- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
- 0:03Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to pick up
- 0:06where he left off with the deposition given to the
- 0:09OIG inspectors by co slash Lieutenant slash Captain Jermaine Darden. Question,
- 0:20and then I'm assuming there was another administrative lieutenant, you
- 0:24know when Epstein was discovered, and I think that was
- 0:26a little bit after a six am correct answer. Yeah,
- 0:30that was actually the operations lieutenant, which was redacted, Lieutenant redacted.
- 0:35He informed me where I guess he became aware of
- 0:38the incident. I believe at six point thirty that morning redacted? Okay,
- 0:42So I already asked the operations lieutenant. It says the
- 0:45Operations Lieutenant and the Activities lieutenant are responsible for day
- 0:49to day operation and maintaining order for three shifts, and
- 0:52an emergency preparedness lieutenant a collateral duty responsibility in the
- 0:57event of an emergency incident such as five bombs, threats,
- 1:01et cetera. So during these instances, was there an emergency
- 1:04preparedness lieutenant? Answer? Yes? Question who was that answer? I
- 1:09believe it was Lieutenant redacted? Question Lieutenant redacted? Okay, was
- 1:14Lieutenant redacted off that day though, Answer Lieutenant redacted was.
- 1:18I believe at that time his schedule, the Shoe lieutenants
- 1:22were not working on the weekends. They worked Monday through Friday.
- 1:26I believe it was seven thirty eight to four. So
- 1:29Lieutenant redacted was on military he was on leave. He
- 1:32had military leave because he had his monthly drill that
- 1:36he would attend. Question do you know if he was
- 1:39on leave both on August ninth and August tenth or
- 1:42August tenth, you said he wouldn't have worked, But was
- 1:45he on the ninth? Answer? Let me see here, question
- 1:49and you can just say was he on the schedule? Answer? Yes,
- 1:53So I mean, right here, I'm looking at the roster
- 1:55for Friday, August ninth, and I believe that the Shoe
- 1:58lieutenant post was left assigned for that Friday. Question all right,
- 2:03So that would just lead us to believe that he
- 2:05was not there. Correct answer, that's correct, He was not there.
- 2:09No question. Great? And what his position had been like,
- 2:12you know, was there someone that's placed in the acting
- 2:14role when he's gone. Answer? Normally, due to our staffing
- 2:19at MCC at that point or at that time, we
- 2:21tried to ensure that you know, looking over the roster
- 2:24to try to ensure that someone was within there the
- 2:27supervising unit. But again, due to the shortage of lieutenants
- 2:30at the time, I had to as monitoring or looking
- 2:33at the roster, I would try to place areas of importance,
- 2:36so operations lieutenants ensured that the activities lieutenant was filled
- 2:41and at that time that particular day, he wasn't on
- 2:44the roster or that post was left unassigned. Question and
- 2:48that post, like you said, isn't assigned on the weekends.
- 2:51Answer no question so Saturday, great answer, No, it's not.
- 2:57Question all right? Redacted advise that his staff provides special
- 3:00considerations for high profile inmates. It deemed appropriate and designated
- 3:05as such. In order to ensure an inmate is providing
- 3:09or provided with proper care. The facility evaluates the inmate
- 3:13using several measures, including mental, physical, medical, psychological, and sexual assault,
- 3:19victim or predator assessments. Since different inmates are admitted with
- 3:23different criteria, appropriate housing varies. Question all right. Redacted interacted
- 3:30with inmate Jeffrey Epstein on approximately three occasions at MCC,
- 3:34all of which Epstein maintained a pleasant demeanor. Answer correct question.
- 3:39During the first instance, Epstein asked redacted who he was,
- 3:42and redacted or responded by introducing himself and explaining his
- 3:46position at the jail. During another instance, redacted explained to
- 3:50Epstein the policy regarding meals during attorney sessions and made
- 3:54certain Epstein was accommodated with water, visits to the restroom, etc.
- 4:00So did he receive and I know it's my understanding
- 4:02that he was most days in with his attorney. Answer yeah,
- 4:06so most days from the time that the attorney visitation
- 4:09would open, it made Epstein was in the area primarily
- 4:12until it closed. Question all right, And that's where it
- 4:16says Epstein spent most of the day with his defense
- 4:19counsel and was brought down as soon as the attorney
- 4:22visit opened. So would that be like Monday through Friday?
- 4:26Answer no, that he gets cut off by the guard.
- 4:31That's seven days a week. That's seven days a week.
