- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Italian with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is good to be back with you. Lucas: Yes. We have covered a lot this winter. From cabin coziness to mountain views. Luna: Right. And last time we learned directions at the station. Lucas: Exactly. But what if you are lost? Or confused? Today we focus on asking for help. Luna: Oh, that is so practical. I always get nervous when I do not understand. Lucas: It happens to everyone. The key is being polite. Let us start with the most important phrase. Luna: Okay. What is it? Lucas: Scusi, può aiutarmi? Luna: Scusi, può aiutarmi? Lucas: Good. Scusi means excuse me. Polite form. Può aiutarmi means can you help me? Luna: Let me try again. Scusi, può aiutarmi? Lucas: Perfect. Very clear. This works for anyone. A stranger, a shop assistant, a police officer. Luna: I feel more confident saying that already. Lucas: Now imagine you are in a big city. You need something specific. Like a bathroom. Luna: Oh yes. That is urgent sometimes. Lucas: Right. So you might ask: Dov'è il bagno? Luna: Dov'è il bagno? Lucas: Excellent. Dov'è means where is. Il bagno is the bathroom. Luna: So Dov'è il bagno? translates to Where is the bathroom? Lucas: Exactly. Short, direct, polite. Italians appreciate clarity. Luna: I like that. It feels less intimidating than a long sentence. Lucas: It is. Now, what if the person speaks too fast? Or uses words you do not know? Luna: Ugh. That happens to me all the time. Lucas: So you say: Non capisco. Luna: Non capisco. Lucas: Non means no. Capisco means I understand. So Non capisco is I do not understand. Luna: Non capisco. Okay. I will remember that one. Lucas: It is a lifesaver. It buys you time. It signals that communication needs to slow down. Luna: Yeah. It stops the panic. Lucas: Sometimes you just want someone who speaks your language. Especially if you are really stuck. Luna: Do you ask directly? Is that rude? Lucas: Not if you are polite. You can ask: Parla inglese? Luna: Parla inglese? Lucas: Parla means you speak. Inglese is English. So Parla inglese? means Do you speak English? Luna: Parla inglese? Oh, that is very simple. Lucas: Yes. Keep it short. Use the formal form Parla, not parli, unless you are talking to a friend. Luna: Got it. Formal Parla for strangers. Lucas: Correct. And whatever they say, end with thanks. Luna: Of course. Grazie. Lucas: But let us make it warmer. Grazie mille. Luna: Grazie mille. Lucas: Mille means thousand. So grazie mille is thank you very much. Luna: Grazie mille. I love that. It feels sincere. Lucas: It does. Let us practice the whole sequence. Imagine you are in Rome. Luna: Okay. I am standing on a street corner. Lucas: You see a local. You approach. Say hello. Luna: Scusi, può aiutarmi? Lucas: Good. They nod. You need to find a restroom. Luna: Dov'è il bagno? Lucas: They point, but talk fast. You did not catch it. Luna: Non capisco. Lucas: They smile. Maybe they try again. Still confusing. Luna: Parla inglese? Lucas: They shake their head. No English. But they draw a map on paper. Luna: Grazie mille! Lucas: Perfect interaction. Polite, clear, grateful. Luna: It felt natural. Not like a textbook exercise. Lucas: That is because it is real life. These are the tools you use daily. Luna: I am going to try these out next time I travel. Lucas: Do it. And remember, fear is normal. But phrases give you power. Luna: True. Thank you for teaching me, Lucas. Lucas: My pleasure. Before we go, I want to mention something about Fexingo. Luna: Yes? Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, consider supporting us. Luna: It really helps keep the episodes coming. Lucas: We have a page on buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo — that's F. E. X. I. N. G. O. Luna: Supporting the show makes sense. It keeps it ad-free. Lucas: Exactly. And now back to our phrases. Luna: Right. Let us review Scusi, può aiutarmi? Lucas: Scusi, può aiutarmi? Luna: Dov'è il bagno? Lucas: Dov'è il bagno? Luna: Non capisco. Lucas: Non capisco. Luna: Parla inglese? Lucas: Parla inglese? Luna: Grazie mille. Lucas: Grazie mille. Luna: One more time. For real. Lucas: Scusi, può aiutarmi? Dov'è il bagno? Non capisco? Parla inglese? Grazie mille. Luna: Those five phrases changed everything for me. Lucas: They are simple, but they open doors. Luna: I feel ready to ask for help anywhere. Lucas: That is the goal. Practice them until they are automatic. Luna: I will. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: See you next time. Ciao.
