- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37I'm happy with being able to go in there and wipe down the table
- 0:41because I'm doing it as unto the Lord, because I'm doing this
- 0:45unto the Lord. I'm happy to get my brother a
- 0:47cup of coffee or to take their plate up after they're finished
- 0:50eating and throw it away so they don't have to.
- 0:52I'm happy doing that. And there was a time when I
- 0:55expected somebody to do that for me.
- 0:57What a boldness that gives us in the faith to see this is the
- 1:01work that God did in me. This is the power of God working
- 1:06in me. What changes when you start
- 1:09doing even the smallest task as unto the Lord?
- 1:12In today's message, Pastor Louis shares the joy of wiping tables,
- 1:17fetching coffee, or clearing plates simply because it's done
- 1:21for Jesus. Once he expected others to serve
- 1:25him, but God transformed his heart.
- 1:27Now every humble act brings happiness because it's offered
- 1:32to the Lord. Boldness and faith grows when
- 1:35you see what He's done inside. How do you serve others today,
- 1:39knowing every act is unto the Lord?
- 1:42Well, let's join Pastor Lewis in First Timothy Chapter 3 with
- 1:45today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:49Someone has an interest in being a Deacon, that's fine.
- 1:51Let's just observe for a while, that's all.
- 1:53It doesn't have to put them right in because we have a need.
- 1:55Just take some time, let's observe them.
- 1:56Let's get to know. The Bible says that we should
- 1:58know those who labor among us. So that's why it's important
- 2:02that they are use time for testing.
- 2:04In many ways and many times I've found that the men who are
- 2:08brought into this ministry or men who are ordained to be
- 2:11deacons or men who have been doing that anyway, they've been
- 2:14basically functioning that way anyway.
- 2:15They didn't have a title, but they were always doing it.
- 2:17There are always men who were walking around picking up and
- 2:20cleaning up behind the congregation or helping when
- 2:22something is broken and it needs to be fixed.
- 2:24They're always one of the people who are volunteering to do it,
- 2:27helping to set up tables when we have a feast or we have a lunch
- 2:30or a picnic or something like that.
- 2:32They're always involved in that, always one of the first people
- 2:34to say, what can I do to help? So they've always been doing it.
- 2:37That personality, that spirit have always been there.
- 2:40So it wasn't a reach to bring that person and to officially
- 2:44ordain that person as a Deacon. And what we found even in
- 2:48biblical, we see that men who are found faithful that have
- 2:51been promoted to other positions because as a Deacon doesn't mean
- 2:55that once you're called to the Deacon for this season, doesn't
- 2:58mean that these men are always going to be deacons.
- 3:00Some of these men are going to be called maybe to a pastor or
- 3:03elder position. Maybe they're going to be called
- 3:04that way. Maybe the Lord is already
- 3:05working in the hearts of some men because they have a caller.
- 3:08They sense God's calling. So it's not that they're because
- 3:11they're a Deacon today that that's going to be where they
- 3:13are forever. And the Bible record shows that
- 3:16men have been called to other ministries.
- 3:19For example, we know that Moses who was a shepherd, he was
- 3:22called to be a leader. David, who was a shepherd was
- 3:25eventually called to be a leader.
- 3:26Joshua, the same thing. He was a servant for Moses and
- 3:29eventually was called to be the leader of the people of Israel
- 3:33taking them into the land of Canaan.
- 3:35And even in the New Testament we see where one of the seven
- 3:38Philip who was initial Deacon or served in as one of the seven
- 3:43who was called out man who was filled with wisdom and knowledge
- 3:46in the in the Holy Spirit. We know that he preached in
- 3:49Samaria. It was Philip who was the one
- 3:51who actually went to Samaria and preached where many people got
- 3:54saved. God called him from that and
- 3:56took him to a lonely Rd. on the side of the road somewhere and
- 3:59preached to a eunuch and he received faith.
- 4:02So God used him in many ways. God can do that.
- 4:06In fact, Philip now is referred to in the Bible often as a
- 4:11evangelist. We also understand Stephen who
- 4:14was a Deacon or served in that capacity.
