- 0:32Speaker 3: Thank you. Welcome back to another episode of Mixed Company Podcast.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Of course I'm one of the hosts, Jamison Welsh, and
- 0:38Speaker 3: of course I'm also joined by the Classy Alcoholics Classy.
- 0:41Speaker 3: What's going on.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Man oh Man Jameson. I am feeling good because we
- 0:45Speaker 2: have a lot to talk about today about the fights
- 0:48Speaker 2: over syncing to my weekend. Even though a lot of
- 0:51Speaker 2: the fights weren't the best, I still love watching boxing
- 0:54Speaker 2: and I love talking about it. So hey, the more
- 0:56Speaker 2: fights are better. More boxing is good for business.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Right Absolutely. It's a good to see names that people
- 1:02Speaker 3: understand and recognize and have heard of before fighting. It's
- 1:05Speaker 3: also good to have them fighting in places that are
- 1:08Speaker 3: somewhat known or you know, somewhat that are intriguing. So
- 1:12Speaker 3: I'm happy that we got all that mixed into a
- 1:14Speaker 3: few days. So it was good to see sure.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I mean, that's a lot to cover, so let's just
- 1:19Speaker 2: dive in. We may as well go chronologically. I mean,
- 1:21Speaker 2: let's start with Friday, May second. The Ring magazine Riat
- 1:25Speaker 2: Season and Saudi Royal Turkey Ella Ship put on a
- 1:28Speaker 2: very hyped boxing showcase in the middle of Times Square,
- 1:30Speaker 2: New York. Ring was built right on the street and
- 1:33Speaker 2: the event was invite only. We'll talk about the individual fights,
- 1:36Speaker 2: but first talking about the actual event. I was keeping
- 1:39Speaker 2: an open mind going in, but once I saw what
- 1:41Speaker 2: it was like, I thought it was whack as hell.
- 1:44Speaker 2: The ring area was totally blocked off. Spectators couldn't see anything.
- 1:48Speaker 2: There was a small pen where fans could get in
- 1:50Speaker 2: across the street, but all they had was a TV
- 1:52Speaker 2: playing the live stream. They couldn't actually see any fighters. Honestly,
- 1:56Speaker 2: if that were me, I'd rather just go to a
- 1:58Speaker 2: bar and watch the event, to be honest with you.
- 2:01Speaker 2: But you know, oh, the fights were missing the roar
- 2:03Speaker 2: of the crowd, so the vibes roll off. But before
- 2:07Speaker 2: before I go on on an even longer rant, Jamison,
- 2:10Speaker 2: what were your thoughts on this whole event? Times Square
- 2:13Speaker 2: Times Square Boxing Showcase?
- 2:15Speaker 3: It did not prioritize the fans. It prioritized whatever was
- 2:19Speaker 3: throwing it. It felt like, hey, here, I'm so rich,
- 2:22Speaker 3: I could do this. That's what it felt like to me.
- 2:24Speaker 3: It was like, all right, money's not an issue to me.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I'll put an event right in the middle of Times Square,
- 2:29Speaker 3: and yeah, if I got paid or if I'm involved
- 2:34Speaker 3: any way shipe or form, I'm not really happy about
- 2:36Speaker 3: that because I want to see the fight. I'm not
- 2:39Speaker 3: there to be a part of some some like some
- 2:42Speaker 3: publicity stunt. I'm there to see the actual fight. There
- 2:45Speaker 3: are people who paid money that couldn't watch fight, and
- 2:48Speaker 3: that ain't it Like. I don't care about the theatrics.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I care about the actual raw fighting, and I get
- 2:54Speaker 3: having trying events I'm all cool for. But when people
- 2:57Speaker 3: who pay for tickets can't watch whether it is, I
- 3:00Speaker 3: don't think that's a good situation. I'm not a big
- 3:03Speaker 3: fan of those things. Whenever the boxing matter comes secondary,
- 3:07Speaker 3: I'm out.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You know, you and I talked about how this was
- 3:11Speaker 2: very clearly a stunt, and I wasn't against a boxing stunt.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I'm not against stunts and boxing or in action movies
- 3:18Speaker 2: for that matter, more stunts, but I think that okay,
- 3:22Speaker 2: The question was, will this stunt bring in more attention
- 3:26Speaker 2: to boxing positively creates create some new fans of the sport,
- 3:29Speaker 2: And after watching it, the answer to me is a
- 3:31Speaker 2: resounding fuck no. To be quite honest with you, I
- 3:35Speaker 2: just don't see. All the announcers were like, this is
- 3:38Speaker 2: so special, it's so cool, it's so exciting. I was watching.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I didn't think so. I didn't really find it that exciting.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I mean everything. If you wanted to fence off the ring,
- 3:48Speaker 2: that's one thing. Blocking it off. Walling it off is
- 3:51Speaker 2: totally different. You know, if there were spectators just walking
- 3:54Speaker 2: by getting the actually see a fight, even from a distance,
- 3:57Speaker 2: that'd be cool. That'd be something you know that people
- 4:00Speaker 2: will get excited ou' and say, what's going on out here?
- 4:02Speaker 2: Holy crap, you know there's a boxing ring in the
- 4:04Speaker 2: middle of Time Square. But as it stands, the thing
- 4:08Speaker 2: just had like a bunch of coke dads and McDonald's
- 4:11Speaker 2: AADs in the back. Like that doesn't make it special
- 4:13Speaker 2: to me.
- 4:14Speaker 3: It was a stunt. It was a marketing thing. It
- 4:18Speaker 3: wasn't for boxing. It was for a we're trying something out.
- 4:21Speaker 3: If it works out right, if it doesn't, all well,
- 4:23Speaker 3: it's just for marketing. I don't mind the thought process,
- 4:27Speaker 3: right because you want to do something big and bold,
- 4:29Speaker 3: but if you're not prioritizing the actual boxing itself, you
- 4:32Speaker 3: kind of lose everybody. And I think that's what ended
- 4:34Speaker 3: up happening. But I think it was a foreshadowing or
- 4:37Speaker 3: what was to come over the next few days, because
- 4:39Speaker 3: if you look at the boxing matches, you look at
- 4:42Speaker 3: what took place, it kind of gave the event or
- 4:45Speaker 3: the feel of guys are just there because they're getting
- 4:49Speaker 3: paid more than they're used to. It wasn't guys pight
- 4:51Speaker 3: of the best fight they could. It was fighting to
- 4:53Speaker 3: collected check. And it felt like all this was a
- 4:55Speaker 3: business arrangement rather than really good fights.
- 5:00Speaker 2: And I have no problem with fighters getting paid, you know,
- 5:02Speaker 2: bigger bags, good for them. But yeah, this is an
- 5:05Speaker 2: issue with specifically Saudi money coming in and it's getting
- 5:10Speaker 2: so I'm not gonna say the Saudis are monopolizing boxing,
- 5:12Speaker 2: but they have a big stake in it, and it's
- 5:15Speaker 2: it's it's kind of close. It's getting close, and we're
- 5:17Speaker 2: on the verge of it.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Man, we got we gotta be real with it. I mean,
- 5:20Speaker 3: we see what they're doing. We see what's going on.
- 5:23Speaker 3: They got Canelo and Tans Crawford to fight in a
- 5:25Speaker 3: football stadium in three months from now, so we know
- 5:28Speaker 3: what's going on. We can't we can't be lying about this.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And if yeah, let's say let's give Turkey Ala Shik,
- 5:36Speaker 2: the Saudi royal who's like the guy putting these fights together,
- 5:39Speaker 2: Let's say give them the benefit of the doubt and
- 5:41Speaker 2: say he truly loves boxing and he wants to make
- 5:43Speaker 2: it better and he wants to bring it back to
- 5:45Speaker 2: his heyday. I'm not saying that's not true. I'm saying
- 5:49Speaker 2: that if for whatever reason, the Saudi's as a whole
- 5:52Speaker 2: stop caring about boxing, what's gonna happen when they're the
- 5:55Speaker 2: ones that are propping it up the most right now?
- 5:57Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Like, where are we said
- 6:00Speaker 2: that they just stop caring for whatever reason?
- 6:02Speaker 3: So what's interesting?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Right?
- 6:03Speaker 3: Because boxing always have a home. Like That's one thing
- 6:05Speaker 3: I think we all have to realize. I think right
- 6:07Speaker 3: now there is a run on sports where if you
- 6:10Speaker 3: can get invested in sports, it's the long term play.
- 6:13Speaker 3: So if you can get value in sports, you can
- 6:16Speaker 3: be in there. It's something like a stock. If you
- 6:18Speaker 3: get in there at the early part, in ten years,
- 6:20Speaker 3: fifteen years, it goes up, you can get a return
- 6:23Speaker 3: on your investment. Also, when it comes to the side
- 6:25Speaker 3: of money, they have so much money that they've been
- 6:28Speaker 3: trying to get into American sports. We saw what lived golf.
- 6:31Speaker 3: We've been hearing rumors about them buying parts of NFL
- 6:34Speaker 3: and NBA and Major League Baseball franchises. So they've been
- 6:37Speaker 3: trying to get into American in sports because the money
- 6:39Speaker 3: is so good. So boxing and UFC are prime candidates,
- 6:43Speaker 3: because there's always been murmurs about there's not enough money
- 6:46Speaker 3: in those two things. The fires don't get paid a
- 6:48Speaker 3: whole lot or only paid enough, so it's like a
- 6:51Speaker 3: perfect marriage. However, all money ain't good money, and we
- 6:55Speaker 3: need to see better planning going forward instead of just
- 6:58Speaker 3: throwing money out there and hopefully and stick.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Sure, and a lot of the fans have been just
- 7:03Speaker 2: raving about, Oh look, Turkeyoshik's putting these fights together, the
- 7:07Speaker 2: ones we want to see. He's actually putting these names
- 7:09Speaker 2: out there, like Gotter, be even Beval. You know they're
- 7:12Speaker 2: saying this guy's doing it. You know, he's making the
- 7:14Speaker 2: real fights. But then the same fans, even rightfully so, complained, well,
- 7:18Speaker 2: that fight sucked, that fight was boring. Okay, then what
- 7:21Speaker 2: are we talking? Can we make a connection here, like
- 7:23Speaker 2: can we put the buzzle pieces together?
