- 1:39Kyle, what is up, my friends? Hi guys, how we doing?
- 1:43We're good, man. Obviously.
- 1:44I just want to, I want to tell you something.
- 1:46I, I before, before we came back from break, I was in the
- 1:51bathroom yakking. I've been dealing, I don't know,
- 1:53I got dizzy in the beginning of the show.
- 1:56I, I've been all, all over the place, but I'm, I'm here and I'm
- 2:00working and I'm happy to be here.
- 2:02But yeah, I it's very nice to have you on the show, bro.
- 2:06No, you're, you're a gamer. I respect that.
- 2:08We've all done that and come back into the game.
- 2:10So I'm I'm impressed. I'm trying.
- 2:12In more ways than one. Yeah.
- 2:14In. More ways than one.
- 2:16I I screw when we went to break I I was telling my producer over
- 2:20here and my board up guy, I'm going to the bathroom, I'm
- 2:22going, I'm going to yak. I'm going to be right back.
- 2:25And he just told me he's like, are you OK as like I'm going to
- 2:27be a gamer. I'm going to get through this
- 2:29show no matter what. So if people you're seeing me
- 2:32all over the place, that's why I don't know.
- 2:35I have Vertigo and sometimes I get this and I'm dizzy and I'm
- 2:39trying to to figure out where I am.
- 2:42And you, you feel like the weight is turning one way and
- 2:46your body's going the other. I don't know it, it's, it's a
- 2:49different, it's a different kind of feeling.
- 2:50I don't know if anybody dealt with Vertigo, but if you have,
- 2:53it is the worst feeling in the world when you have no control
- 2:55over it. But Speaking of a team that
- 2:58doesn't need any Vertigo, they're playing great baseball
- 3:01right now, and that's the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 3:03They're playing the best baseball I have ever seen them
- 3:05play. You would have thought when you
- 3:08seen all these different moves over the last couple of years,
- 3:10they lose their GM, they lose their manager, and you would
- 3:14think they would fall flat on their face.
- 3:16They rebuild this team. They have all these young,
- 3:18talented players. They have one of the best
- 3:20pitching Staffs right now in baseball, one of the better
- 3:23bullpens in baseball. What do you think has changed
- 3:26this team team over the last couple of weeks that's made this
- 3:30team one of the best or if not the best team in baseball?
- 3:32Well, they start hitting. I mean that that's part of it.
- 3:35They pitched the entire year. I think that, you know, Pat
- 3:38Murphy's a different kind of manager to where, I mean, he was
- 3:42a Gold Gloves boxer. Like his his mindset is
- 3:45different than most and that, you know, he's OK playing old
- 3:50school baseball. And that's kind of the way
- 3:52they're built. They've been built that way the
- 3:54last few years is not necessarily going to bang as as
- 3:57many home runs as everybody, but they're OK with it and the
- 4:00identity they're OK with. They kind of live with the small
- 4:03market mentality. And now you look up, I looked
- 4:06just a minute ago. I mean, they've got 79 wins.
- 4:08The Dodgers have 72. If you would have thought we got
- 4:12to this time in the season that the Brewers had seven more wins
- 4:15than the Dodgers. I I think that we we could have
- 4:18made some money in Vegas. So we'll see if it keeps going.
- 4:21But ultimately, it's the run is is pretty cool.
- 4:24And Murph's a great dude, man. He was, he was in college at
- 4:27Arizona State when I was in college.
- 4:28So I've known him for a long time and he's a great fit in
- 4:31Milwaukee. Yeah, he, I, I got, I got Murph
- 4:35in the College World Series, if you remember KP.
- 4:38Yeah. So yeah, he, he didn't like me
- 4:40very much to kill me. Actually, that doesn't.
- 4:43That doesn't surprise me. Yeah, we we were playing at
- 4:46Arizona State my sophomore year and I gave up seven in the 1st.
- 4:50And they kept me in the game and the lead off hitter was
- 4:54chirping. So I drilled him in the third.
- 4:58And then he came back up in the 5th and my roommate was the
- 5:00catcher. He came out, he's like, you're
- 5:01not going to do it again? I'm like, no, I'm not going to
- 5:03do it again. And he came up, I hit him in the
- 5:05exact same spot. And Murph was coaching third.
- 5:08I didn't know Murph. And out of the corner of my eye
- 5:11I see Murph coming at me. I've never seen a third base
- 5:14coach go after somebody. And I thought, Oh no, this is
- 5:18like, he's going to win this one.
- 5:20And the umpire wrapped him up and they didn't throw me out.
- 5:23So when you guys were playing him, it was the first time I'd
- 5:26ever met him. And the guy that I had drilled
- 5:30was his assistant coach, who I had never met.
- 5:34And it was Michael Moreno. And he came charging up to me
- 5:38like it was going to tackle me, stopped an inch away from me.
- 5:41Murph busted out laughing. And since then, every time I see
- 5:44Murph has has been great, man. He's he's a good dude.
- 5:47Yeah, that was a couple years right after you started, which
- 5:50he has. Right.
- 5:52Yeah. First, I've always, I mean,
- 5:54we've known each other a long time.
- 5:55I've always wondered what made you pick Stanford?
- 6:00I was there when they won it in 1988.
- 6:04I was in the stands. That's I'm a lot older than you
- 6:06guys and I don't know, I didn't even know where it was at the
- 6:11time when they won it. It just they won it and they
- 6:13signed my program and I thought it was really cool.
- 6:15And so I ended up, you know, the times were different then you
- 6:22had to recruit yourself if you were in Nebraska.
- 6:25So I sent letters to like 80 coaches and one of them was
- 6:28Stanford. And then I figured out the long
- 6:30distance code. That's how long ago it was in
- 6:33the school. And I would go in the training
- 6:35room and call all these different coaches and try to
- 6:38recruit myself because that was the only thing you could do.
- 6:41And Stanford said, all right, if if you want to give it a shot,
- 6:44then come out and go to a camp. And I went out, went to a camp,
- 6:47and I don't know if you've ever been on campus, but it's pretty
- 6:50cool. Yeah.
- 6:52Looked a little bit different than Alcorn, Nebraska.
- 6:55So when they said yes and offered me a full 10%
- 6:58scholarship, I said that sounds like a great idea.
- 7:02So I want to ask about the the recruiting rules that have
- 7:04changed now with the NCAA passing the law, the law,
- 7:07obviously the the schools could play the payers direct play the
- 7:10pay the players directly. Like what are your thoughts to
- 7:12that and how it'll impact college baseball's?
- 7:14I know you followed that very closely about being an analyst.
- 7:16Yeah, I, I think, I mean, shit, we live in a capitalist society.
- 7:22If somebody wants to pay to do something, you should be able to
- 7:24take the money. So I know that it makes things
- 7:29like, I would not want to be a college coach right now because
- 7:32the coaching component of your job is so much different than
- 7:34it's ever been. You don't get a coach as much.
- 7:36You got to do all the other stuff.
- 7:38But again, I mean, if, if somebody thinks that they're
- 7:41willing to pay you to, to go play college baseball or
- 7:44football or basketball or row for that matter, like fine, I
- 7:48mean, I think that's totally fine now.
- 7:51I mean, it does create a bunch of inequity in college sports
- 7:53and that's that's not going to change.
- 7:55So it becomes one of two things like you can get paid in life to
- 7:59do anything else. So I have a hard time saying
- 8:02that we can't pay college athletes if people want to pay
- 8:04them, But yet if they want to go sell a car or if they're good at
- 8:07music or whatever it is, they can get paid for that, but they
- 8:10can't get paid for doing what they do on the field.
- 8:12So I I think it's fine, but it does create a a pretty
- 8:17unfortunate mess sometimes. As everybody knows, we are
- 8:20talking to former Brewers pitcher and current ESPN
- 8:23baseball analyst Kyle Peterson. You know, it's so interesting
- 8:26when you watch the New York Yankees and everybody keeps
- 8:28talking about Aaron Boone. It's Aaron Boone's fault.
- 8:31You go on social media, every single analyst is state.
- 8:34Actually, I've been speaking to a bunch of analysts off air and
- 8:38a lot of these analysts don't believe it's just Aaron Boone.
- 8:41It could be management. It could be some of the analytic
- 8:45guys. When you look at the Yankees
- 8:46right now. Have you seen the Yankees this
- 8:48bad at the end of the season? When was the last time you can
- 8:51remember the Yankees this bad at the tail end of the season?
- 8:55I'm not a Yankees game, the guy like you guys are that follows
- 8:58him every year. But Booty was my partner for a
- 9:01couple years in the booth. And so I got to know Booty
- 9:05actually the year before, well, the year that he got the Yankees
- 9:08job, we were doing the Little League World Series together and
- 9:10it was towards the end of the Little League World Series.
- 9:12Like he's like, listen, man, I don't know if I'm going to do
- 9:14this TV thing anymore. And then ultimately the Yankees
- 9:17piece came up and he got the gig and and has been there ever
- 9:20since. I've never seen a manager that
- 9:23had any effect on a guy hitting or throwing strikes or doing a
- 9:28variety of other things. Now you know, they, they can
- 9:32control a clubhouse and do a lot of things like that and get guys
- 9:34comfortable and comfortable in roles.
