- 0:22SPEAKER_01: Hello, everybody, and welcome back to another episode of the Tortured Fans Apartment Podcast.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: I am Sean Boyle.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: I'm joined by a recurring guest, a good friend, host of the Get Back Coach podcast, and a college football junkie.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: It is Mr.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Jake Myers.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Jake, how are you?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Sean, we are a few days away from the start of the college football season.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Week zero is upon us.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Listen, it's not a full course meal, week zero, but it is an appetizer.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: No matter where you go, you want to get nachos for the table, you want to get mozzarella sticks, you want to have something that's gonna hold you over until the full course that you can dig into.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: And that is this weekend.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: It's been too long, and we have a nice little slate coming up, too, Sean.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Jake, you did such a good job.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: You brought the energy, you laid out what we're gonna talk about today.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: I don't even need to do any hosting duties.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: I also, of course, love an appetizer.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Who amongst us doesn't?
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: It is week zero, so we're going to get back in the swing of things.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: We're talking college football today.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: It is our big preview.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: So we brought in the expert.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: We're gonna get into some storylines.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: We'll talk about the preseason poll.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: We'll go through maybe some quarterbacks that we we're keeping our eye on this season, and then we have some questions about the Big Ten, the SEC, and then Jake will take us off the roading a little bit to some other teams and conferences that we need to keep an eye on.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Jake, let's start it off with very broad general strokes here.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: What are some of the biggest storylines in the sport as we head into this new season?
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Well, I think the biggest storyline in all of college football is Lane Kiffen going to LSU.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: That is, I mean, Lane Kiffen goes full villain and embraces it and goes to LSU.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Sean, it's almost like we were warming up to Lane Kiffin a little bit.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Like him and L or him at Ole Miss, it's it was kind of working.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Yes, he's smug, yes, he's arrogant, but he was at Ole Miss, and I don't know, it just you were kind of rooting for him towards the end, right?
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's weird.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: I I hate Lane Kiffin and I hate Ole Miss, but something about it kind of worked.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: You know, he was a little bit better version of himself than I'd seen in the past.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Right, it was awesome.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And listen, almost like WWE wrestling, this was triple H esque.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, because there was always because Triple H, uh uh here here's my WWE rant here.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Triple H was one of the best heels from the late 90s all throughout his career.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: But sometimes the people started to cheer for him, and then it's like man, he's gonna be a good guy, this is gonna be great, and then what does he do?
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: He gets the sledgehammer and he knocks his opponent out.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, he hits Shawn Michaels, he takes out Stone Cold Steve Austin, all right, and that's what Lane Kiffin did here.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: It was like the people are cheering for me.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm gonna screw over my current program during the in the midst of a playoff run, and now I'm gonna go to the dark side, I'm gonna go and be a villain, I'm gonna go to LSU.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And listen, LSU and Sean, this is why this is one of the best, not only that drama, but LSU has one of the most rabid fan bases.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, and if if they start slow, Sean, if they start slow, listen, three out of their first four games, uh, they have to play Clemson, Texas AM, and sandwiched right in the middle there, September 19th.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: They have to go to Old Miss.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, that is a tough start for LSU.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: So these this first month is going to be beautiful.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: That is a storyline to watch, and and of course, Sean, to add to it, you have these NFL players, most notably uh Daquan Wright and Xavion, something defensive tackle, I can't think of his last name, also coming back because they did not make NFL squads, which is preposterous to me.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Big Ten has gone forward and said, hey, we're not going to allow those guys to join our rosters.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Lane Kiffin's gobbling them up.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: He's taken anyone he can get.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Say what you want about Lane.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: I I really hate the guy, but he is absolute box office, baby.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Asses in seats is what Lane Kiffin does.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: And I do have to appreciate it because almost any chance he's gotten throughout his career to turn heel or to play just that villain character, he has taken it and he has done it so well.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: So I think you're right, Jake, to lead the discussion with LSU because LSU as a brand, first of all, I mean, they get a lot of things right.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: They have cool jerseys, it seems like an awesome place to go, the bayou, the Death Valley at night.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: There's so much cool about it.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And then you add Lane Kiffin into the mix, it's just gotta be the number one story this year.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's probably the coolest program.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: The the program recruits itself.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: You don't have to really do anything.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Those kids, those kids don't care.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: You think those kids care about the Saints in Louisiana?
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: No, they care about playing for LSU.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: You don't have to even recruit.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Uh, by the way, Ed Orgeron, Coach O, is on staff with Lane Kiffin.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: I didn't even know that.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: What's he doing?
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Uh a consultant.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: He's basically there to like fire people up and like sell LSU more to recruits.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: They had video of him leading recruits onto the field at night.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Which I thought was was pretty cool.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: But dude, LSU had like like you said, they have this brand, this cool factor, and also they don't care as long as you're winning.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: This, I mean, yeah, Lane Kiffin, you got uh Kim Mulkey and her stupid jackets.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: You know, Will Wade, Will Wade was there.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: I don't know, is Will Wade still there?
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: No, I think he's gone, right?
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: He's back.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Is he back?
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Will Wade's back?
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: So yeah, Will Wade's back.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: They don't care at all as long as you're winning games.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's the ultimate.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Heck, we're gonna bring this back to WWE or WCW.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: LSU is the NWO.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: That's who they are.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: They are the bad guys, but they're just so cool that you're like, I kind of want to cheer for them, but you know they're all terrible.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: That's a good way to put it.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: That's really a good way to frame it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: There is still something about me that, you know, I'm just like, I kind of do like LSU.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Even though it's lane, even when it was Brian Kelly, it's like, you know what?
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Those colors, that that atmosphere, Cajun food, it's like, yeah, they check a lot of boxes.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: If I was open for courtship in my fandom, LSU would be high on the list.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to watch them under lane.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Jake, what else do you have for me in terms of storylines?
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh, really quick before we move on.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Well, what do you take of these guys coming back?
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Probably shouldn't have it happen, but I also don't know where we're drawing.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: It's hard impossible for the NCAA to draw lines and stand firm with those lines now.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: They they seem powerless.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: If they do make a decision, someone just goes and finds a judge in their county and gets a temporary injunction and is able to play.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: I do think it's a one-year thing, it seems like, because I think that fifth year of eligibility is gonna be right widely accepted next year.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: And this is kind of the interim where people are squeezing in before it's actually changed for good.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's great.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I think if you're playing in an NFL training camp, you shouldn't be allowed a week later to be back in college.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: But it seems like that's gonna happen.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: So I would have been okay if they would have declared for the draft, and then after the draft, they're like, I was selected seventh or sixth, or I didn't get drafted, and then they wanted to go back into school.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: I think I would have been okay with it.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I would have been like, okay, that's fine.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: That's almost kind of like basketball in a sense, where like they do the tryouts and then they can come back if they want to.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't hate that because then they're not taking part in OTAs or off-season programs or anything.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: But once you're in a professional off-season program and then kind of see the writing on the wall that you're not gonna make the team after we're almost done with training camp.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Like there's only a couple weeks left.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: I think it's crazy, but I basically think we're all just trying our best to ignore the craziness of college sports and still enjoy the on-field product.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: And in terms of that, I think we're in for an exciting year, so I can't be too upset about it.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna let this ruin my mood.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: No, and that's the thing.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, people have been talking about college football being ruined for 20 years now.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: And yeah, it doesn't have the same shine as it used to be, but man, the sport itself has never been bigger.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Like honestly.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: And I like that the fact that Indiana is the defending national champion.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Like, there's parody that we haven't seen in so long.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: So I think there's way more positive than negative going on.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Now, Indiana winning, it's the best thing to happen for the sport, it's the worst thing for every other head coach in the country.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Because now it's like, well, Indiana did it.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Why can't you?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Like, why like Indiana did it?
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And dude, that is just a lightning in the bottle type situation.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: However, great for the sport because now everyone feels like, hey, we have a shot.
- 9:36unknown: Yeah.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Every program, every power five program is like, hey, we could do this.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: I I think it's the whole, hey, if we go nine and three, we'll be ecstatic, which I think those still are there.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: But in the grand scheme of things, every team has that feeling of, hey, we can win it all, which is awesome for the sport, which really seemed like there were haves and have nots for, I don't know, since the dawn of time.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was one of the biggest things for me, honestly.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: I would be one of these weird fans where I enjoyed watching the regular season much more than I enjoyed watching the playoff my whole career.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, because that's yeah.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Because it just seemed like I was never interested in those teams that were playing for the championship.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: And it was always amongst the same group of five or six at most.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: And I just don't have a rooting interest in any of those.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: So now, at least the shred of hope that, like you said, Indiana does provide, it's like, well, why not my my alma mater?