- 7:25Speaker 3: So getting Canelo and Crawford to fight in September is big, right,
- 7:30Speaker 3: That's a big fight in a football stadium. If he
- 7:33Speaker 3: was a guy who made that happen, kudos to him. However,
- 7:36Speaker 3: we got a hundred other fights that got to be
- 7:38Speaker 3: made and got to be done throughout the year. So
- 7:41Speaker 3: what about those fights, Like why can't we get Tank
- 7:44Speaker 3: and Shakie Stevens in the fight? Why can't we get
- 7:46Speaker 3: Boots in this and somebody else to fight? The problem
- 7:49Speaker 3: I think we've had over the last twenty years or so,
- 7:51Speaker 3: it's too many secondary fights that are being made and
- 7:54Speaker 3: not primary fights that are being made. And that's the
- 7:57Speaker 3: issue we've been as fans. We've been forced into accepting
- 8:01Speaker 3: that when that should not have been the case all
- 8:03Speaker 3: these years.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Right, And I'm gonna be very much like Spuck in
- 8:07Speaker 2: this episode, very logical, you know, kind of give credit
- 8:09Speaker 2: where credit is due as we talk about all this
- 8:11Speaker 2: stuff and then also talk shit when I think it's warrented.
- 8:14Speaker 2: But just getting into the fights on Friday, you know,
- 8:18Speaker 2: I saw most of the tale Fe Malopez fight that
- 8:21Speaker 2: was he looked good. You know, tayl was in great form. Yeah,
- 8:23Speaker 2: he was light on his feet. He was doing the
- 8:26Speaker 2: perfect thing. We're throwing a punch, getting in close, landing
- 8:29Speaker 2: a punch, getting back out. That takes a lot of skill.
- 8:33Speaker 2: I've never been able to do that. I've never was
- 8:35Speaker 2: never that light on my feet, but I've sparred with
- 8:37Speaker 2: dudes that can actually do that, and it sucks. It's
- 8:40Speaker 2: it's frustrating, and when you got the defensive moves and
- 8:44Speaker 2: it's hard to land a hand on a guy who
- 8:46Speaker 2: gets in and out really quick, you know that that
- 8:48Speaker 2: greats on you. So he My favorite part of that
- 8:51Speaker 2: fight was the analoger saying, I have no idea how
- 8:55Speaker 2: Tayo Fima Lopez lost to camp Boso's junior many years ago,
- 8:58Speaker 2: because that was a fluke and George Kembosa's jeter kind
- 9:01Speaker 2: of sucks. So I think he had a he had
- 9:04Speaker 2: a good night. It was a fluke. He's a one
- 9:05Speaker 2: hit wonder. I think he had a lot of hype
- 9:08Speaker 2: after that fight, but it was more that Tayo had
- 9:11Speaker 2: an off night than Kembosa's was awesome. It's it was
- 9:14Speaker 2: so funny to bring it up because by myself in
- 9:17Speaker 2: my apartment, I went, yeah, I agree. I also can't
- 9:21Speaker 2: believe that Tail lost.
- 9:22Speaker 3: That fight happens that way though it had. Boxing is
- 9:24Speaker 3: we were like that where sure, one bad night can
- 9:28Speaker 3: be a career changer, but also what you do after
- 9:31Speaker 3: that bad night, do you just can get better or
- 9:34Speaker 3: is that bad night who you become? So that's why
- 9:36Speaker 3: boxing is so fun and exciting.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Sure and Tail came back. You know, one of his
- 9:41Speaker 2: best performances was against Josh Taylor after that loss, so
- 9:44Speaker 2: you know, uh, he had a great performance Friday night,
- 9:48Speaker 2: so kudos to him. On the opposite side of the spectrum,
- 9:52Speaker 2: we had Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez. You know, I
- 9:56Speaker 2: I love boxing and I'm just I'm like the easiest
- 10:00Speaker 2: lay when it comes to boxing. I'm like, Okay, maybe
- 10:02Speaker 2: it's not the most exciting fight, but I love watching
- 10:05Speaker 2: guys download information, you know, move like their chess players
- 10:09Speaker 2: do this, do that. I give so much credit to
- 10:11Speaker 2: fighters because it's it's hard getting in that ring. The
- 10:13Speaker 2: training they do is super hard, so I'm not coming
- 10:16Speaker 2: in being a hater, but this fight suck. This fight
- 10:19Speaker 2: really sucks.
- 10:20Speaker 3: A whole lot of punches thrown. I think that's the
- 10:23Speaker 3: biggest issue I have with these fights that are getting
- 10:25Speaker 3: set up, is it feels like they're literally taking the
- 10:28Speaker 3: money and doing the bare minimum to score the fight
- 10:32Speaker 3: and then moving on with their day. That's what it
- 10:34Speaker 3: feels like. What's going on. Yeah, it was not a
- 10:37Speaker 3: good fight. I mean, Devin Handy coming up the last
- 10:39Speaker 3: fight he fought, coming to this one, and who's buying
- 10:42Speaker 3: Devin Handy stock right.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Another thing I'm very I have a lot of leeway
- 10:50Speaker 2: on is you know, I'm not the guy to me
- 10:51Speaker 2: say one bad fighter, one loss makes you a terrible fighter.
- 10:55Speaker 2: A lot of fans would be like, hey, hey he's done.
- 10:58Speaker 2: He lost the Gircia. He was awful again. He could
- 11:00Speaker 2: have had a bad night. But this didn't make me
- 11:03Speaker 2: want to give him any any credit, you.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Know exactly, looking like like the Garcia thing. I don't
- 11:09Speaker 3: really know, we know now, I kinda I have different
- 11:14Speaker 3: feelings about that fight now than I did, you know,
- 11:17Speaker 3: back then. But with all that being said, when you're
- 11:20Speaker 3: Devin Haney, you've had the resume you've had to this point.
- 11:23Speaker 3: We expect more from you. We expect a dominant performance,
- 11:26Speaker 3: elite performance. Just didn't get that. It was kind of like,
- 11:29Speaker 3: I hear you go here, you go, damn take this
- 11:32Speaker 3: and I'll go about my day and wait for the
- 11:33Speaker 3: next fight. It wasn't no oh show, I'm the best
- 11:36Speaker 3: fighter in this building tonight and y'all don't see this.
- 11:39Speaker 3: I can't wait for the next one. It wasn't anything
- 11:41Speaker 3: close to that at all.
- 11:43Speaker 2: But also, let's not forget Devin Haney's best performance was
- 11:47Speaker 2: against who George Kemboso's junior, who he absolutely demolished. He
- 11:52Speaker 2: went to Craikey Island and he embarrassed that man. Was
- 11:57Speaker 2: that was Australia or Ireland, Australia Kembosas Australia. Sorry I said,
- 12:02Speaker 2: I said Criiky Island because I mean no. He went
- 12:06Speaker 2: to Australia twice, both times embarrassed that man. But again,
- 12:08Speaker 2: I think just Cambosas isn't that good. So I think
- 12:12Speaker 2: Haney was overrated. Possibly he was rated well because it
- 12:18Speaker 2: was an excellent performance against not a great fighter in
- 12:20Speaker 2: my opinion, So maybe we're giving too much credit to
- 12:24Speaker 2: Haney honestly, maybe he's not the elite guy. And he
- 12:28Speaker 2: didn't look very good. He won against Lomachenko, but he
- 12:30Speaker 2: did not look great, and a lot of people cried robbery.
- 12:33Speaker 2: And that's one that I'm not going to go all
- 12:36Speaker 2: the way say robbery, but I will say it was
- 12:38Speaker 2: not an elite performance either. So he's not really showing
- 12:41Speaker 2: us that he's got what it takes, I think personally,
- 12:44Speaker 2: And uh, that's bummer because he's a he is a
- 12:47Speaker 2: talented young guy, and I don't know, I mean, the
- 12:50Speaker 2: all of the hype for Garcia Haney rematch is kind
- 12:54Speaker 2: of sucked out of the building, out of the balloon. Yeah,
- 13:01Speaker 2: on that topic, So, uh, these Rian seas and these
- 13:04Speaker 2: these Saudi backed fights, you know, they have a lot
- 13:06Speaker 2: of these trailers, really expensive outland as trailers that we've
- 13:10Speaker 2: seen for like Fury versus Ou Sick and stuff like that.
- 13:12Speaker 2: They had one for this fight, and it was all
- 13:15Speaker 2: Hani and Garcia going at each other, you know, talking
- 13:18Speaker 2: shit to each other, but they weren't even fighting, Like,
- 13:20Speaker 2: what are you doing? Don't hype a fight that's not happening.
- 13:23Speaker 2: It's like it's like sometimes you when I see a
- 13:26Speaker 2: shitty movie, and the movie like either references another better movie,
- 13:31Speaker 2: or the characters are talking about it, or sometimes the
- 13:33Speaker 2: characters are watching like good Fellas on a TV. And
- 13:36Speaker 2: I'm like, I'd rather be watching good Fellas than this
- 13:38Speaker 2: piece of shit, you know what I mean? So I why,
- 13:42Speaker 2: I just I'll never understand they're trying to pre hype
- 13:46Speaker 2: a fight that that isn't really wasn't even like settled, right,
- 13:51Speaker 2: there's no specific date set, and look what happened. Maybe
- 13:56Speaker 2: maybe Turkeyola Schik is getting too big for his breeches
- 13:59Speaker 2: and he's kind of high in his own supply, you know,
- 14:01Speaker 2: he thinks he can make anything happen. He's gonna have
- 14:04Speaker 2: an awesome Garcia Haiti fight, and not everybody wants that anymore.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna go with this one here. I think
- 14:17Speaker 3: that we need to see boxers prove themselves in the
- 14:20Speaker 3: ring before we give them an automatic date and a
- 14:23Speaker 3: high profile situation. I think we've given too many boxers
- 14:26Speaker 3: have benefit of the doubt based off of their name
- 14:28Speaker 3: and what they did in the past, rather what they're
- 14:30Speaker 3: currently are, what they're currently about, And I think when
- 14:32Speaker 3: that when that changed, I think we get some better boxing.
