- 0:17Speaker 1: appreciate PrizePix for all their support. Well, guys, a week ago,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Florida fans were trying to figure out what had gone
- 0:25Speaker 1: wrong with this football team. The Gators had suffered back-to-back
- 0:28Speaker 1: embarrassing losses, the offense wasn't producing, the defense couldn't stop anybody,
- 0:33Speaker 1: and there were serious questions about where this season was headed.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Fast forward a week, and Florida just knocked off the
- 0:38Speaker 1: seventh-ranked team in the country on the road with its
- 0:41Speaker 1: backup quarterback making his first career start. And now suddenly
- 0:45Speaker 1: there is a completely different question surrounding this program. Does
- 0:49Speaker 1: Florida have a quarterback controversy? Tramell Jones didn't just step
- 0:53Speaker 1: in and manage a football game against Texas. He helped
- 0:56Speaker 1: lead Florida back from a 17-3 deficit through two touchdown
- 1:00Speaker 1: passes and didn't turn the football over. And, most importantly,
- 1:05Speaker 1: walked out of Austin with one of the biggest wins
- 1:07Speaker 1: of Coach Summerall's young Florida career. Meanwhile, Aaron Filo, the
- 1:11Speaker 1: quarterback who won the starting job in fall camp and
- 1:14Speaker 1: helped Florida get to a 4-0 start, was watching from
- 1:18Speaker 1: the sidelines with a shoulder injury. So supportive of his teammate, though.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I feel like necessary to say so cool that every
- 1:25Speaker 1: time Trammell came off the field, Philo was right there
- 1:28Speaker 1: with him to encourage him, to support him. Really cool
- 1:31Speaker 1: to watch their friendship on full display. So what happens next?
- 1:35Speaker 1: When Philo is healthy, does he automatically get his job back?
- 1:39Speaker 1: Has Trammell earned the opportunity to start against Georgia? Or
- 1:42Speaker 1: are we overreacting to what was a really impressive performance
- 1:46Speaker 1: but won? I think that this is a much more
- 1:49Speaker 1: complicated conversation than people want to make it. And today
- 1:51Speaker 1: we're going to break it down, talk about what we
- 1:54Speaker 1: learned against Texas, what the numbers tell us, and what
- 1:57Speaker 1: I think John Summerall should do coming out of the
- 1:59Speaker 1: bye week. First, I think it's important to remember something
- 2:02Speaker 1: that seems to have gotten lost over the last couple
- 2:04Speaker 1: of weeks. Aaron Filo did not have the starting job
- 2:08Speaker 1: handed to him. He earned it. Florida went through an
- 2:11Speaker 1: entire offseason with a legitimate quarterback competition between Philo and Jones.
- 2:15Speaker 1: And by all accounts, that competition was a lot closer
- 2:18Speaker 1: than many people realized. Sarmal made it very clear through
- 2:21Speaker 1: the spring and the summer that both quarterbacks were capable
- 2:24Speaker 1: of leading this football team. But Philo had an advantage.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He did follow offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So he had familiarity operating this offense. He understood the
- 2:34Speaker 1: terminology and the system, the pre-snap responsibilities, and what Faulkner
- 2:39Speaker 1: wanted from the quarterback position. And ultimately, that experience helped
- 2:43Speaker 1: him win the job. But here's something I think is important.
