- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Right Time, presented by PrizePix.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont E.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Jones. Thanks for listening.
- 0:10Speaker 1: We're here to get your podcast. Thanks for watching us
- 0:12Speaker 1: on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us. Give us
- 0:15Speaker 1: five stars. You only give us four stars. I'm inclined
- 0:17Speaker 1: to believe you are a hater. We got Deontay Lee,
- 0:20Speaker 1: an oranger, coming up, talking about some football.
- 0:23Speaker 2: But first, all right, Ryan.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I feel like, and hey, if I'm not giving you
- 0:28Speaker 1: enough credit, you let me know. But I don't feel
- 0:33Speaker 1: like you have passionate opinions about Babyface.
- 0:38Speaker 3: You know what this is?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you're breaking the triangle.
- 0:41Speaker 3: No, this is when Kobe goes like this.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Yeah, breaking the triangle.
- 0:45Speaker 3: You're breaking the triangle.
- 0:46Speaker 2: We're getting out of here. Okay, cool. Just wanted to
- 0:48Speaker 2: let you know it's okay, all right?
- 0:50Speaker 1: But I do want you to kind of stay on
- 0:52Speaker 1: a little bit as I give you a story because
- 0:55Speaker 1: it ties in to somewhat of a recurring theme of, okay.
- 1:00Speaker 2: So the other day I got.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Some email from this show on Complex and it's called
- 1:06Speaker 1: Worst Takes.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And they're like, come on and give your worst takes.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And I'm like, you know, I kind of spent a
- 1:13Speaker 1: long time not doing a lot of these appearances, perhaps
- 1:15Speaker 1: to my detriment in some ways.
- 1:17Speaker 2: So let me try to get out here, do a
- 1:19Speaker 2: little bit more. Right. And so I said, OK, cool.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But I mean, I don't think it's hard for you
- 1:23Speaker 1: to understand what the problem is that I would have
- 1:26Speaker 1: with this, which is.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I don't. think any of my takes are bad.
- 1:32Speaker 3: I mean that's kind of the whole idea is like
- 1:34Speaker 3: I think my opinions are good and I give them
- 1:36Speaker 3: to you because that's how good they are.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Right why would I give you why would I give
- 1:39Speaker 1: you rotten stuff I don't understand this like I don't
- 1:41Speaker 1: know who these people are I don't.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Go to the grocery store here here's some bad apples
- 1:45Speaker 3: yeah yeah.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Yeah so like I'm trying to think about like stuff
- 1:47Speaker 4: I thought in.
- 1:47Speaker 1: The past that like you know wasn't that big a
- 1:50Speaker 1: thing or whatever but okay I was wrong about Michael
- 1:53Speaker 1: Beasley over Derrick Rose for example right you.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Know like I was but I didn't I didn't feel
- 1:56Speaker 4: like that would have.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Anything so like I sit down and I talk to
- 2:01Speaker 1: the brother that's doing the show and I don't remember why.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Oh, I remember why.
- 2:07Speaker 1: It's because we had just, I think we had just
- 2:10Speaker 1: taped the ATLians episode and my man Wally had brought
- 2:14Speaker 1: up how I don't rock with babyface. And so I'm
- 2:16Speaker 1: trying to do my best to give my man a
- 2:18Speaker 1: good show, right?
- 2:20Speaker 2: Like I'm trying to do what I can to help him.
- 2:22Speaker 2: And then I'm like, oh yeah, that's right.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I got this baby face take that like people don't like, okay?
- 2:28Speaker 1: But the thing is, I've been offering this take in
- 2:31Speaker 1: public for like 15, 20 years.
- 2:34Speaker 2: This is nothing new, okay?
- 2:36Speaker 1: So I used to say it on the internet all
- 2:39Speaker 1: the time, but that was the old internet, okay? OK,
- 2:45Speaker 1: that was the Internet where you saw what I said.
- 2:48Speaker 1: If you followed me or perhaps somebody decided to share
- 2:53Speaker 1: it and we could have a robust back and forth.
- 2:55Speaker 2: But what's the big deal anyway?
- 2:56Speaker 1: Right. I hadn't thought about like what would happen if
- 3:00Speaker 1: I said it on the new Internet. I was like, oh,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I say this all the time. What's the thing?
- 3:03Speaker 2: Right. And so I said it also not considering. Right.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Who are my least favorite people in the world?
- 3:12Speaker 3: People who are passive aggressive.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yes, that is correct. But as a profession.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Oh, social media managers. Yes.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Somehow I hadn't done the math on the fact that
- 3:26Speaker 1: this part was.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Going to hit socials. Okay. And look, they're doing everything
- 3:33Speaker 2: I always said.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Now, of course, the difference is the point of this show.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Is this sort of rage bait?
- 3:39Speaker 2: So I can't blame them. Right.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Like this is literally what they were supposed to do.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I just didn't really do the math on it. Next
- 3:45Speaker 1: thing I know, I'm getting text messages about the fact
- 3:50Speaker 1: text messages.
- 3:51Speaker 2: All right. That this has happened.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Somebody told me that what a boy to man was
- 3:57Speaker 1: in my comments going off. Yeah, that was like the
- 4:02Speaker 1: first thing I heard. It was like, tell me, tell
- 4:05Speaker 1: me you don't really believe this. I'm like, hell yeah,
- 4:06Speaker 1: I believe this. And what they were asking is, do
- 4:08Speaker 1: I believe that Babyface, well, I say it, I believe
- 4:11Speaker 1: that Babyface is a wildly overrated songwriter.
- 4:14Speaker 2: That is my belief.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I believe that this is one of those things, kind
- 4:19Speaker 1: of like Jason Witten is a Hall of Famer, That
- 4:22Speaker 1: if people keep saying it over and over and over again, it.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Just becomes an axiom of truth that.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Doesn't like really get scrutinized by anybody in any way.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And I just happen to disagree with this. And in fact,
- 4:38Speaker 1: fairly fervently. Ryan, now this is where, you know, you
- 4:42Speaker 1: can start Homer Simpson into the bushes because my people disagree.
- 4:45Speaker 1: really came down on me very harshly.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Even people I know.
- 4:50Speaker 1: 9th Wonder said that my tape was a reflection that, quote,
- 4:54Speaker 1: drugs are rampart, unquote.
- 4:57Speaker 2: R-A-M-P-A-R-T.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Yes, them drugs be in my house gallantly streaming. Now,
- 5:04Speaker 1: you understand, he root for Duke. So, like, we only
- 5:08Speaker 1: listen for so much to what's going on over there.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I wound up in a trick bag in this because
- 5:13Speaker 1: the boy Kev on stage made a video refuting what
- 5:17Speaker 1: I said. And I can't get in no back and
- 5:19Speaker 1: forth with the nicest man in the world.
- 5:21Speaker 2: One of them church ladies go come up and tell.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Me, your mama is a Jezebel or something like that, right?
- 5:28Speaker 2: Like, I don't need that. Some dude popped up in my,
- 5:32Speaker 2: because the weirdos.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Are popping up on Instagram, in my stranger Instagram inbox.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And let me find what this dude said to me.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I want to make sure I get this word right.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Hey, ho-ass possum face N-word. Baby face will never be weird.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Will never be overrated.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Sorry, weird reminded me of this other woman who was
- 5:55Speaker 1: also in my stranger box who sent me a message
- 5:57Speaker 1: that said, quote, you're a weirdo with the middle finger.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I'm a weirdo. A total stranger.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Hopped up in my shit in the name of baby face.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But hold up, screw. I'm the weirdo.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Some dude told me that this was a, quote, Whitlock-esque take.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And I was like, actually, let me tell you something
- 6:20Speaker 1: I am very certain of about Whitlock. Whitlock loves Babyface.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Whitlock is an R & B slow jam dude from
- 6:26Speaker 1: Indianapolis where you can find the Kenny Babyface Edmonds freeway.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Is that a real thing?
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. It's incredible.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Anyway, that dude had to apologize. Because he was Whitlock
- 6:41Speaker 1: in this analogy.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Never mind.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Never mind the whole, like, everybody gets to have an
- 6:53Speaker 1: opinion sort of thing, right? Of course.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Forget that part. I'm going to just say this.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Because I hadn't planned to shake the table. So I
- 7:01Speaker 1: didn't really get to discuss this, right? And I want
- 7:04Speaker 1: to be very clear. I know people will not believe me.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I told you about the people in my stranger inbox. Otherwise,
- 7:10Speaker 1: I promise you, I have not read a single comment
- 7:14Speaker 1: other than 9th Wonder saying that drugs are rampart. And
- 7:17Speaker 1: the only reason that I read that is because somebody
- 7:19Speaker 1: sent it to me, right? I honestly, I don't even
- 7:23Speaker 1: know what Boy to Man said about my take.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I truly have no idea, okay? This is all I'm saying.
- 7:34Speaker 1: People talk about Babyface as a songwriter on the upper
- 7:41Speaker 1: echelon of all-time songwriters, okay?
- 7:46Speaker 2: Now, for the white people who are eavesdropping.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Right now, they talk about him like he's on a
- 7:50Speaker 1: Lennon-McCartney songwriting kind of level.
- 7:53Speaker 3: I understand that reference.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, right?
- 7:56Speaker 4: Like, they talk about him, and I'm really kind.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Of staying within a pop vein, right?
- 7:59Speaker 1: So not even going to, like, a Bob Dylan hyperliterary
- 8:02Speaker 1: type of thing, right? But Babyface has written a bunch
- 8:04Speaker 1: of hits. I think a lot of those hits are...
- 8:07Speaker 1: Terrible songs, okay? That is my read. So I'm going
- 8:11Speaker 1: to give it to you in a couple different ways
- 8:14Speaker 1: to think about it. If we're going to put him
- 8:16Speaker 1: in this upper echelon, then we're talking about him with
- 8:19Speaker 1: guys like Stevie Wonder. We're talking about him with guys
- 8:23Speaker 1: like Prince, guys like Curtis Mayfield, Smokey Robinson, Holland.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Doja Holland, so forth and so on, right?
- 8:31Speaker 1: Like, if we're saying that he's one of the greatest
- 8:34Speaker 1: songwriters of all time, we're putting him up there on
- 8:36Speaker 1: that level, and that's the part, that I push back against, okay?
- 8:40Speaker 1: So let's say we just drop in super dope songs
- 8:45Speaker 1: that people have written, okay? And it's like, they go
- 8:48Speaker 1: and then Babyface goes, okay? We will spend the coming
- 8:52Speaker 1: month celebrating songs in the key of life. By the way,
- 8:54Speaker 1: episode with Spencer on that coming up, okay? We're gonna,
- 8:57Speaker 1: you know, that's about to happen. Songs in the key
- 9:00Speaker 1: of life has as. Okay, Stevie drops as. Your turn, Babyface.
