- 0:01Have you ever wondered what the impact is on how you speak to yourself?
- 0:06I'm Kimberly Boyd, founder of Live Life Fully,
- 0:10and welcome to Candid Coach Conversations.
- 0:12Today I have with me Guadalupe and Tiffanie Hi,
- 0:17ladies!
- 0:19Hello.
- 0:19Hello.
- 0:21So I asked y'all to join me today because I'm wondering like what is
- 0:25the impact of how we speak to ourselves?
- 0:28And I know Guadalupe you've got a whole community about get out of your own way.
- 0:34And I'm I'm guessing, I don't know.
- 0:36I'm actually assuming, so I'll take that back.
- 0:39if it's related, like how we talk to ourselves,
- 0:43how does it impact us? I'd love to hear from both of you.
- 0:47I ~
- 0:48When I think about this, I like to think about both ways.
- 0:52When you hear that voice in the back of your head,
- 0:55when something happens, it is either going to be encouraging or it's gonna have some
- 1:00shame to it. And when we think about take a moment to pause and think about what's
- 1:07a question in my that I'm asking myself.
- 1:09Is it why did I do this?
- 1:13Why did I know better than this?
- 1:15Those kinds of questions that's shame.
- 1:17And that's keeping you stuck, and it's not encouraging you to go forward.
- 1:23And then there's that way of talking with yourself of being curious:
- 1:28okay, this is what happened.
- 1:31How can I make this better? What can I do?
- 1:34Who can I ask for help? And that's more of that:
- 1:38hey, I'm grabbing your hand and we're walking forward.
- 1:43I love how you've made this distinction that using the word why comes from
- 1:48a place of shame, like why did I do that or why didn't I do this?
- 1:51Whatever. And how getting curious opens the door.
- 1:55I love that you've made that distinction.
- 1:57I think that is so incredibly true and so important.
- 2:00Yes. Tiffany, what about you?
- 2:03I think that I I think I have a a little bit I I think about
- 2:08it little bit differently, right?
- 2:09Because I want to talk to myself the way I talk to others.
- 2:12And I think that's something I try to remember often.
- 2:15with the people around me. I know that I like to encourage them.
- 2:19And I want them I try to be their their cheerleader in a lot of ways,
- 2:23and I want them to win because when other people win,
- 2:26I win. And
- 2:28So I like to look at it, it's not just about positivity,
- 2:31right? But how do we how do we get curious about what someone's doing versus
- 2:35how do I have curiosity about what I'm doing,
- 2:38right? Getting curious about how I'm thinking and and how I wanna pursue things.
- 2:42So yeah, I like to look at the way we talk to ourselves,
- 2:46not simply about positivity or I mean I I think to you,
- 2:50~ Guaralupe, I like this idea of like
- 2:55w how you're interacting with other people.
- 2:57but yeah, I it's kind of like do unto others as you'd want done to yourself.
- 3:01Right. And that's how I look at I don't want to talk to myself any different than
- 3:05I would talk to somebody else.
- 3:07A good point. You know, I tell people all the time when I'm talking with parents,
- 3:11I'll say, you know, I'm wondering what it would be like if you talked
- 3:14to your friends the way you talk to your children.
- 3:17I wonder what those relationships would be like.
- 3:20And so many times I've heard, well,
- 3:22I wouldn't have any friends. I'm like,
- 3:24okay. And so then to take that even a step further,
- 3:28like you two are saying, which I think is so beautiful,
- 3:30is if we talk to other people the way sometimes we talk to ourselves.
- 3:36What would those relationships be like?
- 3:38And they'd probably not be very fun if we did that.
- 3:42So yeah, gosh, I'll bring up such good points.
- 3:45So I do also, Guadalupe, you and I have worked together for a long time
- 3:49and I'm curious because I know you've worked very hard
- 3:55in changing how you speak to yourself.
- 3:59And so if you don't mind, I'd love for you to share.
- 4:02your personal experience with this.
- 4:05So one of the things that has been a big moment for me was one day we were
- 4:11in the coaching, our coaching meeting,
- 4:14and that was after the tornado had hit our house and everything.