- 9:37But ultimately, if you don't have the dudes or if you do have
- 9:39the dudes and they're not doing what you thought they were going
- 9:41to do, then the easy scapegoat is the manager or the management
- 9:45or anything else because you can't fire your whole team.
- 9:46That's, that's, that just doesn't really work.
- 9:48So I'm biased for Booney because he's a buddy, but ultimately I
- 9:53know the expectations are a little bit different than most.
- 9:56So I, I, I, I mean, I can't directly answer your question as
- 10:00to whether I've ever seen them this bad.
- 10:01I also know they're like 4 out or 4 1/2 or whatever it is and
- 10:05you have a good two weeks and amazingly he's good again.
- 10:08It's crazy how good managers are when teams play well and how
- 10:12much managers suck when they don't play well but yet they
- 10:15they haven't played any part in actually throwing a pitch or to
- 10:19play. But I mean, that's the nature of
- 10:20the game and he knew what he signed up for and honestly, it's
- 10:23been a pretty decent run. Kyle, that's why I've been going
- 10:25back and forth and I've been arguing with Yankee fans.
- 10:27You can't blame the manager for Aaron Judge getting hurt.
- 10:30You can't blame the manager because Jazz Chisholm can't hit
- 10:34the ball or hit hit a home run at the Home Run Derby.
- 10:38This is not Aaron Boone's fault. Aaron Boone is going out there.
- 10:42He's following the analytics. He's following what the
- 10:45executives are telling him, what Brian Cashman is telling him on
- 10:48the phone. And and this is what he's doing.
- 10:50He's following the criteria of being a manager for the New York
- 10:54Yankees. So you're going to blame him
- 10:56because the team isn't playing well or they're not pitching or
- 10:59they're not throwing strikes or some of these guys can't stay
- 11:02healthy. And Max, nobody thought Max
- 11:04Freed was going to fall off the way he has because of the
- 11:06blisters on his finger. Is that Aaron Boone's fault?
- 11:11No, I mean, I don't. I think it's sports, but we all,
- 11:15everybody's got to find a scapegoat.
- 11:17That's the way it works. And the easiest scapegoat is the
- 11:19manager in baseball because it's it's easy.
- 11:23I mean, you fall back on that. Well, it's got to be his fault.
- 11:25Well, not really. I mean, it it's he walks into a
- 11:28clubhouse, he's got 25 names he can write down.
- 11:30That's it like that. That's the extent of what you
- 11:32can do. And after you do that, I mean,
- 11:33you can make some bullpen moves and and do the things you can
- 11:35during the course of the game, but you know, it's not like you
- 11:38can magically go get Terek's Google and he's going to throw
- 11:42every five days. And now we're really good.
- 11:44AJ was my college catcher and I'm in a joke with him a while
- 11:48ago. I'm like, man, you get really
- 11:49smart when Scooble throws. Like you're brilliant every time
- 11:53he goes out there. You're a really good manager
- 11:55when Scooble is on the mount. You're really good manager when
- 11:59you have really good players. It it just that that's the way
- 12:03that sports work. You're a really good football
- 12:04coach when you have a really, really good quarterback.
- 12:07Like it's amazing how much better you get when the skill
- 12:09position and the guy that touches the ball the most is
- 12:12really good. So I I mean, again, this isn't a
- 12:15boon apologist deal. It's just I, I think that, and I
- 12:19hope this isn't seen the wrong way, but I think the most over
- 12:24talked about position in sports is a manager.
- 12:29I really do like football. You're calling plays every
- 12:31single play. You have a direct effect on
- 12:34what's going to happen. Basketball to some extent you're
- 12:36calling plays and they run a pick and roll every time, but
- 12:38still you're you're calling some type of player.
- 12:40Baseball, you're really not. I mean, the catcher's call it a
- 12:44game. You go into it, you have a
- 12:46you've got a game plan that ultimately there it goes.
- 12:49And you can steal sometimes and hit and run and work the
- 12:52bullpen. But at the end of the day, the
- 12:53direct impact that you have when the game starts is as minimal
- 12:57for a Major League manager as I think any other major sport.
- 13:00Yeah, KP, like I you've seen obviously the game evolved not
- 13:06only as a player, as somebody that's covered it as a dad,
- 13:11seeing sports in general being like with the way the whole
- 13:17dynamic of college baseball has changed and in good ways and in
- 13:22bad. And you obviously see it from
- 13:25from a different perspective being on both sides of it.
- 13:29Do you think the adjustments of like the portal or NIL has been
- 13:33good for college baseball? I love the exposure now that
- 13:39baseball, the college baseball is getting compared to what it
- 13:41used to be. I mean, there was very few
- 13:44times, thank goodness, in O 5 hockey went on strike so that we
- 13:47could, you know, be on TV and that was great.
- 13:50And it was it was awesome for college baseball.
- 13:53And I think that kind of started to see the interest in and now
- 13:56you're getting all the games on ESPN plus and, and all that and
- 13:59you guys in the SEC Network, AC, all the other stuff.
- 14:02And I think it's great. But do you think it's it's
- 14:05changed being covering the SEC and working with that and ESPN,
- 14:10those NIL and transfer portals? Has it has it changed the whole
- 14:14dynamic of of college baseball and and how does parity change?
- 14:18Is it? Is it better or is it worse?
- 14:21Depends on who you're talking about.
- 14:23Like for the player, I think it's well, for some players,
- 14:26it's better. I mean, if you get an
- 14:28opportunity to go somewhere else, you can make money, then
- 14:30then you know, it's that's that's a good situation to be in
- 14:33when you're 19 years old. Has it helped parity?
- 14:37No. But that being said, you know, I
- 14:40mean, we had Coastal Carolina playing to the final this year.
- 14:45You know, Arkansas, Little Rock had a losing record and took LSU
- 14:49to seven games in regional and Dander beat them.
- 14:51So the game still, I mean, baseball is an incredible
- 14:54equalizer because you can hit it on the barrel 27 times, but if
- 14:59you hit it at somebody 27 times and they catch it, it doesn't
- 15:02matter, you're out. It was it was good exit Vilo,
- 15:06though. It was good.
- 15:06Exit Vilo. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 15:08I mean, it's it's you'd rather have more than less and most
- 15:11things at life. But the I mean, in basketball,
- 15:14if you make a perfect shot, it goes in.
- 15:16In baseball, the only perfect thing offensively is you hit it
- 15:18in the seats. That's it.
- 15:19Other than that, somebody can make a play.
- 15:21So job I, I, I love the college game right now.
- 15:25The other thing I love is, you know, more college guys are
- 15:28getting to the big leagues quicker.
- 15:30The whole idea of you got to wait and you got to go every
- 15:33step. Paul Schemes is the best college
- 15:35pitcher I've ever seen in my life.
- 15:38Strasburg was second. But Schemes is the best I've
- 15:41ever seen. And the fact that the Pirates
- 15:43are like, we need you in the big leagues like right now because
- 15:45you're as good as anyone in the world.
- 15:48I mean, what he spent a year in the minor leagues.
- 15:50Maybe that never used to happen when we were playing.
- 15:52It didn't happen. I mean, if he got there in two
- 15:54years, it was quick. But now it's you could play you
- 15:57go the amount of guys that that go to the big leagues the year
- 16:01after the draft of the last few years has been seven or eight
- 16:03guys. It never used to be that way.
- 16:04So college baseball's in a really good spot.
- 16:07And I think the Major League Baseball is a good indicator of
- 16:09that because they push these college guys to the big league
- 16:12level pretty quick. So you were talking about it
- 16:14earlier a little bit with the Brewers, with the fact that
- 16:16they're doing really well for a small market team.
- 16:18We've heard this debate with like the payroll discrepancies,
- 16:20like we had Corey Hart on the show yesterday.
- 16:22He was talking about maybe he should have a salary.
- 16:24Floor we are, Yes. I love it.
- 16:26Yeah. And see him in a few minutes.
- 16:27Yeah. So he was talking about a salary
- 16:29floor in reference to the Brewers obviously, too.
- 16:32And he also played for the Pirates as well.
- 16:33And he's so mad they weren't spending.
- 16:35And then you have these, you have these people that want a
- 16:37salary cap for more, for more parity.
- 16:39Rob Manfred wants a salary cap. These players are annoyed.
- 16:42What are your thoughts of that whole discrepancy in payroll
- 16:44that you're seeing in baseball? I'd be for a floor, I wouldn't
- 16:48be for a cab. I mean, it depends on what
- 16:50you're looking for. Like, I mean, if you want
- 16:52parity, so take like freedom of choice out of the equation.
- 16:56If you want parity, then you want a salary cap because it
- 17:01limits what somebody who has the ability to spend can go do.
- 17:05I think that sucks in general. Like if you guys have an
- 17:09advertiser that calls you and says I want to pay you 100 grand
- 17:12to be X whatever it is, but somebody put a salary cap on you
- 17:16of 50 grand, that makes no sense.
- 17:19Somebody else wants to pay you 100 grand, take 100 grand.
- 17:23I think that baseball is the same way.
- 17:25Now that being said, I think the luxury tax way that they do it
- 17:28makes a lot of sense. You want to spend more great.