- 9:08Speaker 2: What you got?
- 9:09Speaker 1: Like if you're the super babyface fan, what are you
- 9:12Speaker 1: coming with next? This morning, I just listened to Little
- 9:17Speaker 1: Red Corvette.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Okay. Your turn, babyface. What do you have that's on
- 9:25Speaker 2: the level of that?
- 9:26Speaker 1: What bar do you have that's on the level of
- 9:28Speaker 1: body like that ought to be.
- 9:29Speaker 2: In jeans versus on the verge of being obscene? What
- 9:33Speaker 2: you got for that?
- 9:34Speaker 1: Babyface once wrote a song called I'll Make Love to
- 9:36Speaker 1: You that was high school dance music.
- 9:38Speaker 2: And I know that because I was in high school.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Play that shit for a girl and she'll pat you
- 9:42Speaker 1: on the back.
- 9:44Speaker 2: All right?
- 9:45Speaker 1: Curtis Mayfield has People Get Ready. Curtis Mayfield has Pusha Man.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Your goal, Babyface. What, you putting Tenderoni up against that stuff?
- 9:55Speaker 1: Is that what we're doing?
- 9:56Speaker 2: Are you really? No. It's just.
- 10:00Speaker 1: that caliber of guy. Hell, let go even of Michael Jackson.
- 10:03Speaker 1: And I'm not talking about the record. I'm talking about
- 10:05Speaker 1: the songs, lyrically, right?
- 10:07Speaker 2: Drop Billie Jean in there. Your turn, babyface. No, no, no. Like,
- 10:13Speaker 2: imagine for a second. Just imagine this, okay?
- 10:17Speaker 1: Imagine that Your woman, like, anniversary's coming up or whatever, okay?
- 10:24Speaker 2: And you want to write her a poem.
- 10:27Speaker 1: But you ain't got that in you, right? Like, that's
- 10:30Speaker 1: just not your bag. And your scruples aren't that high.
- 10:34Speaker 1: So you want to get somebody to write a poem
- 10:37Speaker 1: for you that you can pass off as your own.
- 10:40Speaker 1: You know, think about, like, high school, something somebody would
- 10:42Speaker 1: do in high school, right? And so you're like, hey, man,
- 10:45Speaker 1: I need you to write this poem, man. I give
- 10:47Speaker 1: you $ 100.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Can you write something for me? Cool.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And they'd be like, cool, give me a couple days,
- 10:52Speaker 1: I'll come back. And then in a couple days, they
- 10:54Speaker 1: come back. And he's like, I got the poem.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I was like, oh shit, man. How'd it go? You
- 11:02Speaker 2: mean the world to me. You are my everything.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I swear the only thing that matters, matters to me.
- 11:12Speaker 2: What the fuck does that mean, Kobe Bryant? Only thing
- 11:15Speaker 2: that matters, matters. Hey, man, look, I ain't going to
- 11:19Speaker 2: lie to you, man. I paid you $ 100 for this.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I'm going to need a little bit more. Can you
- 11:23Speaker 2: go back and put a little bit more on that?
- 11:27Speaker 2: Say less. Come back the next day. All right. I've
- 11:31Speaker 2: got something else on it. Well, go ahead. Let me
- 11:32Speaker 2: hear it. All right.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Now, you heard the first part. You mean the world
- 11:36Speaker 1: to me. You are my everything. I swear the only
- 11:40Speaker 1: thing that matters, matters to me.
- 11:43Speaker 2: But hold up. Hold up. This is what you paid for.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Oh.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby. Because you mean so much
- 11:52Speaker 2: to me. You telling me you wouldn't want to get
- 11:56Speaker 2: your fucking money back? That song was a hit.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Right?
- 12:04Speaker 2: This is what I be talking about. Right? Right?
- 12:10Speaker 1: Now, the song sounds excellent. The verse is actually a
- 12:14Speaker 1: bit better than that chorus I gave you. I'm just saying,
- 12:18Speaker 1: you're not going to tell somebody that that's one of
- 12:20Speaker 1: the greatest songwriters that ever lived. That's not how that goes. Like,
- 12:23Speaker 1: the Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis stuff that they write, I
- 12:25Speaker 1: find to be more interesting than the L.A.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Reid, Babyface stuff. A lot of that stuff, they jams.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Like, that Bobby Brown stuff he does, they jams because
- 12:32Speaker 1: Bobby Brown is making it jam. You know what the
- 12:35Speaker 1: best written song on that album is? My Prerogative, written
- 12:38Speaker 1: by Teddy Riley. That shit was written well enough that
- 12:42Speaker 1: Britney Spears could dare try to make it work.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Right?
- 12:46Speaker 1: My, My, My by Johnny Gill. Again, imagine I paid
- 12:49Speaker 1: you some money. You came back with My, My, My, My, My, My, My.
- 12:53Speaker 1: That's all you got. Johnny Gill is carrying that to
- 12:57Speaker 1: the finish line.
- 12:58Speaker 2: It is not a byproduct of Gray's songwriting.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Now, what I realized about me, I was talking to
- 13:04Speaker 1: a friend of mine, and she and I were going
- 13:05Speaker 1: back and forth about this, because she couldn't believe I
- 13:08Speaker 1: said this. And she said it dawned on her where
- 13:12Speaker 1: I was coming from. And this is it, for me,
- 13:14Speaker 1: at least. Them Babyface songs is boring.
- 13:19Speaker 2: They just are. And when I say that, this is
- 13:22Speaker 2: what I mean.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I don't find that when he does songs that they
- 13:27Speaker 1: come from a place of any, like, imaginations. Like I mentioned,
- 13:30Speaker 1: Little Red Corvette. You can go through line by line.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I understand this woman's get down. I know where she stays.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I know the emotions of this other dude. This whole
- 13:39Speaker 1: story comes together with clear ethos and mentality and everything
- 13:43Speaker 1: else within two verses. And this crazy scene has been
- 13:49Speaker 1: laid out with these really interesting people in them, right?
- 13:55Speaker 2: I don't get that when I hear Babyface, right?
- 13:57Speaker 1: Like, talking about Az by Stevie, like the crazy use
- 14:00Speaker 1: of metaphor and simile and all these things he puts
- 14:02Speaker 1: together and everything else as he builds up to this
- 14:03Speaker 1: hyperbolic thing. I'm not getting that from Babyface. I'm not
- 14:06Speaker 1: getting no song like no Smokey Robinson song. There's no
- 14:08Speaker 1: tracks of my tears out of that catalog out of there.
- 14:11Speaker 1: It's not happening because I find that... The music is
- 14:15Speaker 1: absent of like a certain imagination and just a certain
- 14:19Speaker 1: feeling of like kind of fun and even like mischief
- 14:22Speaker 1: to a degree that I think is important. Like, let's
- 14:24Speaker 1: be real about this. The boy kept on stage. I
- 14:26Speaker 1: didn't see the video, but they told me that it
- 14:28Speaker 1: started off with end of the road.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And that's exactly my point.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Like, I can't imagine throwing End of the Road back
- 14:36Speaker 1: out here and thinking that's a refutation of my point. Like,
- 14:39Speaker 1: the beat is cool or whatever it is, but man,
- 14:41Speaker 1: that's not a, for me, that's not like an exciting record.
- 14:44Speaker 1: That don't have the vibes that I'm looking for coming
- 14:46Speaker 1: off of that. And the truth is, if Babyface's songs
- 14:49Speaker 1: was really that good, I don't know if Kev would
- 14:52Speaker 1: have been allowed to listen to them back in the day.
- 14:55Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Like, I'll make love to you.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Is a sex song for church and not like one
- 15:01Speaker 4: of them songs where it could be about Jesus.
- 15:02Speaker 2: But, you know, would you just switch out, baby? No, no, no.
- 15:07Speaker 4: I mean, you could listen to that in church and
- 15:09Speaker 4: nobody would feel.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Any sort of conflict.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And that doesn't seem possible to me, except it just
- 15:14Speaker 1: ain't like. I don't find it. to be fun music.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I'll make another point, and.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I think it's interesting about a lot of these rappity
- 15:24Speaker 1: rap fans, which is their expectations and demands of R &
- 15:28Speaker 1: B singers are way lower than their demands of people
- 15:30Speaker 1: when they write raps. Like, if somebody was writing raps
- 15:33Speaker 1: with the kind of simplicity and triteness of a lot
- 15:36Speaker 1: of these Babyface records, I assure you, 9th Wonder would
- 15:39Speaker 1: not be telling me that drugs are Rampart. As somebody
- 15:43Speaker 1: who's talked to that man about rap before, you feel me? Like,
- 15:47Speaker 1: I promise you, I promise you it would not.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Go that way.
- 15:51Speaker 1: But I also need to be fair because I just
- 15:53Speaker 1: said that thing about baby face and like not having
- 15:55Speaker 1: no imagination to his music.
- 15:58Speaker 2: And while I think that.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Is overall true, it's not always true. Because let me
- 16:06Speaker 1: tell you something.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Ain't nobody.
- 16:10Speaker 1: You got to have a serious imagination. To come up
- 16:14Speaker 1: with this song. And you know what song I'm talking about, fellas.
- 16:19Speaker 2: That's right.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Soon as I get home from work. This man say
- 16:25Speaker 1: he gonna buy clothes, cook dinner, pay the rent. Soon
- 16:30Speaker 1: as he gets home from work. Where do you work?
- 16:32Speaker 2: Clearly you don't have that much to do. You must
- 16:36Speaker 2: own the whole, does your dad own the factory? And
- 16:39Speaker 2: you just got a no-show job? That whole thing, man, that's, that's, that's,
- 16:46Speaker 2: That is imagination, okay? I'll be perfectly clear with you
- 16:51Speaker 2: about it from there.
- 16:52Speaker 1: But for me, for me, I went and asked Chad
- 16:56Speaker 1: GBT to pull me up a list because I was like,
- 16:58Speaker 1: maybe I'm being too hard on him. And I was like,
- 17:01Speaker 1: them two Tevin Campbell joints, I actually think those are
- 17:03Speaker 1: very well-written songs, including I'm Ready, which is fascinating because
- 17:06Speaker 1: he says that's the first song he ever wrote.
- 17:09Speaker 2: He's still trying to get back to that one. That
- 17:13Speaker 2: might be the number one.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I see people who tell me, well, like how well
- 17:16Speaker 1: he writes songs for women, which I think is interesting.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Go listen to giving him something he could feel or
- 17:21Speaker 1: go listen to Let's Do It Again and then put
- 17:24Speaker 1: them songs, them baby face songs you talk about next
- 17:27Speaker 1: to those or put them next to Manic Monday or whatever.
- 17:29Speaker 1: And if your response to me is, well, you can't
- 17:31Speaker 1: compare him to Prince of Stevie Wonder, that's the point
- 17:34Speaker 1: I'm trying to make.
