- 0:15Speaker 1: Happy Monday, everybody.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Get your week started off right here.
- 0:30Speaker 2: It's cold outside.
- 0:31Speaker 1: There is snow on top of the Wasatch Mountains. We
- 0:35Speaker 1: are now deeply into the fall season. Football, of course,
- 0:41Speaker 1: gave us another treat this weekend. You had a Friday
- 0:43Speaker 1: night BYU game. You had a Saturday night Utah game
- 0:46Speaker 1: that we got a late notice. We were moving that
- 0:52Speaker 1: kickoff up in anticipation of inclement weather. Ended up being
- 0:56Speaker 1: the exact opposite. Beautiful night at Rice Echo Stadium. I
- 1:01Speaker 1: was wearing a hoodie and it was too warm. It
- 1:03Speaker 1: was too hot. Even with the sun down in that hoodie,
- 1:07Speaker 1: the The low-pressure system blowing all that rain into, you know,
- 1:12Speaker 1: the hurricane leftovers or whatever we got this weekend was,
- 1:18Speaker 1: you know, pushing warm air in front of it and
- 1:21Speaker 1: gave us a wonderful night at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Of course,
- 1:26Speaker 1: made that much more interesting by a Utah victory in.
- 1:31Speaker 2: A game where.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You didn't look quite as clean. You didn't look quite
- 1:36Speaker 1: as good. In certain moments of that game, as this
- 1:40Speaker 1: Utah team has been so dominant up to this point,
- 1:43Speaker 1: there was, you know, some echoes of your third quarter
- 1:47Speaker 1: problems in the second quarter instead in this game. And
- 1:51Speaker 1: we'll just, we'll unpack it. That's what we're going to
- 1:53Speaker 1: do on a show today.
- 1:54Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 1:54Speaker 1: That's how you get ahold of us here at real
- 1:56Speaker 1: OC sports on Twitter. Tell me your favorite thing about
- 2:04Speaker 1: the game. Tell me your least favorite thing about the game.
- 2:06Speaker 2: What did you like? What didn't you like?
- 2:08Speaker 1: Ari Temkin is going to join us in half an
- 2:10Speaker 1: hour after another fascinating Big 12 football weekend. Morgan Scali's
- 2:15Speaker 1: press conference is today. And Zach Moss, the sideline reporter,
- 2:20Speaker 1: Utah football legend at 1 o'clock. I'd like to hear
- 2:24Speaker 1: from you always on a Monday, too.
- 2:25Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Look, Utah football.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Is a good team.
- 2:33Speaker 1: You know how you could tell they're a really good
- 2:34Speaker 1: team because even when it doesn't go perfectly, even when
- 2:38Speaker 1: the officials get themselves too involved and there's flags and
- 2:41Speaker 1: there's unfortunate situations involving that, even when you turn the
- 2:45Speaker 1: football over and your quarterback doesn't play particularly clean, even with.
- 2:51Speaker 2: All those things, you come away, you win and you cover.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Now, Kansas, you made Kansas look better than Kansas actually is.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Which I'm not happy about.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Isaiah Marshall ended up with a wonderful passing day, 19
- 3:07Speaker 1: to 37, not a great percentage, but 333 yards and
- 3:11Speaker 1: a couple of touchdowns to go with it. Uh, you, you,
- 3:15Speaker 1: you stifled the Kansas rushing attack and that's not the
- 3:18Speaker 1: easiest thing in the world to do. Dylan Edwards is
- 3:21Speaker 1: a talented back. Isaiah Marshall is a quarterback who can
- 3:24Speaker 1: run They carried the ball 21 times for 58 yards,
- 3:28Speaker 1: less than three yards of carry. That is something that
- 3:31Speaker 1: you pat yourself on the back over. That is something
- 3:33Speaker 1: that if you're Colton Swan on your defense, you say,
- 3:36Speaker 1: we wanted you to have to pass this football to
- 3:39Speaker 1: beat us. But, and a lot of those man coverage scenarios,
- 3:45Speaker 1: when your pass rush didn't get home, and credit to
- 3:47Speaker 1: Isaiah Marshall, the sophomore quarterback for the Kansas Jayhawks, He
- 3:53Speaker 1: is not going to finish his career as a Kansas Jayhawk.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:58Speaker 1: There's some coach out there at a more prominent power
- 4:03Speaker 1: school that is going to look at what he did
- 4:06Speaker 1: against Utah. If he can continue to do anything like
- 4:08Speaker 1: this and with that escape ability, with that elusiveness, with
- 4:13Speaker 1: that presence of mind in the pocket, and they're going
- 4:16Speaker 1: to say, Give me that behind a better offensive line.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Give me that with better weapons around him. Give me that.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And I want to see what I can make of
- 4:25Speaker 1: this kid. Cam Pickett, their number seven had a really
- 4:28Speaker 1: good day. Nick McMillan, their number five had a really
- 4:31Speaker 1: good day. Jackson Benny did not have his best day
- 4:34Speaker 1: as a youth by any stretch of the imagination. That
- 4:37Speaker 1: wasn't fun to see. You got to get some things
- 4:40Speaker 1: cleaned up in that defensive backfield, but you also have
- 4:43Speaker 1: to give credit to Kansas and particularly to Isaiah Marshall,
- 4:46Speaker 1: because what he did was, is he created a lot
- 4:48Speaker 1: of scenarios in which you had to cover for four
- 4:54Speaker 1: and a half seconds because he spins out of some
- 4:57Speaker 1: pressure because the blitz doesn't get him to the ground
- 5:00Speaker 1: because somebody.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Is also close.
- 5:02Speaker 1: And then he kind of sidesteps and he's still looking
- 5:06Speaker 1: downfield and your defensive backs have a bit of a bust.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Some of those also, he just dropped some dimes. He
- 5:13Speaker 2: threw a.
- 5:17Speaker 1: The ball is exactly where it needed to be, so
- 5:19Speaker 1: only his man could catch it. And the reason I'm
- 5:22Speaker 1: even mentioning that after a 17-point win is because that
- 5:27Speaker 1: is the tape that Houston is now going to show.
- 5:30Speaker 1: That is the tape that BYU is now going to show.
- 5:33Speaker 1: That's the tape that Deion Sanders is going to be
- 5:37Speaker 1: looking at this week. He just doesn't have the quarterback
- 5:40Speaker 1: to do anything about it, right?
- 5:42Speaker 2: Those other teams, maybe so.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So this is when the chess match between coaches comes
- 5:49Speaker 1: into play. This is when, if you're Sharif Shah, if
- 5:52Speaker 1: you're Derek Odom, if you're Colton Swan, this is when
- 5:55Speaker 1: you earn your money.
- 5:56Speaker 2: This is where you earn your paycheck. You coach these
- 5:58Speaker 2: guys up.
- 5:59Speaker 1: You make sure the mistakes made, the oversights, the undisciplined eyes,
- 6:03Speaker 1: the whatever, don't become a perpetual problem. Utah football, most importantly,
- 6:10Speaker 1: got the win. And once again, Utah, Way Sean Parker,
- 6:14Speaker 1: 16 carries, 171 yards, a couple of touchdowns. Devin Dampier,
- 6:19Speaker 1: 17 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown. Dev also
- 6:23Speaker 1: threw 23 of 30 for 238, three touchdowns and an interception.
- 6:29Speaker 2: And actually, I think that.
- 6:33Speaker 3: They.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Did they credit one fumble as an interception or one
- 6:36Speaker 1: interception as a fumbled?
- 6:38Speaker 2: They ended up officially.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Officially on the ESPN deal, they call it a fumble,
- 6:44Speaker 1: but on the broadcast, they kept talking about it was
- 6:47Speaker 1: an interception.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Yeah, this was interesting, OC. Producing it back here, so
- 6:52Speaker 4: I had a little bit of insight on this. Initially,
- 6:57Speaker 4: the refs seemed to have called it an interception, which
- 7:02Speaker 4: as I'm producing here, I've got the game on the TVs, OC,
- 7:05Speaker 4: but I'm often not able to see plays because I'm
- 7:09Speaker 4: focused on on doing a bunch of other things. This
- 7:12Speaker 4: time I did catch the replay. I was able to
- 7:15Speaker 4: look over and catch the replay and I'm like, how, wait,
- 7:18Speaker 4: how was that? How's that even close to being considered
- 7:22Speaker 4: an interception? And then you watch the replay in slow-mo
- 7:25Speaker 4: in particular and you're like, oh, it kind of did
- 7:27Speaker 4: look like he threw it and the ball never hit
- 7:31Speaker 4: the ground. the defender kind of juggled it and finally
- 7:34Speaker 4: came up. I'm like, okay, I guess technically interception, but
- 7:37Speaker 4: then they go, they went back on it and said, fumble,
- 7:40Speaker 4: which is what it looks like anyway.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Speaker 0 5, fumble interception turnover, right? When your quarterback
- 7:45Speaker 1: who's been so good at taking care of the football
- 7:48Speaker 1: all season long, when he turns the ball over twice
- 7:51Speaker 1: and you know, that one, you get hit, things happen.
- 7:54Speaker 1: The second interception and we'll get a chance to talk
- 7:56Speaker 1: to Devin at some point this week, the second interception
- 8:00Speaker 1: was just terrible. It was just a really bad fluttering throw.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You had two of your guys there that I think
- 8:07Speaker 1: maybe Noah, Benny didn't know if that ball was to him.
- 8:11Speaker 1: And in any case, defender comes down with it. Your
- 8:16Speaker 1: defense gets stops when they need to. Kansas was perfect
- 8:22Speaker 1: in the red zone coming into rice echo stadium on
- 8:25Speaker 1: Saturday night.
- 8:26Speaker 4: It got sneakily perfect in the red zone, given a
- 8:28Speaker 4: team that's tuned.
- 8:29Speaker 2: To down the stretch.
- 8:31Speaker 1: When Utah needed some stops, they got some stops from
- 8:35Speaker 1: their defense and they handed Kansas the first two red
- 8:39Speaker 1: zone stops of their season so far.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I'll tell you one thing.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Andy Kotelnicki is going to look back at the first stop, right?
- 8:50Speaker 1: That the first goal line stand for Utah. And he's
- 8:54Speaker 1: going to wonder why he didn't give his quarterback an
- 8:57Speaker 1: option to throw as he's rolling left and basically foot
- 9:01Speaker 1: racing to the pylon and doesn't get there in time again,
- 9:04Speaker 1: because of great defense, great pursuit, great hustle, great lane integrity.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I won't call it gap integrity. Cause you're, you're end
- 9:12Speaker 1: of the line of scrimmage to the sideline. When you're
- 9:15Speaker 1: talking about an open field tackle against somebody as shifty
- 9:19Speaker 1: as Isaiah Marshall, that's not as easy. Like, cause you
- 9:22Speaker 1: have to play inside out. You have to play inside
- 9:24Speaker 1: leverage out. If you over pursue and you just solely
- 9:28Speaker 1: try to beat him to the corner or He's going
- 9:30Speaker 1: to put his foot in the ground and cut back.
- 9:32Speaker 1: He's only got two yards to go, right? Or he's
- 9:35Speaker 1: going to spin back inside or whatever. So that was
- 9:37Speaker 1: really excellent sort of management of that situation by the
- 9:41Speaker 1: pursuing tacklers for the University of Utah. And you love
- 9:44Speaker 1: to see that. And it doesn't happen. Well, some guys
- 9:46Speaker 1: do it naturally, but it doesn't happen automatically. And it
- 9:49Speaker 1: means that you're practicing those things, that you're working on that.
- 9:55Speaker 1: You're paying attention to those details. There's no surprise on that.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Morgan scally knows better than anyone how difficult that is
- 10:02Speaker 1: and most of the time it is your safeties that
- 10:04Speaker 1: are making those tackles and that was the case in
- 10:06Speaker 1: that situation so credit to utah for coming up credit
- 10:10Speaker 1: to utah's defense for coming up big in those moments
- 10:13Speaker 1: and stopping a kansas team in the red zone that Weirdly,
- 10:17Speaker 1: they had stopped themselves on several drives this season right
- 10:21Speaker 1: before they got into the red zone. It would be
- 10:22Speaker 1: like they'd be at the 24-yard line and bogged down,
- 10:26Speaker 1: or then they'd get penalties that pushed them back to
- 10:28Speaker 1: the 40 or whatever else. But in the red zone,
- 10:31Speaker 1: they had been excellent. They had been perfect until Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And we need a thing, all right? Just like we
- 10:41Speaker 1: needed to name the two-quarterback system, We need there to
- 10:46Speaker 1: be in the stadium. When games get close, we need
- 10:50Speaker 1: to have a graphic on the big screen. You need
- 10:54Speaker 1: to have a spotlight that shines into the sky. You
- 10:58Speaker 1: need to have something that every fan in the bad
- 11:00Speaker 1: signal type thing. You need a bat signal for way.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Sean Parker.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Maybe everyone just throws up the west side, the w's
- 11:08Speaker 1: for way Sean.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Right.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Everyone that we do the 22 forever thing. Yeah.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Everyone in the stadium, when a game gets close and
- 11:16Speaker 1: it's time to hand the ball off to way, Sean Parker,
- 11:19Speaker 1: just everyone at rice cycle stadium, stand up, throw up
- 11:23Speaker 1: a West side and that w let that be the
- 11:27Speaker 1: signal that it is time for way, Sean, because that
- 11:30Speaker 1: dude just comes through and it happened again. And the
- 11:33Speaker 1: wildcat scenario after you were backed back, you get, that's
- 11:38Speaker 1: the one It's the, if there is a downside, it's the,
- 11:42Speaker 1: the difficulty of those goal line stands right now, you're
- 11:45Speaker 1: backed up against your own end zone. It's still a
- 11:46Speaker 1: close game. You gotta be careful with your play calling.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Gotta be careful.
- 11:50Speaker 1: If you're passing the ball that you're not making an
- 11:52Speaker 1: unsafe throw, they push it back. They push it back.
- 11:57Speaker 2: And a.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Little bit of breathing room with the pass from Devin,
- 12:02Speaker 1: Dan Pierre to Brandon Pagan.
- 12:04Speaker 2: It's Wait, did.
- 12:06Speaker 4: You just do the Brandon Pagan?
- 12:08Speaker 2: Did I just say Brandon?
- 12:09Speaker 4: I think you just did the Brandon Pagan. We're sorry, Texter,
- 12:12Speaker 4: who aired that. Or no, it was our guy from
- 12:15Speaker 4: Vernal who aired that grievance.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Can you dump that? I'm embarrassed that that just happened.
- 12:21Speaker 1: To Braden Pagan. You get Braden Pagan out there. He
- 12:25Speaker 1: gets you eight yards. And now you got a little
- 12:27Speaker 1: bit of breathing room. And here comes the play call.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Here comes the execution from your offensive line. Here comes
- 12:33Speaker 1: the vision from Way Sean Parker. The bat signal is up.
- 12:37Speaker 1: You need a play to make this close game not
- 12:40Speaker 1: a close game anymore.
- 12:41Speaker 2: And he delivers. Kevin Dampier motioning out to the far
- 12:45Speaker 2: left side. Way Sean Parker is the wildcat tailback. He
- 12:49Speaker 2: brings a man in motion. Keeps it himself. He's in
- 12:51Speaker 2: the open field. There he goes. 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 30, 20.
- 12:54Speaker 6: They're not going to get him.
- 12:59Speaker 4: It's a house.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Call for LeSean Parker.
- 13:02Speaker 7: 90 yards right up the middle and into the end
- 13:09Speaker 7: zone for.
- 13:09Speaker 1: A Utah touchdown. What a play. What a moment. What it,
- 13:18Speaker 1: I mean, salted the game away. There's still plenty of
- 13:21Speaker 1: time left to play, but what that did is it
- 13:24Speaker 1: after the goal line stand that that was the, the
- 13:28Speaker 1: goal line stand was the body blow, right? That had
- 13:32Speaker 1: Kansas on the ropes that had Kansas. Oh no, I
- 13:34Speaker 1: can't believe this just happened. We marched down, not even
- 13:38Speaker 1: marched down. We sprinted down the field. That was like,
- 13:41Speaker 1: it's like a three play drive.
- 13:42Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:43Speaker 4: They, and they did that like three drives in a row.
- 13:46Speaker 4: It seemed like the explosive plays surrendered to Kansas in
- 13:51Speaker 4: this game are again, they're massively problematic because they are
- 13:56Speaker 4: on film. It is going to be one of the
- 13:58Speaker 4: more difficult coaching things that this crew has to do.
- 14:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Derek to erase that, to erase that stuff from vulnerability
- 14:10Speaker 1: from the Utah football ethos because teams are going to
- 14:15Speaker 1: look at it and they're going to say look running
- 14:18Speaker 1: the ball inside tough running ball to the edges maybe
- 14:23Speaker 1: a little bit easier but also tough intermediate and short
- 14:26Speaker 1: throws that stuff but these linebackers are doing really well
- 14:30Speaker 1: with the crossing routes and some of these like inside
- 14:33Speaker 1: slants we're having a harder time with this you know
- 14:37Speaker 1: what We can get open down the sideline.
- 14:39Speaker 2: We can get open down the seam.
- 14:41Speaker 1: You can find that little like no man's land and
- 14:44Speaker 1: it'll take us four plays to get 70 yards down
- 14:48Speaker 1: the field. That is problematic. And again, you got to
- 14:52Speaker 1: give credit where it's due to Kansas for recognizing some
- 14:54Speaker 1: of the gaps in the coverage and for some of
- 14:57Speaker 1: the balls.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Being exactly where they needed to be.
- 14:59Speaker 1: But Utah cannot afford to let those soft spots continue
- 15:04Speaker 1: to exist. And if you're going to continue to play man,
- 15:08Speaker 1: which is the identity of this Utah football defense, if
- 15:12Speaker 1: you're going to continue to play man coverage out on
- 15:15Speaker 1: the edges, and obviously the safeties are going to come
- 15:18Speaker 1: and help, but if you're going to continue to play man,
- 15:22Speaker 1: you have to finish. You have to get home in
- 15:26Speaker 1: your pass rush. You cannot allow an elusive quarterback or
- 15:31Speaker 1: even just a statue in the pocket guy with good protection.
- 15:35Speaker 1: You cannot allow any quarterback in the big 12, four
- 15:40Speaker 1: and a half or five seconds to find somebody open
- 15:42Speaker 1: downfield because nine out of 10 times, they will find
- 15:45Speaker 1: somebody open downfield.
- 15:47Speaker 2: It's just the way things are.
- 15:48Speaker 1: And man, there were so many.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Oh, so close is again.
- 15:53Speaker 1: On pressure, on simulated pressure, on stunts, on just a
- 15:58Speaker 1: four-man pass rush. There were so many times where, guys,
- 16:02Speaker 1: it looked like plays dead. It looks like in the grasp.
- 16:05Speaker 1: It looks like Isaiah Marshall is going to be sacked
- 16:09Speaker 1: for a loss, dropped for a loss, hit.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Ball batted down, whatever.
- 16:14Speaker 1: And for whatever reason, the almost just didn't turn into
- 16:19Speaker 1: anything special. really that spectacular for the Utah defensive rush.
- 16:24Speaker 1: You had zero sacks in this game.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Zero.
- 16:28Speaker 1: I know sacks are an overrated stat, but when an
- 16:30Speaker 1: opponent drops back almost 40 times in a game, you
- 16:34Speaker 1: need a sack or a couple. When a quarterback is
- 16:38Speaker 1: as elusive and shifty as Isaiah Marshall, it's going to
- 16:41Speaker 1: bring those numbers down. It's going to be really, really tough.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And he deserves a ton of credit for that. However,
- 16:50Speaker 1: it's not like they were just like, okay, it's not
- 16:52Speaker 1: like Colton Swan was like, all right, we're going to
- 16:54Speaker 1: give up on the pressure thing. They were bringing it
- 16:56Speaker 1: on some of these drives and John who hall It
- 17:00Speaker 1: must've felt like he was trying to sack a ghost
- 17:02Speaker 1: a couple of times. There were two plays in a
- 17:04Speaker 1: row where he was there. He was, I mean, hip
- 17:08Speaker 1: to hip, chest to chest, arm to arm. They might
- 17:12Speaker 1: as well have been dancing in the club. And Isaiah
- 17:15Speaker 1: Marshall ends up completing a ball downfield 20 plus yards
- 17:19Speaker 1: after he should have been dropped by your defensive captain.
- 17:23Speaker 2: It's brutal to see those things unfold.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And you cannot let it continue for this university of
- 17:29Speaker 1: Utah football team. But at the end of the day,
- 17:32Speaker 1: you made the plays when you had to make the plays,
- 17:35Speaker 1: the defense bent, bent, bent, did not break in those
- 17:37Speaker 1: final two Kansas drives and way Sean Parker, once again,
- 17:42Speaker 1: send up the bat signal, call the phone, push the
- 17:46Speaker 1: red button and say, way Sean Parker, we need you.
- 17:50Speaker 4: That was unreal. I, That would be the coolest thing.
- 17:55Speaker 4: It's not obviously that sort of thing. They don't do
- 17:58Speaker 4: that at, at games, but that would be, that would
- 18:01Speaker 4: actually be the coolest. Do you see that W in
- 18:04Speaker 4: the sky?
- 18:05Speaker 9: Why not?
- 18:05Speaker 5: Why not?
- 18:06Speaker 1: I know they don't, but why not CBP?
- 18:08Speaker 2: Come on now.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Morgan Scali could do innovation.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Let's go. Crimson brand partners.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Let's go. Like just get, it doesn't even have to
- 18:15Speaker 1: be anything super formal. Just do like, give one of
- 18:20Speaker 1: the yell leaders a, a giant w spotlight.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Well, yeah.
- 18:25Speaker 4: How about whatever you, whatever you want. How about the
- 18:27Speaker 4: must takes this on? Don't even make this at a
- 18:30Speaker 4: CBP or a stadium thing. The must it's an organic
- 18:34Speaker 4: let's let's figure out some kind of thing here from
- 18:37Speaker 4: the must.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Send up the bat signal must and get us whatever.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Don't abuse it.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I only want to see this in third and fourth
- 18:46Speaker 1: quarters when games are too close for you. Everybody throw
- 18:50Speaker 1: up your way, Sean. whatever we decide the bat signal is,
- 18:53Speaker 1: this is the most convenient.
- 18:54Speaker 2: This is the easiest. If you're watching on.