- 14:36Speaker 3: It's been a rough man like Honestly, certain guys make
- 14:39Speaker 3: a name. Certain guys also falter. Certain guys also that
- 14:43Speaker 3: loss of the experience changes them. Man Like I said
- 14:45Speaker 3: the hany thing after we know now with Garcia, it's
- 14:47Speaker 3: a whole different situation. Now it's a whole different thought
- 14:49Speaker 3: process or whatever. But man like, some of these guys
- 14:53Speaker 3: ain't that good, Like this is not that good. There's okay,
- 14:56Speaker 3: fighters that have been propped up to be good fighters
- 14:58Speaker 3: and they're not.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Wee did the announcers too kept saying, is that is
- 15:03Speaker 2: Haney gunshy because you know he got they got pretty
- 15:07Speaker 2: uh trounced pretty and pretty protecular fashioned by Garcia. But
- 15:10Speaker 2: also it could be maybe he doesn't want to get
- 15:13Speaker 2: hurt before you know, the Garcia fight. You know, we
- 15:15Speaker 2: talked about how when you have a big fight, you
- 15:18Speaker 2: want you that could be coming up. You don't want
- 15:20Speaker 2: to get injured, you want to you don't want to
- 15:22Speaker 2: get your ass kicked, et cetera. But then the other
- 15:25Speaker 2: side of that is if you look shitty in the ring,
- 15:27Speaker 2: we won't want you. We won't want to see that
- 15:29Speaker 2: other fight anyway.
- 15:30Speaker 3: So here's the thing now, So since what happened in
- 15:32Speaker 3: the other fight, do we even see that fight now
- 15:35Speaker 3: or do we get a Ani versus roll freight what
- 15:39Speaker 3: happens here?
- 15:41Speaker 2: I still okay, I still think that we get a
- 15:44Speaker 2: Haney Garcia reimagine. Even though, like I said, the oxygen
- 15:47Speaker 2: has been sucked out of the room, if you're the
- 15:51Speaker 2: marketing people can still get blood from the stone to
- 15:54Speaker 2: you know, mix metaphors here, I think they can still
- 15:56Speaker 2: try their hardest to push the fight. Uh. And you know,
- 16:00Speaker 2: it's like, uh, you know, I keep making movie references
- 16:04Speaker 2: because there's two things that I love as much as boxing,
- 16:06Speaker 2: and it's movies and also drinking. But it's like people
- 16:10Speaker 2: are getting tired of Marvel movies. There's like thirty of
- 16:12Speaker 2: them now. But even so even the people to get tired,
- 16:14Speaker 2: they see a trailer and they're like, oh, maybe Marvel's back,
- 16:17Speaker 2: Oh maybe this one's gonna be a good one, you
- 16:19Speaker 2: know what I mean. Kind of the same thing of
- 16:22Speaker 2: some fans. If I see, you know, Hani versus Garcia
- 16:26Speaker 2: two announced, if I see trailer, if I see a poster,
- 16:29Speaker 2: I might go, well, it could be good.
- 16:33Speaker 3: So I'm gonna throw a stat at you regarding the
- 16:36Speaker 3: Handy fight.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Okay, a good one.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Devin Handy has thrown four hundred and thirty eight punches
- 16:43Speaker 3: over his last twenty four rounds. Oh boy, good man,
- 16:50Speaker 3: it ain't good.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't see who else. Yeah, I mean Hani
- 16:56Speaker 2: Rowley might be a something to salvage his his career.
- 17:00Speaker 2: But uh, well, I guess it's the perfect zegue into
- 17:02Speaker 2: talking about you know, the hype for Garcia and Garcia
- 17:06Speaker 2: versus Roli Romero. That was a huge upset. Roly won
- 17:09Speaker 2: by decision, uh, putting Narcia down in round two. I believe,
- 17:12Speaker 2: I think it's right. Yeah, And uh, this, I'll tell
- 17:16Speaker 2: you this one was personally heartbreaking for me. This one
- 17:18Speaker 2: broke my heart. I thought my soul died. And it's
- 17:21Speaker 2: not because Garcia lost, because I don't give a shit.
- 17:23Speaker 2: It's because I was rooting for Roly and I didn't
- 17:26Speaker 2: fucking bet money on it. He was such an underdog.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Oh I would have made bank. I would have made bank.
- 17:33Speaker 3: You didn't bet either, Nah, I wasn't. Honestly I wasn't.
- 17:36Speaker 3: It ain't crossed my mind and say then next, oh shit,
- 17:41Speaker 3: he's up, and then yeah.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I uh, and you know, I don't bet
- 17:45Speaker 2: very often, definitely not as often as you. So yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 2: it just it wasn't in my brain. But I was
- 17:50Speaker 2: rooting for Roly. I thought he had a chance. I've
- 17:52Speaker 2: never loved Garcia anyway, to be honest with you. You know,
- 17:55Speaker 2: good talented guy, good power, decent speed is all lost.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Yeah, he reminds me he has a lot of Adrian
- 18:05Speaker 3: Bronner in him. That's not good.
- 18:07Speaker 2: He there was a lot of stories about, you know,
- 18:09Speaker 2: he's back, he's on the wagon, he stopped drinking, he
- 18:13Speaker 2: stopped being an asshole, whatever it is, and they were
- 18:16Speaker 2: hyping his return to form after being off for a year.
- 18:19Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, I always saw
- 18:21Speaker 2: him as like a you know, a guy that bullies
- 18:23Speaker 2: his opponents, walks them down, which is fine, you know,
- 18:25Speaker 2: she's just just over overwhelms them with power. But when
- 18:29Speaker 2: he's working with someone again against someone with high ring
- 18:31Speaker 2: IQ like Tank, he doesn't got it. And and let's
- 18:36Speaker 2: not forget Roly Romero was knocked out by Tank Davis,
- 18:40Speaker 2: so I'm sure he learned a lot folk in his
- 18:43Speaker 2: tie with Tank and watching Tank and Garcia. So I
- 18:47Speaker 2: Garcia is like Tyson Fury to me and that he
- 18:50Speaker 2: has a particular style that works, and but there's a
- 18:54Speaker 2: particular fighter that he needed to bring him down. Does
- 18:57Speaker 2: that actually work?
- 18:58Speaker 3: Doesn't actually work?
- 18:59Speaker 2: Well, it's I mean it's he he wins fights and
- 19:02Speaker 2: he has uh he's a big name, but the.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Handy fighting more knowing what we know now, but that
- 19:10Speaker 3: fight be taken away from him.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Well, it's it's more that there's a particular type of
- 19:14Speaker 2: fighter needed to bring down that style and he has
- 19:18Speaker 2: a tank. Tank and Roly uh were needed to bring
- 19:21Speaker 2: down Garcia. Usik was needed to bring down Fury. You know,
- 19:26Speaker 2: Anthony Joshua, I don't know, was probably not gonna do
- 19:28Speaker 2: ship I happened, Yeah, yeah, but I.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Think Rolle was fighting for his career. Yes, Roly was
- 19:37Speaker 3: fighting to basically be a relevant boxer. Ryan Garcia was
- 19:41Speaker 3: fighting fighting because it was May third. It was two
- 19:44Speaker 3: different types of fight fighters in that on that event,
- 19:47Speaker 3: and that was the thing that was very evident. It
- 19:49Speaker 3: felt like Ryan Garcia was filling out a quota and
- 19:51Speaker 3: it's like was fighting to save his career and it
- 19:54Speaker 3: showed that night.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I agreed, and also we saw in the tank fight
- 19:59Speaker 2: that right or see it was Gunshi after putting being
- 20:02Speaker 2: put down. You know again, he's he's a big guy,
- 20:05Speaker 2: he's he's a tough guy. He bullies his opponents, but
- 20:07Speaker 2: when they don't back down, he gets a little, a
- 20:10Speaker 2: little nervous in that ring. And I think we saw
- 20:12Speaker 2: that as well on Friday, So shout out to Rollie.
- 20:16Speaker 2: I think he's a good fighter, and also he's really funny.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Like I usually don't watch like boxers interviews. I don't
- 20:23Speaker 2: watch any of the press conferences. I only care about
- 20:25Speaker 2: what happened in the ring. But I came across some
- 20:28Speaker 2: he was telling a story about when he was younger
- 20:29Speaker 2: and Rowley was when he and his friend snuck in
- 20:32Speaker 2: to try to see a Kendrick Lamar concert. I don't
- 20:34Speaker 2: know if you caught that. It was on Instagram. Yeah,
- 20:36Speaker 2: So so he got busting, got busted by security, He
- 20:40Speaker 2: got like thrown down. He said he had asthma because
- 20:42Speaker 2: they were roughing him up, and he didn't actually, So
- 20:44Speaker 2: I was cracking up, and I'm like, you know what, Roly,
- 20:47Speaker 2: I like you, like you're you're very charming and likable.
- 20:53Speaker 3: But he's overcome a lot of stuff. So, like I
- 20:57Speaker 3: always a field good story. He went from a box
- 21:00Speaker 3: that was like on people's undercards, and he's the guy
- 21:03Speaker 3: you tune up forty it right for the next guy.
- 21:06Speaker 3: But for him to have this kind of performance is
- 21:07Speaker 3: actually cool because he's actually like, he's actually a good dude.
- 21:11Speaker 3: Like he's a Vegas local, so I know people who
- 21:13Speaker 3: know him, I actually know him him. He's actually a
- 21:16Speaker 3: good dude. I know he talks about the shit and
- 21:18Speaker 3: all that stuff, but he's genuine, like a good, genuine dude.
- 21:22Speaker 3: He's not fake, he's not phony. If a kid actual autographing,
- 21:26Speaker 3: actual autographic picture, he's gonna take that picture. So I'm
- 21:29Speaker 3: actually glad he won. I hope going forward he builds
- 21:32Speaker 3: upon this. I hope it's not the best night of
- 21:34Speaker 3: his career. I hope he builds off this, because hell,
- 21:37Speaker 3: you keep on knowing what you're doing, gonna get paid,
- 21:38Speaker 3: and he gonna have some good fights with some championship possibilities.