- 4:19So feeling very disorganized and going back to kind of slipping into wanting things
- 4:25to be perfect and setting these expectations for myself.
- 4:30Okay, can we pause for a second,
- 4:32y'all? I mean, the magnitude here.
- 4:34She says when the tornado went by and she was feeling disorganized,
- 4:38y'all, her fent her house was destroyed.
- 4:41She had picket, fence pickets through her walls,
- 4:46through her kitchen. Had she not gotten up off the couch,
- 4:52had her she not said, Okay, I can't even think of your dog's name at the moment.
- 4:56Yes.
- 4:56Say what?
- 4:59We gotta go. Had she not gotten up and gone into the utility room with her dog,
- 5:04a picket fence would have gone through her head.
- 5:07So when she talks about disorganized,
- 5:10that might be an understatement.
- 5:13Okay, back to you.
- 5:14And I was putting all this pressure on myself of okay,
- 5:18how come I can't complete the things that I usually am able to do in the time that
- 5:24I can usually do them.
- 5:27And it was actually Kimberly that told me,
- 5:29okay, what is that self-talk looking like?
- 5:32Is that and she put it in a perspective where it did touch me more because
- 5:38she said when a parent is yelling at their kid or you're being yelled at
- 5:42by a parent or an authority figure,
- 5:44what happens? Like you shut down.
- 5:49And then it's the other way when they're encouraging you or trying
- 5:52to understand you and helping you forward,
- 5:55then you're
- 5:57Mm-hmm.
- 5:57more willing to ask for that help.
- 6:00You're more willing to step forward.
- 6:02And so that stayed with me in that sense of okay,
- 6:07when I'm going through situations,
- 6:09can I be my friend?
- 6:12And I feel that difference too.
- 6:14When I am shaming myself, I want to be small as possible
- 6:20and quiet and be safe, even though that's not aligned with what
- 6:26my dreams are. And I think a lot of that was how a lot of things were.
- 6:32Growing up, it was a lot of like,
- 6:35hey, do what you're supposed to do and be safe.
- 6:40And like that's that safety. And then when I got into coaching,
- 6:45starting to step out a little bit,
- 6:47that's when I'm like, okay, this discomfort doesn't mean to stop.
- 6:52Like there's there's more experiences after this discomfort.
- 6:55And it's uncomfortable until it's not.
- 6:59And so I think these experiences that I've gained through coaching
- 7:04and allowing myself to have a voice is kind of ignited more
- 7:09and more and also wanting more people to feel this as well.
- 7:14I first of all thank you so much for sharing and I absolutely love love love
- 7:20the question. I wrote it down.
- 7:22Can I be my friend? What in the world?
- 7:26What a powerful question. I love it.
- 7:28Thank you for sharing. ~ my gosh.
- 7:32Other thing that stood out to me or ~ go ahead.
- 7:33I would like to ask a question
- 7:37to you actually, Guaralupe, is whenever you were experiencing all these things,
- 7:42how did you quiet all the external chaos in order to have that kind
- 7:48of that moment to ask yourself that question or that realization of
- 7:53how am I speaking to myself? Like how are you able to quiet all that noise?
- 7:57So I do think I have a skill. And I think a lot of that was that safety part
- 8:03of chaos going on to where there could be a lot going on.
- 8:08And in my head, sometimes there's a lot going on,
- 8:12and other times I'm able to like shut it off.
- 8:15And so when it would come to that,
- 8:19it's like, okay, we're in a moment where need some help here.
- 8:24And I think that's
- 8:26where it's more helpful for me to get out of my head with pen and paper
- 8:31and that is usually what it comes to is being able to write things
- 8:36out and that's where some of those questions come from.
- 8:40Because it's easier to be able to answer and prop like process things when they're
- 8:46right in front of you than up here.
- 8:48Right, 'cause you can't even see when they're up there.
- 8:50No matter how far you
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:51roll your eyes, you can't see all of it clearly.
- 8:54Yeah.
- 8:55Yeah. The other thing I love is about this comfortable,
- 8:59you know, that even though it's uncomfortable doesn't mean that's it.
