- 0:31Speaker 1: Steven m cash.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Happy New Year's everybody, and welcome to Drinking With the podcast,
- 0:37Speaker 2: where we raise a glass to the movies that have
- 0:39Speaker 2: reached the legal drinking age. I'm your host, Steph mccash
- 0:41Speaker 2: or the Sobros Network, and join me as we embark
- 0:44Speaker 2: on a cinematic journey through the classics of yesteryear, celebrating
- 0:47Speaker 2: their twenty first first days and styles, from iconic blockbusters
- 0:50Speaker 2: to hitting gyms. Each episode will toast to a different
- 0:53Speaker 2: film that has stood the test of time and shaped
- 0:55Speaker 2: our cultural landscape. So grab your favorite beverage or the
- 0:58Speaker 2: one we've curated for this episode, and let's dive into
- 1:01Speaker 2: the nostalgias explore movies that are finally old enough to
- 1:04Speaker 2: join us for a drink. Joining me at the bars
- 1:06Speaker 2: we always do, as always are the two best people
- 1:10Speaker 2: I can think of to stumble out of the bar
- 1:12Speaker 2: after a long discussion of movies. First, as the resident
- 1:14Speaker 2: film critic of the Sobros Network, mister Brandon Vick who's
- 1:17Speaker 2: also a member of the Southeastern Film Critics Association, a
- 1:21Speaker 2: board member of the Music City Film Critics Association, and
- 1:23Speaker 2: most importantly, the birth giver of the Vick Flicks and
- 1:26Speaker 2: Cinema Chronicles podcast that you could hear right here or
- 1:29Speaker 2: wherever you get your podcast from. And joining him is
- 1:32Speaker 2: the man behind the Sobros Network, the eic, the glue
- 1:35Speaker 2: of the brand, Jennificionado, multiple cat lover and all around
- 1:40Speaker 2: football wordsmith and budding sports talk radio starff I may
- 1:44Speaker 2: say so myself here at one o four point five
- 1:47Speaker 2: the zone and probably hopefully you know, I'm not trying
- 1:52Speaker 2: to read in my no stre damas stuff, but maybe
- 1:54Speaker 2: a happy Titans fan here in as we end the
- 1:57Speaker 2: year going into January, missus Stony Keeley is here with
- 2:00Speaker 2: us as always, gentlemen, how are we doing as we
- 2:03Speaker 2: approach the new year?
- 2:05Speaker 1: Pretty good? Mcashuh, I don't know, uh, I don't know.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I you know what I'm gonna say, I'm gonna be
- 2:10Speaker 1: optimistic and say I'm a happy Titans fan. Right now.
- 2:13Speaker 1: This program's headed in the right direction. They've got their
- 2:16Speaker 1: franchise quarterback, the offense is clicking. They just need a
- 2:20Speaker 1: couple more pieces to really become a contender. That's all.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I think. Will Levis is going to break some.
- 2:24Speaker 1: More records.
- 2:28Speaker 2: They just traded for Micah Parsons that just came across
- 2:32Speaker 2: the timeline before we record.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, silly, Jerry Jones. This is my favorite time
- 2:39Speaker 1: of year. I feel like we say it every year,
- 2:40Speaker 1: but the time, by the time this episode is actually released,
- 2:45Speaker 1: I will be on my holiday break from writing and
- 2:49Speaker 1: podcasting outside of my obligations to one four to five
- 2:53Speaker 1: the Zone you never saw, but all the other stuff, Well,
- 2:58Speaker 1: we'll take a little bit of break and my feet
- 3:00Speaker 1: up and just kind of reflect on the year that
- 3:03Speaker 1: was and planned for the year ahead. Which is why
- 3:05Speaker 1: I liked this episode is because now we've had this
- 3:08Speaker 1: entire season of this show, we've talked about all these movies,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and now we kind of look back and examine what
- 3:14Speaker 1: we missed and examined the year that was, in this
- 3:17Speaker 1: case two thousand and.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Four, and some that we probably should have watched instead
- 3:20Speaker 3: of others.
- 3:21Speaker 2: That's probably fair as well. We are indeed recapping the
- 3:25Speaker 2: year that was two thousand and four, and two thousand
- 3:28Speaker 2: and four was a year of global transformation and cultural milestones,
- 3:31Speaker 2: like in politics, George W won reelection in the US election,
- 3:36Speaker 2: defeating John Kerry.
- 3:38Speaker 1: The obviously the first election that I really paid attention
- 3:44Speaker 1: to as like, oh, I wasn't I had turned eight.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I don't remember if that was the first election I
- 3:54Speaker 1: could vote in, or if it was just that I
- 3:57Speaker 1: was old enough, like I thought, Hey, I should be
- 3:59Speaker 1: paying attention and caring about this stuff.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I remember thinking why is George W. Because I didn't
- 4:04Speaker 3: know much about politics, I thought, why is George W
- 4:07Speaker 3: running against Jim Carrey? Until I saw a debate and
- 4:12Speaker 3: I thought, oh, this is this is not what I thought.
- 4:14Speaker 2: It's weird.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Ma, So I just went on ahead and just like
- 4:18Speaker 3: just decided not to vote ever again good to confusing, Yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 3: but things have turned out great.
- 4:25Speaker 1: This was a transformative year for us. This was the
- 4:27Speaker 1: year that we graduated high school. Yeah, a lot going
- 4:31Speaker 1: on that year.
- 4:31Speaker 3: We started college, had big boys, Yeah, started smashing beer
- 4:36Speaker 3: cans on our heads.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I moved from Atlanta to South Carolina in two thousand
- 4:42Speaker 2: and four, so that.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Was all, oh wow, Sorry, I wasn't done with our
- 4:46Speaker 3: bacheldors just throwing use condoms all over the place. Who
- 4:49Speaker 3: cared where they went.
- 4:51Speaker 2: And by yous, you mean you just like blow them
- 4:53Speaker 2: up like balloons and then just let them go.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I threw use condoms. I didn't say they were mine.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Oh I'm we lived in a dorm.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's crazy. It's just so crazy.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Oh, Murphy's Borough, it's a fine place.
- 5:06Speaker 1: That is Harvard of the South.
- 5:08Speaker 3: That's right.
- 5:09Speaker 2: I hear people say that, and I.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Think they and I just saw pictures of a beautiful football.
- 5:16Speaker 1: They upgraded their facility facility thing.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Thanks Kevin Bayern, the Kings of a Conference USA. Lookout right,
- 5:23Speaker 2: that's right. To get his back off track, we could
- 5:26Speaker 2: touch on some more highlights or low lights from the year.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Two thousand and four, the European Union saw its largest
- 5:32Speaker 2: expansion ever, welcoming welcoming ten new member countries, reshaping the
- 5:37Speaker 2: landscape of Europe. But tragedy did strike in December, with
- 5:41Speaker 2: the Indiana Ocean tsunami, one of the deadliest natural disasters,
- 5:45Speaker 2: claiming over two hundred and thirty thousand lives across fourteen countries.
