- 1:32first of nineteen forty nine is The Saint Goes Underground. The Adventures of the
- 1:57Saint starting Vincent Price. The Saints, based on characters created by Leslie charteris
- 2:10unknown to millions from books, magazines and motion pictures. The robin Hood of
- 2:15Modern Crime has now transcribed for radio, starring Hollywood's brilliant and talented actor Vincent
- 2:21Price as the Saint. Anything wrong, Captain, nothing serious, mister Templar,
- 2:34just coming down here for a check. Go on as soon as we
- 2:36can. Oh, and where is here? Ned'stone? New Mexico used to
- 2:39be a big silver mining town. But not just not a little town,
- 2:43I guess, although I did notice there's a carnival playing over on the edge
- 2:46of this emergency landing strip. Now, how long are we to enjoy the
- 2:50hospitality of Headstone? Oh? Two or three hours long? Up to see
- 2:53the town, have dinner if you like, Sorry to delay, sir,
- 2:57All right, all right, Captain, I'm seldom bored strange town. Or
- 3:00you better go back and fasten your seat. Mister camp were coming down now
- 3:04right, I'll see you later. Well, good evening, Saints. You
- 3:23know me yet I don't seem to record your face, Harry Kelly, and
- 3:29you don't recall my face because we've never met. But I've seen many pictures
- 3:31of you, and so I recognized your meeting. Well that's very flattering.
- 3:35Tell me, mister Kelly, how can I get into town. You can
- 3:38find a camp on the other side of the carnival planning on staying long,
- 3:43Not at all should I. On the contrary, I was just going to
- 3:46suggest that I doubt if Heedstone would welcome the presence of the saint. Just
- 3:51a friendly remark you onnerst un naturally, and if I may be permitted,
- 3:54a friendly question, why are you telling me this? Just an interest in
- 3:59the continued help of my fellow human. If you have any trouble and tim
- 4:02look me up. Anyone can tell you what a find I'm The Purling show
- 4:06is just about to start. See little Fatima, the girl who shakes and
- 4:11shivers like a pol pull of jelly. Only one dime ten cents, the
- 4:15tenth part of a dollar for you. I read the paths, the present
- 4:24and the future. Learn your fortune, young man, I already know it.
- 4:29Grandmother. I'm destined to meet a tall, dark and beautiful woman.
- 4:32I'll settle for nothing left. I see strange lines on your face, young
- 4:38man. I will tell your fortune without charge. Give me your hand.
- 4:44I see danger. Beware of a blonde young woman. She will bring you
- 4:49death and the worst ways of dying. Grandmother, I see danger much danger
- 4:56for one with a halo about his head, then death unless he travels.
- 5:01I see. I think I'm beginning to get the idea. You might tell
- 5:05your crystal ball that I'm beginning to be interested too. My grandmother and made
- 5:11the thing. Bless you, Oh thank you? They do you suppose you
- 5:21can drive me somewhere that serves a good dinner? Sure, silver Dollar Hotel?
- 5:29You know, I was just sitting there, a commuter with nature about
- 5:31how many guys there are who blow their wad to watch some dame do a
- 5:35holder or won't spend a dime on a hack? Do I detect a touch
- 5:39of Brooklyn? How could you miss? That's me? I'm Ziggy from Flatfoot.
- 5:45I used to drive a hack in Brooklyn. Now I own the only
- 5:47hacking Headstone. It's like, you know, I ain't seen a Brooklyn bridge
- 5:53for ten years since I come out here for my health. I always say,
- 5:58it's a smart man who knows when it's healthy to get out of town?
- 6:00Meaning what does everything have to mean? Something? May I mind my
- 6:06own business? I stay healthy. That's why I'm living in Headstone instead of
- 6:11underworld, I seem. But if you didn't mind your own business, I
- 6:14suppose you'd give me some advice about leaving Headstone? Is that it? No?
- 6:18No advice, man, That's part of minding my own business. Headstone
- 6:24is a great place the strangers to visit if they paid off their insurance.
- 6:41Here you are? Wait, then, very nice dinner? My check?
- 6:44Please? No, no, no, thank you? Keep the change.
- 6:49Hello. Well, well this is a surprising hotel. First a beautiful dinner
- 6:55and then an even more beautiful blonde. May I sit down? By all
- 6:59means? Missus? Eddy Calmley. You are Simon Templer. I should have
- 7:02worn my dark glasses. But now that the truth is out, you might
- 7:05as well call me Simon. All right, Simon? Now how did you
- 7:10know who I am? Now? Don't tell me that you were just passing
- 7:12and recognized. Well, Ziggy told me that you were here. He owns
- 7:15and drives the taxi here in Headstone. I know I shouldn't look a gift
- 7:18blonde in the hair, But why did Ziggy tell you I was in here?