- 17:36Speaker 2: My man got beats. He got jams.
- 17:39Speaker 1: But I feel like his lyrics over his beats, which
- 17:42Speaker 1: are very good, is like a.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Was it Wagyu? Is that how you say it? The burger?
- 17:48Speaker 3: Wagyu, but it's close enough.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:49Speaker 1: It's like Wagyu with a slice of American cheese. Just
- 17:56Speaker 1: kind of plain and uneventful. Now, if you got some
- 18:00Speaker 1: other spices around that, you can make it work. That
- 18:02Speaker 1: American cheese won't get in the way. You understand what
- 18:05Speaker 1: I'm saying?
- 18:06Speaker 2: But... When they have.
- 18:07Speaker 1: The cheese cup, wherever they do the cheese cup every year,
- 18:11Speaker 1: I guarantee you that Kraft single does not win, okay?
- 18:16Speaker 1: But he can do the job. And I'm not saying
- 18:18Speaker 1: my man is not capable of doing the job. I'm
- 18:22Speaker 1: just saying, if we putting him in the class of
- 18:25Speaker 1: the greatest songwriters of all time, there's a couple tiers
- 18:29Speaker 1: of guys that he's not on the.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Same level of. That's just how I feel.
- 18:37Speaker 1: OK, but since the Internet going nuts, I figured I
- 18:42Speaker 1: should at least let you hear where it is that
- 18:45Speaker 1: I was coming from.
- 18:47Speaker 2: On this matter.
- 18:52Speaker 1: All right, we are back coming to us live from
- 18:54Speaker 1: the Ranger, sunny San Diego, California.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Boy, Deontay Lee. And we're going to get to the football, but.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I know you had to chuckle because we go back
- 19:05Speaker 2: a while in the content since. And I really forgot
- 19:08Speaker 2: that people got so mad about this. They're so hot.
- 19:11Speaker 2: They're so mad at me. They don't want to see
- 19:13Speaker 2: anything I ever say again.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Hey, Kenny Edmonds got shooters. I think that's what I
- 19:17Speaker 3: texted you last night.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Like, again, this is... I tell you, the only time
- 19:21Speaker 2: it's been worse. And I was being far less... I
- 19:26Speaker 2: don't know the right word.
- 19:27Speaker 1: But I made the point that I would not want
- 19:30Speaker 1: Sade to sing at my funeral.
- 19:32Speaker 2: I enjoy... her music immensely.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I've spent lots of money on vinyl of hers, but
- 19:40Speaker 1: you know, far as like actual factual singing goes.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:45Speaker 3: We don't need her with eye on the Sparrow. No, no, no, no.
- 19:48Speaker 2: It's vibes, right? It is vibes, it's a certain thing.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Bruh, I went on a date two days after that
- 19:55Speaker 1: and the girl showed up in a Sade t-shirt.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Ah, damn.
- 19:59Speaker 2: The internet, in fact, somebody hit me up today and
- 20:02Speaker 2: was like, you ought to tell them how you feel
- 20:03Speaker 2: about Sade. And I said, I love Sade.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Right.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I don't love baby face. But still, man, it's like,
- 20:11Speaker 2: people ain't, you can't even, they can't. Anyway, I've been
- 20:14Speaker 2: saying this Babyface thing for like 15 years. Who knew?
- 20:16Speaker 3: At least. At least, man. Like, this goes back to...
- 20:21Speaker 3: early Twitter argument days, early evening Jones days.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Yes, long time.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I felt this a very long way. But, hey, man,
- 20:29Speaker 1: this NFL season is getting interesting. This is the first
- 20:32Speaker 1: time that we have done a full show since the
- 20:36Speaker 1: shocking victory of the Bears of Chicago over the Eagles
- 20:41Speaker 1: of Philadelphia.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Shout out to you, Case Keenum, right? Like, that was
- 20:45Speaker 2: a great commercial for Big Brain Ben.
- 20:47Speaker 1: It's like, look, man, if you can just hold it
- 20:48Speaker 1: together and get out here and do what I set
- 20:50Speaker 1: up for you, Anybody, you know, even a caveman can.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Do it, right? On the other side, Jalen Hurts.
- 20:56Speaker 1: And look, after this baby face thing, I feel like
- 20:59Speaker 1: I need to be kind of careful what it is
- 21:01Speaker 1: that I say about Jalen Hurts.
- 21:03Speaker 2: But at the same time, that did not look good.
- 21:07Speaker 3: It didn't look good. I would tell you to tread
- 21:08Speaker 3: carefully because he also got the cues riding behind him.
- 21:11Speaker 3: All right. So now we got a very specific faction
- 21:14Speaker 3: of people who will be riding in your mentions. If
- 21:17Speaker 3: you run a foul of them, but no, I mean,
- 21:19Speaker 3: it looked like, it looked like everything that God, I
- 21:23Speaker 3: hate to even bring this back up. Cause I know
- 21:24Speaker 3: it's going to happen to my mentions. It sounded less
- 21:27Speaker 3: Monday night looked a lot like what AJ Brown was
- 21:29Speaker 3: talking about. Not liking about the offense, right? Where, Oh yeah.
- 21:33Speaker 3: We add all this great stuff in the off season.
- 21:36Speaker 3: And we're supposed to be, you know, this Shanahan McVay
- 21:38Speaker 3: esque offense. And we're going to be layered with all
- 21:41Speaker 3: these different runs and play actions and throwing the ball
- 21:43Speaker 3: in the middle of the field. And then you're watching
- 21:45Speaker 3: in the second half and balls are being thrown up
- 21:47Speaker 3: the sideline. And it's Devontae Smith, go be a hero.
- 21:51Speaker 3: It's Jalen Hurts patting the ball in the pocket, you know, waiting.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Guys are open, not seeing the football. It was a
- 21:58Speaker 3: lot of that again. And this was another week where
- 22:01Speaker 3: the run game was okay, but not 2024 good. And,
- 22:05Speaker 3: you know, this just raises the question again, if you
- 22:08Speaker 3: have to have a run game that looks like to
- 22:10Speaker 3: the 2024 Eagles in order for you to compete for
- 22:12Speaker 3: a championship, What is that actually saying about your passing game?
- 22:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:16Speaker 3: And I think that those questions will remain until we
- 22:19Speaker 3: really see things coalesce for Philadelphia's offense.
- 22:23Speaker 2: How do we have something like this with them every
- 22:28Speaker 2: single year, even the Super Bowl year where they got
- 22:32Speaker 2: to the Super Bowl and one of the most dominant.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Performances that we have ever seen? It should they should
- 22:38Speaker 1: not be so entertaining. and so good at the same time,
- 22:42Speaker 1: but they're not like entertaining because they're good.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Right. It's just always something happening.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Well, and I would say that like Monday was kind
- 22:50Speaker 3: of a regression for her. It's like, I thought the
- 22:51Speaker 3: first two weeks there were things on the tape that
- 22:54Speaker 3: looked like, okay, this is somebody who is, who is
- 22:57Speaker 3: clearly internalized some of the critique that he might've been
- 23:00Speaker 3: hearing from within the building. Some of the things that
- 23:03Speaker 3: they felt like he needed to work on. He was
- 23:05Speaker 3: trying to operate the offense and, within the structure of it.
- 23:08Speaker 3: I actually thought the second half against the Titans, he
- 23:11Speaker 3: looked more like the version of the quarterback he needs
- 23:14Speaker 3: to be for that kind of Shanahan type of offense
- 23:17Speaker 3: to operate well. And then Monday happened. And now you're
- 23:20Speaker 3: just kind of right back to where are you telling
- 23:22Speaker 3: me as the level of competition goes up that you're
- 23:25Speaker 3: going to be more susceptible to kind of falling back
- 23:28Speaker 3: into old habits. And it's not like it was a
- 23:30Speaker 3: disaster game, but there were just so many missed opportunities,
- 23:33Speaker 3: I thought, from this offense and from this passing game
- 23:35Speaker 3: specifically that I guess the bears defense that we know
- 23:39Speaker 3: is not good at defending the past. Cause it has
- 23:41Speaker 3: not been good for the entire time. The bitch Johnson's
- 23:44Speaker 3: been there. I'm still just trying to figure out why
- 23:47Speaker 3: it is that this offense struggles to find a rhythm
- 23:49Speaker 3: in the passing game outside of just looking at the
- 23:52Speaker 3: quarterback and some of the missed decisions that could have
- 23:54Speaker 3: been made.
- 23:55Speaker 2: And look, they better figure it out.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Cause the way I see it and you tell me
- 23:59Speaker 1: if I'm wrong here, this is a, you have no
- 24:02Speaker 1: excuse to not win your division sort of situation, right?
- 24:06Speaker 1: The Cowboys brought to make a wish foundation back. I
- 24:09Speaker 1: suppose that that could get better. They got a brand
- 24:11Speaker 1: new coordinator, right? Like there's room for growth and improvement.
- 24:15Speaker 1: They're okay. But at the same time, they're always going
- 24:17Speaker 1: to give up a gang of points. The Giants, I
- 24:20Speaker 1: think we can safely say are finished. Unless JJ McCarthy
- 24:23Speaker 1: pulls off and one of the more unlikely turnarounds that
- 24:26Speaker 1: we've seen in quite a while.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Washington may be better than one in two would indicate
- 24:31Speaker 2: and they beat Seattle, but I don't think, You can
- 24:34Speaker 2: beat Seattle because it's the NFL and you're an NFL team.
- 24:37Speaker 1: But I didn't come away from that. You know, Marcus
- 24:40Speaker 1: Mariota at quarterback.
- 24:41Speaker 2: I know they got Jalen.
- 24:42Speaker 1: They got Jane Daniels out there and some kind of
- 24:43Speaker 1: brace on his elbow.
- 24:44Speaker 2: And I'm like, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
- 24:46Speaker 3: We don't need to do that. Yeah, we ain't got
- 24:48Speaker 3: to do that.
- 24:49Speaker 1: No, no, no, no. Like, look, man, he's done his part.
- 24:51Speaker 1: He's shown he's willing to do whatever it takes for
- 24:53Speaker 1: the team. Now you do your part and you get
- 24:56Speaker 1: in there. Quite honestly, I don't understand what the point
- 25:00Speaker 1: is of having your mama at practice every day if
- 25:02Speaker 1: she going to let you go out there like that.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Like, that's the whole thing. Your mama's supposed to stop. Hey, coach, coach, coach.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I think J.D. 's, you know, I don't think today
- 25:12Speaker 2: is the day.
- 25:13Speaker 3: He might need a little time. Listen, man, as a
- 25:15Speaker 3: high school football coach, I know that feeling very well.
