- 15:32Speaker 4: I was walking along in the maid when all of

- 15:50Speaker 3: out of here in a week when you're all rested
- 15:52Speaker 3: and heel a little plastic surgery. I knew it. Okay,
- 16:04Speaker 3: finished is right. The medics can tell us which one
- 16:07Speaker 3: of them is Nick the Knives.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Or the eminent mister Queen can come up with one
- 16:11Speaker 4: of his brilliant suggestions.
- 16:12Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, I have one, but no, Dad,
- 16:16Speaker 3: you turned some as I doesn't blute know the psychiatis first.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I don't want to make this suggestion except as a
- 16:21Speaker 3: last resort. The men into just take a dinner.
- 16:35Speaker 4: When we got your call to come to headquarters.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Doctors are time and I make the knife Jake Ship, Summers,
- 16:40Speaker 3: Blueto and Hodges up to the State Hospital in Stone
- 16:42Speaker 3: with ten days ago and they've been under observation ever since.
- 16:44Speaker 3: We got a lot of fancy and reports on't but
- 16:46Speaker 3: nothing that says this guy Isnck the Knife.
- 16:48Speaker 4: So it's your move, mister Queen.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Now what do you have in mind? Strong trap but
- 16:54Speaker 3: kind of traps? What's obvious that Nick the knife isn't normal.
- 16:57Speaker 3: He gets murderous impulses on the impulse sets them. He's
- 17:00Speaker 3: you have to use his knight. He coun't resisted. What's more,
- 17:02Speaker 3: he gets those impulses regularly, all thirty two attacks for
- 17:05Speaker 3: one week apart. But now it's two weeks since he's
- 17:08Speaker 3: attacking a step light there girl, he's overdue. If right
- 17:12Speaker 3: now tonight he thought he was free and had a knife,
- 17:16Speaker 3: well then I'm glad he's not. Oh you mean yes,
- 17:20Speaker 3: we can wink up at a trap right at Stone
- 17:21Speaker 3: which state hospital on it? See it's seven o'clock now
- 17:24Speaker 3: a fast co We can make it in two hours,
- 17:26Speaker 3: so it'll be dark by the time we get there. Darkness,
- 17:29Speaker 3: lonely country woods all around. It's a perfect setup. Saying
- 17:32Speaker 3: that is an idea inspector, you can take up a
- 17:34Speaker 3: big squad. It is bluteness and missing nodges. Say that
- 17:37Speaker 3: there's some knives around they get swipe before we turn
- 17:39Speaker 3: them close. Have each one tailed by three or four
- 17:40Speaker 3: of our best men. Son, Hi buy it? Uh, there's
- 17:45Speaker 3: only one thing.
- 17:46Speaker 4: You bet You've got everything for your trap up there,
- 17:48Speaker 4: But the bait, mister queen, a pretty young girl.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Well, are you looking at me.
- 17:57Speaker 4: Oh no, I should say not if you have any
- 18:00Speaker 4: fantastic idea.
- 18:01Speaker 3: That I got it all figure out. You don't think
- 18:03Speaker 3: I'll put you in any real danger.
- 18:04Speaker 6: Now, there's no use talking.
- 18:05Speaker 3: I can refuse to do any danger, but you don't
- 18:08Speaker 3: have to be.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Relax Sits me here in this glade, all alone under
- 18:34Speaker 4: a bright moon at midnight, with a nice towing maniac
- 18:38Speaker 4: probably in the woods looking for me.
- 18:40Speaker 6: He expects me to relax.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Right here behind this so close I can touch you.
- 18:45Speaker 4: So why did I have let you talk me into that?
- 18:50Speaker 3: Myself? Detective tree surrounding the slave, all of us on
- 18:55Speaker 3: the knight has a chance to get near you. You.
- 18:57Speaker 4: I suppose he's given you a written guarantee.
- 19:03Speaker 6: Sorry, someone coming right here.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Something's gone wrong?
- 19:09Speaker 3: You got your guy?
- 19:10Speaker 8: Yes?
