- 0:12Speaker 1: Thank you for calling money. This is your money? Oh okay, yes, no,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I get it. I bet that speech at the fundraiser
- 0:18Speaker 1: was amazing. But you know, I just don't think we
- 0:21Speaker 1: can give our entire paycheck to save the guinea pigs.
- 0:25Speaker 1: So how about instead we start with a percentage? No,
- 0:29Speaker 1: not ninety I was sinking lower. Now we're gonna talk
- 0:32Speaker 1: about my favorite thing. It's called a budget. Hello, where'd
- 0:37Speaker 1: you go? I'm gonna say a word, and this word
- 0:40Speaker 1: starts with the letter B. All right, there, you know
- 0:42Speaker 1: what if we butget hello?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Now we're gonna make a budget.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Hello, todam, I'm gonna make a budget for you.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Hello.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Okay, that was fair. I just want to help someone
- 0:53Speaker 1: make a plan.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Please, let's talk about a budget. Money.
- 1:06Speaker 1: What's your emergency?
- 1:07Speaker 3: Mom?
- 1:07Speaker 1: I told you not to call me on this line.
- 1:09Speaker 1: It's very important work that I'm trying to do here. Yeah, Mom,
- 1:13Speaker 1: one joke, wasn't That is a good one.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Dad?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Do you hear this joke from mom?
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah? Mom?
- 1:18Speaker 1: Tell her, hey, money, this is me.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I'm money. Hello.
- 1:22Speaker 1: How can I help you?
- 1:23Speaker 2: Oh?
- 1:25Speaker 1: Ah, yes, I could hear that.
- 1:27Speaker 2: You are very frustrated.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Well, I don't have the authority to spend myself, but
- 1:32Speaker 1: I can help you figure out who has been spending me.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Are we sure that it wasn't you though?
- 1:39Speaker 1: Okay, all right, we can look at the statement if
- 1:41Speaker 1: you want to. Yeah, on page twelve, that is how
- 1:45Speaker 1: much interest you are paying on your credit card every month.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I did not sign us up for that deal.
- 1:52Speaker 2: That was not me.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Okay, so you've already bought it. Oh so now you
- 1:57Speaker 1: want to figure out how to pay for it? Okay,
- 2:00Speaker 1: Well it'd be really nice if we had these conversations
- 2:03Speaker 1: before you made the purchase.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Thank you for calling Money, Karen.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I'm so glad that you called again. Now we can
- 2:14Speaker 1: finally put together a plan. I don't think I sound
- 2:17Speaker 1: like your father. Well, your father sounds like a very
- 2:22Speaker 1: nice and intelligent man, and maybe you should listen to
- 2:26Speaker 1: both of us more. Karen, that is some very saucy language.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I meant that is a compliment. You know what.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Okay, I'm getting a call. I'm gonna have to put
- 2:34Speaker 1: all these Hello, Money, what's your emergency?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Karen?
- 2:38Speaker 1: Just because you call me on a different line isn't
- 2:40Speaker 1: gonna lead to a different result.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I am not yelling.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I just need you to listen to me. I thought
- 2:51Speaker 1: we were going to study.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Hey, everybody, welcome back to If Money talked. As you know,
- 2:58Speaker 3: we've been working our way through some of the advice
- 3:00Speaker 3: our money might give us if our money could actually talk,
- 3:03Speaker 3: And as it turns out, we've discovered that what our
- 3:05Speaker 3: money would say actually matches what Jesus did say when Jesus.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Talked about money.