- 17:31You can spend a billion dollars if you want on your on your
- 17:35salary, but at the end of the day, some of that is going to
- 17:38fund back to those that don't have, you know, the yes money or
- 17:42the Nessun money or everything else that goes with it.
- 17:44I think that's fine. That's fair.
- 17:46It still gives you the. Freedom to do whatever the hell
- 17:47you want. But at the end of the day, it
- 17:49does benefit those that are at a disadvantage from a market
- 17:52standpoint. So I actually like the system.
- 17:55I don't like a hard cap. I just to me it just it's kind
- 17:58of UN American. But if you create a different
- 18:01system that says spend all you want, but the more that you
- 18:05spend, some others are going to get some of it.
- 18:07Yeah, I'm fine with. That we are talking to former
- 18:08Brewers pitcher and current ESPN baseball analyst Kyle Peterson.
- 18:12You know, Kyle, this you know, in the beginning segment of our
- 18:15show, we got into Rob Manfred trying or is bringing up maybe a
- 18:20geographic realignment and how he how he rose And obviously
- 18:24Michael Kay came out and, you know, spoke about it.
- 18:27They didn't one liked it, the other one didn't like it.
- 18:30Your thoughts to this thought in hand of Rob Manfred coming out
- 18:35and trying to change the league once again that there might be a
- 18:39geographic realignment? So I didn't see it.
- 18:41Explain it to me quick. Well, so I, I can read off what
- 18:46they're saying, what he wants to do, what, what, what they're
- 18:49saying. And I, I, it's, it's interesting
- 18:51and I'm going to put it up over here so they could see it.
- 18:55Hold on. I, I'm going to bring it up
- 18:56right over here. So what Rob Manford wants to do
- 18:59Hold on. Baseball commissioner Rob
- 19:01Manford discussed the geographic realignment and expansion on
- 19:05ESPN Sunday night Sunday Night Baseball this past weekend.
- 19:09Manford explained that the geographic realignment could
- 19:11help save a lot of wear and tear on players due to travel and
- 19:16also be better for regional markets since teams would rarely
- 19:22start late for the East Coast audience or early for those for
- 19:26the West Coast as well. USA Today's Bob Nightingale
- 19:29reports that Nashville is a city that wants an MLB franchise and
- 19:34also Fox Sports believes that Charlotte and Portland are very
- 19:38good places for baseball organizations for the future.
- 19:41So your thoughts to that? So is the realignment based on
- 19:45what division they're in, or based on the schedule they play?
- 19:48Geographical kind of thing. They want to rearrange it.
- 19:50So like, for example, like the Red Sox, the Phillies, the Mets
- 19:53and Yankees kind of all be in the same division type.
- 19:55I mean, I don't know, I, I was with the Brewers when they went
- 19:59American League to National League and I know the Astros did
- 20:03the same thing. I, I, the AL East is beautiful
- 20:08like the way it is. I know Tampa's a little bit
- 20:10different, but just historically the rest of it I, I, I don't
- 20:14think it's broke. I mean, Jabba, you had to do the
- 20:18cross country thing. I never did and I wasn't there
- 20:20very long, but. I mean, it sucks, but they pay
- 20:23you decent to do it. Like if that's your biggest
- 20:26issue, life ain't bad. To be honest, I, I don't, I
- 20:32think we're trying to fix something and I'll give,
- 20:34honestly, I'll give the commissioner credit for this.
- 20:36They don't sit and not have ideas.
- 20:40You may not like their ideas, but I think the pitch clock
- 20:44makes sense. They've speed the game up.
- 20:47There's more stolen bases. I think it's a good thing.
- 20:49I don't like the got to face three guys thing.
- 20:51I think that's stupid. But so not every idea
- 20:56everybody's going to believe in, but at the end of the day,
- 20:58they're coming up with ideas. Let's think about this.
- 21:00Let's think about this. The way that you explained it.
- 21:03This one to me seems like we're trying to solve for something
- 21:06that doesn't feel that broke. But at the end of the day, I
- 21:10don't know. I think that and it's pretty
- 21:12regionalized now, yeah. I don't know why you have to do
- 21:14it anymore. I don't think they're going to
- 21:16do it. And I think obviously this is a
- 21:18story and there's. We got them headlines, yeah.
- 21:20Of course, because there's nothing else to talk about.
- 21:23There's no basketball, there's no hockey, there's no football.
- 21:26And Little League World Series. Oh, stop you.
- 21:28You think the world wants to talk about the Little League
- 21:31World Series? So the only thing there's the
- 21:37only thing that people are trying to figure out is what to
- 21:39talk about. And the first thing that pops up
- 21:41in the headline is Manfred is trying or is speaking about a
- 21:46geographic realignment, which by the way, makes no sense.
- 21:49I don't think it's going to help the league.
- 21:51I don't think it's going to benefit the league.
- 21:52And how is it going to bring more revenue for the league or
- 21:56money for the players? So why even bring this up?
- 21:58Because it doesn't benefit the league, that's all.
- 22:01I'm saying, yeah, here's what I would say is it's kind of fun
- 22:04playing cards on a plane. And if you're taking plane rides
- 22:07away, then that's less playing cards on the road.
- 22:10That's what I'm saying. Guys will revolt against that
- 22:13just in and of itself. Like, no, we're going to play
- 22:15cards with no, that's fine. We can fly to the West Coast.
- 22:17We can play cards for five hours.
- 22:19That's OK. I agree with you.
- 22:21Yeah, I, that was the and we talked about this earlier and it
- 22:25was, it was a big deal in in O9 talking about that coast to
- 22:30coast. And you always knew if you went
- 22:31coast to coast, you were guaranteed a day off just
- 22:33because the bargaining agreement.
- 22:34But that's when Sosh got pissed because we were getting the
- 22:37extra day so we could, we could literally only start three guys
- 22:40because CC could come back on on normal rest and not have to
- 22:43worry about it. So that, that was kind of the
- 22:45one thing where I, I looked at this realignment or however you
- 22:49want to say that it makes sense, but that that's also time where
- 22:55I know some teams allow families to fly.
- 22:59Ours was you could only fly on the way home, not like 2 this
- 23:02series, which I love because we're trying to get locked in
- 23:05and some, some teams I played for it like there were no
- 23:08families. Like, Hey, we're here to win.
- 23:09Like I, you can see your family when you get home, Like the
- 23:12plane is our plane. So, and that's, that's one thing
- 23:15that people don't get to see, like how important those, those
- 23:18bus rides, the, you know, the plane rides and it's, it's not,
- 23:23it's not something to be taken lightly that people don't.
- 23:25And you know, once you get out of the game, it's those things
- 23:28you miss. You don't miss the grind and all
- 23:29that. It's, you know, the rain delays
- 23:31and, you know, it's the up and downs when you get to the hotel
- 23:35and be like, hey, we're all meeting down here and we're
- 23:36going to whatever steakhouse or whatever.
- 23:39So yeah, it's just I, I don't, I don't think it makes sense.
- 23:45I think the players would, would have a little bit of backlash to
- 23:49it. And in regards to the certain
- 23:51things that come with it, extracurriculars being probably
- 23:56one of them. I mean, let's just call it for
- 23:59what it is. You know, that's, that's a lot
- 24:01of, a lot of flying and doing all that stuff.
- 24:03But yeah, I just, I, I think baseball is, is getting to a
- 24:07good place. I do want to ask, like you
- 24:09mentioned, some of the changes that have been made, are there
- 24:12some you don't like? I mean, because I I'm a baseball
- 24:15purist, I'd I'd like to keep the integrity of the game and what
- 24:18got us here to love the game. Is there is there one
- 24:22specifically that you like better?
- 24:25The pitch clock would not affected me because I wanted to
- 24:27get it and go anyways. I didn't I you know, there's
- 24:30there's some human rain delays and we all know some of those
- 24:32guys. You're like, dude, just throw
- 24:33the ball. Gosh Dang it.
- 24:35Cam just gave up a perfect game in the seven.
- 24:40Yeah, I know right. So, yeah, that didn't bother me.
- 24:43The bases, whatever. A little bit bigger here.
- 24:46I agree with you. Like, think about all the guys
- 24:48situational lefties that made a living just coming in Ron
- 24:52volumes of the world, the Javi Lopez's, you know, those guys
- 24:56lefties just coming in to get guys and that's what they did.
- 25:00And now it's like you got to face 3 and that takes away a
- 25:03little bit of the chess match. And that's changed the.
- 25:05Dynamic. The age thing I'm fine with.
- 25:06I hated hitting anyway. I sucked at it but.
- 25:08Oh yeah, it wasn't fun. I.
- 25:10Get bun. But I couldn't do anything else.
- 25:11That's kind of boring. But the phase three guys thing,
- 25:15I don't know. I just think it, it takes some
- 25:16of the strategy out of it that that I mean, kind of like this
- 25:20realignment thing. I feel like you're trying a
- 25:21little bit too hard. I, I get the speed of that thing
- 25:23and they needed to do that and baseball needs to be at a
- 25:27ideally a three hour or less pace, but I don't If you want to
- 25:30go left, right, left and a guy sets his line up that way and
- 25:33you want to face it that way, I'm I'm totally fine with it.