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Why not my team?
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Why can't we have somebody rich come in and strike lightning with a coach and go on a run like that?
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Now, the reality is more so the fact that look at all the schools that aren't Indiana that have tried winning these past few seasons, it's a lot harder than just saying, hey, hire a good coach, spend a little bit of money, and you're gonna be national champions.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: But I do think them opening that door is exciting.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: And you know, it's it's just it's just wild that when the the majority of the northern teams are able to legally pay players, how the Big Ten has kind of emerged as kind of the best conference, and now you have Indiana, who has the largest alumni base in the country now being competitive in football.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Crazy how that's happening.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Just just crazy what happens when everyone can pay people.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: You know, it's nuts.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: That's almost like the Shane Gillis accusation, Alabama Jones down there in the Saban.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: He did not.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Saban left.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, Saban didn't want to deal with the free agency every year, but like you you can't tell me that he wasn't or he didn't know of backdoor deals going on so he could hoard all the best players, and the SEC could hoard all the best players, you know?
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, just just like another team, just like another team in Ohio does.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: But I don't want to get too far on that track.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: What else do you have for me in the way of storylines, Jake?
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: So this one here, can Texas or Notre Dame reach the mountaintop?
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's one of those things where I know we saw Texas win it uh 20-some years ago.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Notre Dame, it's been 38 years.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: And those two programs, I know Oregon is one who's never won a national title, but I'm looking at more blue bloods.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Can these two blue bloods get back into the fold?
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: And well, I mean they're into the fold, but can they win the national title with both rosters looking fairly good?
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: They both have a lot of retention coming back.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: The thing that's interesting though, both blue bloods, but both different when it comes to acceptance of players, and this is what I mean by that.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Texas should have no excuse to legitimately compete for a national title every single year.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: They have more money than everybody, they have more resources than anybody, they have the car dealerships, they're literally having Bugattis or McLaren's outside of their stadium as the recruits walk in.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Sean, have you ever seen this?
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: No, I have not.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm talking about?
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Look at pictures.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: The recruits are walking into the stadium, and there are like 12, maybe 10 McLaren's on each side with the with the windows because they're the side, the ones that go straight up, up, and the players are walking through the cars to get to Houston.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Like they know what they're doing, but they have more money than everybody else, and there is really no excuse for them to contend for a national title every single year.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Where Notre Dame it's different, and and Sean, I I'm not a Notre Dame guy, I I rooted against Notre Dame 95% of the time, just being from you know northeast Pennsylvania.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of you know Irish Catholics there who root for the Irish, but Notre Dame can't just take anybody, they still have to play the academic game, and I know that is like a crazy thought to even say, but like they have to be careful of who they take because those guys still have to go to class.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, and that's where I do respect Notre Dame in that sense.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: They're gearing up for maybe the the biggest year.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: I don't know, maybe ever.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Like this, there's more hype around Notre Dame than maybe ever.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Their schedule is like a two-game schedule.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: They gotta beat BYU in Miami.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: And heck, if they even lose to one of those games, they're still probably gonna be okay.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: They do have to play Wisconsin and Michigan State.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: However, both those teams shouldn't be good.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Um, I think right now they're like a 22-point favorite over Wisconsin, Michigan State.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're they're in for a rough rebuild.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: So I don't know, they get two Big Ten schools, but they're not really contending Big Ten teams.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: I just want to know how are those two teams gonna shake out?
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: And and here's the other thing, Sean, because Texas is loaded, especially on in their skill positions, their wide receivers.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Can Arch be the guy for them?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: I think Arch is good, but with so much hype that's been around him, and it's not his fault.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Like, I if if it doesn't work out for Arch, I'm gonna actually feel very bad for the kid.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: But here's the other thing Steve Sarkeesian, all right, is talked about as this offensive genius, and I think he's a good coach.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: But dude, you have everything at your fingertips, you have high-end recruiting, you have resources, you have money.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: How are you not putting it all together?
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: How are you not like you know what the the farthest they went is to a semifinal?
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Like, I I don't I just don't know or don't understand how Sark, being this offensive genius, hasn't been able to kind of put it all together and get him at least to a national title game.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: So I think if if Texas has a disappointing year, that seat's gonna warm up a lot in Texas.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying he's gonna get fired during the year or anything like that, or even at the end of this year, but if they go 9-3 again, or maybe 10-2 in an early exit, ooh, that seat's gonna get hot for Sartre.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Jake, I'm glad you brought up both of these schools at the top of the show here because I do think college football is better when the Texas's, the Notre Dames, the Miamis are good and at the top of the sport.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: And I think over the last couple of years, we've seen that resurgence, but there is a difference between being a playoff team and being a championship team, and that's the mountaintop you're trying to reach.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure that either will be able to do it, but I do think, just looking at it from an outsider's perspective, I think I agree.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: I think that seat in Texas, if they have a disappointing year, would be beyond hot.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: And I actually have a question for you later in the show between him and another coach as to who may stay in their job longer.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: So we'll get to that in a bit.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: But I'm excited to see both Notre Dame and Texas, two great quarterbacks, two big brands, and expectations that are sky high this season.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: I got one more storyline for you, Sean.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: And listen, this is a storyline, this is for the the hardcore college football fans.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: So if you enjoy watching all of college football, not just the SEC, not just the Big Ten, not just your team, you enjoy all aspects of college football.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: I have the storyline for you, and that is North Dakota State, FCS juggernaut bumping up to the FBS.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: They'll be joining the New Mountain West.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: They don't play a Power Four team this year, but I am really interested to see how North Dakota State does.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: We've seen App State do fairly well when they bumped up.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: James Madison has done really well.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: They just made the playoffs and listen, even Delaware last year looked decent.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: But this North Dakota State team, they were a juggernaut.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: James Madison, App State, Delaware, they were really good FCS programs.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: North Dakota State was a Titan, and now they're bumping up.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: And the one thing that I really find really interesting about this, and and it's really good for North Dakota State, and this is what uh Matt Sprouse from the Group of Five Guys, uh, check out Group of Five Guys.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Here's a little plug to one of my friends in the Twitter sphere.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Um, he said this, and I think it's totally accurate.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Usually when you bump up a competition, the biggest struggle is the difference in trenches.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Offensive line, defensive line.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: North Dakota State has their beef coming back.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: They have three offensive linemen coming back uh that were starters.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: They have four, three or four defensive linemen coming back.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: The big thing for North Dakota State is the skill guys.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: I think they should have skill guys waiting in the wings.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: And man, if they do that, you're gonna see a team that could possibly contend in the Mountain West.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, they open up this weekend, week zero, against Jacksonville State, another team that has done pretty well once they've bumped up, but it's gonna be in the Fargo dome.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: North Dakota State is a six and a half point favorite.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: I don't think that the bison are going to let Jacksonville State kind of rain on their debut in a hostile atmosphere.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: It is inside in the Fargo dome.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: That place is gonna be rocking.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Jacksonville State, I don't think, is gonna be used to it.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: So I like bison this weekend, but it'll be very interesting to watch North Dakota State throughout the entire year.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: Jake, I wasn't aware until I was listening to your podcast, the Get Back Coach, that North Dakota State was making the jump this year.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: It was one of those things I kind of heard that was happening, but then filed in a different cabinet.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: And now seeing it come to the forefront, I'm excited about that.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: You're not underestimating what they've been either.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Juggernaut's the right word.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: They have been they've been pumping pros into the NFL for a while.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: They've been dominating the sport at their level.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: I'd be shocked if they weren't a pretty solid to good team this season, honestly.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Just no, just institutional knowledge of that university makes me think they're gonna be pretty good at football.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I mean, and I already said it, you're gonna have a a hostile atmosphere that's gonna be tough for teams to come into.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: So I do think they're gonna have a very true home field advantage that the other parts of the Mountain West, or very few of them actually have.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: They're gonna have it in the trenches.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: And yeah, dude, they were a juggernaut, man.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Like they they truly, truly were.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: I think they won seven national titles uh from that playoff.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Like it's yeah, man, really good.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: And listen, I hope, and I know my my my co-host Jay, because he's a he's a huge FCS guy, more so than me, way more than me.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: I hope Montana, South Dakota State, and Montana State also one day come in and also join the Mountain West, because man, that would be fun to have those teams.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: We need to start a campaign, Jake.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Bring the Mountain West back to the mountains.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's let's get back to our roots.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Let's get back in the mountain.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it doesn't belong, it doesn't belong in the world.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Heck with the Southern California BS, man.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Let's get them, let's get some actual mountain teams back in.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Play our games at altitude, okay?