- 3:10Speaker 3: If you'll remember, in session one, money said I can
- 3:13Speaker 3: add a meaning to your life, but I am not
- 3:15Speaker 3: the meaning of life. Life is not just a race
- 3:17Speaker 3: to accumulate the most. You're going to leave it all
- 3:19Speaker 3: behind anyway. Then last time in session two, we said
- 3:22Speaker 3: that if our money could talk, it would probably remind
- 3:25Speaker 3: us the moment you think you own me, well I
- 3:28Speaker 3: actually own you. When we lose sight of the fact
- 3:31Speaker 3: that our money is not ours, that we're just managers,
- 3:33Speaker 3: it starts calling the shots. So, like responsible, accountable managers
- 3:38Speaker 3: of someone else's money, we've been tracking where it's going,
- 3:41Speaker 3: because everybody should be knowing where their master's money is going. Now,
- 3:46Speaker 3: if you've been playing along, and if you spent this
- 3:49Speaker 3: past week spying on your money, you may have noticed
- 3:52Speaker 3: that they're essentially well, there are essentially five things you
- 3:54Speaker 3: can do with money. There are certainly categories to each
- 3:57Speaker 3: of these, but essentially, there are just five things you
- 3:59Speaker 3: can do with your mone money.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Number One, you can spend it, and we're all pretty
- 4:02Speaker 2: good at that. Right.
- 4:03Speaker 3: You can pay debt depending on how much you've already
- 4:06Speaker 3: spent or misspent. You can pay your taxes, and I
- 4:08Speaker 3: sure hope you're doing that, or you can save money.
- 4:11Speaker 3: And then fifth you can give money away. Those are
- 4:13Speaker 3: basically the five things you can do with your money,
- 4:16Speaker 3: and for most of us, that's the order we actually
- 4:18Speaker 3: do them in. Right, First we spend. Number two, we
- 4:21Speaker 3: pay off debt. Number three we pay our taxes. Number
- 4:24Speaker 3: four we save, and if there's any leftover, well we
- 4:27Speaker 3: might give some away. These are the five things you
- 4:29Speaker 3: can do with money, and for the majority of people,
- 4:32Speaker 3: that's the order in which they're done. Now, I want
- 4:34Speaker 3: to go through that list one more time, but this
- 4:36Speaker 3: time I want to put a little bit different spend
- 4:38Speaker 3: on it. Number one thing we can do with our money, well,
- 4:40Speaker 3: that's for me. The number two thing we can do
- 4:42Speaker 3: with our money, Oh, that's for me too. The number
- 4:44Speaker 3: three thing we can do with our money. That's kind
- 4:46Speaker 3: of just America in me. Number four that we do
- 4:48Speaker 3: with our money, well that's for me, and then number five,
- 4:51Speaker 3: well that's for God and others. So it goes like this, me, me, me, me,
- 4:55Speaker 3: God and others. That's how it's done to the majority
- 4:58Speaker 3: of cases, and perhaps that's how it's done in your home.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Now.
- 5:01Speaker 3: The problem with all of that, of course, is that
- 5:03Speaker 3: God and others come in last. Essentially, God and others
- 5:06Speaker 3: get the leftovers. If I haven't spent it all, if
- 5:09Speaker 3: I don't owe it all, if the government doesn't get
- 5:12Speaker 3: it all, and if I don't save it all for
- 5:14Speaker 3: myself later, then perhaps God and others will get some.
- 5:17Speaker 2: This is called me first.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Living with some left overgiving. And this is totally understandable
- 5:23Speaker 3: because this is the script most of us inherited.
- 5:26Speaker 2: This is what we saw modeled in our.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Homes, and this is certainly what in culture encourages. But
- 5:32Speaker 3: when Jesus showed up, he literally flipped that script. Here's
- 5:36Speaker 3: what he said, for where your treasure is there, your
- 5:40Speaker 3: heart will be also. Now I bet you've heard that before.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Where your treasure is your treasure is your stuff. It's
- 5:46Speaker 3: your money, it's your hopes, it's your dreams. But it's
- 5:48Speaker 3: your physical stuff, and Jesus says, wherever your treasure is,
- 5:52Speaker 3: your heart follows. And he wasn't trying to shame us.
- 5:56Speaker 3: He was actually just giving us a principle, a fact
- 5:58Speaker 3: of life. Whatever it's, our money gets our attention. Now,
- 6:03Speaker 3: if you've ever had a new car, you understand this.