- 4:17And God used him to preach a sermon where the Pharisees were
- 4:22struck, hitting to the heart. Some believed, some believed,
- 4:25but it also caused him to be the first martyr of the church.
- 4:29But he preached before he left this world because that he was
- 4:33called to another order. So we have to understand that
- 4:36these men are called to a calling at that particular time
- 4:41doesn't mean that that's where everybody's going to stay.
- 4:43And that's the same with you. Whatever God has you doing, just
- 4:45be faithful in what God is have you doing right now.
- 4:48Just be faithful over that because you never know where God
- 4:51is taking you. Anything that we do, we got to
- 4:53keep this in mind. In God's economy, anything that
- 4:56he calls you to do is significant.
- 4:58We really have to not look at what the position is.
- 5:01This isn't like a corporate world where it's more status to
- 5:04be here than it is to be there. We've got to stop looking at
- 5:08things that way. That's not the way it is in
- 5:10God's economy. God is just as interested, and
- 5:15he finds his calling to someone who's done nothing.
- 5:18For example, we talked about the story of Athaliah, who was a
- 5:21very nasty queen who tried to wipe out, tried to wipe out the
- 5:26sons of David to try to take out that line.
- 5:29And you understand taking out that line with me and taking out
- 5:32the line of Jesus Christ, But God used Jehoshapha, a woman who
- 5:37you never even heard that name again, use this woman to
- 5:40preserve an entire nation. That woman is just as important
- 5:45to God is as David is to God when he was able to be one of
- 5:50the best kings, one of the most spiritual kings that Israel ever
- 5:54had. She is just as important to God.
- 5:57So anything that God calls us to is significant, and we should do
- 6:01it with all of our heart as unto Him, as unto him.
- 6:05So then we go on and we now look at verse 11.
- 6:08And in verse 11 he says that now he's talking about their wives.
- 6:12He said their wives should be reverent, not slanderous,
- 6:14temperate, faithful in all things.
- 6:17Now some believe that he's not only just talking about the
- 6:21wives of deacons, but also that this may even be a separate
- 6:24office of deaconess. And the Bible does talk about
- 6:28Phoebe, who was actually a Deacon, what he referred to as
- 6:31Deacon. It actually was the word
- 6:32minister in our translation in New King's version, it's
- 6:36minister. But in some translations in
- 6:38Romans chapter 16, verse one, where Paul talks about receiving
- 6:43them and being hospital to her, that's Phoebe.
- 6:46And she was actually a minister. She was she was a servant in the
- 6:50faith. She was a servant in the faith.
- 6:52So some think that this is talking about women who have
- 6:56taken on to position of a Deacon, that we don't have
- 6:59female deacons here. We do have women who serve.
- 7:02Do we have servants here? We have women who serve
- 7:05different capacities, just as Phoebe serve, but we don't call
- 7:08them deacons. But women who are the wives of
- 7:11deacons is what this is referring to here.
- 7:14Their wives must be reverent. That means that they must be
- 7:18women who are respected in the ministry and also women who are
- 7:24respectful in the ministry, not slanderers.
- 7:28And we must understand that word slanderers, It actually means
- 7:32devil, but it doesn't mean that that's the person of the devil.
- 7:35It's the character of a devil because a slanderers one who he
- 7:39speaks falsely about someone and God hates that.
- 7:44He hates that when someone speaks falsely about someone
- 7:47else. So he's a slanderer and God
- 7:50doesn't like slandering temperate meaning that she has
- 7:53to be a woman who has self-control over her passions
- 7:57and self-control over the way that she presents herself when
- 8:01she's in partly sober minded, making clear decisions and
- 8:04faithful in all things. She must be faithful to her
- 8:07husband, faithful to her children, faithful to building
- 8:11up her home, faithful to the ministry that she's in in the
- 8:14church. She must be faithful to these
- 8:17things. And then it goes on in verse 12,
- 8:20it said, let the deacons be the men of one wife.
- 8:22We already talked about that with the elders.
- 8:25Deacons have to be men of one wife.
- 8:27First of all, we know that they can't be polygamous.