- 5:50Speaker 3: My god, fourteen countries.
- 5:53Speaker 1: That I've forgotten about that. Yeah, shame on you, shame
- 5:56Speaker 1: on me. You're right, that's true.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Two thousand and four was the birth year of Facebook
- 6:03Speaker 2: or my Facebook or the Facebook as it was called.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Ayah, and that was back when you had to actually
- 6:09Speaker 1: be a student.
- 6:10Speaker 3: At Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yep.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 2: So that happened in a Harvard dorm room. And then
- 6:15Speaker 2: meanwhile NASA's Mars Rover Spirit and Opportunity began sending back
- 6:20Speaker 2: studying images from the red planet.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Wow, what a time to be alive.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Yeah, to go back to the Facebook. Do you do
- 6:29Speaker 1: you remember having those accounts and then when they announced
- 6:33Speaker 1: that they were going to start letting everybody have Facebook accounts?
- 6:36Speaker 1: Was there a part of you that was just kind
- 6:38Speaker 1: of like, oh, oh, they're letting the peasants in now.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I remember thinking, oh shit, my parents can get it. Yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 3: which they they they did, but it was about twenty
- 6:47Speaker 3: years later and when I am not when I quit that.
- 6:54Speaker 1: You used to treat Facebook like an art medium. It
- 6:59Speaker 1: was a stage for you. You would post some of
- 7:01Speaker 1: the most ridiculous stories yeah as your STATUSSM and never
- 7:04Speaker 1: tell anybody you were joking.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Yeah, those were real bits, good bits. Yeah, and your
- 7:10Speaker 3: top is that my space?
- 7:12Speaker 1: My space was.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Okay Facebook, Yeah, but you know what I didn't start.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I didn't even do Facebook until I think I was
- 7:22Speaker 3: a sophomore or junior in college.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it was in college. It was twenty two thousand
- 7:28Speaker 1: and six was when my account was Yeah.
- 7:30Speaker 3: So like it's not I when we first started, I
- 7:33Speaker 3: didn't really. I was the last one in our group
- 7:37Speaker 3: to text. I was probably the last one in the
- 7:38Speaker 3: group to join Facebook. If I text, it would say yes, yeah,
- 7:43Speaker 3: and then I called but but yeah, no, but I
- 7:47Speaker 3: don't even God the how innocent things used to be.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Yep, not that that question was directed at me, but sir,
- 7:58Speaker 2: I was twenty nine years old and well removed from college,
- 8:02Speaker 2: so I didn't have the opportunity until the peasants were
- 8:05Speaker 2: allowed into the Facebook. Because I'm old.
- 8:11Speaker 1: My apologies, I didn't.
- 8:14Speaker 3: I didn't really think much about it because I knew
- 8:15Speaker 3: people of a certain age don't I to use a computer.
- 8:19Speaker 3: They'll never get on, They'll never get in here. Ever.
- 8:22Speaker 2: H pop culture wise, we had uh, the Incredibles and
- 8:26Speaker 2: Shrek to dominating the box office throughout the year. Yeah,
- 8:30Speaker 2: Friends aired its final episode, marking the end of a
- 8:33Speaker 2: TV era, and then that was back then.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I felt like it went on a few more years.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Two two thousand and four, they pivoted.
- 8:43Speaker 3: That's that's I have not watched. I may have watched
- 8:45Speaker 3: five episodes of Friends, and my wife showed me that
- 8:48Speaker 3: pivot one and it cracks me every time. And we
- 8:53Speaker 3: just moved my brother in law not too long ago,
- 8:56Speaker 3: and we were lifting up something and almost I would
- 8:59Speaker 3: say a good poor of us were screaming.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yet Friends, I'm not a fan of the show either,
- 9:09Speaker 2: but they're they're The Thanksgiving episode with Brad Pitt is fantastic.
- 9:15Speaker 2: There's probably one or two others that I care for,
- 9:18Speaker 2: but uh, musically it was dominated by Usher and Outcast
- 9:22Speaker 2: with yeah and Hey, y'ah.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Oh my god, that Yeah dropping our senior year was
- 9:31Speaker 1: like the first that was It really juiced up an
- 9:36Speaker 1: entire class of high schoolers.
- 9:38Speaker 3: That's what should have been our prom song instead of
- 9:41Speaker 3: that green but.
- 9:42Speaker 1: There were That was the first song that I remember
- 9:44Speaker 1: really having phases to its popularity, where like it was
- 9:48Speaker 1: wildly popular and then everybody got tired of it, but
- 9:52Speaker 1: they still played it a lot, and then when they
- 9:55Speaker 1: stopped playing it, everybody wanted it and they started playing
- 9:59Speaker 1: it again. So like you had this phase where we
- 10:03Speaker 1: were crazy about it, then we hated it, and then
- 10:05Speaker 1: once it was gone, we were like no, no, no, bring
- 10:07Speaker 1: it back. Yeah, And for like an entire year that
- 10:10Speaker 1: was the big big dance song.
- 10:13Speaker 3: I remember, hey yeah hey yeah, right, hey yeah hey yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 3: because I well, what's even worse is and I still
- 10:21Speaker 3: do it and when I hear it and my wife
- 10:24Speaker 3: gets onto me. But it was funny back in the
- 10:25Speaker 3: day when he would be like all right, all right,
- 10:29Speaker 3: all right, I would just go I would say all
- 10:31Speaker 3: right a thousand times.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I remember then I.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Would say whatever came next, but I just thought, what
- 10:38Speaker 3: a song, And then he.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Was slowly morphed into Matthew McConaughey and days and confused.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Yeah, well that was dazed and confused, That's true.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I remember times where like he would run the bit
- 10:49Speaker 1: and people would just stop what they were doing and
- 10:51Speaker 1: just everybody would watch them to see, like how long
- 10:54Speaker 1: is he going to do it this time?
- 10:56Speaker 3: And it's and it is better when clearly it is
- 10:59Speaker 3: a song that like I shouldn't really even be attempting.
- 11:04Speaker 3: But I just loved how he does that, and I
- 11:06Speaker 3: just thought, my god, like it sounds like he's doing
- 11:09Speaker 3: it forever. I don't think he actually is. Yeah, and
- 11:12Speaker 3: I've built it in my head over the years, where
- 11:14Speaker 3: where I think I'm doing the impression and then I realized,
- 11:18Speaker 3: oh shit, I added like five hundred more, right, he
- 11:22Speaker 3: actually didn't go that nut.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Yeah, well I have found out what was the drink
- 11:29Speaker 2: of the year. It's as simple. It's a cosmopolitan. I
- 11:34Speaker 2: don't know if sex and the City was still a
- 11:36Speaker 2: thing back then, but you know that's I think. So
- 11:39Speaker 2: maybe that's why this was the drink of the year.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Drink it on friends.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I couldn't tell you. They always went to the coffee shop,
- 11:46Speaker 2: so I don't think they drank.