- 6:05Speaker 3: For the first few weeks, maybe the first few months,
- 6:07Speaker 3: you parked it at the very edge of the parking lot,
- 6:09Speaker 3: right as far away from all the other cars as
- 6:12Speaker 3: you could get. In fact, if you had a minivan,
- 6:14Speaker 3: you might not even allowed your kids to eat in it.
- 6:16Speaker 3: You were spent cleaning every smudge. That car cost a
- 6:19Speaker 3: lot of money, so it got a lot of your attention.
- 6:23Speaker 2: It had a piece of your heart.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Right, Jesus knew how this works, and Jesus knew that
- 6:28Speaker 3: our money takes a little bit of our heart everywhere
- 6:31Speaker 3: it goes. So he says, if I want to know
- 6:34Speaker 3: where your heart is, if I want to know what's
- 6:36Speaker 3: going to get your attention, your passion, your time, then
- 6:39Speaker 3: all I have to do is look at your bank statement,
- 6:41Speaker 3: your credit card statement, not your Bible. If you want
- 6:45Speaker 3: to know where your heart really is, Jesus says, show
- 6:47Speaker 3: me your money. Or show me where you sent it
- 6:50Speaker 3: and show me where you spent it. Because your heart
- 6:53Speaker 3: follows your money, which brings us something I referenced in
- 6:56Speaker 3: session one, but I kind of left you hanging.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Isn't after your money, right, What's he after? He's after
- 7:04Speaker 2: your heart?
- 7:05Speaker 3: And the best way for your savior, your heavenly father,
- 7:08Speaker 3: to take possession of your heart is to allow him
- 7:10Speaker 3: to take possession of how you manage your money. Now,
- 7:15Speaker 3: lots of people dedicate their hearts to God, especially in
- 7:17Speaker 3: times of crisis, right, but Jesus asked his followers to
- 7:21Speaker 3: dedicate their possessions.
- 7:23Speaker 2: That's how you know whose you really are.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Jesus knew that our money and our possessions are where
- 7:30Speaker 3: the rubber meets the road in terms of our ultimate devotion.
- 7:33Speaker 3: It is so much easier to give your health and
- 7:35Speaker 3: your career or even your relationships to your heavenly father, right,
- 7:38Speaker 3: so much easier than to dedicate your money. I mean,
- 7:42Speaker 3: when you're sick, you invite God into your health. He
- 7:44Speaker 3: wanted to intervene. When you're out of work, you ask
- 7:46Speaker 3: him to intervene on your behalf and to land you
- 7:48Speaker 3: a good interview. And you want to know why it's
- 7:50Speaker 3: easier to trust God with those things because you don't
- 7:53Speaker 3: have any control over them anyway. You're relying on doctors
- 7:56Speaker 3: or you're hoping the hr Guiy calls you back. But money,
- 8:00Speaker 3: money's different. Because money's tangible, you get to decide what
- 8:03Speaker 3: to do with it. So when Jesus started talking about
- 8:06Speaker 3: where your treasure is, there, your heart will be Also,
- 8:09Speaker 3: he meant that the ultimate litmus test for our devotion
- 8:12Speaker 3: to God is what we do with our money. So
- 8:16Speaker 3: if our money could talk, it might remind us. My
- 8:19Speaker 3: direction reveals your affection. My direction ultimately reveals your affection
- 8:26Speaker 3: what is most important to you. Your money's direction, what
- 8:30Speaker 3: you spend it on, reveals what you care about most.
- 8:32Speaker 3: So let's go back to that list of priorities for
- 8:35Speaker 3: just a second. How most of us spend most of
- 8:36Speaker 3: our money. Remember, it's me first, it's me second, it's
- 8:40Speaker 3: me third, it's me fourth. And then if there's any leftover,
- 8:42Speaker 3: or I feel compassionate, or I feel guilty, or there's
- 8:45Speaker 3: a tsunami or an earthquake, then well, you know, then
- 8:48Speaker 3: I might give. And if you think about it most terms,
- 8:51Speaker 3: that's kind of messed up, isn't it.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I mean to me.
