- 0:57like a podcast is able to be so spread across.
- 1:00So far, So wherever you are, friend, I am so delighted that
- 1:05you have pressed on play and that you and I are going to be
- 1:09able to read God's word together.
- 1:11What a wonderful world we live in that this is even a thing.
- 1:16So having said all of that, let us do it.
- 1:19Let us continue the story where Samuel has been given his orders
- 1:24from the people and God has said go ahead, find them a king.
- 1:28And that's exactly what he does today.
- 1:30So join me, friends, as we read the next chapter in the story.
- 1:33In First Samuel Chapter 9, there was a wealthy, influential
- 1:49man named Kish from the tribe of Benjamin.
- 1:52He was the son of Abel, son of Zeror, son of Becharath, son of
- 1:58a fire of the tribe of Benjamin. His son Saul was the most
- 2:03handsome man in Israel, head and shoulders taller than anyone
- 2:08else in the land. One day Kisha's donkeys strayed
- 2:12away and he told Saul, take your servant with you and go look for
- 2:17the donkeys. So Saul took one of the servants
- 2:20and travelled through the Hill Country of Ephraim, the land of
- 2:24Shalasha, the Shalom area and the entire land of Benjamin.
- 2:29But they couldn't find the donkeys anywhere.
- 2:32Finally they entered the region of Zaf and Saul said to his
- 2:37servant, Let's go home. By now my father will be more
- 2:41worried about us than about the donkeys.
- 2:43But the servant said, I've just thought of something.
- 2:47There is a man of God who lives here in this town.
- 2:50He is held in high honour by all the people because everything he
- 2:55says comes true. Let's go find him.
- 2:58Perhaps he can tell us which way to go, but we don't have
- 3:01anything to offer him, Saul replied.
- 3:04Even our food is gone and we don't have a thing to give him.
- 3:09Well, the servant said, I have one small silver piece.
- 3:13We can at least offer it to the man of God and see what happens.
- 3:18In those days, if people wanted a message from God, they would
- 3:21say let's go and ask the seer for profits Used to be called
- 3:25seers. All right, Saul agreed.
- 3:29Let's try it. So they started into the town
- 3:33where the man of God lived. As they were climbing the hill
- 3:36to the town, they met some young women coming out to draw water.
- 3:41So Saul and his servant asked, is the seer here today?
- 3:45Yes, they replied, stay right on this road.
- 3:49He's at the town gates. He has just arrived to take part
- 3:53in a public sacrifice up at the place of worship.
- 3:56Hurry and catch him before he goes up there to eat.
- 3:59The guests won't begin eating until he arrives to bless the
- 4:02food. So they enter the town and as
- 4:06they pass through the gates, Samuel was coming out toward
- 4:09them to go up to the place of worship.
- 4:12Now the Lord had told Samuel the previous day about this time
- 4:17tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin.
- 4:21Anoint him to be the leader of my people, Israel.
- 4:26He will rescue them from the Philistines.
- 4:28For I have looked down on my people in mercy and have heard
- 4:32their cry. When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord
- 4:36said, That's the man I told you about, He will rule my people.
- 4:43Just then Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, can
- 4:47you please tell me where the seer's house is?
- 4:50I am the seer, Saul replied. Go up to the place of worship
- 4:55ahead of me. We will eat there together, and
- 4:58in the morning I'll tell you what you want to know and send
- 5:02you on your way. And don't worry about those
- 5:04donkeys that were lost three days ago, for they have been
- 5:08found. And I am here to tell you that
- 5:11you and your family are the focus of all Israel's hopes,
- 5:16Saul replied. But I'm only from the tribe of
- 5:20Benjamin, the smallest tribe in Israel, and my family is the
- 5:25least important of all the families of that tribe.
- 5:28Why are you talking like this to me?
- 5:31Then Samuel brought Saul and his servant into the hall and placed
- 5:35them at the head of the table, honouring them above the 30
- 5:38special guests. Samuel then instructed the cook
- 5:42to bring Saul the finest cut of meat, the peace that had been
- 5:46set aside for the guest of honour.
- 5:49So the cook brought in the meat and placed it before Saul.
- 5:53Go ahead and eat it, Samuel said.
- 5:56I was saving it for you even before I invited these others.
- 6:01So Saul ate with Samuel that day.
- 6:05When they came down from the place of worship and returned to
- 6:08town, Samuel took Saul up to the roof of the house and prepared a
- 6:12bed for him there. At Daybreak the next morning,
- 6:16Samuel called the Saul. Get up.
- 6:19It's time. You are on your way.
- 6:22So Saul got ready and he and Samuel left the house together.
- 6:26When they reached the edge of town, Samuel told Saul to send
- 6:30his servant on a head. After the servant was gone,
- 6:35Samuel said Stay here, for I have received a special message
- 6:40for you from God, Lord, thank you for your love
- 6:55for us. I love this chapter that the
- 7:00author describes, that when you look down upon your people, you
- 7:04look down with mercy. Thank you that this is your
- 7:08posture. You look at us and your heart is
- 7:13filled with mercy for us from your throne.
- 7:17Yeah, you see everything and yet you still choose love and
- 7:23justice and mercy, for that is who you are, God.
- 7:28You are a just God of mercy and love and such righteousness.
- 7:34And so we just praise you, our wonderful God, our mighty King,
- 7:41and our loving Saviour. Thank you for being all that you
- 7:47are for us, and we pray these things to you in the saving name
- 7:54of Jesus. Amen.