- 21:41Speaker 3: So hopefully he keeps it up.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, at the very least, he's probably gonna get big fight,
- 21:47Speaker 2: big hype, big money, big person for the next one
- 21:49Speaker 2: off of this win, and we'll see what happens. But
- 21:52Speaker 2: I know i'd say that he's earned a spot and
- 21:54Speaker 2: not the cream of the crop, the tippy top. You know,
- 21:58Speaker 2: he deserves to be in the conversation. And yeah, he's
- 22:00Speaker 2: got a couple of losses, but again that doesn't mean
- 22:02Speaker 2: that he's a shitty fighter that needs to be written off.
- 22:05Speaker 2: You know, this whole concept of yeah, if you don't
- 22:08Speaker 2: have a zero on your record and know on your
- 22:09Speaker 2: record that you're worthless. Like, I hate this modern thinking.
- 22:13Speaker 3: It's impossible in this day and age because there's only
- 22:16Speaker 3: one Floyd all Right is prioritized being undefeated, and he
- 22:20Speaker 3: markets it very well. That's fine for him. Everybody gotta
- 22:23Speaker 3: run their own race, and everybody gotta do what they do.
- 22:27Speaker 3: I feel that a lot of fighters that they figure
- 22:29Speaker 3: out who they are as a person, where they are
- 22:30Speaker 3: as a boxer and focus on that may be a
- 22:32Speaker 3: lot better off and still trying to pretend on to
- 22:35Speaker 3: somebody else or get out for somebody else.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Right, Well, shout out to Roie for the best performance
- 22:42Speaker 2: of that night. Oh again him and Tail. Moving on
- 22:45Speaker 2: to the next day, you know, Saturday, May third was
- 22:49Speaker 2: the return of the face of boxing, Canelo Alvarez fighting
- 22:52Speaker 2: William Skull from Kuba Uh. This fight was also a snoozer. However,
- 22:58Speaker 2: speaking personally, I went to my favorite Mexican sports bar,
- 23:01Speaker 2: the Neighborhood where they always play the Canelo fights. I
- 23:04Speaker 2: got a ninety ounce tower of beer. So let's say this.
- 23:08Speaker 2: I was a bored like I if I was different,
- 23:10Speaker 2: I was having a great time again.
- 23:12Speaker 3: I was out with the people.
- 23:13Speaker 2: There's a good crowd, you know, good food, good drinks.
- 23:17Speaker 2: And that's the thing I'm about. It's like, yes, I
- 23:20Speaker 2: enjoyed watching it by myself at home, especially when it's
- 23:23Speaker 2: a great fight. But it's like again, like again, like
- 23:25Speaker 2: going to see a movie in the theaters, Like that's
- 23:28Speaker 2: a very special event. That's a very special thing, and
- 23:31Speaker 2: it just makes it more fun. So yeah, you know,
- 23:34Speaker 2: I'm trying not to be a hater. And it's not
- 23:36Speaker 2: just because I'm a Canelo fan boy i am. But
- 23:39Speaker 2: hey man, you know, I had no complaints about the
- 23:41Speaker 2: night about Saturday night, but I'll say that. But anyway,
- 23:45Speaker 2: your thoughts Jamison on the uh On the actual fight itself.
- 23:49Speaker 3: It was a tune up fight, but it was very inactive.
- 23:52Speaker 3: It was very like, hey, this is a business decision
- 23:54Speaker 3: type of thing. Let's get through these twelve rounds get
- 23:57Speaker 3: to the show in four months. That's what it felt like.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Watch people were kind of mad watching it. They didn't
- 24:02Speaker 3: know who the other guy was. They're also mad Canelo
- 24:04Speaker 3: for not dropping dude. You know, it was a lot.
- 24:08Speaker 3: It was kind of weird. But at the same time,
- 24:10Speaker 3: we all kind of knew what the situation was, right.
- 24:12Speaker 3: We know what the big prize was, We knew what
- 24:14Speaker 3: was gonna happen. First of all, every knew Canlo is
- 24:16Speaker 3: gonna win. We also knew there was a high probability
- 24:18Speaker 3: of the guy not getting knocked down or knocked out.
- 24:20Speaker 3: We all kind of had that idea. I will say,
- 24:25Speaker 3: if Canelo fights like he's looked the last couple of
- 24:29Speaker 3: times out versus Crawford, I may have some concerns the
- 24:33Speaker 3: same I may have. I'm gonna leave it at that. Now.
- 24:36Speaker 3: I don't know if Canelo is downplaying opponents to save
- 24:40Speaker 3: up for September or what. But the last couple of
- 24:43Speaker 3: times he's been out there, it does not look like
- 24:46Speaker 3: the number one pound pound guy or the face has
- 24:49Speaker 3: not looked like that guy. Still an elite fighter, but
- 24:51Speaker 3: not the best. And the one thing we know about
- 24:53Speaker 3: Chance Crawford is cams. Crawford's gonna come and fight his
- 24:57Speaker 3: best fight. He may not win, but we know what
- 24:59Speaker 3: he's He's gonna be aggressive, he's gonna trying to out box,
- 25:02Speaker 3: and we know what's coming in September. Canelo has to
- 25:06Speaker 3: get to a different level. He's gonna you know, beat
- 25:09Speaker 3: you know, Bud in four months. Let's be interesting to see,
- 25:12Speaker 3: but they fight. It felt like, honestly, if I have
- 25:15Speaker 3: a payday and to keep things rolling, that's all. I
- 25:18Speaker 3: felt like. It was nothing more, not.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Less well, and if you go back to even our
- 25:23Speaker 2: pilot episode, which I don't recommend because I suck shit.
- 25:26Speaker 2: I didn't know what I was doing, but we talked about,
- 25:29Speaker 2: you know, the possibility of Canelo taking even taking the
- 25:32Speaker 2: butt fight. You were very confident that was gonna happen
- 25:34Speaker 2: this year. So credit to you. Shout out to you
- 25:36Speaker 2: for for getting that correct. I was skeptical because I
- 25:39Speaker 2: was thinking, Okay, as long as Canelo thinks it's an
- 25:42Speaker 2: easy win and in an easy big bag, he's gonna
- 25:46Speaker 2: take it, and he might, but he shouldn't specifically about
- 25:50Speaker 2: you know, skull. He he he was show voting and
- 25:53Speaker 2: moving around a lot, and Canlo says like, well, I
- 25:56Speaker 2: hate that kind of fighter who jumps, who moves around
- 25:58Speaker 2: a lot too much. But at the same time, you
- 26:01Speaker 2: got to cut off the ring. That's a skill. Use
- 26:04Speaker 2: as a concept, you know, using your footwork, dodging, bobbing
- 26:07Speaker 2: and weaving, and you know, frustrating the other opponent for
- 26:10Speaker 2: not who can't land. That's a valid strategy. You get
- 26:13Speaker 2: more tired when you miss. But great fighters they don't
- 26:17Speaker 2: just make the opponent miss. What's the second part of
- 26:19Speaker 2: that strategy, jameson, make a miss and not be hit.
- 26:23Speaker 3: That's how it goes.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Yeah, make him miss and make him pay. So Skull
- 26:26Speaker 2: wasn't letting his hands go if he really wanted to
- 26:29Speaker 2: frustrate it. I think he did frustrate Canal. Canelo is
- 26:32Speaker 2: frustrated shit. In the tenth eleventh round, he looked tired
- 26:36Speaker 2: of hell. So Skull had the opportunity to kind of,
- 26:40Speaker 2: you know, come in quick fight an opening, and he
- 26:43Speaker 2: just didn't do it. Credit to him for taking those
- 26:46Speaker 2: Canal's body shots, because Canelo is a power puncher and
- 26:50Speaker 2: body shots are no joke.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Have you ever taken like a liver shot during a scrap?
- 26:53Speaker 4: Jameson m liver shot. No, I've taken one eye. I've
- 27:00Speaker 4: taken a kidney shot before. It's not fun. I've taken
- 27:03Speaker 4: a shot behind the ears, not fun. I've gotten punched
- 27:07Speaker 4: in the throat before, not fun before, not fun.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Sorry, I meant. I meant kidney shots that I meant
- 27:15Speaker 2: to ask because I asked, because that's happened to me
- 27:17Speaker 2: inspiring a few times with dudes that they were not
- 27:20Speaker 2: going one hundred percent. So I've gotten hitting the kidney
- 27:23Speaker 2: like kind of hard and it fucking sucks. Its Yeah,
- 27:28Speaker 2: I understand why body shots are so brutal during during boxing,
- 27:32Speaker 2: and again, Canel is a power puncher. He landed a
- 27:34Speaker 2: couple of very clear, good body shots and Skull took
- 27:37Speaker 2: him in stride. You know, uh maybe two Skull was
- 27:42Speaker 2: goddamn enormous. I didn't realize till they to their face off.
- 27:45Speaker 2: He's taller, he's beefier. Canella looks skinny compared to him
- 27:49Speaker 2: at this fight, so maybe he was worried about Skull's power.
- 27:53Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 27:54Speaker 3: I don't know if it was that, because here's the thing,
- 27:56Speaker 3: Canal one hundred and fifty two punches. That's very low
- 27:59Speaker 3: for him, very very low. Actually, anybody actually, but a
- 28:02Speaker 3: very low amount of punches, which is not but it's
- 28:06Speaker 3: not really good. But again, it felt like an exhibition.
- 28:08Speaker 3: It did not real fight. It felt like, hey, let's
- 28:11Speaker 3: get this money, let's fulfill the contract and move the
- 28:13Speaker 3: move everything along.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that night, the fight before, uh just before was
- 28:19Speaker 2: Badou Jack versus Nolan mckalin. I don't know anything about
- 28:22Speaker 2: those guys, but that was a solid fight. You know,
- 28:24Speaker 2: they were they were letting their hands go. Nothing crazy happened,
- 28:27Speaker 2: no knockouts, you know, nobody gotten, nobody getting rocked or
- 28:31Speaker 2: anything like that. But in terms of just a solid
- 28:33Speaker 2: two dudes that were there to fight and landing blows
- 28:36Speaker 2: and taking them, well, I thought that was that was
- 28:39Speaker 2: That was a good fight. But uh yeah, so and
- 28:43Speaker 2: then there's yeah, the big, the big thing that happened
- 28:45Speaker 2: at the end. Again, I'll give Turkey Ilo shake credit
- 28:49Speaker 2: for credits due he took a major l on Friday
- 28:51Speaker 2: with this stupid Times Square boxing ring idea. But when
- 28:55Speaker 2: he said where's Bud Crawford, Let's have these two guys
- 28:58Speaker 2: face off, I was fucking who and hollering in that bar.