- 8:53Speaker 3: It's a little bit embarrassing. So Jesus offers us a remedy.
- 8:57Speaker 3: He calls us to flip that skin script, to reprioritize,
- 9:02Speaker 3: to flip that list, and don't panic. You're not going
- 9:04Speaker 3: to have to give everything away or sell all your possessions.
- 9:07Speaker 3: That would actually be irresponsible, that would just make you
- 9:10Speaker 3: a burden on someone else. Right, this isn't about living irresponsibly. Actually,
- 9:14Speaker 3: it's just the opposite. Spending almost everything on you or
- 9:17Speaker 3: saving it for your future. That's actually irresponsible, and light
- 9:21Speaker 3: of the fact that it's not even yours to begin with.
- 9:23Speaker 3: So this isn't about having nothing. It's about reprioritizing everything.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Here's how Jesus put it. But seek first, seek first
- 9:33Speaker 3: is the key. This is so important. Seek first, that is,
- 9:36Speaker 3: put first, reprioritize, reordered, rearrange, rethink, but seek first his
- 9:42Speaker 3: kingdom and his righteousness.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Now the word kingdom.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Throws us off, because well, we don't live in a kingdom,
- 9:48Speaker 3: and the word righteousness sounds complicated and religious. But Jesus
- 9:51Speaker 3: is saying something so simple and so important.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Here's what he's saying.
- 9:54Speaker 3: In my father's kingdom, my father's kingdom is another's first kingdom.
- 9:59Speaker 2: If you're going to.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Follow me, it's going to be about doing what's right
- 10:02Speaker 3: for others and doing that first. Jesus taught throughout his
- 10:06Speaker 3: ministry that what's right for other people is what's right.
- 10:09Speaker 3: That what's best for other people, well, that's what's best.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So Jesus says, here's what I want you to do.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I want you to turn that list upside down and
- 10:17Speaker 3: I want you to put God and others first.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I want you to put you second.
- 10:20Speaker 3: You're still on the list, it's just that you're not
- 10:23Speaker 3: at the top of the list. Jesus is actually inviting
- 10:27Speaker 3: us into something. He's inviting us into a world, or
- 10:30Speaker 3: to use his term, a kingdom where we don't go first.
- 10:34Speaker 3: This is his invitation to give your money before you
- 10:37Speaker 3: spend it or save it or spend it in the future,
- 10:40Speaker 3: and consequently give ourselves to God. And do you know
- 10:42Speaker 3: why Jesus taught this not because he wants your money again,
- 10:46Speaker 3: It's because he wants you and he knows what's best
- 10:49Speaker 3: for you. And I'm telling you, in the kingdom where
- 10:51Speaker 3: you don't go first, you are going to find more peace,
- 10:54Speaker 3: more joy, more purpose, and more meaning and ultimately, and
- 10:57Speaker 3: you may not believe this when you pry ties the
- 11:00Speaker 3: Jesus way, when you flip that script, you will have
- 11:03Speaker 3: more financial margin as well. Look at the rest of
- 11:07Speaker 3: this statement again, these words are so familiar. And all
- 11:10Speaker 3: these things will be given to you as well.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And what are all these things?
- 11:14Speaker 3: These are the things you worry about, These are the
- 11:16Speaker 3: things you fret about. These are the things well, these
- 11:19Speaker 3: are the things that have to be done and have
- 11:20Speaker 3: to be paid for. All of these things that are
- 11:23Speaker 3: crucial to being able to survive, They're going to be
- 11:25Speaker 3: provided for us as well. This isn't either or, this
- 11:28Speaker 3: isn't others to the exclusion of you. This is about priorities.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Pure and simple. It's about who comes first.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Seek he first his kingdom, and he will take care
- 11:38Speaker 3: of yours. Simply put, give first, save second, pay your taxes,
- 11:43Speaker 3: repay your debt, and then live on what's leftover. Yep,
- 11:47Speaker 3: you get the leftovers. Now, let me make this even
- 11:50Speaker 3: simpler for you. Here's the system. Here's the system I
- 11:53Speaker 3: would love for you to embrace. I've been teaching this
- 11:55Speaker 3: for over twenty years. Sandra and I have lived this
- 11:58Speaker 3: way for over thirty years.