- 2:46Speaker 1: When Summerall named Philo the starter in August, he didn't
- 2:49Speaker 1: say the competition was over forever. In fact, he already
- 2:52Speaker 1: made that point during SEC media days that just because
- 2:55Speaker 1: somebody starts the first game doesn't necessarily mean they're going
- 2:58Speaker 1: to start the last game. And at the time, maybe
- 3:01Speaker 1: we took that as coach speak, but now it sounds
- 3:04Speaker 1: pretty relevant. Jones didn't lose the competition because the coaching
- 3:07Speaker 1: staff thought he couldn't play. He lost to a guy
- 3:10Speaker 1: who had a better command of the offense at that
- 3:12Speaker 1: point in time. And I think there's a difference there. Now,
- 3:16Speaker 1: before we crown Tramell Jones as Florida's new starting quarterback,
- 3:19Speaker 1: let's look at what Aaron Filo accomplished. Through six games,
- 3:22Speaker 1: Filo completed 105 of 149 passes. That is 70.5%. He
- 3:29Speaker 1: threw for 1,341 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. And
- 3:32Speaker 1: he added three rushing touchdowns. He was among the SEC
- 3:36Speaker 1: leaders in completion percentage and yards per attempt. And during
- 3:40Speaker 1: Florida's first four games, the Gators were averaging more than
- 3:42Speaker 1: 53 points per game. Those are impressive numbers. They're pretty
- 3:47Speaker 1: darn good. And remember, Florida didn't start the season 4-0
- 3:51Speaker 1: against four meaningless opponents. The Gators beat Auburn on the road.
- 3:55Speaker 1: That win's looking real nice after Auburn picked off Georgia.
- 3:58Speaker 1: And then they absolutely dismantled a top five Ole Miss team,
- 4:01Speaker 1: putting up 52 points in that game. By the way,
- 4:03Speaker 1: that win looks pretty great too, as Ole Miss only
- 4:06Speaker 1: has that one loss and they've been on a roll since.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Philo was running an offense that looked efficient, balanced, and
- 4:13Speaker 1: extremely difficult to defend. Now, did things change against Missouri
- 4:17Speaker 1: and South Carolina? Absolutely. The offense went from looking like
- 4:20Speaker 1: one of the best in the SEC to struggling to
- 4:22Speaker 1: establish any kind of identity or consistency. Florida scored just
- 4:27Speaker 1: 17 points against Missouri and 19 against South Carolina. Philo
- 4:30Speaker 1: had some mistakes. The turnovers became a little bit of
- 4:33Speaker 1: an issue, even though I wouldn't put those interceptions on him.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And there were some plays where he needed to make
- 4:38Speaker 1: better decisions. But here's where I think we have to
- 4:40Speaker 1: be careful. I don't think that many of Florida's offensive
- 4:45Speaker 1: struggles are Philo's fault. The offensive line was getting beat.
- 4:50Speaker 1: The running game had practically disappeared. Jaden Baugh, who had
- 4:52Speaker 1: rushed for over 600 yards during the first four games,
- 4:55Speaker 1: managed just 72 yards combined against Missouri and South Carolina.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Think about that. When your running game goes from being
- 5:01Speaker 1: the foundation of your offense to practically non-existent, you are
- 5:05Speaker 1: asking a lot more from your quarterback. And Florida was
- 5:07Speaker 1: also dealing with injuries to some really important playmakers. VB3
- 5:11Speaker 1: has missed time, Singleton wasn't healthy, and suddenly the offense
- 5:14Speaker 1: has looked less dangerous than it did in September. That's
- 5:19Speaker 1: not an excuse for every mistake Philo has made. I
- 5:21Speaker 1: don't think it's fair to put the offensive problems on
- 5:24Speaker 1: him either, though. And John Summerow and Buster Faulkner have
- 5:28Speaker 1: both made that point publicly. Philo wasn't perfect, but he
- 5:31Speaker 1: also wasn't the problem. Now let's talk about Tramell Jones,
- 5:35Speaker 1: because I think what impressed me against Texas wasn't necessarily
- 5:38Speaker 1: the numbers. The numbers were very average, but it was
- 5:41Speaker 1: the situation. Here's a quarterback making his first career start.
- 5:45Speaker 1: He's on the road against the seventh-ranked team in the country.
- 5:48Speaker 1: He's playing in front of more than 100,000 people. Florida
- 5:51Speaker 1: is coming off two ugly losses, and the pressure on
- 5:53Speaker 1: this program is enormous. And then the game starts. Texas
- 5:57Speaker 1: jumps out to a 10-0 lead. Florida gets on board
- 6:00Speaker 1: with a field goal, but then they give up a
- 6:02Speaker 1: 63-yard punt return for a touchdown, and suddenly it's 17-3.