- 25:18Speaker 3: You take a peek out in them stands, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 3: and you see mom or dad hanging out, and you
- 25:24Speaker 3: decide that you're going to get involved with the offensive
- 25:25Speaker 3: line drills. You're just trying to avoid eye contact. You
- 25:28Speaker 3: know what that conversation's going to be.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Yeah, J.D., come over here. Come over here for a second.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Let me look at. Coach, are you sure? Not my baby.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Not my baby.
- 25:41Speaker 2: And you know what? If your mama's still allowed.
- 25:44Speaker 1: To pull up, that's what your mama should do. Your
- 25:47Speaker 1: mama has the veto power. This is what it should be.
- 25:50Speaker 1: But otherwise, no, I don't think they have a chance.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Philadelphia should walk to this.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Philadelphia also, somewhat curiously, has a 14-point.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Negative differential at this point. They have beaten the Titans,
- 26:04Speaker 1: and they played some bums.
- 26:05Speaker 2: The first week, too.
- 26:06Speaker 3: And the Commanders.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Yeah, the Commanders. Bum-ish.
- 26:09Speaker 1: So this hasn't been great. This could be one of
- 26:14Speaker 1: those seasons. Absolutely. The year before they won the Super Bowl,
- 26:18Speaker 1: remember they had one of those epic collapses with a
- 26:21Speaker 1: much more talented team.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Yes. I think we would say than this one.
- 26:25Speaker 3: I would say if you are an Eagles fan, you're
- 26:27Speaker 3: now looking at next week's game against the Rams is,
- 26:30Speaker 3: not an inflection point, but that is going to be
- 26:31Speaker 3: the week that tells you a lot about who this
- 26:33Speaker 3: team really is supposed to be this season, because you
- 26:36Speaker 3: got to score to keep up with LA. If there's
- 26:39Speaker 3: one thing that is for sure, outside of whatever that
- 26:42Speaker 3: debacle was in Australia, you know that Matthew Stafford in
- 26:45Speaker 3: this offense, basically no matter how many receivers are actually
- 26:48Speaker 3: on the active roster come game day, they are going
- 26:50Speaker 3: to put points on the board and you got to
- 26:52Speaker 3: deal with 99 and Trent McDuffie and all the other
- 26:55Speaker 3: guys that they have, and Jalen Watson and that, and
- 26:57Speaker 3: that good Rams defense, on the other side of the
- 26:59Speaker 3: ball as well, you're going to need Jalen Hurst to
- 27:02Speaker 3: be at his best. And if he's not, and if
- 27:03Speaker 3: this defense struggles, which I think quietly is not the
- 27:06Speaker 3: story today because the passing game was a little quiet
- 27:10Speaker 3: in a way that maybe we would be a little
- 27:12Speaker 3: more critical of Philadelphia's defense, giving up all them yards
- 27:15Speaker 3: in that efficient offensive day to case Keenum, a third
- 27:18Speaker 3: string quarterback on Monday night football. We need to see
- 27:21Speaker 3: this offense kind of at its best against the Rams, right?
- 27:24Speaker 3: Like if not, I think that the questions will definitely
- 27:27Speaker 3: ratchet up even more.
- 27:29Speaker 2: And guess who else need that win real bad? The Rams. Yeah.
- 27:34Speaker 2: All right.
- 27:35Speaker 1: This is a this is a for both teams. This
- 27:38Speaker 1: is where your season can get like a.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Little bit rocky. I feel like, though, like I feel like.
- 27:43Speaker 1: If the Rams went down to one in three, obviously
- 27:46Speaker 1: that would be bad, especially because their division is as
- 27:50Speaker 1: tight as it is at the top. You don't want
- 27:52Speaker 1: no parts of that. But at the same time, there's
- 27:53Speaker 1: something about me that feels like, okay, but maybe this
- 27:55Speaker 1: is still a little bit of a sturdier sort of situation.
- 27:59Speaker 1: I feel like the Eagles go down to two and two.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Maybe I'm being unfair, right? Maybe I'm projecting my own
- 28:03Speaker 1: shit upon them.
- 28:04Speaker 2: But I feel like if they come out barely winning
- 28:07Speaker 2: those first two games, They then come out and lose
- 28:10Speaker 2: these two again, especially if they lose this one at home.
- 28:12Speaker 2: It's going to get loud around them. Like, I feel
- 28:14Speaker 2: like one of the good things about being one of
- 28:16Speaker 2: the L.A. teams is it ain't never going to get loud. Like,
- 28:18Speaker 2: it might get a little tense at work, but it
- 28:20Speaker 2: ain't going to get loud like shit. L.A. don't even
- 28:22Speaker 2: know the Chargers ain't won a game yet. They don't
- 28:24Speaker 2: even know the Chargers started the season yet.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Lakers media day was on Monday.
- 28:28Speaker 2: L.A.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Has officially checked out on all things football until, you know,
- 28:34Speaker 3: until we get to All-Star break, you know. They'll check
- 28:36Speaker 3: back in after All-Star break to go see what the
- 28:38Speaker 3: standings ultimately were on the season and then they'll formulate
- 28:41Speaker 3: their takes and reverse engineer the season from there. So yeah,
- 28:44Speaker 3: I think you, if you are in LA, the heat
- 28:46Speaker 3: is definitely lower. And I think in Philadelphia, and this
- 28:49Speaker 3: is maybe just endemic to the fact that it's Philly
- 28:51Speaker 3: and people there, everything about Philadelphia and all sports is
- 28:54Speaker 3: always kind of teetering on the brink of unhinged, if
- 28:57Speaker 3: not totally unhinged, you do have the Rams and you
- 29:00Speaker 3: have the Jaguars. And I think Philadelphia fans will correctly
- 29:03Speaker 3: identify those teams as You know, these are units that
- 29:05Speaker 3: have good offenses and that are very clear about where
- 29:08Speaker 3: they stand in the NFL hierarchy. And Philadelphia likes to
- 29:11Speaker 3: fashion itself as one of those teams amongst the NFL elite.
- 29:15Speaker 3: And if they come out and lay an egg the
- 29:17Speaker 3: way that they did on Monday, people will be freaking out.
- 29:19Speaker 3: And I'm not going to be the Eagles fan fighting
- 29:22Speaker 3: the battle, selling them that it's not that deep because
- 29:24Speaker 3: we've just seen seasons like this where things start going sideways.
- 29:28Speaker 3: And then they really start, you know, bottoming out happening far,
- 29:31Speaker 3: far too often for this team. And by bottoming out,
- 29:34Speaker 3: I mean, a very talented team ended up being a
- 29:36Speaker 3: disappointing 11-6 and getting blown out in the playoffs. I
- 29:39Speaker 3: think that they would like to avoid that this year
- 29:42Speaker 3: for the head coaches' job security sake, for the quarterback's
- 29:45Speaker 3: next contract sake, you know, and not to catastrophize, but
- 29:48Speaker 3: I do think that all those things will be in
- 29:50Speaker 3: mind for this team throughout the season and definitely over
- 29:54Speaker 3: the next couple weeks.
- 29:56Speaker 1: At their best, they were established the running guys and
- 30:00Speaker 1: You're talking now about doing that with a quarterback, with
- 30:03Speaker 1: a running back in his ninth year in the league.
- 30:06Speaker 2: You know, got miles on him. He had a.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Bunch of touches. He had so many touches in 2024, man.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Yeah, like, I don't know how we keep doing this.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Like, actually, the 49ers, because they played that Australia game
- 30:17Speaker 1: that I did not see, and then they played against
- 30:19Speaker 1: two sets of bums, so I did not watch, so
- 30:21Speaker 1: I don't know what McCaffrey's looking like over there, but
- 30:23Speaker 1: it's a similar situation to me, where it's kind of like, hey, guys, like,
- 30:26Speaker 1: we can't be betting on, we're just going to give
- 30:28Speaker 1: the ball to the running back. Like, McCaffrey so far
- 30:30Speaker 1: has 166 yards in three games.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Hey, man, you can do worse, but.
- 30:37Speaker 3: And I think there's an acknowledgement there that, you know,
- 30:39Speaker 3: they have Kalen Black as their backup running back and
- 30:42Speaker 3: he's gotten quite a few touches, you know, early in
- 30:44Speaker 3: the season, which is an acknowledgement of if we want
- 30:46Speaker 3: this man to be available to us in January, we
- 30:49Speaker 3: can't be riding them in September and October, right? And
- 30:52Speaker 3: what they've actually done is put more on the plate
- 30:54Speaker 3: of Brock Purdy, who has been producing at a pretty
- 30:57Speaker 3: high level. Whether or not you think that means that
- 30:58Speaker 3: he's a better quarterback than what you thought before is
- 31:00Speaker 3: a different conversation, but he's been producing. The same thing's
- 31:04Speaker 3: not happening in Philadelphia, right? We wouldn't even be talking
- 31:06Speaker 3: about Saquon Barkley if we had a more efficient day
- 31:10Speaker 3: from Jalen Hurts on Monday, right? We would all just
- 31:13Speaker 3: be saying, hey, at least the quarterback is figuring it out.
- 31:15Speaker 3: He'll hold down the fort, and then maybe you can
- 31:17Speaker 3: come back to the run game when you need it
- 31:19Speaker 3: later on in the year. Right now, the Eagles have
- 31:22Speaker 3: to basically put the most weight on their biggest playmakers
- 31:26Speaker 3: every week right now because the passing game is not

- 33:02Speaker 1: All right, we're back with Deontay Lee. Check him out
- 33:04Speaker 1: at the Wrangler. I just seized that about the Packers.
- 33:07Speaker 1: They just can't block, huh?
- 33:10Speaker 3: Not a soul.
- 33:11Speaker 1: That's the literal worst thing you can say. They just
- 33:14Speaker 1: can't block.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Bro, like, I was sitting watching on Thursday. First of all,
- 33:19Speaker 3: you get your ass beat by the Falcons. in Michael
- 33:21Speaker 3: Penix's first start.
- 33:23Speaker 2: At the crib.
- 33:24Speaker 3: At the crib, all right? You don't ever hear Lambeau
- 33:27Speaker 3: Field booing and getting agitated, all right? They are very
- 33:31Speaker 3: much happy-go-lucky. We're just glad we have our franchise type
- 33:35Speaker 3: of fan environment, and you could feel the angst coming
- 33:38Speaker 3: through the screen as you were watching. And I'm watching
- 33:41Speaker 3: the Falcons front that's missing basically their two or three
- 33:45Speaker 3: of their best defensive linemen basically every week this season
- 33:48Speaker 3: because you got the James Pearce dealing with, you know,
- 33:50Speaker 3: the conduct issues. And then you had Jalen Walker get hurt.
- 33:53Speaker 3: And they are just blowing plays up left and right.