- 18:55Speaker 4: YouTube or just threes, you know, and then, and then
- 18:59Speaker 4: ASL W and then guess what?
- 19:02Speaker 1: Kevin McGibbon, either consciously or subconsciously is going to see those.
- 19:05Speaker 1: And he's just going to be like, they're right. We
- 19:07Speaker 1: do need way Sean right now.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. They're right. They've been, they've been telling
- 19:12Speaker 2: me this and I'm finally going to listen way.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Sean Parker. I want way Sean Parker to have 20
- 19:19Speaker 1: plus touches every game in this game. He only had 18.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Now The reason he only had 18 in this game
- 19:26Speaker 1: is because that 90 yard touchdown run took off an
- 19:30Speaker 1: extra three or four touches in that drive that they
- 19:32Speaker 1: were going to give him.
- 19:33Speaker 2: He just got it all done in one. He just got,
- 19:36Speaker 2: he's just like, ah, you know what?
- 19:37Speaker 1: I'm just going to, and incredible blocking right side of
- 19:41Speaker 1: the offensive line. Congratulations to you. Everybody involved in that
- 19:45Speaker 1: play did what they were supposed to do.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Way Sean with the vision takes off. I don't even
- 19:50Speaker 2: think he got touched.
- 19:51Speaker 1: He might've had like one hand to shrug off, but
- 19:56Speaker 1: showed his speed.
- 19:56Speaker 4: He had the jam too, at the beginning, if I'm
- 19:59Speaker 4: not mistaken, he had to look at what he did
- 20:02Speaker 4: with his body.
- 20:03Speaker 1: This off season and the amount of work that he
- 20:06Speaker 1: put in, he eliminated some bad weight. I think his
- 20:09Speaker 1: weight is the same, but he eliminated some chub and
- 20:11Speaker 1: got all that to be muscle. And Kansas has some
- 20:15Speaker 1: fast defensive backs that were trying to chase him down.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Nobody caught him.
- 20:19Speaker 1: He goes north to south, ends up scoring a touchdown
- 20:23Speaker 1: that ultimately breaks the back of the Kansas Jayhawks, Utah wins,
- 20:27Speaker 1: Utah covers Utah five and oh, And the last time
- 20:32Speaker 1: a Utah football coach started their first five games with
- 20:34Speaker 1: wins was Jim fossil.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Uh, talked about that in the postgame interview, Bill Riley
- 20:42Speaker 4: and sly, uh, they brought that up to Morgan and
- 20:45Speaker 4: Morgan classic Scali said, I'm not the first Utah coach.
- 20:50Speaker 4: We're the first Utah team to do that with a
- 20:53Speaker 4: new coach. He, he, he chained, he took the spotlight
- 20:56Speaker 4: off of himself and put it back on the team.
- 20:59Speaker 4: So that, Kind of cool moment to hear that from
- 21:02Speaker 4: your head coach too.
- 21:05Speaker 2: This from Michael on the text line.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Every team is going to jump to the line of
- 21:09Speaker 1: scrimmage and snap, but Utah was caught probably 10 times
- 21:12Speaker 1: getting lined up. Yeah, you have to get the defensive
- 21:15Speaker 1: call in fast. You have to get things communicated faster.
- 21:18Speaker 2: You have to be.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Coaches will tell you alignment, assignment, execution.
- 21:24Speaker 1: If you already fail that chain in the alignment portion,
- 21:28Speaker 1: you're now playing from behind for the entire play.
- 21:30Speaker 2: It's going to be really, really difficult.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Curtis says, Folks need to realize Kansas has a top
- 21:36Speaker 1: 10 scoring offense. Credit their QB and wide receiver crew
- 21:39Speaker 1: for finding soft spots.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Utah needs to tighten that up.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Utah waited until the fourth quarter to bring safety down
- 21:45Speaker 1: on the blitz consistently, and it worked beautifully. It also
- 21:48Speaker 1: felt like Utah was playing afraid because of the PI
- 21:51Speaker 1: calls the refs were making. The second quarter was one
- 21:54Speaker 1: of the uglier quarters of football you're ever going to
- 21:57Speaker 1: have to watch at Rice-Eccles or anywhere else. It took
- 22:01Speaker 1: an hour and a half to get through the second
- 22:03Speaker 1: quarter because of flags and and weird stuff and controversies.
- 22:07Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, you got the
- 22:10Speaker 1: wind here. And that's really what matters for this Utah
- 22:12Speaker 1: football team. You got some things to work on. Even
- 22:16Speaker 1: in a 17 point, when you go back to the
- 22:18Speaker 1: drawing board and you say, all right, these are some
- 22:21Speaker 1: issues that we need to resolve.
- 22:23Speaker 2: And we've been.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Mostly just heaping praise on the play callers on both
- 22:29Speaker 1: sides of the ball for good reason because this team
- 22:31Speaker 1: is undefeated and still is. But another good thing about
- 22:36Speaker 1: this is that Colton Swan is going to go back
- 22:38Speaker 1: and he's going to say, okay, what did I do
- 22:41Speaker 1: to get my guys out of the best situation where
- 22:43Speaker 1: they could be maybe a little bit more successful if
- 22:45Speaker 1: I do it differently? And Kevin McGibbon's going to say
- 22:48Speaker 1: the same thing. All right, what do I need to
- 22:50Speaker 1: do a little bit differently? Who do I need to
- 22:52Speaker 1: give another touch or two?
- 22:54Speaker 2: Or maybe.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Maybe he found something with now another hundred yard receiver,
- 22:59Speaker 1: Ricky Johnson, five catches, 104 yards.
- 23:01Speaker 2: And what a game he had.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Unbelievable game. I, I also want Ricky Johnson to be
- 23:08Speaker 1: the official spokesperson of Utah football because he has just
- 23:13Speaker 1: the dopest South, like deep South accent.
- 23:16Speaker 4: I have to, I have to tell you another story
- 23:18Speaker 4: from the post game. because of what you just brought up.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I want Xavier Leggett from the Carolina Panthers and Ricky
- 23:25Speaker 1: Johnson to have a podcast together where you're just listening to,
- 23:30Speaker 1: to like deep South country boys talking.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 23:33Speaker 1: It's the greatest him on the post game with, with
- 23:36Speaker 1: bill and sly sounded awesome. But yeah, Brady pagan was
- 23:40Speaker 1: seven catches for 72 yards. Way Sean Parker, two catches
- 23:43Speaker 1: for 36 yards, Ricky Johnson. five catches for 104 yards.
- 23:48Speaker 1: So you had three receivers in this game with multiple
- 23:51Speaker 1: catches for more than 10 yards per catch. That is
- 23:55Speaker 1: winning football for the university of Utah. They have these
- 23:58Speaker 1: benchmarks in the program. You hear Morgan Scali mentioned them
- 24:02Speaker 1: in post game, when he's talking to the media, when he's,
- 24:05Speaker 1: he'll look at his efficiencies, look at his passing efficiency.
- 24:08Speaker 1: He'll look at these numbers. We want one 45. We
- 24:11Speaker 1: got one 72.
- 24:12Speaker 2: All right. We feel pretty good there.
- 24:14Speaker 1: They have these, these numbers already written out these targets
- 24:18Speaker 1: that they feel they need to hit and achieve.
- 24:21Speaker 2: And offensively they hit those.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And once again, Utah football with more than 30 points, 41,
- 24:28Speaker 1: in this case, they win They cover they're the 11th
- 24:32Speaker 1: Frank team in the country. They've got a kind of
- 24:36Speaker 1: a sneaky fall asleep game against Colorado because Colorado was
- 24:41Speaker 1: bad and you have to be really disciplined on the
- 24:44Speaker 1: road to take this as seriously as you're supposed to.
- 24:47Speaker 2: So it's a potential look ahead spot.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I think you can look ahead and still beat Colorado,
- 24:52Speaker 1: but the team can't feel that way about it.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Right?
- 24:55Speaker 1: And then you've got tough games coming up against Houston.
- 24:58Speaker 1: and BYU beyond that. And we haven't even touched on
- 25:02Speaker 1: what BYU did on Friday night, the home of the
- 25:04Speaker 1: Utes right here, ESPN 700.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Your texts are always welcome.
- 25:09Speaker 4: I got to tell you with what Morgan said about
- 25:13Speaker 4: Ricky in the post game, OC Ricky Johnson. So they,
- 25:18Speaker 4: he went on, I think he was the interview right
- 25:20Speaker 4: before Morgan. So Bill was just mentioning, Hey, we talked
- 25:22Speaker 4: with Ricky and he goes, did he kind of interrupts
- 25:25Speaker 4: Bill and says, wait, did he say anything?
- 25:28Speaker 2: And Bill goes, yeah, it was a good interview. And
- 25:31Speaker 2: he goes, wow.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Because apparently he's a very quiet guy in practice to
- 25:38Speaker 4: the point where Morgan feels like, I need to check
- 25:41Speaker 4: up on this guy a little bit.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Hey, are you doing okay? Yeah, yeah, I'm good, coach. Like, okay.
- 25:46Speaker 4: So he was joking, you know, tongue-in-cheek shocked that Ricky–
- 25:51Speaker 4: had something to say in the post game. That's the
- 25:53Speaker 4: kind of personality is he had something to say on
- 25:55Speaker 4: the field too.
- 25:56Speaker 2: He did. And he sounded great. And this is a
- 25:59Speaker 2: Utah football team.
- 26:00Speaker 1: That is five games into the season, still finding weapons,
- 26:04Speaker 1: still finding players that they can, they can lean on
- 26:07Speaker 1: a little bit. Semi tell longer gets his first career touchdown.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Great to see that. Not a, not a sexy stat line,
- 26:15Speaker 1: one catch for one yard for one touchdown, but a
- 26:18Speaker 1: nice play call on that play call, by the way,
- 26:21Speaker 1: That was so good that it fooled bill Riley. He
- 26:23Speaker 1: thought that the handoff had gone to way Sean and
- 26:25Speaker 1: way Sean had scored. And instead Devon had pulled and
- 26:29Speaker 1: thrown it to semi Talonga either way. Had he pushed
- 26:33Speaker 1: any given the ball to way Sean, he was going
- 26:35Speaker 1: to get in. Had he thrown the ball? Semi was
- 26:37Speaker 1: going to get in. I want to see more Daniel Bray.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I think we all do. Daniel Bray is one of
- 26:43Speaker 1: these guys that we know can do good things for
- 26:46Speaker 1: this offense. But right now you don't, you don't need
- 26:49Speaker 1: to color outside the lines. even though you have the
- 26:51Speaker 1: ability to color outside the lines, and you're 41-24 over
- 26:55Speaker 1: the Kansas Jayhawks and 5-0, like I mentioned, with everything
- 26:59Speaker 1: in front of you for this season. We're going to
- 27:02Speaker 1: get a break here and talk to Ari Temkin, but
- 27:06Speaker 1: I love that this text came in. Matt Rigby on
- 27:11Speaker 1: the text line.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I love this.
- 27:12Speaker 1: He says, all right, OC, what is the official company
- 27:15Speaker 1: line Saturday? Am I rooting for Notre Dame or am
- 27:19Speaker 1: I rooting against Notre Dame? college game day in Provo,
- 27:24Speaker 1: Notre Dame versus BYU top 10 matchup. First of all,
- 27:30Speaker 1: you should be happy that college game day chose to
- 27:33Speaker 1: come to this one instead of going to Indiana, Ohio state. Finally,
- 27:38Speaker 1: they're getting out of the tunnel vision and they're letting
- 27:41Speaker 1: this be a featured matchup.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Now it has more to do with Notre Dame that has.
- 27:45Speaker 1: To do with BYU, but you got to give credit
- 27:46Speaker 1: to BYU for what they've done. And for the big 12,
- 27:49Speaker 1: It's good to have this showcase opportunity. I know how
- 27:53Speaker 1: difficult it is. I would suggest that if you are
- 27:56Speaker 1: like a crimson-blooded Ute fan, you just decide you're not
- 28:00Speaker 1: rooting in this game at all.
- 28:02Speaker 2: You're just observing in this game.
- 28:04Speaker 1: But what is best for the University of Utah, not
- 28:06Speaker 1: just for the Big 12, but what is best for
- 28:09Speaker 1: the University of Utah football team, is that you are
- 28:14Speaker 1: undefeated going into November 7th, and that BYU is also
- 28:18Speaker 1: undefeated going into November 7th.
- 28:20Speaker 2: If BYU beats Notre.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Dame and continues to win between now and that Holy
- 28:27Speaker 1: War game in November, and Utah continues to win, and
- 28:31Speaker 1: we think they will, their favorite in all the games
- 28:32Speaker 1: before then, if you're able to Look at November 7th,
- 28:39Speaker 1: and Utah will have beaten Colorado, Houston, and Cincinnati. BYU
- 28:44Speaker 1: will have beaten Notre Dame, of course, this upcoming weekend.
- 28:47Speaker 1: And then they've got UCF and Arizona State. Those are
- 28:51Speaker 1: pretty soft games, if we're being honest. And they come
- 28:53Speaker 1: to Rice Echo Stadium undefeated in that game. We are
- 28:58Speaker 1: talking about BYU probably being no lower than the fifth-ranked
- 29:02Speaker 1: team in the country and potentially higher than that. What
- 29:06Speaker 1: is in Utah's best interest is that you have an
- 29:09Speaker 1: opportunity at home to beat a top five ranked team
- 29:13Speaker 1: in the country, an undefeated team. I know it's your rival.
- 29:17Speaker 1: You don't want to root for them to beat a
- 29:19Speaker 1: national power, but you get a chance to snatch all
- 29:24Speaker 1: of that away from BYU. If BYU beats Notre Dame
- 29:30Speaker 1: and then you beat BYU, now you.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Are a top five team in the country. potentially. You
- 29:36Speaker 2: are a top six team in the country. You might
- 29:39Speaker 2: be higher than that.
- 29:41Speaker 1: For that reason, my official company line is you got
- 29:45Speaker 1: to hope that BYU beats Notre Dame and then that
- 29:48Speaker 1: Utah beats BYU. I realize that as a Utah fan,
- 29:53Speaker 1: you don't wish good things upon the Cougs and upon
- 29:56Speaker 1: their fan base. The fan base, by the way, will
- 29:59Speaker 1: be So insufferable for the next three weeks, if they
- 30:03Speaker 1: can get this win against Notre Dame, which I don't
- 30:04Speaker 1: think they're going to get, but if they can, and
- 30:08Speaker 1: then BYU comes into Salt Lake city on November 7th, cocky,
- 30:14Speaker 1: full of themselves, confident that they're going to win this game.
- 30:18Speaker 1: And then Utah snatches all that glory away from them,
- 30:21Speaker 1: takes that. Oh, off the back of their record. It's
- 30:24Speaker 1: just a, it's a more meaningful victory. Already meaningful enough
- 30:28Speaker 1: because it's the Holy war, but it's more meaningful if
- 30:31Speaker 1: it is an undefeated BYU team. Thanks for asking the question.
- 30:35Speaker 1: That's my answer. I'll probably keep regurgitating that between now
- 30:41Speaker 1: and November 7th, every dang day on the show. And, uh,
- 30:44Speaker 1: our guy, Derek H cute.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Queued it up. He says, there's no amount of money
- 30:48Speaker 2: you could give me to root for BYU. So there
- 30:51Speaker 2: you go. Right on cue. I'm not offering any money.
- 30:53Speaker 2: We got some, some very convenient.
- 30:56Speaker 1: I'm not offering any money. You don't have to root
- 30:58Speaker 1: for BYU. That's why I said, just, you know, maybe
- 31:01Speaker 1: just don't root for anything here. Just observe and report.
- 31:06Speaker 2: All right.
- 31:07Speaker 1: We got to take a break. We'll come back with
- 31:08Speaker 1: Ari Temkin. It's the Sean O'Connell show ESPN, 700 92,
- 31:11Speaker 1: one FM. You're tuned to The Sean O'Connell Show from
- 31:18Speaker 1: the Murdoch Chevrolet studio.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in our
- 31:50Speaker 1: good friend from Big 12 Today on TuneIn Radio.
- 31:55Speaker 2: His name is Ari Temkin.
- 31:56Speaker 1: He's an encyclopedia of knowledge on all things Big 12. Ari,
- 32:00Speaker 1: welcome to the show once again.
- 32:02Speaker 2: How are you?
- 32:04Speaker 3: Oh, see, what's up, buddy? I'm good, man. How are you?
- 32:06Speaker 2: You know, it was a great weekend here in Salt
- 32:08Speaker 2: Lake City.
- 32:10Speaker 5: When.
- 32:11Speaker 1: When did you get the notification that Utah, Kansas would
- 32:15Speaker 1: be moved up a couple of hours, and what was
- 32:17Speaker 1: your reaction to it?
- 32:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess I didn't. And when I saw the
- 32:24Speaker 3: game had kicked off, I was very confused. And then,
- 32:28Speaker 3: you know, obviously heard about the situation with Tropical Storm Rachel,
- 32:32Speaker 3: and if anybody knows Rachel, you know that they're probably
- 32:34Speaker 3: working up a tropical storm themselves. So, no, that's a joke.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Probably a bad-tasted one, too. But it felt like from
- 32:44Speaker 3: where I was sitting, the weather looked perfect in Utah.
- 32:47Speaker 3: I don't know how it ended up, but there were
- 32:50Speaker 3: some weird weather games, including the one in Tempe as well.
- 32:55Speaker 3: So this is sort of the name of the game,
- 32:57Speaker 3: I guess, this time of year with games going on
- 33:00Speaker 3: in all different locations out of the Big 12.
- 33:02Speaker 2: It was very weird. I don't remember. I mean, I'm
- 33:04Speaker 2: sure I just don't remember. It's probably happened before.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I don't remember the last time if there was a
- 33:10Speaker 1: time when We went into a Friday night thinking that
- 33:14Speaker 1: the game was going to kick off and then you
- 33:16Speaker 1: get a text or a tweet or a notification like, Oh,
- 33:19Speaker 1: by the way, alter your Saturday plans. We're kicking this
- 33:23Speaker 1: thing off to two hours earlier. It was very strange,
- 33:26Speaker 1: especially since the bad weather that they were trying to.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Avoid did not come, didn't really come.
- 33:33Speaker 1: It ended up being like a perfect night at rice
- 33:36Speaker 1: cycle stadium.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Yeah. And credit the fans because, you know, when the
- 33:41Speaker 3: game kicked, it didn't really sound much different than you
- 33:45Speaker 3: would have expected it to given, you know, I'm sure
- 33:47Speaker 3: people were late getting there and not in their normal routine.
- 33:50Speaker 3: So it was very bizarre. You know, I, I guess
- 33:54Speaker 3: this is probably something I should have talked to Scott
- 33:57Speaker 3: Draper about today. We have mine every Monday and I,
- 33:59Speaker 3: I was talking about the forward pitch by Dampier, which
- 34:03Speaker 3: didn't look like one to me. But I did not
- 34:06Speaker 3: ask him about this. So that was one I probably
- 34:08Speaker 3: should have asked about, quite frankly.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Odd deal.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Ultimately, despite getting a little bit uncomfortable and tight in
- 34:16Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, Utah finds a way, and they end
- 34:19Speaker 1: up winning. Way Sean Parker puts a team on his
- 34:22Speaker 1: back yet again. And they stay 5-0. Now, I think
- 34:27Speaker 1: both teams have some things that they need to look
- 34:29Speaker 1: at coming out of a game like this, Kansas diced
- 34:33Speaker 1: up the Utah secondary in a way that I don't
- 34:35Speaker 1: think a lot of us anticipated that they would. And,
- 34:38Speaker 1: you know, if you're Kansas, you got oh so close
- 34:41Speaker 1: in a couple of scenarios. And after being perfect in
- 34:43Speaker 1: the red zone, coming into Rice Eccles Stadium, you left
- 34:47Speaker 1: some points on the board, one on just a drop
- 34:51Speaker 1: from a receiver and another on a call play a
- 34:54Speaker 1: play call. I think that Andy Colton, Nick, he would
- 34:56Speaker 1: probably like to have back, but your thoughts on, you know,
- 34:59Speaker 1: what Kansas takes away from a game like this, because
- 35:02Speaker 1: they came pretty close to making this really ugly for Utah.
- 35:08Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 35:08Speaker 3: And when it started out, it was like touchdown three
- 35:12Speaker 3: and out touchdown three and out. And it's like, Oh,
- 35:14Speaker 3: this is going to go quick. You know, this is,
- 35:16Speaker 3: this is good to get ugly. The fact that Kansas
- 35:18Speaker 3: is able to weather the storm, you know, get back
- 35:21Speaker 3: into it themselves, I think speaks to two things. One,
- 35:23Speaker 3: you know, Zeke Marshall, Isaiah Marshall, their quarterback is really
- 35:27Speaker 3: starting to play considerably better than what we saw for
- 35:29Speaker 3: him a couple of weeks ago, which is right on
- 35:31Speaker 3: time for Kansas fans because Kansas state is this weekend
- 35:34Speaker 3: and you haven't beaten them in nearly 18 years. And,
- 35:37Speaker 3: you know, they do have some disruptive players on their defense.
- 35:41Speaker 3: I think, D.K. McDonald's defense was very bad last year.
- 35:44Speaker 3: There are times early this year where it looked to
- 35:47Speaker 3: be equally as bad, and certainly in this game. I
- 35:50Speaker 3: think with what Morgan Scali and Kevin McGiven were pulling
- 35:53Speaker 3: out with the different formations, it was really remarkable to
- 35:57Speaker 3: see in certain plays. But I think Leroy Harris and
- 35:59Speaker 3: these guys are very disruptive up front for Kansas, which
- 36:02Speaker 3: is what led to some turnovers in short fields for
- 36:04Speaker 3: Kansas and got them kind of in position. But I
- 36:07Speaker 3: think you're right. Like, You know, Utah fans can overreact
- 36:10Speaker 3: to this and say, look at Kansas' record. Kansas is
- 36:13Speaker 3: a team trying to figure out what it has. I
- 36:15Speaker 3: don't think it's the worst team in the Big 12.