- 11:48Speaker 1: What about the passion of the Christ?
- 11:50Speaker 3: Hey? Yeah, did they have cosmos?
- 11:52Speaker 2: Possibly? But your traditional cosmo here that I've got is
- 11:55Speaker 2: two ounces of vodka, a half ounce of triple sex,
- 11:58Speaker 2: or I would use gram and that in this uh,
- 12:02Speaker 2: three quarters of an ounce of cranberry juice cocktail, and
- 12:05Speaker 2: a quarter ounce to half an ounce of fresh lime juice.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Uh.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And then you're gonna want an orange pill or twist
- 12:11Speaker 2: whatever you prefer. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then
- 12:14Speaker 2: add the vodka, triple sack, cranberry juice, and lime juice.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Shake the cocktail. Shake it for about thirty seconds. Or
- 12:21Speaker 2: until well chilled and then straight into a martini glass
- 12:24Speaker 2: garnish with your orange pillar twist and then there you
- 12:28Speaker 2: are your classic cocktail.
- 12:31Speaker 1: And while you were reciting the recipem cash, I looked
- 12:36Speaker 1: and its final air date was February twenty second, two
- 12:40Speaker 1: thousand and four.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Okay, that was Sex in the Cities. Yeah, so that
- 12:44Speaker 3: in Friends both ended.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Yeah what I said? Hey, I said it was a
- 12:49Speaker 1: transformative year. And I know I just didn't specify that.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I wasn't just talking about for us.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Yeah, no, for the world.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Wow. So you know, we talked about money on here.
- 13:00Speaker 2: We talked about budget, box office, all that good stuff.
- 13:03Speaker 2: It's hard for me to come up with the budget
- 13:05Speaker 2: for two thousand and four, but I'm sure it was.
- 13:07Speaker 2: It was hefty.
- 13:08Speaker 1: What was the GDP of two thousand and four.
- 13:12Speaker 2: I kind of kept my notes to strictly pop cultural stuff.
- 13:15Speaker 2: But one thing we like to do on this film,
- 13:17Speaker 2: especially the last year or so, is letterbox reviews, where
- 13:21Speaker 2: I give you some letterbox reviews from the movie. We discussed, well,
- 13:24Speaker 2: we're not discussing a movie, so I thought what would
- 13:26Speaker 2: be fun with letterbox is I give you a review
- 13:30Speaker 2: and you tell me the film from two thousand and
- 13:33Speaker 2: four that this review ghosts with out of that and this.
- 13:37Speaker 2: These are all reviews of films we did not review
- 13:41Speaker 2: in two thousand and four.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Oh okay, so we did you okatcha star?
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 13:46Speaker 3: Well, I'm bringing up two thousand and four movies because
- 13:48Speaker 3: I need some.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Do you remember what movies we've done?
- 13:53Speaker 2: No?
- 13:53Speaker 3: No, let me tell you this. When I see it,
- 13:57Speaker 3: I will know, Okay, I'll.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Put I'm going to give you the first one here.
- 14:02Speaker 2: This is from K strictly the letter K. Five stars
- 14:06Speaker 2: for this film. They just don't make feel good movies
- 14:11Speaker 2: like this anymore. There's very few movies that literally have
- 14:14Speaker 2: me smiling all the way through. This is definitely one
- 14:18Speaker 2: of those films, though.
- 14:20Speaker 1: The Passion of the Christ.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it is a comedy like Passion of the Christ. Though.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Okay, I was gonna say, do we get a genre
- 14:28Speaker 3: or this comedy?
- 14:30Speaker 2: I one of these actors was in the Obama administration.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Oh a Harold and Kumar movie.
- 14:40Speaker 2: It is Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Oh okay, I don't know if that was the first
- 14:44Speaker 3: one or not.
- 14:45Speaker 2: It was the first one. Our next film, Jerry three
- 14:50Speaker 2: and a half stars, Public opinion seems sort of divided
- 14:54Speaker 2: on this one, but at least we can all agree
- 14:58Speaker 2: that the soundtrack goes fuck looking hard.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Oh, the soundtrack goes hard.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Well, can we have a genre?
- 15:07Speaker 2: Uh, dramedy?
- 15:09Speaker 3: Okay, dramedy Okay, I am gonna go divisive, but has
- 15:15Speaker 3: but the soundtrack goes hard.
- 15:18Speaker 2: The soundtrack did win a Grammy Award for Best Film.
- 15:23Speaker 1: This has to be a iHeart huckebees.
- 15:26Speaker 2: No, it is an indie film.
- 15:30Speaker 3: You got served.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Oh, that's a good guess. That's a good guess. Garden State, Garden.
- 15:37Speaker 2: State is.
- 15:39Speaker 3: That's a good one.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Next one, Morgan three stars. This is the most I've
- 15:46Speaker 2: cared about any sport ever.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Wimbledon.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Yeah, no, okay, hang on, I take my back, but
- 15:58Speaker 3: that's one of the first things that comes up when
- 15:59Speaker 3: I put into I think.
- 16:00Speaker 1: That's like the let's see we did Friday Night Lights.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Let me see?
- 16:05Speaker 1: Oh boy, now see, I would think that dodgeball.
- 16:10Speaker 2: It is dodgeball.
- 16:11Speaker 1: There we go.
- 16:12Speaker 3: I almost was gonna say miracle.
- 16:15Speaker 1: All right, Oh yeah, that was a one. Yeah all right.
- 16:18Speaker 2: So I'm going to give you two reviews for the
- 16:21Speaker 2: same movie here. So I'll give you the two reviews
- 16:24Speaker 2: first one is from Jiz Monkey any four stars, he says,
- 16:31Speaker 2: or they say, Matt Damon knocks it out of the park.
- 16:36Speaker 2: And then the second one, for the same film Adam
- 16:39Speaker 2: Bolt with four stars as well, says, I choose to
- 16:43Speaker 2: view this as a documentary.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Oh man, that has Matt Damon. I'm not looking up
- 16:52Speaker 3: Matt Damon, but I am looking through movies because in
- 16:55Speaker 3: two thousand and four he says something about a documentary.
- 16:59Speaker 3: I feel like that might be. I can't tell if
- 17:01Speaker 3: that's a compliment or if it's like.
- 17:05Speaker 2: It is not a documentary, but it is a comedy.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Stuck on you?
- 17:12Speaker 3: Is it stuck on you?
- 17:13Speaker 2: It is not? Oh?
- 17:15Speaker 3: I was thinking, was that two thousand and four?
- 17:19Speaker 2: I will say, don't let Matt Damon throw you.
