8:04So this year's gonna be a bit of
- 8:06a challenge for us in a in a
- 8:07very, very good positive way. We are
- 8:11in we've enhanced our relationship with MUSC in
- 8:15South Carolina.
- 8:16And so this will be a bit of
- 8:17a transitional year for us,
- 8:19and that's exciting. It's gonna allow us to
- 8:22provide more services.
- 8:24It's gonna allow us to have,
- 8:27expanded networks. It's gonna just allow us to
- 8:29take care of our patients in the community
- 8:31better. And and we we were,
- 8:35doing a great job at Thailand's, but adding
- 8:37MUSC to us in a more enhanced relationship
- 8:41is really gonna strengthen that that whole opportunity
- 8:44for our community to get the care that
- 8:46they deserve and that they need. And with
- 8:48the growth that we're experiencing in this area,
- 8:50it was it was needed and and super
- 8:52exciting. So it's gonna be a big year
- 8:54for us to transition
- 8:56and and think about that impact, what it
- 8:58means, how we pull it all together,
- 9:00where we focus,
- 9:02and and really staying focused on our employees
- 9:04and making sure that they're real happy, which
- 9:07they are, but making sure that we're really
- 9:09doing a good job with the transition and
- 9:11and just kind of working through all that.
- 9:12So that's gonna be a big, big focus
- 9:14for us this year.
- 9:16But we'll still have to keep an eye
- 9:17on all our other critical things when it
- 9:19comes to engagement and turnover and pipeline and,
- 9:22all of that. So a lot of strategic
- 9:25work that we'll be doing as well as
- 9:26just a lot of transitional and transactional type
- 9:29things, but a really exciting time for the
- 9:31future for TidalHealth.
- 9:34Yeah. Lots of lots of things to focus
- 9:36on. I know it at the same time
- 9:37there. And, I know you mentioned, of course,
- 9:40MUSC. That sounds like that's going to be
- 9:42just a wonderful opportunity,
- 9:44moving forward.
- 9:45Anything else you mentioned on just where you
- 9:47see
- 9:48the best opportunities for organizational growth? Anything else
- 9:50you'd mentioned about about either that transition or
- 9:53or other efforts?
- 9:55So I I think for us, as I
- 9:57mentioned a couple times now with the growth
- 9:59that we're experiencing in this area,
- 10:02we're gonna put in several new freestanding
- 10:05EDs. We're gonna build a new hospital
- 10:07over the next few years. So
- 10:09that's gonna require
- 10:11growth. I mean, it it could easily gosh.
- 10:14Maybe even double our size.
- 10:16But it's certainly going to allow us to
- 10:19to reach the patients and and have that
- 10:21community
- 10:22focus that we need.
- 10:24But it's gonna be tough for HR. That's
- 10:26that's gonna be a real challenging year and
- 10:27for our operations group and and really all
- 10:30the areas to to really bring the talent
- 10:33and the right talent, develop the talent, make
- 10:35sure we keep all our talent, and we
- 10:37grow towards the future. I I think that,
- 10:40as I mentioned, this is just an extremely
- 10:42exciting time. I think we're gonna be,
- 10:45really identified with this partnership with MUSC as
- 10:48the premier
- 10:49place for health care in our area. And,
- 10:52I'm excited to make sure we're bringing in
- 10:54the providers and the the rest of the
- 10:56staff to to provide those services for,
- 10:59all the people that need it in our
- 11:01community. It's just a really, really exciting time.
- 11:05I really appreciate your time and really look
- 11:07forward
- 11:08to working with you again soon. Oh, it's
- 11:10my pleasure. Thank you for the opportunity.