- 36:16Speaker 3: I think Colorado is most likely the worst team in
- 36:19Speaker 3: the Big 12, maybe West Virginia. But I still think
- 36:22Speaker 3: with Kansas, there's kind of a bunch we don't know
- 36:24Speaker 3: about them. And, you know, Utah, whatever went wrong and
- 36:27Speaker 3: however many points you gave up, they weren't expecting. Like this,
- 36:30Speaker 3: to me, just kind of fit exactly what we've seen
- 36:32Speaker 3: from them all year, which is, yeah, they may not
- 36:34Speaker 3: have played the best teams, but and we're not entirely
- 36:37Speaker 3: sure of how good these teams are that they play,
- 36:38Speaker 3: but they just take care of business, and they figure
- 36:40Speaker 3: out ways to get wins, and whether that's putting 40
- 36:43Speaker 3: points to the board or getting certain stops in goal-to-go situations,
- 36:47Speaker 3: that's what they do.
- 36:49Speaker 1: So Utah improves to 5-0. They're now the 11th-ranked team
- 36:52Speaker 1: in the country. Texas Tech right above them, and of course,
- 36:55Speaker 1: BYU remains undefeated on a Friday night as well, setting
- 37:00Speaker 1: up a game-day visit and all that stuff with Notre
- 37:03Speaker 1: Dame coming to Provo. What looking at this game, Notre
- 37:07Speaker 1: Dame BYU through the big 12 lens, not, not the
- 37:10Speaker 1: Utah fan lens, not the that's our hated rival lens, but.
- 37:15Speaker 2: How big is this opportunity for the big 12 conference?
- 37:19Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, it's humongous and, you know, look, I
- 37:22Speaker 3: get the Utah BYU rivalry, but this is why BYU
- 37:28Speaker 3: has had long wanted to join a major conference. You know,
- 37:32Speaker 3: what we're going to see on Saturday is, It was
- 37:34Speaker 3: exactly every hope and dream they had coming to fruition.
- 37:38Speaker 3: And that I think is, is an amazing story unto itself.
- 37:41Speaker 3: I mean, it's the first top 10 matchup ever in Provo.
- 37:44Speaker 3: It's I think the second time ever that game day
- 37:47Speaker 3: has been there, you know, and it's featuring two teams
- 37:49Speaker 3: and an eighth ranked BYU and a second ranked Notre
- 37:52Speaker 3: Dame that certainly have flaws. And, you know, I think
- 37:56Speaker 3: with a loss shouldn't move down much. At least that's
- 38:00Speaker 3: what the AP poll has shown us from the SEC's
- 38:02Speaker 3: vantage point. I mean, teams lose and don't really flinch.
- 38:05Speaker 3: We'll see if the same is true and afforded for BYU.
- 38:08Speaker 3: If they do in fact, lose this game, you know,
- 38:10Speaker 3: it's a tough spot, but I think at least coming
- 38:12Speaker 3: off the Iowa state game, you get a sense of,
- 38:16Speaker 3: you know, I said, going to the Iowa state game,
- 38:17Speaker 3: let's see what BYU can do through the air. They're
- 38:19Speaker 3: probably going to have to be, they can't be the
- 38:23Speaker 3: same team. They've been overly reliant on the run game
- 38:26Speaker 3: without LJ Martin. And I think we saw a little
- 38:28Speaker 3: bit of that. And, and, you know, with legend glass
- 38:31Speaker 3: or with them getting their tight end of the game going,
- 38:33Speaker 3: I think that makes me pretty optimistic. I think if
- 38:36Speaker 3: they didn't have this game in between and a legit
- 38:40Speaker 3: data point, Sean, I'd be a little bit concerned going
- 38:42Speaker 3: into this game because of how good Notre Dame is.
- 38:45Speaker 3: But given that we've seen it already and we know
- 38:47Speaker 3: that they're going to have to adjust, and we've seen
- 38:49Speaker 3: them adjust a little bit, it makes me optimistic that
- 38:52Speaker 3: BYU can keep this game close and maybe even win it.
- 38:54Speaker 3: And BYU, they are so good on defense in their
- 38:58Speaker 3: front seven. I think we're really seeing that. I mean,
- 39:01Speaker 3: you know, I'm assuming part of what Utah did against
- 39:06Speaker 3: Kansas was exactly what BYU did against Iowa State, and
- 39:09Speaker 3: that is kind of play heavy in the box and
- 39:14Speaker 3: force a quarterback to try to win. And in the
- 39:18Speaker 3: case of Jalen Rayner and Iowa State, there were very
- 39:20Speaker 3: few of those. In the case of Zeke Marshall and Kansas,
- 39:24Speaker 3: they were able to air it out a little bit,
- 39:26Speaker 3: but they certainly did not want Kansas to have an
- 39:28Speaker 3: effective run game going. um you know and and watching
- 39:32Speaker 3: utah's offense and how much in some ways it reminds
- 39:34Speaker 3: me of an anti-colonic you run offense you know i
- 39:37Speaker 3: can see why they were a little bit reluctant on
- 39:39Speaker 3: that i think the same was true with byu um
- 39:42Speaker 3: where they were just not going to let iowa state
- 39:43Speaker 3: and aiden floor beat them on the ground and they
- 39:45Speaker 3: didn't i mean ford has work ford has worst game
- 39:47Speaker 3: and BYU was able to win with that because Rainer
- 39:50Speaker 3: really couldn't make them pay.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Also, this weekend, you had Arizona improve to 5-1. You
- 40:00Speaker 1: had Houston improve to 5-1. Oklahoma State beats UCF. The
- 40:06Speaker 1: headliner of Texas Tech... one of the headliners with Texas Tech, inactive.
- 40:12Speaker 1: But the other players here that we've been talking about
- 40:15Speaker 1: these last few weeks that are entering the chat, like
- 40:18Speaker 1: Oklahoma State and Houston, and I think Arizona, sooner than later,
- 40:22Speaker 1: is going to have a lot to say, despite their
- 40:24Speaker 1: tough schedule, about who ends up in the conference championship
- 40:27Speaker 1: game this year.
- 40:29Speaker 2: You saw them all take care of business.
- 40:31Speaker 1: Who impressed you most this past weekend of the next tier,
- 40:35Speaker 1: the second tier of top teams?
- 40:37Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know what? Real quick, let me go
- 40:39Speaker 3: back to your last question because I don't know that
- 40:41Speaker 3: I adequately answered it. The Notre Dame-BYU game is such
- 40:44Speaker 3: a huge deal for the Big 12. It's as big
- 40:46Speaker 3: of a deal for the Big 12 as it is
- 40:48Speaker 3: for BYU, and we went through the historical context of
- 40:51Speaker 3: first time ever, second time ever. I don't know that
- 40:55Speaker 3: the Big 12, like the new Big 12, we'll call
- 40:59Speaker 3: it that, has ever had an opportunity quite like this.
- 41:03Speaker 3: The conference has had big games, and certainly historically the
- 41:05Speaker 3: conference has had big games. But for all intents and purposes,
- 41:08Speaker 3: this is a brand-new conference with a brand-new identity. And
- 41:12Speaker 3: this year, which leads us into this next question, the
- 41:14Speaker 3: Big 12 looks to be significantly more top-heavy than it's been.
- 41:18Speaker 3: I think that's what Week 6 showed us, that this
- 41:22Speaker 3: was a week in previous seasons, OC, where The Big
- 41:26Speaker 3: 12 may have spit up on itself a little bit
- 41:29Speaker 3: and have some surprising losses. Arizona going across three time
- 41:35Speaker 3: zones to play West Virginia on the East Coast in
- 41:38Speaker 3: a 9 a.m. local game, that's a spell of disaster
- 41:42Speaker 3: for a lot of teams. Houston going up to Kansas
- 41:46Speaker 3: State a week after they had to survive against UCF.
- 41:50Speaker 3: we're really seeing the league flex its muscles, which I
- 41:53Speaker 3: think leads right into this huge game on Saturday. There's
- 41:56Speaker 3: two big ones, one in the Big 12 and obviously
- 41:58Speaker 3: the BYU-Notterdam game. But if we're talking about a league
- 42:01Speaker 3: that wants to get multiple playoff bids, This is that opportunity.
- 42:06Speaker 3: This is that season. Last year, I'm not sure the
- 42:08Speaker 3: Big 12 was top-heavy enough, and it is. It's something
- 42:12Speaker 3: we've talked about all season. The Big 12 having five
- 42:15Speaker 3: teams in the top 20 this late in the season,
- 42:18Speaker 3: it's been a long time since the conference has had that.
- 42:21Speaker 3: And so, again, I think that just reflects that the
- 42:23Speaker 3: teams that were supposed to be good have ended up
- 42:25Speaker 3: being good. There's no surprise teams right now. I think
- 42:27Speaker 3: West Virginia was a team we thought maybe could be
- 42:29Speaker 3: a surprise team. I had Colorado. They're terrible. West Virginia
- 42:32Speaker 3: can't defend. K-State has got all kinds of issues, especially
- 42:35Speaker 3: along their offensive line. UCF can't finish, and I think
- 42:39Speaker 3: they've taken a major step back because of the quarterback situation.
- 42:43Speaker 3: So I think both of these questions sort of play
- 42:45Speaker 3: into each other. The Big 12 is a huge opportunity here.
- 42:48Speaker 3: And look, will the Big 12 earn two playoff bids
- 42:50Speaker 3: with a win over Notre Dame?
- 42:51Speaker 6: No.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Will they lose two playoff bids with a loss for
- 42:54Speaker 3: BYU to Notre Dame? No. But I just think with
- 42:57Speaker 3: what's playing out right now, like the Big 12 needed
- 42:59Speaker 3: there not to be surprise teams. It needed the teams
- 43:01Speaker 3: that were supposed to be good to stay good. And
- 43:04Speaker 3: that's what's happened. None of the teams, Houston lost to Tech.
- 43:07Speaker 3: So that drops them out of the top, you know,
- 43:08Speaker 3: that drops them not out of the top 25. But
- 43:12Speaker 3: since they started there, they stayed there. All the teams
- 43:14Speaker 3: that have started there have stayed there, even ones that
- 43:17Speaker 3: have sustained losses. And I think that speaks to the
- 43:19Speaker 3: trajectory of this conference. The SEC, you don't really know
- 43:22Speaker 3: what you're going to get week to week. I mean,
- 43:23Speaker 3: Kentucky is a team that's having a major surprise year
- 43:26Speaker 3: right now. This is a league of parity in many ways.
- 43:28Speaker 3: The SEC, I think the Big 12 is more in
- 43:32Speaker 3: line with what we've seen historically from the SEC with
- 43:34Speaker 3: powers that are flexing their muscles right now.
- 43:38Speaker 2: You just mentioned them.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Are you a believer in Houston or are you a
- 43:41Speaker 1: skeptic on Houston?
- 43:44Speaker 3: I'm a believer. I mean, do I think that they're
- 43:47Speaker 3: a Big 12 championship team? No, but I think they're
- 43:49Speaker 3: one of the five best teams in the Big 12.
- 43:50Speaker 3: You know, I mean, look, the game last week with
- 43:54Speaker 3: UCF is very similar to what UCF just had with
- 43:59Speaker 3: Oklahoma State this past week. UCF you know, puts together
- 44:03Speaker 3: these really dynamic first halves. And then second half has
- 44:05Speaker 3: just been a slog for them, specifically the third quarters.
- 44:09Speaker 3: You know, so what Connor Wigman is doing right now
- 44:12Speaker 3: is extremely surprising to me. You know, when we think
- 44:14Speaker 3: about the Big 12, you know, the best quarterback in
- 44:19Speaker 3: this conference, I mean, certainly he's a guy that statistically
- 44:23Speaker 3: and wins-wise stood up. But I think his last two weeks,
- 44:26Speaker 3: and in particular what he did on Saturday through the air,
- 44:30Speaker 3: you know, it's very impressive. And I'm not sure Kansas
- 44:34Speaker 3: State's very good, certainly had higher expectations for them. But
- 44:37Speaker 3: I just think going up to Manhattan, where they're coming
- 44:39Speaker 3: off a bye week, like that's a really tough spot
- 44:42Speaker 3: in a game in which everything, I mean, there's a
- 44:46Speaker 3: lot of historical context there. Michael Bishop is the quarterback's
- 44:49Speaker 3: coach now for Houston, obviously the legendary Kansas State quarterback.
- 44:53Speaker 3: Willie Fritz is from the Kansas City area. He's now
- 44:55Speaker 3: 3-0 defensively. against K-State, including two wins at Houston against
- 45:00Speaker 3: K-State and then one against Tulane. Again, do I think
- 45:05Speaker 3: they're one of the three best teams? No, I think
- 45:07Speaker 3: that's pretty clearly defined. It's BYU, Utah, and Texas Tech.
- 45:11Speaker 3: But I certainly think Houston is one of these top
- 45:13Speaker 3: five teams that is pretty good and can knock off
- 45:17Speaker 3: anybody given some of the right circumstances. They're really good defensively.
- 45:20Speaker 3: I think they did a really good job in their
- 45:22Speaker 3: past defense this week after being exposed a few times.
- 45:26Speaker 3: And then I, I mean, I put a lot of
- 45:28Speaker 3: it on Wigman. I mean, Wigman was really fantastic. Patrick Overmeyer,
- 45:31Speaker 3: their tight end had four touchdowns at eight catches, four
- 45:34Speaker 3: of them for touchdowns and had big plays across the
- 45:37Speaker 3: entire game to really, you know, create that separation for,
- 45:40Speaker 3: for Houston.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Ari, I could pick your brain all day.
- 45:44Speaker 1: We got to try to stay on clock because we
- 45:46Speaker 1: got a Morgan Scali press conference coming up here shortly.
- 45:49Speaker 1: So appreciate your time again, my friend, let's talk again
- 45:53Speaker 1: next week.
- 45:54Speaker 3: Love those frosty Utah helmets, by the way. Those were sick.
- 45:58Speaker 3: And Scali's, his sweatshirt, too. That was great. Take care, guys.
- 46:05Speaker 2: They sold a bunch of those sweatshirts, by the way.
- 46:08Speaker 1: The merchandising undefeated at the University of Utah with the
- 46:12Speaker 1: frosty helmets and, of course, the hoodies that matched them.
- 46:18Speaker 1: So credit to all the fan base for showing up
- 46:21Speaker 1: in white.
- 46:22Speaker 4: And.
- 46:23Speaker 1: wearing the new gear, and the hand-painted helmet looked awesome
- 46:27Speaker 1: up close.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Beautiful, beautiful helmet.
- 46:30Speaker 1: Not my favorite of the hand-painteds, but probably top five,
- 46:35Speaker 1: maybe top five. All right, we'll take another quick one here.
- 46:38Speaker 1: We'll get you ready for the Morgan Scali press conference.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Big NFL weekend, especially for one former Ute. We got
- 46:45Speaker 1: to at least give a shout-out. It's the Sean O'Connell
- 46:47Speaker 1: Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 46:54Speaker 7: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 46:57Speaker 7: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM. We're going to.
- 47:06Speaker 1: Make this really quick. How about your boy Snoop? Tyler
- 47:12Speaker 1: Huntley getting the start for the Baltimore Ravens. Goes 10
- 47:16Speaker 1: for 10 down the stretch with a rushing touchdown also
- 47:20Speaker 1: to complete a comeback and get the win. a performance
- 47:25Speaker 1: like this from Tyler Huntley, as crazy as things are
- 47:28Speaker 1: in the NFL, especially for backup quarterbacks. And we've talked
- 47:32Speaker 1: a lot about how he, he fits the Falcons. So
- 47:35Speaker 1: specifically Tyler Huntley probably got himself another two years of
- 47:41Speaker 1: NFL money by looking that good. When he was called
- 47:44Speaker 1: upon 2432, 201 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions.
- 47:49Speaker 2: He was sacked three times.
- 47:52Speaker 1: He ran for 20 yards and a touchdown, obviously. And
- 47:57Speaker 1: most importantly, helped engineer a comeback that finished in overtime
- 48:01Speaker 1: for the Baltimore Ravens. They became the first quarterback to
- 48:04Speaker 1: go 10 for 10 down the stretch in fourth quarter
- 48:07Speaker 1: in overtime to do so. Good for Tyler Huntley, man.
- 48:11Speaker 2: Good to see it. Baltimore Ravens improved to 4-1.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Atlanta, who looked like maybe they were going to show
- 48:19Speaker 1: some people some things, they fall to 2-3 on the
- 48:21Speaker 1: season today. And Michael Penix Jr. now has a rib injury.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Drake London, by the way, seven catches, 118 yards in
- 48:34Speaker 1: this one. Penix ended up throwing for 274 yards. Sorry,
- 48:36Speaker 1: Penix threw for 240. Tua talking about Lowe added another 34,
- 48:39Speaker 1: but they threw for 274 yards. And not enough to
- 48:41Speaker 1: beat Snoop, baby.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Can't do it. Good for Tyler Huntley.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Happy to see that from a former Ute who has
- 48:56Speaker 1: found his niche and has exploited that and has done
- 48:58Speaker 1: a really good job and just got his team an
- 49:01Speaker 1: important win.
- 49:03Speaker 2: All right, we'll take another break here.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Morgan Scali and his weekly press conference next on the
- 49:09Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 49:14Speaker 8: I have a friend that loses a lot of golf
- 49:16Speaker 8: balls anyway. He'd appreciate those back. Our other next door neighbor,
- 49:22Speaker 8: women's tennis, getting ready for the ITA regionals kicks off
- 49:26Speaker 8: tomorrow in Provo. So good luck to the Lady Utes.
- 49:29Speaker 8: Volleyball is in a tight race, man, at the top
- 49:32Speaker 8: of the Big 12 standings. And they host a ranked
- 49:35Speaker 8: BYU team coming in Thursday night to Huntsman Center, I expect.
- 49:38Speaker 8: A great crowd for that one. And then extremely well represented,
- 49:44Speaker 8: the Utes were extremely well represented this past week as
- 49:48Speaker 8: the U.S. ski team announced its rosters for the season.
- 49:52Speaker 8: A combined seven current and former Utes were included on
- 49:56Speaker 8: those rosters. That is big time. Go Utes there. Wrapping
- 50:02Speaker 8: up the game, just watching film. Really good start to
- 50:07Speaker 8: the game, both the defensive side of the ball and
- 50:08Speaker 8: the offensive side of the ball. Kind of a lull
- 50:13Speaker 8: there in the second quarter that started really with a
- 50:15Speaker 8: fourth down stop on their part. A couple of chunk
- 50:20Speaker 8: plays led to a touchdown and then an interception that
- 50:25Speaker 8: leads to points going into halftime. So really the momentum
- 50:29Speaker 8: was on their side for sure going into halftime. talked
- 50:33Speaker 8: a lot about this in the locker room at halftime,
- 50:37Speaker 8: but this is a game of momentum, and you've got
- 50:39Speaker 8: to go steal it back. It doesn't just magically happen
- 50:42Speaker 8: for you. Just because we're the home team, you've got
- 50:45Speaker 8: to go out there and establish yourselves. I thought Devin
- 50:48Speaker 8: and the leaders did a really good job in the
- 50:49Speaker 8: locker room of getting these guys ready. So, good stop
- 50:52Speaker 8: on defense to start the third quarter. A touchdown by
- 50:57Speaker 8: the offense, and they responded back and forth for a
- 51:00Speaker 8: little bit. The Again, tell the tape, at least on
- 51:03Speaker 8: the defensive side of the ball, were those red zone stops.
- 51:06Speaker 8: They were 2-5 in the red zone in terms of touchdowns.
- 51:09Speaker 8: We were 5-5. The big fourth down stop, the way
- 51:13Speaker 8: Sean touched down after that really kind of sealed the deal.
- 51:17Speaker 8: And then we were able to get stops down the way.
- 51:22Speaker 8: Hard to win in college football and really proud of
- 51:24Speaker 8: our guys. Toughness they showed, the resilience and Grateful for
- 51:29Speaker 8: another win. We've got Colorado on the road. They're coming
- 51:34Speaker 8: off a bye, so I know that they're going to
- 51:35Speaker 8: be prepared and ready. Got a couple of Utes on
- 51:38Speaker 8: that squad with Isaac Wilson and Stokes on the defensive
- 51:43Speaker 8: side of the ball, so they know all about the Utes.
- 51:46Speaker 8: Respect Coach Sanders a lot and what he's done with
- 51:49Speaker 8: that program. They're going to be ready. Crowd's going to
- 51:52Speaker 8: be awesome, and it'll be a good challenge for our guys.
- 51:57Speaker 8: With that, Justin, what question do you have for me, dude?
- 52:00Speaker 8: Me right here. Okay. It's a two-parter. First, he says,
- 52:03Speaker 8: good win on Saturday. What caused Kansas to carve up
- 52:07Speaker 8: your defensive backfield like a cornfield?
- 52:10Speaker 3: Wow.
- 52:11Speaker 8: Tell us how you really feel.
- 52:13Speaker 9: And then, why is the defensive end not getting sacks
- 52:17Speaker 9: after the last five games?
- 52:19Speaker 8: After the last five games. Okay. In terms of.
- 52:24Speaker 8: You know, them carving up our defense. I would say,
- 52:27Speaker 8: you know, a couple things were tempo where our guys
- 52:33Speaker 8: weren't necessarily responding well enough. You know, the quarterback made
- 52:38Speaker 8: some really good throws and that, you know, Pickett and
- 52:41Speaker 8: some of those guys made some really good catches. Now, again,
- 52:45Speaker 8: we're all about pass efficiency and, you know, 17 point
- 52:51Speaker 8: something of completion, not good enough. Not even close to
- 52:54Speaker 8: good enough. However, 51% completion percentage, definitely good enough. So, yes,
- 53:02Speaker 8: they're throwing. And when you can make them one-dimensional, again,
- 53:05Speaker 8: their strength coming in, they were number one in the
- 53:06Speaker 8: conference in rushing offense. Number one in the conference in
- 53:09Speaker 8: rushing offense. And I think we limited them to 58
- 53:11Speaker 8: yards rushing. And so you make them one-dimensional doing something
- 53:15Speaker 8: that you don't think they do necessarily well enough. Now,
- 53:18Speaker 8: he did. He threw the ball and completed it. However,
- 53:21Speaker 8: 51% completion percentage, make them one-dimensional, 58 yards rushing, we'll
- 53:26Speaker 8: take that. We will take that. Now, are there some
- 53:29Speaker 8: things that we need to clean up on the back end?
- 53:31Speaker 8: You bet. Getting set quicker, a couple communication issues, penalties
- 53:36Speaker 8: that gave them longer yardage situations. So there's definitely stuff
- 53:41Speaker 8: to clean up there, Justin, and we've got the guys
- 53:44Speaker 8: to do it. So I think on the season, I
- 53:48Speaker 8: think we're second in the entire country in pass efficiency defense.
