- 0:00Chapter four, Krishna, this teatless yoga, this deep union, I taught
- 0:08Viswata, the Lord of light, Veiswata to Manu, gave it he to
- 0:14Ishwaku, so passed it down the line of all my royal Rishis. Then
- 0:20with years the truth grew dim and perished. Noble Prince, now once again
- 0:26to thee. It is declared this ancient lore, this mystery supreme. Seeing
- 0:32I find thee votary and friend thy birth, Dear Lord, was in these
- 0:38later days and bright Wiswata's preceded time. How shall I comprehend this thing?
- 0:44Thou sayst from the beginning it was I who taught many fold The renewals of
- 0:50my birth have been urgent, and of thy birds too. But mine I
- 0:55know, and thine thou knowest not, O slayer of thy al Bet.
- 1:00I be unborn, undying, indestructible, the Lord of all things, living
- 1:07not the less. By Maya. By my magic, which I stamp on
- 1:11floating nature forms the primal vast, I come and go, and come when
- 1:18righteousness declines, obareth when wickedness is strong. I rise from age to age,
- 1:25and take visible shape and move man with men, succoring the good,
- 1:32thrusting the evil back and setting virtue on her seat again. Who knows the
- 1:38truth touching my birds on earth and my divine work. When he quits,
- 1:42the flesh puts on its loat, no more falls, no more down to
- 1:48earthly birth to me he comes, Dear Prince. Many there be who come
- 1:55from fear, set free from anger, from desire, keep their hearts fixed
- 2:00upon me, my faithful, purified by sacred flame of knowledge, Such as
- 2:07these mix with my being. Whoso worship me them I exalt. But all
- 2:14men everywhere shall fall into my path abed. Those souls which seek reward for
- 2:19works, make sacrifice now to the lower gods, I say to thee,
- 2:24here have they their reward? But I am He made the forecasts and portioned
- 2:34them a place after their qualities and gifts. Hee, I created the reportsful,
- 2:40I that live immortally, made all those mortal birds for works soil,
- 2:46not my essence, being works wrought uninvolved, who knows me? Acting thus
- 2:53unchained by action, action binds not him, and so perceiving. All those
- 2:59saints of old worked seeking for deliverance, worked thou as in the days gone
- 3:05by thy father's did thou sayest perplexed. It had been asked before by singers
- 3:13and by sages, what is act and what is in action? I will
- 3:17teach thee this, and now, knowing thou shalt learn, which work doth
- 3:23save needs? Must one rightly meditate those three doing, not doing, and
- 3:31undoing. Here thorny and dark. The path is he who sees how action
- 3:38may be rest rest action. He is wisest mid his kind. He had
- 3:44the truth. He doth well, acting or resting, freed in all his
- 3:50works from prickings of desire, burned clean in act by the white fire of
- 3:54truth. The wise call that why that man wise, and such a one,
- 4:01renouncing fruit of deeds, always content, always self satisfying, if he
- 4:08works that nothing that shall stain his separate soul, which quit a fear in
- 4:13hope, subduing self, rejecting outward, impulse, yielding up to body.
- 4:18Bodies need nothing save body dwells sinless, amid all sin, with equal calm,
- 4:27taking what may befall by grief, unmoved, unmoved by joy, unenvyingly
- 4:33the same in good and evil fortunes, no wise bound by bond of deeds,
- 4:41Nay, but of such a one whose crave is gone, whose soul
- 4:46is liberate, whose heart is set on truth. And of such a one
- 4:49whose work he does is work of sacrifice, which pass it purely into ash
- 4:57and smoke, consumed upon altar. All's then God. The sacrifice is brumma.
- 5:03The ghee and grain are brama. The fire is brumma, and the
- 5:08flesh it eats is Brumma. And on to Brumma attain he who in such
- 5:14office meditates on Brumma. Some votaries there be who serve the gods with flesh
- 5:19and altar smoke. But other some who, lighting subtler fires, make purer
- 5:26rite with will of worship of the which be. They who, in white
- 5:30flame of countenance consume joys of the sense, delights of ear and eye,
- 5:36foregoing tender speech and sound of song. And they who, kindling fires with
- 5:43torch of truth, burn on a hidden altar stone the bliss of youth and
- 5:47love, renouncing happiness. And they who lay for offering their their wealth,
- 5:54their penance, meditation, piety, their steadfast reading of the scrolls, their
- 6:00lower painfully gained with long austerities. And they who, making silent sacrifice,
- 6:06draw in their breath to feed the flame of thought, and breathe it forth
- 6:11to waft the heart on high, governing the vintage of each entering air,
- 6:17lest one sigh pass which hath helped not the soul. And they who,
- 6:24day by day, denying needs, lay life itself upon the altar flame burning
- 6:30the body van lo. All these keep the right of offering, as if
- 6:34they slew victims, and all thereby efface mut sin Ye, and who feed
- 6:41on the immortal fool left of such sacrifice to Brumma, pass to the unending.
- 6:47But for him that makes no sacrifice, he hath nor part nor lot,
- 6:53even in the present world. How should he share another, O,
- 6:58Thou, glory of thy line in sight of Brahma. All these offerings are
- 7:02spread and are accepted, comprehend that all proceed by act. For knowing this,
- 7:09thou shalt be quit of doubt. The sacrifice which knowledge pays is better
- 7:15than great sacrifice or great gifts offered by wealth. Since gifts worth, O,
- 7:21my Prince, lies in the mind which gives the will that serves.
- 7:27And these are gained by reverence, by strong search, by humble heed of
- 7:31those who see the truth and teach it. Knowing truth, thy heart no
- 7:36more will ache with error, for the truth shall show all things subdued to
- 7:42THEE, and thou to me moreover, son of Pandu wert thou worst of
- 7:47all wrong doers. This fairship of truth should bear thee safe and dry across
- 7:53the sea of thy transgressions. As the kindled flame of feeds on the fuel
- 8:00till it sinks to ash so on to ash urjda on to nought, the
- 8:07flame of knowledge wastes works, draws away. There is no purer like there
- 8:13too in all this world. And he who seeks it shall find it,
- 8:16being grown perfect in himself, believing he receives it when the soul masters itself
- 8:22and cleaves to truth, and comes possessing knowledge to the higher peace the utmost
- 8:30reports. But those untaught, and those without full faith, and those who
- 8:35fear are shent. No peace is here or otherwhere, no hope nor happiness.
- 8:43For whoso doubts he that, being self contained, hath vanquished doubt,
- 8:48disparting self from service, soul from works, enlightened and emancipate my prince,
- 8:56works fetter him no more. Cut a twin with sword of wisdom, son
- 9:03of Bareth. This doubt that binds thy heart beats, cleave the bond born
- 9:07of thy ignorance. Be bold and wise give thyself to the field, with
- 9:13me arise. End of chapter four