- 25:36So I want to ask for the Brewers, who do you think is the
- 25:38biggest threat to them in the National League right now and
- 25:41why? I mean, I would say, I would say
- 25:46to Phillies, but I don't I don't know the Wheeler situation.
- 25:49I mean if if they is he done done?
- 25:52Or. Is there a chance 50, not IL,
- 25:54but that they're going to play it out?
- 25:56It could be longer. I, I, I mean, I think that's
- 25:59kind of the, for me, the biggest factor there.
- 26:03And I don't know, I mean, you can't discount the Dodgers just
- 26:06because it's the Dodgers. It is amazing though, that I
- 26:09mean, when you go look at the starting rotation and now you go
- 26:11like 70 for the Dodgers, but then go look at the average
- 26:16distance that their starters go. It's crazy.
- 26:19I mean, it's among the the shortest in the National.
- 26:21League. They're better than the Mets
- 26:22though, because Mets. I can't.
- 26:23Haven't had a guy goes more than six innings for like twice in
- 26:26the last two months. Yeah.
- 26:27Are you a Mets guy? I am, yes.
- 26:28He has. Been I see the city field thing
- 26:31in the background so obviously. It's been a rough go for their
- 26:33pitching. Yeah, you Mets fans are the
- 26:36greatest. I mean, it doesn't matter.
- 26:37You guys could be 104 right now. There'd be something wrong.
- 26:40It is there. There was always something and
- 26:44they can still go on a heater too.
- 26:45But I, I'd probably take the Dodgers first just because they,
- 26:50I mean, from the pure talent standpoint, I think they have
- 26:52more. But I, I don't know the, the
- 26:56Phillies feel like they've got something different, especially
- 26:58if they get Wheeler back. You know, it's so funny you
- 27:01bring up the Mets, but as a Jet fan, I feel the same way as The
- 27:04Jets. The Jets are always the little
- 27:06brother to the Giants and and The Jets have all the talent in
- 27:11the world, but they can never get over the hump because they
- 27:12don't have a quarterback. The Mets, they get Juan Soto,
- 27:15they have Pete Alonso, they got all this this talent on their
- 27:19roster and Francisco Lindor and they fall flat on their face
- 27:23once again at the end of the season.
- 27:24It it's typical New York Fashion.
- 27:26But before we let you go, because I know you're a busy guy
- 27:29there, you brought up Paul Skeens a little while ago.
- 27:33And Paul Skeens has not been very happy over there in
- 27:37Pittsburgh. As a matter of fact, he's told
- 27:40the organization as what we've heard through his agent and some
- 27:45friends that are close to him that he wants to be traded.
- 27:48What do you think? If you were AGM or you were the
- 27:51GM of the Pittsburgh Pirates, what do you think you can get
- 27:55for Paul Skeens and who would you trade him to if it becomes
- 27:59if he becomes available? Well, who I'm not sure, but I
- 28:02would say this, I would make sure that, I mean, it's a hall
- 28:07almost, I mean, it's like a Herschel Walker hall.
- 28:11Like the one that is, is doesn't even really make sense.
- 28:14I he's generational. They've got what, at least three
- 28:20years of control, maybe 4 left. And obviously it's going to get,
- 28:23I mean, he's going to break every arbitration record there
- 28:26is. But that being said, they still
- 28:27have control. I understand it.
- 28:30And if you could look at the numbers, and I know the last
- 28:33month and a half it's been a little bit different, but still,
- 28:35if that's a little bit different down that, that's like one of
- 28:39the greatest ever. But I don't remember the stat.
- 28:42He went out like 10 starts where he had an ERA, had 1 1/2 and he
- 28:45had one win and it was something crazy.
- 28:49So you can understand, I mean, there's just a I'd like to win
- 28:52games component of it. But the other thing is, is, I
- 28:55mean, that's the way the system works.
- 28:57So you can demand a trade, but at the end of the day, they
- 29:00control you for the next three or four years.
- 29:01So they don't necessarily need to do that.
- 29:04I don't know what the pirates are trying to do as an
- 29:07organization anyway. I mean, I don't know if trading
- 29:10schemes are getting four or five guys back and a couple you can't
- 29:13get traffic. But if that ultimately makes it
- 29:17better, at the end of the day, you get to spend and they
- 29:19haven't shown the willingness or the interest to spend.
- 29:22And so you can make any trade you want, but if you don't spend
- 29:26to some extent, unless you're the Rays and, and I guess the
- 29:29Brewers to some extent, it's not going to happen.
- 29:31So I, I get it why he would be want to be somewhere else.
- 29:35He can win right now. But at the end of the day, man,
- 29:38I mean, it's still pretty good to be Paul Skeens.
- 29:41Like life ain't bad to be Paul Skeens.
- 29:44And if you got to hang out in Pittsburgh another three or four
- 29:46years and then somebody gives you $400 million to go somewhere
- 29:50else, that's that's not bad either.
- 29:52It's crazy and that's why I think Paul Skeens is one of the
- 29:55best young pitchers in baseball. But you would have to give up a
- 29:58hole. And we we talk about the big
- 30:00market teams. The Dodgers have a very good
- 30:02farm system. You look at maybe the Braves,
- 30:04one of these organizations that are willing to give away the
- 30:08talent that they have in the farm system.
- 30:09Like the Yankees, they have no talent in their farm system.
- 30:12Who are they willing to give up? Spencer Jones?
- 30:14They're ranked 28th right now. And everybody says, well, the
- 30:17Yankees are a team that Paul Skeens would absolutely be able
- 30:21or enjoy to go to. Yeah, there's a lot of teams
- 30:23that Paul schemes would love to go to You.
- 30:25You got to give up talent and they don't have any.
- 30:27So that's the. Problem the biggest thing for
- 30:29schemes right now, I mean, and Jabba knows this like the
- 30:33control piece is massive for an organization.
- 30:36I mean, if if you've got control of a guy for three years and
- 30:40even ultimately if arbitration is going to cost you a bunch of
- 30:42money, it's going to cost you less than going out and signing
- 30:45a, you know, a picture to A6 or A7 year deal.
- 30:48So if you have control when arbitration allows you to do
- 30:51things over the next three years, there's significantly
- 30:54more value to that than going and getting a guy who has a year
- 30:57left because you got a three-year runway for somebody
- 31:01who is at the, you know, the pinnacle of his career.
- 31:03He started the last two All Star games.
- 31:06I don't know if the market could be any higher for anybody.
- 31:10So if you're the pirates and you really want to restart and do a
- 31:12cheap, probably a good time to start doing it because when he
- 31:15hits arbitration he gets a hell of a lot more expensive.
- 31:19Yeah, and he I mean he's going to set a record.
- 31:21I mean, and you think about it that that six years basically of
- 31:25control. And he's I mean he's going to
- 31:28set records as far as I mean going into free agency, he's
- 31:31probably going to have a cool buck 20 in his pocket 120 and
- 31:35then go get another 400. But at the same time, he he's
- 31:38still going to be able to be under control and he has no say.
- 31:43So having the pirates have the ability, like, sorry, you may
- 31:48not like what we're doing, but there's nothing you can do about
- 31:51it. So I mean, you're going to cry
- 31:55over spilled milk or just go do your job and make more money.
- 31:58Are you going to be pissed about it?
- 31:59And Seoul can be like OK then you go and have a shitty year on
- 32:03your draw year then. Yeah, I mean, I would tell you
- 32:06this and I don't. I mean, I wasn't around him a
- 32:08whole lot, but I was around him some.
- 32:10Like this dude was in the Air Force Academy for two years.
- 32:14He wanted to be a fighter pilot. He wanted to and and I mean
- 32:19everybody that's around him raves about every part of it
- 32:22aside from the fact that he's as good as there is on the field.
- 32:24But what I don't think he's going to do is just say screw
- 32:28you guys and check like he's the DNA doesn't say that.
- 32:32So I think he continues to do what he's going to do.
- 32:35It doesn't mean he's not going to say anything about it.
- 32:36I mean it, you know, if if you were playing for the Pirates
- 32:39right now and you're one of the best players in the game, you'd
- 32:41probably want to play somewhere else.
- 32:43I think that makes sense. But that being said, if, if they
- 32:46take that approach, which I would totally understand if I'm
- 32:49them, I think he still continues to do what he does now.
- 32:53Does it wear on you after 5 or 6 years?
- 32:55Maybe it might like you. You're like, hold on, dude.
- 32:59I keep doing this every five days and we're out of contention
- 33:04like 3 weeks into August. I, I, I, I, I can't do this.
- 33:09And maybe, I don't know, I also think he's built a little bit
- 33:12different than most, which is why I think the market would be
- 33:16even better. I mean, you're getting a, you're
- 33:17getting a freak on him out and I think you're getting a freak
- 33:20athlete with AI mean a fighter pilot mind there's there's not a
- 33:24lot built like that. No, no, Kyle, we really
- 33:27appreciate the time. You're you're working.
- 33:29You're working, man. Now for ESPN.
- 33:31You're analyzing all the different things in baseball, by
- 33:35the way, How did how did you receive?
- 33:38How did you get that job, man? I mean, obviously you're a
- 33:41former baseball player, but now you're working for ESPN, who
- 33:44reached out to you? Where you you're now one of the
- 33:47bigger analysts right now for baseball?