- 29:02Speaker 2: I was clapping so hard, like the table next to
- 29:05Speaker 2: me because if you guys a tournament, like who you
- 29:07Speaker 2: got in that fight?
- 29:08Speaker 3: I actually don't know, baby, Bud blah blah blah blah.
- 29:11Speaker 2: We started going back and forth into you know, me
- 29:13Speaker 2: and these guys who we thought would win, and yeah,
- 29:16Speaker 2: I'm still hype, man, I am still hype about you know,
- 29:19Speaker 2: two of my favorite fighters possibly like the top two
- 29:23Speaker 2: going at each other. It is also a stunt like
- 29:26Speaker 2: why would Bud go up three weight classes now to
- 29:29Speaker 2: to fight Canelo?
- 29:30Speaker 3: Other than we know why, we know why? But here. Yeah, anyway,
- 29:35Speaker 3: the big money fights are only available for so long.
- 29:38Speaker 3: Why the longer you wait, the longer you risk anything happening.
- 29:41Speaker 3: So you gotta take advantage while it's there. And also
- 29:43Speaker 3: remember Bud Crawford became the guy, like the the guy
- 29:47Speaker 3: after this be spens what he did. Like before that fight,
- 29:51Speaker 3: there was no ts of fight Canelo. It wasn't So
- 29:54Speaker 3: you gotta take advantage while it was there because they
- 29:56Speaker 3: won't always be there.
- 29:58Speaker 2: True And uh this god, this is like maybe got
- 30:01Speaker 2: over a month ago. You know, we fed a couple
- 30:04Speaker 2: of episodes with with interviews. We haven't really done a
- 30:06Speaker 2: traditional show, by the way, go back and listen to
- 30:08Speaker 2: episodes thirteen and fourteen to listen to US interview professional
- 30:11Speaker 2: boxert Trinia Choa and PR manager Emma Leaguerd, and they
- 30:15Speaker 2: were really good episodes. But I read an article where
- 30:19Speaker 2: bub said echoed basically what we had talked about before
- 30:22Speaker 2: that he said, I don't have to knock Canelo out.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I just have to beat him. I have to beat
- 30:26Speaker 2: him in terms of points, get as many hits on
- 30:29Speaker 2: him as I can. And he said, I think the
- 30:31Speaker 2: article actually said, my plan is not to knock him out.
- 30:34Speaker 2: So he knows what he's doing, he knows what he
- 30:37Speaker 2: brings to the table. The question is you know what's
- 30:40Speaker 2: Canlo gonna do? He definitely ask the.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Question will be enough? You know, trying to win on
- 30:46Speaker 3: the cards in Vegas versus Canelo is a very tough task.
- 30:50Speaker 3: I don't know if that's the task I would go
- 30:52Speaker 3: into that fight. But again, Kanz Crawford's a confident and
- 30:56Speaker 3: his abilities. I salute him for that.
- 31:00Speaker 2: But if the fight looks like again Devin Haney versus
- 31:04Speaker 2: George Campbosa is like that was not ambiguous, you know,
- 31:07Speaker 2: went to the cards, but the I actually I enjoyed
- 31:11Speaker 2: watching that fight a lot like I said it was
- 31:13Speaker 2: in Australia and there was you know, everybody came out
- 31:16Speaker 2: going out for Cambos and then you heard the hush
- 31:19Speaker 2: of the crowd after the halfway mark, that the wave
- 31:23Speaker 2: of sadness from all those all those cranky folks and
- 31:26Speaker 2: Cambos is also Greeks. Everybody had like big flights of
- 31:29Speaker 2: like Spartan helmets and they came in all like raw
- 31:32Speaker 2: raw raw, and then it was like, let's see what's
- 31:36Speaker 2: going on on Twitter here in round eleven. Yeah. So
- 31:41Speaker 2: so again, there's always that possibility that, you know, to
- 31:45Speaker 2: the naked to the to the most casual fighter, if
- 31:48Speaker 2: they watch Campbos versus Haiti, like, there's nobody that's gonna say, oh,
- 31:52Speaker 2: that was a robbery and Bud could good could Bud
- 31:56Speaker 2: could possibly pull it off? I don't know. We'll just
- 31:58Speaker 2: have to see.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Definitely can, especially after watching the last couple of Cano outings.
- 32:02Speaker 3: I mean, who's to say that, you know, I'll be honestly,
- 32:05Speaker 3: see what the betting line is. I'll be very interesting
- 32:07Speaker 3: to see what that betting line is when it comes out.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd be very interested. Also a question for you,
- 32:13Speaker 2: you know, they were talking about the fight happening at
- 32:15Speaker 2: Allegiance Stadium with the Raiders playing Vegas. Have you been
- 32:18Speaker 2: to that stadium, by.
- 32:19Speaker 3: The way, it's a very nice stadium. It's not as
- 32:22Speaker 3: nice as like so Far or Jerry's World, but it's
- 32:24Speaker 3: very nice stadium. Having seventy plus thousand in there for
- 32:27Speaker 3: boxing is gonna be interesting. But yeah, it's a it's
- 32:30Speaker 3: a good of it's a good place to have that
- 32:32Speaker 3: kind of event. And also we know the money is
- 32:35Speaker 3: what the money is, so we understand what's that play here.
- 32:37Speaker 3: But now it's a very good situation and I'm glad
- 32:40Speaker 3: we're gonna We're gonna get the fight, and I'm glad
- 32:41Speaker 3: they're putting it in there like it's necessary for that
- 32:44Speaker 3: kind of video.
- 32:46Speaker 2: See, I'm really curious about what that's like for fans
- 32:49Speaker 2: in the nosebleed Seed watching boxing. You watch football, you watch.
- 32:52Speaker 3: On the screen, you watch on the screen. You're not
- 32:54Speaker 3: watching it.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, but like I don't know, I'll not go
- 32:58Speaker 2: to a live event and watch got m screen.
- 33:01Speaker 3: You gotta understand a lot of people like to be
- 33:02Speaker 3: just like to be in the building that's living in
- 33:05Speaker 3: a destination city during holiday weekends. People just happy to
- 33:08Speaker 3: be in the city. They may not be doing that,
- 33:10Speaker 3: but they is happy to be there. A lot of
- 33:11Speaker 3: people can be happy to be there, say that they
- 33:13Speaker 3: were there, tight pictures, the whole nine. But then I'm
- 33:16Speaker 3: just sitting they sit closer to the Southwest Flights than
- 33:18Speaker 3: natural ring.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Okay, okay, And that's a fair answer. So, and the
- 33:23Speaker 2: reason I brought it up is because, you know, speaking
- 33:25Speaker 2: about myself personally and being a giant venue is like concerts,
- 33:28Speaker 2: for example, if if I'm not really cuss, if I'm
- 33:31Speaker 2: in the nosebleed seats, if I can't afford like I mean, nowadays,
- 33:34Speaker 2: what like a six seven hundred dollars ticket for a
- 33:36Speaker 2: damn concert a big day. But let's say back back
- 33:39Speaker 2: when I was, when I went to big shows, if
- 33:42Speaker 2: I couldn't afford like let's say, two or three hundred
- 33:44Speaker 2: for something, you know, halfway done for good, decent seats,
- 33:46Speaker 2: I just wouldn't go. It'd be less fun if I Yeah,
- 33:49Speaker 2: if I have if I could afford only afford like
- 33:52Speaker 2: seventy five bucks and I was in the middle of
- 33:54Speaker 2: the goddamn you know, they said closer to the Southwest flights,
- 33:57Speaker 2: as you said, I would just skip it, you know.
- 33:59Speaker 2: So uh for me, I can't see myself being in
- 34:03Speaker 2: the nose police seats for a fight with guys that
- 34:06Speaker 2: look like ants a football game, you know, like I said,
- 34:09Speaker 2: it's got it's got a big, big area they're running
- 34:12Speaker 2: from them. It seems a little different to me. Same
- 34:13Speaker 2: thing with basketball, but boxing specifically, it's it's a tiny
- 34:16Speaker 2: little ring. But but you make a good point. You know,
- 34:19Speaker 2: the vibes, the vibes are immaculate. Then I can see that,
- 34:25Speaker 2: all right. Next up, let's move a Sunday May fourth,
- 34:28Speaker 2: the card that people said saved secret to my weekend.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Uh now, yeah, in a way from Japan. Fought Ramond
- 34:36Speaker 2: Cardinals for the first time. You know, I fought in
- 34:39Speaker 2: the US for the first time in four years in
- 34:42Speaker 2: Las Vegas. Did you make it out to the actual
- 34:44Speaker 2: fighter or what's what was watched?
- 34:46Speaker 3: I watched on TV. I honestly, since the fight came
- 34:48Speaker 3: on Sunday, I didn't even think about it, actually, go,
- 34:51Speaker 3: I didn't think about actually until it was on, til
- 34:54Speaker 3: the car was on. I didn't think about attending because
- 34:57Speaker 3: Sunday has told me off.
- 34:58Speaker 2: That's why, and that what I really want to know
- 35:01Speaker 2: from you. Is did you have an idea of what
- 35:03Speaker 2: the vibe is on a Sunday night fight. You know,
- 35:05Speaker 2: it is a major fight. It is seeing Good to
- 35:06Speaker 2: Myo weekend, which is a big deal for fights in Vegas,
- 35:08Speaker 2: but this is kind of very different tell us about
- 35:12Speaker 2: life in Vegas during a Sunday night See Good to
- 35:15Speaker 2: Mayo fight.
- 35:16Speaker 3: So all right, so it's funny you mention that because
- 35:19Speaker 3: the Canelo on the Canelo Crawd fights on us Friday, right,
- 35:23Speaker 3: not on Saturday. But it's gonna be very interesting because
- 35:25Speaker 3: normally people start coming into town Wednesday night Thursday morning
- 35:29Speaker 3: and they say the whole weekend a fight being on
- 35:31Speaker 3: fight is gonna throw everything off. Normally fights aren't on
- 35:34Speaker 3: Friday or Sundays for various reasons, for obvious reasons, A
- 35:37Speaker 3: Sunday fight with a non Monday holiday doesn't make sense.