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: So I like that.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Let's move on to elevation.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Elevation.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Don't, don't, don't you dare disrespect the elevation.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: It's a real thing.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be windy and laramy.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Let's let's get back to the preseason poll here, Jake.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: I'm an ardent hater of preseason polls.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: I think they are a farce.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: I think they ruin the sport in a lot of ways.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: But ultimately, they do impact the season, whether you want to admit that or not.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: They do impact how narratives take shape, and most importantly, they give people something to talk about until the games kick off.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: So, based on all of that, we're not preseason poll truthers here on this program.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: But looking at it, Jake, is there a team that you think maybe is ranked a bit too high, and maybe a team that you think is a bit too low?
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: I want to talk about your first point, the the preseason poll.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: I'm not a fan of the preseason poll.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: I I I think it gives people stats to be used later without context that aren't true.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: Like, for example, you know, a couple years ago, Florida State was like the ranked 10th in the country.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: And you're like, oh, hey, we have a top 10 win.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Uh that team is five and seven right now.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Like that's what it does.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: And that's why I think it's a farce.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Because you're not a top 10 win.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: You'll brag about winning a top 25 game.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: That's not a top 25 game.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I know you kind of have to rank them at some point.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: And then people will argue, well, if you wait until after week four, then it's too soon.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: And it's basically the same thing.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: I get why they're in place.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: I'm just not a fan of them.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: Well, and the other thing is, Sean, we are simple, simple creatures where it's going to make more money and we're going to watch it more if there's a little number next to the team's name.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Um, because we love little numbers next to the team's name.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: If there's a little number next to the team's name, we are going to watch more.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: It's it's natural.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: It's I don't know why, but we are simple humans and we want to see the little number next to the team's name.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'll fall right into that trap.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Every week.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: I go right to look at the top.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: What are the top 25 matchups this week?
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: It's the first thing I do.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: So I mean, I understand why, and from an uh purely aesthetic standpoint, yeah, I kind of get it.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: But as far as the product itself and judging the product uh objectively, uh yeah, it's dumb.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: It's it's almost like anything you can and say will be used against you in the court of law.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, not this.
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: This should not be used against me in the court of law.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: These do not count.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: This is not not right.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: But to your main point, who do you think's ranked a bit too high?
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: I hate to say this.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: I do.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: Because, and if anyone from my show is listening right now, they can vouch for me.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: I always stick up for this team because of my co-host, but I think Texas AM is a bit overrated going into this year.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: Listen, and by the way, before the Aggie people start getting in, I picked you guys last year to make the playoff.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: I said it before anyone else.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Um, I said it before Jay.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: So I am not as high on Texas AM as I was.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: They're ranked at the top 10.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: I think they lose too much on the offensive line and in their front seven.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: I think Marcel Reed as quarterback is a little too inconsistent for me.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: I like Marcel Reed.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: Man, when he's good, man, he can be electric.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: But I just I don't trust him.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: And I do think they're overrated.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: I don't think they're gonna be a top, I definitely don't think they're gonna be a top 10 team out of the gate.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: So I have to say Texas AM.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: But again, Sean, I I put up a lot of good capital with my friends in Aggie Land.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: So I they can't be too mad at me there.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: So I think they're a little too high.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm a little bit worried.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: You come on here, and that's kind of an inflammatory comment.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: That's a fan base that I have avoided.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: I don't want to piss them off.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: They've got some rituals that I'm not necessarily familiar with or into.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: They they worry me.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: They're a frightening bunch, and they come in numbers, Jake, too.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: That's I mean, there's a lot of them.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, they are they are a rabid, organized, cultish fan base.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: I didn't want to say the C word, but I'm glad you did.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you did.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Uh listen, from it takes one to know one.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, it does.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: It takes one to no one.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: You're from theirs of the north, so that's that's listen.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Texas they have a pet stay have a lot in common.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: They really do.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Like it's that's Jay, Jay and I would say when he came up for the whiteout game, I went down there for a game.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: We called it the Cultural Exchange.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: So that's a good job by you both of you.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a good name.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: What about on the flip side, Jake?
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: What about a team that might be a little bit underrated in the preseason bowl?
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: I think for right now, it's probably appropriate, but a team that I like that I think can make some noise is Louisville.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: I think Louisville has a shot to go 10 and 2 and really push for a potential playoff spot.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: If they avoid, and this is a Jeff Braum problem, this is his problem at Purdue.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: Jeff Braum is really good as an underdog, but the Jeff Braum's problem is he's going to win a game that he's really not supposed to, where he's like, we're like, oh man, how did he pull that off?
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: But then he's gonna lose two others where you're scratching your head for days.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Like, what did this team do all week?
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: So if they can avoid that letdown spot, I mean they have all miss opening day, but other than that, they could potentially win the rest of their game.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: So 10 and 2, Louisville, they avoid Miami also on their schedule.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: So I think Louisville is a team.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they're gonna be the team itself is gonna be really good.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: I know they're gonna be decent.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: I know they're gonna be a top 25 team, but I think because of their schedule, I think this is a team that can push to for a playoff earth.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: I I give Jake, I give Jake this segment.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: I say, give me a team too high.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: You launch a stick of dynamite into the most inflammatory fan base in the sport, and then I say I ask for an underrated team and he goes with my arch rival.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: It's tough.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: It's tough out here.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: Speaking, speaking of polls, I have something I want to get off my chest.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: And I feel like your uh podcast might be the one.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: I am the kind of, and it's not a it hasn't been bad the last two years.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: I am sick of the of the revolving door of SE seams, SEC teams between 19 to 25 that they just keep rotating to give their upper echelon teams top 25 wins.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: Like, it's ridiculous.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Like Missouri, you want to you want to talk about a team that's too high?
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: I actually I have another one.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: How is Missouri ranked?
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: That's something we can get.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Like, how is Missouri ranked?
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: And it's always like Missouri always finds their way in, or South Carolina always finds their way in.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: Florida has been terrible, they're receiving votes.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: But and why is it?
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: It's to prop up the SEC propaganda machine of look at how many top 25 wins we have, and they just keep revolving the door between 19 to 25, while the teams in the Big Ten and the ACC are fighting for their lives to get ranked.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: The the Minnesotas, the Iowas, uh Illinois had to go like 8-0 before they threw them the the one year.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: They went like 7-2 to get them ranked.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, NC State in the ACC.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Like all of these teams are fighting for their life to get ranked, but ho, hey, here's five and three Mizzou.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Here's six and three South Carolina, better throw them in.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt's doing well.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: Throw him in.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Anyway, it hasn't been it hasn't been bad the last couple years.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: It hasn't because again, the Big Ten's kind of emerged as like we're the best conference.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Again, funny how that is when people can legally pay people uh players, but call that a coincidence, Jake.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm sick of it.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: I I I I hate this.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: And it and you know, I have to call out my own bias.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's because Penn State wasn't playing teams that were ranked from 15 to 25.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: It's always up.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Here's number four Ohio State, here's number three Michigan.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: And it's like, well, why can't they win top 25 games?
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Because all their good wins are in receiving votes.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: That is that is an old party trick from the SEC.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: They love stuffing the ballot down there at the bottom.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they think people aren't paying attention, but the ball knowers like yourself, Jake, you're onto them.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: You're onto them.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: And here's the kicker between 20 to 38, 40, there isn't much of a difference.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: Like 18, 19, like you a couple times you get a couple teams of the high teens that are very good.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: But like from 20 to like 35, pick one.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: Pick a power five team in there.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: Anyway, there's my rant.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: I think that's a good point to make, actually.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: I can actually echo that.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: And I'm not somebody who's usually screaming against the SEC propaganda machine, but I do think Jake has a point there.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Let's move on to some more players before we circle back and talk about the Big Ten in SEC.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: I want to talk quarterbacks with you, Jake.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: This has been touted the year of the quarterback.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Everybody's looking towards the NFL draft next year as potentially one of the best drafts for a quarterback in a long while.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: I think that means there's a lot of good quarterbacks playing in the sport this year.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: Who do you think are some of the guys you're really watching this season at quarterback?