- 33:57Speaker 3: And I'm looking at a guy I thought could have
- 33:58Speaker 3: maybe become an MVP this season just based off his
- 34:00Speaker 3: own talent and Jordan Love. And he's looking like, you know,
- 34:04Speaker 3: David Carr, you know, with the early Texans. Soon as
- 34:07Speaker 3: the ball hits his hands off the shotgun, he got
- 34:09Speaker 3: to move off the spot because the defensive tackle is
- 34:12Speaker 3: right in his lap. There is no play call to
- 34:15Speaker 3: mitigate offensive line issues this bad. And their bad offensive
- 34:20Speaker 3: line that they already had is hurt. So now you're
- 34:23Speaker 3: talking about playing twos and threes behind a set of
- 34:26Speaker 3: ones that weren't that good to begin with.
- 34:29Speaker 1: I feel like, and I know why you can't do this,
- 34:34Speaker 1: but you should be allowed to like postpone a game
- 34:37Speaker 1: or just be like, y'all got this one. Like, what's
- 34:40Speaker 1: the problem? We don't have enough guys that are capable
- 34:43Speaker 1: of blocking. Hey, hey, hey, hey, man, that's a big problem.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Right. Like that's a, we can't, We can't go out
- 34:49Speaker 2: here and play like this, can we?
- 34:50Speaker 3: Trying to appeal to the safety, player safety.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Yeah, like with their blocking situation, if this was a
- 34:55Speaker 2: game that involved children and things were looking as overwhelming
- 34:59Speaker 2: as they were, we'd start to run.
- 35:00Speaker 1: And clock everything else. We'd be like, hey, man, we
- 35:02Speaker 1: just can't. Come on, man, it's not fair to put
- 35:04Speaker 1: them out there. And they're just getting hit by other kids. Right.
- 35:08Speaker 3: That's when you start letting holding penalties go and the
- 35:10Speaker 3: refs looking at you like, hey, man, I'm just trying
- 35:12Speaker 3: to make it fair. I'm just trying to make it fair.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Vita, they about to be on the other side of
- 35:17Speaker 1: them this week. Like, Baker Mayfield's not going to play
- 35:21Speaker 1: this week for Tampa. And Tampa can still win this
- 35:24Speaker 1: game just because they still have guys that can maul you.
- 35:27Speaker 2: They got him and the other Aaron Donald, the fake
- 35:32Speaker 2: Aaron Donald.
- 35:32Speaker 1: The new but not improved Aaron Donald. Not saying anything
- 35:37Speaker 1: bad about him as a player, as a collegiate can't see.
- 35:41Speaker 1: But he's an undersized, whirling dervish defensive tackle from Pitt.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Yes. We know what the archetype is that he's trying
- 35:50Speaker 3: to fill, for sure. Yes.
- 35:52Speaker 2: But yeah, them against that interior Packers line?
- 35:55Speaker 3: It's bad news. I mean, honestly, the red alert had
- 35:59Speaker 3: gone up after the Jets game a week ago.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Where I thought that New York actually kind of thoroughly
- 36:05Speaker 3: outplayed them in Aaron Glenn's found a way to snatch
- 36:08Speaker 3: defeat from the jaws of victory at the end of
- 36:10Speaker 3: that game with his clock management and his approach to overtime.
- 36:15Speaker 3: And like you said, I mean, now you're dealing with
- 36:16Speaker 3: the great front seven and, you know, Todd Bowles is
- 36:18Speaker 3: going to send blitzes. How do you plan on your
- 36:20Speaker 3: quarterback being able to stay upright for four quarters, knowing
- 36:23Speaker 3: what you're about to get from them? If you're the
- 36:26Speaker 3: if you're the Cowboys now, you're looking at the Packers
- 36:28Speaker 3: game in a few weeks saying get right opportunity. We
- 36:31Speaker 3: might be able to go get us a few sacks, boys, right,
- 36:34Speaker 3: and get a chance for us to feel a little
- 36:35Speaker 3: bit better. And that's just not the way I expected
- 36:38Speaker 3: us to be talking about the Packers coming into the year.
- 36:41Speaker 3: And I think that this is me as a football
- 36:44Speaker 3: guy having to reset, right? I think I've heard Dominique
- 36:48Speaker 3: talk about this on your show and certainly on his show,
- 36:51Speaker 3: where you start getting excited about teams because of their skill, position, talent,
- 36:54Speaker 3: and their top-end guys and some young, exciting quarterback, and
- 36:58Speaker 3: you don't look at the trenches. And then after a
- 36:59Speaker 3: couple weeks, you're like, Why does this team not feel
- 37:02Speaker 3: as good as they are? And you watch the tape,
- 37:04Speaker 3: and it's because their quarterback is on their back every
- 37:07Speaker 3: other snap.
- 37:08Speaker 1: You know my story on that one. It was the
- 37:11Speaker 1: COVID Super Bowl.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Chiefs and the Bucs. Mine is Broncos, Panthers, and I
- 37:16Speaker 2: think we're going to be bringing up the same people. Yes,
- 37:18Speaker 2: it's the same thing. I had been picking the Chiefs
- 37:22Speaker 2: all week, and then I looked up and they ran
- 37:25Speaker 2: the offensive line. And I saw Mike Rivers.
- 37:28Speaker 1: And I said, I believe that I have made an
- 37:31Speaker 1: error in my prognostication.
- 37:34Speaker 2: It didn't take me any time past that to be like,
- 37:37Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Mike Rivers, by the way, who was the LVP of
- 37:42Speaker 1: the Broncos-Panthers Super Bowl, where Von Miller, who was on
- 37:45Speaker 1: the other side of him, was the MVP.
- 37:47Speaker 3: It was bad. That was bad. I don't know if
- 37:49Speaker 3: you've watched, I don't know if you've seen clips from
- 37:51Speaker 3: like Sunday Night Football where they'll pull up a bad
- 37:53Speaker 3: offensive line back when they had the PFF grades and
- 37:57Speaker 3: it would be dudes 36 out of 39 guards in
- 38:00Speaker 3: the league. 37th out of 45 tackles in the league.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Look, there is nothing, this is actually an underrated thing
- 38:08Speaker 2: in sports because you don't really see it that much,
- 38:10Speaker 2: but there are a few things wilder to watch than
- 38:13Speaker 2: a completely overmatched tackle. And it doesn't happen but that often.
- 38:20Speaker 1: But I remember the first time in my life that
- 38:22Speaker 1: I saw this happen. And I know this is really
- 38:25Speaker 1: for only the old players who are going to remember this.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I believe it was the year 1991, the year that
- 38:33Speaker 1: Washington had the incredible team. But Tennessee, going into that
- 38:38Speaker 1: draft that year, Tennessee had two offensive tackles. I feel
- 38:41Speaker 1: like they went back to back in the first round.
- 38:44Speaker 1: One of them went to Tampa. His name was Charles McCray.
- 38:47Speaker 1: And the other one was named Anton Davis, and he
- 38:50Speaker 1: was the right tackle, and he went to the Eagles.
- 38:52Speaker 1: And it was a Monday night game, and they had
- 38:54Speaker 1: him on the other side.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Of Charles Mann. And Charles Mann just ate him alive
- 39:04Speaker 2: all game long. And you just, it's over and over
- 39:08Speaker 2: and over again. However you want it. And it was 91.
- 39:10Speaker 2: It was that year. It was 91.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Ate him alive. There is the Thanksgiving Day game. where
- 39:16Speaker 1: Reggie White just destroyed rookie Larry Allen at left tackle.
- 39:21Speaker 1: And he was, this is the, Reggie White is that
- 39:24Speaker 1: might be the greatest ever and we just don't talk
- 39:25Speaker 1: about it anymore.
- 39:26Speaker 3: No more, yeah.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Reggie White was taking Larry Allen and I don't care.
- 39:30Speaker 1: how young he was, he was still Larry Allen size.
- 39:33Speaker 1: And we're just hitting him with that hump move.
- 39:37Speaker 2: John Madden looked like he had never seen him before.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Because Madden had that clicker. That was the thing people
- 39:40Speaker 2: didn't get about John Madden is that John Madden was
- 39:42Speaker 2: better at using the tech. than anybody going to the
- 39:45Speaker 2: replay and the.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Telestrator but that clicker that clicker always went to the
- 39:49Speaker 1: right spot right back and it was just reggie white
- 39:52Speaker 1: just my favorite reggie let me think my favorite reggie
- 39:58Speaker 1: white highlight i figure you might actually be able to
- 40:01Speaker 1: guess it because it's the one that jumps out better
- 40:03Speaker 1: than any.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Of them uh is this uh this one he's in
- 40:07Speaker 3: green bay he is in green bay I feel like
- 40:11Speaker 3: I can't see the opposing team.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Minnesota.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm looking at the camera angle.
- 40:16Speaker 2: It involves two Hall of Famers. It involves two Hall
- 40:19Speaker 2: of Famers.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Somehow, Dennis Green had called some play that involved Chris Carter.
- 40:28Speaker 1: moving in line and being asked to block Reggie White.
- 40:33Speaker 1: I don't think it was a one-on-one block of Reggie
- 40:36Speaker 1: White because they didn't fire Dennis Green, but somehow Chris
- 40:40Speaker 1: Carter wound up matched up with Reggie White and Reggie
- 40:43Speaker 1: White literally threw him into Warren Moon for the sack.
- 40:49Speaker 3: That shit could have been a four-on-one. The fact that
- 40:51Speaker 3: Chris Carter was involved would have made it the wrong call.
- 40:56Speaker 1: And they said Reggie White would be on the other
- 40:58Speaker 1: side of you saying that God has ordained this to
- 41:01Speaker 1: take place.
- 41:02Speaker 3: I can't imagine something more terrible to hear.
- 41:04Speaker 2: No, no.
- 41:06Speaker 1: I told you I talked to somebody that was around
- 41:08Speaker 1: the Rockets after Olajuwon became Hakeem.
- 41:11Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Right after he got to age back on it. And
- 41:15Speaker 1: they said he used to tell the refs.
- 41:17Speaker 2: God will judge you for this. They're like, what?
- 41:19Speaker 1: Right. Who are you talking to right now?
- 41:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 41:26Speaker 3: We just out here hooping right now, man.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Right. These cats that's talking shit to you, but in
- 41:30Speaker 2: God language? Oh, man. People see through that. They still
- 41:35Speaker 2: taking you up and they still taking it with the disrespect.
- 41:39Speaker 3: You can't hide this behind something holy. I know exactly
- 41:42Speaker 3: what you mean.
- 41:43Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 41:45Speaker 3: And I know the old you. I know how to
- 41:47Speaker 3: translate this in old you language.
- 41:51Speaker 2: I want to switch gears a little bit. Buffalo, I
- 41:54Speaker 2: feel like, has the potential to end New England's season.
- 41:57Speaker 3: I would say so. I would say so, at least spiritually.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's in Buffalo. The Chargers had a chance
- 42:03Speaker 1: to get one, but apparently they're sorry. Like, flatly sorry.
- 42:10Speaker 1: They're probably going to be 0-4.