- 17:23Speaker 1: That is throwing me because I'm picking.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Oh maybe they got the person wrong. Or is Matt
- 17:29Speaker 3: Damon actually in this.
- 17:31Speaker 2: They did not get the person wrong?
- 17:33Speaker 3: Okay, so he is in this.
- 17:34Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Oh, Team America.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Team America World Police is correct?
- 17:42Speaker 3: Yeah? Oh yeah? And then with the documentary, I get
- 17:48Speaker 3: it now.
- 17:50Speaker 2: The last one I have, Josh Lewis four stars. This
- 17:55Speaker 2: is a bit of a long one, so bear with
- 17:56Speaker 2: me solid movie about an extremely normal just being a
- 18:01Speaker 2: cool dude, flying planes, dating teenagers, drinking milk, making movies,
- 18:07Speaker 2: talking about titties and lamas, having crippling disorders, exasperated by
- 18:12Speaker 2: an industry and culture that celebrates wealth and progress above
- 18:16Speaker 2: anything else.
- 18:19Speaker 3: God is that Napoleon Dynamite is not God?
- 18:25Speaker 1: Is it? Blow?
- 18:27Speaker 2: It is a biopic aviator aviator indeed?
- 18:31Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, we almost did too. We did talk
- 18:35Speaker 3: about we thought, yeah.
- 18:38Speaker 1: We pivoted and decided since we did Million Dollar Baby,
- 18:41Speaker 1: which was an Awards player, we would do The Terminal instead,
- 18:44Speaker 1: which a couple of weeks ago.
- 18:47Speaker 2: So that is our our first ever guess that.
- 18:53Speaker 1: I like that game. I don't know how much our
- 18:54Speaker 1: listeners like it, as we're sitting here like it was.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It was fun.
- 19:01Speaker 2: There, uh you know, and just as well.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Uh So I'm gonna start with the year in music
- 19:06Speaker 2: for two thousand and four. We'll go through some of
- 19:08Speaker 2: the highlights, low lights for some people. January third, Britney.
- 19:12Speaker 2: She's in the news. She marries Jason Allen Alexander, not
- 19:16Speaker 2: the Jason Alexander from Seinfeld.
- 19:18Speaker 1: I remember that being the joke back then.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Yeah, she marries Jason Alexander childhood friend in Las Vegas
- 19:26Speaker 2: and then quickly annuls the wedding fifty five hours later.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Was this when we started to think like things might
- 19:34Speaker 1: be okay.
- 19:35Speaker 2: This is the beginning of that fall, because.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Like seven was the shaved head, right.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I believe so so this was God?
- 19:42Speaker 3: So this is this is the beginning.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Yeah, man, I didn't even think about that, but it is.
- 19:47Speaker 2: You have a mystical. Mystical was sentenced to six years
- 19:51Speaker 2: in prison for sexual battery.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Yeah, good god, Yeah I remember that.
- 19:56Speaker 2: I don't remember it either, to be honest, I.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Don't really remember Mystical either, except for that one song.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Shake you ass, yeah, watch yourself?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Yeah yeah that was then what about a boy?
- 20:07Speaker 2: What he listened I think it was in Passion of
- 20:09Speaker 2: the Christ?
- 20:10Speaker 1: I don't remember.
- 20:11Speaker 3: And about a boy, I think that's what he listens to.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you might be right.
- 20:15Speaker 3: I'm almost positive because I always thought like an English one.
- 20:18Speaker 2: But yeah, I think the thing most people remember in
- 20:22Speaker 2: the Year of Music from two thousand and four is
- 20:25Speaker 2: this is the year that Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake
- 20:28Speaker 2: shocked the world at the Super Bowl. That boomed Kitty Gate.
- 20:32Speaker 1: That boom Citty gate Be coming out.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Outcast, That's when we started having old rock bands. Yeah,
- 20:40Speaker 3: where there's no way nothing could fall.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Out until jay Z got involved.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Until Apple and Jesus, let's try out these decrepit old dudes,
- 20:48Speaker 3: the Rolling Stones.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Except for Prince.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Except for Prince, that's still the best ones. Uh.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Outcast became the first rap group to win Album of
- 20:56Speaker 2: the Year at the Grammys.
- 20:59Speaker 1: That that was. It was a good, good album to
- 21:03Speaker 1: that was.
- 21:04Speaker 2: That was a speaker Box with love below.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that was. I remember that being one that people
- 21:12Speaker 1: seemed to pretty unanimously like it was a big album.
- 21:16Speaker 2: And then they just walked away, they said see you. Yeah.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Uh.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Fantasia, not the Disney animated film, but the singer wins
- 21:25Speaker 2: the third season of American Idol and becomes the first
- 21:28Speaker 2: artist to debut at number one on the Heart Hot
- 21:32Speaker 2: one with the first record. I did not know that
- 21:35Speaker 2: for her. Yeah, very good, She's done good. Yes yeah
- 21:38Speaker 2: h Britney Spears is back in the news nine uh
- 21:44Speaker 2: nine months later, on September eighteenth, she marries Kevin Fetterline
- 21:52Speaker 2: and then the last note I have for music in
- 21:54Speaker 2: the year two thousand and four, This is the year
- 21:56Speaker 2: that Ashley Simpson gets caught lip syncing on Saturday Night.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Dude, that was such a that was such a cringe moment.
- 22:05Speaker 1: We weren't saying cringe at the time, but I remember
- 22:09Speaker 1: everybody talking about that the day after and it just
- 22:13Speaker 1: being such a It was before memes were really a thing,
- 22:17Speaker 1: but it was. It was a meme. Maybe that's where
- 22:19Speaker 1: memes starts, that where.
- 22:20Speaker 3: It ended too. I don't think she does anything.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Does she not? She did a reality show yeah after that,
- 22:27Speaker 2: and I'm sure she's put out music since, but she
- 22:30Speaker 2: probably has.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Did that do her in I remember saying.
- 22:33Speaker 3: That a lot of people did or that, you know,
- 22:35Speaker 3: whatever reason it was, And the thing is, yeah, I
- 22:41Speaker 3: just did, yeah, I And what's weird is like I
- 22:44Speaker 3: don't even think that would be that big of a
- 22:45Speaker 3: deal now, No, I mean, like because it's not like
- 22:49Speaker 3: she couldn't sing. It's not like vanilla like people are shot.
- 22:52Speaker 2: But she had an illness or something like they just
- 22:55Speaker 2: popped up like the day of the show and they
- 22:57Speaker 2: had to pivot. Pivot, yeah, pivot.
- 23:01Speaker 1: So I just it's not that it like harmed her
- 23:06Speaker 1: reputation or anything, but like people just that's the thing
- 23:11Speaker 1: known for.
- 23:11Speaker 3: But could she have been the next Streisand we don't know.