- 8:29I mean that, you know, you can't walk around with seven and eight
- 8:32wives. And we, we, we, we don't do
- 8:34that. So no, we can't be polygamous.
- 8:38But it also means that if a man is married and he divorces his
- 8:42wife, if he divorces his wife and his wife is still with us,
- 8:45OK, this man is not to be remarried.
- 8:48But if a man's wife dies and she passes and he becomes a widower,
- 8:54yes, that man can then get married or get remarried.
- 8:57And again, this is for your elders, pastors and deacons.
- 9:01This is church order. This is just church order.
- 9:04And then he says at the bottom of that he had be ruling their
- 9:08children and their own houses well.
- 9:10Well, if they're going to take care of some of the
- 9:12administrative financial issues here in the church, we have to
- 9:16be secure that that person is able to take care of his own
- 9:19finances. Well, in his own home.
- 9:21He can run his own house. He can take care.
- 9:23He's paying his bills. He's he's taking care of
- 9:26expenses that he has. He's orderly taking care of
- 9:29those things. His children are in order.
- 9:32They are they are in subjection to him and to the faith that he
- 9:37is a good example and with the structure of his home, a godly
- 9:42structure of his home. And then in verse 13, it says
- 9:46for those who have, and this is a promise that God now gives to
- 9:51deacons for serving in his capacity.
- 9:53And this is really, this is really compassionate because I
- 9:56look at this and I say, well, you know, there are probably
- 9:58some people who may feel that, well, I'm only a Deacon.
- 10:02You know, I'm only on this committee or I'm only serving on
- 10:05that committee. And this is kind of a witness
- 10:08that God doesn't see anything as insignificant.
- 10:11And he says here in verse 13 for those who have served well as
- 10:16deacons obtain is 2 things that he says that they receive when
- 10:20they serve well as deacons. The first thing is that they
- 10:24obtain a good standing, and that's a good standing of
- 10:27respect in the congregation which in which they serve.
- 10:31And a lot of these men also have good reputations in their
- 10:34communities. I grew up with a man who was a
- 10:37Deacon, and we actually called him Deacon every day that we saw
- 10:40him. And this was a man who was well
- 10:42respected, very well respected, not only in church, but also in
- 10:46the neighborhood in which we we live.
- 10:47People had a lot of respect for them.
- 10:49So there's a respect there. And they obtained that good
- 10:52name, that good that, that he's that respect.
- 10:54But there's also eternal rewards that comes with that as well,
- 10:58eternal rewards which are greater than rewards that
- 11:00they'll receive here. And that is for their faithful
- 11:03service at the judgment seat or the Bema seat when Jesus Christ
- 11:08will judge all of what we've done in this body.
- 11:12One thing I've learned is that God rewards faithfulness.
- 11:15He rewards it either here or He reward it when we see Him in
- 11:19glory. But He rewards faithfulness.
- 11:21It's always worth it to be faithful and to be named
- 11:26faithful, to be seen as faithful.
- 11:28In Romans 1410, he said we should all stand before the
- 11:31judgement seat of Christ. And then in First Corinthians 5
- 11:35and 10 says, for we must all appear before the judgement seat
- 11:39of Christ, that each one may receive the things that are done
- 11:43in the body according to what he has done, whether it's good or
- 11:49bad. And this is something I want to
- 11:52emphasize here, faithfulness, it is rewarded and it's rewarded.
- 11:58If it's not rewarded here, it will be rewarded when we see the
- 12:00Lord. And I want to just emphasize the
- 12:03fact that at that particular time that we see the Lord, it
- 12:07won't matter what the position was that we served in our
- 12:11church. When we stand before the Lord
- 12:14and he looks at me, I want trust me.
- 12:16We want him to say well done, faithful servant, right?
- 12:22We want him to say well done, faithful servant.
- 12:24He's not going to say well done, Pastor Louis Harris.
- 12:28He's not going to say that. He's not going to say well done
- 12:32Gina, worship leader. He's not going to say that.
- 12:35He's not going to say well done, Dylan, you know, mighty man of
- 12:39the technology of Calvary child, he ain't saying all of that.
- 12:43He's going to say well done, good and faithful servant.