- 42:12Speaker 3: I checked out after the Raiders game, but then I'm
- 42:16Speaker 3: sitting there watching, and I'm like, okay, you're up four
- 42:18Speaker 3: in the turnover margin. I don't know why this game's close,
- 42:21Speaker 3: but you must be outplaying this team.
- 42:24Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no. No, no, no. It was
- 42:27Speaker 2: close because they sorry. Yeah.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Buffalo just was kind of sleepy for a game, and
- 42:33Speaker 3: then woke up in the fourth quarter and was like.
- 42:34Speaker 2: That's right.
- 42:35Speaker 3: We are much better than these guys. All we got
- 42:37Speaker 3: to do is wait for them to give the game
- 42:39Speaker 3: right back to us, and they will.
- 42:40Speaker 2: And they did. And they did.
- 42:42Speaker 1: But I'm a little doom and gloom over here about
- 42:45Speaker 1: Drake May. You got any optimism?
- 42:48Speaker 3: Not right now. I think I could play the game
- 42:52Speaker 3: that some of my buddies in the millennial media football
- 42:57Speaker 3: guys do, where you can line up all the snaps
- 43:00Speaker 3: on all 22 and say, well, which one is actually
- 43:03Speaker 3: this guy's fault? And we could play that game all
- 43:06Speaker 3: damn day. And I will probably find plenty of reasons
- 43:08Speaker 3: to say, Hey, there's context here. There's context here. You
- 43:12Speaker 3: have to think about what the defense is doing here.
- 43:16Speaker 3: And it's really hard to do that right now. When
- 43:17Speaker 3: you just turn it a ball over left and right, bro.
- 43:19Speaker 3: Like they're just, there comes a certain point in time
- 43:22Speaker 3: and maybe it's just the coaching me. There comes a
- 43:24Speaker 3: certain point in time where you just got to say,
- 43:25Speaker 3: protect the fucking ball, okay? Get me to the next play.
- 43:29Speaker 3: I was just telling this to a quarterback the other day.
- 43:32Speaker 3: Your most important job is to get our offense to
- 43:35Speaker 3: the next play with the ball in our hands. And
- 43:37Speaker 3: when you're throwing the ball to blanketed receivers in the
- 43:40Speaker 3: back of the end zone before halftime to their best athlete,
- 43:44Speaker 3: you are not doing your job as a quarterback. When
- 43:47Speaker 3: you got a wide receiver that is being shoved to
- 43:49Speaker 3: the sideline and you still throw it his way and
- 43:52Speaker 3: Jerrion Jones picks it off, That's a you problem. That
- 43:55Speaker 3: ain't a play call problem.
- 43:57Speaker 2: You say hold the domino, right?
- 43:59Speaker 1: That's your thing. Just hold the domino, right? Make sure
- 44:02Speaker 1: we got the end of this round. We still go
- 44:04Speaker 1: ahead and domino. And look, this is one thing for
- 44:06Speaker 1: Drake May. You mentioned the play caller. No one's going
- 44:09Speaker 1: to blame him.
- 44:11Speaker 2: No.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Not while you're playing like this. Yeah, and especially not
- 44:14Speaker 1: with that franchise. That is an absolute made man in
- 44:18Speaker 1: the capacity. Talk about Josh McDaniels. If he's the head coach,
- 44:22Speaker 1: you can blame him for everything and it will probably
- 44:23Speaker 1: be his fault.
- 44:24Speaker 2: But as the.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Nobody's going to say this is on him.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Whether it is or not, it's going to be on you.
- 44:36Speaker 1: And they gots to figure this out. Vrabel definitely needs
- 44:39Speaker 1: him to figure this out because then we're going to
- 44:41Speaker 1: remember I mean, I guess the way I put that,
- 44:46Speaker 1: it sounds like we ain't never forgot.
- 44:48Speaker 2: We just wait. I do wait to bring it up.
- 44:51Speaker 2: I'll be like, ooh, there's a chance. Let's throw it
- 44:53Speaker 2: out there right now.
- 44:54Speaker 3: I can't imagine sitting in the quarterback meeting room with
- 44:57Speaker 3: the head coach and you're like, look, bro, they've been
- 45:00Speaker 3: leaving me alone for a little bit. I need you
- 45:02Speaker 3: to protect this ball. I'm going to get me a dub.
- 45:04Speaker 2: We almost there. We almost there.
- 45:06Speaker 3: These questions is going to come back if we don't
- 45:09Speaker 3: get right.
- 45:10Speaker 2: We can get there.
- 45:11Speaker 3: To me, and this has been something to me with
- 45:13Speaker 3: Drake May back on the turnover thing that I've been
- 45:16Speaker 3: kind of noting, even last year when things were going
- 45:19Speaker 3: well and he actually seemed to keep the interceptions down
- 45:21Speaker 3: while they were being explosive. If you go back from
- 45:25Speaker 3: 2024 till now, when he was drafted, he is tied
- 45:28Speaker 3: for the third most turnovers of any quarterback in the league.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Sam Dron was first with 38, Baker Mayfield the second
- 45:34Speaker 3: with 37, and he's tied with Geno Smith with 34.
- 45:38Speaker 3: That's just not the way that we talk about elite quarterbacks.
- 45:41Speaker 3: You should not be way up there in turnovers. And
- 45:44Speaker 3: if you are, you bet it better be by everything
- 45:47Speaker 3: else has to be way. Yes, exactly. You're scrambling better
- 45:50Speaker 3: be amazing. And it was last year. You better be
- 45:52Speaker 3: explosive in the passing game. And he was last year.
- 45:54Speaker 3: And now that we're regressing a little bit in that,
- 45:57Speaker 3: and you're seeing that you don't have AJ Brown to
- 45:59Speaker 3: be your security blanket. So it was really just you
- 46:01Speaker 3: out there. And when it's just you, we watch and
- 46:04Speaker 3: you give the ball to the opposing team. It's a problem.
- 46:07Speaker 3: It's a huge problem. And I don't know. I wouldn't
- 46:10Speaker 3: necessarily say that like he's broken or has the yips.
- 46:13Speaker 3: I would say that that's a little dramatic, but it is,
- 46:16Speaker 3: it is getting hard for me to say that's the
- 46:17Speaker 3: case much longer.
- 46:19Speaker 1: I'm going to switch gears because Dominique is already completely
- 46:23Speaker 1: out on the Cowboys. So, you know, you may be too,
- 46:27Speaker 1: but I don't know that about you yet. I, they
- 46:30Speaker 1: had the chance to win that game against the Ravens,
- 46:32Speaker 1: but I've watched them win that, lose that game so
- 46:34Speaker 1: many times in the last 30 years that I didn't even,
- 46:35Speaker 1: I was like, Hey.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Man, sometimes you lose. That's just what it is. But
- 46:39Speaker 2: what do you think about them?
- 46:39Speaker 1: They're playing against the Texans who are definitely fighting for
- 46:42Speaker 1: their lives in that game. And it kind of feels
- 46:46Speaker 1: like a CJ can't get buckets in this game.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Then buckets are just not there to be gotten.
- 46:52Speaker 3: I think that that's really it. I really think that's it.
- 46:54Speaker 3: I mean, the giants walked the ball up and down
- 46:57Speaker 3: the field against his defense with ease. Baltimore basically had
- 47:01Speaker 3: whatever they wanted on offense in that game on Sunday.
- 47:05Speaker 3: And I would say, I mean, Washington was moving the
- 47:08Speaker 3: ball just fine until Jaden Daniels blew his elbow, right?
- 47:11Speaker 3: So this is not necessarily a new thing that just
- 47:15Speaker 3: happened last week where now we're asking questions of their defense.
- 47:18Speaker 3: This has been really a two, three-year-long thing going back
- 47:21Speaker 3: to when Dan Quinn was still in Dallas, that they
- 47:24Speaker 3: just don't have the guys to be able to play
- 47:26Speaker 3: the level of defense that you need to to be
- 47:28Speaker 3: a true contender. So yeah, if you're Houston, if you're
- 47:31Speaker 3: D'Amico Ryans, and you're trying to make sure that that
- 47:33Speaker 3: seat don't get warm at all, You need C.J. Stroup
- 47:36Speaker 3: to show up and go get you 250 yards and
- 47:38Speaker 3: two touchdowns at least. Just give me something solid. You
- 47:43Speaker 3: would like to see your offensive line actually keep your
- 47:45Speaker 3: quarterback upright. And I think if you are Dallas, you
- 47:48Speaker 3: got to be looking at this game like, if we
- 47:50Speaker 3: don't get this one, man, all the good vibes, all
- 47:53Speaker 3: the people who were talking about us being sneaky contenders
- 47:56Speaker 3: this year, the chances for us to be looked at
- 47:59Speaker 3: as a team that's kind of bounced back after all
- 48:01Speaker 3: the people that we've added. on defense and bringing in
- 48:04Speaker 3: Christian Parker, who's supposed to be this big Fangio guy,
- 48:06Speaker 3: all that gets washed out if they don't handle business
- 48:09Speaker 3: on Sunday.
- 48:10Speaker 1: Hey, man, is Dak Prescott basically another run of Tony
- 48:14Speaker 1: Romo where they kind of had 20 years of the
- 48:16Speaker 1: same really good quarterback right up until you really need it, really,
- 48:23Speaker 1: really need it?
- 48:25Speaker 3: I think it's Tony Romo, and I would add to it,
- 48:28Speaker 3: It's a very Tony Romo-esque career arc where you're going
- 48:31Speaker 3: to look back at a three- or four-year window and
- 48:33Speaker 3: then like, damn, we actually had a shot to go
- 48:37Speaker 3: win a Super Bowl.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Could have been.
- 48:38Speaker 3: With this guy. And we just weren't ready. And then
- 48:41Speaker 3: once we decided to get ready, he started getting old, right?
- 48:44Speaker 3: And I think that, you know, he's still playing great
- 48:46Speaker 3: football right now, but you're talking about a guy who's
- 48:48Speaker 3: on the other side of 30 who's had lower body
- 48:52Speaker 3: injuries multiple times. This was right around that time with
- 48:55Speaker 3: Tony Romo where we started looking back and saying, Hey,
- 48:58Speaker 3: for all the hard times we gave him in his
- 49:00Speaker 3: late mid to late 20s, he was actually balling back then.
- 49:03Speaker 3: And the Cowboys should have been winning more games with
- 49:05Speaker 3: this dude. And for whatever reason, they just weren't able
- 49:08Speaker 3: to get it done. We might be looking at this
- 49:09Speaker 3: team in a very similar vein right now.
- 49:11Speaker 2: And look, that end.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Of that game, as I went back and checked it,
- 49:15Speaker 1: I cut them a lot of slack at first.