- 53:53Speaker 8: So we're doing some really good things there in terms
- 53:56Speaker 8: of our defensive ends. Bless you, Gesundheit. Getting sacks. I
- 54:04Speaker 8: don't care where the sacks come from.
- 54:06Speaker 7: I don't.
- 54:07Speaker 8: In 2014, Justin, we led the nation in sacks. We
- 54:11Speaker 8: had 55. 55. And you know what? Sacks go into
- 54:16Speaker 8: rush defense. And you know what we were in the
- 54:18Speaker 8: country in rush defense that year? With 55 sacks, we
- 54:22Speaker 8: were 41st in the country. You know where we are
- 54:26Speaker 8: in the country right now in rush defense? We're top 10.
- 54:29Speaker 8: So if you were to say, would you rather have
- 54:31Speaker 8: good rush defense and less sacks, I'd say sign me
- 54:34Speaker 8: up right now. And Yes, I want sacks. Everyone wants sacks.
- 54:40Speaker 8: You want those disruptive plays at the same time. If
- 54:42Speaker 8: I'm getting max protection every single down and they're trying
- 54:46Speaker 8: to protect because they know we have good defensive ends,
- 54:48Speaker 8: then okay. You've just got to find ways to get
- 54:51Speaker 8: sacks other places. I'm not concerned one bit about the sacks.
- 54:58Speaker 9: Coming into the season, there's a lot of questions about
- 55:00Speaker 9: your offensive line being able to just start five new guys.
- 55:03Speaker 8: Where would you say you're at right now?
- 55:05Speaker 9: It seems like they've done really well to this point,
- 55:06Speaker 9: but how have you kind of graded them out internally
- 55:08Speaker 9: in your mind?
- 55:10Speaker 8: I would say really good. Not knowing what we were
- 55:15Speaker 8: going to have and with the transfers and we knew
- 55:18Speaker 8: the guys currently in the program, but the way Coach
- 55:21Speaker 8: Gross and Coach Gerke have had those guys come along
- 55:26Speaker 8: and by the way, Big 12 O-line of the week, baby.
- 55:31Speaker 8: Beef of the week, I guess is what they call it. Anyway,
- 55:33Speaker 8: congratulations to those guys because they have worked their tails off.
- 55:37Speaker 8: You look at where we are right now in the
- 55:40Speaker 8: Big 12. It's 7.19 yards per play. That's 9th in
- 55:45Speaker 8: the country and 1st in the Big 12. It doesn't
- 55:47Speaker 8: happen without a great offensive line. Those guys are playing really,
- 55:50Speaker 8: really well. Zaraway Williams playing really elite football. The rest
- 55:57Speaker 8: of those guys are gelling. Yes, we're going to continue
- 56:00Speaker 8: to have. This was a really good Kansas defensive front.
- 56:03Speaker 8: It really is. They're active. They're long levered. They cause
- 56:06Speaker 8: issues with some of their stunts. I thought our guys
- 56:10Speaker 8: did a really nice job. Eighth in the country in
- 56:13Speaker 8: rushing offense. Second in the Big 12 with 238 yards
- 56:15Speaker 8: a game. Yeah, after five games, if you were to
- 56:20Speaker 8: tell me that that was going to be the case,
- 56:22Speaker 8: those were going to be the numbers, I'd be, woo-hoo, lovely. Yeah,
- 56:28Speaker 8: so really good job by Coach McGiven and Coach Gross
- 56:33Speaker 8: and that crew.
- 56:34Speaker 1: If it's Isaac Wilson at quarterback, what advantage does that
- 56:38Speaker 1: give you guys for pairing?
- 56:39Speaker 8: Because you know him so well, but also he knows
- 56:42Speaker 8: your defense really well.
- 56:43Speaker 1: What's kind of that dynamic going to be like in
- 56:45Speaker 1: preparation this week?
- 56:46Speaker 8: Yeah, and he did a really good job as a
- 56:49Speaker 8: scout team quarterback and really smart. He's bright. You look
- 56:52Speaker 8: at the throws that he makes on the outside, he
- 56:55Speaker 8: has the arm talent, you know, but it's not as
- 57:02Speaker 8: big of a deal, in my opinion, as I think
- 57:05Speaker 8: people could make it out to be. You know, he's
- 57:08Speaker 8: definitely done a great job of being developed at Colorado,
- 57:11Speaker 8: and he's going to know, obviously, there's some things, you know, terminology-wise,
- 57:16Speaker 8: and Stokes as well. Jason Stokes is going to know
- 57:22Speaker 8: some things, but at the same time, we have a
- 57:24Speaker 8: feel for his strengths and weaknesses. I think at the
- 57:28Speaker 8: end of the day, again, it's still a team game,
- 57:32Speaker 8: and I don't read too much into it.
- 57:37Speaker 5: Morgan, plenty of new head coaches struggle in their first year.
- 57:41Speaker 6: I'm sure you faced your adversity, but here you are, 5-0,
- 57:45Speaker 6: 9th in total offense, 18th in total defense.
- 57:47Speaker 8: What's been the key overall to this team and your
- 57:50Speaker 8: early success? Good players. Good players, good coaches, a culture
- 57:57Speaker 8: of team-first mentality. But we're five games in. We're still
- 58:03Speaker 8: learning about ourselves, still learning about our strengths and weaknesses,
- 58:06Speaker 8: finding ways to get better and improve. It's a program
- 58:12Speaker 8: that I've been at, so I've seen what works, what
- 58:15Speaker 8: doesn't work, and I'm not having to go to a
- 58:18Speaker 8: new place where I don't know the donor base. There's
- 58:22Speaker 8: a lot of advantages that I already had. But again.
- 58:29Speaker 8: Players buying into the team culture and the coaches all
- 58:34Speaker 8: speaking the same language. It's a really fun group to
- 58:38Speaker 8: coach and great coaches that are very loyal. Just got
- 58:43Speaker 8: to keep it going.
- 58:45Speaker 1: You added multiple transfer portal receivers, but Ricky Johnson coming
- 58:48Speaker 1: off the big game.
- 58:49Speaker 2: I'm just curious, when did you realize.
- 58:50Speaker 9: That he could be a guy that would contribute for
- 58:52Speaker 9: you to this degree in 2026?
- 58:54Speaker 8: When we saw him in spring ball. He's a dynamic
- 58:56Speaker 8: wide receiver and really pleased with the distribution. We have
- 59:04Speaker 8: eight guys, eight guys with five or more catches on
- 59:08Speaker 8: the roster, and which probably goes back to the question
- 59:13Speaker 8: you had in the press conference about is he keying
- 59:18Speaker 8: in on Pagan and going back? He's just going through
- 59:22Speaker 8: his reads. I was very pleased with how he was
- 59:25Speaker 8: going through his reads and and dealing the football to
- 59:29Speaker 8: the different wide receivers. You saw Creed have a catch,
- 59:34Speaker 8: miss on another one. You had Ricky obviously getting his catches,
- 59:37Speaker 8: the touchdown pass to Noah Benny. You know, Sammy getting
- 59:43Speaker 8: his catch. That was awesome. But I think we're doing
- 59:46Speaker 8: a really good job of distribution. I think Devin right now,
- 59:49Speaker 8: proud of him too because he's efficient, 15th in the nation.
- 59:53Speaker 8: second in the Big 12 in terms of passing efficiency,
- 59:56Speaker 8: so doing really well when he's throwing the ball. Had
- 59:59Speaker 8: the one interception, which in my opinion was all about
- 1:00:03Speaker 8: bad technique, not getting his hips involved in the throw.
- 1:00:09Speaker 8: And then the fumble was kind of a freak deal,
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: but very pleased with the distribution. But that You know,
- 1:00:19Speaker 8: when you have the playmakers that you do, you don't
- 1:00:21Speaker 8: know who's going to end up having the hot hand.
- 1:00:24Speaker 8: It just so happened that it was Ricky. And he's
- 1:00:27Speaker 8: got really good speed, unbelievable, you know, under direct, like
- 1:00:33Speaker 8: just competing for the ball, you know, high percentage that
- 1:00:37Speaker 8: he's going to come down with it in one-on-ones all
- 1:00:39Speaker 8: throughout spring ball, all throughout fall camp and man coverage.
- 1:00:42Speaker 8: He just seemed a way to find the football. He
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: can play on the outside. He can also play on
- 1:00:47Speaker 8: the inside. We haven't necessarily used him as much on
- 1:00:49Speaker 8: the inside, but really, really dynamic wide receiver. Morgan, you've
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: long said.
- 1:00:55Speaker 9: That you feel like you have two starting quarterbacks on
- 1:00:57Speaker 9: this roster of Bird and Devin. I'm just curious, not
- 1:01:01Speaker 9: a lot of college football programs have that set up
- 1:01:03Speaker 9: where they have two guys that can start. I guess
- 1:01:06Speaker 9: the first part of this question is just why was
- 1:01:08Speaker 9: it so important for you to get two guys given
- 1:01:10Speaker 9: just how expensive quarterbacks are in the open market and
- 1:01:13Speaker 9: be Do you expect this to be kind of something
- 1:01:15Speaker 9: that Utah does.
- 1:01:16Speaker 8: Moving forward or even other programs do moving forward.
- 1:01:19Speaker 9: Just given injuries impacting quarterbacks and other things like that?
- 1:01:23Speaker 8: I think that there's probably more programs than you'd think
- 1:01:29Speaker 8: that have two quarterbacks that could start. What's unusual about
- 1:01:36Speaker 8: our situation is the willingness of a backup to play
- 1:01:42Speaker 8: a different role. um, to play more than just a quarterback.
- 1:01:46Speaker 8: And I think, um, if, if more guys were willing
- 1:01:49Speaker 8: to do that, I don't, you know, I don't know
- 1:01:51Speaker 8: if that's something the office coordinators love, you know, it's,
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: it's worked out for us and it's, it's working out because,
- 1:01:58Speaker 8: you know, both those guys can run it, both can catch,
- 1:02:01Speaker 8: both can throw. And so, um, you know, what I
- 1:02:05Speaker 8: like to see that going forward. Yes. Cause again, as
- 1:02:09Speaker 8: a defensive coordinator, I know the issues that it, it presents, um,
- 1:02:13Speaker 8: you know, is it always going to happen like that?
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: And are you always going to stay healthy?
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: No.
- 1:02:19Speaker 8: And you have to have a plan for, for if
- 1:02:21Speaker 8: that doesn't work out. And, and Kevin's always been great
- 1:02:25Speaker 8: with that as well. So. Well, um, Like I said,
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: the distribution and the ability to get different people the
- 1:02:48Speaker 8: ball makes you unpredictable. I think if it's way Sean,
- 1:02:52Speaker 8: way Sean, way Sean, it's easy for people to load
- 1:02:55Speaker 8: the box and say, okay. The other thing are the
- 1:02:59Speaker 8: hits that running backs take over and over and over again.
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: It is a car crash every tackle for the most part.
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: And so just making sure player load-wise you're doing everything
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: you can to keep him healthy. And yes, does he
- 1:03:15Speaker 8: want the ball? You bet. Any competitor does. But it's
- 1:03:19Speaker 8: also what's best for the team, and he understands that too.
- 1:03:24Speaker 8: So I think we're doing a really good job of
- 1:03:31Speaker 8: distributing the ball and He is so valuable in so
- 1:03:37Speaker 8: many ways beyond what you see on TV because if
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: he's blocking downfield, you're probably not going to see that,
- 1:03:45Speaker 8: but we see it, and that's why the NFL scouts
- 1:03:48Speaker 8: love him right now. Another question. Yes. Since you've taken over,
- 1:03:54Speaker 8: you've talked a lot about the talent within the state.
- 1:03:57Speaker 8: You've embraced the slogan, We Are Utah. I'd be curious,
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: what does that mean when it comes to recruiting specifically? Well, um,
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: you're not just going to recruit and, and offer kids
- 1:04:10Speaker 8: in state just because they're in state kids. They have
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: to be able to play at this level. The great
- 1:04:17Speaker 8: thing is, is that they, they can more and more teams.
- 1:04:21Speaker 8: I mean, every sec team, big 10, uh, you name it,
- 1:04:25Speaker 8: they're coming into Utah, you know, and, you know, particularly
- 1:04:29Speaker 8: for your offensive defensive lineman. Um, And it goes to
- 1:04:35Speaker 8: the quality of high school coaching that's going on in
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: state as well. Really good quality high school coaching. How
- 1:04:42Speaker 8: competitive our kids are in state. And, you know, I just,
- 1:04:48Speaker 8: every time I see a Utah guy out of state,
- 1:04:52Speaker 8: you know, excelling at a different program, I'm just like, man,
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: he eats at me. And so... Just doing everything we can.
- 1:04:59Speaker 8: We know we're not going to keep all of them.
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: We know we're not going to be 100% on projection,
- 1:05:05Speaker 8: but doing the best you can to make sure that
- 1:05:08Speaker 8: every high school coach, every recruit knows that that's a
- 1:05:12Speaker 8: big priority here.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Take two more for Coach.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: Morning.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: Last couple games, really good starts.
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: There's been a lull either right before the half or
- 1:05:22Speaker 6: right after the half.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: Yeah, like I said, I think you'd like to be
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: able to blow everyone out.
- 1:05:41Speaker 8: But they have scholarship players too and what we have
- 1:05:44Speaker 8: to do is, okay, what was the reason? And it
- 1:05:47Speaker 8: just seems, you know, there's different There's different aspects as
- 1:05:52Speaker 8: to why things don't go as planned. Maybe it's a misfire.
- 1:06:00Speaker 8: A Devon to Creed and it was a misfire. Whereas
- 1:06:04Speaker 8: you complete that thing and okay, now we're still going.
- 1:06:10Speaker 8: It could be a penalty that sets you back. It
- 1:06:14Speaker 8: could be a number of things. But yes, we want
- 1:06:19Speaker 8: to be more efficient. I think we're pretty efficient. 7.19
- 1:06:24Speaker 8: yards per play is pretty good. Sixth in the nation
- 1:06:28Speaker 8: in scoring offense, second in the nation, first in the
- 1:06:30Speaker 8: Big 12 in pass defensive efficiency. In terms of an
- 1:06:35Speaker 8: overall glance at things, you're really pleased, but there's definitely
- 1:06:39Speaker 8: things that you're saying, okay, this is what's keeping us
- 1:06:41Speaker 8: from even being better. A lot of it is not necessarily...
- 1:06:49Speaker 8: What they're doing, it's what we're doing to ourselves, whether
- 1:06:52Speaker 8: it be a turnover, a penalty. But it seems at
- 1:06:58Speaker 8: different parts of the game. The one consistent is we're
- 1:07:01Speaker 8: starting out strong. The second thing, and for the most part,
- 1:07:06Speaker 8: I think three of our five games, even close to
- 1:07:09Speaker 8: four of our five games, we've done a good job
- 1:07:11Speaker 8: coming out of halftime.
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: So.
- 1:07:15Speaker 8: I think people think of the Iowa State deal, and
- 1:07:17Speaker 8: then they think of that second quarter. Well, it may
- 1:07:20Speaker 8: happen any time in the game, and you've got to
- 1:07:22Speaker 8: be able to respond, and our guys have. So I'm
- 1:07:25Speaker 8: grateful for that.
- 1:07:26Speaker 7: Last question.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Morgan, offensive line. Going back to.
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: The offensive line, Isaiah Garcia was someone that you guys
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: talked a.
- 1:07:35Speaker 10: Lot about back in spring and early fall.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: He's been on the injury report the last two weeks
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: as out.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Just what is his status?
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Is he out for the season?
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Just what does his.
- 1:07:43Speaker 8: Future look like? He's back practicing this week.
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:07:48Speaker 8: Good to have him back. Love Ike. Thank you.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: Sneaky big update there right at the end.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: Good question from Sammy about Ike Garcia. Love to hear that.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: And Morgan Scali did already allude to this, but the
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: University of Utah offensive line earned O line of the
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: week honors in the big 12. I, I didn't know
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: we were calling them the Wasatch front. The official junk
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: mail says nickname, the Wasatch front. Oh, I gave the
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: way for the youths to rack up 545 yards of
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: total offense. I mean, it's a perfect name for an
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: offensive line at one of three schools really in the state.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: Weber state could have claimed it. BYU could try to
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: claim it, but Utah took it. The Wasatch front big
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: Al Harrison and zero way Williams and company.
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: So better, better a Wasatch related nickname in sports wall
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: of the Wasatch, Nick Raimondo, RSL legendary goalie, or now
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: Wasatch front Utah offensive line.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: I mean, while the Wasatch still wins because sweet micro
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Mondo's career also is far more impressive than even this
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: very impressive five game stretch for.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: The Wasatch front. Yes.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: And that just, this just screams Gerky to me, 8
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: 7 7 3 5 3 0 700. This, I would
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: be shocked if this was not Gerky making some comment
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: that he, that he accidentally ended up naming the, the
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: offensive line.
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: Wasatch front Dave Hale. Can you call and confirm?
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: My guy, Dave Hale. Oh man.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: I got, got a really interesting text here. A long one.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: I want to make sure we hit on.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: Okay. This is from David on the text line. Oh, see,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: what is Utah doing to address the defensive line? Safeties
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: and linebackers are leading the team in tackles. First of all,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: starting right there. That is always the case every single year.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: And in every single level of football, most teams in football,
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: your leading tackler is a linebacker in 90% of cases.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: It's a linebacker. And if it's not a linebacker, it's
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: a safety. That's how it's going to be until AI
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: kills us all.
- 1:10:08Speaker 8: All right.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: And AI will lead the team into tackles.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Those positions are supposed to be your tackling machines, your
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: defensive line. Unfortunately, for them has to gobble up blocks.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: And that is part of the further comment made. So
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: we'll go to that. There's nobody on this D line
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: that demands a double team, like players of the past,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: like Steve Fita, like you photo, Sione Pua and star
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: low to the LA. I actually don't think that's a
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: hundred percent true. I think that what you're getting now
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: in college football is not like, if you watch, if
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: you go back and you watch every play that this
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: team has played this year, There are certainly going to
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: be situations in which either Jaimoa is double teamed or
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: Pupu Cepulona is double teamed or Carson Kalfusi is double teamed.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I understand your point in your saying that there's no
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: interior defensive lineman on this team that an opposing offense
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: has to game plan around.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: That is accurate. That is true.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Those types of individuals are incredibly rare. And by the way,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: Sione Pua and Steve Fafita played next to one another.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: So you were screwed because you couldn't game plan to
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: one or the other of them. And if you did,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: the other guy was going to go off, right? I mean,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: we'd have to ask Pitt. That might've been what happened
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: in that Fiesta Bowl where they were just like, this
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Pua guy is going to be an NFL stud. We
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: got to double team him every play.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: And then.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: Steve Fafita was just like, oh, cool, I'm getting single-blocked
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: on every play. I'm going to become the Fiesta Bowl
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: MVP here. So your point is well made that there's
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: not an individual guy that everybody knows, everybody in the
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: conference knows, like, hey, you got to stop 98. You
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: got to stop 51. You got to stop 90, or
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: he's going to ruin your day offensively. I also think
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: that we, and I'm probably guilty of this, that we
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: overstate how many of those guys exist at any level
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: of football. Once you get past high school, you should
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: not have somebody who can do that on a regular basis.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: In the NFL, there's like five of these guys. Like,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: there's just not that many. Aaron Donald got us all
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: thinking about this. All right. you have to know where
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: Aaron Donald is and you have to either slide protection
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: or chip or double team. Oh, and now miles Garrett
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: is going to be on that same defensive line. And
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: when they play together, it's a problem that you can't solve,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: but the absence of those individuals on this offense, or
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: excuse me, on this defensive line for the university of Utah,
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: I don't think is overly problematic because counting on one
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: of those guys to exist on your defensive line is
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: like counting on a serious luxury, right? There's probably 10
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: of those guys in all of college football. Would we
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: like for one of them to be at the University
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: of Utah this year? Like a top defensive tackle who's
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: going to be a first or second round draft pick? Yeah,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: we would all love that. But how many of those
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: guys are there in the Big 12? Is Keanu Taunovasa
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: that at BYU? He would have been a captain at Utah.
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: He's a captain at BYU. Does Keanu Taunovasa demand a
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: double team every play?
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: No.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Is he really good? Does he make you pay sometimes
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: when you're single blocking him?
- 1:13:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: We keep going.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: This is the biggest hole in the program. Utah has
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: adequate D-line personnel, but nobody is elite. Elite D-line create
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: turnovers through pressure.
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Is it development?
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: Is it size strength? You can't teach size. I'd like
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: to hear your take on the defensive line. If Utah
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: can't fix this today, are there any massive bodies in
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: the works for next year? Utah will need 45-plus points
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: from offensive production to beat Houston, BYU, and Arizona. These
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: teams will put up points on this defense with the
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: average D-line play. Cornerbacks are tougher and nastier at the
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: line of scrimmage. Smack somebody's lips off the neutral zone
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: a few times. Shut down those timid passing alleys. David,
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: I'm being honest with you. This text makes less sense
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: this week than any other time you could have sent it.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Kansas ran for 2.8 yards per carry. Do you think
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: that was a function of the corners? Do you think
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: that that was the safeties coming downhill that caused that?
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: I know that you're not looking at a stat sheet
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: that tells you that Jai Moa ends up with multiple
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: digit tackles every single game, but what these guys are
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: doing on the Utah defensive line, the interior defensive line,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: especially has been pretty impressive defensively. especially this last week,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: Kansas couldn't get the ball going on. And you just
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: heard Morgan Scali talk about it in the game plan. He,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: he admitted, he said, look, we thought that we needed
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: to make them pass and we wanted to take away
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: their run prowess because that's something that they were very,
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: very good at Kansas. Even after this game is still
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: one of the, the top six run offenses in the conference.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: Utah decided they wanted to take that away and Kansas
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: couldn't run.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: It's a team effort.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: It's not just guys on the interior defensive line that
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: are responsible for this, but they are very responsible for it.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: And they're doing a good enough job without producing a
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: ton of, a ton of numbers themselves that guys like
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Trey Reynolds are get to lead this team in tackles
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: and push towards double-digit tackles pretty much every game. Now,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: your point is, I think, more well-made on the defensive
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: ends front, and I've been lamenting this really since week one.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: You still don't have a sack from your defensive ends.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Cash Dillon, Lance Holtzclaw, Ethan Day, Paul Fitzgerald, somebody's got
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: to get home. And I'm not just talking about sex
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: tackles for loss. All these things are massively important for
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: this team in run defense, but as a unit, this
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: group is doing a pretty good job. When you look
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: at what Utah has become and what Utah is against
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: the run in this conference, for those of you wondering
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Utah on the season is currently number two in the
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: big 12 conference in rush defense. They give up 2.86
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: yards per carry on the season. They've given up four
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: rushing touchdowns this year. Texas Tech has given up zero.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: BYU has given up three. Baylor and Utah have given
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: up four. Houston, who's the number one rush defense in
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: the conference right now, actually has the same... They surrender
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: the same average yards per carry that Utah does, but
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: they played one extra game, so their overall numbers are better.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: But Utah is.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: They're tied for first in the conference in run defense
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: right now. I don't think we're in a position as
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: a fan base or as observers of this team where
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: we should be complaining aggressively about this defensive line.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: It's not always....