- 33:51I got released. That was the start of it.
- 33:55I wasn't good enough anymore. I got released in 2003 in spring
- 33:58training and my agent was Scott. Boris and I asked Scott.
- 34:02I said, hey, I'd I've always wanted to do TV, do you mind
- 34:05calling ESPN and see if there's an opening?
- 34:07It was the first year they were doing super regionals and they
- 34:10needed bodies, honestly, because they hadn't done it before.
- 34:14So I thought I was going to go do two games.
- 34:17I had a job lined up in Minneapolis to go trade bonds,
- 34:20which I didn't even really know what that meant, and I never
- 34:24started. And that was 23 years ago, so I
- 34:27thought it was going to be two games and they haven't told me
- 34:29to leave yet. 20 years, man, 20 years with ESPN.
- 34:33That's a great story, man, and we really appreciate the time.
- 34:36We'd love to get you on if if the Yankees make the playoffs,
- 34:39which I don't believe they will, but when the playoffs come
- 34:42around, we would love to get you on the show and talk a little
- 34:44playoff baseball with you. Yeah, dude, anytime Java calls,
- 34:47I'm good, man. All right?
- 34:48And you guys, I mean, I feel like we're tight now.
- 34:50Yeah, well, as long as I don't. If we're that tight, give me a
- 34:54job with the ESPN KP. Let's go.
- 34:56But I wear a tank top next time and I got a chance.
- 34:59Obviously my my dress code was not good today so I apologize.
- 35:03Hold on one second. Joba just mentioned ESPN.
- 35:05He said he wouldn't play. He wouldn't work for ESPN.
- 35:08Now he wants a job with ESPN. I don't.
- 35:10Get hey, you'll take a paycheck. Do we not just talk about
- 35:13paycheck? Java.
- 35:17You get Java, the bit with the Nebraska Super Regionals.
- 35:22Well, we have to get, we have to get there first.
- 35:23It's been a struggle. It's been a.
- 35:25Struggle for us, as we always say, as we call them, as we
- 35:29always do. Anyways, we really appreciate
- 35:32you, Kyle. Keep up the good work and we'll
- 35:34talk to you soon, bud. Bye gents, be well.
- 35:37Thanks, KP. Kyle Peterson, ladies and
- 35:39gentlemen, ESPN, 23 years as you heard it by him.
- 35:43And it's, it's pretty interesting his story as a
- 35:45pitcher and, and really what he's done over the last couple
- 35:48of years and become one of the bigger analysts for ESPN and,
- 35:53and he worked with Aaron Boone. So he knows a little bit about
- 35:55Aaron Boone. He gave you his take.
- 35:57He's not blaming Aaron Boone for any of this turbulence for the
- 36:00New York Yankees. And it's, it is turbulence.
- 36:03So if you're a Yankee fan and you want to point your fingers,
- 36:05Kyle Peterson says you shouldn't be pointing your fingers at him.
- 36:09That's all I'm saying. And and again, you got to point
- 36:12your fingers at somebody and it's going to go to the manager.
- 36:14I think it should be to Brian Cashman.
- 36:16Finally, I am not one to blame Brian Cashman for anything, but
- 36:21Brian Cashman is the cause of this destruction of this team.
- 36:24And I think the way he put this team together over this past
- 36:28season is the reason why the Yankees are really not a playoff
- 36:32team and they're a borderline playoff team.
- 36:34He says he's they're four games out by the end of the next week.
- 36:38I think they might be fine five or six games out.
- 36:39They're just not good guys. So as a Yankee fan, you just
- 36:42have to step away and realize that this team is just really
- 36:45bad anyways. Another real question is how big
- 36:48of a party will Jabba throw when that?
- 36:50Happened. Yeah.
- 36:50And that was another thing. Jabba went to the ESPN thing.
- 36:53Wait a second. As soon as he's give me a job
- 36:55with ESPN KP. I went Brian.
- 36:57How was that? I, I, we went from back and
- 37:00forth off air saying I don't know, I'm not working for ESPN,
- 37:04I will never work for ESPN. And then he says, hey, KP, get
- 37:07me a job with ESPN. If I get, if I get to cover the
- 37:10College World Series for ESPN, you you're sure you're sure as
- 37:13shit I'm doing it. Of course, but again, you will
- 37:19talk off air. Make sure I've never said that.
- 37:22I've first of all, you did say that.
- 37:25You said you wouldn't work for ESPN.
- 37:27Did you not say that? I'll work for anybody that'd
- 37:30write the. Paycheck, that's true.
- 37:31I guess you're right about that. Anyways, Speedy 6 pack of the
- 37:35week. Let's have a sixer.
- 37:39Hey, who wants to play Drink the Beer?
- 37:40It's time for the Speedy 6 pack of the week.
- 37:47Well, we do have a little bit of a bonus, bonus 5 beers, thanks
- 37:50thanks to our friend W before we get to my 6 pack as well with
- 37:53some CFL picks this week. He's got Toronto covering plus
- 37:57three at home against the BC Lions.
- 38:00He's got the he's got the Winnipeg Blue Bombers tomorrow
- 38:04covering -4 1/2. They are the favorites on the
- 38:06road against Montreal and they've got he's got Edmonton
- 38:10home favorites -1 1/2 against Ottawa.
- 38:13And he's got some college football as well.
- 38:14He's got Kansas -12 and he's got Iowa State.
- 38:17Plus 3 1/2 in Week 0 of college football.
- 38:20So shout out to Westford giving us some parlay picks for this
- 38:24week. As for my 6 pack, we have a lot
- 38:26of. Football number six.
- 38:28Yes, we're going to have a lot of NFL news, a lot of defensive
- 38:31players. We'll start with the Patriots.
- 38:32They're we talked about them yesterday, trying to trade for a
- 38:34big name player. They're also trying to trade
- 38:36safety Kyle Duggar, who's had some good years, but last year,
- 38:39seventh worst, covers great among safeties, 104.13 passer
- 38:43rating, 14th worst overall, 90 tackles.
- 38:46And after having 90 tackles and multiple interceptions each of
- 38:49the last two years before that, he's going to be included in
- 38:51this kind of trade, like for a big swing or could he trade him
- 38:54somewhere else? You think teams will be
- 38:55interested? Well, Errol, I think is sick
- 39:00right now, but I'll comment on Duggar.
- 39:02Duggar's one of those guys that got a big contract and his play
- 39:05fell off almost immediately. He had like career year,
- 39:09contract year. I love the contract year guys.
- 39:13He just hasn't been that player. They're not going to get a high
- 39:15draft pick for him if they move them.
- 39:17So that if they have to decide is it worth it keeping, you
- 39:20know, maybe an average to below average talent on a big contract
- 39:24or getting nothing for him? They have to decide if they have
- 39:26the depth to move them. I don't know.
- 39:27If they do, I really don't know. Yeah, no, I was thinking the
- 39:33same thing. It's like, if push comes to
- 39:35shove, do you, but do do you really have the depth to be able
- 39:38to do that? And will you pull the trigger?
- 39:39I I don't know if they do, honestly.
- 39:43I think they're going to add something, but I think they're
- 39:45going to go try to where though I I think they want a receiver.
- 39:48I think they want a big, big name receiver.
- 39:51Or if they could somehow, you know, pull like Trey Hendrickson
- 39:55away from the Bengals. They said they're not interested
- 39:57in the price that Cincinnati's offering right now is what I'm
- 39:59hearing. Yeah, I, I don't think so.
- 40:02I but look, it's receiver Errol, you talked about it the other
- 40:05day yesterday that you know, if the Patriots are making a move,
- 40:09if they move Kyle Duggar or anything else, it's probably for
- 40:11a receiver, right? Yes, absolutely.
- 40:13And Terry Mclaurin is the guy that I would believe if, if he
- 40:17bump becomes available by Washington, Washington would
- 40:20definitely look to trade him. He's not getting $30 million as
- 40:23far as I know. And I, I Washington is not going
- 40:26to dip into their pockets after giving Debo Samuel the money
- 40:29that they gave him the new offseason.
- 40:30Well, they traded for him and they're taking on his contract.
- 40:33So I do believe that Terry Mclaurin would be the guy.
- 40:36And I think that's where he goes, if anywhere, he goes to
- 40:40the New England Patriots because they have the most money.
- 40:42All right, speedy #5. Let's go to a former Patriot.
- 40:46Matthew Judon signed on with the Miami Dolphins team team that
- 40:50was 27th last year in sack percentage at 5.77.
- 40:53Obviously the injuries to their two big edge rushers hurting
- 40:55them. Jalen Phillips especially just
- 40:5740, but for Judah just a 43 overall grade last year, ranked
- 41:00194th out of 210 pass rushers last year.
- 41:04Can the Dolphins resurrect this defense again like they did in
- 41:06the second-half of the season? No, I, I, this, this defense is
- 41:11going to be really, really bad this year and I'm interested to
- 41:13see how this offense is going to work.