- 49:17Speaker 2: That was a bad look.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Like the way that that, to have a quarterback that,
- 49:21Speaker 1: not just that seasoned, he is in his 11th year
- 49:25Speaker 1: as a starter, but also that good.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Right. And the way it went in the end, or.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Just all of it was just kind of a, there's no,
- 49:34Speaker 1: we got this, Dak out here.
- 49:35Speaker 2: Like, that's the thing. Those Buffalo fans feel like that
- 49:38Speaker 2: when Josh Allen's out there.
- 49:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:40Speaker 2: Right. Even there are postseason hiccups for Lamar, but I've
- 49:43Speaker 2: watched Lamar walk them down far too many times in
- 49:47Speaker 2: those circumstances where it's like, nah, we got that dude
- 49:50Speaker 2: out there. The Cowboys have a very good quarterback.
- 49:53Speaker 1: That dude is a different space, but that dude is
- 49:57Speaker 1: kind of important to have.
- 49:59Speaker 3: Absolutely. And I think that, you know, like ultimately doesn't
- 50:03Speaker 3: really gave that game away in a way that they
- 50:05Speaker 3: did not have to. Right. Like, I don't understand. And
- 50:08Speaker 3: I appreciate Brian Schottenheimer coming back and trying to own
- 50:11Speaker 3: it and saying, hey, this is on me, you know,
- 50:14Speaker 3: saying too much to my quarterback, you know, over coaching him,
- 50:17Speaker 3: giving him too many answers to the test. And then
- 50:20Speaker 3: he makes a decision that I actually coached him to
- 50:21Speaker 3: make when we had an opportunity to score. At the
- 50:23Speaker 3: end of the day, man, you have four downs against
- 50:25Speaker 3: a team that has not been playing excellent defense for
- 50:27Speaker 3: the last couple of weeks. You could have put that
- 50:30Speaker 3: game away. That game should have absolutely been put away.
- 50:33Speaker 3: And I think that it's easy now because he decided
- 50:36Speaker 3: to just kick the ball out the back of the
- 50:37Speaker 3: end zone and give one of the three best quarterbacks
- 50:39Speaker 3: in football a chance to get you in field goal
- 50:42Speaker 3: range with one completion that people are talking more about
- 50:44Speaker 3: Schottenheimer as a game manager. But the real thing is
- 50:47Speaker 3: that sequence inside the five-yard line after a pass interference,
- 50:51Speaker 3: the game has to end there. If your quarterback is
- 50:54Speaker 3: the guy that you believe that he is, he doesn't
- 50:57Speaker 3: need overcoaching in that moment. You also have George Pickens. Man,
- 51:01Speaker 3: I don't give a damn unless they give you the
- 51:03Speaker 3: Calvin Johnson versus New Orleans punt coverage double team. That
- 51:08Speaker 3: guy is getting a shot at the football in that moment.
- 51:11Speaker 3: So to not do so, to not be able to
- 51:13Speaker 3: punch it in, I think that Dallas should be rightfully
- 51:17Speaker 3: disappointed that they gave a game away to a team
- 51:19Speaker 3: that didn't necessarily need to be in it to be
- 51:22Speaker 3: able to go and win that game with a game-winning
- 51:25Speaker 3: field goal.
- 51:26Speaker 1: All right, before we get out of here, this Minnesota
- 51:28Speaker 1: defense looks in– incredible how much offense do they need
- 51:34Speaker 1: i see they're trying to bring uh justin jefferson back
- 51:37Speaker 1: out here this week and that's not how high ankle
- 51:38Speaker 1: sprains work at least as far as i'm concerned but
- 51:41Speaker 1: certainly not a receiver yeah yeah yeah yeah like so
- 51:44Speaker 1: i mean they're playing miami and they got miami at
- 51:46Speaker 1: home so i mean i understand i feel like nfl
- 51:49Speaker 1: teams can beat nfl teams but fuck out of here
- 51:51Speaker 1: right um how much yeah how much offense does minnesota
- 51:56Speaker 1: need to really make this happen because kyler murray Did
- 51:59Speaker 1: not look great, but I think it's, I mean, first game,
- 52:01Speaker 1: it's a fair point to bring up.
- 52:05Speaker 3: How much do they need? I mean, now with the
- 52:07Speaker 3: way the Green Bay looks in the division and just
- 52:11Speaker 3: kind of the herky-jerky nature that Detroit's been kind of
- 52:14Speaker 3: playing with all season long, they might not need more.
- 52:17Speaker 3: I think you can go and ask your offense to
- 52:19Speaker 3: just get you 21 points And that might actually be enough.
- 52:23Speaker 3: I was probably not going to watch any Dolphins game
- 52:25Speaker 3: all year, but I am now going to watch this
- 52:28Speaker 3: game because I think there's a chance that Brian Flores
- 52:30Speaker 3: can actually blitz 100%.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Of the snaps. Oh, and I forgot, he hates him.
- 52:34Speaker 2: That's right, they fired him that time.
- 52:36Speaker 3: This might be the first game in NFL history where
- 52:39Speaker 3: a team blitzes on literally every single defensive snap. That's
- 52:43Speaker 3: what I'm going to be watching for.
- 52:44Speaker 1: But League Willis is going to be out there like,
- 52:48Speaker 1: In baseball now, because the pitchers don't hit, the pitcher
- 52:52Speaker 1: throws at somebody, now I got to get hit, because
- 52:54Speaker 1: you ain't got to come to the plate. That's where
- 52:58Speaker 1: Malik Willis is going to be.
- 52:59Speaker 3: In all this. go have that heel right on the
- 53:02Speaker 3: edge of the white in the batter's box, just ready
- 53:04Speaker 3: to step out the way.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Flores is coming with that gas.
- 53:08Speaker 1: Like, Flores does not actually have to approach this game
- 53:12Speaker 1: with actual factual strategy.
- 53:13Speaker 2: They ain't got H-hand no more because he got hurt.
- 53:15Speaker 2: So they don't, like, he doesn't have to be like, yo,
- 53:18Speaker 2: I got to worry about these things. He just be
- 53:19Speaker 2: over there just messing around. Exactly. What y'all want? What
- 53:22Speaker 2: y'all want? What y'all want?
- 53:24Speaker 3: It's on you. Y'all call it.
- 53:26Speaker 1: Look like one of the preseason games where Steve Kerr
- 53:28Speaker 1: will let Draymond be the coach.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Like, Flores be like, hey, Harrison Smith. Hey, you ain't
- 53:34Speaker 2: got to play today, man. Come run this. Come run this.
- 53:37Speaker 2: It's your world. Like, they just, every time I tune
- 53:39Speaker 2: in and see Minnesota, it's just a bunch of dudes
- 53:42Speaker 2: coming all the time. There's no telling from what direction
- 53:45Speaker 2: it's going to happen.
- 53:46Speaker 3: 100%. And it's funny, like, I have now kind of
- 53:49Speaker 3: swung to the other side of the pendulum now, where
- 53:51Speaker 3: I'm like, if I were Brian Flores... I don't have,
- 53:55Speaker 3: it can't get better than this. Head coach, you can't
- 53:57Speaker 3: possibly be better than this. To me, you good where
- 54:01Speaker 3: you're at. You good where you're at.
- 54:03Speaker 1: He's going to spend the rest of his career, and
- 54:06Speaker 1: these numbers are going to come at some point, where
- 54:08Speaker 1: he's going to be like a $ 10 million a year
- 54:10Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. And the thing at least about being a
- 54:14Speaker 1: defensive coordinator, especially success and failure are very clearly determined.
- 54:22Speaker 1: You know, like, like, like there's no, there's not a
- 54:25Speaker 1: whole lot of shocking moves when it comes to the
- 54:27Speaker 1: defensive coordinator.
- 54:28Speaker 2: Right. There's, you know, we got to change the flow.
- 54:30Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 54:32Speaker 2: You know what this is when you're the defensive coordinator
- 54:34Speaker 2: and he's going to.
- 54:35Speaker 1: Reach that place where there's a difference between defensive coordinators.
- 54:38Speaker 1: So like, for example, when we did our AI episode
- 54:41Speaker 1: with my man, Ted Tremper, who was on Ted, one
- 54:43Speaker 1: of my favorite people, he worked as a producer on
- 54:45Speaker 1: that documentary, worked as a producer.
- 54:47Speaker 2: On game theory.
- 54:48Speaker 1: And I always talk about learning something about management when
- 54:50Speaker 1: he was there because Ted had been a showrunner before
- 54:53Speaker 1: and he was the head of our field department. And
- 54:55Speaker 1: he wasn't really the head of our field department. He
- 54:58Speaker 1: was the showrunner of the field department.
- 55:00Speaker 2: Right. Like he had been that person before.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Like guys get to that place where you get to
- 55:04Speaker 1: be the head coach of the defense.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Yes.
- 55:07Speaker 1: You know, so like Chip Kelly's back there at Northwestern now.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Chip Kelly's the head coach of the offense at Northwestern.
- 55:14Speaker 3: Which is really all he ever really wants.
- 55:16Speaker 1: That's all he wants to be is just to be
- 55:18Speaker 1: the head coach of the offense. Brian Flores is going
- 55:21Speaker 1: to get to be the head coach of the defense.
- 55:23Speaker 1: They're like, hey, we would like for you to... He
- 55:25Speaker 1: ain't even going to hear this. Brian Flores ain't even
- 55:28Speaker 1: got to wear a headset.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Right. Why are you talking to me?
- 55:32Speaker 3: Yeah, why are you talking to me? You better go
- 55:35Speaker 3: talk to your quarterback.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Take your ass over there.
- 55:38Speaker 3: Go do that offense shit over there.
- 55:39Speaker 2: Yeah, go get us. How about you go over there
- 55:41Speaker 2: and get us some points? Exactly.
- 55:43Speaker 3: That's what you can do. That's a conversation we need
- 55:45Speaker 3: to have.
- 55:46Speaker 2: I think there's no shame.
- 55:47Speaker 3: There's no shame in being this generation's Buddy Ryan, man. Like,
- 55:50Speaker 3: you tried it out. It didn't work. People got feelings
- 55:54Speaker 3: about you. Your personality is a little grating. All right.
- 55:57Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 55:57Speaker 3: Let me tell you though.
- 55:59Speaker 2: But Buddy Ryan was never cool with being that either.
- 56:01Speaker 2: That is true.
- 56:02Speaker 3: This is true.
- 56:03Speaker 2: That year, first of all.
- 56:06Speaker 1: And for those who don't know this, because I understand
- 56:08Speaker 1: that this gets low, Buddy Ryan is Rex Ryan's father.
- 56:11Speaker 1: He was the defensive coordinator for the 85 Bears. He
- 56:13Speaker 1: pioneered a defense that doesn't work anymore, but was one
- 56:16Speaker 1: of the all-time great defenses, which.
- 56:17Speaker 2: Is the 46 defense. The 46 defense operated on this premise.