- 35:41Speaker 3: It just doesn't like and I get we get why
- 35:43Speaker 3: this fight was on day wen, We understand it, but
- 35:47Speaker 3: it just is very hard to grasp why this doesn't
- 35:50Speaker 3: quite add up. With that being said, Vegas on a
- 35:55Speaker 3: Sunday is a very tough pool. The people who went,
- 35:58Speaker 3: they said the vibe, cool, atmosphere is cool, but it's
- 36:01Speaker 3: not a Saturday Saturday. You get more people out there.
- 36:04Speaker 3: You got more people, you know, wanting to be in
- 36:06Speaker 3: Vegas for Saturday Sunday. Hold on, a lot of people
- 36:09Speaker 3: got work on Monday. Can't really pull that off. And
- 36:12Speaker 3: next weekend is Mother's Day weekend. Two weeks from now,
- 36:15Speaker 3: two weeks from then is Memorial Day, so you don't
- 36:18Speaker 3: have a lot of people that got like that. This
- 36:20Speaker 3: was this was the first of the month. Rent was due,
- 36:22Speaker 3: So you know what I mean. It's not the same
- 36:24Speaker 3: as it was on a regular weekend, but in general,
- 36:27Speaker 3: man Vegas fight weekends. Bro, It's crazy. You started to
- 36:30Speaker 3: get to fill on Wednesday or Wednesday night, Thursday morning,
- 36:33Speaker 3: you start to get the feel that it's different, Like
- 36:35Speaker 3: this weekend is be different, a lot of people coming
- 36:37Speaker 3: in town, a lot of things going on. Be careful
- 36:40Speaker 3: first and foremost. We start to get the feel of
- 36:43Speaker 3: the weekend. I would say by Thursday morning, somewhere around
- 36:46Speaker 3: between before noon, you're like, Okay, it's apposed to be
- 36:48Speaker 3: a nice weekend, especially if it's two really good fighters.
- 36:51Speaker 3: Oh yeah, for sure.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Okay. Interesting. See Vegas is just like another world to me,
- 36:56Speaker 2: and I figured like, yeah, Sunday night in Vegas. It's
- 36:59Speaker 2: good to know it that is still like a consideration
- 37:02Speaker 2: for people in Vegas. Yeah, Sunday night, Yeah, those Monday mornings.
- 37:05Speaker 2: I don't know. It just seems like it just seems
- 37:07Speaker 2: like another goddamn to mention where yeah, we have work,
- 37:10Speaker 2: but whatever, we'll either blow it off or will show
- 37:12Speaker 2: up drunk or I don't I don't know what I
- 37:13Speaker 2: think that Vegas is like, to be honest with you,
- 37:16Speaker 2: I have been since I was like maybe twenty two
- 37:19Speaker 2: for a bachelor party, and that was that was a
- 37:21Speaker 2: long long time ago. I don't think i've been since honestly,
- 37:23Speaker 2: but but I do know. Yeah, like I said, it's
- 37:27Speaker 2: it's a whole the world. But in terms of the
- 37:29Speaker 2: actual fight, the eno a fight, it was very exciting,
- 37:33Speaker 2: the chatter about it, you know online, the comments where
- 37:36Speaker 2: this is what we wanted all weekend, high volume fight.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Two guys come on a brawl, a lot of punches
- 37:42Speaker 2: thrown in a way as an undefeated fighter with like
- 37:46Speaker 2: I think it's like eleven KOs in a row, something
- 37:49Speaker 2: like thirty total. I don't have Sorry, I don't have
- 37:51Speaker 2: the stats, the actual stats here, but amazing fighter. He
- 37:55Speaker 2: got dropped in round two. He got a really good
- 37:59Speaker 2: host of face by more kind than us. The only
- 38:01Speaker 2: the second time he's been put down, both times by
- 38:03Speaker 2: Mexican guys. I just want to say that it was
- 38:06Speaker 2: so cool watching an in a way fight live because
- 38:09Speaker 2: if he fights in Tokyo and depending on daylight saving
- 38:12Speaker 2: his time, sometimes that's like four am my time, our time,
- 38:17Speaker 2: so so. And then by the time I get to
- 38:19Speaker 2: the replay, you know, all the highlights are on social media,
- 38:21Speaker 2: and you know, you basically know all the You basically
- 38:25Speaker 2: know that he knocked the guy out because that's what
- 38:27Speaker 2: he's good at. So said, you know what around had happened,
- 38:30Speaker 2: There's no surprises seeing him go down and round two again.
- 38:33Speaker 2: I was clapping and hooting and hollering by myself in
- 38:36Speaker 2: my apartment to nobody, and it was it was super exciting.
- 38:40Speaker 2: So stuff like that is what makes box amazing and
- 38:43Speaker 2: super fun. And seeing it is just an amazing fighter
- 38:47Speaker 2: fighting out of his element and still coming to kick
- 38:50Speaker 2: ass was was great. So shout out to Noah in
- 38:54Speaker 2: a way. But what does this tell us about boxing
- 38:57Speaker 2: as a whole? That the best of the weekend was
- 39:00Speaker 2: the free one on ESPN, not he tells you what
- 39:04Speaker 2: it is like.
- 39:04Speaker 3: One. Here's the thing. If someone one, we want to
- 39:09Speaker 3: be entertained. The NA fight was entertaining. It was the
- 39:11Speaker 3: most entertaining fight of the weekend. It showed, Okay, the
- 39:15Speaker 3: best guy, some people's best guy in the world can
- 39:18Speaker 3: get dropped and regrouped and close the show rather quickly.
- 39:23Speaker 3: So that was cool. But also here's the thing too,
- 39:28Speaker 3: it's you gotta be able to see guys, right, but
- 39:31Speaker 3: you're not from here. Us people who live in this country,
- 39:34Speaker 3: we think that everyone from here is the best at
- 39:37Speaker 3: whatever they do, or it's better than whatever else is
- 39:39Speaker 3: going on in other countries. So until we are proven otherwise,
- 39:43Speaker 3: we're not gonna believe you until we see it. So
- 39:45Speaker 3: you can't put him on pay per view because no
- 39:47Speaker 3: one's gonna pay for it because people don't know about him.
- 39:49Speaker 3: So they had to put on an ESPN. You have to.
- 39:52Speaker 3: We know about Devin Haney and Garcia and Rowley and
- 39:56Speaker 3: all those guys. Obviously you know about Canel, but he's
- 39:58Speaker 3: on pay per view, but or you got a paywall,
- 40:00Speaker 3: as just say. So, it's a little bit different when
- 40:03Speaker 3: somebody from not from here that the general public still
- 40:06Speaker 3: trying to figure out who he is. You got to
- 40:08Speaker 3: have him for a freak of not knowhe's going to watch.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Him, right, And I'd say that anyway, it wasn't very
- 40:14Speaker 2: well known to non boxing fans, like I knew who
- 40:16Speaker 2: he was. I believe you told me you'd watch his
- 40:18Speaker 2: fights on replays. But you asked even a boxing fan,
- 40:22Speaker 2: not just like a casual rando on the street, a
- 40:24Speaker 2: boxing fan, you know, do you know how awesome now
- 40:26Speaker 2: you know is? And they're gonna say, uh who. But
- 40:30Speaker 2: another thing in the showcase is just how global boxing is.
- 40:34Speaker 2: I mean the announcer he you know, did the intro English,
- 40:38Speaker 2: Spanish and a Japanese, which I thought was badass. I
- 40:41Speaker 2: thought that was that was super cool. So yeah, you know,
- 40:44Speaker 2: that's another reason why I hate when boxing fans are like, oh,
- 40:48Speaker 2: so and so is fighting who he said nobody, Well,
- 40:51Speaker 2: maybe you haven't fucking heard of this guy. You don't
- 40:54Speaker 2: know you know five names. If it's not one of
- 40:56Speaker 2: those five names, it's to nobody. Shut up that.
- 40:59Speaker 3: But also if people have in a way on they
- 41:02Speaker 3: number one guy poundful pound, I understand it. I mean
- 41:05Speaker 3: I agree with them, I understand it for sure. I
- 41:08Speaker 3: just think it's tough with those divisions to be the
- 41:10Speaker 3: best guy in the whole sport. I think it's tough.
- 41:13Speaker 3: But again, he fights an entertaining brand of boxing, and
- 41:18Speaker 3: it's something we haven't necessarily seen in a while, so
- 41:20Speaker 3: I think it's dope. I think it's really good to
- 41:22Speaker 3: see now. The one that I will see is this,
- 41:25Speaker 3: if he becomes more active and his knockouts become more
- 41:30Speaker 3: viral and more common, I think you got something. But again,
- 41:35Speaker 3: you also got to have elite fighters that fight him
- 41:38Speaker 3: as well, and we don't know how that's going to
- 41:39Speaker 3: go right.
- 41:41Speaker 2: And then hey, consistently the man fights twice a year,
- 41:43Speaker 2: you know, and he sticks to it, so credit to him,
- 41:45Speaker 2: you know. We don't have a lot of guys doing
- 41:47Speaker 2: that unfortunately.
- 41:49Speaker 3: I never I don't count put people's pockets, and I
- 41:52Speaker 3: don't like talking about at people who making money. I
- 41:54Speaker 3: don't like doing any of those things. However, the boxers
- 41:58Speaker 3: are getting paid too much money for the product that
- 42:01Speaker 3: they're providing. I think for the product that we're getting
- 42:04Speaker 3: overall is not worth the prices these guys are getting paid,
- 42:08Speaker 3: and until that changes, I think we're going to have
- 42:10Speaker 3: more issues overall. In the sport. I'm not saying guys
- 42:14Speaker 3: shouldn't get paid. I'm not saying guys should take a
- 42:17Speaker 3: pay cut. We're not here to see a box with
- 42:18Speaker 3: throw one hundred and fifty two punches in twelve rounds.
