- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Well, welcome to you this morning.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Today as we gather here in the valley,
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: the corn I can see is about the height of a baby rabbit's back.
- 0:14The heads on the winter wheat are forming and there are puddles
- 0:20in the fields.
- 0:22So I am thankful and grateful and excited about the earthly
- 0:26harvest that is coming.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Today we are going to be talking about her again.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: That's right, the Holy Spirit.
- 0:38We're going to be looking at how in numbers the Holy Spirit
- 0:42empowers and fills the 70.
- 0:45We're going to be looking at how that same Holy Spirit on the
- 0:48day of Pentecost
- 0:50fills everyone in the house and we are going to be looking at
- 0:54how in 1 Corinthians
- 0:56the Corinthian church is empowered by the Holy Spirit and given
- 1:01gifts to perform
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: and to continue the work of Jesus Christ.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Now you might be thinking
- 1:08is Harry either crazy or very excited this morning well let me
- 1:12tell you I am
- 1:13excited perhaps it is all of the drugs that I am on I have a
- 1:18sinus infection okay
- 1:20so I'm on antibiotics I've got Advil in me I just took a hint
- 1:26of Dayquil and I'm on
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: a thousand milligrams of vitamin C
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: But I am told that the only thing that is contagious in me today,
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: don't worry,
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: is my excitement about faith.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: The excitement about Jesus Christ,
- 1:42the empowerment of the Holy Spirit here as we celebrate on the
- 1:45day of Pentecost.
- 1:46and God the Father who looks over us and brings not only
- 1:51earthly harvest but
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: eternal harvest in our midst.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: So, I welcome you.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: I'm excited this morning.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Let's pray.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: God of the harvest, we thank you.
- 2:01There is a moment in the wilderness when Moses does something
- 2:03remarkable.
- 2:33not the parting of the Red Sea not the giving of the law not
- 2:39smacking a rock and
- 2:40making water come out of it and this moment as John said is
- 2:46often missed but it is
- 2:49in some ways more impactful than any of those other things in
- 2:56this story Moses
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: shares power
- 3:03He has been wearing himself down with all the weight and the
- 3:08complaining of the
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: people of Israel.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: His father-in-law Jethro, earlier on in the story, had told him that
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: what he was doing was just not sustainable.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: So in this story,
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: God instructs Moses to gather 70 elders,
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: people with recognized standing in the community,
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: and then bring them to the tent of the meeting,
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: which was where the presence of God dwelled.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: There,
- 3:42God would take a portion of the Spirit already resting on Moses
- 3:47and distribute it among the 70.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: 68 of the 70 show up.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Two men, Eldad and Medad, the two dads, let's call them,
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: whose name means beloved, stayed behind in the camp.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And this is where the story gets interesting.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: When the spirit falls on the 68 gathered at the tent, they prophesy.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Let's just pause a moment.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: What does that actually mean?
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: when the Bible uses the word prophesy in moments like this,
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: it does not mean that they started predicting the future.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Prophecy in the Hebrew tradition is better understood as foretelling,
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: speaking the truth of God into a present moment.
- 4:56They were given the Spirit and they spoke the truth of God for
- 5:03that moment.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Now, we don't know what they said, interestingly enough.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: The narrator doesn't tell us.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: And what they said, apparently, is not important.
- 5:19But what seems to be important is that back in the camp,
- 5:24something unexpected is happening.
- 5:28Eldad and Medad,
- 5:30the two dads who never made it to the tent,
- 5:33are prophesying too.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Out in the open,
- 5:37among the tents and the cooking fires and the everyday noise of
- 5:41the community,
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: the Spirit found them where they were.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: So, a young man, seeing what's happening, runs and tells Moses.
- 5:53And Joshua,
- 5:55Moses' right-hand man,
- 5:58hears the report and immediately says,
- 6:01Moses,
- 6:02stop them!
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Now, Joseph's response makes a certain kind of institutional sense.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: He is invested in Moses.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: He has invested in this process.
- 6:22Moses used it to select the 70 and he understands that
- 6:27structures of authority
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: depend on people honoring those structures.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: If Eldad and Maedad can receive the Spirit without showing up,
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: without going through the proper channels,
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: without being in the right place at the right time,
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: then what does that mean to be chosen?
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: What are the boundaries for?
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not trying to make out Joshua as the villain here.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: He's just a loyalist.