- 19:10Speaker 3: Uh? Keep behind me here he comes. I oh, it's
- 19:17Speaker 3: like to feel what it's like. So I just got worried.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Then I struck again again, another successful attack. Their dad
- 19:24Speaker 3: back in New York and the same park with the
- 19:25Speaker 3: Stepney girl got it in the city. But how I know? Io?
- 19:28Speaker 3: Who knows? How? Come on back the head quarter? Pity? Well,
- 19:42Speaker 3: what's the hospital say? Girl just died and spruck the Oh,
- 19:47Speaker 3: this is a copper parler. Alight, it's officer. Indicate again, Oh, sir,
- 19:51Speaker 3: Inspector Queen, I've made my red report. I want to
- 19:54Speaker 3: hear it. Yes, sir, I was making my usual quarter
- 19:57Speaker 3: of ten rounds in the park there in the park,
- 19:59Speaker 3: in the amaze, Inspector, I wasn't in there three minutes
- 20:01Speaker 3: when I heard a girl scream from inside the Mazon. No,
- 20:04Speaker 3: no sergeant outside in this case. I ran out and
- 20:07Speaker 3: started looking, screamed and stopped. Took me a few minutes
- 20:10Speaker 3: to locate her. Finally I found her Francis Colbert, the
- 20:14Speaker 3: first Avenue, Manhattan. By that time she badly no that
- 20:18Speaker 3: I it was Nick the Knife's work. And again both
- 20:20Speaker 3: wrist slashed and the girl's face all cut up, just
- 20:23Speaker 3: like the others. It was Nick the Knife, all right?
- 20:25Speaker 3: That was that time again, I was, She screamed at
- 20:27Speaker 3: ten minutes of ten, Inspector, don't tell me eth Nikki.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Now I know who Nick the Knife is.
- 20:39Speaker 7: All right, So Ellery Queen knows enough to salt the case,
- 20:43Speaker 7: do you. Well? We're going to see if one of
- 20:46Speaker 7: our armchair detectives, uh knows joining us now? Is Daniel
- 20:53Speaker 7: Burke from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, marking Queen analysts. Thanks so much, Dan,
- 21:01Speaker 7: coming on and you've listened to the story. Could you
- 21:04Speaker 7: tell me who you think is Nick then?
- 21:07Speaker 10: I sure, Adam, Well, I think it is actually officer Endicotte.
- 21:15Speaker 10: He was the only other person in the park in
- 21:18Speaker 10: the maze at the time of the of the murders,
- 21:21Speaker 10: and Hillary Queen was very clear about going to the
- 21:27Speaker 10: I guess it's the hospital, the asylum where the suspects
- 21:31Speaker 10: were being held. He said he was left at seven,
- 21:34Speaker 10: would be there by nine. By the time Endicott said
- 21:39Speaker 10: the murder happened, it was around quarter to eleven, So
- 21:42Speaker 10: there's no way that the suspects in the hospital, in
- 21:44Speaker 10: the hospital could get could get back to the park
- 21:48Speaker 10: by that time. So I think it's the I think
- 21:50Speaker 10: it's actually the police officer.
- 21:52Speaker 7: All right, Well we will see if you're right. Dan.
- 21:55Speaker 7: Thanks so much for joining us.
- 21:58Speaker 8: And I do.
- 21:59Speaker 7: Here's my pleasure, and I didn't want to encourage listeners.
- 22:04Speaker 7: If you are interested in being an armchair detective when
- 22:07Speaker 7: we run into one of these segments that are missing,
- 22:09Speaker 7: feel free to email me Box thirteen at Great Detectives
- 22:13Speaker 7: dot net. Armchair detectives do receive their choice of one
- 22:18Speaker 7: of the seven e books of default. All I needed
- 22:22Speaker 7: to know I learned from Dragnet, available in e bookstores everywhere.
- 22:26Speaker 7: But now let's go ahead and get back to ellery Queen.
- 22:33Speaker 3: I didn't understand it. Then, about three suspects can possibly
- 22:36Speaker 3: be nick the name?