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: So I have five, and they're in no particular order.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, perfect.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, no particular order.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Um, I do have an honorable mention that I want to throw in here.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: And I, you know what?
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Let's start with him.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: My honorable mention for top five quarterbacks, uh, Josh Hoover, transfer quarterback going to play for Indiana, has a problem with taking care of the football.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: I think with Signeti and that program's guidance, I think he can do very well.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: Kind of like the growth we saw from Fernando Mendoza, maybe not to that level, but it's there.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: So I um I really want to watch him this year, kind of see how he grows because when he's on, man, he's a really, really good quarterback.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: Now getting into my top five, let's start with Jaden Maiava.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: This guy, Lincoln Riley offense, so you know it's gonna be quarterback friendly.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: He threw for 3,700 yards last year.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Listen, USC is a team that I really think is going to take that next step and get over the hump as a program again.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: They have the most production coming back as anybody, they have a good quarterback.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: And also, if you want to throw like a future down, I think uh Myava has great value for a Heisman Dark Horse.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: So if you want to throw a little bit of money on the Heisman, you get great value with Maiava, especially if USC is on the comeback.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm not a huge fan of USC typically, but there is something special when they have a little gunslinger back there at quarterback.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Those uniforms, the West Coast, there's something pretty about watching USC throw the ball around on Saturdays.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: Classic uniforms.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: They're one of the programs never change.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: Never change it.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: So next up, one of the one of the guys that has the best Heisman odds, CJ Carr.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: I really liked this guy last year.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: If you don't know, grandson of very popular, you know, almost legendary coach of Michigan Lloyd Carr.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: The biggest question for me with him, how is he gonna do this without those two stud running backs?
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Because you're like, well, Myers, he's throwing the ball, you know.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but when you have to load the box against Notre Dame, it's gonna open things up at the second level.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: How is CJ Carr gonna react when they're game planning for you?
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: So, but listen, I love CJ Carr.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Again, I'm not a Notre Dame guy.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: I love CJ Carr.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: I think he looked great last year, and really think that this can be a year that he can pop off.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: And if he does, man, Notre Dame's gonna be scary.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: Jake, I have to give you some credit.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: You've really you've softened over the years on your Notre Dame takes, and it it's appreciated.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: You you used to, we wouldn't be able to get a word in, you know, and but you've become you've become almost a respecter, I have to say.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: You're almost an appreciator of the program.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: And I completely agree with you on CJ Carr.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: I watched a lot of him last season, was just kind of blown away time and time again with his decision making for a first-year starter.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: He was incredible in that regard.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: And I do think your point about it's gonna be a different season without Jadarion Price and Jeremiah Love, but I think that he's going to take a step as opposed to regress with the new situation.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: I think he's gonna become the main guy in the offense.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he he has to.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Like he has to.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: And listen, Sean, I resp I don't like Notre Dame, but I do I respect the program because for the most part, they run a pretty clean program.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Their guys have to go to class, they do things the right way.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: So I am a respecter of Notre Dame, but that doesn't mean I have to like them.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: But I do give them their props when they deserve it.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, see, just that's all we're asking for, and you're doing a great job.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: So who's next?
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: How about Dante Moore out of Oregon?
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: I I thought he looked great last year, really progressed from his UCL, uh, UCLA days, uh, threw for 3,500 yards, 30 touchdowns.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: This guy, I feel like Chris Collinsworth, here's a guy that uh with his legs gives defenses fits, and I think he can use his legs more than he does.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: But Dante Moore looked really good.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: Oregon's another team to kind of watch out for.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: They lot at the beginning of last year, okay.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: So I'm talking about going from 2024 to 2025.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: Oregon did not have a lot of returning guys coming back, but they just hit on the transfer portal, they they hit on guys that were waiting in the wings, and now they have even more coming back.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: So Oregon is a team to kind of watch out for.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: And listen, they're led by Dante Moore, who is a dynamic player to say the least.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: And I also agree, I watched him a little bit UCLA, and I kind of just wrote him off as like, oh, he's he's no good.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: And then seeing him last season at Oregon, he was unbelievable.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: I couldn't believe it was the same player.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: So he made a lot of strides since that freshman year at UCLA.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: He's a guy who's all over draft boards.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: I think returning to Oregon's probably a wise move.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: He's gonna make some good money, and he's probably going to have an even stronger season.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: And listen, that's that's the good thing about NIL is you know, Dante Moore could have went to the pros, been a third-round draft pick, you know, uh, maybe second probably second round, maybe second, third round draft pick.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: Uh he comes back and now he's gonna make more money because again, he's there's an incentive to come back with that money.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: But Sean, you talked about seeing him in UCLA.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, one, just maturity-wise, just growing like that is gonna make you better, but also it's a lot easier when you got dudes around you for sure.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: That helps a lot.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, who's next?
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: How about all let's go back to Ole Miss?
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Uh, Trinidad Chamblus returns for some unfinished business.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: Again, he's like 26 years old, but again, another dynamic player.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, I think his offense last year was super quarterback friendly.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: And I am just wondering how he's gonna do because they have a new offensive coordinator, John Baker, coming in.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: I forget where Baker's coming from.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: But if it's different from last year, how is he gonna fit into it?
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: But he's still a very good quarterback, dynamic dude, versatile, and a guy to keep a watch for.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like the prototypical.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: When you think college quarterback, he's the one that comes to mind that maybe might have a better year than some of these other guys we're gonna talk about, but maybe doesn't transition as well to the NFL as some of those others will.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: But I think in terms of just winning 12 games this year, I think he's high up on the list of guys you'd want.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: And he's what, 24?
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's 24.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Just turned 24.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: Look at that.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's pretty old.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: He can almost rent a car, which is yeah, it's concerning.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: But that is now the new norm.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then I believe you're last one.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, last guy.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: Julian's saying, uh, led the nation in completion percentage last year, has the best receiver in the sport in Jeremiah Smith.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: Listen, here's the thing about being the Ohio State quarterback.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: You just don't screw up.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: And because you have dudes all around you.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: You know, I talked about Texas, uh, talked about LSU.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: That's kind of Ohio State.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: Maybe not so much of the recruiting pool.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's still pretty big, but Ohio, Ohio State has the money, they have the NIL, they have the resources.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: You know, kids don't have to worry about the academics really going there.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: You can take your five online, you know, four online classes and basket weaving and calling.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: We didn't come to play school, Jake.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: We didn't come to play school.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Or and now, what is he on Fox now?
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: He's somewhere.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's he's excellent.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: He's absolute delight.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: But Julian's saying, man, just don't screw up.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: And I think he'll be better than he was last year.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: And again, even when they lose a bunch of guys, they have guys just waiting.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: They have five, four or five stars behind four and five stars just stacked up.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: So I think you have to put whoever's the quarterback of Ohio State, you almost have to throw them in there.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: It's honestly an interesting position, too, because they always have the best receiving core.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: You talk about how they have the best receiver, Jeremiah Smith.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: You can trust that the guys behind him are just going to be absolute world beaters as well.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: The pipeline of Ohio State receivers to the NFL is unbelievable.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: But weirdly, the Ohio State quarterback to the NFL transition hasn't been as smooth.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: We haven't seen as much success there.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: It's kind of just hoping CJ Stroud works out.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: Justin Fields wasn't the most successful.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: Will Howard's a stealer.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: I could tell you this for free.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: He's not it.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: He's the worst one.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: Cardell Jones was never great in the NFL.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's been a lot of kind of misses at the next level with Ohio State, but it kind of goes back to your point.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: When you're the quarterback in college there, it just don't ruin it.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: Don't steer us off the road.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, CJ Stroud, not to get into too much NFL talk, CJ Stroud and Justin Fields were better than some of the other guys, than like Troy Smith, Cardale Jones, Dwayne Haskins, RAP.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: It was a step in the right direction, especially Stroud.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: He's he's a good quarterback.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: The thing that again, this is only my personal opinion.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: Nick Saban used to say this matchups beat scheme nine out of ten times.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: So what does Ohio State do?
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: They have the better players than everybody else.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Like they have just better dudes.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: So what are you gonna do?
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: You're going to take advantage of matchups.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Well, it's easier to take advantage of matchups when obviously they're on your side.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: You don't have to scheme around.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, yes, there's scheme involved, but you're you're not playing chess, you're playing checkers, and you're winning playing checkers.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: So I think that is a huge thing where you have players who are just better than the opposition, who are more talented than the opposition, and we're just gonna take advantage of matchups.