- 11:59Speaker 2: It's so simple. Three words.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Give, save, live, Give save, and live when you get paid.
- 12:05Speaker 3: You invest in God's kingdom first. You give first, then
- 12:08Speaker 3: you invest in your future. You save second, and then
- 12:11Speaker 3: you live on the rest. Give save, live on the rest.
- 12:14Speaker 3: This is how you throw open the door to God's
- 12:16Speaker 3: involvement in your financial future. And I'm telling you, rich people,
- 12:19Speaker 3: poor people, everybody in between. This is the key to
- 12:22Speaker 3: financial security. This is how you live responsibly. This is
- 12:26Speaker 3: actually the key to true financial freedom. This is actually
- 12:29Speaker 3: the key to financial peace. You give first, save second,
- 12:31Speaker 3: and then live on the rest. Now here's a tip.
- 12:35Speaker 3: I don't want you to.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Think in terms of amounts of money. I want you
- 12:38Speaker 2: to think in terms of percentages.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I want you to pick a percentage of your income
- 12:42Speaker 3: ahead of time, and then give it away as soon.
- 12:44Speaker 2: As you get it.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Whatever the percentage is, and I'm not even going to
- 12:47Speaker 3: make a suggestion. You pick that percentage, whatever it is.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Talk to your spouse, talk to your friends, family members,
- 12:52Speaker 3: but choose a percentage. Figure out a way to get
- 12:55Speaker 3: that percentage of your money out of your kingdom into
- 12:57Speaker 3: someone else's kingdom before you have a chance to spend it.
- 13:01Speaker 3: Pick one or two nonprofits, a local church that you love,
- 13:05Speaker 3: maybe somebody that's doing stuff in your community that's near
- 13:07Speaker 3: and dear to your heart, maybe something with children or
- 13:10Speaker 3: foster kids, or a hospital, whatever it is.
- 13:12Speaker 2: And don't wait to be asked.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Everybody gives, or just about everybody gives when they're asked,
- 13:17Speaker 3: and just about everybody gives when there's an emergency.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I want you to be better than that.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Find organizations you love and start sending them money every
- 13:25Speaker 3: single month, regardless of whether or not there's an emergency,
- 13:28Speaker 3: and regardless of whether or not they ever ask. Pick
- 13:31Speaker 3: a percentage, then decide where it's going and let it go.
- 13:35Speaker 3: And then second, pick a percentage to save. This is
- 13:38Speaker 3: also a way of helping other people, because you don't
- 13:40Speaker 3: want your kids or your grandkids to.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Have to take care of you. Right, Preparing for.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Your own future is a way of loving other people.
- 13:48Speaker 3: So save a percentage of your money. Second, and then
- 13:51Speaker 3: well then you just consume your heart out, live on
- 13:54Speaker 3: the rest, newer, nicer, upgraded, renovated, whatever. Once you've given
- 13:58Speaker 3: a percentage, and once you have saved a percentage, everything left.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Over is yours to spend.
- 14:04Speaker 3: That's how you guard, not just against financial disaster. That's
- 14:07Speaker 3: how you guard against greed. It's how you ensure that
- 14:10Speaker 3: you have your money and that your money never has
- 14:14Speaker 3: you give.
- 14:15Speaker 2: First, save second, live on the rest.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Now, one last thing, I want you to pay close
- 14:22Speaker 3: attention to the internal tension this creates inside of you.