- 23:18Speaker 1: It's you know, the clock's not run out yet.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Uh, I get it, she could still be. I see,
- 23:28Speaker 3: I don't think that's where that was going.
- 23:29Speaker 2: But okay, your top selling albums of two thousand and four, Uh,
- 23:34Speaker 2: only one of these I owned, but feels like Home
- 23:37Speaker 2: from Norah Jones.
- 23:39Speaker 3: I remember that one.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Back to Bedlam by James Blunt, Oh my beautiful.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Okay, that's all you have to say.
- 23:47Speaker 2: American Idiot by Green Day.
- 23:49Speaker 3: I remember that I got that one.
- 23:51Speaker 2: And then the one that I did have was Confessions
- 23:54Speaker 2: by Usher.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't have that one, but I did have
- 23:58Speaker 3: American Idiot. I remember going to see them.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Played the fuck out of that. Yeah, Like that was
- 24:03Speaker 1: one that I felt like, I don't know, Green Day
- 24:07Speaker 1: was always kind of a little underground, and then American
- 24:11Speaker 1: Idiot came out, and it.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Was just that that did feel after hit after hit.
- 24:16Speaker 1: That was the American Idiot song that that went wild.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Boulevard had Broken Dreams on that.
- 24:23Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure some September, so wake me up.
- 24:27Speaker 1: When September ends, but they didn't release it as a
- 24:30Speaker 1: single until like the following summer like they were still
- 24:33Speaker 1: pulling singles off of that album that.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Was like the graduation song, yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and then it also had that Hope
- 24:44Speaker 3: You had the Time that was not on.
- 24:47Speaker 1: That album, but I appreciate you trying. Well.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Listen, here's a fun fact. Me and our buddy Brett
- 24:53Speaker 3: went to see that show. And I'll have you know
- 24:56Speaker 3: that at that show, my future wife was there. How
- 25:00Speaker 3: about that her family and so yeah, so.
- 25:05Speaker 1: That, okay, where are the singles? Five singles came from
- 25:10Speaker 1: American Idiot.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Boulevard of Broken Dreams was maybe my favorite.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and Holiday was off of that album as well.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I'm trying to figure out what the fifth was.
- 25:20Speaker 3: I think it's that I Hope You had the Time,
- 25:23Speaker 3: can you?
- 25:24Speaker 1: It's called Oh Jesus, Jesus of Suburbia.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Jesus, Oh, I remember that, but I didn't really. Yeah,
- 25:30Speaker 3: your thing of Carrie Underwood that was released.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Jesus of Suburbia was released on November fourteenth, two thousand
- 25:37Speaker 1: and five.
- 25:38Speaker 3: My god, and didn't they make it a it's a
- 25:40Speaker 3: musical now it's a stage.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, yeah yeah, And there's supposedly a movie version
- 25:45Speaker 2: in the works.
- 25:47Speaker 3: God good for them. Good for you, Billy Joe.
- 25:50Speaker 1: That that was released on September of two thousand and
- 25:54Speaker 1: four and.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Had singles all the way up till November of two
- 25:58Speaker 3: thousand and five.
- 25:59Speaker 1: I mean, I think people sleep on that. I'm glad
- 26:01Speaker 1: you added this album into your notes mcash because I
- 26:04Speaker 1: think it was it was that was a run for them.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I don't think it ever got any higher
- 26:09Speaker 3: than that. Like that to me would be the degree.
- 26:12Speaker 3: I mean, there's a reason why they're still making money
- 26:14Speaker 3: off American Idiot some form officials.
- 26:17Speaker 2: So we'll transition into the year and TV. Unfortunately, The
- 26:23Speaker 2: Apprentice debuted on January seventh.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I thought it was older than that.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Yeah, who's in there?
- 26:28Speaker 1: That?
- 26:29Speaker 2: Nobody of importance? Sex and the City aired its final episode.
- 26:34Speaker 2: As we mentioned earlier, some milestones were hitting in TV
- 26:39Speaker 2: that year. The Price Is Right aired its six thousandth episode,
- 26:43Speaker 2: That's crimn Crazy?
- 26:46Speaker 3: Was Bob still there?
- 26:47Speaker 2: Drew Carroy, No, Bob was still around, and he's still there? Five? Yeah,
- 26:51Speaker 2: of four? Rather and then I believe so? And then
- 26:55Speaker 2: to be outdone? Was Young and the Restless aired its
- 26:58Speaker 2: eight thousandth episode.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Always coming in and stealing Bob's spotlight.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Just the classics, man, the classics, that's true. Nickelodeon turned
- 27:08Speaker 2: thirty five in two thousand and four. Wow, and then
- 27:13Speaker 2: Sesame Street turned thirty five the same year.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Five years, they were both the same age.
- 27:19Speaker 2: No, Nickelodeon's twenty five thirty five?
- 27:23Speaker 3: Sorry, okay, got it. And then we talked about Nickelodeon
- 27:27Speaker 3: ended up. I think they they. I don't think anything
- 27:29Speaker 3: changed in Nickelodeon.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Yeah, no controversy.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Being there. Yeah, yeah, the stars and stars we talked about. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:40Speaker 2: Amanda Bynes is a face makeup artist. You know. We
- 27:46Speaker 2: mentioned friends ending. Uh, it's run after ten years in
- 27:50Speaker 2: two thousand and four. But Fraser also left the air
- 27:54Speaker 2: in two thousand and four.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Oh man, I had have thought Fraser would be long
- 27:57Speaker 1: gone by two thousand.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Well, Fraser's back.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I think it's already gone again.
- 28:02Speaker 3: I think it has gone. I think that is. I
- 28:06Speaker 3: think that is that's correct.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Rugrats aired its final episode in two thousand and four.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Rug Rats I was saying, God, I love it, and
- 28:16Speaker 3: then when they tried to make them grown ups, that
- 28:18Speaker 3: was not good.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I didn't work.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Ken Jennings began his Jeopardy run in June, winning over
- 28:27Speaker 2: two and a half million dollars.
- 28:30Speaker 3: He that was in two thousand and four. Yeah, I
- 28:32Speaker 3: swear I thought that was in like the last like
- 28:34Speaker 3: ten years.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Yeah, you're thinking about the other guy. That was like
- 28:38Speaker 1: a meme for.
- 28:39Speaker 3: I mean I watch it every day. I was just shocked.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Craig Kilbourne left The Late Late Show after five years.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Damn. Rest in peace.
- 28:50Speaker 2: I don't think he's dead.
- 28:51Speaker 3: He was writing Crashers, he was, Yeah, he was.
- 28:56Speaker 2: The show lost debut on ABC. I still never understood
- 28:59Speaker 2: that show.