- 22:37Speaker 4: Why not inspectors? Suppose one of them managed to give
- 22:40Speaker 4: his trailers a slip tonight and came back to the
- 22:42Speaker 4: city impossibly Nikki.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Just before we started out for Stonewood State Hospital, Ellarry
- 22:46Speaker 3: said it was seven o'clock, that it was a two
- 22:48Speaker 3: hour drive by fastcar. That means the earliest we could
- 22:51Speaker 3: have got there was nine bin. Even if you're figured
- 22:53Speaker 3: that we let them go as soon as we got
- 22:55Speaker 3: there at nine o'clock, what's the earliest one of them
- 22:57Speaker 3: could have got back to the city the same two
- 22:59Speaker 3: hours as drive we eleven o'clock? But when was the
- 23:02Speaker 3: attack of the city park tonight at ten minutes to
- 23:05Speaker 3: ten over now before any of the three could possibly
- 23:07Speaker 3: have gotten there? Boy, three suspects and three alumni. Wait, oh, what.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Idiots we've been there? Weren't just three suspects, there were
- 23:16Speaker 4: four four, But the.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Only ones we found in the maze after the attack
- 23:21Speaker 3: on Jane stopped. They were snow summers, trees, hodges, and
- 23:24Speaker 3: butcher Butner.
- 23:25Speaker 4: Oh, no, Sergeant, there was one other man in the maze. Oh,
- 23:29Speaker 4: you never dream of suspecting him, the policeman who supposedly
- 23:33Speaker 4: found Jane's unconscious.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Body officer in the cort me, miss me Nick the knife.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Yes, with three of the four possibilities eliminated, the fourth
- 23:42Speaker 4: must be guilty.
- 23:43Speaker 3: And that's you. How's the logic, mister Queen? Tell her
- 23:46Speaker 3: dad and the cut can't possibly be nicked? The knife?
- 23:49Speaker 3: Nick the Knife began operations in New York City lest
- 23:51Speaker 3: Christmas Eve. And I told you myself, mess p that
- 23:54Speaker 3: and the Cot had just rejoined the force. He stopped
- 23:57Speaker 3: the Nazi bullet a couple of weeks before v Day.
- 23:59Speaker 8: And that was my head.
- 24:01Speaker 3: So he was in the American Army in Germany at
- 24:04Speaker 3: least until he end the rapersh could Endicot have been
- 24:06Speaker 3: making attacks in New York once a week for over
- 24:08Speaker 3: thirty weeks beginning last Christmas Eve.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Oh, Exit Officer Endicott.
- 24:15Speaker 3: I'm awfully sorry, it's quite all right. Miss Where does
- 24:18Speaker 3: that Leavis for suspect and all four eliminated. Why do
- 24:21Speaker 3: you say there are four suspects that m because there
- 24:25Speaker 3: are only four people in the mage during the attack
- 24:26Speaker 3: on Jane Stepley, there were five. I'm who is the fifth? Salary?
- 24:32Speaker 3: Jane Stepley, herself, James Staplay, herself, but her stroll. She
- 24:39Speaker 3: was the one attack for the knife, and she attacked
- 24:41Speaker 3: herself for the knife. Really, no other possible conclusions. Only
- 24:44Speaker 3: five people were in the maze during the attack and
- 24:46Speaker 3: four eliminated it. So the fifth must be Nick the knife. Yes,
- 24:49Speaker 3: even if the fifth was the victim, It's not so strange.
- 24:53Speaker 3: This homely woman, brooding over unattractiveness, became psychotic and began
- 24:57Speaker 3: hunting an attacking girls who were pretty. And what happened
- 25:01Speaker 3: into the boarding house at which room came a new
- 25:03Speaker 3: border a policeman. Now you yourself, Eticotte told me how
- 25:07Speaker 3: you'd keep running into her in the house. That's how
- 25:09Speaker 3: you recognized her in the maze. To Jane Stepley's disordered mind,
- 25:13Speaker 3: the sudden arrival of a policeman to live in her
- 25:15Speaker 3: boarding house meant only one thing that she was being watched.
