Working in emergency dispatch meant getting to know certain callers.

One elderly man had become especially familiar. He lived alone and regularly called to report someone outside his windows, on his porch, or moving around his house. Officers checked again and again but never found anyone there.

As his memory began to decline, those calls became easier to explain. Then they suddenly stopped. Weeks passed without hearing from him.

Until one morning, his address appeared on the dispatcher’s screen again. She answered expecting the same familiar voice and another report about the mysterious man…