- 14:25Speaker 3: In other words, when you start thinking about giving away
- 14:28Speaker 3: a percentage of your money and giving away a percentage
- 14:30Speaker 3: of your money first, it's going to begin perhaps a
- 14:33Speaker 3: little battle on the inside of you. And I want
- 14:35Speaker 3: you to listen closely to those internal conversations, the ones
- 14:38Speaker 3: that you have with yourself, the ones that you're preparing
- 14:41Speaker 3: to have with your fiance or your husband or your wife,
- 14:44Speaker 3: or maybe the conversation you're already having with me in
- 14:46Speaker 3: your head, because I can hear you. You know, Andy,
- 14:48Speaker 3: I'm all for generosity, and that was pretty clever what
- 14:51Speaker 3: you did about the me me, me me.
- 14:53Speaker 2: You know, God and other's thing.
- 14:54Speaker 3: But if I start giving away a percentage of my money,
- 14:57Speaker 3: it's going to take us twice as long to say,
- 14:59Speaker 3: for a down payment, I'll be paying off my student
- 15:01Speaker 3: loans till I'm dead. I want you to pay attention
- 15:04Speaker 3: to that internal dialogue, that internal tension and here's why,
- 15:08Speaker 3: because I want you to discover something about yourself. I
- 15:11Speaker 3: want you to discover what is at the center of
- 15:13Speaker 3: your resistance. And this is so important. In fact, I
- 15:16Speaker 3: think you owe it to yourself. You certainly don't know
- 15:18Speaker 3: it to me. I want you to answer the question
- 15:21Speaker 3: that's at the center of your resistance. Why am I
- 15:23Speaker 3: resisting this? Why am I resisting this?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Really?
- 15:27Speaker 3: I want you to listen to the excuses you're telling yourself,
- 15:30Speaker 3: and then I want you to just give anyway. And
- 15:34Speaker 3: what you might discover is this that your resistance it's
- 15:37Speaker 3: not really about money, It's about something else. So give first,
- 15:42Speaker 3: save second, and then live on the rest. And if
- 15:44Speaker 3: you'll start working toward give safe, live, something will begin
- 15:47Speaker 3: to happen.
- 15:49Speaker 2: In your heart. I dare you to try it.
- 15:51Speaker 3: I challenge you to flip the script and give first,
- 15:54Speaker 3: put God and others first, put your future second, and
- 15:57Speaker 3: then adjust your lifestyle so you and afford to live
- 16:00Speaker 3: on the rest. It will impact every single area of
- 16:03Speaker 3: your life. It will certainly impact your financial life, and
- 16:06Speaker 3: ultimately it will impact everybody around these lives as well.
- 16:10Speaker 3: I've seen it one hundred times. You'll come back and
- 16:12Speaker 3: say I don't understand it. I can't exactly explain it,
- 16:15Speaker 3: but something has happened inside of me because of this
- 16:18Speaker 3: simple financial model. Something's happened to my family, Something's happened
- 16:22Speaker 3: to my finances. I can't explain it on paper, but
- 16:25Speaker 3: something's different. I'm different.
- 16:27Speaker 2: When you choose to put.
- 16:28Speaker 3: God first in a tangible way, in a way that's measurable,
- 16:31Speaker 3: in a way that actually feels like it's costing you something, everything.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Begins to change.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Jesus was clear the litmus test, and this is hard
- 16:38Speaker 3: for us. The litmus test of our devotion to God
- 16:41Speaker 3: is our willingness to put Him first in the arena
- 16:44Speaker 3: of our money and our possessions, not include him, not
- 16:47Speaker 3: offer him our leftovers, to put him first in the
- 16:50Speaker 3: arena of our money and our possessions. Because after all,
- 16:53Speaker 3: as money would say, my direction reveals your affection. Where
- 16:57Speaker 3: your money is there, your heart is also, so redirect
- 17:01Speaker 3: your heart.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Give first, save second, live on the rest.