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: And I think that is why the quarterback position doesn't pan out.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: Because Sean, let's be honest, and I don't I'm not saying this is just Ohio State, but this is almost anywhere.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: You're not training your quarterback to be a better quarterback, you're training your quarterback to win football games now, and I think that is stunting their growth, and I think that's why the NFL has a quarterback kind of getting into a quarterback problem right now.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: It's definitely a quarterback problem in the NFL.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: I saw a stat, I'm gonna get it wrong, but it's directionally correct.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: Basically, last season, I think there were six people who threw for 4,000 yards or averaged 300 yards passing in a game, either one of the two.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: And 10 years ago, there was 20 quarterbacks that did that.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: And it's a combination, people have explained it with the two high safeties becoming more and more of a thing in the NFL, but also just the lack of development in college has become night and day compared to what it used to be.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: So it doesn't necessarily affect college football and how they win there, but it does affect them at the next level.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: So I think that's a good point to bring up.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's and again, I don't want to get too much into X's and Nose, but listen, linebackers can move now.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: And I think that's the other thing.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: You're you're going to run cover two.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: If you run cover two out of a 4-2-5, you only have two true linebackers out there, and the rest are safety.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: So now you can play cover two and you can man everything else up, and now you have everyone blanketed.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: So there's that.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: There's the development.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: And listen, like we used to see that development in from high school to college of guys going to college and them like not playing because they don't know the mental game.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: They don't know how to do the mental game.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: And now it's, yeah, they have the mental game in college, but it's not as intelligent.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: What's the word I'm looking for?
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: It's not as complex and abstract as it used to be.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: So now you have quarterbacks, they're not changing things at the line as much.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: They're just saying this is what the this is the play that we're running.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: So the old days of Peyton Manning versus Ray Lewis and them making like five different checks and playing a chess match, yeah, is kind of long gone because we're not asking our quarterbacks to really do that much in college because we're just taking advantage of matches.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Yes, you are not, and it's not college's fault either.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: They're not their job is not to develop kids for the NFL, their job is to win win college football games.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: I think the perfect example of this is Jackson Dart was with John Gruden doing his one of his QB camps ahead of when he got drafted.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: And he was like, All right, go on, show me your snap count.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: And Jackson Dart just he just clapped to win the ball.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: And Gruden's like, no, come on, what the hell is that?
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: And he's like, No, that's it.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: It's like, no, that's what that's how we snap the ball.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: And he's like, You gotta be shitting me.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: Like it's it was perfect, and that's just kind of the oversimplification we've seen over the years.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: It makes it easier for your kids to win games at that point in their life, than it does help them for any point in the future.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: So we'll put a pin in that for now.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Jake will stay in the Big Ten.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: We just talked about Ohio State.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: What do you think the Big Ten looks like at the top this year?
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: Is I I think we have to start with Indiana just out of respect out of what they've done.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: I will say, I don't think I'm not saying we need to put them first, but I just want to talk about them first because they are defending national champions.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: Kurt Signetti, I was all in on him.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: I thought it was great, the Pittsburgh man.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: I do think he might be starting to talk a little bit too much, Jake.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: I didn't love this Notre Dame comment.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: He made.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: He basically said, Yeah, we'll play Notre Dame.
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: If they come to our place twice, we go there once because they're not in a conference.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: It's like, hey, Kurt, that's like the flashing billboard outside of South Bend is like, hey, we're not in a conference, come make fun of us.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: That has nothing to do with that conversation.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: So it seems like he was taking a shot for no reason.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: It's like when these clown politicians get asked a question about economics and then bring up the opposition's family.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: It was like Kurt, that was not called for.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: That was a low blow.
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: So first, I think Ohio State and Oregon are your two top teams.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: I think Indiana almost has a has a national champion been this disrespected as Indiana.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: I feel like not enough people are talking about.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: I think they're going to be good.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: Again, I don't know if they're going to be national title good, but listen, Kurt Signetti is a dang wizard.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: But bringing him up, he's he's been yapping, but man, he's been backing it up.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: The Notre Dame comment.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: See, listen, I I I went semi-viral uh talking about scheduling and and playing home and homes and two for ones last about two weeks ago.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: So I don't want to be hypocritical.
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: However, in their just on their sense, like I understand what Signetti's saying.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: And this is the overarching problem of college football that there's no commissioner.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: So no one's telling these people, these programs, like what to play.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: So Signetti's ticked about that, and he's like, Yeah, we'll play them, but they got to play two over here because they have to play two of the academies and they're gonna play like five ACC schools.
- 45:35SPEAKER_00: So like I understand what he's saying.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: I I don't necessarily agree with it, but we need a commissioner and we need an algorithm to say, okay, this is everybody's schedules.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: So that it's fair.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: Because conferences are working like the Articles of Confederation.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: When this this is one of my favorite analogies I've used for years, is each conference is like an individual state right after they gained independence, of like they're operating like their own individual country with this larger collective, they're not united.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: So what are they doing?
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: They're doing things that are specifically going to help their conference, just like during the Articles of a Confederation, Pennsylvania's only gonna do what helps Pennsylvania.
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: They don't care what Massachusetts and New Jersey are doing, they only care about what's gonna help them there.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: So everyone's kind of you know doing what they want.
- 46:27SPEAKER_00: And that's how you get SEC having an eight-game schedule or an eight-game conference schedule for how many years.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: That's how Notre Dame can just say, yeah, we're gonna play like five ACC schools and then we'll figure the rest out.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: Which Notre Dame usually does a good job of like finding power five opponents.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: I don't want to take any shots there, but it's it's the overarching issue of we need a commissioner.
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: But yeah, Signetti's been yapping.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Signetti has certainly been talking a bit.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: And for the most part, I think he makes some decent points.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: I I don't want to come across as me calling him an idiot.
- 46:59SPEAKER_01: I think he's wise and we should probably listen to him more on some of these issues because he does want what's best for the sport, which not everyone can say the same thing.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: But yeah, just any overall semblance of structure from the NCAA down would be great.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: So I think next season we could try maybe just getting some structure with who's eligible to play, who's playing who, that sort of thing.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: Those are some pretty important questions we need answered.
- 47:22SPEAKER_01: So you think Indiana slot in third this year in the Big Ten?
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: What about outside of those big three?
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: Who are some other teams you're keeping on?
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: I know we have to have a state conversation soon.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna stick with USC.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 47:38SPEAKER_00: I really think this is gonna be their time to kind of break through.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: I they have a lot coming back, they have a great quarterback.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: Lincoln Riley is kind of feeling the heat a little bit to kind of get things done, but I I really like USC.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: I think this is a season we're gonna see them come back to uh a little bit closer to where they were a couple years ago.
- 47:56SPEAKER_01: That's interesting to me because I've always kind of written off Lincoln Riley in terms of getting to that mountaintop.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: I kind of think he's good at what he does, but it always flames out and it always has a ceiling.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: But I I would be interested for sure seeing a USC team in the playoff.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: I think that would be exciting for everybody.
- 48:13SPEAKER_01: So I hope you have a shot.
- 48:17SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to I'm trying to go to you into state cards.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know.
- 48:21SPEAKER_00: So next after USC, so it would be Penn State, Michigan, and Washington.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 48:31SPEAKER_00: I have no clue.
- 48:31SPEAKER_00: I know Washington has some stuff going on with uh Damon Williams.
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: Penn State has a bunch of dudes from Iowa State with that, you know, were pretty good last year with some nucleus of Penn State guys, and Penn State has a softer schedule this year, so a 10 and 2 Penn State could sneak in the playoff.
- 48:49SPEAKER_00: But I think the most intriguing one, and I've said intriguing a lot, is Michigan because I I'm not sure what's gonna happen with them.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: So for those of you who don't know, some bad things happen.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: Michigan kind of has to clean house with their staff.
- 49:06SPEAKER_00: Enter Kyle Winningham.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: Now, Kyle Winningham was forced out of Utah.
- 49:13SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 49:14SPEAKER_00: They felt that uh they kind of had the head coach in waiting with Scally.
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: I want to say Scally.
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: I'm blanking on the guy's name, but they felt like they had the head coach in waiting.
- 49:25SPEAKER_00: So they kind of force Winningham out.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: Winningham's like, I'm retired.