- 41:15So, and, and you look at McDaniel, I, I think he's on the
- 41:18hot seat. I think the team is in a
- 41:20position right now. They paid to a lot of money and,
- 41:23and you're expecting that he's going to go out there and he's
- 41:25going to stay healthy this year. You know, he's not going to get
- 41:27out of the pocket. You know, he's going to stay in
- 41:29the pocket and try to make every single throw.
- 41:31And that offensive line is if there's a lot of questions with
- 41:33that offensive line to this season, Miami might be one of
- 41:37the worst teams in the AFC this year.
- 41:39And you're going into the season and you're expecting this guy to
- 41:42be resurrected. This defense is really, really
- 41:45bad. I do not believe Miami to is
- 41:48going to be is going to jump from a decent defense to a
- 41:52really bad defense to a another decent defense season.
- 41:55I think they're going to be really, really bad this year
- 41:58from offense to defense. And I think Tua might be knocked
- 42:00out early in the season because that offensive line is
- 42:03absolutely horrible. So.
- 42:07Yeah, look, as far as as far as that team goes, I think McDaniel
- 42:12is a good coach, but I think they've done a bad job with that
- 42:15roster. I look they paid their defensive
- 42:17tackle because who else is there to pay seriously like on that
- 42:22roster? The Jalen Phillips thing is a
- 42:24shame. You know, 2 bad injuries, 2
- 42:25consecutive years he was playing it.
- 42:27I would argue an all pro level when he went down.
- 42:29I, I, I think that's a bit whenever you lose a pass rusher
- 42:32like that, like we're saying, the Bengals are basically
- 42:35shooting themselves in the foot like doing it, it kills your
- 42:37team and they're in a real competitive division.
- 42:39Judon, I always thought was an overrated player though.
- 42:42He's like one of those guys who gets all the sacks, but always
- 42:45it's like he's collecting garbage.
- 42:47He doesn't play the. Wrong.
- 42:48He was good with the Patriots. He thought he had almost years
- 42:51with the Patriots. He was good with a couple of
- 42:52great years, but he was always one of those guys that collected
- 42:55sacks and it wasn't like like sometimes he would be on.
- 42:58JJ Watts. Like and stuff, yeah, it's like
- 43:00garbage points in basketball, yeah.
- 43:03He was more of a compiler against bad team like JJ Watt of
- 43:06a dude hey was JJ Watt. If you look at JJ Watt's career,
- 43:10go look at J Watt was an amazing He could never beat the good
- 43:15offensive lines. You look at JJ Watt's career, go
- 43:18look at his career. Go look at the defense around
- 43:20the line and he was a more versatile player than Judan
- 43:22Judan. I'm, I'm just saying if you look
- 43:24at JJ Watt's career, I'm not saying JJ Watt wasn't a good
- 43:27pass rusher. He's a Hall of Famer.
- 43:29But if you look at his career and you look at the defense, I
- 43:32mean the offensive lines he beats at the top of his game,
- 43:35they were some of the worst offensive lines.
- 43:38He would get 3 sacks or two sacks in a game and then he'd
- 43:41play a good offensive line and not even get 1.
- 43:43So again, if you're going to say that JJ Watts, the same guys
- 43:48like him. You know what I mean?
- 43:49But no one's really scheming for Judon, I think is my point.
- 43:52You know what I mean? Like I don't.
- 43:53Think, I think you're making Judon a lot worse than he is.
- 43:56He he's a, he's a good player. He had a couple of good years
- 44:00and I think those years are beyond him.
- 44:01He's in his 30s. It's it's over.
- 44:03I think speedy number. 4 Let's go to Judon's team last year,
- 44:07the Atlanta Falcons. They lost lose an offensive
- 44:09lineman Caleb Caleb McGarry to a knee injury.
- 44:12Not confirmed out for the season yet, but shouldn't miss a lot of
- 44:14time in Atlanta Offensive line that was 7th overall according
- 44:17to PFF. Third in rushing yards before
- 44:19rushing yards before contact to help out Bichon Robinson and
- 44:2212th and run block win win rate. Can Atlanta find something out
- 44:26level on offense without losing somebody like McGarry, who's
- 44:29been very good for a couple of years now?
- 44:30Yes, I mean, they've Got Talent over there.
- 44:33I would like to see Kyle Pitts. I want to see a little bit more
- 44:36of Kyle Pitts. This guy is one of the best
- 44:38tight ends over the last couple of years being drafted.
- 44:42They they this guy had a great rookie season.
- 44:44He had over 1000 yards. And since his rookie season,
- 44:46he's not putting up the numbers because they're not throwing on
- 44:49the ball. It doesn't matter who the coach
- 44:51is. They've had problems giving a
- 44:54guy like Kyle Pitts the opportunity to to flourish as a
- 44:56player. If if that was the case, you
- 44:58should have traded in to the Cowboys a couple of years ago.
- 45:01It would have made more sense to trade him away to a team that's
- 45:04going to use him to and use his strengths.
- 45:06I think Kyle Pitts definitely needs to be a guy that they use
- 45:09in this offense a lot more. And if if they value their
- 45:13season and expect this season to be a playoff season, you you get
- 45:16you get your best players involved.
- 45:22I agree. Listen, Speedy, if you're just
- 45:25going to talk about the offensive line, don't forget
- 45:27that they have the best guard in football and Chris Lindstrom on
- 45:30their line. Jake Matthews no slouch as a
- 45:32left tackle either. He's a good, he's a good, not
- 45:34great player. So can they recover from losing
- 45:37McGarry, who's probably better than Matthews on the other side
- 45:39of the line? It it depends.
- 45:41I think Pennix being a little bit more mobile then Kirk
- 45:44Cousins will help as well with that.
- 45:46And look, it, it, it's only a problem to me because Pennix is
- 45:50a lefty and McGarry is the blind side for a left-handed
- 45:55quarterback. So if they they may need to move
- 45:58Matthews to the right side or really hope that they have a
- 46:02good enough right tackle to put there.
- 46:03That's the only thing that worries me.
- 46:05But it look, it's it's still early.
- 46:08He's it's not official that he's going to be out of a long, long
- 46:10time McGarry. So let's see what?
- 46:11Happens double up on #3 double up on your tight ends too.
- 46:15That's what I would think. If you're having problems on
- 46:17your offensive line and you're losing players, play with two,
- 46:20two tight ends. One, that's a yeah, dude,
- 46:23something of that magnitude. I, I mean, that's the problem
- 46:27with Raheem Morris. Raheem Morris over the years has
- 46:30made terrible mistakes as a coach.
- 46:33And that's, and I don't even know how he got another job.
- 46:35I, I didn't, I disagree with them.
- 46:37They should have hired Bill Belichick.
- 46:38Well, Belichick wasn't good enough, so they had to go to
- 46:40Yeah, that's what it. Was remember all right?
- 46:44There you go, speedy, next one. All right, so for one good
- 46:47offensive line to a terrible offensive line, the Cincinnati
- 46:49Bengals lose their guard Cordell Bolson for the season, who was
- 46:52their best rated offensive lineman last year.
- 46:54He was still 83rd among 125 guards.
- 46:56You talk about the concern with their defense yesterday, any
- 46:59concern for this offensive line. Go ahead for Joe Burrow.
- 47:03What we were going on, these offensive line situations.
- 47:07I guess he just wants to have me talk because I just love talking
- 47:10offensive line. The Bengals did something a
- 47:12couple of years ago that was weird.
- 47:15They decided to get three guys that weighed like 1000 lbs
- 47:19combined to play on their offensive line and it didn't
- 47:22work because you can't have that.
- 47:24You need to have guys that are more dynamic athletically and
- 47:27they wanted to be like a power run team and Joe Burrow will be
- 47:31able to make up for it. Well, if you lose, you know the
- 47:33inside of the pocket, we know what's going to happen.
- 47:36They're going to be behind because their defense is bad.
- 47:39They're going to have to throw a whole lot.
- 47:41And Joe Burrow, if he gets hurt, we already saw what that season
- 47:45looks like when you have Browning or whoever it is in
- 47:47there. Even though they got great
- 47:49receivers, if you can't get pass protect long enough for them to
- 47:52run more than 10 yards down the field, you don't need a
- 47:55receiver. And who's their and who's their
- 47:57number one running back, Brown? I mean, they don't have a #1
- 48:01running back. Brown was good last year.
- 48:02But he's not a one. Between the tax.
- 48:05He's not a one, He's a he's a 2. He's a powerhouse back that
- 48:08could go North and South. He's not really an East West guy
- 48:12that I'm the. Best thing about Brown is his
- 48:14receiving, right? That's not my.
- 48:15My them I get a run like a like a like if they could get like.
- 48:19You invest into two wide receivers, you have no pass
- 48:23rush. If if Trey Hendrickson leaves
- 48:25and you're you're have all these problems on the offensive line,
- 48:28where are you scoring? How are you going to score?
- 48:30You're going to be 1 dimensional.
- 48:32Teams are going to know you're 1 dimensional and what are they
- 48:34going to do? They're going to double team on
- 48:36your two star wide receivers and you're going to try to make the
- 48:38other guys beat you and, and teams are going to figure that
- 48:41out. And then Joe Burrow is going to
- 48:43be put in harm's way. He's going to get knocked the
- 48:44hell out. That's what's going to happen.
