- 0:00Speaker 1: And joining me in the studio right now is the
- 0:02Speaker 1: community in Corporate Relations manager for Food Bank, Paul White.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Good morning too, here are you going? Yeah? Really good.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Lovely to have you in this studio and I always
- 0:12Speaker 1: love finding out exactly what food Bank's up to. I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: a big supporter of food Bank and the amazing work
- 0:17Speaker 1: that you guys do. And well, right at the moment,
- 0:20Speaker 1: you're actually in need of some assistance to continue to
- 0:23Speaker 1: supply breakfast for free at some of our local schools.
- 0:26Speaker 2: That's right. We have initiated a trial for school breakfast
- 0:30Speaker 2: program in the Northern Termtory or food banks around Australia
- 0:33Speaker 2: actually have a school breakfast program. We've got a mixture
- 0:36Speaker 2: of sponsorship between Impex and the A to Milk company.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Let's supply labor which is half a job a week,
- 0:43Speaker 2: and also the transportation which where Peter and I are
- 0:45Speaker 2: going tomorrow, Peter, henry yourself out to deliver and food.
- 0:49Speaker 2: We're asking for support from the Downsouth food manufacturing companies
- 0:54Speaker 2: which all in all they're very happy to help us.
- 0:56Speaker 2: But now with the supply chain issues that are going on,
- 1:00Speaker 2: it's really getting hard and the food just hasn't appeared
- 1:02Speaker 2: so we thought while we are waiting, what better to
- 1:05Speaker 2: do is ask our community who always supports us for help.
- 1:10Speaker 2: They really big at Christmas time and we don't need
- 1:12Speaker 2: a lot, We need a bit of a push. So
- 1:14Speaker 2: we'll be out in shopping centers over the next two
- 1:16Speaker 2: weeks asking the community to donate breakfast specific food for
- 1:20Speaker 2: our school breakfast program.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Before we get to exactly what kind of foods you're
- 1:24Speaker 1: asking people to donate, how many schools does Food Bank
- 1:29Speaker 1: support here in the Northern Territory.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Well, at the moment, we have our schools program which
- 1:33Speaker 2: caters for about forty schools itself. They can come in
- 1:37Speaker 2: and purchase food from us like all our other charities.
- 1:40Speaker 2: But our trial for the school Breakfast program for the
- 1:43Speaker 2: last term and this term is twenty six specific schools
- 1:46Speaker 2: across the top end and that's right out to Jabaru
- 1:49Speaker 2: Regional Schools, Pine Creek, Adelaide River, Bachelor and also down
- 1:54Speaker 2: to Catherine and also remote schools out to juk Mingen
- 1:58Speaker 2: and Baranga Rankor where we're going tomorrow to deliver food
- 2:02Speaker 2: and also Null and Boy's wonderful. That represents twenty six schools.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Yeah right, and do we know how many kids. That's milk.
- 2:08Speaker 2: One thousand vulnerable children. Now they're deemed vulnerable the fact
- 2:12Speaker 2: that they may not be able to get breakfast in
- 2:15Speaker 2: the morning, and we know which are without breakfast. There
- 2:17Speaker 2: are other impacts from that as well. So the idea
- 2:20Speaker 2: is that food Bank supplies the breakfast food, which is
- 2:22Speaker 2: standard foods such as whipis and uhta milk, some powdered
- 2:26Speaker 2: milk some communities like powder bok over uht also baked beans, spaghetti,
- 2:31Speaker 2: just the general stand stuff. We'll be posting on the
- 2:34Speaker 2: socials this week. People can have a look and we'll
- 2:36Speaker 2: have shopping this at the nominated shopping centers Friday, starting
- 2:40Speaker 2: Friday at the Mitchell Center.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Wonderful. Now, Paul, I just want to ask you, because
- 2:44Speaker 1: I know you said around a thousand kids, and we
- 2:47Speaker 1: know that you know that what you might consider kids
- 2:50Speaker 1: that are vulnerable or that need that food. I would
- 2:52Speaker 1: imagine it's probably grown as well in the last couple
- 2:55Speaker 1: of years based on not only COVID, but cost of
- 2:57Speaker 1: living is on the rise, and you know, every parent
- 3:01Speaker 1: wants to make sure that they're in a situation where
- 3:03Speaker 1: they are able to ensure that their children's bellies are
- 3:05Speaker 1: full when they go to school, but for some people
- 3:08Speaker 1: it's bloody hard.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Right now, the need is just grown dramatically and unfortunately
- 3:14Speaker 2: our funding model, and I don't mean just the government,
- 3:17Speaker 2: I mean the support base we get from even food
- 3:20Speaker 2: manufacturing companies, from donations, so fundraising put it all together,
- 3:24Speaker 2: and the JARA is still empty. It's like the tab
- 3:26Speaker 2: is running faster, but yet we can't fill it up
- 3:29Speaker 2: quick enough. Now we've got some proposals that we're looking
- 3:31Speaker 2: at to work further afield with other organizations have shown
- 3:36Speaker 2: interest to support us. But it's not just about getting
- 3:39Speaker 2: the money. It's about having logistical capacity to be able
- 3:42Speaker 2: to deliver to the schools. So to deliver the schools
- 3:44Speaker 2: we're doing at the moment, we are flat already. We
- 3:47Speaker 2: can only take our truck away on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
- 3:50Speaker 2: because we need it here for food rescue on Mondays
- 3:53Speaker 2: and Thursdays. So if we took on any more schools, yeah,
- 3:57Speaker 2: we're going to need a new truck. So it's not
- 3:59Speaker 2: just a about one thing. It's the impact. And as
- 4:01Speaker 2: you're right, the need is growing dramatically and we're obligated
- 4:05Speaker 2: to respond to that need in times of trouble, we
- 4:08Speaker 2: ask the community to help and they always do.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Oh, the community always wants to help, particularly with a
- 4:13Speaker 1: great organization like food bank. Mate tell us exactly what
- 4:17Speaker 1: we can donate and where we can donate us.