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: Star low to LA wrecking and opposing offensive tackle or
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: an opposing center and opposing guard. And by the way,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: star was not like overly productive in tackles himself. He
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: was just recognized as a force on the inside because.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: That's exactly what he was. I will say this.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: As much as I'm crying about the defensive ends not
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: finishing on their pass rushes and not getting home and
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: creating sack numbers, a lot of those guys have been
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: pretty solid against the run. Go back and watch against
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Kansas and see what Ethan Day does when they're trying
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: to push him off the point of attack. Take a
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: look at what Cash Dillon does when he's pursuing from
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: the backside and how disciplined he stays to prevent cutbacks.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: I always appreciate the feedback in a text.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Michael says uh holds claw day fist trail the most
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: uninspiring list of dns i've heard at utah in my
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: life look they need numbers they need to get better
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: But I'm not going to act like these guys haven't
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: done anything. My guy Dave Hale did text in and says,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Gerke 100% had a hand in that nickname.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: Well deserved.
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: My guy Gerke.
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: I love how quick Dave was. I had to respond.
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: It's amazing.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: It's one of the greatest feelings of my life to
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: know that such an illustrious football mind like Dave Hale
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: is listening to my show on a regular basis.
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: We need to, we need to get them on as
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: a proper guest, not just as a guy who, who
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: called in, who's called in a couple of times or Texas.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: And we need, we need book him one of these times.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: We'll do that sometime, Dave.
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: I had to respond with just with a little Weber
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: state South quip too, because that's legendary.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: Yeah. what he said on his phone call a couple
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: of weeks ago.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: Spencer says, how do you feel about Utah matching up
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: against current playoff teams? I think Utah would need to
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: lean more on their unique offensive system, rather similar to
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: ASU using scatter boo in unique ways to keep close
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: with Texas. Seeing some top teams struggle makes me think
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: Utah isn't far away. Look, who are your top playoff
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: teams right now? Do I think Utah is going to beat.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: Georgia?
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: Do I think Utah is going to beat Texas, who
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: still is going to be a playoff team, by the way,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: even though they lost, do I think that Utah matches
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: up well against Ohio state right now?
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: First of all, I'm not watching those teams nearly as
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: closely as they am Utah.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: Second of all, there is a personnel disparity. We know
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: what that looks like. We have seen those matchups. That
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: is not something that you can just wave a magic
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: wand over and have it go away. Do I think
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: that this Utah football team is better than everyone they've faced?
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: Do I think they played their best football as of yet?
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: Absolutely not. Do I think that there's still a ton
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: of gas left in the tank? Is this Utah team
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: relying on miscues from another team? Are they relying on penalties?
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: Are they relying on like kind of unique scenarios, a
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: ball bouncing their way to get these wins?
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: No, they're not.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: And because of that, I see Utah football. I say,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: this is a really good team. Their ceiling is still undetermined.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: I told you three weeks before the season began, we're
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: probably going to be looking at Utah sitting at six
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: and Oh, a top 15 team in the country and
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: still shrug our shoulders and say, I don't really know
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: what this team is. That is exactly what's coming to
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: pass right now. Utah is going to go to Boulder,
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: Colorado this weekend. They're going to win by four touchdowns.
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: And we're still going to shrug our shoulders and say,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: I actually don't know how good this team is. The
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: only way that we find out is when Utah goes
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: up against the team, with similar talent, similar discipline, similar
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: coaching that happens, I think against Houston.
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: And that happens against BYU. That happens against Arizona. That
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: happens in a conference championship game. If you can get there,
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: everybody else season for sure. Everybody else has some of
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: these like glaring deficiencies. And if, if nothing else, we
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: should all be feeling some relief, some gratitude that the
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: glaring deficiencies we thought might be a problem for Utah,
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: the places we thought they might be at risk to
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: be underperformers, like an offensive line with a bunch of
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: new guys, they are the opposite of that.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: I mean, if.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: Anything else, we just have to sit back and say,
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: we still don't know, but we think. It's kind of like, James,
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: how long did you date your wife before you proposed?
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: Before I proposed, it was three months.
- 1:22:46Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: So in month number one, you were like, I think
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: I'm going to marry this girl, but I don't know yet. Yeah.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: And then in month number two, you were like, I
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: think I'm going to marry this girl, but I'm not
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: 100% sure yet. And in month number three, you're like, man,
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: I really think she might be the one, but I'm
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: not 100% sure yet, right? That's what this Utah scenario
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: is right now. Now, in most relationships, you get to
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: month one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: you're like, man, I really like this person. I really
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: like this girl. I think this might be something. And
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: you just wait and see.
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: You got no reason to dislike any of it. You
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: got no reason to say, no, this isn't going to work,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: but you're just like, man, wait and see, wait and see,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: wait and see. That's where we're at with Utah right now.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: This might be a team that you end up marrying.
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: It might also be a team that you want to
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: break up with in week eight. I don't think you're
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: gonna all signs pointing to, wow.
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: You know what?
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: Her family is really great. I really like her dad.
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: Her dad is awesome. That's Morgan Scali in this scenario.
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: All the ancillary stuff coming together.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Like, you know what?
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: I'm eliminating all the doubts, all the things that I
- 1:24:05Speaker 4: might go, you know what?
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: That's not a reason to marry. What I thought that
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: this girl was... was just like a super dependable, reliable,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: wonderful personality. Kind of like, okay, that's defensive football.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: And it's like, wow. But you know what?
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Turns out this girl is actually like a little sexier
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: than I thought. That's what this offense is. That's the
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: creativity on this offense.
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: And you realize she's pretty special to special teams.
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: You're like, holy cow. This there's some really interesting things here.
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: You know, else I really like, man, her brother's are awesome.
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: That's special teams, right?
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: That's your coordinator. That's a coordinator. Brother brother is a cowboy.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: It was just like an awesome dude. The other one
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: is kind of an evil genius. He's like cooking some
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: stuff up in his lab, but he's really like, I
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: see what you're doing, what we're doing here.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: This is cool.
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: So you're looking at this Utah football team and you're
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: just like, this might be the girl of my dreams maybe, but,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: but I still got to know because we haven't gone
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: on a trip together yet.
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: I haven't seen how she acts when.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: The waiter brings her the wrong meal or the steak
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: is not done the right way.
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: Is she going to be a real jerk about it?
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: There are still some things we need to learn about
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: this team, and one of the things we need to
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: learn about this team is do they still look like
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: that appealing dream gal when they're up against it? when
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: they're against the Houston, a BYU, when they, when it's like,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: do I still love, right? Do I still love this,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: this girl? Do I still want to marry this team?
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: When we go on vacation and we're at the pool
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: in Vegas and I'm seeing all these other really good
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: looking teams. Is she still standing out that way? Like
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: I thought she would, right? Every relationship, you've all been
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: through this. You're all laughing, I hope, because you're like, wait, yeah,
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: I had to go on a trip. We had to
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: go spend a holiday with one of our families to
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: see how that was going to go. You have to
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: do all those things in most cases before you're like,
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: all right, I'm jumping in.
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: I get it. We're in Utah.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: And some of you waited a week to get engaged.
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: And some of you waited three months to get engaged.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: And some of you waited two years to get it.
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't know if, I don't know if
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: my answer is going to line up with what you're
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: talking about, but.
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: Well, I'll be honest. If you had said like a year,
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: it would have made more sense for me, but we date.
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: So we, We were engaged for nine months, so we
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: were– or was it eight and a half?
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: So yeah, still a year.
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: So it was about– I was different from the predominant
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: culture in that regard with how long we were engaged for.
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: So did some of that after the engagement, yeah.
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: I'll say this too as we– before we go to
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: break here and start the Daily Dump. To the– other
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: points of that text, which was given how crazy Saturday
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: was and how the top teams, a lot of the
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: top teams got knocked off in upsets on Saturday. I
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: came out of Saturday, including Utah, by the way, and
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: Friday with what we saw from BYU going, I feel
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: like every team in college football might have some warts.
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: That's what I came out of with last week, including
- 1:27:26Speaker 4: the way that Utah led a team like Kansas hang
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: around for probably too long in a home game and
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: a game that we thought that they would dominate a
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: lot more. I'm like, yeah, there's no perfect team and
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: that's obvious, but there's, there's a little, there's some warts
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: here on just about everybody.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: I probably did some of this because I, I was
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: trying to, I was watching, I watched Kansas in their
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: previous power for games.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: And I was like, this team stinks, man. And you
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: know what?
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: They're, Their coaches are paid to their players are paid
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: to these guys. Like they're figuring some things out. Ike Marshall,
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: I underestimated. And you know why it looks the way
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: it did on Saturday night against Utah, because Utah said.
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: You shall not pass in the run game.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: Actually, that was more confusing than I wanted it to
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: be because you shall pass. You're going to have to pass.
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: And it turns out he's better at that, that we
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: gave him credit for. Then Utah gave him credit for that.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: Anyone gave him credit for like he, he rose to
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: the occasion and they still lost by 17 points. Utah
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: won and covered. I told you it was going to
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: be a three score game. I was thinking more like
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: 21 points. It was 17. That's technically three scores.
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: So it's a lot longer than it, that it seemed
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: like it going into the game. It would have needed
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: to get there though.
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: Like if you are, if this is where you're at
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: as a fan right now, understand you are speaking from
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: a very privileged vantage point.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: You are sitting back and you're.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: Saying my five and O team doesn't look as good
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: as I want them to.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: They look exactly how they should right now.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: New offensive coordinator, new defensive coordinator, new head coach, new
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: offensive line, new defensive line. And you're 5-0. You're a
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: top 11 team in the country. And you still have
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: the toughest part of your journey ahead of you. Just
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: like we anticipated to begin the season. Six games in.
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: You're still going to have questions seven games in. They're
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: going to start to get answered a little bit more
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: eight games in nine games in. We're going to be like, Oh, that's,
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: this is who they are. That BYU game is going
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: to be the thing that ultimately tells us who this
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: team is. And by the way, we learn a heck
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: of a lot more about what BYU is when they
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: take on Notre Dame, because while they have played Arizona
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: and they looked good against Arizona, they BYU showed some
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: deficiencies this last weekend against an Iowa state team that again,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: some bright spots, but not particularly fantastic. BYU's defense without
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: one of their best players showed up in a way
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: that I didn't think they were capable of.
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: You're learning. That's part of the process. Keep the text coming.
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: We'll get to some more of those here in a second.
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: Daily Dump is next.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on Utah's number one sports talk,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:30:36Speaker 7: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:30:39Speaker 7: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:30:41Speaker 7: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:30:45Speaker 7: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:30:49Speaker 10: Brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 1:30:52Speaker 8: Just look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: Valley plumbing, heating, cooling, excavation. They can handle it all
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: for you. Tell the truck with the duct at OC
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: sent you when you make your appointment at valley plumbing.com.
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: You don't even have to pick up the phone. Just
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: use the chat feature.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: All right. We got to be quick with the daily
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: dump here. Zach Moss is going to join us at
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: the top of our number three, the Utah football legend.
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: And currently he's on the radio broadcast as the sideline reporter.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: Marvin Harrison, Jr. A wicked memory for Utah fans from
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: a certain game at the end of a certain year
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: back in the day. And now a memory for Arizona
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: Cardinals fans after just kind of the biggest bust of
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: a start to his career that anyone could ever imagine.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: Marvin Harrison, Jr.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: It was reported last week that the Arizona Cardinals were
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: working on a trade. And he was going to be traded.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: There's a trade coming for Marvin Harrison Jr. Hey, all
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: the NFL insiders, it was weird reporting because these guys,
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: they get stuff before you could imagine them even having
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: access to it. And there was not enough detail. Hey,
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: Marvin Harrison Jr. is going to be traded. So we
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: knew that this divorce with Arizona was happening. We just
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: didn't know where he was going to end up. And
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: then how it got announced was one of the funniest
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: ways we've seen a trade get confirmed in the history
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: of the NFL. You guys want to know, huh?
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: Yes. All right.
- 1:32:31Speaker 8: We traded for Marvin Harrison.
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: See ya.
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: That's Houston, Texas head coach to be co Ryan's at
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: the end of his postgame press conference.
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: Just as an afterthought.
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: We traded for him by no follow-up question. A bike
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: drop walkout and Marvin Harrison jr.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: Will now walk.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: Be with the Houston Texans. There's a lot of things
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: you can read about how this trade came to pass.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: There's a lot of things you can read about how
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: the relationship with Marvin Harrison Jr.
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: And Arizona soured in the first place.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: There are plenty of people who have different feelings about
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: whether or not he's a serious NFL player. He's obviously
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: a talent. He's someone who's capable of being an elite
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: football player. There's some disagreement on whether or not he
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: has the desire to do so. And that's just the
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: way the cookie crumbles sometimes with these guys. He also,
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: you know, his dad's a hall of famer and he's
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: the namesake of that hall of famer, which means that
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: the expectations are always going to be a lot higher.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: His college career produced a ton of success, a ton
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: of statistical success, a ton of hype and a great
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: draft position. But at some point, like if you want
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: to be a great NFL player, you got to internalize that.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: You got to take it on yourself.
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: Apparently he asked the Arizona Cardinals to buy him like
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: a particular type of jugs machine, a seeker machine. And
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: they said no, because they cost like 50 grand and
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: they were like, rookie, you can't tell us what to do.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: And some people point to that being the reason why
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: the relationship started to go bad, which is crazy. Maybe
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: he'll be better in Houston. Maybe he'll be one of
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: these individuals that just ends up being a draft bust.
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 1:34:20Speaker 11: But.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: Houston Texans will now try to get the most out
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: of Marvin Harrison Jr., which reunites him with his former
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: college quarterback. So that could.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: Be a thing.
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: Yeah, could they both help each other come out of
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: some disappointing recent years is the question. You put two
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: disappointing top five draft picks together. Does that make two
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: guys who lived up to the hype?
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: He was the fourth overall pick, and the Houston Texans
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: reportedly sent multiple NFL draft picks to get him, which
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: is probably an overpay except their 2027 second-round pick and
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: a 2027 sixth-round pick, according to ESPN reporting.
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: Look, he was not working out. It was not going well.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: I think you probably could have got him for a
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: turkey sandwich, but that's what the Houston Texans sent to
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: Arizona to get Marvin Harrison Jr.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: You know I love a good memorabilia story.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: It's becoming prohibitively expensive to be a memorabilia collector.
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: Not that I ever really was one.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: Michael Jordan game-worn finals jersey sold for $ 14 million at auction.
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: Red road jersey he wore in game two of the
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: 1998 semifinals against the Utah Jazz. Bulls won that game
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: 93-88 before taking the series in six games. That was
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: the Bulls' final NBA championship as of today and his
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: final NBA championship.
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: His career.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: We don't have fond memories of that, but somebody did
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: and decided that they were willing to pay $ 14 million
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: for a Jersey that he wore in game two, not
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: even the ceiling game in game two of that series.
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: I look, as I have said with the card collecting
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: and the memorabilia stuff, and it's your money, do what
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: you want with it. $ 14 million for an old shirt
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: is insane.
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: If it were.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: The last bulls Jersey, Michael Jordan ever wore, maybe that
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: would make more sense to me. If it were the
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: first Michael board, Michael Jordan bulls Jersey ever his rookie year,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: maybe that would make more sense to me.
- 1:36:51Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: Yeah, this is game worn and it's from a finals game.
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: So it's great. Speaker 0 7, 05, 06, 07, 07, 08, 07, 08, 09, 010.
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: It's famous, not a famous finals game, but a very
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: famous Michael Jordan finals series. And it's the road Jersey,
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: same one that he wore in game six, but it's
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: not the final one. Like you said, it's the one
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: he wore Four games before.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: Good for you.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Like, I mean, now it's a conversation piece.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: And by the way, when you hang this in your office,
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: you could say that's Michael Jordan's final game jersey.
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: No one's actually going to check. So maybe that's your plan.
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: $ 14 million is bananas. You better have bleep you money
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: if you're spending $ 14 million on a.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: Piece of wall art.
- 1:37:29Speaker 4: And maybe you'd technically be right about this is his
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: final jersey because I imagine they wear, I don't know
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: how many copies you have of the same jersey home
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: or away Jersey back then, especially, I don't know. So
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: maybe it was, it's just, he washed it between the
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: last time he wore it.
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: There's gotta be another one. Otherwise they wouldn't have made
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: the distinction that this was good point. That's the game
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: to you.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Good point.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: Good context clues by you at that point in his career. Right?
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: I bet Michael Jordan, they knew like he was already
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: the goat at that point.
- 1:38:01Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: So people were just like, Michael, you get a new
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: Jersey every game. We're going to like, we're going to
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: give this to somebody. This is going to be a gift.
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: This is going to be an autograph. Hang it up
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: in our hall of fame. We're going to hang it
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: up to the basketball hall of fame.
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38:13Speaker 8: I bet.
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: I bet Michael Jordan during his final season with the bulls.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: I bet he wore 82 different jerseys. He probably did
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: where they were just like, yeah, we got you a
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: new one again for today.
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: And maybe, maybe he didn't even know because they just
- 1:38:28Speaker 4: lay out the jury. He doesn't put doesn't know it's.
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: A different one. I did eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: zero 700.
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: If you're like a jazz equipment room person, how many
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: jerseys are there for Lowry market in a season? Is
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: he wearing the same home Jersey? Is he wearing the
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: same away Jersey on Saturday? Each road trip. But then
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: the next road trip, he's got a different one because
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: the proliferation of memorabilia and game worn stuff has become
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: like really insane and impossible to verify and track, but go,
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: go to a major league baseball game. Now at the
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: team store, the main team store at every one of those,
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: they have game used stuff. There's a hundred bats and
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: 300 balls. That's in every stadium now. So I guess
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: you're doing this with jerseys as well.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: James and I spent an obnoxious amount of time talking
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: about this before the show started.
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: It's a wild story.
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: The Atlanta dream are in the WNBA finals.
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: First time ever for them.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: They take on the, the Valkyries of the golden of
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: golden state who play in Valhalla.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: New and expansion franchise in the WNBA. That has been
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: a major, major hit in the San Francisco Bay area.
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: And in the finals, right?
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: This is it.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: The WNBA has had this moment. Now that's not to
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: be called a moment anymore. It's a trend. They're, they're
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: pushing forward. They've got, you know, they're talked about league
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: is covered better.
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: The ratings are better. The revenue is better.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: The pay scale is better. They, quintupled their minimum pay
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: scale for all of the, the women in the league. Really,
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: really interesting stuff going on in the WNBA. This is
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: not in accordance with that trend. The Atlanta dream are
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: in the WNBA finals and they do not have a
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: venue for the home games. They are set to play
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: in the WNBA finals. You heard that right in the finals.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: This is a championship contending team. This is one of
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: the two teams left in, vying for it all in
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: the WNBA, and they played all their home playoff games
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: so far at State Farm Arena where the Hawks play,
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: but they are supposed to host game three. There's a
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: concert the same night. That's their first finals home game.
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: Then there's Hawks games, and this is the home of
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: the Hawks, on the same days as games four and
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: game six of the WNBA.
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: Finals, which means.
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: that they have to play at their regular home arena,
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: which is called the gateway center arena. And that's like 3,500 people.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: That would be the smallest venue in WNBA history, a
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: WNB finals history.
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: Excuse me.
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: They're exploring other options. There's like Georgia Southern has an arena.
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: That's about 8,000 fans.
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: Georgia tech's got an arena. That's about 8,000 fans.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: There's one that's half an hour away that's like 12,000 fans.
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: And I know that all of you are not WNBA
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: Finals fans or WNBA fans in general.
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: But the playoffs, the tickets are selling.
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: Yeah, they're sold out all their home games in the
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: playoffs so far, and they played six regular season games
- 1:42:01Speaker 4: at State Farm Arena where the Hawks play. That is,
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: by the way, where they're moving full-time next season. So
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: that's why they played a handful in the regular season
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: and decided to play.
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: In the playoffs.
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: I gotta think that ownership was like, we're not making
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: the finals, so we're not gonna have to worry about this.
- 1:42:21Speaker 4: And then it happens! You made the point before the show, OC.
- 1:42:27Speaker 4: This is another example of why it's good that the
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: WNBA is changing commissioners here, because this is another area
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: where it's like, come on, better leadership would have figured
- 1:42:38Speaker 4: out something just in case every team plays in the
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: finals that, you know, the dates pretty far off ahead,
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: especially if you're the commissioner, you gotta have, you gotta
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: have a viable plan.
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: Attention to detail in these scenarios is so critically important.
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: And I don't even, it doesn't even have to be
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: the commissioner that knows these things, right? The ownership, whoever, yeah.
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: But when it is something, everything rolls uphill, right? When
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: the commissioner is already thought of as kind of, and
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: they're getting a new one, they're searching for one right now.
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: When these details mean that you're going to watch at
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: least two of the WNBA finals games. And it's going
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: to look and feel small in a league that has
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: continued to grow and to look and feel bigger and
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: bigger and bigger. The disparity is going to be so
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: insanely noticeable. Because ball holla is loud.
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: It's crazy. Chase center where the Warriors play.
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: It's where the Warriors play. And it's got its own look,
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: of course, for the Valkyries. And the fan base does
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: things totally different for the Valkyries and the music and
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: the light show and the fireworks and the in like
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: everything is different. It's all different. And it's big. It
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: looks like a premier product. And then a WNBA finals
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: team is going to go and they're going to.
- 1:44:04Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: We split it in the Bay area. It's one a
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: piece going back home to our, our arena. That is
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: smaller than a Texas high school gym. This is, this
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: is like for Arizona coyotes fans. They played their.