- 9:04Like there's more to it than that and there's life beyond the discomfort.
- 9:08And I love that so much. I think comfortable is easy until it's
- 9:15not. because I do think comfortable eventually when we live a comfortable,
- 9:20comfortable, comfortable, comfortable.
- 9:23comfort zone life, eventually we're gonna feel like we're tied up and that
- 9:28we our options are limited. And so again,
- 9:32going back to the whole reason I named the company Live Life Fully is because
- 9:36I do want people to be comfortable and to grow and to have that those little shifts
- 9:42or maybe big shifts and perspectives so that they can truly live life more fully.
- 9:50So I love that you brought up the comfortable piece,
- 9:52'cause yep, it is. Until it's not.
- 9:56Yeah. So Tiffany
- 9:57Think that's really poignant
- 9:58though, because whenever you say comfortable and you get used to the comfort,
- 10:03right? And then it's it gets so hard to then be motivated to change,
- 10:07but it almost becomes a rut, right?
- 10:10And we always attribute ruts as being a bad thing.
- 10:12But the thing is, is that there's also some comfort and recognizable
- 10:17or familiarity with being in that rut,
- 10:19right? ~ I'm I'm safe on this path.
- 10:22and I think that kind of
- 10:24~ ton of 'cause I could also equate it to being in a rut,
- 10:27right? ~ yeah.
- 10:29And then you at least
- 10:30you know what to expect.
- 10:31And it'll keep you stuck like quicksand.
- 10:35Yeah.
- 10:36I do think that's where intentions come in.
- 10:40Intentions and the reflection of things.
- 10:43One thing I've learned within coaching has been you learn a lot of systems,
- 10:49things that work for you. What works for you,
- 10:52what doesn't work for you. Because I think as you're learning about so much things,
- 10:57it's very easy to be like, okay,
- 10:59I'm gonna place this in my life right here for it to fit.
- 11:03and then you're trying to force it and then you're mad at yourself because
- 11:09it doesn't work out.
- 11:10Ha ha ha
- 11:11And being
- 11:12able to say, okay, based on what my schedule is like,
- 11:16where my energy is at during the day,
- 11:20what can I do to help manage? So one thing I've liked to say is I
- 11:26can create a system that helps me maintain my energy.
- 11:30Maintain how do I want to feel at the end of the day.
- 11:35Yeah, so good. So talk to us more about the intention piece.
- 11:39So is it setting the intention,
- 11:41asking yourself and then setting the intention,
- 11:43or tell us what you mean by that.
- 11:46Yeah, so one of the biggest things has been what do I want
- 11:52the outcome to be? How do I wanna feel?
- 11:55And I think because before coaching for me,
- 11:58if I wasn't so feely with things and I've been able
- 12:02to feel like new emotions,
- 12:06more joy through coaching. And so now when I'm able to set that intention,
- 12:11how do I want to feel at the end of the day?
- 12:13If I want to feel joy at the end of the day,
- 12:15then that's gonna me be me putting something at the end of the day
- 12:20for me to activate that joy as well versus
- 12:24that difference of living life and existing and I think
- 12:29Love.
- 12:29it activates that for you of okay this is how I want it to be how can
- 12:35I influence it so that I can experience that.
- 12:39Then to add on to the rut part for the intention,
- 12:43what came to mind was, okay, I know that I can get comfortable with things,
- 12:48so I want to set an intention for at the end of the month to get
- 12:54on a call and talk about these were the things that worked well for me.
- 12:58And so you've got that reflection piece to keep going forward.
- 13:03What were things that you want to keep because it served you,
- 13:07and what are some things that you
- 13:09I love that. And maybe even stop doing.
- 13:13I know for me, yeah, I I notice what I want to change or do differently
- 13:17and then some things I'm like I don't even want to do that anymore.
- 13:20Like I tried, not for me, pivoting out.
- 13:24Yeah. Tiffany, I noticed as Guadalupe was talking that ~ you were smiling
- 13:30and nodding and so I'm wondering if anything came up for you.
- 13:33And if so, I'd love to hear.
- 13:35Yes. ~ one of the things I was considering is the desire,
- 13:40right? The desire to want to get out of that comfort zone.