- 12:48That's what we all are. We are servants.
- 12:50Take away the title or the position name.
- 12:54We're servants and that's the way that we should be doing
- 12:57every single thing that we do in the House of God with the heart
- 13:02of being a servant. And that just blesses the entire
- 13:05body. People see that.
- 13:07It blesses them to see someone serving with nothing in their
- 13:10heart, personal things in their heart of trying to be seen or
- 13:14trying to be accomplished or trying to get fame or be
- 13:17popular. None of that's in the heart.
- 13:20Just serving, looking after each other, helping each other
- 13:24selfishly for whatever the needs may be.
- 13:27That's a blessing. And then he goes on here, the
- 13:31bottom of that verse, it says, and it also gives good standing,
- 13:33but also great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
- 13:38When we serve faithfully, we do have a level of confidence in
- 13:45the Lord. Not in ourselves, but it's a
- 13:47level of confidence in the Lord. It's a security that we have in
- 13:51the Lord that gives us boldness to talk about our faith to other
- 13:55people and to walk out that faith.
- 13:59It's a boldness I can seek God for more.
- 14:02God did this in me if He humbled me to the point where I used to
- 14:07work in jobs where I was the boss, I was the district
- 14:09manager, I was the CEO, I was this, I was owner.
- 14:13And now I'm happy with being able to go in there and wipe
- 14:16down the table because I'm doing it as unto the Lord, because I'm
- 14:21doing this unto the Lord. I'm happy to get my brother a
- 14:24cup of coffee or to take their plate up after they're finished
- 14:27eating and throw it away so they don't have to.
- 14:29I'm happy doing that. And there was a time when I
- 14:31expected somebody to do that for me.
- 14:34What a boldness that gives us in the faith to see this is the
- 14:37work that God did in me. This is the power of God working
- 14:42in me. So I get boldness to go out and
- 14:45share the gospel with other people.
- 14:47The gospel will change your life, and I have proof, right?
- 14:52Look at what He did for me. So then we go to verse 14.
- 14:55We're about to wind down verse 14.
- 14:58It says these things. I write to you, though I hope to
- 15:01come to you shortly. But if I am delayed, I write so
- 15:05that you may know how to conduct yourself in the House of God,
- 15:08which is the Church of the living God, pillar and ground of
- 15:12truth, the blessing here. And this is something that we
- 15:16have to look for because we can read over this and say that,
- 15:20yeah, Paul is just writing another letter.
- 15:22But the way we have to look at this is the fact that God made
- 15:26it. So Paul would have to write the
- 15:28letter just like he did with the Thessalonians.
- 15:30He couldn't go back to the Thessalonians because of the in
- 15:32the Thessalonians couldn't go back there because of the
- 15:34persecution. So he wasn't able to go back
- 15:36there. So he had to write a letter to
- 15:38him, and that letter that he wrote to them is not just read
- 15:41by the Thessalonians, but it was read to us.
- 15:44The same thing is here when he says here that I write these
- 15:48things. So that though I hope to see you
- 15:50shortly, he knows that there's a chance that I might not get back
- 15:53to you. Because the devil was always
- 15:55throwing things in Paul's way. Whether it's persecution or
- 15:59shipwrecks or imprisonment or something, he's always throwing
- 16:03something at Paul. And Paul realized that I might
- 16:06not be able to get back. But the good thing about this is
- 16:08that what the devil meant to be for evil, him not getting back
- 16:12to the Ephesian church, God used it for good.
- 16:15So not only is there Ephesians reading this letter, not only
- 16:18are they understanding what the church order is, many
- 16:22generations after Paul is getting this letter, including
- 16:26us today. So the devil didn't stop
- 16:28anything. He just helped it and he thought
- 16:31he was doing it for evil. Thank God there's things that
- 16:34God is doing in your life. Enemies coming and he said man,
- 16:37I'm under attack and Satan things that Oh yeah, I got them.
- 16:40I got them I got them frustrated I got them scared, I got them
- 16:43fearful, but all that's doing was pushing you closer to the
- 16:46Lord. You were getting on your knees
- 16:47longer you were getting in your word longer you were studying
- 16:51deeper. You were seeking God at levels
- 16:54that you had never saw them before.