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: Last games at arena at similar capacity. If I'm not mistaken,
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: maybe a few more give or take a few a
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: hundred or thousand here, but this would be like if
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: the coyotes pre Utah mammoth got to, got to the
- 1:44:31Speaker 4: Stanley cup final and they're playing in Mollet arena. This
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: is like, it would have felt very small time and
- 1:44:38Speaker 4: it would have been frankly, probably embarrassing for the NHL.
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: Speaker 3 and you know what the NHL probably would
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: have done something different. They probably would have been like, look,
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: You're going to play where this you're going to play
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: at the sun's arena for this. I know they're not
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: equipped for hockey, but we're doing some ice down or
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: we're going to play in Anaheim and all the season
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: ticket holders from Arizona. We're going to cover your, your
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: costs to like attend these games. You have to do
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: something to, and again, growing pains of a league that
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: is growing rapidly right now. But what a weird scenario
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: where a WNBA finals team does not have an arena
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: to play in that suits the occasion.
- 1:45:16Speaker 4: And the games, by the way, not the Hawks, or
- 1:45:19Speaker 4: not the Dreams home games, but game one in San
- 1:45:22Speaker 4: Francisco is Saturday.
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: Like, this is coming up.
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: One thing that I would think might be viable, but
- 1:45:31Speaker 4: who knows, is move the start date of the series
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: back one day or up one day, and then at
- 1:45:38Speaker 4: the Atlanta games, you would avoid these conflicts with the Hawks.
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: And it's a somber concert, by the way. Did you
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: look at the Chase Center's dates, though?
- 1:45:47Speaker 4: I did not, actually. That's a good point. I'm just
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: assuming it's always going to be fine because there's no
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: story about it.
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: Because on the other end, if you move it up,
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: maybe it doesn't work in the Bay Area. Yeah, you're
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: probably conflicting with Warriors games. So, sorry, Atlanta Dream, that
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: you did everything you were supposed to do and made
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: it all the way to the WNBA Finals and you
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: still have to play it in a political arena. Nightmare
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: for the Dream?
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: I see what you did there. It is October.
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: It's time to take in one of Utah's most iconic

- 1:47:37Speaker 5: Doing good, doing good. How are you guys?
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: Doing all right.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: Utah sitting at 5-0, number 11 ranked team in the country.
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: An impressive performance the other night up there in a
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: whiteout game.
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: Let's start with that.
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: I didn't know I was going to feel about a
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: whiteout at night at Rice Echo Stadium. It's never been
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: done before. The fans showed out. The uniforms look great.
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: What did you think of the whiteout?
- 1:48:02Speaker 5: I thought it was really cool.
- 1:48:03Speaker 8: I love the.
- 1:48:05Speaker 5: the change up to the night games. You know, obviously
- 1:48:09Speaker 5: I thought it was going to be pretty bad weather.
- 1:48:12Speaker 5: I didn't think it would be as awesome of a,
- 1:48:15Speaker 5: you know, night out for everybody in the stadium. But,
- 1:48:19Speaker 5: you know, I'm the weather held off. MG was absolutely
- 1:48:24Speaker 5: just perfect. You know, I love to see them do
- 1:48:28Speaker 5: different things like that. So I thought it was really good.
- 1:48:30Speaker 5: It was really fun.
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: It was fun.
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: And obviously it's always a lot more fun when a
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: team wins a 17 point victory ultimately for the university
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: of Utah football team.
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: But, but we saw Kansas make a couple of pushes.
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: Their quarterback proved to be very elusive in the pocket,
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: was able to get some big chunk plays, snag some momentum.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: And Morgan Scali in particular talked about, you know, at halftime,
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: he had to go in and challenge his guys to
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: get that momentum back. And, Zach, you've been part of
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: every imaginable scenario on a football field, having the momentum,
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: losing the momentum, getting it back. When they went into
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: halftime and you knew that everything was kind of trending
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: in Kansas' direction, what were your thoughts on how Utah
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: was going to come out the second half, particularly with
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: how they played in third quarters, to get things going
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: again in the second half?
- 1:49:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought, you know, momentum shifts are just absolutely huge.
- 1:49:28Speaker 5: You know, that was my question to Coach Scali. I
- 1:49:31Speaker 5: have time, you know, not have time in the postgame,
- 1:49:35Speaker 5: you know, just understanding how much momentum shifts can affect
- 1:49:39Speaker 5: the team. And, you know, obviously we had so much
- 1:49:42Speaker 5: momentum in the first half and the way they closed out.
- 1:49:45Speaker 5: The first half was just absolutely not ideal. You can
- 1:49:48Speaker 5: lose the fans. When you give a team like Kansas,
- 1:49:52Speaker 5: you already knew they were a weird team from the
- 1:49:57Speaker 5: standpoint of you really couldn't tell exactly how good they
- 1:50:02Speaker 5: were overall. Obviously, the quarterback, only so many games under
- 1:50:06Speaker 5: his belt, but very dynamic. He had a streaky arm,
- 1:50:11Speaker 5: but he looked really good against us. You know, the
- 1:50:14Speaker 5: running back Edwards could do some things as well. They
- 1:50:17Speaker 5: had a pretty good upfront on both sides of that
- 1:50:20Speaker 5: ball as well. So, you know, it was weird. It
- 1:50:25Speaker 5: was scary because they got the lead down so fast.
- 1:50:29Speaker 5: and they kept getting chunk plays, and they kept getting
- 1:50:31Speaker 5: chunk plays. I like that these guys can score with
- 1:50:37Speaker 5: the best of them. We do it totally different. We
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: do it totally different. A lot of our star stuff
- 1:50:42Speaker 5: is on the ground, and some misdirection things that some
- 1:50:47Speaker 5: agree there. But I love that they start off fast.
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: This team really does start fast. When some of these
- 1:50:56Speaker 5: things do happen, You know, they got some breathing room, right? Obviously,
- 1:51:02Speaker 5: competition kind of sticks up in the next few weeks
- 1:51:05Speaker 5: here after the Colorado game with Houston and BYU. You
- 1:51:11Speaker 5: kind of want to see this team just play a
- 1:51:15Speaker 5: full four quarters. like literally just start the finish versus
- 1:51:20Speaker 5: some of the inferior teams that they got a chance
- 1:51:25Speaker 5: to play. And, you know, they got another one coming
- 1:51:27Speaker 5: up this week with so many different things going on
- 1:51:30Speaker 5: with the Colorado.
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: Utah right now is five for five in scoring on
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: their opening possession. And setting that tone and establishing a
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: successful offensive drive early We've seen it happen in several
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: different scenarios, right? This last weekend, it was like a
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: seven-minute drive. We've seen them score quickly. We've seen them
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: build nice, long drives. But just that tone-setting thing where
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: it's our first offensive possession, we're going to take it down,
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: we're going to get on the board, and we're going
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: to get on the board with seven points. How much
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: does that matter in these games? Given your competition, you're
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: probably going to win these games anyway, but starting off
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: as hot as they have started... and scoring on all
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: five opening drives. What does that mean for this team?
- 1:52:20Speaker 5: That means that this offensive team is legit. You know,
- 1:52:24Speaker 5: I think that's the main thing. I've played in a
- 1:52:27Speaker 5: lot of really good offenses going all the way back
- 1:52:29Speaker 5: to little league football, little league. And the one thing
- 1:52:34Speaker 5: that good offenses have, all they have in common is
- 1:52:38Speaker 5: they start fast. They don't have to, you know, I
- 1:52:42Speaker 5: gave a comparison the other day to the new Orleans saints, right.
- 1:52:48Speaker 5: They can score points, right. But they always started every
- 1:52:51Speaker 5: single game late, but it's like to get off the
- 1:52:53Speaker 5: bus and they don't know the game started the third quarter,
- 1:52:57Speaker 5: you know, and that has to do with a lot
- 1:52:59Speaker 5: of different things. So the fact that this offense, we
- 1:53:03Speaker 5: got the, we got the week, you know, it's 10
- 1:53:06Speaker 5: plus games are sworn 30 plus points. None of that
- 1:53:10Speaker 5: stuff is a fluke. It's not by chance. These guys
- 1:53:13Speaker 5: are very intentional. The coaches are very intentional on how
- 1:53:15Speaker 5: they want to go out and script the plays. You
- 1:53:20Speaker 5: don't go out and start 5-5 on your first drive
- 1:53:24Speaker 5: each and every game and get points out of them
- 1:53:26Speaker 5: if you're not doing the things you need to be doing.
- 1:53:29Speaker 5: These guys are mentally locked in. I always say you've
- 1:53:32Speaker 5: got to give 90% of the credit to the players
- 1:53:36Speaker 5: because the coaches can have a great game plan and
- 1:53:40Speaker 5: the players can mess up something. Kennedy can hold us back,
- 1:53:44Speaker 5: but we've played really flawless football so far. Some nitpick
- 1:53:48Speaker 5: things that we could look at, but this is the
- 1:53:52Speaker 5: time where really good teams start to separate themselves and
- 1:53:57Speaker 5: that week sits him down. Now it's time to truly
- 1:54:01Speaker 5: be who we are and dominate being who we are
- 1:54:05Speaker 5: no matter who the opponent is.
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: Zach Moss is our guest here talking a little Utah
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: football on the Sean O'Connell show. Offensive line is something
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: we've talked about every single week and they got conference
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: recognition this week. They're the offensive line of the week
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: in the big 12 conference after helping, you know, generate
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: 500 yards of offense against the Kansas team that had
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: been pretty solid defensively before that. And, you know, it's
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: the same thing that we've, it's a continuation of the
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: same conversation we've already had where, This team started five
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: new guys, and you got a true freshman starting at
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: left tackle, and Zeroweth Williams was a career backup who's
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: now putting himself into draft conversations. It was one of
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: the biggest question marks, and now I think it's as
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: reliable as anyone else, any other position group on this team,
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: and it's leading to great success for Devin Dampier, for
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: Way Sean Parker, for Bird Ficklin. As a guy whose
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: success in his career was so closely tied to what
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: an offensive line could or could not do, What do
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: you think of when you see this group, especially given
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: that they're all brand new?
- 1:55:10Speaker 5: Yeah, the fact that they're all brand new and they're
- 1:55:12Speaker 5: going out there and having success. You know, the Kansas
- 1:55:17Speaker 5: game on Saturday wasn't the cleanest. It had some pressure.
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: Had some times where he just didn't feel super comfortable
- 1:55:25Speaker 5: in the pocket. Kind of moved a lot. You know,
- 1:55:27Speaker 5: we had some PSLs and things of that nature. But
- 1:55:30Speaker 5: I know things happen throughout a game regardless. Like I said,
- 1:55:33Speaker 5: you know, Kansas up front. was pretty decent, you know,
- 1:55:37Speaker 5: coming into that game as a new, but, you know,
- 1:55:40Speaker 5: these guys deserve all the credit in the world. We
- 1:55:41Speaker 5: talk about, you know, five weeks, like so much noise
- 1:55:46Speaker 5: on the offensive line being five brand new guys all
- 1:55:49Speaker 5: playing with each other because, you know, offensive line, they
- 1:55:53Speaker 5: all have to play as one guy almost. It's like
- 1:55:57Speaker 5: one big muscle up there. If somebody isn't firing, your
- 1:56:01Speaker 5: body isn't as strong as it needs to be. The
- 1:56:04Speaker 5: fact that all these guys are communicating at a high level,
- 1:56:06Speaker 5: they're playing with just great understanding of who they're up
- 1:56:12Speaker 5: there with. Weishan is is so happy to have these guys, right?
- 1:56:16Speaker 5: You talk about these guys, you know, obviously even the
- 1:56:19Speaker 5: Big 12 media, I believe, and, you know, kind of
- 1:56:22Speaker 5: everybody was kind of taking it back a little bit
- 1:56:24Speaker 5: just because of, you know, obviously the line that we
- 1:56:26Speaker 5: had last year. You talk about two first-round picks up there. But,
- 1:56:30Speaker 5: you know, he believed these guys. These guys are now
- 1:56:34Speaker 5: starting to find their groove as well, right? And that
- 1:56:36Speaker 5: goes back to my point. This is where, you know,
- 1:56:39Speaker 5: really good teams start to realize who they are. And
- 1:56:42Speaker 5: these guys now know they can play. at this level of,
- 1:56:47Speaker 5: you know, domination to some degree, right? And on a
- 1:56:50Speaker 5: consistent level, right? You can't put up 500-plus offensive yards.
- 1:56:54Speaker 5: I think they've done it twice now, at least twice.
- 1:56:57Speaker 5: You can't do that without the big guys up front,
- 1:56:59Speaker 5: you know, doing their job at a high level. You know,
- 1:57:02Speaker 5: I love that the penalties have been low. Like, that
- 1:57:05Speaker 5: was something I was worried about when we talked about
- 1:57:07Speaker 5: finding the guys. But the penalties have been low. They're
- 1:57:10Speaker 5: just playing really good football. right now, and it just
- 1:57:13Speaker 5: has to continue to happen.
- 1:57:19Speaker 2: You are able to answer this question.
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: Most people, even people who played football in college, are not,
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: because sometimes you just need a big playmaker to make
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: a big play, and the defense did their job. They
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: stopped Kansas on the one-yard line, backed up against the
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: end zone. You get a couple of plays. Braden Pagan
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: gets a reception to get you out to what, like
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: the the 10 effectively, but it still felt like, man,
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: Utah needs to get out of the shadow of their
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: own end zone. They need to get a big play here.
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: And Mac G calls the right play way. Sean Parker,
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: direct snap in the wildcat formation. I got another question
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: about that here, but what is it, Zach? How is
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: it when you're already a really good player, you can
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: then kick into another gear. You can go out and
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: you can deliver when your team needs that play. You
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: did it plenty of times way. Sean, I this season
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: has done it a couple of times where it's like,
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: he knows the team knows the fans know offensive coordinator
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: knows now is when we need to get way Sean
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: the ball and he will be the one to make
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: that play.
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: How do you find that next gear in those big moments?
- 1:58:26Speaker 5: You know, I, I, it's been so much fun. First
- 1:58:29Speaker 5: of all, just to watch him, uh, up close and
- 1:58:33Speaker 5: personal week after week. Um, and you know, just seeing
- 1:58:37Speaker 5: the way he carries himself, right. It's, it's, it's almost,
- 1:58:41Speaker 5: you know, makes you miss playing football sometimes, honestly, just,
- 1:58:45Speaker 5: you know, a guy like that, who seems like he's
- 1:58:49Speaker 5: just always locked in and always wants to be at
- 1:58:54Speaker 5: his exact best. Um, And getting the chance to talk
- 1:58:59Speaker 5: to him over and over, you know, his personality is
- 1:59:02Speaker 5: he wants to be and he believes he is the
- 1:59:05Speaker 5: best player on the field every single time, right? He
- 1:59:09Speaker 5: wants the ball in his hands, right? It's like, you know,
- 1:59:13Speaker 5: if you love basketball, right, like I do, you know,
- 1:59:17Speaker 5: even if you're playing pick-up ball, the competitor in you
- 1:59:20Speaker 5: wants to take the last shot, right? I'd rather lose
- 1:59:24Speaker 5: knowing that, you know, I lost on... the team lost
- 1:59:27Speaker 5: because of me versus somebody else's hand. And he seems to,
- 1:59:31Speaker 5: you know, operate like that week in and week out.
- 1:59:34Speaker 5: And he even told Coach McGivins, you know, per his
- 1:59:38Speaker 5: own words, that, you know, when things get tight, man, like,
- 1:59:42Speaker 5: look to me, right? Look to me. And, you know,
- 1:59:46Speaker 5: they're so lucky to have a guy like that in
- 1:59:48Speaker 5: that room because that makes everybody's job so much easier. Obviously,
- 1:59:52Speaker 5: we have some guys like him. step up to some
- 1:59:55Speaker 5: moments for sure. Like we've seen him do it different
- 1:59:58Speaker 5: places and things of that nature as well. But, you know,
- 2:00:01Speaker 5: he right now is becoming the one constant on the
- 2:00:04Speaker 5: offense where it doesn't matter what you do, right? Where
- 2:00:08Speaker 5: you're at, what quarter you may be in, like you
- 2:00:11Speaker 5: feel the difference of when he has the ball in
- 2:00:13Speaker 5: his hand, right? And when he doesn't have the ball
- 2:00:15Speaker 5: in his hand, right? And, you know, I'm always on
- 2:00:18Speaker 5: the sideline thinking, man, when we keep just giving him
- 2:00:21Speaker 5: the ball, right? Like he only has 15 carries or
- 2:00:23Speaker 5: something like that. just at Kansas, right? And I'm just like, man,
- 2:00:30Speaker 5: how is this guy not touching the ball, right? And
- 2:00:33Speaker 5: moving to a different way, at least 20 and 25 times. But,
- 2:00:37Speaker 5: you know, he's earned that, right? He's worked his tail
- 2:00:39Speaker 5: off throughout the offseason and all that type of stuff
- 2:00:41Speaker 5: as well. So, you know, now when those big games arrive,
- 2:00:46Speaker 5: like that's where, you know, guys that, you know, who...
- 2:00:51Speaker 5: really want to be in that moment, which I'm sure
- 2:00:54Speaker 5: he does, right? But, you know, games, right? Houston and
- 2:01:00Speaker 5: BYU back-to-back weeks at home on your home field and,
- 2:01:04Speaker 5: you know, the defensive coordinator is game planning for you, right?
- 2:01:11Speaker 5: That's where, you know, the really, really, really special guys
- 2:01:14Speaker 5: show up. And he's turning that way. So, you know,
- 2:01:17Speaker 5: I'm just happy that we have a guy in that room, right,
- 2:01:21Speaker 5: on the offensive side and keeping the running back thing
- 2:01:24Speaker 5: kind of going.
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: So that play, that 90-yard touchdown run, he took the
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: direct snap.
- 2:01:33Speaker 2: And I've never done this before.
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: How much as a running back does it change your vision,
- 2:01:39Speaker 1: your your execution of a play when you're not taking
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: a handoff, when you are receiving the direct snap, uh,
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: it's not the primary method by which running backs get
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: the ball, but it's obviously part of what they can do.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: And he turned that one into a touchdown in a
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: very crucial time, long one for the Utes. How much
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: does direct snap possession change what a running back does
- 2:02:02Speaker 1: versus getting a pitcher a handoff?
- 2:02:05Speaker 5: Oh, it changes the picture. Um, big time. Um, first
- 2:02:11Speaker 5: of all you know just from the analytics part of
- 2:02:13Speaker 5: the football game why we talk about numbers right um
- 2:02:18Speaker 5: it's a 10 on 10 now right you got the
- 2:02:20Speaker 5: quarterback out of the way uh and you know somebody's
- 2:02:26Speaker 5: covering accounting for that quarterback you got the quarterback in
- 2:02:29Speaker 5: the backfield now dan period is a very obviously very
- 2:02:33Speaker 5: uh good run and that's well known but you know
- 2:02:37Speaker 5: When he's out of the backfield and you put him
- 2:02:40Speaker 5: out wide, you put him out wide, it's a 10-on-10.
- 2:02:42Speaker 5: So now a running back knows, I just have to
- 2:02:45Speaker 5: beat one guy. Just got to beat one guy. I
- 2:02:50Speaker 5: believe all my other guys are going to do their job,
- 2:02:53Speaker 5: and now it's on me to just do my job
- 2:02:58Speaker 5: and beat that one guy. And you can't beat one
- 2:03:00Speaker 5: guy as a person with the ball in your hands,
- 2:03:03Speaker 5: no matter what position you're at. You can't beat a
- 2:03:05Speaker 5: guy with the ball in your hands. you know, that's
- 2:03:07Speaker 5: going to be pretty tough. And you probably might need
- 2:03:10Speaker 5: a lot of opportunities. And, you know, it reminds me of,
- 2:03:14Speaker 5: I want to say it was maybe the old eight dolphins, maybe.
- 2:03:19Speaker 5: Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown, and they just ran the
- 2:03:22Speaker 5: Wildcat to sleep, right? It was always just big play
- 2:03:26Speaker 5: after big play after big play. You know, and I
- 2:03:30Speaker 5: love the way Sean makes these plays on these Wildcats
- 2:03:33Speaker 5: all the time. It's not like it's, you know, sporadic
- 2:03:36Speaker 5: play that's come out of nowhere. He's doing that when
- 2:03:39Speaker 5: he gets the ball in his hand in the Wildcat
- 2:03:42Speaker 5: a lot, no matter if it's an open field, backup
- 2:03:44Speaker 5: situation going to the red zone. But, yeah, it was really,
- 2:03:47Speaker 5: you know, just really cool. Bill Riley actually called that
- 2:03:51Speaker 5: it would be a really cool time for Wayshawn to
- 2:03:53Speaker 5: get that big 90-yard run back that he got called
- 2:03:56Speaker 5: back a couple weeks ago. And literally the next play
- 2:03:59Speaker 5: he hits this big run and, you know, that's what
- 2:04:02Speaker 5: closers do.
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: Semi Talonga also got his first touchdown and he's become
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: a fan favorite. He's very popular in the locker room.
- 2:04:12Speaker 1: Explain for the people who don't know what it means
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: to a team when a guy who quote unquote deserves
- 2:04:18Speaker 1: that tutty finally gets one.
- 2:04:21Speaker 5: Oh, that was, that was so fun. I'm leaving on
- 2:04:24Speaker 5: the team, but I know just like, you know, when
- 2:04:27Speaker 5: those big guys who, you know, sacrifice so much right
- 2:04:32Speaker 5: and i got to talk to him as well on
- 2:04:35Speaker 5: saturday night and you know you could just tell it
- 2:04:38Speaker 5: was something that he'll never forget right and that's so
- 2:04:42Speaker 5: great to see that one um you know the coaches
- 2:04:45Speaker 5: trust them because that was a big play i wasn't
- 2:04:49Speaker 5: you know we're up already and we're just going to
- 2:04:51Speaker 5: call the play and let's get out one of our
- 2:04:52Speaker 5: big guys touchdown You know, this was a key pivotal
- 2:04:55Speaker 5: play in the game on a fourth down in the
- 2:04:57Speaker 5: red zone where that's a guy to have a moment. And,
- 2:05:00Speaker 5: you know, he's running the play so much in practice
- 2:05:04Speaker 5: and the coaches trust in him. And that's a memory
- 2:05:07Speaker 5: that he'll never forget. And, you know, to see the
- 2:05:10Speaker 5: sideline reaction to him getting that and, you know, the
- 2:05:13Speaker 5: much chanting his name and all the work and things
- 2:05:16Speaker 5: that he does when it comes about. Things that you
- 2:05:18Speaker 5: don't see in the newspaper. Things you don't see online, right?