- 6:06Speaker 1: At that point, how many people honestly believed Florida was
- 6:10Speaker 1: going to win that football game? And how easy would
- 6:14Speaker 1: it have been for a young quarterback making his first
- 6:16Speaker 1: start to try to do too much, to start forcing throws,
- 6:20Speaker 1: getting impatient, trying to make some heroic play to get
- 6:23Speaker 1: his team back into the game? Jones didn't do that.
- 6:27Speaker 1: He stayed with the offense. He continued to take what
- 6:29Speaker 1: Florida was giving him. And when Florida finally had an
- 6:33Speaker 1: opportunity late in the first half, he delivered. With 18
- 6:36Speaker 1: seconds remaining before halftime, Jones connected with tight end Lakata
- 6:39Speaker 1: Dupree for a touchdown that cut the deficit to seven points.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And then Florida came out of locker room and put
- 6:45Speaker 1: together one of the most impressive drives of the season.
- 6:47Speaker 1: 15 plays, 69 yards, eight minutes and three seconds off
- 6:51Speaker 1: the clock. and then another touchdown pass from Jones to Dupree.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And just like that, the game was tied at 17.
- 6:57Speaker 1: And I think that's where Jones deserves a ton of credit.
- 7:01Speaker 1: He didn't panic when the game was going badly. He
- 7:04Speaker 1: didn't abandon the play. He stuck with the plan. He
- 7:09Speaker 1: stayed composed. He continued to execute, and he gave his
- 7:12Speaker 1: team a chance to come back. Florida ultimately scored 24
- 7:15Speaker 1: unanswered points to take a 27-17 lead before holding on
- 7:19Speaker 1: for the 27-24 victory. Jones finished 22 of 35, 155 yards,
- 7:24Speaker 1: two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Now, obviously, 155 passing yards
- 7:28Speaker 1: isn't going to jump off the stat sheet. And I'm
- 7:31Speaker 1: not going to sit here and pretend like Jones suddenly
- 7:33Speaker 1: looks like an All-American quarterback. Florida didn't win because Jones
- 7:36Speaker 1: was throwing 50-yard touchdowns all over the field. They won
- 7:39Speaker 1: because he helped the offense stay on the field. He
- 7:42Speaker 1: avoided the mistakes that could have buried them, and he
- 7:45Speaker 1: executed in critical situations. Florida possessed the football for more
- 7:49Speaker 1: than 38 minutes. the Gators converted eight third downs, picked
- 7:53Speaker 1: up 21 first downs, and controlled large portions of that
- 7:57Speaker 1: second half. And Jones played an important role in making
- 8:00Speaker 1: that happen. Sometimes the most impressive thing a quarterback can
- 8:03Speaker 1: do is understand exactly what the game requires of him.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And that's what I saw from Tramell Jones against Texas.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Now I want to take a second and tell you
- 8:12Speaker 1: about a new audio option that we have. If you
- 8:14Speaker 1: listen to Apple Podcasts or Spotify or A peek inside
- 8:19Speaker 1: Gator football is now on there. You guys have asked
- 8:21Speaker 1: for an audio only option. So we are delivering for you.
- 8:24Speaker 1: If there's another platform we should be on, let us
- 8:26Speaker 1: know down in the comments and guys, make sure that
- 8:29Speaker 1: you are subscribed over there because I've been dropping immediate
- 8:32Speaker 1: reactions to these games over on the audio platforms only.
- 8:35Speaker 1: So if you want to check that out, make sure
- 8:37Speaker 1: you're subscribed. Okay. So now here's where the conversation gets
- 8:40Speaker 1: really interesting. The question isn't necessarily whether Tramell Jones played
- 8:44Speaker 1: better against Texas than Aaron Filo played against Missouri or
- 8:47Speaker 1: South Carolina. think that's obvious. The more important question is
- 8:51Speaker 1: whether Jones brings something different to Florida's offense that could
- 8:54Speaker 1: help this football team moving forward, and I do think
- 8:57Speaker 1: that there is an argument that he does. The biggest
- 9:00Speaker 1: thing that stood out to me was his composure. There
- 9:02Speaker 1: were certainly times earlier this season when Philo looked very
- 9:05Speaker 1: comfortable operating Faulkner's offense, but against Missouri and South Carolina,
- 9:09Speaker 1: that comfort level seemed to disappear. Now, let's be fair.
