- 0:00Everybody on that road wanted the same thing.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:07Chamber 1158 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:12yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.

- 0:30Here's the upgrade you think you need to focus on what you want,
- 0:34but upgraded Thinking focuses on helping others get what they
- 0:37want. Here's the story.
- 0:40A young man is standing on the side of the road in Europe
- 0:43trying to hitchhike. This is Chuck Feeney.
- 0:46It's 1957 years before he becomes one of the richest men
- 0:50alive and gives nearly every dollar of it away.
- 0:53But right now he's just a broke 26 year old holding a sign, and
- 0:57so is everybody else. Hitchhiking was popular at the
- 1:00time. Looking down the road, every
- 1:02hitchhiker is holding a piece of cardboard with a city written on
- 1:06it. Paris, Nice, Marcel, Every one
- 1:10of them advertising the same thing to drivers passing by.
- 1:13I want you to take me here. They're a line of identical
- 1:17thumbs. Sofini changes his sign.
- 1:20He stops advertising his destination and starts
- 1:23advertising his value to the driver.
- 1:26His new offer is simple. Ride with me and you get
- 1:29something, an English conversation.
- 1:33Now he's not just one of 100, he's the only one making that
- 1:36trade. A French driver might want to
- 1:39practice English. It didn't matter that plenty of
- 1:42people could speak English. Feeny made the benefit obvious
- 1:45and easy to say yes to, and he had no trouble getting a lift.
- 1:50He asked a different question. Everybody else was asking, How
- 1:54do I get where I'm going? Feeny asked.
- 1:57What can Ioffer that makes picking me up a benefit to the
- 2:01driver? And he never stopped asking it.
- 2:04That same question is the one that built his fortune three
- 2:08years later when he found a duty free Shoppers Group.
- 2:11Instead of asking what can I sell, he asked who has a need
- 2:15Nobody's serving. He bought a nearly dead duty
- 2:19free company everyone had written off and turned it into a
- 2:22conglomerate. Same facts everyone else saw,
- 2:26but a different question. Because it's hard to see what
- 2:30you're not looking for and easy to see what you are.
- 2:34The better story to tell yourself is stop broadcasting
- 2:38where I'm going and start broadcasting what I bring.
- 2:42You don't have to be rare to be chosen, you just have to be
- 2:46useful. Don't only ask what do I want,
- 2:49ask what can Ioffer that makes what I want easy for someone
- 2:54else to give me. Change the question and the same
- 2:57Rd. you've been standing on turns into a ride.
- 3:00Tell me a story of usefulness to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:05Send someone a text with your offer.
