Transcript
- 0:00Hi, this is Stephanie Maas, and today I want to talk to you about a luxury we no longer have in today's employment world, and that is the luxury of training or rather not training our employees.
- 0:17One of the phenomenons that I have been following in my niche over the course of the last 10 years is just the development of Talent sometimes it's just learning about the next generation in the Millennials.
- 0:29Everybody loves them Another perspective is what's actually happening in the workplace for those of you that are bankers.
- 0:35You'll remember 10 15 20 years ago training programs were abundant Today, they're almost non existent.
- 0:44Combine that with a rising retirement population, meaning a growing number of folks leaving the workplace every single year, plus the fact that many of us just in our normal nine to five, which for most of us is no longer nine to five.
- 1:02It's more like 730 to 630.
- 1:03Go home, have dinner, be with the kids, put them to bed and then work for another two hours.
- 1:07We just don't have the time to really train folks as they are needed to be successful.
- 1:14And training, by the way, happens at all kinds of different levels.
- 1:18Sometimes it's taking somebody that's on a track and just accelerating it.
- 1:22For some, it is starting over at the beginning.
- 1:24But unfortunately, this is a practice that we no longer have the luxury.
- 1:32Yes, you can pay people more and try to attract better talent with compensation.
- 1:37You can pay more to retain your talent.
- 1:39But what can we do today?
- 1:42We have got to get back to the business of training.
- 1:47Forget formal training programs.
- 1:50Hardly anybody has one anymore.
- 1:53So to expect a training program?
- 1:55To do any of the training that is necessary, forget it.
- 2:00It just, it doesn't exist.
- 2:02Leaders, it is time to roll up your sleeves.
- 2:06Shoulder to shoulder and really look at your role as a mentor, a trainer, and a developer.
- 2:15Again, I know you're overworked.
- 2:17You don't have enough time as it is, but unfortunately you are the last generation that has had that formal training.
- 2:26So go teach what you know and train, train, train.
- 2:32It is an absolute mandatory part of what we do, how we lead, and if you any chance of being able to retain good talent, training has to be a foundation of their work experience.
