Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There's meetings in Moscow. Putin has spoken. He says he
- 0:04Speaker 1: supports the ceasefire, but he sees a whole lot of
- 0:06Speaker 1: other stuff. We're joined now by Vincent mcavinie. Hello, Vincent,
- 0:10Speaker 1: good morning. What's going down.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Well, we're having to decrip what exactly Vladimir Putin means.
- 0:16Speaker 2: In the past twenty four hours, he's visited the Cursek
- 0:19Speaker 2: region of Russia, which has been held for several months
- 0:23Speaker 2: by Ukrainian forces, but they seem to be struggling to
- 0:26Speaker 2: keep the territory. Putin appeared very rarely for him, addressed
- 0:29Speaker 2: in military uniform, saying that now Russia had control of
- 0:34Speaker 2: its own territory. This was thought to be a sort
- 0:35Speaker 2: of key bargaining chip that Zelensky had in negotiations for
- 0:40Speaker 2: territory which Russia controls. Now, what we've heard in this
- 0:44Speaker 2: press conference, we know that this US envoy, having got
- 0:47Speaker 2: agreement from the Ukrainian team, was on its way to Moscow.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Putin has said that he agrees with peace proposal, but
- 0:54Speaker 2: says it needs to lead to an enduring peace. There
- 0:57Speaker 2: was some sort of diplomatic circus sire acts going on
- 1:01Speaker 2: in this press conference talking about the need to make
- 1:05Speaker 2: sure the underlying causes of the crisis are resolved for
- 1:08Speaker 2: that enduring peace. So it'll be up to the Trump
- 1:11Speaker 2: team to try to unpick what exactly that means. But
- 1:15Speaker 2: for now, the bombardment between the two nations continues, big
- 1:19Speaker 2: strikes on Moscow this week by the Ukrainians.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It's such a process, isn't it this. You have to
- 1:24Speaker 1: negotiate the negotiations, then you have to negotiate a ceasefire,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and then you can go and negotiate possible lasting peace.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Is Putin asking for too much too soon?
- 1:34Speaker 2: Well, I think he feels pretty emboldened at this point.
- 1:36Speaker 2: He's drawn barely a word of condemnation from the Trump
- 1:39Speaker 2: administration versus the treatment that Presidents Lensky and the Ukrainians
- 1:43Speaker 2: have faced. That's always worth reistrating that if Vladimir Putin
- 1:48Speaker 2: wanted to end this today tomorrow, he could do. He
- 1:50Speaker 2: could pull his forces out. It was his fault. He
- 1:53Speaker 2: invaded the territory, it was an act of war. They've
- 1:56Speaker 2: committed war crimes in the territory. So every once peace,
- 1:58Speaker 2: he could simply pull his troops back. But he's not
- 2:01Speaker 2: doing that. So we'll see where this goes now.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Now, I meanwhile, Donald Trump has written the EU with
- 2:06Speaker 1: a two hundred percent tariff. It's a big number. It's
- 2:09Speaker 1: on alcohol.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. So the EU was hit earlier in
- 2:14Speaker 2: this week by the latest round of Trump tariffs are
- 2:16Speaker 2: particularly on steel and aluminium are twenty five percent tariff.
- 2:21Speaker 2: They got hit by that, so they have struck back
- 2:25Speaker 2: with sort of retaliatory tariffs, but particularly citing sort of
- 2:30Speaker 2: US goods. So those were for instance, Harley Davidson motorbikes
- 2:34Speaker 2: and Bourbon of course, which is you know, American whiskey.
- 2:38Speaker 2: So the Donald Trump has now sort of responded to
- 2:41Speaker 2: that particular front, saying he's going to put a two
- 2:44Speaker 2: hundred percent tariff on alcohol from EU countries and of
- 2:47Speaker 2: course that will be you know, wines from France and Italy,
- 2:50Speaker 2: champagne as well spirits. I mean, it would be absolutely
- 2:54Speaker 2: drastic to the prices of those products which are big
- 2:58Speaker 2: EU exports. But also there is you know, high demand
- 3:00Speaker 2: and great love for in America as well.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, And I thank you for your time today,
- 3:05Speaker 1: Vincent McAvennie.