- 9:13Speaker 1: The offensive line struggled, the running game wasn't there, and
- 9:15Speaker 1: Philo sometimes looked like he was trying to make something
- 9:18Speaker 1: happen when nothing was available. Jones, on the other hand,
- 9:21Speaker 1: appeared perfectly content taking the short completion, moving the chains,
- 9:24Speaker 1: letting the running backs do their job, but the offensive
- 9:27Speaker 1: line was working. And that is a huge part of
- 9:31Speaker 1: all of this. And that defense also helped win the
- 9:35Speaker 1: football game. So I don't think all of this necessarily
- 9:39Speaker 1: means that Jones makes better decisions than Fiala overall. We're
- 9:42Speaker 1: comparing one start against six, and that's a pretty small
- 9:45Speaker 1: sample size. But there is something to be said for
- 9:47Speaker 1: the way Florida's offense functioned with Jones against Texas. There
- 9:50Speaker 1: was patience, there was discipline, and there seemed to be
- 9:53Speaker 1: a pretty good understanding between Jones and Faulkner about what
- 9:55Speaker 1: the offense needed to accomplish. But here's the other side.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Jones averaged just four yards per pass attempt. He didn't
- 10:01Speaker 1: stretch the field much, and Florida's longest completion was only
- 10:04Speaker 1: 17 yards. That's a concern, because as well as Florida
- 10:08Speaker 1: controlled the football against Texas, the Gators can't consistently win
- 10:13Speaker 1: games against better SEC opponents without generating explosive plays through
- 10:16Speaker 1: the passing game. At least I don't think they can.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And that's where Philo has demonstrated a different ability. Through
- 10:22Speaker 1: six games, he was averaging nine yards per pass attempt.
- 10:25Speaker 1: He has shown he can push the football downfield and
- 10:27Speaker 1: make plays beyond the short passing game. So if you're
- 10:30Speaker 1: asking me whether Jones showed enough against Texas to prove
- 10:33Speaker 1: he's clearly the better quarterback, no. But he did show
- 10:36Speaker 1: enough that this should be a legitimate competition again. And
- 10:41Speaker 1: I do think that Jones has the ability to go downfield.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I just don't think we saw it executed successfully on Saturday,
- 10:48Speaker 1: but that doesn't mean that that's not a tool in
- 10:49Speaker 1: his toolbox. And here's another piece of this that I
- 10:52Speaker 1: think deserves some attention. Florida didn't just get better quarterback
- 10:56Speaker 1: play against Texas. The entire team played better. The offense
- 10:59Speaker 1: was dramatically improved. The offensive approach was different. The Gators
- 11:03Speaker 1: committed to controlling possession, and they played complementary football. And
- 11:07Speaker 1: Buster Faulkner deserves some credit for putting Jones in situations
- 11:10Speaker 1: where he could succeed. Let's remember, Texas entered the game
- 11:13Speaker 1: with one of the country's best defenses. This wasn't Jones
- 11:16Speaker 1: getting his first start against an overmatched opponent. And yet
- 11:19Speaker 1: Florida was able to put together long, sustained drives against
- 11:22Speaker 1: that defense. But the coaching staff also seems to understand
- 11:25Speaker 1: that it didn't need Jones to win the game by himself.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And this is where I have a question. Why can't
- 11:30Speaker 1: Florida take that same approach with Aaron Filo? Why can't
- 11:34Speaker 1: the coaching staff build an offensive game plan that takes
- 11:36Speaker 1: pressure off the quarterback, emphasizes the running game, and creates
- 11:39Speaker 1: manageable third down situations? The offense we saw against Missouri
- 11:43Speaker 1: and South Carolina wasn't just a quarterback problem. I don't
- 11:46Speaker 1: think that was any of the major problems, honestly. I
- 11:49Speaker 1: don't think that changing quarterbacks in those two games fixes
- 11:52Speaker 1: those issues. Florida still has to run the football. Florida
- 11:55Speaker 1: still has to block. It still has to create explosive plays.