- 42:21Speaker 3: That's not what we're here for as fans. And it
- 42:24Speaker 3: feels like overall a lot of boxes are just showing
- 42:28Speaker 3: up and expecting to get the top dollar without providing
- 42:31Speaker 3: top production, and that doesn't that's how business works, that's
- 42:35Speaker 3: not how sports works. If that continues, that will not
- 42:37Speaker 3: work going forward. I don't care who is bankrolling this thing. Eventually,
- 42:41Speaker 3: the fans and the people be like, you know what,
- 42:43Speaker 3: I'll watch the highlights or I'll watch it when I
- 42:46Speaker 3: feel like it. They won't tune in at the peak
- 42:49Speaker 3: of its live production. So you got to make sure
- 42:51Speaker 3: that you don't keep insulting fan, your fans, your consumer,
- 42:55Speaker 3: because when we're seeing lackluster fights an effort, that ain't
- 42:59Speaker 3: cool to see three blowouts and three dominating fights and
- 43:03Speaker 3: seeing guys wanna throw ten or twelve punches around.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Right, and not just we're not just talking about how
- 43:10Speaker 2: much money the fighters is getting paid. We're talking about
- 43:12Speaker 2: how much money the fans are paying for pay per
- 43:13Speaker 2: view matgics, which has always been expensive. As shit. Boss,
- 43:17Speaker 2: He's like the elitist elite, the most elite of sports
- 43:21Speaker 2: in terms of what it costs to watch, you know, help.
- 43:24Speaker 3: On fights, traveling women bore all that shit matters, man.
- 43:29Speaker 3: And there's still people who are our age and older
- 43:32Speaker 3: who will still go to fight because their favorite boxer
- 43:34Speaker 3: is fighting, or somebody they grew up with fighting, or
- 43:37Speaker 3: somebody from the area is fighting. There's people who will try,
- 43:39Speaker 3: whether they'll fly, drive whatever, they'll pay for tickets, pay
- 43:42Speaker 3: for hotel, spend money in that city. You can't take
- 43:46Speaker 3: that for granted because when it's gone, it is gone.
- 43:48Speaker 3: It will not come back.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Bring it back down to the micro level. This weekend,
- 43:53Speaker 2: the neighborhood had a cover because it was fight night,
- 43:57Speaker 2: and if we wanted to reserve a table, there was
- 43:59Speaker 2: a feed per person. What you did, so like even that,
- 44:02Speaker 2: I don't think most places charge a cover when you're
- 44:05Speaker 2: going to watch, you know, the Super Bowl. I can't imagine,
- 44:08Speaker 2: Like I I've never had one, but I can't imagine
- 44:10Speaker 2: even the bigger places, you know, they have a big crowd,
- 44:13Speaker 2: would do that. But covers for fight night. That's so
- 44:16Speaker 2: pretty common. You know, they're the Do you remember that
- 44:21Speaker 2: that weird fight between Canelo and You'll Deer him from
- 44:25Speaker 2: like four years ago I think it was. It was
- 44:28Speaker 2: it was like one of those mandatories. He already had
- 44:30Speaker 2: plans to fight in May, and then he just randomly
- 44:32Speaker 2: said I'm gonna fight him in February just to get
- 44:35Speaker 2: this out of the way, which yep, I thought was
- 44:37Speaker 2: totally badass. But I knew that fight wasn't gonna happen.
- 44:40Speaker 2: So what I did. I went to go watch that
- 44:42Speaker 2: fight at a tindy bar here in Tucson. Shout out
- 44:44Speaker 2: to ten Show Club, which of course as like, yeah,
- 44:46Speaker 2: they normally they have a cover, but it was extra
- 44:49Speaker 2: cover because it was fight night even then, even for that,
- 44:53Speaker 2: so like again.
- 44:55Speaker 3: For that though, So boxing is different than other sports.
- 44:58Speaker 3: The reason why they charge the cover is not because
- 45:00Speaker 3: they're greedy. If it's a pay per view fight and
- 45:04Speaker 3: they're a business, they get charged more than the regular
- 45:07Speaker 3: price we get charged at home. So a business, one
- 45:10Speaker 3: man paid a couple of grand to show the fight
- 45:12Speaker 3: because their account of business account. So it's not like,
- 45:15Speaker 3: oh I just pay one hundred dollars for the fight.
- 45:17Speaker 3: Here you go. Nah, sometimes if there's like a bar
- 45:20Speaker 3: bar it sometimes they gotta probably fifteen hundred for the fight.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Sure, And I'm not even complaining about cover charges a
- 45:26Speaker 2: Bar's all I'm saying is that again, with things that
- 45:28Speaker 2: are specifically pay for you, if you're gonna want to
- 45:30Speaker 2: see a cano fight, that shit's going to be pay
- 45:32Speaker 2: per view. And if you're already planning on a night
- 45:34Speaker 2: out drinks, food, it's going to be you know, at
- 45:36Speaker 2: least one hundred bucks, then another twenty forty sixty if
- 45:39Speaker 2: you've got friends on top of that, it gets Yeah,
- 45:42Speaker 2: if you're and if some people are kind of not
- 45:45Speaker 2: excited about the fights for the weekend because they've been
- 45:47Speaker 2: boring before, you're like, I'm not, I'm just gonna stay
- 45:49Speaker 2: at home, maybe even watching illegally blah blah blah. So yeah,
- 45:52Speaker 2: it's gonna all it's a spectrum of like how much
- 45:56Speaker 2: is going to affect top to bottom is what I'm
- 45:59Speaker 2: getting at. So and then you know, and yeah, if
- 46:02Speaker 2: I'm going out for fight night, I'm always going to
- 46:04Speaker 2: plan to have, you know, spending way more than I
- 46:06Speaker 2: usually am. But but again, you know that's even though
- 46:11Speaker 2: the cano fight was kind of dull. I had a
- 46:13Speaker 2: fantastic time. Like I said, I was hooting and hollering
- 46:16Speaker 2: by the end. The night Tower of Beer probably had
- 46:19Speaker 2: something to do with it, but it was also also
- 46:22Speaker 2: the excitement of Buon of butter fighting Canela. I'm cool.
- 46:28Speaker 2: So any more thoughts on? You know the weekend, you
- 46:30Speaker 2: know the Saudi's coming in Saudi money, you know qulifights.
- 46:34Speaker 2: I mean, we think it's pretty exhaustive, but.
- 46:38Speaker 3: With all due respect to everybody involved, I'm glad we
- 46:40Speaker 3: got a fight, actual a lot of boxing for a weekend.
- 46:43Speaker 3: It was actually good to see over a three ice fan, however,
- 46:48Speaker 3: so I want to get that off the way. However,
- 46:50Speaker 3: with all that being said, well, either people deserve better.
- 46:55Speaker 3: You can't say that you're trying to win, you're fighting
- 46:57Speaker 3: your best fight when underfit team punchers are being thrown around.
- 47:02Speaker 3: You just can't. You can't tell us that like, we're
- 47:04Speaker 3: not here for that. I'm not saying you got to
- 47:06Speaker 3: go out and brawl and forget all your principles, not
- 47:09Speaker 3: saying that. I'm saying that as fans, we want to
- 47:12Speaker 3: see more action. We are supposed to see more action,
- 47:16Speaker 3: and until that gets figured out because it felt some
- 47:19Speaker 3: of the fights felt like highly ranked exhibitions and that
- 47:23Speaker 3: ain't it.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Okay, okay, no, that's perfectly fair. And yeah, you know,
- 47:28Speaker 2: I still really cool that there was fights three nights
- 47:32Speaker 2: in a row, fight nights, three nights in a row,
- 47:33Speaker 2: and it's fun and I would love to see more
- 47:36Speaker 2: of that. But yeah, I would also like to see
- 47:38Speaker 2: guys being more active. Well, Jameson, Let's move on to
- 47:42Speaker 2: our recurring pop pugilism segment where we discussed a movie,
- 47:46Speaker 2: TV show or documentary about boxing. Today we're talking about
- 47:50Speaker 2: The Hurricane from nineteen ninety nine, directed by Norman Juson Jusen.
- 47:55Speaker 2: He's directed a lot of stuff I've heard of but
- 47:57Speaker 2: haven't seen, like Jesus Christ, Superstar and Fiddler on the Roof.
- 48:00Speaker 2: One of his I have seen is In the Heat
- 48:03Speaker 2: of the Night with Sidney Poitier as mister Tibbs. That
- 48:06Speaker 2: movie rules. The Hurricane starts Denzel Washington, who needs absolutely
- 48:10Speaker 2: no introduction. It's based on the true story of a
- 48:13Speaker 2: boxer named Rubin the Hurricane Carter, who was wrongfully imprisoned
- 48:16Speaker 2: for murder in nineteen sixty six and stayed in prison
- 48:19Speaker 2: for almost twenty years. So we're going to talk about
- 48:22Speaker 2: the real Ruben Carter and how a story comparison to
- 48:24Speaker 2: the movie. But first, Jameison, what did you think of
- 48:26Speaker 2: the film? Had you seen this film before and what
- 48:28Speaker 2: did you think of it as it stands without any
- 48:30Speaker 2: comparison to real events.
- 48:31Speaker 3: Saw it in the movie theater way back? Okay, I
- 48:34Speaker 3: think I may have the DVD somewhere or I have
- 48:36Speaker 3: the DVD somewhere. I remember watching the theaters, remember watching
- 48:40Speaker 3: on cable back in the day, like HBO all of
- 48:43Speaker 3: the years, etc. Etc. The movie itself was good, like
- 48:46Speaker 3: the movie like acting. There was a lot of money
- 48:49Speaker 3: behind it. It was a Denzel movie, like you know
- 48:51Speaker 3: what I mean it was. It was good, Like you know,
- 48:53Speaker 3: the movie itself was good. The storylines and actually what
- 48:57Speaker 3: really happened, those are some things I was not aware
- 48:59Speaker 3: of until recently. But the actual movie itself was really good.