- 29:00Speaker 3: I never watched watched it, never watched TVs for losers.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Yeah, film dude, the rope must that's right.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Uh. It was a sad year for journalism because Tom
- 29:13Speaker 2: Brokaw and Dan Rather both retired in two thousand and four.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Man, damn, two big heavy hitters.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Dan Rather still doing stuff though I keep seeing it.
- 29:22Speaker 3: I mean on not on like the big networks.
- 29:25Speaker 1: But he's like, I got it in, I gotta get
- 29:29Speaker 1: it out. Well.
- 29:29Speaker 3: I think something happened that made him come back out
- 29:32Speaker 3: to start trying to speak some truth.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah?
- 29:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not sure what it was.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I think I feel like things have been pretty good
- 29:40Speaker 1: as far as the truth being told.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Things aren't expensive, you know. You know, as.
- 29:46Speaker 3: We transition, have you seen that latest job report.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Somebody did such a good job they got promoted to customer.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it's brilliant, that's true.
- 29:58Speaker 2: As we transition into of the year of sports from
- 30:01Speaker 2: two thousand and four, TNA Impact debuted on Fox Sports
- 30:05Speaker 2: Net in two thousand and four.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Were they still running out of the Municipal Auditorium then,
- 30:11Speaker 1: or was this when they got the Sena Fairgrounds the fairgrounds? Yeah,
- 30:15Speaker 1: well they they did the first run for a little
- 30:18Speaker 1: bit at the Municipal Auditorium and then they went over
- 30:20Speaker 1: to the Fairgrounds.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I think this is they've moved to Orlando at this point.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I could be I could I.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Have a feeling they got that studio before DV wanted
- 30:29Speaker 3: to show them.
- 30:30Speaker 1: TV didn't want to show the National Fairgrounds.
- 30:33Speaker 2: It could be wrong. I have no idea, to be honest,
- 30:36Speaker 2: I'm not the wrestling officionado. I sometimes pretend to be,
- 30:41Speaker 2: but U in the world of sports. The New England
- 30:43Speaker 2: Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl thirty
- 30:46Speaker 2: two to twenty nine.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Good super Bowl.
- 30:48Speaker 2: This was good Super Bowl. LSU wins the BCS National
- 30:52Speaker 2: Championship after beating the Oklahoma Sooners in the Sugar Bowl.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Nick Saban's title, if I'm not mistaken.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Correct Mundo And then USC though was named AP National
- 31:04Speaker 2: champion after beating Michigan in the Rose Ball.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it was really really weird. That was back when
- 31:10Speaker 1: you know, two teams were voted on to play the
- 31:13Speaker 1: National Championship. They used the BCS formula to kind of
- 31:16Speaker 1: corroborate their opinions and then they would get together and
- 31:20Speaker 1: vote at the end, and you didn't have to vote
- 31:23Speaker 1: the winner of that BCS game. So it was a
- 31:28Speaker 1: very weird setup. And USC had a really good team.
- 31:30Speaker 1: So yeah.
- 31:33Speaker 2: And then in the NFL, Jerry Rice's record of two
- 31:36Speaker 2: hundred and seventy four straight games with the catch comes
- 31:39Speaker 2: to an end when the Raiders beat the Buffalo Bills
- 31:41Speaker 2: thirteen to ten. About that oo fun, little fun little
- 31:45Speaker 2: fact there for it that is.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:47Speaker 2: I don't think we've ever talked about the College World
- 31:50Speaker 2: Series on any of these episodes, but Cal State Folton
- 31:54Speaker 2: beat Texas.
- 31:56Speaker 1: I couldn't even tell you what their mascot is.
- 32:00Speaker 2: They I have no idea.
- 32:02Speaker 3: I was hoping there would just be total silence as
- 32:04Speaker 3: he said that.
- 32:07Speaker 1: We just move on.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Well, speaking of moving on, the Montreal Expos did just
- 32:11Speaker 2: that as they moved to Washington, d C. For the
- 32:13Speaker 2: two thousand and five season.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Are those the Nationals?
- 32:17Speaker 2: Those are the Nationals.
- 32:19Speaker 1: You're not going to believe this. Cal State Fullerton Are
- 32:23Speaker 1: the Titans?
- 32:24Speaker 2: Oh they are? Yeah?
- 32:26Speaker 1: How about that?
- 32:27Speaker 2: What?
- 32:27Speaker 3: Oh man? Yep, what a reveal.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Just this was a huge year for baseball. This is
- 32:36Speaker 2: the year that the Boston Red Sox come back from
- 32:40Speaker 2: three defeat the the New York Yankees and the A
- 32:44Speaker 2: L d or a LCS and then went on to
- 32:47Speaker 2: sweep the Saint Louis Cardinals to win the World Series
- 32:51Speaker 2: that year.
- 32:51Speaker 1: How about that?
- 32:52Speaker 3: That's when the curse was broken first, and the curse
- 32:55Speaker 3: they Matt Damon and Ben Affleck got married to each other.
- 32:59Speaker 1: I remember that on the field.
- 33:01Speaker 3: And then, funny enough, Johnny Damon is the one who
- 33:04Speaker 3: married them.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. Do you remember what film was filmed
- 33:09Speaker 2: during the World Series that year?
- 33:11Speaker 3: Fever Pitch?
- 33:12Speaker 2: There you go, you know, Fever Pitch is a remake
- 33:15Speaker 2: of a foreign film. No, yeah, yeah, it's not a
- 33:21Speaker 2: baseball film. It's a football film or a soccer film.
- 33:25Speaker 2: And they changed it to Baseball when they remade it.
- 33:29Speaker 1: How about that?
- 33:29Speaker 2: Wow?
- 33:30Speaker 3: And and and Jimmy Fallon's film career has just it's
- 33:34Speaker 3: been unstoppable since ever.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Since Taxi came out. Man, he's been on top.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Of things, not about Taxi.
- 33:42Speaker 2: I think he's forgotten about tax I know Queen Latifa
- 33:44Speaker 2: has forgotten about tax Yeah. Yeah, sadly I owned that
- 33:48Speaker 2: DVD at one point. Yes, the Detroit Pistons beat the
- 33:52Speaker 2: Lakers four to one to win the NBA championship that year.
- 33:56Speaker 2: And what I didn't remember, but it does make sense.
- 33:59Speaker 2: The Yukon Huskies won both the men's and women's national
- 34:04Speaker 2: championships in basketball that year.
- 34:05Speaker 3: I think they've won every year.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure. I just did a campus tour of
- 34:10Speaker 1: Yukon and I'm pretty sure they bring it up. They're
- 34:12Speaker 1: the only program in the nation that has had the
- 34:16Speaker 1: men's team and the women's team win the national championship
- 34:21Speaker 1: in the same season multiple times. Wow, that's not the
- 34:25Speaker 1: only time that's happened.
- 34:27Speaker 2: I believe it.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Well, I guess their shit doesn't stink up there, it doesn't.