- 13:43Right. There you know
- 13:44Hmm. Wait.
- 13:46sometimes people are like, I'm finally safe.
- 13:50I'm finally in a comfortable place in life.
- 13:52I don't want to do anything to jeopardize this.
- 13:54And that's where the coaching language comes in and says
- 13:58What more can we achieve? Are we talking to ourselves like this is it?
- 14:02Like this is all life has to give is just healing?
- 14:04Like that's it. ~ when in in fact we can grow,
- 14:08we c we can motivate ourselves to want more and that's okay.
- 14:13Right. It comes back to giving yourself permission to want more and setting
- 14:18up your intentions, right? But I come back to somebody has to want that,
- 14:22right? You have to want to get out of that rut.
- 14:25And it comes back to
- 14:27How are we talking to ourselves?
- 14:29Right? What what are what narrative are we speaking into existence where
- 14:36we're unable to achieve greatness because whatever self-belief that we have,
- 14:41when in fact there isn't your only limit is your imagination.
- 14:45so yeah, that's what I was thinking about when you were talking about wanting things
- 14:49to happen or like setting intentions,
- 14:51and I kept thinking like.
- 14:53And you have to want that.
- 14:55Yeah, it's so fascinating.
- 14:57because even in coaching, so we talk about the rut,
- 15:01and probably even for me too, if I think back to when I first started working with
- 15:05a coach, there were ruts that I didn't even know existed.
- 15:11And so then when I gained clarity and was able to identify ruts,
- 15:15and it could be a rut in career,
- 15:17it could be a rut a rut at home,
- 15:19it could be a rut with friends,
- 15:20it could be a rut in how you want to dress,
- 15:24I don't know, in the food you want to eat,
- 15:26your health, like whatever. There's all these different parts of our lives.
- 15:30And truly I've seen it happen.
- 15:34And again, if I were to really sit down and think about when I first started working
- 15:37with coach.
- 15:38There were ruts that I didn't know.
- 15:40There's ruts that people didn't even know.
- 15:42And so they didn't know they wanted to get out of it until perhaps they were talking
- 15:47about this area of their life and gained clarity and then it became
- 15:52it like boom shine the light on the rut.
- 15:57And then they were like, Whoa,
- 16:00this is actually where I want change.
- 16:03Or this is actually the goal that I want to go after.
- 16:07I'm wondering if there's also healing in the movement forward,
- 16:12right? Discovering, ~ I'm in these ruts.
- 16:15There's healing in that. So healing doesn't have to be simply therapy
- 16:21and going back, right? Healing is also in
- 16:23the ability to believe I can do more.
- 16:26Right?
- 16:27I totally
- 16:28agree with you. And I do think that's a difference.
- 16:30I you know, so many times I've heard,
- 16:32well, I don't know if I even need a coach.
- 16:34Like I tried therapy, it didn't work.
- 16:36Okay. And I've also heard this whole thing of for healing they need
- 16:41to do therapy first and then they can hire a coach.
- 16:44And I'm like, I disagree.
- 16:47Yes, I believe in therapy and I don't think it's the prerequisite to getting
- 16:53a coach or advancing your life in a new or different direction.
- 16:57I definitely think there's healing that comes from coaching because and
- 17:02I think that if I without taking time to think about it,
- 17:06but I think it does come from a place of realization of what's possible.
- 17:13It goes back to, I believe, to that permission piece and to gaining clarity,
- 17:17regardless of where we came from,
- 17:20regardless of what all has happened to us.
- 17:23Like I can decide right here today that I want my life to be different.
- 17:27And in order to do that, or I want my life.
- 17:32I hear it all the time. I just want my life to be better.
- 17:34I just want my life, I just want to be happier.
- 17:36Great. We have to identify like what is that even gonna look like?
- 17:41So that future casting piece, and then where's the gap?
- 17:45And how do we fill that gap? And notice this gap is not about going back.
- 17:50It's about getting there.
- 17:54So I think you bring up a very good point,
- 17:55Tiffany.
- 17:56What what came up for me was seeing coaching more of a shift.