- 4:34Question all right? So was it almost every day? Answer
- 4:38every day? Question okay? And was his food brought to
- 4:42him there? Answer? No, question okay, how would he obtain
- 4:46his food? Answer? Now, as far as food, I know,
- 4:50and like I said, it's been a while. Normally inmates
- 4:53do not eat while they're on visitation. They're provided water,
- 4:57they're provided to go to the bathroom. The mate, you know,
- 5:00is afforded the meal. However, I believe that he was
- 5:03offered meals from the vending machine. I'm not sure. I
- 5:07can't remember as far as because I didn't remember. There
- 5:10was an issue with that, and I know we tried
- 5:12to accommodate or address it. I just can't remember what
- 5:14was done. Question would the attorneys be allowed to bring
- 5:18him in food? Answer? No? Question no answer, no, No
- 5:22outside food would have been allowed. Question okay, answer, so
- 5:29I can't tell you if he was actually getting a
- 5:31tray during that time. I can't remember, but I do
- 5:34remember there were conversations that and I know we did
- 5:37something in order to ensure that the inmate was provided
- 5:39some type of meal or whatever. I can't remember. Question sure,
- 5:44all right, that's fine. As far as the it mentions
- 5:47two visits, do you remember anything about the third visit
- 5:50that you made with Epstein? Answer? The third visit, so
- 5:53that night, that would be Friday, August ninth of twenty nineteen.
- 5:57I believe I had worked the day close to a
- 6:00It was eight or so. Question eight pm on August ninth,
- 6:04answer eight pm. Correct. So I was actually on my
- 6:07way and exited, you know, went and talked to the
- 6:10operations and activities lieutenants, you know, let them know that
- 6:13I was leaving for the day. And when I reached
- 6:15the elevator on the third floor, inmate Epstein was being
- 6:18escorted out of attorney visit by his unit manager. Question okay,
- 6:23and who is that? Answer? Which was I believe redacted?
- 6:29At which time I, you know, I said hello, how
- 6:32you doing, mister Epstein? And he was like okay. So
- 6:34we had to ask me and he said, Captain, is
- 6:37it okay if I get a telephone call? Now? Mind you,
- 6:40we had already discussed that when the inmate, we would
- 6:43reasonably attempt to always facilitate a phone call for the inmate,
- 6:47especially while being housed in special housing unit. So I
- 6:50said to the unit manager, mister adacted. I said, mister adacted,
- 6:54are you going to the shoe? He said yeah. I said, well,
- 6:57are you going to be able to monitor the call
- 6:59with the inmate? And he was like yeah, I got
- 7:01no problem with that. I said, well, I don't have
- 7:04a problem. Just make sure that you follow the protocols
- 7:07and the protocol is when that inmate is allowed to
- 7:10use the phone, that's to be monitored by staff, and
- 7:12the number and who they're talking to has to be
- 7:15placed on a log. Question okay. Answer, so I said,
- 7:21make sure that that takes place. I'm good with it.
- 7:24So that's when I got in the elevator and I
- 7:26exited the institution. Question all right, so this conversation happened
- 7:30with redacted in front of mister Epstein. Answer yes it did.
- 7:33Question okay, and that's the point where okay, so did
- 7:37you authorize that call to be made from the shoe?
- 7:40Answer yeah. Question was there a certain line that they
- 7:43should have used? Answer? Yeah, it's a secure line. You
- 7:46have two lines. You know. You can plug it into
- 7:49the outgoing and then it's the jack that's just for
- 7:52inside of the institution calls, or you can put it
- 7:55into the other jack, which allows those calls to be outgoing.
- 7:59Question would that be a legal line? Answer yeah, it
- 8:02would be just an out It would be an out
- 8:07an outline, and they're not recorded. Answer right. Question, and
- 8:11that's why you said make sure that it's on a
- 8:14recorded line. Answer correct. Question did you tell him at
- 8:17all to document what was being said? Answer. Yeah. I
- 8:22told him to ensure that he was present that the
- 8:24protocol is because I asked him, I said, look, I said,
- 8:27make sure that you're present at the phone call. I said,
- 8:30make sure that it's logged. And when you dial the numbers,
- 8:33the number you have to like stay on the line
- 8:36and said, he says, well, I want you to call
- 8:38my attorney. Who is your attorney? So on and so forth. Okay,
- 8:42when they answer the phone, I said, this is mcc
- 8:45my name is so on and so on. I have
- 8:47a call for Jeffrey Epstein. What is your name and
- 8:49what is your title? So we can log it and
- 8:53at the time that's it. It's logged. And then you
- 8:56give the phone to the inmate and then you sit
- 8:58there while they're on the phone. Question and do you
- 9:01know if that was done? Answer again, I don't know.