- 48:46I think it's a terrible, terrible move what they're doing
- 48:49to Trey Hendrickson and the problems that they have no
- 48:52backup players, they have no depth to that offensive line.
- 48:56That's the big problem. And as a New York Jet fan, we
- 48:58all know about depth. Over the last couple years, The
- 49:01Jets have lost more offensive lineman in a season than any
- 49:04team in football in the last five years.
- 49:06And I can tell you it doesn't bode well when you lose
- 49:08offensive lineman. They could have got three good
- 49:11lineman for the price of T Higgins.
- 49:13You got to you got to remember that I I think that was a huge
- 49:15mistake by them. Speedy.
- 49:16What are we up to two? Yep.
- 49:19Go ahead. The next one would be Ladarius
- 49:21Sneed, who looks like he's going to be able to play.
- 49:24He played only five games last year at a really bad year 91.8
- 49:27pass the reading aloud and got a big contract.
- 49:28I think it was the biggest in the league before Sir Tan got
- 49:30paid. So can he bounce back to the
- 49:32form with the with the Chiefs? You're talking about the Titans
- 49:34offense yesterday, the defense, they were good at the beginning
- 49:36of the season and all of a sudden fell off.
- 49:40Are we really going into the Sneed conversation?
- 49:45My God, I'm not even going to speak about this.
- 49:48Why are we even talking about the Kansas City Chiefs?
- 49:51Are we really? On the Titans, he's on the
- 49:53Titans. You brought up the Kansas City
- 49:55Chiefs, the Titans Sock. As we heard about Shanahan,
- 49:59Shanahan's on the hot seat. Does it really matter if Sneed
- 50:02is making the kind of money that he's making or what position
- 50:05he's going to be playing on? The Titans?
- 50:07The Titans defense was good last year.
- 50:08They're going to be good this year.
- 50:10It doesn't really matter because they're coaches on the hot seat
- 50:13and they're in a division right now that sucks, but they're also
- 50:17playing. They they got to deal with teams
- 50:19like Houston and CJ Strout 2 games in a season.
- 50:22They're not going to be good. Tennessee's not making the
- 50:24playoffs. They're going to be looking for
- 50:25a new coach. Who cares about Sneed.
- 50:27It doesn't matter if he's playing for Kansas City.
- 50:29It doesn't matter how much money he's making.
- 50:30It doesn't matter if he stays healthy or not.
- 50:32Tennessee is going to lose this year.
- 50:35I don't know why we're bringing this up.
- 50:36Next question. I, I think Sneed's a good
- 50:40player. I, I just think he's had been
- 50:42hurt and it was a bone bruise this time.
- 50:45It might not be anything that serious, but you're right,
- 50:48Speedy, he was down after getting paid.
- 50:50A lot of guys contract a year, no play out of their mind.
- 50:54And then, you know, they let up after that and that was Sneed.
- 50:56Let's see if he comes back with anything Speedy.
- 50:59Number one. Round it out with the New York
- 51:01Jets. They need two moves for
- 51:03defensive tackles today. A big need for them.
- 51:04They wanted to draft one, didn't get one.
- 51:06They trade for Harrison Phillips, the longtime Buffalo
- 51:08Bill, They got him from the Vikings, who was first and
- 51:10assisted tackles, 1 defensive tackles last year.
- 51:13And they also get Jay Tafeli, a big guy from the Cincinnati
- 51:15Bengals, A one year deal with The Jets.
- 51:17Jets needs to help and run defense.
- 51:19Do they get it here? Phillips is good.
- 51:21We'll see if he can stay healthy.
- 51:22They needed defensive tackle help.
- 51:25The Jets have a quality of defensive lineman on this
- 51:28roster. The problem is they had no nose
- 51:31tackle or defensive tackles for backups.
- 51:33Phillips will be used a little bit with Quinton Williams.
- 51:35Quinton Williams is going to be your every down kind of nose
- 51:39tackle, defensive tackle. But Phillips is a good player.
- 51:42He's a good addition. The other kid is he's he's half
- 51:46decent. I, I, I don't know why we're
- 51:47bringing. Phillips was the name.
- 51:49That's the guy that The Jets brought in from the Vikings.
- 51:51He's had, he's been up and down in his career, but when he's on,
- 51:54he's on. So with the moves that they
- 51:57made, they only give up, what, 26 rounds?
- 51:59Yeah, they're not. They didn't give up much.
- 52:02We'll see how it all works. And Phillips has to stay
- 52:04healthy, which he's had problems over the last couple of years.
- 52:07I think they want to have like a NASCAR package for pass rushing,
- 52:11putting like Jermaine Johnson inside, you know, so that they
- 52:13just need like a first, second down guy like Phillips to stuff
- 52:17the middle. They just don't have a lot of
- 52:19depth there. It's kind of curious that they
- 52:21waited this long to get it. Look, you can get those tackles
- 52:25in the fifth, fourth round. I mean, famously Snacks Harrison
- 52:27was a fifth round pick for The Jets and he.
- 52:30Fine. For them, so it's not like you
- 52:33can't find guys like that. I think they found a good one
- 52:35for less than the value they would have to have paid for him
- 52:38in the draft. So it's a good move.
- 52:39Jets. Everything's been pretty smart
- 52:42from The Jets, man. It's been pretty smart.
- 52:44It's all about coaching and Aaron Glenn looks like he knows
- 52:47what he's doing, at least half what he's doing.
- 52:50We know Bambi didn't know what he was doing and now he's going
- 52:52to have to deal with the San Francisco crap.
- 52:55As we know they're in the tabloids every single week.
- 52:58I, I see more things about San Francisco over the last couple
- 53:02weeks as than I've seen in the last 3-4 months, 3-4 years.
- 53:07So I, I mean, I don't know what's going on with San
- 53:09Francisco, but you know, they're that Kyle Shanahan's on the hot
- 53:12seat. And I don't even know if John
- 53:14Lynch is going to keep his job at the end of this year.
- 53:16He can go back to the booth. He was a very good broadcaster.
- 53:20He was one of the best for Fox. I think that's where he heads
- 53:23back to. Maybe you put him with, I don't
- 53:25know, you put him with who? Who?
- 53:27Who he was with? But maybe you don't put him with
- 53:30Burkhart. Maybe you put him with somebody
- 53:31else. Maybe you add him.
- 53:34What? What combination is Burkhart the
- 53:36number one guy right now for? Fox with Brady right now, which
- 53:39anything's better than what Brady?
- 53:40You're not, Brady's not going anywhere.
- 53:42So, so you would have to find somebody that you can work with
- 53:46him. Maybe you send him to CBS, maybe
- 53:48he works with Eye and Eagle. That would be nice.
- 53:50That would be interesting because I don't I I didn't
- 53:53really like the Mark Sanchez combination.
- 53:55That was absolutely horrific. Mark Sanchez doing college
- 53:57football is pretty bad so. Dude, I don't know what CBS is
- 54:01thinking right now and I like Mark Sanchez as a person.
- 54:04He seems like a pretty cool collective guy.
- 54:06I know Jabba knows him, but him as a broadcaster or play by play
- 54:10guy, I don't want to hear what Mark Sanchez has to say.
- 54:13We all know about what he did as a as a football player, as the
- 54:17butt fumbling captain of the New York Jets.
- 54:19I could care less what Mark Sanchez has to say when it comes
- 54:24to play by play like Iron Eagle. He's my he's my guy.
- 54:26I follow him. He's he's a good friend of mine.
- 54:29He's my mentor, one of my mentors.
- 54:31I love everything about Iron Eagle.
- 54:33But when you see him sitting next to Mark Sanchez and we're
- 54:36talking Jets football, that to me is completely ridiculous.
- 54:40So CBS needs to figure out what they're doing over there on that
- 54:43side. So I anyways, we have a new
- 54:46segment. This is the second week we're
- 54:48doing it. We call this in like Flynn.
- 54:51My lady, I've often heard that you'd give me a warm welcome if
- 54:53ever we met again in like, flan flan.
- 55:01Flan All right, my in like Flynn of the week is really the
- 55:05Netflix America's Team, The Gambler and the Cowboys.
- 55:09I don't know if anybody's checked it out, but it is
- 55:11sensational. The documentary is, I think if
- 55:14I'm not mistaken, 8, 8 is 8 episode documentary.
- 55:20I'm, I don't know the number, it's 8, but the first it's so
- 55:24interesting because you got a chance to see how Jerry Jones
- 55:27bought the team, the oil rig and, and making getting the $100
- 55:31million from the oil oil rig. And he went out there and he
- 55:35pretty much said that he was, you know, taking money from
- 55:38banks, fifties, 10s of millions of dollars, owing so much money.
- 55:43And then finally hits, she strikes gold with, with the oil,
- 55:47takes the $100 million and then and buys the, the, the Cowboys.
- 55:51But also lost $300,000 in a coin flip, which which was so friggin
- 55:56ridiculous. And he went out there and says,
- 55:58hey, $300,000 turns into billions and billions of
- 56:02dollars. And then you look at the story
- 56:04behind it and really how he hired Jimmie Johnson, how he
- 56:08decided to fire a Hall of Fame coach and one of the greatest
- 56:11coaches of all time in Landry. And then in going back to going
- 56:15to his Mexican restaurant not realizing that Mexican
- 56:18restaurant was Tom Landry's favorite place to eat.