- 18:01So when working with clients,
- 18:04and I think about the way that clients see themselves at first,
- 18:09there could be limiting beliefs that are there.
- 18:11And in coaching, we're not necessarily going to dive in of where did that come from?
- 18:17Where did it start? It's gonna be okay.
- 18:21These are the limiting beliefs and we're gonna go to point of references.
- 18:25Like what are things that you have done to activate other beliefs?
- 18:31If the limiting beliefs are going to be replaced,
- 18:34what is that reframing?
- 18:37And so as they're practicing that reframing within their own lives,
- 18:42they I've had a client come back where she's like,
- 18:46whoa, like I took a moment,
- 18:49I practiced this and I caught myself saying all these limiting beliefs.
- 18:54I'm not enough. And then she's like,
- 18:57I brought out my phone, had it in my notes,
- 19:00and I was telling my new beliefs to myself.
- 19:05And she is like, and I took care of the situation differently.
- 19:09And so that shift that happened,
- 19:12it was that shift of perspective as well for her of I can show up this way.
- 19:18I am capable.
- 19:21Yeah, so good.
- 19:23What is necessary? Right? Is it necessary to bury the skeletons and
- 19:29to to heal from the past in order to achieve success in the future?
- 19:33And I don't think you have to.
- 19:35it's almost like goal attaining.
- 19:37and I I can I and I can almost visualize how this shift with work is to say,
- 19:42this thing is keeping me back and it doesn't have to.
- 19:47I can actually change and shift to a different perspective from a negative
- 19:51to a positive, right? I can explore challenges and say,
- 19:55I'm being challenged from these life things and I can still do these other hard
- 20:00things and I and it's okay. And is it really even that hard?
- 20:04Because it's gonna pass anyways,
- 20:06right? So 'cause when you get past the hard things,
- 20:09then you're like, Well that was easier than I thought,
- 20:11or it must not have been that hard.
- 20:12I survived it.
- 20:13I guess it's about the point of references or like how do you measure,
- 20:17right? how do you measure these difficulties and conversations?
- 20:21So yeah, I l something about the point of reference really kind
- 20:24of shifted my mindset for me. because it it's it's like putting putting a tag down,
- 20:30like a tack on a map or something,
- 20:33right? Is something I can visualize.
- 20:36And I I want to point out too,
- 20:38this just hit me, is this negative and positive,
- 20:42like shifting from a negative to a positive.
- 20:44And while that sounds glorious,
- 20:47and I want that for everyone, sometimes people are
- 20:52in a place where shifting from the negative to the positive is like
- 20:56a 30-foot jump in the air. And so it's moving from negative to
- 21:03To maybe neutral first. And also what popped up is I think if when
- 21:08I hear positive and negative, because I mean,
- 21:11wouldn't it be nice if we all just walked around all positive and life is
- 21:16all of it and acted as if there was nothing ever wrong and nothing
- 21:20was challenging and nothing was hard.
- 21:21Sounds great. I think it would be boring,
- 21:24quite honestly. And
- 21:26Mm-hmm.
- 21:27think about I think about my friend again.
- 21:30I know I mention him a lot. I've I truly admire Christian Moore ~ and
- 21:35the work that he's done. And so one of the things that he has a metaphor that
- 21:40he uses is a car battery. And I do not know much about cars.
- 21:44Let me say that first. Cars are not my thing.
- 21:47I want one that ro that drives and gets me where I need to go.
- 21:51I don't care if it drives for me.
- 21:53I can do that part. I I just want it to work.
- 21:57And but what I do know about a car,
- 21:58other than it has four wheels,
- 22:00is it has this thing called a battery.
- 22:03And that battery, and I don't know all the whatever that goes to it,
- 22:07but I know there's a positive and a negative.
- 22:09And if that battery is dead and I try to jump or charge that battery,
- 22:15whatever you call it, if I only connect to the positive,
- 22:19my car is not gonna go. And if I only connect to the negative.
- 22:25My car is not gonna go. And my my thing about cars is I want it to go when
- 22:30I want it to go. And so I can't dismiss the negative as
- 22:36if it doesn't exist. No, I have to have it and the positive so that I can go.