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: Now Michigan's opened.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: So he goes to Michigan.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: I think Kyle Whittingham is a good coach.
- 49:35SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: Um Michigan's returning a good chunk.
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: I think Wittingham, there's a high floor.
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: So they're not gonna be bad.
- 49:41SPEAKER_00: They're gonna be a well-coached group.
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: The problem is, and again, I know this is gonna be crazy because I'm talking about Utah, a place.
- 49:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's the winning, I believe he's the winningest coach at Utah.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: But man, there were games in that new Pac-12 where he was 100% better than the other team that I just scratched my head.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what are you doing?
- 50:02SPEAKER_00: You know, you know, other games where they kind of fall off towards the end.
- 50:08SPEAKER_00: So the thing is Winningham, good coach, high floor, a decently high floor.
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: I I I think the ceiling is low, but I think I mean Michigan goes 10 and 2, 9 and 3 wouldn't shock me.
- 50:25SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 50:25SPEAKER_00: I think Michigan, though, let me do a quick check here, Sean.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: I was curious about Michigan, Jake, because of Kyle Whittingham.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: I think my opinion on the situation would be they're going to be a much more stable group going forward.
- 50:40SPEAKER_01: And I think that might have been what they were looking for in their administration.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: It's just kind of like, hey, let's get a coach in that's not chasing co-eds around, and let's go we'll go from there.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: I think that's the most important thing.
- 50:51SPEAKER_01: And I think we we can safely say Kyle Winningham is past the age of chasing co-eds around.
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: So say we Yeah, he's a family man.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: He's yeah, good guy.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: Good guy.
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: Not threat for that particular wrongdoing.
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: So here's Michigan's problem, and I I thought this was correct.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: Their schedule is tough, man.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: So they they play Oklahoma, it is at home.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: Listen, Iowa is is never a gimme at Minnesota for the little brown jug, Penn State at home, uh, but Indiana, and then they have Oregon and Ohio State.
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: So they have to play the top three teams plus Iowa plus Penn State.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: It's a tough schedule.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: And then you throw Michigan State in the middle, which that, you know, for Paul Bunyan's usually crazy.
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: So Michigan having a tough schedule, I think, is going to hurt them in the end.
- 51:42SPEAKER_00: However, I do agree with you.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: I think they're going to be more stable.
- 51:47SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they're I don't know if they're going to reach the pinnacle like Harbaugh did though.
- 51:53SPEAKER_00: I think they have a 10 and 2 ceiling, but their floor is going to be raised.
- 51:58SPEAKER_01: And I think maybe coming off the back of the the cheating scandal and then the coach scandal, that might be what they need is just a couple years of hey, hey, we're not going to implode, you know.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: And they can kind of try to write the ship.
- 52:12SPEAKER_01: Jake, let's move on to the other big conference in the sport.
- 52:15SPEAKER_01: I would say now it is definitely second fiddle.
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: I I mean there's no debating the merits of the SEC versus the Big Ten over the course of the last few seasons.
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: The SEC is now second.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: They're trying to get back to that mountaintop.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: I am not so sure that this is going to be the year they do it, but who are you looking at as some of the best teams in the SEC?
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: I I think this might be Georgia's year to get the SEC back to a national title.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: I love Georgia.
- 52:40SPEAKER_00: Listen, Georgia's kind of been under the radar.
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, a lot of talk about Texas.
- 52:44SPEAKER_00: You got Lane Gambling and LSD.
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: They are never under the radar gun.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: That's a good one, Sean.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: That's a good one.
- 52:54SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I really like Georgia.
- 52:58SPEAKER_00: I think they are the team still to be beat in the SEC.
- 53:02SPEAKER_00: And listen, they're a team that, again, is under the radar.
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: Everyone's talking about Texas in the SEC, you know, Lane Kiffin and LSU.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: So I really like Georgia.
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: We talked about Texas already.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: We we kind of know my thoughts there.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, same thing with LSU.
- 53:17SPEAKER_00: Oklahoma, I think, is a dark horse.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: If John Mateer can get back into form, I I their defense should be good.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: That I think the Sooners are a team to kind of watch out for.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: The other team, Sean, Alabama.
- 53:35SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about Bama for a second.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: Not returning a whole bunch of returning production.
- 53:41SPEAKER_00: Like ranked 40th in transfers was again if they don't got the dudes waiting, I don't know what's gonna happen.
- 53:52SPEAKER_00: Because I know everyone's saying they'll go 10 and 2 at least, 10 and 2.
- 53:56SPEAKER_00: What if they don't?
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: What if they go 9 and 3 again?
- 54:00SPEAKER_00: What if they go you know 9 and 3?
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: What if they go 8 and 4?
- 54:04SPEAKER_00: And man, if they do, these these southerners, these people from Alabama, they're when the chips are down, they will eat each other.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 54:16SPEAKER_00: Like, like Kalen Debore is a dead man walking if they go eight and four, nine and three, um, because these people have been spoiled for you know how long.
- 54:26SPEAKER_00: Um, but Alabama's a team that I'm really gonna keep my eye on, but not for the right reasons.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: It's the Sherlock Holmes Magnifying Glass.
- 54:34SPEAKER_01: I'm watching them too, because I think that's an interesting, interesting situation developing down there.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: And I am kind of picking up the same feelings you are on the situation.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's I don't think it's rosy for the Crimson Tide.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: I do like what you said about Oklahoma.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: I'm kind of in on Oklahoma.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: I was in on them last year.
- 54:53SPEAKER_01: I think that I just really like teams where I know the defense is going to be good.
- 54:58SPEAKER_01: And with Brent Venables, you kind of just know the defense is going to be good.
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: I'm very concerned about what we what we're gonna get from John Matir.
- 55:04SPEAKER_01: I've seen some training camp photos, Jake.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: He looks absolutely jacked, which is not how you want your quarterback looking.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: You want your quarterback to be in shape, but you don't want his biceps to be the talk of the town.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: It appears the talk of Norman Oklahoma is the biceps of John Matir, which could be a problem.
- 55:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I again I'm I'm not a I'm not a biology guy, but I don't think biceps throw the football.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: No, I don't I don't think so either.
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't think I don't think they use but I don't think it's I don't think it's local.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: Biceps, they're glamour muscles.
- 55:35SPEAKER_00: They they don't do anything, they're just for show.
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so put a t-shirt on, John, and maybe throw the ball downfield a little bit, but I am bullish on Oklahoma this season.
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: I think that's all.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: Is there any dark horses in the SEC you want to point out?
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: I think Oklahoma's really my dark horse.
- 55:48SPEAKER_00: I again are they the dark horse?
- 55:50SPEAKER_00: Because I think I mean they're ranked decently high.
- 55:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're 10th.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: They're 10th.
- 55:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, I guess they're just a dark horse just because, you know, after the, you know, Georgia being, you know, consistent national champions, you have Texas returning a bunch.
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: Uh you have the circus going on at LSU that Oklahoma's kind of been an afterthought in the SEC.
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: Let's move on then to anywhere else in the country, Jake.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: Anywhere you want to take me, I'm willing to listen.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: It could be a player, it could be a team.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: Who else should we we be keeping our eyes on?
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: Well, let's go to the Big 12.
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: One of the most fun conferences to follow because it's a uh crapshoot.
- 56:29SPEAKER_00: Um, but Texas Tech is the team to be in the Big 12.
- 56:33SPEAKER_00: Last year, they were kind of like the Indiana of 2024.
- 56:37SPEAKER_00: Like breaks, kind of breaks through, kind of gets embarrassed in the playoff game.
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: So I'm interested to see there.
- 56:43SPEAKER_00: Listen, they got some money, and Joey McGuire is a great coach down there in Texas Tech.
- 56:48SPEAKER_00: BYU's a team to kind of watch.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: They have a good group coming back on defense.
- 56:53SPEAKER_00: They have Bear back as a quarterback.
- 56:56SPEAKER_00: If he can kind of start slinging a little bit better.
- 56:59SPEAKER_00: If you want to go to the ACC, it's Miami.
- 57:02SPEAKER_00: They're the favorite.
- 57:02SPEAKER_00: Malachi Tony Sean, one of the most electric players in all of college football.
- 57:09SPEAKER_00: I mean, awesome.
- 57:10SPEAKER_00: And here's the thing with Miami, because in the ACC, I think it's Miami's turn.
- 57:14SPEAKER_00: Uh Clemson, I think their time's done.
