- 0:00Speaker 1: Now you can. You're a corresponding. Devin Gray is with
- 0:02Speaker 1: us this morning. Devin, good morning. The US is middling
- 0:05Speaker 1: in the UK's justice system.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Yeah, good, mind you Ryan. This will seem extraordinary to
- 0:13Speaker 2: some listeners, but the US government has blocked a British
- 0:17Speaker 2: court hearing from taking place on a British territory. It
- 0:21Speaker 2: does sound utterly bizarre, but we're talking here about a
- 0:24Speaker 2: British Indian Ocean territory, an island called Diego Garcia. Now
- 0:29Speaker 2: it's got a long complicated history, but it is British.
- 0:33Speaker 2: It took control of the Chagos Islands that was part
- 0:37Speaker 2: of Mauritius back in nineteen sixty five and then went
- 0:40Speaker 2: on to evict the population of more than a thousand
- 0:42Speaker 2: people to make way from military base. And it's the
- 0:45Speaker 2: military base, which yes, you guessed, is now American and
- 0:49Speaker 2: which the Americans object to this court hearing. The court
- 0:52Speaker 2: hearing is all about some migrants trying to make it
- 0:56Speaker 2: to Canada and they're on the island at the moment.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It was due to be a court in a British court,
- 1:02Speaker 2: but the Americans said, oh no, you darn't. We don't
- 1:04Speaker 2: actually think it's a good idea to have members of
- 1:06Speaker 2: the press here. We don't think it's a good idea
- 1:08Speaker 2: for all these lawyers to fly in. And because America
- 1:11Speaker 2: runs all the accommodation, the food and the transport, they
- 1:15Speaker 2: are quite simply able to say you're not coming on
- 1:18Speaker 2: the island. As I said, it's complicated, but it seems
- 1:21Speaker 2: an extraordinary state of play.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It certainly does. What about this investigation into the French
- 1:27Speaker 1: fire right, the National Rally over allegations of inappropriate financing.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Yes, so this is all aimed at Marine Lapenn She
- 1:36Speaker 2: is the leader of the National Rally party, of the
- 1:39Speaker 2: far right party in France that did so well in
- 1:42Speaker 2: the National Assembly elections just finished though did not get
- 1:45Speaker 2: a majority. But prosecutors in Paris and out saying they're
- 1:49Speaker 2: looking to allegations of embezzlement, forgery and fraud. And this
- 1:54Speaker 2: was all over her attempt to become president back in
- 1:57Speaker 2: twenty twenty two. Now for some they're thinking, hey, on
- 2:00Speaker 2: a minute, is this because they're trying to scuffer her
- 2:02Speaker 2: popularity because she did very well in these elections. But
- 2:06Speaker 2: the authorities say no, this is all about the fact
- 2:09Speaker 2: she's received loans in the past from Russia. And Hungarian banks.
- 2:13Speaker 2: The Russian loan was worth some eighteen million New Zealand dollars,
- 2:16Speaker 2: but that was all paid back last year. So the
- 2:19Speaker 2: investigations will go on and this particular court will judge
- 2:23Speaker 2: her and twenty four other party members in September. And
- 2:26Speaker 2: just briefly round before you go. Sad news for New
- 2:29Speaker 2: Zealand's Lulu Sun Running. I'm afraid a good campaign in
- 2:32Speaker 2: winwood and tennis but knocked out by the crow at
- 2:35Speaker 2: Donna Vikisch this morning. Our time court number one with
- 2:39Speaker 2: the roof on, we've had terrible weather. Having knocked out
- 2:42Speaker 2: Britain's Emma Redi Khana in the fourth round, she was
- 2:45Speaker 2: hoping to become the first qualifier to reach the women's
- 2:48Speaker 2: semi finals since nineteen ninety nine. I'm afraid it wasn't
- 2:51Speaker 2: to be. She got beaten five seven sixty fourth six ' one.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Devin Gray are UK your correspondent. She'll be back, don't
- 2:58Speaker 1: worry about that. It is tin away from For more