- 49:03Speaker 2: Yeah. I saw this when I was a kid, thanks
- 49:05Speaker 2: to my mom. You know, I have my taste of
- 49:06Speaker 2: movies from mom, and she introduced me to a lot
- 49:08Speaker 2: of stuff and she really liked this one. The song,
- 49:12Speaker 2: the hurricane song about his plight, the protest song. I
- 49:16Speaker 2: didn't know until now, because this is the first time
- 49:18Speaker 2: I've rewatched it since I was a kid. That's a
- 49:19Speaker 2: bob Byllen song, which means I actually now know to
- 49:24Speaker 2: bob Byllen songs. This one, Yeah, this one and the
- 49:27Speaker 2: one from the beginning of The Big Lebowski, so I
- 49:30Speaker 2: can name literally two of that band songs. But yeah,
- 49:34Speaker 2: you know, the performance, Denzel's performance phenomenal. Probably one of
- 49:39Speaker 2: the old timers. I saw this one I was a kid.
- 49:42Speaker 2: I saw Malcolm X when I was a kid. I
- 49:43Speaker 2: haven't rewatched Malcolm X, but I'm really interested to go
- 49:46Speaker 2: back and to see how it stecks up to this performance,
- 49:49Speaker 2: you know, not to not to compare and say, oh,
- 49:52Speaker 2: this one's better than that one, Bubba, but just to
- 49:54Speaker 2: see you know him at his peak. I've got the
- 49:56Speaker 2: Malcolm X four K disc from the Criterion collection. I
- 49:59Speaker 2: just haven't popped in and yet. But yeah, So the
- 50:04Speaker 2: gist of the story, Denzel gets arrested, falsely accused for
- 50:09Speaker 2: a murder. Two guys got shot at a bar. He
- 50:12Speaker 2: was convicted. There was some shady goings on with case.
- 50:16Speaker 2: We won't get into like the minor details of it,
- 50:18Speaker 2: but it's really not a boxing movie. It is more
- 50:21Speaker 2: a prison drama and the legal drama.
- 50:24Speaker 3: That is correct. That is correct.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Yeah, they do have a short period where you know,
- 50:29Speaker 2: he's he's fighting, and they do film some fights. But
- 50:32Speaker 2: it's a long movie. It's about just under two and
- 50:34Speaker 2: a half hours. But this is one that I think
- 50:36Speaker 2: makes sense for it because there's a lot of story
- 50:38Speaker 2: and they go through a lot of stuff in this movie. Sometimes,
- 50:43Speaker 2: you know, the biggest defenders are action movies that are
- 50:46Speaker 2: two hours or more, and I'm like, you could have
- 50:48Speaker 2: cut out fifteen twenty minutes easy it made a great movie.
- 50:51Speaker 2: I don't think that's the case with this one. I
- 50:52Speaker 2: think it needed the time and the story. I don't
- 50:55Speaker 2: think it got boring. I think it was paced well.
- 50:59Speaker 2: The biggest things that stuck out to me were when Denzel,
- 51:03Speaker 2: when Ruben Carter goes to prison, he refuses to put
- 51:06Speaker 2: on the prison uniform, which really happened. They throw them
- 51:09Speaker 2: in the hole in isolation, and there's a long I
- 51:11Speaker 2: should have time it, but there's just a long scene
- 51:13Speaker 2: of Denzel just slowly performing going crazy in isolation. You know,
- 51:18Speaker 2: over several days, he's talking to himself, he's getting more
- 51:21Speaker 2: disheveled than everything, and it's just incredible, so so interesting
- 51:25Speaker 2: to watch. And just when you think, all right, this
- 51:28Speaker 2: has gone on too long, it goes on even longer.
- 51:31Speaker 2: But I think it works. I think it really really
- 51:33Speaker 2: shows you know what that's like. I'm a loner. I'm
- 51:37Speaker 2: happy going without talking to people for several days at
- 51:40Speaker 2: a time. But I also have movies, TV, my phone.
- 51:44Speaker 2: You know, people think I see stuff on like Facebook
- 51:47Speaker 2: or Instagram. It's like, would you stay in isolation for
- 51:50Speaker 2: a week or a month for like ten million dollars, bro,
- 51:52Speaker 2: you cannot survive that. You would go nuts. You would
- 51:55Speaker 2: not enjoy the ten afterwards, right.
- 51:59Speaker 3: Ten Yeah?
- 52:00Speaker 2: No, no, no, that's that that's meant to drive people
- 52:05Speaker 2: fucking nuts so.
- 52:07Speaker 3: And make people kill themselves. That's why it's there.
- 52:10Speaker 2: Yes, Now, So when it comes to movies based on
- 52:14Speaker 2: a true story, I've never had a problem with things
- 52:17Speaker 2: being made up for dramatic effect. Honestly, you know, these
- 52:19Speaker 2: aren't drug documentaries. Uh. This movie particularly had a lot
- 52:24Speaker 2: of stuff that was made up. Some of them I
- 52:26Speaker 2: don't really understand. I think it was it didn't really fit.
- 52:30Speaker 2: So for example, one particular example, they show a fight
- 52:33Speaker 2: between Denzel Sorry, Ruben Carter and Joey Giardello in nineteen
- 52:37Speaker 2: sixty four, and in the movie, you know, Ruben Carter
- 52:42Speaker 2: is shown to as a blowout wind but he gets
- 52:44Speaker 2: denied by the judges, and it's very clearly made to
- 52:48Speaker 2: see seem like it's a robbery, probably for reasons of racism.
- 52:52Speaker 2: But in real life, Joey Garedello won that fight easily,
- 52:56Speaker 2: and even Carner himself admitted that, you know, Jared Ell won.
- 52:59Speaker 2: So it got to the point where Joey Garedello sued
- 53:03Speaker 2: the goddamn movie production, like why, yeah, why would you
- 53:07Speaker 2: do that when the guy could still see it and
- 53:10Speaker 2: like be pissed, Like I'd be pissed and be.
- 53:12Speaker 3: Liked write history that ain't it?
- 53:17Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean and I and I know why they
- 53:20Speaker 2: did it because they wanted to show movie.
- 53:23Speaker 3: We understand.
- 53:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they're also they're trying to bring in issues of
- 53:26Speaker 2: racial prejudice, racism, etc. But I don't know, man, it's
- 53:30Speaker 2: it's that part takes place in the sixties. There's a
- 53:32Speaker 2: lot of examples of racism against black people in the sixties.
- 53:35Speaker 2: You could have.
- 53:35Speaker 3: Used and wa, yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Another same thing that Dan Hadea plays a cop, a
- 53:45Speaker 2: fake cop that they made up loosely based on the
- 53:47Speaker 2: real cop in the case, but he is in the movie.
- 53:50Speaker 2: He's arrest and Zone when he's a kid and keeps
- 53:53Speaker 2: following all all his life and has a grudge against them,
- 53:56Speaker 2: and the movie started implies that this guy is the
- 53:59Speaker 2: one working on putting den Zel in jail. But that's
- 54:02Speaker 2: not what really happened. The cop wasn't first met Ruben
- 54:06Speaker 2: Carter after the arrest. That thing I didn't really like, Sure,
- 54:10Speaker 2: do you want to make him a villain? But I
- 54:11Speaker 2: think it diminishes the racist system, And it kind of
- 54:15Speaker 2: says like, well, it was this guy because he's just
- 54:17Speaker 2: an asshole, Like it's this character is the villain who's
- 54:22Speaker 2: been you know, had had a heart on for putting
- 54:25Speaker 2: den Zel in jail this whole life. But that then
- 54:28Speaker 2: says that it wasn't the system. It wasn't the system
- 54:31Speaker 2: that was racist towards black and brown men and brown
- 54:33Speaker 2: people for decades. Right again, there's so many examples of racism.
- 54:38Speaker 3: That you could use.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Hell, you could have just taken a real example of
- 54:42Speaker 2: racism that happened to anybody else and put it in
- 54:45Speaker 2: this movie for dramatic effect, and I would have liked
- 54:47Speaker 2: it more so. Yeah, so I yeah, I think that
- 54:53Speaker 2: that's stumbled for it. But the movie as a whole,
- 54:56Speaker 2: amazing performance and look, I'm only human, know, I get
- 55:00Speaker 2: a heart. I was gonna choke up at the end
- 55:03Speaker 2: when you know he had his peel eventually. You know,
- 55:09Speaker 2: I really spoiler because this happened. And uh, as a
- 55:15Speaker 2: film kind of ignoring like the the rewriting of history,
- 55:21Speaker 2: it's awesome. It's it's really emotional, excellent performances, and I
- 55:26Speaker 2: think it's a recommend. We we rate movies out of
- 55:28Speaker 2: four gloves here, how would you recommend this one? Rate
- 55:31Speaker 2: this one? Sorry?
- 55:32Speaker 3: The acting part is like a four, right, Like the
- 55:35Speaker 3: acting and everything like a four. The movie plot, the
- 55:38Speaker 3: information itself somewhere between the three and a three point
- 55:42Speaker 3: two five, but the like, the acting was top notch.
- 55:45Speaker 3: Of course it's inzel so I'd go like a three
- 55:48Speaker 3: point six.
- 55:50Speaker 2: That's that is so funny because I was gonna say
- 55:53Speaker 2: three point six for the movie, and very specifically it
- 55:55Speaker 2: was gonna say acting is get the four four gloves
- 55:58Speaker 2: literally that's what I.
- 55:59Speaker 3: Was planning on saying.
- 56:00Speaker 2: So yeah, same thing. Yeah, you know it's I mean,
- 56:02Speaker 2: I think it is. It is. The movie is really
- 56:04Speaker 2: good as long as you remember that it's kind of
- 56:06Speaker 2: a bullshit compared to the real, the real story. But
- 56:10Speaker 2: I don't remember which movie Alec Baldwin said this in,
- 56:13Speaker 2: but he once said that's bullshit, but it's very good bullshit,
- 56:17Speaker 2: and I think that's that's kind of my uh what's
- 56:20Speaker 2: what i'd say about the Hurricane. But you know, if
- 56:24Speaker 2: you're a Denzel fan, you should, well, first of all,
- 56:26Speaker 2: you should have probably already seen this if you're a
- 56:28Speaker 2: Denzel fan, to be honest, but definitely check this one
- 56:31Speaker 2: out and check out Malcolm X. I haven't rewatched it myself,
- 56:35Speaker 2: but I remember being really good and uh yeah, pick
- 56:38Speaker 2: up the uh the Malcolm X four K this from
- 56:40Speaker 2: Criterion Collection.
- 56:42Speaker 3: Definitely.
- 56:44Speaker 2: All right, we're gonna get out of here, but first, Jamison,