- 7:04He loves Moses and he loves the order that Moses is bringing to
- 7:10the people of God
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: that kind of need it at that time.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: His concern is legitimate, but it is also limited.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Moses sees something that Joshua cannot see yet.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: His response is one of the most
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Stunning things anyone says in the entire Torah.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Are you jealous for my sake?
- 7:40Would that all the Lord's people were prophets and that the
- 7:46Lord would put his spirit on them.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Moses is not threatened.
- 7:54He is not worried about his position or his authority or the
- 8:00integrity of the
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: system that he has built.
- 8:03He looks at Eldad and Medad prophesying in the camp and his
- 8:09first feeling is not
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: anxiety,
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: it is delight.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: He wants more of this, not less.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: He wants it for everyone.
- 8:23We need to ask ourselves,
- 8:25what does it take to become this kind of leader?
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: The kind of church who can feel that way?
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: What kind of security,
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: what kind of identity,
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: what kind of trust in God does it require to say genuinely,
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: I wish everyone could do what I,
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: we do.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: to experience the fullness of God that I, we do.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Would it be that everyone experiences that?
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 9:06fast forward several hundred thousands of years and the
- 9:11disciples of Jesus are
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: gathered in Jerusalem.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: It is Pentecost.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: 50 days after the Passover when everything changed.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Jesus died, was resurrected, and was lifted up into heaven.
- 9:28And they are waiting as Jesus had told them to wait for
- 9:33something that they could
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: not fully imagine yet.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: And then it happens in Acts chapter 2.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: When
- 9:45the spirit formerly concentrated in one person Moses and then
- 9:51distributed and
- 9:52portioned out to the 70 now it is she is poured out without
- 9:58measure on everyone in
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: the room men and women young and old slave and
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: And they begin to speak each in a language that is not their own,
- 10:15that they never learned languages of people from every corner
- 10:20of the known world.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: And the crowd outside is bewildered.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Some of them are mocking.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Boy, these folks are drunk, someone says.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: It is nine in the morning.
- 10:40Peter stands up and gives them the answer for what they are
- 10:44seeing and experiencing.
- 10:47He reaches back all the way to the prophet Joel who said in the
- 10:53last days it will
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: be,
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: God declares,
- 10:57that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and
- 11:04your daughters
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: shall prophesy and your young men shall see
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Visions and your old men will dream dreams.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Even upon my slaves,
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: both men and women,
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: in those days I will pour out my spirit and they shall prophesy.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Moses' wish is coming true at scale.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Every boundary the spirit was expected to respect was dissolved.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Not just 70 elders,
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: not just recognized leaders with social standing are getting the spirit,
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: but sons and daughters,
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: old and young,
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: slave and free.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: The people at the absolute bottom of the social order,
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: people who owned nothing,
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: controlled nothing,
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: had access to nothing,
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: are included in the outpouring.
- 12:04And what do the people in the crowd say when they hear these
- 12:07unlearned Galileans
- 12:10speaking in languages of Parthenians and Medes and Allemites in
- 12:15the residence of
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Mesopotamia?
- 12:19In our own language we hear them speaking about God's deeds of
- 12:24power,
- 12:25they say.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: That is the definition of prophecy.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Speaking the truth of God's power into the present moment.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Not predicting the future.
- 12:41Speaking what is real and alive and true about God into the
- 12:46ears of people who need
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: to hear it in a language that they can understand.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Pentecost is glorious.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: What comes after Pentecost?
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: It gets complicated.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: We see that in 1 Corinthians chapter 12.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: The community at Corinth forms in the wake of Pentecost.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: And it is a community overflowing with faith,
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: overflowing with the Spirit,
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: overflowing with gifts,
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: wisdom,
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: knowledge,
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: faith.
- 13:29healings,
- 13:30miracles,
- 13:31prophecy,
- 13:31discernment,
- 13:32tongues,
- 13:33and the interpretation of tongues.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: The Spirit has been extraordinarily generous among them.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And the Corinthians, they've turned it into a competition.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: They are ranking the gifts,
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: treating the more dramatic ones as evidence of superior spiritual status.
- 13:57The people with flashier gifts are looking down on the people
- 14:01with the quieter ones.
- 14:04So Paul is writing this community that is fracturing because of
- 14:10all of this over
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: the gifts and he says these gifts need to be for building you up.
- 14:18His answer is not to restrict the gifts or to question whether
- 14:24they are real.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: His answer is to reframe the entire experience and enterprise.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: He says the same spirit is given to all.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: No gift is for self-display.