- 7:23Well, Ziggy knows that I need help, and he thought that is,
- 7:26since you're the saint, you might help me. Well. I have
- 7:30been known to help beautiful blondes on occasion. But tell me why you should
- 7:34need help, Eddy. Someone's been trying to kill me. There should be
- 7:39a law against that. Are you sure. I've been shot at twice and
- 7:43everybody here has been very unfriendly except Ziggy and a man named Harry Kelly.
- 7:47I've noticed the unfriendliness in this town, but being unfriendly towards you is obviously
- 7:53an indication of insanity. Please don't joke about it. I'm frightened, all
- 7:58right. Now tell me about it. Well. My father was known as
- 8:01silver Slim Conny. He lived here for years, but he sent me east
- 8:05to school when I was very young, and I didn't come back here until
- 8:09recently. My father died about a month ago. He was broke and all
- 8:15he left me was his old silver mine. He called it the Betty Mine
- 8:18after me and I take it. Somebody wants the mine? No, No,
- 8:22the mine is completely worthless. There hasn't been any silver in it for
- 8:26years. But my dear, you were shot at twice. Have you any
- 8:30idea who did the shooting? No, but it might be the same man
- 8:33who told me to get out of town. Oh who Mike McCarthy. Siggy
- 8:37says he's an Eastern gangster who has been living out here for several months?
- 8:41Will you help me? Mister Simon, Well, I've never been able to
- 8:46say no to a pretty girl. You mentioned a man named Harry Kelly before.
- 8:50Just who is he? He knew my father. He's been very friendly
- 8:54to me, although he thought I ought to leave town too. I've met
- 8:56mister Kelly and he cheats me very much, I think. All right.
- 9:03Oh, just a minute, there was some red dust on your coat.
- 9:07Oh thank you. Viggy apparently doesn't get enough passengers to keep his cab dusted.
- 9:16Did you say Ziggy was parked outside in his giant He was when I
- 9:20came in. Oh there he is, yes, looking exactly as if he
- 9:24were back in Brooklyn. And Diggy was she found. Thanks for your bird
- 9:28dogging, which I must admit in this case has done much to overcome any
- 9:31natural prejudice against cab drivers as I might have say. Do you know where
- 9:37Harry Kelly lived? And let's go there? Hey, don't you ever clean
- 9:41out this hack? What's all this? Dost? Who knows? Maybe it
- 9:46was that redhead that hired me yesterday, so she had the And Viggy you
- 9:50missed your calling. You're funny as an undertaker well, now, Viggy,
- 9:56I don't suppose you'd care to tell me why you warned me to get out
- 10:00head down? Got me all wrong saying I wasn't warning you. I was
- 10:03just talking about myself. And I don't suppose you'd care to tell me why
- 10:07somebody took pot shot at miss Connolly here and told her to get out of
- 10:11town too? Me, I don't know nothing, like I was telling you,
- 10:15saying, I mind my own business. Maybe you stay ignorant that way,
- 10:18but it's healthier and I like it like that. And in that case,
- 10:22why did you send miss Connolly into Bee? Me? Wow? Like
- 10:26you can see, she's a pretty little pigeon. She needs to know some
- 10:28guy will help him. Now, it ain't no secret that the Saint goes
- 10:31around mixing in other people's business. So I tell her to see you?
- 10:35And who told you? I was the thing? I got eyes in my
- 10:39head? Ain't I? Like I said? I used to hack in Brooklyn?
- 10:43I got it wrong? What about this Mike mccott picked me smart money?
- 10:48Say huh A lot of guys have crossed his bed at once to get
- 10:52what I mean? What about uh? Harry Kelly vocal stuff nice schmoll.
- 10:58But no more. You're doing all right for a guy that doesn't know anything.
- 11:03You got me wrong, path, Ziggy. He looks people over,
- 11:07but he don't see nothing except one guy is tough, but another guy is
- 11:11small, and maybe another guy is to know. I really don't think we
- 11:15should try to involve Diggy Simon. He's been very nice as it is,
- 11:18he's got something foul. I ain't really equipped for it, because the way
- 11:22you're headed, only a saint could feel at home. Here we are saying
- 11:41Kelly lives on the first floor in the ring. Oh thanks, wait for
- 11:45it, Diggy. We've got a couple of other calls to make after this.
- 11:48Don't worry. Oh wait, you get any trouble, just yell.
