Transcript
- 0:03Happy Thursday morning, everybody at Mom's house in
- 0:08North Carolina. What you doing, Mama?
- 0:14Hey, there she is. This is coffee with Kenny.
- 0:20Yeah. Hey everybody.
- 0:22Yep. So Mom, mom is a complete
- 0:26badass. She is not to be messed with.
- 0:32Are you're not to be messed with?
- 0:33Are you mom? What you're not to be messed
- 0:36with. No.
- 0:40So when we raced, Mama, you know, raised us three boys, but
- 0:46she was a great powder puff racer.
- 0:48What what do you remember? What do you remember about those
- 0:51powder puff races when you won all those races?
- 0:53They. Didn't last long enough.
- 0:55Was a six laps. About.
- 0:59About, yeah. It was exciting.
- 1:01I can see why you guys get hooked on it though.
- 1:04Yeah, I can sure see why you get hooked.
- 1:07And then later on, you, hey, let me ask you a question.
- 1:14Do you feel like you gave up your career for us three boys?
- 1:19No. No.
- 1:21No, I would. I I've always been kind of open
- 1:24minded about, yeah, never driven in one particular area, just
- 1:30curious about a lot of areas, you know, just, but I enjoyed
- 1:35that a lot. How old are you now?
- 1:4087. The reason I asked for her age
- 1:44is you. You will not see a better
- 1:46looking physical specimen. 87 years old.
- 1:50Look here. Who gave you this Mom?
- 1:51Well. Thank you.
- 1:53Look at this. Hold on.
- 1:56That's bad ass right there. That's right.
- 2:00So yeah, I want to. I want to.
- 2:06I want to do as good as my mom does at 87.
- 2:11So how do you stay in such good shape?
- 2:16Well, I don't know it it, it just must be jeans because I, I,
- 2:22I'm very rarely sick. If I get a cold, which I've kind
- 2:27of got a touch of one, yeah, it lasts 2 days, then it's gone,
- 2:33then I'm OK again. But it's nice to have boys that
- 2:40are so thoughtful and kind, and I'm so grateful you guys turned
- 2:46out like you did. I love my Mama.
- 2:50You know why? Because I'm a spitting image of
- 2:53her. Whatever you don't like about
- 2:54me, you're going to have to put up because I'm just like her.
- 2:58Yeah. He's a little kinder though, I
- 3:01think if. You.
- 3:03If you cross me, I really don't like that I'm I'm straight out
- 3:09honest with my feelings and my words.
- 3:12They know this. I get in more trouble for
- 3:15telling the truth than I do. I don't lie because I, I, I
- 3:22don't like to lie. I, I, it's against my nature, I
- 3:26think. And, but Kenny's so sweet
- 3:30everybody. He is the way he is.
- 3:33He he is just from the heart. Michael is too rusty.
- 3:38You got to pull it out of him. We're all three of us a little
- 3:41different. A little different, yeah, you
- 3:44and Mike are closer in feelings and.
- 3:48When, when, when we were growing up.
- 3:50Rusty and Mike, you know, there's, there's an age
- 3:53difference. Rusty's seven years older than
- 3:55me. Mike's 4.
- 3:57So when, when I was growing up, you took me everywhere.
- 4:02Oh yeah, 'cause I couldn't go in the pits or things like that.
- 4:05So my Mama took care of me and they guess what else they did?
- 4:09Remember when Sue Sifford would pay me a dollar to shut up?
- 4:14On the trip to Rolla Rolla, MO from from Saint Louis.
- 4:20She would say Kenny. Sue Sifford from Saint Louis.
- 4:23She'd say, Kenny, I'll give you a dollar if you can shut up to
- 4:27the red, red barn. And was it Sullivan or Saint
- 4:30Clair? I said, and you know what I'd
- 4:32do? I'd shut up.
- 4:34And that's how that's how I learned how to make money.
- 4:37Shut up. And now I'm making money for
- 4:40talking well. I the one thing I keep thinking
- 4:45when we're talking like this, and you know what, I'm you might
- 4:49know what I'm going to say. For years, Kenny didn't give
- 4:54himself the credit he deserved. Through his career, through
- 4:58dealing with people, he was always, like most racers,
- 5:02obsessed with the fact that he didn't win a championship.
- 5:06Oh my God, look what he did. And Mike would say about that.