- 16:56All the devil did was bring you closer to the Lord and then he
- 17:00goes on he says I write this and say that you know how to conduct
- 17:02yourself in the House of God, the Church of the living God,
- 17:05the pillar of ground and truth. So he gives us three pictures of
- 17:08the Church of God. First of all, he says the House
- 17:10of God. This is not the House of God.
- 17:12What I'm standing on where you're sitting at, the structure
- 17:15that we come into every week, this is not the House of God.
- 17:18The House of God are the people who are in this structure.
- 17:21We are the House of God. And first Peter, he says that we
- 17:24are the spiritual house. We are the stones built up, a
- 17:27spiritual house unto God. We are the House of God.
- 17:31And he then he says that in any House of God, if we're a House
- 17:35of God, then we are a family. And thank God that we are family
- 17:38because that's why we treat each other like brothers and sisters.
- 17:42We're family. It tells us that in the word of
- 17:45God that we are like family. That's why we over in the book
- 17:50of Titus, I believe, where he talks about how we treat the
- 17:53older adults. We treat them like fathers,
- 17:55older men, we treat them like fathers and we treat the the
- 17:58older women like mothers. And we are to treat the younger
- 18:00men of the church like brothers and we treat the younger women
- 18:04of the church like sisters because we're family.
- 18:07We're family. That's why we said to pick up
- 18:09the phone and call anybody, said, look, I need you to pray
- 18:11for me and I'm praying for you like I'm praying for my own
- 18:13sister or brother. I need help.
- 18:15No one ever needs to be. Somebody gets pregnant in here.
- 18:18And we've had some little experience with that.
- 18:20Somebody gets pregnant in here, they can pick up the phone.
- 18:22And there are people who bring mill trains that will get them
- 18:25mill trains. People have problems with
- 18:27different issues that come up and people in this church will
- 18:30bring them food. That's a family.
- 18:32That's a family. So then he goes on, he says, the
- 18:35Church of the living God. We don't serve a dead God.
- 18:39We serve the living God. We don't serve an idol.
- 18:41See, this comes from the fact that they were serving Diana.
- 18:44She's a statue, you know, out in front of the the temple, the
- 18:47temple of Diana. And that's what they were
- 18:49serving. Paul said, no, we serve the
- 18:52living God. You can call Diana all day long.
- 18:55She ain't going to be able to say nothing.
- 18:56She can't hear what you're asking her.
- 18:58She can't respond to you. She can't do none of that.
- 19:01But I dare to call on the Lord. He is a prayer answering God,
- 19:04and we've seen those prayers and hear many times those answer
- 19:08prayers. And then he says the Church of
- 19:10the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
- 19:13And that's what the church is. The church is the pillar and
- 19:16ground of the truth. Pillars hold up things.
- 19:19It holds up structures, and the church holds up the word of God.
- 19:23It holds it up and it holds it forth and it's a ground of
- 19:27truth, the foundation of truth. It's in the church, in the
- 19:31church body in US. And he says great is the mystery
- 19:35of godliness and that means God likeness.
- 19:38Great is a mystery of godliness. God was manifested in the flesh.
- 19:43And we read about that back in John chapter 1 when he talked
- 19:47about the word was with God and the word was God and in the
- 19:50beginning the word was God and words was with God in the
- 19:54beginning. And then the word was made flesh
- 19:56in John chapter one verse 14, and the word was made flesh.
- 20:02And then he talks about the fact and that's the godliness.
- 20:04That means the whole character of God was made flesh in Jesus
- 20:10Christ. And then he said justified in
- 20:13the Spirit. When Jesus got baptized in
- 20:15Matthew 4, the Spirit came down and it settled upon Jesus Christ
- 20:20and he was seen by angels. And there was several times that
- 20:24Jesus was seen by angels. The one time he was seen by
- 20:27angels is when he was in Matthew chapter 4, when he went through
- 20:32the temptation. He was seen by angels because
- 20:34after Satan left him, it was an angels that came and ministered
- 20:38to him. He was seen by angels when he
- 20:40was in the garden, when he was praying, according to Luke 22
- 20:43and 43. They came and minister him
- 20:46afterwards. And then in the resurrection he
- 20:48was seen by the angels that had actually witnessed him coming
- 20:52out of the tomb. He was seen by angels and then
- 20:55he was preached on among the Gentiles.
