- 0:00Our experience in the world is one of dualities.
- 0:04Hot and cold, wet and dry, happy and sad, love and hate, darkness
- 0:11and light, etcetera. We recognize that we cannot have
- 0:16the one without the other. The Chinese symbol of Yin Yang
- 0:22illustrates the intertwined nature of these dualities and
- 0:26that even in the greatest light there is a spot of darkness and
- 0:30vice versa. Once we recognize the nature of
- 0:34life as consisting of these dualities, the question then
- 0:38arises as to what to do about it.
- 0:41We seek happiness, we seek light, we seek harmony, we seek
- 0:46freedom, but we are all the time confronted with unhappiness,
- 0:52darkness, disharmony and bondage, et cetera.
- 0:58Many people have come to the conclusion that it is not
- 1:01possible to have one without the other, that the price of
- 1:04happiness is acceptance of unhappiness as a condition on
- 1:09occasion. Some go so far as to say we
- 1:12would not appreciate the positive side of the duality
- 1:17without the experience of the negative side.
- 1:21We can imagine and create fantasies about unmixed bliss
- 1:25and an existence without any of the negative poles of the
- 1:28dualities. Various religions have
- 1:31postulated heavens where the elect or the saved go after
- 1:36departure from this world to enjoy such a state of paradise
- 1:41in heaven, whatever the status of existence is in some other
- 1:46place or on some other plane, we are tasked with making sense of
- 1:52and responding to the conditions here in this world, this world
- 1:56of dualities. We thus need to determine how
- 2:00best to respond to those aspects we find uncomfortable or
- 2:03negative, as well as to understand the role they have to
- 2:08play in life here in the world we live in.
- 2:13If we try to fight the dualities, we quickly find out
- 2:17that we become upset, frustrated, despondent or
- 2:21depressed, as they cannot be eliminated from our lives.
- 2:26Some people preach a philosophy of Stoicism whereby we condition
- 2:31ourselves to accept the dualities without feeling
- 2:34oppressed, gaining strength in our ability to withstand their
- 2:38impulsion. Others suggest we rise above
- 2:41them, see and experience them, but not be moved or shaken by
- 2:46them, so that whether we judge something to be good or bad, we
- 2:51can benefit from its impact on our lives.
- 2:56We may find, if we look closely at our own responses to the
- 3:00dualities, that when we are experiencing what we judge to be
- 3:04positive responses, we tend to want to enjoy them and we do not
- 3:09tend to make serious efforts compared to times when we are
- 3:13under pressure of what we term negative responses.
- 3:17It is an answer to these negative times that we make the
- 3:20greatest efforts generally, and thus they become aids to our
- 3:26growth and progress. Srioro Vindo notes quote This
- 3:33world has a double aspect. It seems to be based on a
- 3:36material inconscience and an ignorant mind and life full of
- 3:41that inconscience. Error and sorrow, death and
- 3:45suffering, are the necessary consequence.
- 3:49But there is evidently too, a partially successful endeavour
- 3:53and an imperfect growth towards light, knowledge, truth, good
- 4:00happiness, harmony, beauty, at least a partial flowering of
- 4:07these things. The meaning of this world must
- 4:11evidently lie in this opposition.
- 4:14It must be an evolution which is leading or struggling towards
- 4:18higher things out of a first, darker appearance.
- 4:22Whatever guidance there is must be given under these conditions
- 4:26of opposition and struggle, and must be leading towards that
- 4:30higher state of things. It is leading the individual
- 4:34certainly, and the world presumably, towards the higher
- 4:38state, But through the double terms of knowledge and
- 4:42ignorance, light and darkness, death and life, pain and
- 4:47pleasure, happiness and suffering, none of the terms can
- 4:51be excluded until the higher status is reached and
- 4:54established. It is not and cannot be
- 4:58ordinarily a guidance which at once rejects the darker terms,
- 5:03still less a guidance which brings us solely and always
- 5:07nothing but happiness, success and good fortune.
- 5:12Its main concern is with the growth of our being and
- 5:15consciousness, the growth towards a higher Self, towards
- 5:20the Divine, eventually towards a higher light, truth and bliss.
- 5:26The rest is secondary. Sometimes a means, sometimes a
- 5:31result, not a primary purpose. End Quote Reference Sri Robindo