- 11:50Then I'll drive over and tell the sheriff. I heard somebody yell, PA,
- 11:54thank foul. Come on, Betty, and I hope our friend is
- 11:58in and that he talked. Yeah, strange Harry telling you to come and
- 12:03see him if you had any trouble. If he had any connection with me,
- 12:07then why hasn't he said something to me? Well, sounded to me
- 12:11like a cautious man. Maybe he did know something that didn't want to say
- 12:15anything. Unless he felt sure something was going to be done. I we'll
- 12:18soon know. Yes, who is it? Simon Templer? The fight just
- 12:22a minute? Oh, shots were in that room. This is no time
- 12:26for conversation, John. We're going now like this, Kelly, Oh,
- 12:35Simon, Kelly, Kelly, this is Simon Templer. Yes, Kelly,
- 12:43the saint who shot you? But mine? Kelly? Well, Betty,
- 13:01he isn't going to tell us anything now. Killer did a very thorough job.
- 13:09Window open. Must have shot from here. Here's a shell out the
- 13:13fireplace. But what was he saying? Sounded like like spin. Come on,
- 13:18Betty, We're going to spread a little saintliness. And I think I
- 13:22know where to begin. But Viggy, didn't you hear anything? Well?
- 13:37I noticed some noise, but like I I know, you mind your own
- 13:39business. Are we going to the Sheriff's time? No, not yet,
- 13:43VIGGI who's the estare in this time? All man matters? The office is
- 13:46closed now, but he lives right ahead there, that big white house.
- 13:48Okay, stop there. I'd like to satisfy a little curiosity about that mine
- 13:52of yours. I'll be right back. You STI here, Betty, What
- 14:13do you want mister Matthews. Who else should be here? It's my house,
- 14:16ain't it? What do you want? My name is Diamond Templer.
- 14:20I wanted to ask you if you know the Connolly silver mine. I know
- 14:22every mind within two hundred miles to hear young fella. Hey, ain't that
- 14:26Betty Connolly is sitting up there in that taxi? And why can't she tell
- 14:31you about the mine? She owned it? Well, she has told me.
- 14:33But I just wanted to check about the possibility of a mistake. How
- 14:37much silver would you say? There wasn't the Connolly mine about enough to put
- 14:41in your eye and still leave room for your finger. Couldn't there be a
- 14:45hidden vein in it? Nope, there ain't been enough silver around here to
- 14:48make a dime for years and years. Could there be anything else of value
- 14:52in it? Mud and water? If you call that valuable you sure,
- 14:56of course, I'm sure, young fella. I've been here, man and
- 15:00boy for seventy years, and I ain't got no time to stand around answer
- 15:03and durn fool questions. Goodbye, well, goodbye, and Betty you may
- 15:13be right, oh man, Matthew says the mine is worthless too, So
- 15:18Diggy can take us to see Mike McCarthy. Are you sure you want to
- 15:20go there? Say? I was you? I get on that plane.
- 15:22It's leaving pretty soon. Noziggie, I've decided not to leave Headstone just yet.
- 15:26Later you can drive me over to Albuquerque and I'll take the cheap the
- 15:30rest of the way. Okay, charm, it's your funeral, Simon,
- 15:46Please be careful. Don't you worry Betty the Halo whereas Benevolent Association would be
- 15:52very upset if anything happened to me, I'll be right off. Yeah,
- 16:03I'm looking for Mike McCarthy where you found him? My boy scout training had
- 16:07never fails. My name is Simon Templar the Saints. I've been known by
- 16:12that name. So what That's a very interesting question. I must trying to
- 16:15think of an answer sometime. Meanwhile, I thought you might like to know
- 16:19that I heartily disapprove of you are telling a certain Thaty Connolly that you ought
- 16:23to leave town. What's the girl to you? It's my business. I
- 16:27could make it mine, and if I do, your halo is going to
- 16:30slip down and start choking it. I thought bullets were more in your line
- 16:33mean, and what eating the shots fired at missus Connolly and a little gunning
- 16:37job only a few minutes ago. I didn't do any gun and, but
- 16:41I'm liable to if you don't beat it. And you sound so sure of
- 16:44yourself, Michael, that's because I got more in my hand than an itching
- 16:47palm. It's very pretty gun, Mike. But I'm very much afraid that
- 16:52nothing will satisfy my curiosity short of knowing why you want to get Miss Connolly
- 16:56out of town. I got answers for those guys. Six. I just
- 17:00stand right there, stay away from that death saint worry Mike. I have
- 17:04no interest in the desk at call, but I do have an interesting Miss
- 17:07Connolly. And now, Michael, I'll did you a du what happens tinla?