- 20:57And that's exactly but the apostles did.
- 21:00They went and preached in all these Pagan and Gentile areas.
- 21:03They preach the word of God, they preach Jesus Christ.
- 21:07And who is it that we preach Jesus Christ?
- 21:10And we are Gentiles. We were preached too.
- 21:13As Gentiles. We were preached too.
- 21:16And now we go out and we share the gospel with others and then
- 21:20it goes on and says he was believed on in the world.
- 21:23And that's the response. We are the example of him being
- 21:27believed on in the world. And then of course, he was
- 21:29received up into glory. And you know what?
- 21:32One day we too are going to be received up into glory.
- 21:35Jesus was received up into glory because he was righteous.
- 21:38He was righteous and he had did all that God had called him to
- 21:41do. We are going to be received up
- 21:43in the glory because we have the righteousness of Jesus Christ,
- 21:47because it was given to us. We are declared righteous.
- 21:49We were justified in the faith. We are declared righteous and we
- 21:54to the church, the believing church is going to be called up
- 21:58and received up into glory. And not only that, but Jesus
- 22:02Christ is coming back, you guys. He's coming back and he's coming
- 22:05back with power, and in the same way that he left, he left here
- 22:10in the clouds. They saw the clouds receive him
- 22:13up. The same way the other righteous
- 22:15men were received up. Elijah who was received up, and
- 22:19also we know Enoch was received up.
- 22:21He walked with the Lord and he was no more.
- 22:23The Bible says they're received up.
- 22:25We're going to be received up. The Bible says we're going to be
- 22:28risen up. The dead is going to rise first,
- 22:30but then we are going to come together and be received up into
- 22:33Jesus Christ and meet Him in the air.
- 22:36We don't sorrow over death like others who have no hope.
- 22:40We don't sorrow like that because if we believe that Jesus
- 22:43died and rose again, he's going to bring with him those who died
- 22:47in Christ Jesus. So we don't sorrow over that.
- 22:51We have a future, and that future is when Jesus comes back
- 22:54for his church to bring us into the clouds to where he is.
- 22:58We remember that Jesus was taken up into glory.
- 23:02The whole character of God was manifested in the flesh and we
- 23:06remember, Lord, that you were justified by the Spirit.
- 23:09Lord, you were filled and the Spirit indwelled you.
- 23:12Just like we pray and we look for the Spirit to indwell us the
- 23:16many things that Jesus did, through the Spirit of God, we
- 23:20too are able to be empowered to live holy through the Spirit of
- 23:25God. We know that He was seen of
- 23:27angels. We know that He was preached on
- 23:30among the Gentiles and we thank God that there was someone who
- 23:34preached to us as Gentiles. They didn't keep the gospel away
- 23:39from us because we weren't Jewish, but we were preached to
- 23:42and it was Jesus Christ that was preached to us.
- 23:45Amen. Lord bless you.
- 23:49You've been listening to Pastor Lewis Harrell here on Living
- 23:52Waters of Grace. We're digging into all that Paul
- 23:56shared with Timothy in the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:00Timothy was commissioned to do the following, fight the good
- 24:03fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were
- 24:07also called, and have confessed the good confession in the
- 24:11presence of many witnesses. Timothy would be carrying on
- 24:16what Paul had taught him and continuing on in ministry, even
- 24:20though Paul knew that more hardships would come for
- 24:23Timothy. This is the Christian life.
- 24:26It's not glamorous. It's not some celebrity status,
- 24:31It's hard fought, it's gritty, it's unpopular, but it's worth
- 24:36it. Do you believe that today?
- 24:38Are you willing to fight the good fight even at the cost of
- 24:42earthly pleasures? Living the life of a follower of
- 24:45Jesus will have its heavenly rewards.