- 9:04I just insured that's it, Like I said, That's why
- 9:07I asked him. I said, are you going to the
- 9:09shoe and are you going to be able to monitor
- 9:11the phone call? Question? But you don't know if you
- 9:14wrote anything up? Answer, I don't know what he did.
- 9:18Question Okay, answer. I just ensured that I told him
- 9:23what needed to be done. Question and what would happen
- 9:25with that log then after he logged it, answer the
- 9:28phone call or the log question like after he documented it, answer,
- 9:34it would be maintained just in the log. It wouldn't
- 9:36be brought for anyone's review, you know, it would just
- 9:39be hey, did you did Epstein get a call? Yeah?
- 9:42I could tell you, so I could pull a book
- 9:45and then I can tell you and look that when
- 9:47he was given the call. Question So if it goes
- 9:51into a specific Epstein file, answer, yeah, no, it wouldn't.
- 9:55It doesn't go in a file. It goes into a book.
- 9:57It goes into a book for monitored calls for all
- 10:00the inmates and legal calls. Question for all inmates. So
- 10:04not just Epstein he gets cut off, That is correct question.
- 10:09It would be a green log book, you know. And
- 10:11it would have the name of the inmate and who
- 10:13they called, the number, the time. I don't know if
- 10:16the duration is on there, but it will have the
- 10:18person who also monitored the call, so you know all
- 10:21that information. But it wasn't something like a form that
- 10:24was filled out and then placed in the inmates file
- 10:27or a central file. No, it wasn't like that question.
- 10:31And do you know if that log in the book
- 10:33was filled out. Answer, I don't know. Question, you don't know, Okay,
- 10:37when you met with Epstein on that night? How was
- 10:40his demeanor? Answer? It was fine. He was cheerful. You know,
- 10:45you didn't look disheveled he felt because I asked him,
- 10:47I said, how you doing? You all right? He said, man,
- 10:52I'm good. Everything is fine. And I said, did you
- 10:54have a good visit? And he said, yeah, everything's fine. Cat.
- 10:58I said, all right, man. Question okay, answer you know.
- 11:02Question no cause for concern? Answer no, because every time
- 11:06we had that interaction it was always pleasant. It was
- 11:09never negative. Question okay. It says Redacted was made aware
- 11:14of the possibility that Epstein would be housed at MCC
- 11:17in advance of Epstein's arrival. Redacted was not present when
- 11:21inmate Epstein was admitted into the facility. Epstein was thoroughly
- 11:25vetted to determine if he was fit for general population,
- 11:29and was ultimately placed in the special housing unit. MCC
- 11:33places inmates under three categories of close supervision, one dry
- 11:37cell for those at risk of smuggling contraband, two psychological observation,
- 11:42and three suicide watch. Question is all of that correct?
- 11:47Answer yes at that time. Yes. Question okay, So who
- 11:52made the decision to place him in the special housing
- 11:54unit specifically and why? Answer okay. So basically, the ration
- 12:00of replacement of the inmate in the special housing unit
- 12:03would have been a decision ultimately made by the warden.
- 12:06They would have took the criteria of the inmate. They
- 12:09would have been like, okay, well, what's his risk? You know,
- 12:12what would be the likelihood of him being endangered if
- 12:15he would be placed in general population? His culpability? Can
- 12:18he cope with being inside of a general housing unit?
- 12:23So the determination was made between medical health services, Oh,
- 12:27I'm sorry, health services, psychology and the warden. Question and
- 12:31who was the warden at the time? Answer it was
- 12:35mister redacted? Question and do you know how to spell
- 12:38the last name? Answer it would be redacted question, Thank
- 12:44you sir. Are there any other secure housing units within
- 12:47the MCC Answer there's only one secured housing unit, that's
- 12:51the Shoe. But however, we do have ten South and
- 12:55ten South is for I believe those who are SAM
- 12:58inmates and those inmates or under specialized monitoring, which comes
- 13:02from I believe it's from the Attorney General. I believe
- 13:06I can't remember who the person that's over it, but
- 13:08I believe it was the Attorney General or whoever makes
- 13:11the determination for those Sam's inmates. Question okay, and what
- 13:15does Sam stand for? Answer? I believe I can't remember.
- 13:20Question okay, but it's like Sam's SAMs. Answer that is correct.
- 13:26Question okay, like an acronym though answer it's an acronym.
- 13:31All right, folks, we're gonna wrap up right here, and