- 14:43Every gift is for building up of the body,
- 14:47and the body needs all of its parts.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: There is no hierarchy here, only interdependence.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: And the Corinthians had Moses' abundance,
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: yes,
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: but they also had Joshua's competitive anxiety at the same time.
- 15:11They had the gifts and they were using them to sort themselves
- 15:16out into winners and losers.
- 15:20Paul is trying to give them Moses' eyes to see what really
- 15:28needs to be happening here.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Let's look at the pattern across these three texts for a moment.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: In every one of them, the spirit shows up where she was not expected.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: In people who were not supposed to be the ones,
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: the two dads who stayed in the camp,
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: the unschooled Galileans speaking languages that they had never studied,
- 15:57the sons and the daughters and the slaves and the foreigners
- 16:00who were supposed to
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: be outside of the circle.
- 16:05And in every case the community has to figure out how to
- 16:09respond to this incredible
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: feeling and empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: And the responses cluster into a few types.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: There is the Joshua response.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Make them stop.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: They did it, earn it.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: They didn't follow the rules.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: They didn't follow the process.
- 16:39There is the Jerusalem crowd response,
- 16:42confusion,
- 16:44bewilderment,
- 16:45and for some,
- 16:47ridicule.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: They must be drunk.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: They're crazy people.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: There is the Corinthian response, pride and competition.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: I have the gifts that matter.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: My manifestation of the Spirit is more impressive than yours.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Watch what I can do.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: And there is the Moses response.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: Would that all the Lord's people were prophets.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: More of this.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Please.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Here's the calling then for us.
- 17:29The church can give off the vibe without quite ever saying it
- 17:36that the spirit stays
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: inside our walls,
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: honors our processes,
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: works through our approved channels,
- 17:48and doesn't show up at people who don't participate in our
- 17:53particular ways of
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: gathering or believing.
- 17:59So the question for us today is not whether the spirit is being
- 18:03poured out.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: The spirit is being poured out all across the world, I assure you.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: The question is,
- 18:15what kind of people are we going to be when we encounter her
- 18:22outside of our
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: expected places?
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Are we going to be Joshua,
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: anxious about the boundaries,
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: worried that if the Spirit moves too freely,
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: the whole system will come tumbling down?
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Are we going to be the crowd,
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: the bewildered crowd,
- 18:43just sort of standing outside the door and able to make sense
- 18:47of what we're seeing
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: and defaulting to dismissal?
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: They're just drunk.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: They're just crazy.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: That's not God's
- 18:56are we going to be the Corinthians measuring and comparing and
- 19:00competing and making
- 19:02the gifts into a winner and a loser situation or are we going
- 19:09to grow into become
- 19:11little Moseses who looked at two men prophesying without
- 19:19permission in the middle
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: of the camp and felt no threat only joy
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: who looked at the free movement of the Spirit and said,
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: yes,
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: more of this,
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: everywhere in everyone.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Would that all the Lord's people were prophets.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: And let the church say amen.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Let the church say amen again with a bit more enthusiasm and excitement.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Amen?
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Wonderful.
- 20:01Now I have said a lot and I'm being told that I'm saying a lot
- 20:03in a very condensed
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: manner here in church.
- 20:07That is because I want to get you out of here by 1130 and still
- 20:12give you time to
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: pray and share about your concerns and needs.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: But I've also been asked, you know, how do we go deeper?
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: I want to make sure that you're aware that you can go deeper.
- 20:24Every week I prepare a five-day devotional and a study guide
- 20:29and I put that on the website.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: It has a sermon on it.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: It's got a lot of wonderful things.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: So if you want to go deeper each week,
- 20:38you can go there you can download the study guide you can use
- 20:42that in your life
- 20:42groups or in your Sunday school classes or perhaps in a group
- 20:46of friends or family
- 20:48that you're meeting with and you're wanting to talk and go
- 20:50deeper with some of
- 20:51these things so please go there and please use that and or you
- 20:58can join me for
- 20:59coffee I had a taker this morning I already got it lined up
- 21:02with Jerry Ruff the
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Ruff man
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Can I call you the rough man?
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: The rough man.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Brethren rough man.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: So meeting with him.
- 21:16But I would love to get together with you for coffee or tea and
- 21:21just talk about
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: spiritual things.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: And I will even pick up the text.