- 34:30Speaker 1: It don't it don't. It's a beautiful campus.
- 34:32Speaker 2: I bet. And then in this in the NHL. The
- 34:36Speaker 2: Tampa Bay Uh, oh my god, you got their lightning
- 34:40Speaker 2: lightly thank you beat the Calgary Flames four to three
- 34:43Speaker 2: to win the Stanley Cup final seven games. Yep, it's
- 34:47Speaker 2: a good series. Uh. The Summer Olympics was held in Athens,
- 34:51Speaker 2: Greece that year in two thousand and four, and the
- 34:53Speaker 2: US wins the most gold medals in total overall medals
- 34:57Speaker 2: in those games as well. Champions and the World of
- 35:03Speaker 2: Professional Wrestling and the main event a WrestleMania twenty Chris
- 35:07Speaker 2: Benoit defeated Triple H and HBK.
- 35:11Speaker 1: That was a good WrestleMania and for for how things ended,
- 35:18Speaker 1: marring that marring that main event, for what it was,
- 35:24Speaker 1: it was a really good triple threat main event for WrestleMania.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle. Yeah, ww title on that
- 35:30Speaker 1: show was fantastic. That was the infamous Goldberg brock Lesnar match. Yeah.
- 35:36Speaker 1: You had Evolution taking on the Rock and Sock Connection.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Isn't it crazy? And the and and listen, listen everyone,
- 35:42Speaker 3: you're I don't think anyone's gonna believe this, but this
- 35:44Speaker 3: was all just held in one night, Yes, one whole night.
- 35:49Speaker 1: That was when you had Chris Jericho and Christian and
- 35:52Speaker 1: Tris Stratus turned John Cena and The Big Show. This
- 35:56Speaker 1: is when the Undertaker came back as the dead Man
- 36:00Speaker 1: in the American Bad That's really big, really big show.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Madison Square guard have seen his first title, wouldn't it?
- 36:05Speaker 1: It was?
- 36:06Speaker 3: Yeah, who won the British Opening Golf?
- 36:11Speaker 2: I didn't come up with any golf or cricket anything
- 36:14Speaker 2: like that. Yeah. So let's transition into the year in movies.
- 36:20Speaker 2: It was a movie. Do we want to start with
- 36:23Speaker 2: an Oscar recap or talk razzies? First we got with
- 36:29Speaker 2: the worst Okay, I'm going to give you the worst actress.
- 36:32Speaker 2: I'll give you the big the big awards here. Worst
- 36:34Speaker 2: actress was Britney Spears and Fahrenheit nine to eleven.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Excuse me.
- 36:45Speaker 2: That I've only seen it.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Your worst supporting actor. I'm sorry she was worst supporting
- 36:53Speaker 2: actress for Fahrenheit nine to eleven. Worst supporting actor was
- 36:59Speaker 2: Donald Rumsfield and Fahrenheit nine to eleven.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Thank you. That makes more sense. At least I remember
- 37:04Speaker 3: him being a part of it.
- 37:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Your worst actor George W. Bush for Fahrenheit nine
- 37:09Speaker 2: to eleven.
- 37:10Speaker 3: I see, I see a trend here, I see.
- 37:12Speaker 2: What your worst actress. No, it was not Condoleeza Rice.
- 37:17Speaker 2: It was Ally Berry Catwoman. Yep, damn. Your Worst Picture
- 37:23Speaker 2: nominees are Alexander Oh, that was Ship Yeah, super Babies, Baby,
- 37:32Speaker 2: superb too, Baby Geniuses. I think that's a movie. Cat
- 37:37Speaker 2: Woman Surviving Christmas and White Chicks.
- 37:42Speaker 3: Surviving Christmas is with those others. I mean, it's not
- 37:46Speaker 3: a great movie.
- 37:47Speaker 2: But come on, what is What is the winner for
- 37:50Speaker 2: the Razzie that year and best Worst Picture.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna say White Chicks.
- 37:55Speaker 3: I'm gonna say, Alexander, You're both wrong. It was Catwoman,
- 38:00Speaker 3: almost said cat Woman. Since Halle Berry beat out everyone
- 38:02Speaker 3: in Fahrenheit nine to eleven.
- 38:05Speaker 2: She broke the streak. God yeah, yeah, she's the brock
- 38:10Speaker 2: Lesnar of Razzie actresses. She broke the streak. But when
- 38:16Speaker 2: it comes to like good cinema, your Oscar recap for
- 38:21Speaker 2: that year is Best Picture winner Million Dollar Baby. We
- 38:23Speaker 2: all know that. We reviewed that film here, Best Actor
- 38:27Speaker 2: Jamie Fox Foray again, we reviewed that film as well,
- 38:30Speaker 2: and then we go back to a Million Dollar Baby
- 38:32Speaker 2: with Best Actress Hilary Swank, Best Director Clint Eastwood and
- 38:36Speaker 2: Best Supporting Actor Morgan Freeman. But your best supporting Actress,
- 38:41Speaker 2: Kat Blanchett proved to be the halle Berry of the
- 38:45Speaker 2: Oscars that year by winning for Aviator, beating out whoever
- 38:49Speaker 2: the best Supporting Actress would have been for a million
- 38:51Speaker 2: Dollar Baby.
- 38:52Speaker 1: The Aviator the one episode that we look back on
- 38:58Speaker 1: and think, if we had one more, that's what we
- 39:00Speaker 1: would have done.
- 39:01Speaker 3: The Aviator.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe I'd have to see what the other films were.
- 39:05Speaker 1: I feel like that was the one that kept coming
- 39:08Speaker 1: up in discussions, but I never I never saw maybe
- 39:10Speaker 1: the Notebook. Maybe the Notebook.
- 39:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Notebook was a baker Man would have been another
- 39:15Speaker 2: comedy we could have done.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Aviator was one. I mean, I guess
- 39:19Speaker 3: considering the the cast and Scorsese and DiCaprio makes sense.
- 39:25Speaker 3: But we've got time, Yeah, not for but for other
- 39:30Speaker 3: Scorsese DiCaprio.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Then your best animated film at the Oscars was
- 39:36Speaker 2: The Incredibles.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Which we did do an episode which that one we
- 39:39Speaker 1: did do.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Yeah, And then as we as we mostly along, we'll
- 39:44Speaker 2: get to the films that we didn't just discuss the
- 39:49Speaker 2: review that we can get into. But I want to
- 39:50Speaker 2: talk about some of the bursts and deaths of two
- 39:53Speaker 2: thousand and four. Some of your notable celebrities that were
- 39:57Speaker 2: born in two thousand and four that are now turning
- 40:00Speaker 2: twenty one or we'll turn twenty one soon is Millie
- 40:05Speaker 2: Bobby Brown from Stranger Things.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Yeah. Jenna Davis, who played the physical version of Megan
- 40:15Speaker 2: in the horror film Megan, not the two point zero
- 40:18Speaker 2: versions because she wasn't invited back, but in the first one,
- 40:21Speaker 2: the one with the crazy dance moves and shit nice,
- 40:26Speaker 2: the probably the most popular pop singer around today, Jesse
- 40:31Speaker 2: Murph was born in two thousand and four. I'm sure
- 40:34Speaker 2: both of you don't know who that is, but you know,
- 40:36Speaker 2: you know, that's why I'm here. She's a hot ticket
- 40:40Speaker 2: right now. And then Noah Snap or Schnop from Stranger
- 40:44Speaker 2: Things also was born in two thousand and four. And
- 40:47Speaker 2: then in the world of sports, Bronnie James was born
- 40:51Speaker 2: in two thousand and four.