- 17:26Oh? Not much. I'm afraid the conversation is just getting interesting.
- 17:29When Mike had a sudden attack of drops me. That's funny. I never
- 17:33heard of him being sick. It's because you mind your own business, ziggy
- 17:36like you tell me Betty worries that it's over mine of yours about two miles
- 17:41out of town. Any place in town where we can rent a car?
- 17:44Oh? Why I have a car? What I feel the prospecting urge coming
- 17:48over me, Ziggy can take us to Miss Connolly's car, and then we
- 17:51can dispense with your valuable service. What's wrong with Mike care Nothing, Ziggy.
- 17:55It's just that I don't like people looking over my shoulder, especially when
- 17:59I visit alone mine in the company of a beautiful girl. Well, here's
- 18:18the batty mine. Although I don't know why you want to see it,
- 18:21right, I don't know either. As long as I'm here, I might
- 18:25as well take the forty cent tour. Certainly, sir. Right this way,
- 18:29this old cable car goes down into the mine. All we have to
- 18:32do is stand on the platform and pull the cable. It works with balance.
- 18:34Wait, I'll find out on the forty cent tour. We give the
- 18:40exact distance three hundred and fifty four feet six inches. Thank you, and
- 18:45thank you for having electric lights in a mine that hasn't been worked for years.
- 18:49Oh, the mine has its own battery. See, here's a bulb
- 18:53on the car. Shall we go down? What are we waiting for?
- 18:56Let's go Maybe the light will go out this whole little like this. I've
- 19:00been waiting for you too, Well, Michael McCarthy, I was wondering if
- 19:03we were going to have your coming and this time wise, I don't try,
- 19:07and I don't tell me Michael that you're going prospecting with it. I'm
- 19:11riding down with it, but I'm coming back alone. Start the car down,
- 19:15Saint, but don't try no tricks. You have a suspicious mind.
- 19:18Mine. Well, here we go. Call out your floorers, please,
- 19:23mezzanine ladies, underwear, glosses and etcetera. You'll be singing a different tone
- 19:27pretty soon, Saint. You both had your chance to leave town your way.
- 19:32Now you're going to leave my way. Sorry, don't be Betty.
- 19:37This is my first ride. I'm an open cable car and it'll be your
- 19:40last. I wouldn't be too sure. We missed that cable breaks before we
- 19:44get to the bottom. What are you talking about a little crowded here for
- 19:52one too? So I guess the one and I have to do. Oh
- 20:03terrible. That's all right, Timon. It could have been you. He
- 20:10almost knocked you off the platform two with the padded shoulders in my coat,
- 20:15I helped them hit the side. Look at your shoulders, they're covered with
- 20:19dirt from the sides of the chafe. H it's red dirt. Wait a
- 20:25minute, Well we can go back up, Betty. Mike doesn't need our
- 20:32health, and I don't need anybody to answer questions anymore. Simon. I'll
- 20:48never understand you. Why did you look at the dirt on your coat and
- 20:52say you didn't need any more questions? Because that dirt was red cellf eyed
- 20:56Betty, and it explains why Mike was so anxious to run you out of
- 20:59town. Well, I don't see how red sulfite is used in paint,
- 21:03but that doesn't make it valuable. Red sulfide is also cinnebar or from which
- 21:07we get mercury, and that is pretty valuable. Evidently your mind is rich
- 21:11in cinebar, so it's worth a lot of money. Betty. Oh,
- 21:14then that was what Kelly was trying to tell us when he said sin.
- 21:17Yes, he was trying to say cinebar. How can I ever thank you,
- 21:21Simon? Well, I have a couple of ideas on the sefty,
- 21:26But now people would say I was chasing you for your money. So I
- 21:29guess you can just see me off on the train. We'll stop in town
- 21:32and have the diggy drivers to Albuquerque. Oh, but I'll drive you now,
- 21:34I insist on taking a cab. I don't want you coming back alone.
- 21:38I may want to change my mind about fortune, like I said,
- 21:57Saina, to see you leave. But it's Tomas, just plenty of BoNT
- 22:02it's changes. What's you ought to take? Miss Conley Whiting? But she
- 22:04doesn't have to go now, Ziggy and decide she's rich, is what?
- 22:07Yes, Diggy, we found out the dead mine is valuable after all?