- 11:59Speaker 1: And it still has to protect whoever is standing back
- 12:01Speaker 1: there in the pocket. If I'm John Summerall, I'm evaluating
- 12:04Speaker 1: the quarterback position. But I'm also evaluating why the offense
- 12:07Speaker 1: looks so different against Texas. Was it Jones? Was it
- 12:10Speaker 1: the game plan? Was it just that the people around
- 12:13Speaker 1: him executed better than they had the previous two weeks?
- 12:16Speaker 1: Or is it maybe a combination of all three? The
- 12:19Speaker 1: answer to that question should play a major role in
- 12:21Speaker 1: determining who starts against Georgia. So now Florida has a
- 12:25Speaker 1: bye week, and I actually think the timing of this
- 12:27Speaker 1: couldn't be better. First and foremost, it gives Aaron Filo
- 12:29Speaker 1: additional time to recover from a shoulder injury. And I
- 12:32Speaker 1: don't think Florida should really even consider rushing him back
- 12:35Speaker 1: before he is completely healthy. But assuming Filo is cleared
- 12:38Speaker 1: to play against Georgia, Summerall has a decision to make.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And this is what I would do. I'd reopen the competition.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Not because Philo has done something to deserve losing his job.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I don't think he has. And not because Jones has
- 12:49Speaker 1: somehow proven that he is automatically the better player after
- 12:52Speaker 1: one game. But because Jones has earned the right to
- 12:55Speaker 1: be seriously considered. Remember, this was a close competition in
- 12:58Speaker 1: the fall camp. The coaching staff already believed both players
- 13:01Speaker 1: were capable of winning games. And now Jones has gone
- 13:04Speaker 1: out and proven he can do exactly that against a
- 13:06Speaker 1: top 10 opponent on the road. I don't know how
- 13:09Speaker 1: you ignore that. And frankly, I don't think Summerall will.
- 13:12Speaker 1: This is a coach who has made it very clear
- 13:13Speaker 1: that competition matters. He's talked repeatedly about accountability, earning opportunities,
- 13:19Speaker 1: and putting the best players on the field. Well, here
- 13:22Speaker 1: is an opportunity to back that up. Let both quarterbacks compete.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Evaluate how they're practicing. Evaluate how they're handling the offense.
- 13:28Speaker 1: And most importantly, evaluate which quarterback gives Florida the best
- 13:31Speaker 1: opportunity to beat Georgia. But I do want to make
- 13:34Speaker 1: one thing clear. I don't think the answer should automatically
- 13:37Speaker 1: be Jones just because Florida won Saturday. And I don't
- 13:40Speaker 1: think the answer should automatically be Philo because he was
- 13:42Speaker 1: the starter before getting injured. Neither of those is a
- 13:45Speaker 1: good enough reason by itself. This needs to be about
- 13:48Speaker 1: what gives Florida the best opportunity to win. And if
- 13:51Speaker 1: that turns out to be Tramell Jones, then wonderful. If
- 13:55Speaker 1: it's Aaron Philo, great without two. And then there's another
- 13:59Speaker 1: possibility we haven't talked about. Could Florida find a way
- 14:03Speaker 1: to use both quarterbacks moving forward? I am generally not
- 14:06Speaker 1: a huge fan of rotating quarterbacks just for the sake
- 14:08Speaker 1: of rotating quarterbacks. I think that rhythm matters and chemistry matters,
- 14:12Speaker 1: and I think quarterbacks need to know that they can
- 14:14Speaker 1: make a mistake without immediately looking over their shoulder. But
- 14:17Speaker 1: if Florida believes these two guys have different strengths, there
- 14:20Speaker 1: might be opportunities to use both. Maybe there are certain
- 14:23Speaker 1: packages that fit Jones particularly well. Maybe there are situations
- 14:26Speaker 1: where the staff prefers Philo's ability to attack downfield. I'm
- 14:30Speaker 1: not suggesting Florida should start changing quarterbacks every series. I
- 14:33Speaker 1: actually think that could create more problems than it solves.