- 56:21I mean it is crazy story. And then the whole beef between
- 56:24him and Jimmie Johnson and figuring out who who was
- 56:28involved or who was behind the whole Herschel Walker trade,
- 56:31which changed the the factor of the Cowboys future as they got
- 56:35five players for Herschel Walker.
- 56:37And then then they winded up getting rid of those players in
- 56:40the first year and getting all draft picks, which practically
- 56:42built this team from scratch. And then looking at Michael
- 56:46Irvin, the problems that Michael Irvin had at the tail end of his
- 56:48career, which affected their franchise and affected that that
- 56:53run that they had the three Super Bowls that they wanted in
- 56:56four years. It's an incredible story.
- 56:58And and again, going back to what I said in the beginning of
- 57:01the show and the beginning, beginning of our segments of our
- 57:04show is telling you what what a guy like Jerry Jones done for
- 57:09football. Jerry Jones is the mastermind
- 57:11behind the sponsorships in advertisements.
- 57:15Yes, he had a problem with the NFL, which you, you learn in
- 57:18that story, in that unbelievable documentary, is that the NFL was
- 57:22suing him. And he pretty much told the NFL,
- 57:24you sue me and I dropped the hammer on you.
- 57:26You're gonna pay, you're gonna pay $500 million.
- 57:29You're gonna owe me for all the stuff that you're suing me for.
- 57:32I think that Jerry Jones is a mastermind.
- 57:34He was behind all the great things that the NFL has done
- 57:37over the last couple of years. When Jerry Jones dies, when
- 57:40Jerry Jones walks away from football, whatever happens to
- 57:43Jerry Jones in the future, people are going to realize that
- 57:46Jerry Jones was everything to the NFL.
- 57:49He was the behind the scenes guy that stood for the sponsorships
- 57:53in the the advertisements that were being brought in.
- 57:55And by the way, he used the Nike sponsorship to make that move to
- 58:00bring in Deion Sanders and help them win their final Super Bowl.
- 58:03It is an incredible story. And if you guys never got a
- 58:06chance to see it or I, I got a chance to watch it in two days.
- 58:10It's it's 8, like I said, it's 8 episodes.
- 58:13It's about the, there's two episodes that I think we're over
- 58:16an hour, but mainly they're 40 to 45 minutes to 50 minutes
- 58:20every single episode. It is sensational, everything
- 58:22about it. And, and, and to me, it really
- 58:25changed my way of looking at the Dallas Cowboys.
- 58:28And it should as, as a Cowboy hater, you call it America's
- 58:32pastime or America's team. It's very intriguing to see
- 58:35Coward and all these different guys that were interviewed
- 58:38throughout the years and who played the Cowboys and didn't
- 58:41understand how great or how important those Cowboys teams
- 58:45were in the 90s and what those Cowboys teams did to change
- 58:49football to now. So it is an interesting story.
- 58:53Check it out. It's two thumbs up, baby.
- 58:56Two thumbs up. I'll definitely, I'll definitely
- 58:58watch it again. It's going to take a little
- 59:01while because I'm watching all these different documentaries,
- 59:02but it is a sensational, sensational documentary.
- 59:06America's Team, the gambler and his Cowboys.
- 59:09So it is, it's interesting, very, very interesting.
- 59:13If you're not a Cowboys fan, you still should watch it.
- 59:16If you're a football fan, football enthusiast, that's
- 59:19something you definitely got to check out.
- 59:21I want to apologize to all the fans in the beginning of the
- 59:23show with my Vertigo situation. That usually never happens.
- 59:27It's it hasn't happened on the show really for 13 years.
- 59:31It's never happened to me before.
- 59:33I it got worse probably two years ago.
- 59:35There are days than others that I get it, but I don't throw up
- 59:40like that. I, I, my face, fucking excuse my
- 59:42language turned purple. I went to the bathroom.
- 59:45I, I did what I had to do I, I don't, I don't even think I was
- 59:48going to get through the show. So I want to apologize to the
- 59:50fans with that. But All in all, we got through
- 59:52the show. I don't know how I did it, but
- 59:54thank you to all the fans. Thank you to our very special
- 59:58guest, Mr. Kyle Peterson, ESPN baseball analyst.
- 1:00:00Thank you to him. Thank you to all the fans
- 1:00:03following us on Spotify and Apple.
- 1:00:04Keep following us. YouTube, Twitter, or X, whatever
- 1:00:07you call it, TikTok, Instagram, all of them.
- 1:00:11Thank you to all the fans for continuing continuously.
- 1:00:14Keep following us and we'll be back on Monday.
- 1:00:18It has been one hell of a week dealing with the cable
- 1:00:22situation. Excuse me?
- 1:00:24The cable situation on Monday, but that won't happen next week.
- 1:00:28Thank God there is hurricanes going on.
- 1:00:31Hurricane Aaron is hitting hitting everything right now and
- 1:00:35and it's just absolutely demolishing everything that it
- 1:00:38hits. So hopefully all the families
- 1:00:40out there that are dealing with the situations with the
- 1:00:43hurricane, hopefully everybody's taking taking cover and taking
- 1:00:46care of their families. So that's a horrible story right
- 1:00:49now that's going on right now here in the United States.
- 1:00:51So hopefully all the families are are being taken care of.
- 1:00:56Yeah. Do we have anything on Monday?
- 1:00:57Yes, Nathan was able to get Lindsay Berra, who's a Yogi
- 1:01:01Berra granddaughter, and he's a board member.
- 1:01:03She's a board member on the Yogi Berra Museum now.
- 1:01:06I did a lot of Yankees content in the past with espnandmlb.com
- 1:01:10and was the executive producer as well of a documentary called
- 1:01:13It Ain't Over about Yogi Berra. I actually watched it.
- 1:01:16It's a great documentary of Yogi Berra and she was actually on
- 1:01:20it. It was sensational.
- 1:01:21Anybody that hasn't checked it, It was in the movie theater.
- 1:01:24It was in the movie theater for like a couple of weeks, but now
- 1:01:27you can get it. It was on Netflix.
- 1:01:28I think you can get it on Netflix right now.
- 1:01:30It's still on Netflix. If you haven't checked it out.
- 1:01:32It is a great documentary. The the tale of one man that
- 1:01:36just absolutely dominated the catching position, not only for
- 1:01:39the New York Yankees, but the MLB and baseball.
- 1:01:42He is really the face of the catching position.
- 1:01:46I don't care what anybody says. He was the all around greatest
- 1:01:49catcher to ever play the game, power wise, defence wise and
- 1:01:53winning as far as I'm concerned. And and the story behind him on
- 1:01:57how he became a Yankee is pretty unique.
- 1:01:59He wanted, always wanted, to be a Saint Louis Cardinal, and the
- 1:02:02Cardinals passed him up, and then he winded up being picked.
- 1:02:05Up from Saint Louis. And he the Cardinals passed him
- 1:02:08up for, I think. McCarver.
- 1:02:10McCarver, and I don't know if it was McCarver, but it was
- 1:02:13somebody and he, he signed with the New York Yankees and you
- 1:02:17know what happened after that, so.
- 1:02:19And he served his country. Yes, he did.
- 1:02:21And Yogi Berra is a special. I never met him.
- 1:02:24I know Jabba's met him. I'm sure Nick has met him.
- 1:02:26I never got a chance to meet Yogi Berra.
- 1:02:27I met Mickey Mantle. I did, so that was a unique
- 1:02:32opportunity that I had. I also met Pete Rose, so 2 Hall
- 1:02:36of Famous, two of the greatest players to ever play the game.
- 1:02:38I met Derek Jeter and all those guys too anyways, and Java
- 1:02:40played with them and so did Nick, so that's.
- 1:02:42It So I know Lindsay, I talked to her too.
- 1:02:46There's some cool things that she's gonna do and we'll post it
- 1:02:48or whatever, but, and we can cut this and put it up, but yeah,
- 1:02:52they're trying to break the record on September 21st for the
- 1:02:55most people to ever play catch, you have to play catch for 5
- 1:02:58minutes simultaneously. They're doing it at the museum.
- 1:03:00We'll have more information, but if you guys want to go and check
- 1:03:04it out and kind of what they're doing, it is Yogi's big
- 1:03:07catch.org and it'll give you all the information.
- 1:03:10You can be a fan. Come watch it.
- 1:03:13But yeah, really cool thing. And she'll explain some more to
- 1:03:15us on Monday. But it's a really cool thing and
- 1:03:17she is so passionate, such a wonderful, wonderful human
- 1:03:20being, and she's really cool. So that would be fun.
- 1:03:23Yeah, sounds really cool. And again, if you're a Yogi
- 1:03:26Berra fan and you know nothing about Yogi Berra and your father
- 1:03:29used or your grandfather used to tell you about Yogi, well, you
- 1:03:33get a chance to know a little bit more about his family and
- 1:03:35his background when Lindsay comes on and joins us on Monday.
- 1:03:39OK, that's it, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:03:41Again, I hope everybody enjoyed the show and we'll be back next
- 1:03:44week. Goodnight.
- 1:03:45It is the worldwide sports radio network.