- 22:11You mean you found silver? No mercury? Oh the stuff they put into
- 22:15MoMA. That's the tough diggie that it's used for a lot of other things,
- 22:18particularly in wartime, and it's worth a lot of money. Oh what
- 22:22do you know? So that's why Mike was trying to make you leave.
- 22:25That's well did you stop? And Telly Sheriff? We didn't have time,
- 22:27but I'll see him when we go back. That's pretty nice for you or
- 22:32anybody. Oh here we are just in time too, the Chief Center.
- 22:36Very nice timing. Gee, thanks Betty for keeping my force to visit the
- 22:40Headstone from being tall. Oh Simon, well why don't you stay in Headstone?
- 22:47I won't know how to run the mine or what to do with the
- 22:48money or anything. You'll learn you know what to do when you get back
- 22:53to town. Yes, but what will the sheriff to leave me? I
- 22:56mean about Mike McCarthy killing Harry Kelly. I don't think he will, since
- 23:00Mike didn't kill Kelly. But Kelly was shot with an automatic dejected a shell
- 23:06on the fireplace. Remember, but Mike McCarthy carried a revolver, you thought,
- 23:10Yes, will the sheriff. The sheriff will believe when you show him
- 23:15that the gun that killed Kelly is in Viggie's podcast. What what are you
- 23:18talking about? You knew about the cinebarrow or in the mine. You carried
- 23:22some of it away to be tested in your cab, and there was red
- 23:25dust in it, which you tried to explain with a corny gag. You're
- 23:29crazy. Harry Kelly had an idea what was going on, so you slipped
- 23:33around to the back while we were at the front door and killed him.
- 23:36All right, wise guy, you're so smart? What about Mike. Mike
- 23:37was working for you, But Simon Viggy told me that you were in town.
- 23:41Sure, he couldn't be sure that I wasn't here to break up his
- 23:44little scheme. So the smartest thing to do was to get us together so
- 23:47he could watch both of us. He thought I would use his cab as
- 23:51I did, and it would be easy. But he slipped up when he
- 23:53sent Mike out to the mine ahead of it. Viggy was the only one
- 23:56who knew where we were going. Okay us, Like you said, you
- 24:07should have followed your own advice about minding your own business. He's all your
- 24:15beddy. The gun that killed Kelly is now I'm the deep beside him.
- 24:18All you have to do is turn the body and the gun over to the
- 24:22sheriff, and from there on in he'll mind Ziggy's business for him. But
- 24:26don't worry, Betty, I'll start back some day to make sure that Denis
- 24:30is in conjunction with mercy. You have just heard another adventure of the Saint,
- 24:48the robinhood of modern crime. Now here is our starves. Then some
- 24:52prise, ladies and gentlemen, how many times there have been men just like
- 24:56Ziggy led into crime by infaciable greed forgetting the simplest truth. So aptly phrased
- 25:02by John Dryden, murder may pass unpamished for a time, but tardy justice
- 25:07will overtake the crime. This is Vincent Price extending a personal invitation to all
- 25:11of you to join us again next week at the same time for another adventure
- 25:15of the Saint. Good Night. Tonight's script of The Saint was written by
- 25:32Michael Cramoy. Our cast included Harry Bartel, Barney Phillips, Colleen Collins,
- 25:36Fred Howard and Tony Barrett. The music was composed and conducted by Harry Zimmermann.
- 25:41The Saint is a James L. Saffier Agency production and was transcribed and
- 25:45directed by Thomas A. Mcavity. Don't forget that the Saint comic books are
- 25:48on sale at all news stams. You're announcer Merril Rosts. This is a
- 25:55mutual broadcasting system. Welcome back. Long time listeners of our show will remember
- 26:08Tony Barrett as the voice of Mark Donovan on the Adventures of Frank Ray.
- 26:17So I guess this Cabby was an evil Mark Donovan as Donovan was also a
- 26:22Cabby who ended up going on globe trotting adventures with Frank Ray. Beyond that,
- 26:26this is just a wonderful episode writing and plus Vincent Pass's acting is to
- 26:33perb It's got a light feel, but there's a clever twist thrown in.
- 26:37This is just similarly very engaging radio, a very strong mix of actor and
- 26:44part Now we turn to listener comments and feedback, and we have a couple
- 26:48listener comments regarding the episode The Miracle Tea Party. Michael says, not regard.
- 26:56Not only is this a faithful adaptation of the same short story, but
- 27:00it is the first time I've ever heard Leslie Charter is on the air,
- 27:04and that is a nice feature of these. It doesn't happen with a whole
- 27:10lot of programs, but when you actually get to hear a mystery author,
- 27:14that's definitely something special. I think the other time that occurs to me is