- 25:18Speaker 3: In cunning desperation, she decided to banish the policeman's non
- 25:22Speaker 3: existent suspicion that she was nick the Knife by staging
- 25:25Speaker 3: an attack on herself on his beat, for he'd be
- 25:28Speaker 3: sure to find her bleeding and unconscious, and she very
- 25:32Speaker 3: nearly got away with it, poor thing.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Thank you, ellery queen, and good night. There's the state
- 25:47Speaker 2: for a why now closing the scarred doors of the
- 25:50Speaker 2: mystery players and saying good night to your own sleep tide.
- 25:54Speaker 2: This is the Armed Forces Radio Service.
- 26:48Speaker 4: This is Andrew J.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and a Man.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And his Wife.
- 26:53Speaker 3: You're listening to the great detectives of Old time radio.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Welcome back once again. Thank you so much to our
- 27:06Speaker 1: armchair detectives. Definitely appreciate you. As I'm recording this segment
- 27:14Speaker 1: before we actually record the armchair detective segment. I'm not
- 27:19Speaker 1: sure where they were right, but I'm certain they did
- 27:22Speaker 1: a good job and appreciate them filling in for what
- 27:25Speaker 1: the Armed Forces Radio Services cut out. This is an
- 27:30Speaker 1: interesting case, a kind of softer attempt at a Jack
- 27:36Speaker 1: the Ripper story, and an interesting murderer, even if it's
- 27:40Speaker 1: a somewhat a weak motive. I liked Nicky's theory. It
- 27:46Speaker 1: made perfectly good sense until you considered the fact that
- 27:51Speaker 1: we had all been told earlier in the program didn't
- 27:55Speaker 1: think too much of the motive or the modus operandi
- 28:00Speaker 1: of the New York Police Department. Let's find out what
- 28:06Speaker 1: the victims saw before we bring in all of our suspects. Now, no, no,
- 28:11Speaker 1: that'd be silly. Let's just bring the suspects in and
- 28:15Speaker 1: see if she can't identify them, whether she claims to
- 28:18Speaker 1: have seen them or not. And then poor Nicky getting
- 28:22Speaker 1: called in as a decoy. You know, you have to
- 28:25Speaker 1: do that sort of stuff when you work for Nick Carter.
- 28:28Speaker 1: But the New York Police Department they have policewomen even
- 28:33Speaker 1: back then who could do that sort of work. And
- 28:35Speaker 1: a final note, when you're doing voice acting and you're
- 28:40Speaker 1: playing a murder suspect, that's not really the time to
- 28:44Speaker 1: break out your lu Costello impersonation. I mean, I was
- 28:49Speaker 1: sitting there listening to that, and I was laughing too
- 28:52Speaker 1: order to take it seriously. Well, we turn now to
- 28:55Speaker 1: listener comments and feedback, and David says, am, I I'm
- 29:00Speaker 1: the only one who's creeped out by the promo Seltzer train.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I know it's supposed to be a train chanting the
- 29:07Speaker 1: product in a happy way. But to me it just
- 29:10Speaker 1: sounds eerie and disturbing. Of course I'm basing that on
- 29:14Speaker 1: current standards. Who knows, maybe people like that sort of
- 29:18Speaker 1: thing oh so many years ago. Well, thanks so much
- 29:21Speaker 1: for the comment, David, and I think people had mixed
- 29:26Speaker 1: feelings on trains. I find it kind of cute and endearing,
- 29:32Speaker 1: but I can get people who don't. And actually, there
- 29:37Speaker 1: was a series, a horror series known as The Mysterious Traveler,
- 29:44Speaker 1: and there's a train at the part of that, and
- 29:48Speaker 1: it's a bit more of a sinister feel, so it
- 29:52Speaker 1: does depend on the context of it. Thanks so much
- 29:55Speaker 1: for the email, David, and that will do it for today.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Join us back here tomorrow for the Adventures of Philip Marlowe,
- 30:01Speaker 1: and next Tuesday, it's another adventure with Ellery Queen. In
- 30:05Speaker 1: the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen at Great