- 5:12He would say, well, there weren't that many people that do
- 5:17what you do either. Look what you've done.
- 5:19You know, he'd pump him up. And I always used to get so hurt
- 5:25that Kenny didn't give himself the credit he deserved.
- 5:30And I, I just knew he was going to end up very happy, very
- 5:37comfortable, very satisfied. And I think he's learned to live
- 5:42with the fact now that he didn't need a championship And he he's
- 5:48an all round damn near perfect kid.
- 5:53I have to say damn near because don't want to give him too much
- 5:57credit. So I have great, I have great
- 6:01NASCAR drivers and I'm not going to say their names.
- 6:05It's funny mom, when I do Kenny conversation, I'll I'll tell
- 6:09great drivers how good they are. Perfect, perfect.
- 6:13And then you know what happens, I'll say you won all these
- 6:16races. When I tell you that, what do
- 6:17you think about? And all these athletes, you
- 6:19know, they the thing they say, they go back to the races that
- 6:23they didn't win. I think, I think human beings
- 6:26are their own worst enemies. You know, they never celebrate
- 6:29the goodness. They always celebrate the
- 6:31Vadnais. Well, you did the same thing for
- 6:34years and years and years and and and I can't.
- 6:37That's competition, competition. Competition will kill you, Mom.
- 6:41So us, us humans, well, especially people that compete,
- 6:46we want to be the greatest of all time.
- 6:47It's like you, you don't want nobody to get you.
- 6:50You want to kick their ass. You want you want to be right
- 6:53about every damn thing. I mean, we all.
- 6:55I grew up in Baltimore. Now we're getting there.
- 6:58Now we're getting there. On the streets of South
- 7:01Baltimore and if you didn't stand up, you got knocked down.
- 7:07There you go. That was before I was 13 years
- 7:11old, so that early. Yes, you got to have it.
- 7:18You got to have it because they'll run all over your mom.
- 7:20They think they're going to get you and no, and like I tell
- 7:22everybody on coffee and kidding, you don't get me.
- 7:25It's because I learned from this one.
- 7:28But we have great conversation. You know, we, you and I talk
- 7:32about a lot of things and we work things out and I am lucky
- 7:36to have my Mama because she, she, she's just awesome.
- 7:40And she won a lot of races and she grew up with us and took
- 7:44care of us boys. I love you, mom.
- 7:46Thank, thank you for taking care of us.
- 7:49Yes, I'm, I'm a privileged and proud mom, no doubt about it.
- 7:54And I, I, I keep telling Kenny the the reason people you've
- 8:00become so popular is because you're honest, you're caring,
- 8:05you've got a good heart, You really are happy for these
- 8:09drivers. Well, it's, it's just the truth.
- 8:13He's happy for the drivers he interviews that have done well.
- 8:18And we, we celebrate their careers, you know?
- 8:20That's it, and they know he will not throw them under the bus.
- 8:25That's right. He will not do that and and he
- 8:28will he actually, you are all heroes to him and and there's no
- 8:34doubt about that. You all know that because you
- 8:37know Kenny now. Even though I'm awesome and I'm
- 8:40really good, all right, So every time I get to 8 minutes, mom see
- 8:46right there my clock 8I. Wondered how you did that?
- 8:50When I get there, I got to start ending coffee with Kenny because
- 8:54people are hyperactive nowadays and they, they usually watch us
- 8:58going to work. And when they start getting 8
- 9:00minutes, well, you, it used to be two minutes if you did a bit
- 9:04back in the day, like a year ago, I, I had to train everybody
- 9:07that I, I can't say what I want to say in 2 minutes.
- 9:11So we're at 9 minutes now and I love you.
- 9:14I love. You too, baby.
- 9:15You're. The best I'm going to pick up
- 9:17Kenny. I'm going to leave here.
- 9:18Go pick up Schrader. And Kenny was with his children
- 9:22last night, which was awesome. Sheldon and and Dorothy and I'm
- 9:27going to go pick up, straighten out and I will see you all at
- 9:29Rockingham, downtown Rockingham in the city Tonight.
- 9:33We're starting five to seven, then the Marshall Tucker Band
- 9:38and then tomorrow, Friday at 2O clock.
- 9:40So there's a look at my Mama. So if you ever want to get
- 9:44inside somebody's brain and go, why are they the way they are,
- 9:51say goodbye mom. Bye.
