Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / X (Formerly Twitter) Value Drops 71%
Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical Crossroads, The
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:13And I'm your host, Will Walden. Investment firm Fidelity has
- 0:17adjusted its valuation of shares in X Holdings, which is a
- 0:21company previously recognized as Twitter.
- 0:24Now, this adjustment comes as part of the mutual fund giant's
- 0:27ongoing assessment of its investment, originally made when
- 0:31Elon Musk acquired the company for $44 billion.
- 0:35Fidelity's recent disclosure, which includes data up to the
- 0:38end of November 23, reveals a significant markdown in the
- 0:42value of X Holdings and the mutual fund company now assesses
- 0:46X Holdings to be worth 71.5% less than its value at the time
- 0:51of purchase. This revelation includes a 10.7%
- 0:55reduction during November alone. This markdown period coincided
- 0:59with a controversial moment from Elon Musk, the head of X
- 1:02Holdings. In November during an on stage
- 1:05interview with the New York Times, Musk responded to
- 1:07boycotting X advertisers with the expletive laden remark Go F
- 1:12yourself. The statement possibly impacted
- 1:14the perception and the value of the company now comparing to
- 1:18other companies in the sector. Meta's stock rose by 4.9% in
- 1:22November, while Snap experienced an impressive 38.2% increase in
- 1:28their shares. These figures highlight the
- 1:30differing fortunes of companies within the tech industry and
- 1:33provide a contrast to the situation at X.
- 1:35Now, looking back, Fidelity started marking down its
- 1:38investment in the company immediately after Musk's
- 1:41takeover. However, it's notable that there
- 1:43were periods early in 2023 when Fidelity either increased the
- 1:47value of these shares or maintain their stability.
- 1:50Now this indicates fluctuations in the company's perceived
- 1:53worth. It's important to note that
- 1:55Fidelity, despite being a shareholder and the privately
- 1:57held X Holdings, may not have extensive insider information
- 2:01about the company's financial performance.
- 2:02This means that their valuation could be based on very limited
- 2:05data and other stair holders might have different views on
- 2:08the worth of the stock now. X Holdings, in a move that
- 2:12caught media attention, briefly reinstated headlines recently
- 2:15too. And this is for user posts
- 2:19containing links. This happened on Tuesday of this
- 2:21week, only to reverse this change the following day.
- 2:25This fluctuation in the platform's features reflects
- 2:28ongoing adjustments under the new ownership of Elon Musk.
- 2:32Things happen at X really fast. Move fast and break stuff, as
- 2:36they used to say in Silicon Valley.
- 2:38Now this alteration came, and after X had initially removed
- 2:42news, links and headlines from post in October following Musk's
- 2:45assertion that such changes would enhance the platform's
- 2:48aesthetics. The removal, however, required
- 2:51users to click on an image to view the title, leading to some
- 2:54confusion and criticism. Musk had promised in late
- 2:57November that headlines would be reintegrated into the platform
- 3:00in an upcoming release, suggesting they would be
- 3:03overlaid on the image or the URL card.
- 3:05And now this change aimed to address user concerns about the
- 3:08accessibility and the clarity of linked content.
- 3:11Indeed, posts on X with links now feature headlines, though
- 3:15presented differently than before.
- 3:17The temporary change on Tuesday showed headlines in small text
- 3:21at the bottom of the image of a URL card, specifically on the
- 3:24desktop version of the platform. However, this update did not
- 3:28extend to all versions of the app.
- 3:30The change was not implemented in the iOS app and the Android
- 3:34app. Headlines continue to appear
- 3:36under the image as they did before the removal, highlighting
- 3:38inconsistencies in the platform's user experience
- 3:41across different devices. Some users on the web version of
- 3:46X are now seeing headlines and website titles appearing over
- 3:49the images that link to those pages.
- 3:51This changed. While a positive, development is
- 3:53not without its issues, such as truncated headlines and very
- 3:57hard to read small text. The initial decision to remove
- 4:00headlines was driven by Musk's desire to streamline the
- 4:03appearance of posts. However, this led to
- 4:05difficulties in understanding where a link image would
- 4:08redirect users, prompting workarounds like embedding
- 4:11headlines and images or post text.
- 4:13And Musk's promise to reinstate headlines over URL cards is
- 4:16gradually coming to fruition. As evidenced by these recent
- 4:19changes, however, the rollout of this feature is inconsistent,
- 4:23particularly on Android and iOS, and the valuation and
- 4:27functionality changes that X Holdings reflect the complex and
- 4:31often unpredictable nature of the tech industry and social
- 4:33media. Fidelity's markdown of X shares,
- 4:36coupled with the platform's evolving interface shows that
- 4:39there are challenges faced when you take over a company, a
- 4:42legacy company like Twitter. The situation at X Holdings is a
- 4:46microcosm of the larger tech industry as well, where
- 4:49innovation, public perception and market dynamics interplay to
- 4:53shape the fortunes of companies. And as X continues to adjust,
- 4:57Musk's leadership, its impact on the sector and the stakeholders
- 5:01and the money people remains a subject of keen interest.
- 5:04Now, Fidelity's decision to reduce the valuation of its
- 5:07shares in X Holding in conjunction with the company's
- 5:10ongoing adjustments to this platform shows that it's often
- 5:14volatile at Twitter, formerly Twitter X.
- 5:18But X will continue to adapt strategies, have responsive
- 5:21leadership and navigate the complexities of a new platform.