- 2:05:21Speaker 5: Things that we're not going to talk about week in
- 2:05:23Speaker 5: and week out, right? Oh, how great of a block
- 2:05:26Speaker 5: did he have this week and how bad was the blocking, right?
- 2:05:29Speaker 5: Things of that nature we don't talk about. But those
- 2:05:31Speaker 5: guys inside the building understand how important he is to
- 2:05:36Speaker 5: the team and all the things that he's able to
- 2:05:37Speaker 5: do for them. seeing him be rewarded in that way
- 2:05:41Speaker 5: is always really, really fun. Um, and you know, a
- 2:05:44Speaker 5: big guy like himself or all of his alignment catches
- 2:05:47Speaker 5: a touchdown. I like my guy that dropped the touchdown, uh,
- 2:05:50Speaker 5: last night for Atlanta.
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: I believe the, I was standing on down on the
- 2:05:55Speaker 1: sideline when the, the broadcast, the TV broadcast, uh, sideline
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: reporter came over and asked somebody like, Hey, does he,
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: does he really weigh 320 pounds?
- 2:06:07Speaker 2: Started laughing.
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: It's like, I think he probably weighs a little more
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: than 320 pounds. He's listed at 320 pounds, but three
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: 20 might be shy of what he's actually pushing right now.
- 2:06:18Speaker 5: Oh, nah, he's a big boy now. But, you know,
- 2:06:21Speaker 5: they call him, they got a little nickname for him,
- 2:06:24Speaker 5: Dancing Bear or something like that. That's one of his names.
- 2:06:27Speaker 5: And Semi-Truck, like all these different things. But he moves
- 2:06:32Speaker 5: very well.
- 2:06:33Speaker 8: Moves very well.
- 2:06:35Speaker 5: He bends, you know, and that's why he's here, man.
- 2:06:39Speaker 5: You get a big guy like that, that can do
- 2:06:40Speaker 5: a lot of different things. You know, it definitely won't
- 2:06:45Speaker 5: be the last time that he does some special stuff
- 2:06:48Speaker 5: like that in a big cultural moment of the game.
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: All right, last thing before I let you go, now
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: it's a road trip to Boulder, Colorado, and a Colorado
- 2:06:56Speaker 1: team that has some issues right now. They are down
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: to a backup quarterback who we know very well in
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: Isaac Wilson. They've dismissed some guys from the team in
- 2:07:06Speaker 1: recent weeks. They've had just a really hard time getting
- 2:07:10Speaker 1: things going. They've had crucial injuries, not only to the
- 2:07:12Speaker 1: quarterback position, but Team chemistry appears to be a problem.
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: This is a game where Utah 15 and a half
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: points favorites right now, which is the same as last week.
- 2:07:22Speaker 1: But I think Colorado is in a bad way. How
- 2:07:26Speaker 1: do you make sure you don't look ahead to Houston?
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: You don't overlook this Colorado team, despite all their problems.
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: And you go out there and you execute and you
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: get the win that Utah should be able to get
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: pretty handily in Boulder.
- 2:07:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:07:41Speaker 5: You know, that's, We call those trap games, right? Call
- 2:07:45Speaker 5: those trap games where, you know, yeah, team's struggling, but
- 2:07:49Speaker 5: we know we can go out there and beat them. We,
- 2:07:51Speaker 5: you know, probably don't even have to have the greatest
- 2:07:54Speaker 5: week of practice, right? To go ahead and beat a
- 2:07:58Speaker 5: team like Colorado, who struggling um but you never want
- 2:08:02Speaker 5: to underestimate your opponent that's that's always number one like
- 2:08:05Speaker 5: you never ever ever want to underestimate who you're playing
- 2:08:09Speaker 5: no matter what the record says no matter who the
- 2:08:12Speaker 5: head coach is no matter um you know Anything. Never,
- 2:08:17Speaker 5: never want to do it. So, you know, like I
- 2:08:19Speaker 5: said before, this team is, the reason I don't worry
- 2:08:23Speaker 5: about this team week in and week out is something
- 2:08:27Speaker 5: that occurred last year when just watching, you know, the
- 2:08:31Speaker 5: leaders of the team on the council and stuff like
- 2:08:33Speaker 5: that in their press game conferences, right? Because Obviously, we're
- 2:08:39Speaker 5: not in the locker room. We don't get a chance
- 2:08:41Speaker 5: to see you guys on a day-to-day work and things
- 2:08:44Speaker 5: of that nature. But just the press conference, I could
- 2:08:48Speaker 5: tell last year that this team truly believes in each
- 2:08:54Speaker 5: and every guy. And you guys really do play for
- 2:08:57Speaker 5: each other. And You know, when you're able to see
- 2:09:00Speaker 5: that just on a press conference, that tells me a lot.
- 2:09:04Speaker 5: And obviously, you can't block these guys over the next season.
- 2:09:07Speaker 5: And it starts with Dan Pierce, right? I think he
- 2:09:10Speaker 5: is one of the best leaders in the country. And
- 2:09:13Speaker 5: the way he's able to galvanize these guys is absolutely
- 2:09:18Speaker 5: just remarkable to see. It's infectious. how much fun these
- 2:09:22Speaker 5: guys have playing with each other, for each other. And,
- 2:09:25Speaker 5: you know, they don't care, right? Even the DBs, I
- 2:09:29Speaker 5: got a chance to and they don't care who's making
- 2:09:33Speaker 5: the play, right? Like they just pushing each other to
- 2:09:35Speaker 5: be the absolute best they can be. And that's why
- 2:09:38Speaker 5: they're sitting there where they're sitting at. So when you
- 2:09:40Speaker 5: got a game like this coming up in the track game,
- 2:09:42Speaker 5: quote unquote, you know, the leadership steps in, right? Guys
- 2:09:47Speaker 5: don't lose focus, right? Guys aren't going to start skipping
- 2:09:50Speaker 5: reps or, you know, not finishing, you know, in the
- 2:09:53Speaker 5: end zone, things they've definitely been doing weeks before, feeling
- 2:09:57Speaker 5: like they had a better opponent in front of them, right?
- 2:09:59Speaker 5: Because they understand that the process of what they're doing
- 2:10:03Speaker 5: isn't about the opponent that they're playing, right? The process is,
- 2:10:07Speaker 5: you know, what am I doing when I'm off this field?
- 2:10:09Speaker 5: What am I doing when I'm on this practice field?
- 2:10:11Speaker 5: What am I doing when I'm in this meeting room, right?
- 2:10:14Speaker 5: All these different things. So I think these guys have
- 2:10:16Speaker 5: a great leadership on this team, and they are in
- 2:10:20Speaker 5: the process. So, you know, a game like this, they
- 2:10:24Speaker 5: just get another chance to show exactly who they are.
- 2:10:29Speaker 2: Zach, enjoy the trip to Boulder. We'll see you again,
- 2:10:32Speaker 2: I guess, next week, and we'll have you on next Monday.
- 2:10:35Speaker 2: Thank you, sir.
- 2:10:37Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 2:10:38Speaker 5: Appreciate you guys. Take care.
- 2:10:40Speaker 2: Zach Moss, the.
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: Utah football legend, third member of the broadcast team here
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM, Bill Riley, Stevenson Sylvester,
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: and Zach Moss down on the sidelines. What does the
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: Boulder weather call for next Saturday?
- 2:10:56Speaker 2: Have you looked this up? I have not.
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: Saturday, 68 and partly cloudy.
- 2:11:02Speaker 8: Okay.
- 2:11:03Speaker 4: I was going to say, did not know, did not
- 2:11:06Speaker 4: look up the forecast, but Bill was saying on the
- 2:11:08Speaker 4: pregame show on Saturday, and he's got family that lives
- 2:11:12Speaker 4: in Colorado. I imagine it's from one of them, but
- 2:11:14Speaker 4: he said that someone told him there could be snow
- 2:11:17Speaker 4: in Boulder next week. That doesn't sound like snow for
- 2:11:20Speaker 4: the game though.
- 2:11:21Speaker 5: 68 degrees.
- 2:11:22Speaker 1: It'll just be picturesque snow on the mountains. Probably one
- 2:11:25Speaker 1: of those, the flat irons in Boulder. I think I've
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: heard it called to think that's what those are called.
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: I'm not really sure, but yeah, similar to what we
- 2:11:37Speaker 1: got going on right here.
- 2:11:38Speaker 2: It looks like rain.
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: Maybe turning into sleet, maybe a little bit of snow
- 2:11:43Speaker 1: in the higher elevations, and then Friday, Saturday, Sunday, it's
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: supposed to clear up. So if you're making a plan
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: to head to Boulder to watch the Utes in a
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: road game that they should win and should win handily,
- 2:11:55Speaker 1: weather not expected to be too bad out there in Boulder, Colorado.
- 2:11:58Speaker 8: 877-353-0700.
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: We've got some interesting texts I want to get to
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:12:05Speaker 2: We'll do that next on ESPN 700, 92 on FM.
- 2:12:11Speaker 7: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:12:14Speaker 7: the best youths football coverage.
- 2:12:16Speaker 8: Here's O.C.
- 2:12:17Speaker 7: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1.
- 2:12:27Speaker 1: FM. Welcome back to The Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:12:40Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 2:12:41Speaker 1: If you want to tell me your favorite or least
- 2:12:43Speaker 1: favorite parts about Utah's win this last weekend, 4837 says
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: we've had obvious issues getting to the quarterback from the
- 2:12:51Speaker 1: defensive end position. My question is whether it's because the
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: players themselves, or is it due to the fact that
- 2:12:55Speaker 1: the run defense gave up so much last at the
- 2:12:58Speaker 1: end of the year that the answers, the ends are
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: staying in their gaps a little bit more to defend
- 2:13:02Speaker 1: the run first. That is something we need to talk
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: about a little bit more. There's a couple of texts
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: on this. Tina says, had a really nice, well thought
- 2:13:11Speaker 1: out one earlier in the show that yeah, the, the
- 2:13:14Speaker 1: defensive ends, the, first of all, I think that the
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: skillset of these particular defensive ends actually lends them to
- 2:13:21Speaker 1: be better run defenders than they are pass rushers. And
- 2:13:26Speaker 1: obviously a perfect defensive end is good at both. And
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: he got really spoiled last year. because John Henry Daly
- 2:13:33Speaker 1: was an amazing pass rusher. And then none of us,
- 2:13:37Speaker 1: because he was so good at being a pass rusher
- 2:13:39Speaker 1: and so disruptive in that part of the game, very
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: few people noticed how important he was to the run game,
- 2:13:45Speaker 1: how disciplined he was in the run, how hard he
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: was to push off the point of attack. And when
- 2:13:50Speaker 1: he left with injury, the run defense got significantly worse.
- 2:13:55Speaker 1: So coaches are emphasizing that these guys are, I won't
- 2:14:03Speaker 1: say overemphasize, but do emphasize their run fits. And of course,
- 2:14:09Speaker 1: when it's an obvious passing down, they're peeling their ears back.
- 2:14:12Speaker 2: They're going.
- 2:14:14Speaker 1: Last week against Kansas, you had to stay disciplined in
- 2:14:16Speaker 1: your rush lane because Ike Marshall is a good enough quarterback.
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: He's going to spin out and he's going to kill
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: you if you don't do it the right way. And
- 2:14:27Speaker 1: they're good against the run. The team is excellent against
- 2:14:30Speaker 1: the run. Do you want more?
- 2:14:33Speaker 2: Yes. Have I been the one beating this drum? Yes.
- 2:14:36Speaker 1: But you also have to be fair in that these,
- 2:14:39Speaker 1: these guys and Morgan Scali addressed it again in the
- 2:14:42Speaker 1: press conference today.
- 2:14:43Speaker 2: It is going to be a question.
- 2:14:45Speaker 1: That he gets more and more annoyed with because the
- 2:14:47Speaker 1: defensive ends aren't producing sacks. And when they do get them,
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: then someone's going to ask him about that and say, Hey,
- 2:14:53Speaker 1: your defensive ends got two sacks this weekend. And he's
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: going to be like, yeah, but I've been telling you guys,
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: I don't care where those, those come from. Those guys
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: have been putting in the work. Part of it is,
- 2:15:03Speaker 1: it's not that they're not getting a good rush. Part
- 2:15:06Speaker 1: of it is they're not finishing the rush well. Like,
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: when they get a hand on the quarterback, they're not
- 2:15:11Speaker 1: taking him down. When they're getting within striking distance of
- 2:15:14Speaker 1: the quarterback, they're not getting him down. That's something that
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: needs to be corrected. The rest of it, though, is
- 2:15:23Speaker 1: they're staying where they're supposed to be. They're playing positionally
- 2:15:26Speaker 1: sound football, and we just have to accept the fact
- 2:15:29Speaker 1: that this is not... Nate Orchard ain't running out of
- 2:15:32Speaker 1: that tunnel. Hunter Dimmick is not on the team this year.
- 2:15:36Speaker 1: There's an Ellis on the team, but he's a standup linebacker.
- 2:15:39Speaker 1: He's not a rush end.
- 2:15:42Speaker 2: Okay. So that's just the way things are going to be.
- 2:15:44Speaker 1: I think with this team, your pressures and your sacks
- 2:15:48Speaker 1: are going to come from the committee rather than one
- 2:15:51Speaker 1: or two individual players.
- 2:15:56Speaker 2: Good question.
- 2:15:57Speaker 1: Monday night football going on tonight. A potential Super Bowl preview?
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: I think the obvious local connection here, local connections are
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: on both rosters, but the biggest local connection that people
- 2:16:14Speaker 1: are looking at from the Utah standpoint is, of course,
- 2:16:17Speaker 1: Cole Bishop. Cole Bishop and Dalton Kincaid on the Bills.
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: If you're a BYU fan, then... You're curious whether a
- 2:16:29Speaker 1: re-entry for Puka Nakua continues to bear fruit for the
- 2:16:32Speaker 1: Los Angeles Rams, and the answer is it probably will.
- 2:16:37Speaker 1: He had nine catches for 125 yards against the Eagles
- 2:16:40Speaker 1: last week, returning from injury time. And now if you're
- 2:16:44Speaker 1: the Bills, you've got that problem to deal with.
- 2:16:48Speaker 2: Not sure.
- 2:16:50Speaker 5: Nope.
- 2:16:50Speaker 1: Still not going to have both Miles Garrett and Aaron
- 2:16:53Speaker 1: Donald in this game for the Los Angeles Rams.
- 2:16:55Speaker 4: Yeah, we're getting to that point of the season. It
- 2:16:59Speaker 4: was the four-week IR. So we're getting to that part
- 2:17:03Speaker 4: of the season where you would expect Miles Garrett to
- 2:17:06Speaker 4: come back soon if he's healthy.
- 2:17:09Speaker 2: So we'll see. I guess not tonight.
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: Dalton Kincaid, Cole Bishop, the fighting Utes. And I guess
- 2:17:16Speaker 1: that means if you're... Not a fan of either of
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: these teams. You're going for the bills. For me, seeing
- 2:17:26Speaker 1: those two former Utes excel is double beneficial because if
- 2:17:32Speaker 1: they can have big games and they can defeat the L.A. Rams,
- 2:17:35Speaker 1: of course the Rams fall to two and three. They
- 2:17:38Speaker 1: are a divisional opponent of the San Francisco 49ers. James,
- 2:17:42Speaker 1: remind me, what's the 49ers record now?
- 2:17:44Speaker 4: I believe they're unbeaten. That's right. Is it where, who
- 2:17:48Speaker 4: did they beat yesterday? Oh, you mean the team we
- 2:17:52Speaker 4: all root for? Cause we're the home of the Seahawks.
- 2:17:54Speaker 7: Yes.
- 2:17:55Speaker 2: It's 92.
- 2:17:55Speaker 4: One FM. No, that even hurts me to say that. Uh,
- 2:17:59Speaker 4: that we root for them. But yes, you did hear
- 2:18:02Speaker 4: the Seahawks home radio call of that. Another thrilling game.
- 2:18:07Speaker 4: There were a ton of really good NFL games yesterday,
- 2:18:10Speaker 4: and your Niners beating your rival Seahawks was just one
- 2:18:13Speaker 4: of them.
- 2:18:14Speaker 1: And it really gave you a little bit of everything.
- 2:18:16Speaker 1: There's a lot of drama in this game. Drake Greenlaw
- 2:18:19Speaker 1: got suspended.
- 2:18:20Speaker 9: Oh my gosh.
- 2:18:21Speaker 1: And ejected for head-butting. Ejected yesterday.
- 2:18:24Speaker 4: And then the update today, as you just said, suspended
- 2:18:27Speaker 4: for one game because he head-butted Ernest Jones.
- 2:18:31Speaker 1: Ernest Jones was not wearing a helmet. Greenlaw was. Drake Greenlaw.
- 2:18:35Speaker 1: You know what the craziest thing about that whole scenario
- 2:18:38Speaker 1: was for me?
- 2:18:39Speaker 2: Is that the broadcast team had.
- 2:18:43Speaker 3: Ready.
- 2:18:44Speaker 1: They had in like the computer, they had the good cop,
- 2:18:48Speaker 1: bad cop graphic with Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.
- 2:18:51Speaker 2: Did you see this? I didn't see that.
- 2:18:53Speaker 1: It was, it tells you exactly who Dre Greenlaw is
- 2:18:57Speaker 1: as a player that they had a fully produced segment
- 2:19:01Speaker 1: ready to go. in the eventuality that Drake green law
- 2:19:05Speaker 1: against the Seahawks did something he was not supposed to do.
- 2:19:09Speaker 1: You know, that the director sitting back in the truck
- 2:19:12Speaker 1: and he's going, all right, give me element two on green.
- 2:19:14Speaker 1: And then somebody pushes a button and the broadcast crew
- 2:19:18Speaker 1: in their ear hears.
- 2:19:20Speaker 2: All right, here's the good cop, bad cop thing.
- 2:19:22Speaker 1: And we see it on our screen, and it's a
- 2:19:24Speaker 1: fully produced element to the show where it's Dre Greenlaw,
- 2:19:29Speaker 1: a cartoon version of Dre Greenlaw looking mean and scary,
- 2:19:34Speaker 1: and a cartoon version of Fred Warner.
- 2:19:36Speaker 2: They're wearing the same uniform.
- 2:19:37Speaker 8: Okay.
- 2:19:37Speaker 1: Very nice, looking very handsome and smiling. And it's good cop,
- 2:19:41Speaker 1: bad cop. And they talk about how well they play
- 2:19:44Speaker 1: off one another. They talk about how well they play together,
- 2:19:46Speaker 1: but how Fred Warren does everything the right way. And
- 2:19:49Speaker 1: Dre green law is the wild card. He's got screws loose.
- 2:19:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:19:52Speaker 1: But when they play together, the 49ers, those two playing
- 2:19:56Speaker 1: together are a five point difference for the opposition.
- 2:20:01Speaker 5: Wow.
- 2:20:03Speaker 4: Anyway, Fred Warner, Another forced fumble early in the game too.
- 2:20:08Speaker 4: Just continuing to do Fred Warner things.
- 2:20:11Speaker 2: He is so.
- 2:20:12Speaker 1: Good at punching the ball out. He's the best inside
- 2:20:15Speaker 1: linebacker in the game.
- 2:20:17Speaker 2: It's crazy, right?
- 2:20:20Speaker 1: It's awesome to see Brock Purdy continue to play well.
- 2:20:24Speaker 1: Dan Patrick this morning said that he is the MVP
- 2:20:28Speaker 1: front runner. We're only five weeks into the season. We
- 2:20:30Speaker 1: don't need to have that conversation yet. Not even a
- 2:20:33Speaker 1: third of the way through. But okay, he's the September-October
- 2:20:39Speaker 1: MVP so far.
- 2:20:41Speaker 2: Just incredible stuff. He's been awesome.
- 2:20:44Speaker 4: He deserves to be listed as an MVP candidate, and
- 2:20:49Speaker 4: that's what we're doing this early in the season. We're
- 2:20:52Speaker 4: compiling candidates. But it is wild that former Mr. Irrelevant,
- 2:20:59Speaker 4: as well as he's played up until now in his
- 2:21:01Speaker 4: NFL career, It's wild that this guy is in the
- 2:21:07Speaker 4: MVP conversation at any point in the season.
- 2:21:10Speaker 2: That's how good he's been, though, to start this year.
- 2:21:12Speaker 1: Dre Greenlaw, he served a one-game suspension last year for
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: unsportsmanlike conduct when he ran toward a referee and verbally
- 2:21:21Speaker 1: threatened him.
- 2:21:24Speaker 2: I'm going to kill you.
- 2:21:25Speaker 1: Yesterday was the third time. Greg Greenlaw has been ejected
- 2:21:29Speaker 1: in his career. He was also disqualified for a late
- 2:21:33Speaker 1: hit on Justin Herbert in 2022 and for another sideline
- 2:21:39Speaker 1: fight against the Eagles in 2023.
- 2:21:41Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. So what is up with this San Francisco?
- 2:21:45Speaker 4: There are two biggest teams, the biggest fall teams with
- 2:21:50Speaker 4: the biggest fall wings. Both have guys named Dre. who
- 2:21:53Speaker 4: have screws loose Draymond green and Drake green law.
- 2:21:56Speaker 1: Also Drake green law paid a $ 12, 000 fine last week
- 2:22:01Speaker 1: because he would not stop cursing at Sean Payton on
- 2:22:06Speaker 1: the Denver sideline and actually had to be kept away
- 2:22:09Speaker 1: from Peyton. When the teams were shaking hands, Drake was
- 2:22:13Speaker 1: running up to show Peyton screaming at him to get
- 2:22:16Speaker 1: the bleep off of his field.
- 2:22:18Speaker 2: After the 49ers beat the Broncos.
- 2:22:20Speaker 4: Denver, or was that, was that Santa Clara? I think
- 2:22:24Speaker 4: that one was in Santa. That was Levi's stadium.
- 2:22:26Speaker 2: He is Drake.
- 2:22:27Speaker 1: We lost nuts, but he's like, he's, he's the guy
- 2:22:31Speaker 1: that you're happy when he's your guy.
- 2:22:35Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:22:35Speaker 1: And you hate him if he's on any other team
- 2:22:38Speaker 1: Speaker 0.