- 57:16SPEAKER_00: It's kind of the the game, I looks like it's kind of passed abo by.
- 57:21SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing with Miami.
- 57:23SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: I think the game has passed double by quickly.
- 57:26SPEAKER_01: And I don't even know if we've realized yet.
- 57:29SPEAKER_01: No.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:31SPEAKER_00: Like, here's the deal.
- 57:34SPEAKER_00: Mario Christopher, what he did at Miami last year should be commendable.
- 57:38SPEAKER_00: It really, really should.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: But again, almost like Sark has another coach, like, again, against teams that he's more talented than just choke games away like he does.
- 57:53SPEAKER_00: Like, yes, he got them to play, like they played very well down the stretch and hope maybe that is who they're going to be.
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: But those first years of Miami, man, like that Georgia tech game was malpractice, you know?
- 58:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 58:08SPEAKER_00: Like, like when he was at Oregon, he was which feels like a lifetime ago, by the way.
- 58:15SPEAKER_02: It feels old.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: They were losing games they weren't supposed to.
- 58:19SPEAKER_00: Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, I don't know.
- 58:22SPEAKER_00: So you gotta look at Miami.
- 58:24SPEAKER_00: If you want to look at players, I think a very interesting one.
- 58:27SPEAKER_00: Uh Darien Mensah from Duke is gonna be quarterback of Miami.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: I think that's a guy to really, you know, take a look at.
- 58:34SPEAKER_00: And is he gonna be better than Carson Bent?
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: But like I said earlier, Louisville, good nucleus.
- 58:40SPEAKER_00: The guy is coming back.
- 58:41SPEAKER_00: Really only two tough games on the schedule.
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: I think that's a team to watch out for.
- 58:44SPEAKER_00: Dark horse sneak into the playoff.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: There's one other ACC team I wanted to ask you about because you're pretty familiar with them.
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: What do you think we're gonna get from Virginia Tech this year?
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: I thought you were gonna ask me about the Pitt Panthers.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 58:57SPEAKER_01: I'm not trying to get in on that viral moment.
- 59:01SPEAKER_01: No, thank you.
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: Virginia Tech.
- 59:04SPEAKER_00: Listen, here's the thing.
- 59:05SPEAKER_00: Uh James Franklin and Kyle Whittingham, I think are very similar.
- 59:09SPEAKER_00: I think Virginia, I think he will raise the floor at Virginia Tech.
- 59:14SPEAKER_00: Um, I think they'll have a decent team next year.
- 59:16SPEAKER_00: I think they go eight and four.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: I think the big thing with James Franklin, though, is, and this is what I always said with him at Penn State, what he recruits is what he puts on the field.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think I've said it before on this show.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, when he was at Penn State, he averaged a 14th ranked recruiting class.
- 59:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, where does Penn State usually finish?
- 59:34SPEAKER_00: Well, between about, you know, usually like eight to twelve is usually where they finish.
- 59:40SPEAKER_00: So, right where he recruits is what he puts out on the field.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: I think luckily for him in in these coming years, I think the only team that's gonna be really more talented than Virginia Tech, again, not this year, but in the coming years, yeah, is going to be like a Miami, maybe a Clemson.
- 59:59SPEAKER_00: But those teams are not gonna be the juggernauts he saw in the Big Ten.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: They're not gonna be like how Ohio State was.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_00: They're not going to be like how those Michigan teams, a couple of those Michigan teams were.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: So I think it's a match made in heaven.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_00: Listen, Sean, you should know who's the legendary coach out of Virginia Tech?
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, his son's the coach at South Carolina.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: Uh hold on, don't tell me.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: I know this.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, he's a special team.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: Beamer, beamer ball.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_00: Beamer, beamer ball! Frank Beamer.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_00: How many games?
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: Now, Frank Beamer had some good teams at Virginia Tech when we were kids.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: Always a trick on the loved it.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_00: How many, how many top five games did Frank Beamer win?
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_01: Based on the framing of this, I'm gonna assume it's not many.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say four.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: One! What?
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_00: It's like one for like 20-some.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_00: So to get James Franklin in there, who is going to recruit well, should is gonna beat the teams he should be regularly, probably about 85% clip.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: And then you're also playing teams that aren't really like juggernauts like some of the teams you faced before in the Big Ten.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_00: I think this is a match made in heaven.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_00: I really do.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_00: If if he as long as he keeps recruiting at a decent rate, they're gonna be good.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_00: Do I think Virginia Tech's gonna win a national title?
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_00: Absolutely not.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: Are they going to be consistently good?
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_00: And are their fans going to be like, finally, we're back to fun football?
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: Until until they keep knocking on the door and they are not getting over the hump, and then he's gonna go somewhere else.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_01: James Beamer, Jim Beam.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's right there.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_01: It's right there.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_01: It's it's perfect.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't hate that comparison at all.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_01: And I do think, I mean, that's a good place to be, honestly, for a program that hasn't been in that picture since Frank Beamer.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_01: I think it's a great thing for James Franklin if he's able to do exactly what you just said.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_01: Come in, restore order, become that second or third best team in your conference, win close to 10 games every season, and then we'll see ultimately if he's able to stop knocking on the door and kick through the door.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_01: I think we know the answer to that.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: He's not.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_01: But I don't think there's any shame.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_01: I don't think there's any shame in winning 10 games a season.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_00: No, it listen, man, he's he's a good coach.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_00: He is, he's a good coach.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_00: I I think people that say he's a bad coach, I think are out of touch.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_00: I've said that on here when he was fired.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_00: He's a good coach, he's a good program builder.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: I do think he has a ceiling, but a Virginia Tech, and I'm sorry, but in the ACC, he might be able to kind of get away with it.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, and the other thing is if he keeps winning on his average, if he keeps winning nine games a year, he's going into the College Football Hall of Fame.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_00: So, like, how bad would he be?
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_00: He'd be eligible.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's not that bad.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_00: You know, no, he's not and another caveat because I don't know if you know this.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_00: Brent Pry was fired by Virginia Tech.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_00: Uh James Franklin got him to come back as defensive coordinator.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable turn of fate there.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_01: That is crazy to me.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_01: I I did know this.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: I have some friends down at Virginia Tech, so I'm I'm rooting for them.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: Listen, James Franklin's out of state college.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_01: I'm all in.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: Go on, James.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_01: It was just a Penn State thing for me.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_01: But that is shocking.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_01: I don't how often does that?
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: That can't happen often, right?
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_00: Doesn't happen often.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm sure it has happened, but I think there was an I want to say Mississippi State did something similar to that uh not too long ago, but I think that had to do with Arnette was like the interim.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_00: I forget if if that's true.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_00: Were Virginia Tech fans happy about this?
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_01: Or like were they wrong?
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, they are.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_00: No, they did because Brent Pry is a good man.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_00: Like Virginia when he when he when he was fired, Virginia Tech fans were like, sorry, it's just not working out.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_00: It's not it's it's not me, it's you.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: Like it's like we've all been there.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_00: They all they like they love Brent Pry.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_00: Listen, Brent Pry at his early stages of of his career was at Virginia Tech.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_00: So like he has connection to it.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_00: So the fans were like, it just didn't work out.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_00: We're sorry, we love you, but we're sorry.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_00: So to see him come back as defensive coordinator, I think people loved it, and it would keep it probably kept the program intact for transfers.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it couldn't it couldn't have hurt it.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_00: No, because again, he's a great guy.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, everything I've heard, like he's a great guy.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_00: And when they brought him back, they're like, okay, this is a guy who loves the program, was a good coordinator when he was with James Franklin at Penn State.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's it's a very unique situation.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_00: But I think Virginia Tech, I think this is the beginning for them to start building again uh their once great program.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_01: I'm excited about that.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_01: That's a good a good way to tie a bow on the main portion of our show, Jake.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_01: I've got one final thing for you.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_01: It is some rapid fire questions.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_01: You are not prepared for these ahead of time.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_01: So this is coming straight from the gut.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_01: Nothing you say will be held against you.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_01: This is not one of this is not a courtroom.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_01: So you're not going to perjure yourself here.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_01: Rapid fire.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_01: Try to answer as quickly and concise as concisely as you can.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: At this time next year, is Bill Belichick the coach at UNC?
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_01: Does he make it through this season?