- 56:20Speaker 1: We are going to put as many people in the
- 56:22Speaker 1: box as we can to stop the run. Well, what
- 56:24Speaker 1: about the pass? We're not going to let you throw it.
- 56:27Speaker 1: That's it.
- 56:29Speaker 2: That was the whole premise of the defense is you
- 56:33Speaker 2: can't throw the ball if we sack the quarterback. That
- 56:36Speaker 2: was it. It was the ultimate feast or famine situation.
- 56:39Speaker 2: And when it worked, it worked.
- 56:41Speaker 1: He and Mike Ditka hated each other. Both of them
- 56:45Speaker 1: got carried off. The offense carried Ditka off the field
- 56:48Speaker 1: after the Super Bowl.
- 56:49Speaker 2: The defense carried Buddy Ryan off the field. It was
- 56:52Speaker 2: clearly two teams.
- 56:54Speaker 1: Buddy Ryan was the head coach of the defense, but
- 56:56Speaker 1: he was so good that Ditka could never fire him
- 56:58Speaker 1: through all those years.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Ditka wound up becoming the head coach of the Eagles.
- 57:03Speaker 1: He gets fired there and he goes and he works
- 57:05Speaker 1: on this horse farm in Kentucky because that's his true love.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Out of nowhere, we're in Houston and the news comes
- 57:12Speaker 1: that after the 35-3 game in Buffalo.
- 57:15Speaker 3: You go exactly where I was about to go.
- 57:19Speaker 2: They blew the 35-3 lead against Buffalo.
- 57:21Speaker 1: Had a really good defense that year, by the way,
- 57:23Speaker 1: but they blew a 35-3 lead for reasons that had
- 57:25Speaker 1: less to do with defense than the fact that you
- 57:27Speaker 1: ran a 10 personnel the whole game.
- 57:29Speaker 2: Whatever. The news is the Oilers have hired Buddy Ryan.
- 57:34Speaker 1: They did not ask Jack Pardee, the head coach, about this,
- 57:37Speaker 1: but Adams just went and hired Buddy Ryan. Buddy Ryan,
- 57:41Speaker 1: it's he called the run and shoot office, which is
- 57:44Speaker 1: what it was called at the time. It interviews in public,
- 57:48Speaker 1: the Chuck and duck.
- 57:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 57:50Speaker 1: He referred to it that way. He's got a radio show.
- 57:53Speaker 1: He's got a TV show. He's saying, if I ran this,
- 57:57Speaker 1: we would run this with two backs and two wide receivers,
- 58:00Speaker 1: everything that he would do.
- 58:02Speaker 2: By the end of the year, the defense was a monster, though. Oh,
- 58:06Speaker 2: the defense was a monster. He's in the press campaigning
- 58:09Speaker 2: for players. Like, you guys got to get me Wilbur
- 58:11Speaker 2: Marshall in order to get this done. What? You're the defense? No,
- 58:14Speaker 2: he's not the defense coordinator. He's the coach of the defense.
- 58:17Speaker 3: Buddy Ryan, head coach of the defense.
- 58:19Speaker 1: And then one day, I remember we get a phone
- 58:21Speaker 1: call at the house from a family friend, and she says,
- 58:23Speaker 1: we're watching the game. We're saying, no, it's a Sunday
- 58:25Speaker 1: night game. The Oilers are playing the Jets, and Buddy
- 58:27Speaker 1: Ryan has just punched the offensive coordinator in the face.
- 58:30Speaker 3: I mean, if you're Kevin Gilbride, that had to have
- 58:34Speaker 3: just been the worst year of your goddamn life.
- 58:38Speaker 2: Except they were like 12-4. They were so good at
- 58:41Speaker 2: the end. They were so good. And they lost.
- 58:45Speaker 3: The day-to-day, you know. Oh, it's awful.
- 58:48Speaker 2: Awful.
- 58:48Speaker 3: There's no respect coming from your defense.
- 58:51Speaker 1: This guy only cares about the respect of defensive players.
- 58:55Speaker 1: I am terrified to think of what he thought of
- 58:58Speaker 1: Warren Moon. I don't even like, I don't even want
- 59:01Speaker 1: to get there. Here's one for you, though. Do you
- 59:03Speaker 1: know who the quarterback was in the playoff game that
- 59:06Speaker 1: put them out?
- 59:07Speaker 3: Oh, I don't remember.
- 59:08Speaker 2: I know it was a warm moon.
- 59:10Speaker 1: It was at the Astrodome. It was the last playoff
- 59:12Speaker 1: game at the Astrodome. They played against the Kansas City Chiefs,
- 59:15Speaker 1: and the quarterback was Joe Montana.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Wow. Wow.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Yes.
- 59:20Speaker 2: Yes.
- 59:21Speaker 1: Before the Chiefs got good, like my thing about the
- 59:24Speaker 1: Washington Wizards, I'm 46 years old. The Wizards haven't won
- 59:26Speaker 1: 50 games in my life. For a long stretch with
- 59:28Speaker 1: the Chiefs, it was the last time they won a
- 59:30Speaker 1: playoff game.
- 59:31Speaker 2: They beat the Houston Oilers.
- 59:33Speaker 3: Wild. That era of Oilers. That era of Oilers is wild.
- 59:39Speaker 1: It was that far back. But no, that's the thing.
- 59:41Speaker 1: If guys, Mike Pettin, remember Mike Pettin got that head coach.
- 59:44Speaker 2: Job with the Browns? It was like, I never want
- 59:45Speaker 2: to be a head coach again. Yes.
- 59:47Speaker 3: I think the same thing happens with offensive line coaches sometimes, man.
- 59:50Speaker 3: Bill Callahan took his shot and was like, man, I
- 59:53Speaker 3: don't get to do what I love with this job.
- 59:55Speaker 3: I just want to be with the big fellas. Just
- 59:57Speaker 3: get me with the big fellas.
- 59:58Speaker 2: I got to say, it doesn't sound like anybody on
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: the coaching staff enjoys their jobs quite like the offensive
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: line coach because they like the guys they coach more
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: than anybody else likes the guys that they coach. That's all.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: I mean, you and Dominique kind of talked about the
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: personality types that become offensive linemen. You know, the same
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: thing kind of exists with O-line coaches, too. They give
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: you the hard-ass stuff on the field. But outside of that,
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: these guys is just hanging. It's just a bunch of
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: big dudes.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Talking about being big.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: Trying to be helpful.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: Doing their job.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Exactly. They try to be helpful.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: That's it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: What can I do for you?
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: That's it, man. They don't like the stress.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: They are here to contribute.
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: They ain't yelling at you, so don't yell at them. Right?
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: It's a very particular personality type.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Well, yeah, their thing is like, hey, we are entering
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: into a covenant of sorts where I can tear this
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: whole motherfucker up, but we don't want that. So I've
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: just decided to be cool about it.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: And so you guys should be cool about it, too.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: I want to tell you this last thing. I can
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: save this for the Dominique show, but I'm going to
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: just say it now because I'm thinking about it. Monday
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: night is Saints and the Falcons. And it's 20 years since,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: you know, the Saints returned to the Superdome. And it's
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: the Steve Gleason block. I think they have a statue
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: of it.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: All of that.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: It's like, it's very important, very important day in the
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: history of the saints. I'm sure that Ryan will be
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: very excited about it. And that's back when I still
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: rooted for the Falcons. And it's really tough because I
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: don't find anything charming about any of that shit.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: At all. I don't, it's not, it's not a feel good.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: It's not, it's not a feel good story to me. It's, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: I don't look back on it at all with like, oh, wow,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: how beautiful that was or anything else.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: None of that. None of that at all. I hate that.
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: I hated that. I hated that play.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I don't, I mean, I understand if you like it,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: if you were in New Orleans, but like, if y'all
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: cared so much about New Orleans like that, why don't
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: you call your fucking congressman and start doing a little
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: something to.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: Help the place out?
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Right? Like, it's all you got for them? It's woo, yay,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: way to block the kids. That's all you got for them?
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Because if that's all you got for them, then you
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: ain't really doing nothing at all, to be perfectly honest.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: You faking a fuck. I'm keeping it real.
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: This right here is why the NFC South is the
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: greatest fucking division of football. Okay?
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: There's some real spite.
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: There is legitimate spite.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: And honestly, I would say that... And you know why
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: there's so much... The rivalry's even better now.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: It's so much better now.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: There's so much spite in that division because the teams
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: for so long have by and large been so terrible
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: that all you got is beating each other.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: Falcons and the Saints, what's there to get charged up about?
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: We got two chances to win a game this year.
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: I mean, and it's very particular with New Orleans and
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: Atlanta because there is so much just intermingling. And people
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: have had to leave one city for the other for
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: a bunch of different reasons. So it's always mixed company.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Brother, I was at that Super Bowl where all the
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Saints people had bought them tickets and then they got
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: the business end of that call. And all those people
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: still came to the Super Bowl wearing their Saints clothes.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: And I had to be careful because on one hand,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: I wanted to laugh in all of their faces because
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: it was so funny.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: On the other hand, you know what those people had
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: in college. You know what those people had in college.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: Those people were from New Orleans. And I don't want
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: to fight anybody from New Orleans under any circumstance whatsoever.
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: I don't want to deal with them solo. I damn
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: sure don't want to deal with a group of agitated
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: New Orleans.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: White folks, gangsters, and the thugs. I want no problems
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: with any of them. Harry Connick Jr., beat you to sleep.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: I don't want to hear none of that. But anyway,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: I will not be watching that Monday night game because
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: they not thinking about everybody in their audience, right?
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: They normally try to be non-offensive. I'm very offended. How
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: about that?
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: But hey, Deontay Lee, check him out, covering the NFL
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: at the Ranger.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: My man, I greatly appreciate it.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: Appreciate you, bro.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: We'll see if I survive Babyface Gate. Over Babyface, no less.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: We're not talking about Stevie right now. We're not talking
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: about Michael Jackson. We're not talking about Fred Hampton. We're
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: talking about Babyface.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: Not going to cry. That song just popped in my head.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: And God, I love Mary. But you have Mary in
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: the booth. And all you can get me is I'm
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: not going to cry these tears. Eleven years.
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: I was your lover and your sacrilege. He's just like,
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: fuck it. I ain't coming up with nothing else. I'm done.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: It'll work.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: He was just taking notes on the conversation and said,
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: I can make a song out of this.
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. He's like, I watched the movie. I'm going
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: to get that exact scene. That is, that is, that is,
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: that is what, that is, that gets back again. That's
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: my thing. It's always so on the nose. The only
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: people who made songs more on the nose was Three
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: 6 Mafia. This song is called Let's Plan a Robbery.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: It's about planning a robbery.
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: Tearing a club up.
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: What we got going on today?
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: We're going to tear the club up, except they're not boring.
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: And that's the difference.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: But, ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us