- 14:36Speaker 1: But I also wouldn't completely dismiss the possibility of using
- 14:39Speaker 1: both guys in certain situations. The key is having a
- 14:42Speaker 1: clear plan. The last thing Florida needs coming out of
- 14:45Speaker 1: the bye week is uncertainty at quarterback and that turning
- 14:48Speaker 1: into confusion on offense. And there's a big difference between
- 14:51Speaker 1: healthy competition and a quarterback controversy that could become a distraction.
- 14:56Speaker 1: So here's where I land on all of this. I
- 14:58Speaker 1: think Tramell Jones absolutely deserves an opportunity to compete for
- 15:01Speaker 1: the starting quarterback job. And I think the conversation is legitimate.
- 15:04Speaker 1: What he did against Texas was impressive. Not because he
- 15:07Speaker 1: threw for 400 yards, not because he made a bunch
- 15:09Speaker 1: of spectacular throws, but because of the circumstances. First career
- 15:13Speaker 1: start on the road against the seventh ranked team in
- 15:15Speaker 1: the country down 17-3. And instead of falling apart, he
- 15:18Speaker 1: helped Florida win. And he completely changed the conversation around
- 15:24Speaker 1: this football program by winning that game. And I think
- 15:28Speaker 1: that's important. But here's what also matters. Aaron Philo was
- 15:31Speaker 1: a big part of Florida starting this season 4-0. He
- 15:33Speaker 1: put up some outstanding numbers. He helped lead one of
- 15:36Speaker 1: the most productive offenses in the country during September. And
- 15:39Speaker 1: he shouldn't lose his job simply because he got hurt.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I think both things can be true. Jones has earned
- 15:44Speaker 1: an opportunity, and Philo has earned consideration based on what
- 15:47Speaker 1: he's already accomplished. So now it's up to John Summerall
- 15:50Speaker 1: and Buster Faulkner to determine which quarterback gives this team
- 15:53Speaker 1: the best chance to win. And I actually think Florida's
- 15:55Speaker 1: in a pretty good position right here. Think about where
- 15:59Speaker 1: this team was a week ago. There were serious concerns
- 16:01Speaker 1: about practically every aspect of this football program. Now, coming
- 16:05Speaker 1: out of a win over Texas, Florida has two quarterbacks
- 16:08Speaker 1: who have demonstrated they can win games in the SEC.
- 16:11Speaker 1: That's not necessarily a problem. That can actually be a
- 16:13Speaker 1: good thing. But the next decision is going to be important.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Florida's next opponent is Georgia. And with the Bulldogs coming
- 16:19Speaker 1: off that loss to Auburn, the stakes and the opportunity
- 16:22Speaker 1: are only getting bigger. The Gators have already shown that
- 16:25Speaker 1: they can beat Ole Miss. They've now shown that they
- 16:27Speaker 1: can beat Texas. The question is whether they can build
- 16:30Speaker 1: on that momentum and start playing with some consistency. And
- 16:33Speaker 1: quarterback is obviously going to be a major part of
- 16:36Speaker 1: that equation. So did Trammell Jones create a quarterback controversy
- 16:40Speaker 1: at Florida? I think he did. But maybe controversy isn't
- 16:43Speaker 1: even the right word. Maybe what he really did was
- 16:45Speaker 1: remind everyone why this was such a close competition in
- 16:48Speaker 1: the first place. And after what we saw in Austin...
- 16:51Speaker 1: I don't think Florida can simply pretend that the competition
- 16:54Speaker 1: doesn't exist anymore. So now I want to hear from
- 16:57Speaker 1: you guys. Who do you think should start? Assuming Aaron
- 17:02Speaker 1: Filo is healthy against Georgia, which, you know, that's something
- 17:05Speaker 1: that we don't know too. But let's say he is.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Who should start against Georgia? Do you give Filo his