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_00: They might let him.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_00: I don't think he's gonna be fired.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_00: I think he'll resign.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_01: Midseason.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_00: So you think he does not see that's the I want to I think it's too much, I think it's too much of a disaster.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_01: That's another one that's gonna go tits up quick.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: I agree with you.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: Okay, better season.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_01: I think I know we're gonna go with this, I'm gonna hate it, but I have to ask about my Kentucky Wildcats.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_01: Better season relative to expectations, Kentucky or Louisville.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_01: Now keep in mind, Louisville's preseason top twenty five, though.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: It's a lot bigger expectation.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_00: Sorry, it's still gonna be Louisville.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_00: Kentucky's I'm sorry, Sean, Kentucky.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_00: Kentucky's gonna be bad.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_01: Okay, you think they're gonna be bad?
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_01: That's tough.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: I I like Will Stein though.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: I like him.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_01: I like him.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_01: I love this year.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_01: Not this year.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_01: Not this year.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_01: If there are okay, is there any moment during the season that Penn State fans start to doubt the Matt Campbell hire?
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_00: Is there a it's already happening?
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_01: No, but I'm talking about the educated ones.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_01: Not not yeah.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_01: Not the not the hang-ons.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_00: Not the uh the weekend.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_00: Not the burners.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_00: Not the burner accounts.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_01: So if let's say I think it's a good question.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_01: I I don't think it's an overreaction question where you you want them fired or something.
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_00: Let's say they if they end the year like seven and five.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_00: A little bit of doubt?
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_00: There's gonna be there there's gonna be there's gonna be some big time doubt.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: If they go eight and four, I think a little bit.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_01: A little bit.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_00: I think nine and three, everyone's like, this is gonna we're gonna be okay.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_00: Listen, I'm can I be honest with some can I be honest with you?
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_00: Trust tree.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're in the trust tree.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm more worried about next year.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_00: Because like I I I I think they should have a I I don't think I'm more worried about next year than this year.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_00: I think this year, I think they're gonna be more talented.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_00: I'm worried about next year.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_00: But anyway.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_01: That's what we were hoping for there.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_01: Best team outside of the power four.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_01: So best team not in the Big Ten, the SEC, the ACC, or the Big 12.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_01: You could also say most fun team, or just a team that you want us to know about.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh this is gonna be such a cop out.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_00: I think Boise State gets back to be in Boise State this year.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_01: I can get behind that.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_01: I always like to.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_00: It all comes down to Madsen at quarterback.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_00: Is Madsen gonna be better?
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_01: Now, Jake, we've we touched on this, but I had this, this was natural.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_01: I had this prepared before the show, and naturally somehow we were like kindred spirits on this.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_01: It came up in conversation.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_01: Do either Kaylin DeBore or Steve Sarkeesian get fired this season?
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_00: No, because I believe their buyouts are too big.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, so you think basically next year, but it's they're both the seats could be hot.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_00: I think how about this?
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna I'll rewire your question.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_00: Who's gonna have the hottest seat at the end of the year?
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be Kalen De Boer, because I think they're gonna go eight and I I'm predicting that good, they go eight and four.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_01: So you think Sarkeesian lasts a little bit longer than Debor does?
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_01: Sarkeesian could even have a good year and save himself.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_00: I think Sarkeesian is I think Texas is primed to have a good year.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_00: I just don't know if they're gonna be elite.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_00: I I am selling stock on Alabama right now.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've called him Kalen De Bohring.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_01: He just doesn't excite me.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_01: I I think he might be a nice guy.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know much about it.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_01: I think he is too.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_01: I just it just seems unfit for the job he's currently in.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: That's just my opinion.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_01: He looks a bit out of his depth on the sidelines, is my thing.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_01: It's a lose lose.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_01: See Alabama and that crimson, you're like, oh, here we go.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_01: You're up for it.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_01: We're saving.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_01: Oh no, it's this guy, and this guy doesn't exude confidence.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_00: No, again, I mean, listen, he was working against again, he he took over after the greatest coach of college football.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_00: You know, he took over after that man retired because he probably couldn't pay players under the table and everything was equal, and the players had more say, and I don't love the free agency, and I understand why he didn't want to do that.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_00: But listen, things were getting a little harder for Nikki down in Tuscaloosa, so he's like, I think it's time for me to retire.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_00: And now I'm gonna go on game day, and everyone's gonna think, oh, look, he's like my grandpa.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_00: No, he's still an arrogant curmudgeon and he ruined the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_01: That's really why Jake hates him.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_01: That's that's good.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_01: I also think that Miss Terry, his wife, I hate to take familial shots here.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_01: I I'm sick of her too, because it's always like, oh, she's perfect.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_01: Miss Terry won't let me.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_01: Like, if he if he's ever straying offline or there's something he could have done wrong, he would say, he would say, You think Miss Terry let me pay those players?
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do think Miss Terry.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: I think Miss Terry liked the winner, okay, Nick.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_01: I think she liked winning.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_00: Is that crazy?
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_00: He hides behind his wife.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, acts like a tough guy and hides behind his wife.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, he's that friend that's like, oh no, I'm sorry, I can't come out.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_00: My wife told me I'm not allowed to.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just pinning it all over.
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_00: And then she's sitting there on she's sitting there on game day.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_00: Like, what's she gonna tell me?
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_00: Get out of here.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_01: I'd like to strap Miss Terry, Miss Terry to a lie detector, is what I would like.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yes.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_00: I think I think respectfully, respectfully to Miss Terry.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_00: This is about her husband, but yes, I would like to see her in a lie detector.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_00: I'd like to see what's not nothing personal, Miss Terry.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_01: What she really feels.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_01: It could be anybody.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_01: But the last question, Jake, in the rapid fire, which went a little off, of course, a little off course.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_01: Who wins the Heisman Trophy?
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_00: Oh man, not that I will uh just who wins it.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_00: I know, I know.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_00: Uh so this is this is an area that I don't get involved too much in.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_00: I I'm not a big Heisman talk guy.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_00: That's one area that Jay and I really don't get into.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_00: But you know what?
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_00: Give me, I'm gonna go with my dark horse pick of Jada Maiava.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_00: I I I really I'm really buying USC this year.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_00: I think he's gonna be a new name, but yeah, give me because it's a more of a quarterback award.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_00: I'd love to see say Jeremiah Smith, I'd love to say Malachi Tony, but this is a quarterback award, and if USC is getting back into the fold, I think that's your guy.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_00: And he's gonna put up numbers.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_00: He's gonna put up numbers.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_01: I like the pick.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_01: And honestly, I wasn't thinking of him before you came on, so I appreciate that.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_01: I did give you the opportunity.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_01: Uh I was in all of branch of sorts to really reunite with that Notre Dame fan base and just get behind CJ Carr.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_01: So do you want me to say why?
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: I'd clip that right up and merry way in Notre Dame.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: This is why CJ Carr won't win the Heisman.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_00: I don't think you'll have the stats to do it.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_00: I think he's gonna be a good, very good quarterback, but listen, Notre Dame isn't they're they're not gonna put up crazy stats, but they're gonna win football games.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_00: And I think that's what's gonna keep CJ Carr out of that Heisman, that Heisman trophy race.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_01: Well Myava could win games, but also will put up stats, that makes sense.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh Myava might lose probably lose more games.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_00: Myava could probably go 9-3, but if his stats are out of this world and USC is back to being, you know, a contender, he's probably gonna get the nod over a 10-2 Notre Dame quarterback who is winning ball games but isn't doesn't have the stats.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_01: Also, before we go, how did Michigan let Lloyd Carr's grandson go to Notre Dame?
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_01: And I think his brother's on Michigan, but his brother's just not as good.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I forget.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_00: Listen, Notre Dame still got a little bit of money.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they got a little bit, but I'm not sure.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know if Harbaugh leaving did anything.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_00: I I that is a story that I'm that I'm not sure about.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_01: Well, Jake, anything else before we go?
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_00: No, listen, I'm just excited for college football to be here.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm going to uh this weekend I'm gonna sit on my couch and from about 10 o'clock watch a bunch of preview stuff, and I'll be I won't be going to sleep until Memphis and UNLV is over.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_01: That's a true grinder.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_01: That's why we have them on, folks.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_01: No, nobody more committed than he.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_01: I will say it is a week too early for me.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: You're not gonna get my attention yet.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_01: College football, I still need some time.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: I'm in off-season shape.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_01: We've got a big bad football season coming up, and I'm not prepared for it.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_01: This did help get me in the mood, though.