- 22:42So when the negative comes up for me,
- 22:45I want to hold on to it. So although and I
- 22:50I do this to myself whether I'm alone or with people,
- 22:53and yes, I teach it in coaching,
- 22:55is I put the although is always in my left hand for some reason.
- 22:59Maybe because we l read left to right.
- 23:02I don't know. But for me, although,
- 23:04whatever it is, and then I find the truth also,
- 23:09a truth. It doesn't have to be the,
- 23:13but a truth or what I know for sure.
- 23:16So although I don't know how to
- 23:19Do a backflip.
- 23:20I know I can find a teacher. I may not ever be able to do a backflip.
- 23:25I can find a teacher.
- 23:27So I hold space for both 'cause I do think both things can be true.
- 23:30So when you said positive, negative,
- 23:32that's what popped up 'cause yes,
- 23:34I want everybody to be in a positive state of well being.
- 23:38Don't dismiss the negative.
- 23:40I love that. And it also reminds me of the yeah I don't know yet.
- 23:44There's
- 23:45Yes.
- 23:46room for that growth room.
- 23:49Yes. The power of yet. Love it.
- 23:51I don't know who first said that line,
- 23:54but whoever it was, thank you very much.
- 23:57Yeah. Right. So talking about the things that we say to ourselves
- 24:02and then going back to Guadalupe's community,
- 24:05get out of your own way. ~ that is open and ready for people that are part
- 24:11of the Live Life Fully Club. So when you join the club,
- 24:15yeah, you've got access to several different coaches with different communities.
- 24:20We all
- 24:22Any coach that has a community goes live once a month.
- 24:25Everything is recorded. And so it'll always be in your portal to where
- 24:29you can go back and watch the reruns.
- 24:31Cause no, not everybody is available on the certain day at the certain time that
- 24:36each coach has their community.
- 24:38But I love that because that limiting beliefs,
- 24:40pushing beyond what you think currently,
- 24:44expanding perspective, I think it's wonderful.
- 24:48So ladies.
- 24:51Any final thoughts that you would like to share with our audience today
- 24:55or a little nugget that you want them to walk away with?
- 24:58So one thing that came up to mind is when I think
- 25:02Yeah.
- 25:02about my self talk
- 25:05In that moment, I one question that I've learned to ask myself is
- 25:09how is my relationship with discouragement right now?
- 25:12Because one pattern that I would see would be discouragement oftentimes
- 25:19can lead to disconnection. And so when you're watching that relationship with
- 25:26discouragement, you can catch it and acknowledge
- 25:30it and intentionally choose your step forward.
- 25:34Versus letting this discouragement take the wheel.
- 25:38I love that. I'm right now that too.
- 25:40So can
- 25:40Mm-hmm.
- 25:41I be my friend? And what is my relationship with discouragement right now?
- 25:45And I love that it's the right now.
- 25:48You're keeping it in the present.
- 25:51Mm-hmm.
- 25:53Love it.
- 25:54I think the nugget I would leave is something that both of you already touched on.
- 25:59because I think it sits with me is would I speak this way to a friend?
- 26:03I think that's something that's that needs to be you need to be reminded
- 26:07of in terms of how do we talk to ourselves,
- 26:10you know, like would I be my own friend kind of thing.
- 26:12yeah.
- 26:13Just being kind to yourself, but it's more than just kindness,
- 26:16right? It's not kindness isn't enough,
- 26:18right? It's because sometimes you need hard love or hard truths.
- 26:22you know, that has to be there too,
- 26:24right? Like the holding all those.
- 26:26but the how would I talk to a friend about this thing?
- 26:28Right? Would I encourage them?
- 26:30Would I ask them curio questions?
- 26:32Would I be curious?
- 26:33So good. I love it. I love it,
- 26:37I love it. Visualize your friends sitting right next to you,
- 26:40having the same kind of situation.
- 26:42And how would you interact with them?
- 26:44So good. my gosh, ladies, thank you so much for joining us today.
- 26:49And listeners, thank you for joining Candid Coach Conversations.
- 26:53Until next time, remember to live life fully and enjoy every moment.