- 4:20Speaker 2: All right, Well, the main thing we need to be
- 4:24Speaker 2: mindful of that we need dried and ten goods. So
- 4:28Speaker 2: it's got a longer shelf life. Enables us to collect it,
- 4:31Speaker 2: to store it, to sort it and then get it
- 4:33Speaker 2: out to community. So Whippis, especially the one point twenty
- 4:37Speaker 2: five that's a box of Whipicks cost five dollars in
- 4:39Speaker 2: the shop. Now we've estimated that twenty four of those
- 4:43Speaker 2: packets will feed one school out and remote community for
- 4:48Speaker 2: a term. Right, so five bucks of twenty is it's
- 4:51Speaker 2: one hundred bucks, so maybe one hundred and thirty one
- 4:53Speaker 2: hundred and forty dollars that gives one school that Whippis
- 4:56Speaker 2: flown titan. So we're going to be at Coal's as
- 4:59Speaker 2: I said, Cole's Wallas and I g A over the
- 5:01Speaker 2: next two weeks. We'll advertise where we're going to be
- 5:03Speaker 2: and we'll also have gift vouchers available through Coals so
- 5:07Speaker 2: people if they don't have time to go and get
- 5:09Speaker 2: the whippicks. They can actually give us a voucher, pay
- 5:11Speaker 2: for a voucher and we'll go and buy the whippicks
- 5:13Speaker 2: for them.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And so this is kicking off. So when do we
- 5:16Speaker 1: need to donate.
- 5:16Speaker 2: If we can from now, you can neither. You can
- 5:20Speaker 2: bring food into food Bank yourself. You can do a
- 5:23Speaker 2: workplace food drive and collect this to just contact food Bank.
- 5:26Speaker 2: We can send you out some digital assets that you
- 5:29Speaker 2: can do sharing of bring it in and then call
- 5:32Speaker 2: us and we can come and collect. Or We'll be
- 5:34Speaker 2: at Cole's Mitchell Center this Friday, Then on Saturday we're
- 5:38Speaker 2: out to call a Linger Central, and on Sunday we'll
- 5:41Speaker 2: be at Coal's North Lakes and then the following weeks
- 5:45Speaker 2: Gateway Palms and Walworst. On the Friday, Saturday out at
- 5:50Speaker 2: Karama Shopping Center and Sunday at Nightclift Shopping Center. And
- 5:53Speaker 2: on Thursday, the finale will be at zook Holi Plaza.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Oh wonderful.
- 6:00Speaker 2: So if you can't get to those centers, we just
- 6:02Speaker 2: don't have the capacity to do all the centers. It's unfortunate.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Peter myself will be working on the weekends to do
- 6:07Speaker 2: that with our volunteers, but we need a staff member there.
- 6:10Speaker 2: But give us a call. We're easy to find. And
- 6:13Speaker 2: if you've got something a bit different you want to do,
- 6:15Speaker 2: give us a donation or a corporate business might want
- 6:17Speaker 2: a sponsor and entire school so for the term. So
- 6:20Speaker 2: we can work out how much that would be.
- 6:23Speaker 1: It doesn't sound like it would be a huge amount
- 6:25Speaker 1: based on the cost of those wheatbeaks and some of
- 6:28Speaker 1: the other stuff. It doesn't sound like it'd be a
- 6:30Speaker 1: massive amount. If you are a business, it's maybe, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 1: maybe you are going through a good, fruitful time right
- 6:37Speaker 1: now and you've got the capacity to donate and to
- 6:40Speaker 1: do a little bit more than what you have previously.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I'll certainly give you guys a call it food bank.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yes, well, we can also offer a DGR which is
- 6:47Speaker 2: a deductible gift receipt for businesses that wish to donate
- 6:50Speaker 2: food or or donate money. So yeah, if everyone helps
- 6:54Speaker 2: us and Chips in Coals are doing it, Will Works
- 6:57Speaker 2: are doing it, Ida is doing it, the government's doing it.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Everyone working together, we can get us across the line
- 7:03Speaker 2: and have food ready for the kids for this coming down.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Such an important thing to do. The other thing that
- 7:08Speaker 1: I reckon is, you know, is a good way of
- 7:10Speaker 1: doing it. If you are somebody that's going out and
- 7:12Speaker 1: doing your shopping on the weekend at any of those
- 7:14Speaker 1: locations that Paul's just mentioned, obviously buying your own food,
- 7:18Speaker 1: why not get a few extra things that you're then
- 7:20Speaker 1: able to donate as part of you know, you're not
- 7:22Speaker 1: even having to go out of your way.
- 7:24Speaker 2: We look for the purple binness in those centers. The
- 7:25Speaker 2: purple bins have been delivered today, so just pop them
- 7:28Speaker 2: in there.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Yeah, great thing to do. Well. We always appreciate your time, Paul.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Thank you so very much for coming in and having
- 7:34Speaker 1: a chat with us, and yeah, all the best with
- 7:37Speaker 1: this food drive. Can you let us know how it
- 7:38Speaker 1: all goes and how are you're tracking By the end
- 7:41Speaker 1: of the week, we'll be talking.
- 7:42Speaker 2: To you every day. We'll call into the station if
- 7:45Speaker 2: we can have a chat.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Someone give us a ring and tell us how it's going.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Good on you. Thanks so much for having a chat
- 7:50Speaker 1: this morning. No worries, it all