- 2:22:38Speaker 4: 7, which heads the dream on green comparison, because he
- 2:22:42Speaker 4: is the dream on green for the other San Francisco
- 2:22:44Speaker 4: team in this case.
- 2:22:45Speaker 8: Yes.
- 2:22:46Speaker 1: It's absolutely fantastic that the 49ers have him. And I like,
- 2:22:50Speaker 1: if you didn't get a chance to watch it, go
- 2:22:52Speaker 1: watch the replay they had in the back pocket, ready
- 2:22:56Speaker 1: to go a fully produced element for two minutes of
- 2:23:00Speaker 1: television on, Hey, isn't this Dre Greenlaw guy, a psycho,
- 2:23:04Speaker 1: but look how cool Fred Warner is. It's just, if
- 2:23:07Speaker 1: you're that predictably crazy, then you better have the right
- 2:23:11Speaker 1: coaching staff to tolerate it and the right kind of
- 2:23:13Speaker 1: teammates to tolerate. Speaker 0 7, 7, 8, and Fred Warner. Absolutely.
- 2:23:17Speaker 4: At least from an external perspective seems to be the
- 2:23:21Speaker 4: exact right kind of teammate in the same room as
- 2:23:24Speaker 4: him to be like, Hey, go off dude. But also remember,
- 2:23:29Speaker 4: we need you on the field.
- 2:23:45Speaker 1: It was at
- 2:23:47Speaker 1: the Avengers movies where the only one that can calm
- 2:23:50Speaker 1: down the Hulk is Scarlett Johansson's character.
- 2:23:53Speaker 2: It's the black widow is black widow.
- 2:23:55Speaker 1: She's the only one. Hey, son's getting low or whatever.
- 2:23:58Speaker 1: The stupid catchphrases. I think that that's Fred Warner with
- 2:24:01Speaker 1: Drake Greenlaw. He's like just going crazy. He's fighting everybody
- 2:24:04Speaker 1: on the sideline. Of course there's Seahawks and they are
- 2:24:07Speaker 1: willing to oblige. It's going to continue until finally Fred
- 2:24:11Speaker 1: Warner's like, all right, all right, all right.
- 2:24:13Speaker 2: He comes over.
- 2:24:15Speaker 1: Everyone respects Dre green or respects Fred Warner so much
- 2:24:19Speaker 1: on the, on the Seahawks side of things that they're like, okay,
- 2:24:21Speaker 1: let Fred come in and get this psycho out of here. Okay.
- 2:24:24Speaker 2: Fred's here. We're good. Okay. I mean, I think that's,
- 2:24:27Speaker 2: you're probably right on.
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: It's we, get Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw on the
- 2:24:33Speaker 1: show in studio. We got to ask Fred, if he
- 2:24:35Speaker 1: actually does say something about the sun going down, whenever
- 2:24:38Speaker 1: he says.
- 2:24:40Speaker 2: Like a verbal catch phrase that calms him down. All right.
- 2:24:46Speaker 1: One more segment to go. We'll do a little crosstalk.
- 2:24:48Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell show on ESPN, 700 and 92
- 2:24:50Speaker 1: on FM.
- 2:24:58Speaker 7: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:25:00Speaker 7: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:25:08Speaker 1: Final segment of the show here on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:25:13Speaker 1: Advanced Window Products has the best discounts of the year.
- 2:25:16Speaker 1: 60 months with 0% interest on all the financing offers.
- 2:25:21Speaker 2: Well, that's if you qualify.
- 2:25:24Speaker 1: $ 2, 500 off, 10 windows or more. Telemoc sent you. Lifetime
- 2:25:31Speaker 1: warranty on the windows as well. Great stuff on the
- 2:25:36Speaker 1: text line today. And we got to get the phone
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: calls fired back up. But this Utah football team coming
- 2:25:42Speaker 1: off a victory over Kansas improves to 5-0 on the season.
- 2:25:47Speaker 1: It's their first 5-0 start since, I believe, 2015. Morgan
- 2:25:51Speaker 1: Scali becomes the first coach to win his first six
- 2:25:56Speaker 1: games in Utah football history. The first head coach. First
- 2:26:01Speaker 1: guy to start 5-0 since Jim Fossil. Meanwhile, you're looking
- 2:26:09Speaker 1: at teams like the Oregon Ducks who are out of
- 2:26:11Speaker 1: the rankings. They started the year in the top five
- 2:26:14Speaker 1: for national championship odds, and now they're out of the rankings.
- 2:26:19Speaker 1: Now there's still a path to the playoff. for every
- 2:26:23Speaker 1: team in the big 10, basically. Um, there's obviously a
- 2:26:27Speaker 1: path to the playoff for this university of Utah football team.
- 2:26:31Speaker 1: If they can continue to answer these questions the right way,
- 2:26:34Speaker 1: but man, what a weekend in a whiteout at rice
- 2:26:37Speaker 1: Eccles stadium. And now it is time to turn things
- 2:26:40Speaker 1: over to Spence check. It's on the drive. He's here
- 2:26:43Speaker 1: in our Broadway studios. I Spence got a little dicey.
- 2:26:46Speaker 2: Didn't it?
- 2:26:47Speaker 11: Um, you could feel, uh, like a lot of tension
- 2:26:52Speaker 11: in that stadium at halftime, then into the third quarter.
- 2:26:56Speaker 11: I mean, I'll reiterate what I said. I think when
- 2:26:58Speaker 11: they were in Ames, I never thought they were in
- 2:27:01Speaker 11: danger of losing the game. I'm a little bit stunned
- 2:27:04Speaker 11: that they covered with that fourth quarter performance. All in all,
- 2:27:08Speaker 11: you know, it's all good, right? But was there a
- 2:27:12Speaker 11: point of that game that you were nervous and concerned?
- 2:27:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:27:17Speaker 1: When Kansas was on the two yard line, And went
- 2:27:21Speaker 1: for the score because of, actually, what I was nervous
- 2:27:26Speaker 1: about was that they were going to run the same
- 2:27:28Speaker 1: play or some version of the same concept that got
- 2:27:32Speaker 1: Semitel Longa his first touchdown. Because big number 44 for Kansas,
- 2:27:36Speaker 1: I don't remember what his name is.
- 2:27:38Speaker 2: A capable blocker.
- 2:27:40Speaker 1: And pass catcher, not a 320 pounder, but you know,
- 2:27:44Speaker 1: tight end fullback type that had done some really nice
- 2:27:47Speaker 1: things on that same drive. And I thought Andy Kotelnicki
- 2:27:50Speaker 1: with a mobile quarterback who had been killing Utah with
- 2:27:54Speaker 1: his evasiveness. I thought you were going to give him
- 2:27:56Speaker 1: a chance with space in front of him. to have
- 2:28:00Speaker 1: a run pass option. And then the defender is put
- 2:28:03Speaker 1: in a situation where do I stay on? Maybe it's 44.
- 2:28:08Speaker 1: Maybe it's somebody else who's effectively running around in the flat, right?
- 2:28:12Speaker 1: Who's three yards away from this quarterback. Who's now two
- 2:28:15Speaker 1: yards away from the goal line. Do I leave my
- 2:28:19Speaker 1: pass coverage here to try to tackle the quarterback short
- 2:28:21Speaker 1: of the goal line? Or do I stay on the
- 2:28:24Speaker 1: pass coverage? And then if my pursuit is, from the
- 2:28:27Speaker 1: front line guys has not been good. He then walks
- 2:28:30Speaker 1: into the end zone. I was worried that you were
- 2:28:32Speaker 1: going to get put in that scenario. And coral Nikki
- 2:28:34Speaker 1: did not run a pass route behind the bootleg effectively.
- 2:28:39Speaker 1: And I thought that was crazy that he didn't do that.
- 2:28:42Speaker 1: Utah gets a stop, but, but if they had scored there,
- 2:28:45Speaker 1: I was nervous. They were going to score there. And
- 2:28:47Speaker 1: now we're talking about a real game. Now we're talking
- 2:28:50Speaker 1: about a big problem for the Utes. Instead, they get
- 2:28:53Speaker 1: the stop. And then three plays later, Way Sean Parker
- 2:28:57Speaker 1: goes 90 yards.
- 2:28:58Speaker 10: So if Kansas scores there, what is it?
- 2:29:01Speaker 2: 31, 27 at that point was a 27, 24.
- 2:29:03Speaker 10: It was 27, 24.
- 2:29:04Speaker 11: It would have made it a three point game. It
- 2:29:08Speaker 11: would have made it a three point game.
- 2:29:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:29:10Speaker 3: All right. Yeah.
- 2:29:11Speaker 11: I mean the fourth down stop, then way Sean's home run,
- 2:29:14Speaker 11: put it to bed, but it was pretty sloppy. I mean,
- 2:29:17Speaker 11: I would, I was texting with, with somebody who I'll
- 2:29:20Speaker 11: tell you when we, when we break, I was just
- 2:29:23Speaker 11: congratulating on the win.
- 2:29:24Speaker 10: It's a good win.
- 2:29:25Speaker 2: Like, no, it wasn't.
- 2:29:26Speaker 11: I would imagine Morgan and those coaches, going back and
- 2:29:30Speaker 11: looking at the tape, maybe it is kind of what
- 2:29:32Speaker 11: you want. Just continue to comfortably win, cover the spread.
- 2:29:36Speaker 11: They're the only team in college football that's won every
- 2:29:38Speaker 11: game by 14 or more points. I have not had
- 2:29:42Speaker 11: a moment this season, so far, where I felt like
- 2:29:45Speaker 11: they were going to lose the game. But I would say,
- 2:29:49Speaker 11: you tell me what you think. I think that was
- 2:29:50Speaker 11: probably their sloppiest game today.
- 2:29:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think.
- 2:29:56Speaker 1: And I won't call it a sloppy game. There were
- 2:29:58Speaker 1: sloppy portions of the game. Second quarter got really bogged
- 2:30:01Speaker 1: down and terrible. You know, the third quarter against Iowa
- 2:30:05Speaker 1: State was kind of bad. Like you, I was never
- 2:30:07Speaker 1: worried they were going to lose the game, but you
- 2:30:09Speaker 1: want it to look better because I... I thought Iowa
- 2:30:12Speaker 1: state was a much better team overall than Kansas. Kansas
- 2:30:15Speaker 1: surprised me. Morgan Scali talked about it in his press
- 2:30:19Speaker 1: conference today. He was like, look, they're good at running
- 2:30:21Speaker 1: the ball. So we decided they weren't going to run
- 2:30:23Speaker 1: the ball against us. You got to throw to beat us.
- 2:30:25Speaker 1: And then he threw well, he.
- 2:30:27Speaker 11: Threw really well. And honestly, there were, I felt, I
- 2:30:30Speaker 11: hate to be this guy. There were some throws and
- 2:30:33Speaker 11: catches that felt tremendously lucky, right? Like they'd fit in
- 2:30:36Speaker 11: the smallest window over Jackson, Benny's fingertips and, or Davis's
- 2:30:41Speaker 11: fingertips that just like somehow some way found the wide receiver,
- 2:30:46Speaker 11: but no, you're right. You get, you know, you, you,
- 2:30:48Speaker 11: you gotta take something away. I think Kansas is front
- 2:30:51Speaker 11: seven is pretty good. That linebacker was everywhere. That DNs
- 2:30:54Speaker 11: is pretty good, but I kind of feel, who do
- 2:30:56Speaker 11: you head to head? Who do you think is better?
- 2:30:58Speaker 11: Iowa state or Kansas? Who would you pick today?
- 2:31:00Speaker 1: I would say I would say, yeah, I think, I
- 2:31:02Speaker 1: think Ike Marshall found. So they found something in him
- 2:31:05Speaker 1: and he found something in himself that, He's.
- 2:31:07Speaker 2: Not going to finish his career as a sophomore.
- 2:31:09Speaker 1: He's not going to finish his career at Kansas with
- 2:31:11Speaker 1: the escapability he showed against Utah, his willingness to keep
- 2:31:15Speaker 1: his eyes downfield and deliver a good ball. Even when
- 2:31:18Speaker 1: his hips aren't right, his platform's not right. Like that
- 2:31:20Speaker 1: kid has some crazy talent and you don't want to
- 2:31:23Speaker 1: see him in two years, but it was annoying that
- 2:31:27Speaker 1: he was able to like sidestep out of, I mean,
- 2:31:29Speaker 1: John who halls in his pocket and he gets away
- 2:31:33Speaker 1: clean and there was a play where cash Dylan fell
- 2:31:36Speaker 1: and like his helmet was on the guy's heels and
- 2:31:39Speaker 1: he gets away clean, right? That that's the kind of
- 2:31:41Speaker 1: stuff that you can't get away with against Houston. You
- 2:31:43Speaker 1: can't get away with against BYU. We know exactly what
- 2:31:46Speaker 1: that looks like against BYU last year. Have bear Bachmeier
- 2:31:50Speaker 1: in the grasp and you don't finish.
- 2:31:51Speaker 2: He turns it into a game winning drive.
- 2:31:53Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:31:53Speaker 1: You know, that's the kind of stuff where if you
- 2:31:56Speaker 1: put it on film, you have to erase it from.
- 2:31:58Speaker 2: The film before you play against better competition.
- 2:32:01Speaker 11: Yeah, your point about Baer is well taken because pressure
- 2:32:04Speaker 11: in the quarterback's great. You've got to get him on
- 2:32:06Speaker 11: the ground. And the defense isn't doing that this year.
- 2:32:09Speaker 11: Zero sacks from the DMs so far.
- 2:32:12Speaker 2: Zero sacks in this game.
- 2:32:13Speaker 11: Zero sacks in the game. But, I mean, a ton
- 2:32:15Speaker 11: of pressures. But to your point, you've got to finish
- 2:32:17Speaker 11: the play. If you can't get that kid on the ground,
- 2:32:20Speaker 11: it's a little bit worrisome thinking about what Baer could
- 2:32:23Speaker 11: potentially be able to do.
- 2:32:24Speaker 1: And don't even look that far ahead. Connor Wegman, if
- 2:32:27Speaker 1: you don't put him on the ground... then he will
- 2:32:31Speaker 1: make it a game. He will make it a scary
- 2:32:32Speaker 1: opportunity for Houston to kind of upset whatever you're trying
- 2:32:37Speaker 1: to do for the rest of the year. And you
- 2:32:39Speaker 1: just have to play clean football. This team is 5-0
- 2:32:43Speaker 1: without playing a complete game yet, without being consistent and
- 2:32:47Speaker 1: good in all four quarters. They're a really good football team.
- 2:32:50Speaker 1: They've got plenty of weapons. You saw another one emerge
- 2:32:53Speaker 1: this last week in the wide receiving core. Way Sean
- 2:32:56Speaker 1: Parker is... making his case for offensive player of the
- 2:33:00Speaker 1: year in the conference. And it's a tight race. There's
- 2:33:02Speaker 1: going to be a lot of guys that you have
- 2:33:04Speaker 1: to put that honor next to. And it's just awesome
- 2:33:07Speaker 1: to see what this team is, is becoming with. I've
- 2:33:11Speaker 1: beat this point to death, a new head coach, a
- 2:33:15Speaker 1: new offensive coordinator, a new defensive coordinator, a brand new
- 2:33:18Speaker 1: offensive line, a brand new defensive line. They have no
- 2:33:22Speaker 1: business being undefeated right now on paper, but they are.
- 2:33:26Speaker 1: And I think they're going to win by four scores
- 2:33:27Speaker 1: in Boulder. And we're still going to come in the
- 2:33:30Speaker 1: following Monday and say, what do we know about this team?
- 2:33:34Speaker 2: How good are they?
- 2:33:36Speaker 11: Well, I mean, look, I want to cover them with
- 2:33:39Speaker 11: the expectation that they're winning this league, right? Like, I
- 2:33:43Speaker 11: don't want to analyze these games being like, oh, sweet,
- 2:33:47Speaker 11: you crushed all these. They did it last year. They
- 2:33:49Speaker 11: crushed all the bad teams a year ago. They lost
- 2:33:52Speaker 11: the two games they couldn't lose. So I am curious
- 2:33:55Speaker 11: to learn through this process. about what a curb stomping
- 2:33:59Speaker 11: of Kansas means against Houston and BYU.
- 2:34:02Speaker 10: And hopefully eventually in the big 12 championship game.
- 2:34:05Speaker 11: So I'm not trying to be nitpicky, but I'm talking
- 2:34:07Speaker 11: to people there at halftime on Saturday and everyone's kind
- 2:34:11Speaker 11: of like, they just lose focus. They're really talented. Are
- 2:34:14Speaker 11: they reading their own articles? Do they think they better
- 2:34:16Speaker 11: they're better than they actually are? Cause I think we're
- 2:34:19Speaker 11: all just buying our time until these tougher teams rolling
- 2:34:24Speaker 11: to Salt Lake until the harder games manifest themselves. And,
- 2:34:28Speaker 11: You don't want to look too far ahead, but the
- 2:34:30Speaker 11: potential of Morgan maybe winning the league year one and
- 2:34:33Speaker 11: going to a CFP and playing like Alabama, right?
- 2:34:37Speaker 2: Like in the first year. What is he, Kenny Dillingham?
- 2:34:40Speaker 11: It is wild to consider that all of these things
- 2:34:43Speaker 11: are a possibility, but they are. But I think it's
- 2:34:47Speaker 11: probably safe to say, I think Morgan would say this himself.
- 2:34:49Speaker 11: He did say it himself today. There are a lot
- 2:34:52Speaker 11: of things we've got to clean up, you know, if
- 2:34:53Speaker 11: we want to win the league.
- 2:34:54Speaker 2: Look, nothing has happened that we didn't think was going
- 2:34:56Speaker 2: to happen.
- 2:34:57Speaker 11: Mm-hmm.
- 2:34:58Speaker 1: That's it's great to see how far along the offensive
- 2:35:02Speaker 1: line is. It's great to see how creative the offense is,
- 2:35:05Speaker 1: but you go back to big 12 media days when
- 2:35:07Speaker 1: you and I were sitting next to each other and
- 2:35:09Speaker 1: we were talking to every player and every coach who
- 2:35:11Speaker 1: would come by the table and we were looking at
- 2:35:13Speaker 1: everybody's schedule and we were like, Utah is going to
- 2:35:16Speaker 1: be six and oh, and then maybe Houston's a problem.
- 2:35:19Speaker 8: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:35:20Speaker 10: And that hasn't changed.
- 2:35:21Speaker 1: It hasn't changed. And it's not going to change. I
- 2:35:23Speaker 1: don't think in Boulder this weekend, Or Isaac Wilson. They're
- 2:35:27Speaker 1: just going to light him up.
- 2:35:29Speaker 10: Is he officially a starter?
- 2:35:30Speaker 2: I don't know if he is, but I think he is.
- 2:35:32Speaker 11: Well, Deion might throw him off the team between now
- 2:35:34Speaker 11: and Saturday. Every week's an adventure down there, dude. You
- 2:35:37Speaker 11: never know how it's going to go. Honestly, I said
- 2:35:39Speaker 11: this on the show last week.
- 2:35:41Speaker 1: If Colorado had had a bye last week, I'm not
- 2:35:44Speaker 1: sure that you're coaching against Deion Sanders.
- 2:35:46Speaker 10: It's wild to consider.
- 2:35:48Speaker 2: I'm not sure whoever....
- 2:35:50Speaker 1: Whoever they play after Utah is coaching against Deion Sanders.
- 2:35:53Speaker 1: They could get that ugly.
- 2:35:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:35:55Speaker 10: They owe him a lot of money.
- 2:35:59Speaker 11: It's just weird that we're here with him after, was
- 2:36:02Speaker 11: it Pac-12 media day that you and I went to
- 2:36:04Speaker 11: before big told me, I think the first media day
- 2:36:06Speaker 11: you and I did together was a Pac-12 media day, right?
- 2:36:09Speaker 10: When Deion had been hired. Yeah, it was because there
- 2:36:12Speaker 10: was the show girls.
- 2:36:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:36:13Speaker 10: Am I remembering that correctly?
- 2:36:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:36:15Speaker 11: Where we were able to, Chat with Shiloh, but not Shador.
- 2:36:19Speaker 11: And everybody was, I can remember.
- 2:36:20Speaker 2: No, that was still Big 12. Was it?
- 2:36:22Speaker 3: I think.
- 2:36:24Speaker 11: I'm remembering Showgirls. Maybe that's a me deal. Big 12
- 2:36:28Speaker 11: media days in Vegas, Showgirls were there.
- 2:36:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:36:33Speaker 11: But I can remember we walked in and one of
- 2:36:35Speaker 11: the staffers in the building was like, hey, I heard
- 2:36:38Speaker 11: Deion Sanders is going to be here today. I'm like, yeah,
- 2:36:41Speaker 11: he coaches one of the teams. And she didn't even
- 2:36:44Speaker 11: know it was like a football deal. She just knew
- 2:36:45Speaker 11: who Deion was. Because he was such a massive celebrity.
- 2:36:48Speaker 11: And his first few games when they beat, like, I
- 2:36:51Speaker 11: don't know, it was like Colorado State. That was a
- 2:36:54Speaker 11: great game. The first win was like Nebraska. You beat
- 2:36:56Speaker 11: Colorado State and Nebraska? And then Stephen A. Smith was like,
- 2:36:59Speaker 11: he should coach the Cowboys. And we're like, dude, hold on.
- 2:37:04Speaker 11: Give it a second. Now you fast forward three-plus years,
- 2:37:08Speaker 11: and he might not be the coach at the end
- 2:37:10Speaker 11: of the year. It's wild how this stuff just ebbs
- 2:37:12Speaker 11: and flows.
- 2:37:12Speaker 2: His buyout is $ 25 million. I know.
- 2:37:16Speaker 10: Well, at Michigan, that's nothing. At Colorado, that's a lot
- 2:37:18Speaker 10: of money.
- 2:37:19Speaker 1: As far as buyouts go, the problem is, right, if
- 2:37:23Speaker 1: you fire Deion Sanders at the University of Colorado, who
- 2:37:26Speaker 1: wants to come in and clean up his mess?
- 2:37:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:37:30Speaker 2: It's fair.
- 2:37:31Speaker 1: Uh, anyway, uh, stay tuned for the drive. Thanks for
- 2:37:35Speaker 1: listening to the Sean O'Connell show. We'll do it again
- 2:37:37Speaker 1: tomorrow on ESPN, 700 and 92 on FM.