- 40:53Speaker 1: That's crazy, that's crazy, because two thousand and four was
- 40:56Speaker 1: when like lebron fever was just getting going.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and then you have our celebrities who turned twenty
- 41:05Speaker 2: one in two thousand and four, meaning they were born
- 41:08Speaker 2: in eighty three, and that list includes Chris Hensworth, Andrew Garfield,
- 41:15Speaker 2: Amy Winehouse Rip, Henry Cavell aka Jesus Cavill. Cavill is
- 41:22Speaker 2: that how it was pronounced? Okay, Cavil, I got it
- 41:27Speaker 2: right the first time. Carrie Underwood, Donald Glover aka Childish
- 41:32Speaker 2: Gambino both twenty one. Milia Kunis from that seventies.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Show Ashton Kutcher's wife.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Yes ww Hall of Famers The Bellas, turned twenty one.
- 41:47Speaker 2: One of my favorite actresses, Emily Blunt, turned twenty one
- 41:50Speaker 2: that year. I love her back in the world of music.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Miranda Lambert and Maclamore both turned twenty one in two thousand.
- 41:58Speaker 3: And I have a quick question, Yes, why is Henry
- 42:04Speaker 3: Cavill Jesus?
- 42:06Speaker 1: Was he not?
- 42:06Speaker 2: Who played? Oh? That was Jim Covisel mich I honestly,
- 42:10Speaker 2: God thought you're talking about him playing Superman.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I was, I was gonna keep going. I caught that
- 42:16Speaker 1: and started to say something, but we kept going, and
- 42:18Speaker 1: I was like, I'm not going to derail this.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Let's you brought that up because Jim Covizil.
- 42:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, was Jim Covizel twenty one in two thousand
- 42:26Speaker 3: and four.
- 42:26Speaker 2: I mean he's Jesus, so he could have been in
- 42:28Speaker 2: the age he wanted to be.
- 42:29Speaker 3: No, that's true. Good point, he was two.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Thousand and four, four years old.
- 42:34Speaker 3: It's true. Two thousand and four A d I forget.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Yeah. And then lastly, Adam Driver and Jonah Hill both
- 42:42Speaker 2: turned twenty one at two thousand and four.
- 42:45Speaker 1: I did not realize Adam Driver was that old.
- 42:48Speaker 2: I don't know if I did either.
- 42:50Speaker 1: I don't know. I wouldn't have thought he's twenty one.
- 42:53Speaker 3: Now, that's right, that is right.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Uh. Sadly, we lost some big names in the year
- 42:59Speaker 2: two thousand four, and it starts with a lot of
- 43:03Speaker 2: people's favorite president, not mine, but the original governor, Ronald
- 43:08Speaker 2: Reagan died in two thousand and four. We lost another
- 43:14Speaker 2: Superman in two thousand and four, Christopher Reeves passed away.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Marlon Brando memories, Yeah, Marlon Brando died in two thousand
- 43:26Speaker 2: and four, and then we talked about the movie Ray
- 43:30Speaker 2: and Ray Charles was lost in two thousand and four.
- 43:33Speaker 3: But wait a minute, where do you go?
- 43:36Speaker 1: God?
- 43:37Speaker 2: He on the road is what he did?
- 43:40Speaker 1: He?
- 43:42Speaker 3: God, his Pepsi commercials were something, weren't they?
- 43:46Speaker 2: His? Uh? His uh, what was it the national anthem
- 43:52Speaker 2: or whatever it is he saying in WrestleMania that year. Yeah. Yeah,
- 43:56Speaker 2: we also lost the funk Master himself, Rick James in
- 43:59Speaker 2: two thousand four. Juliet Child was lost in two thousand
- 44:03Speaker 2: and four, as was Psycho and Jamie Lee Curtis's mom
- 44:08Speaker 2: Janet Lee.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Damn.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a lot of that's a lot of a
- 44:13Speaker 3: lot of big famous people.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Yeah, here's a name that doesn't course.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Actually, famous people don't die. I'm shocked to hear though,
- 44:19Speaker 3: they don't.
- 44:19Speaker 2: They usually last forever. But a name we lost that
- 44:22Speaker 2: doesn't quite match the magnitude of some of these names,
- 44:25Speaker 2: maybe to some people listening. Old Dirty Bastard was lost
- 44:30Speaker 2: in that Yeah.
- 44:33Speaker 3: Did you think he was still alive?
- 44:34Speaker 1: Well, no, I just forgot about him. Yeah.
- 44:37Speaker 3: In general, I mean when I think of two thousand
- 44:39Speaker 3: and four, I think of Old Dirty Bastard and Julia Child,
- 44:42Speaker 3: two people instantly.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Come to mind.
- 44:44Speaker 2: We lost another comedy legend in Rodney Dangerfield in two
- 44:48Speaker 2: thousand and four.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Two thousand and four sucks.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Yeah, well, this one's really gonna get some of you
- 44:53Speaker 2: in the field. In the fields, the Big boss Man
- 44:58Speaker 2: went to the State PENITENTI in heaven.
- 45:02Speaker 3: My God.
- 45:04Speaker 1: That's uh, you shouldn't save that one for the last.
- 45:08Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm gonna need a few.
- 45:10Speaker 2: I'm going to hitch in the gut again because we
- 45:12Speaker 2: lost Pat Tillman and Reggie White from the NFL in
- 45:16Speaker 2: two thousand and four, geezus. And then there's a couple others.
- 45:22Speaker 2: I'll skip them because it doesn't have the same feels
- 45:25Speaker 2: as his last one will. But in two thousand and four,
- 45:27Speaker 2: the first one of the first parts of my childhood
- 45:30Speaker 2: passed away, and that was Captain Kangaroo.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Not Captain King, not him too.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Yeah, no, say it ain't so.
- 45:41Speaker 1: I like that.
- 45:42Speaker 3: We've also skipped over these two other dead people you
- 45:46Speaker 3: don't want.
- 45:46Speaker 2: To real quick. We lost Tony Randall, Fay Ray, and
- 45:51Speaker 2: Jack Parr in two thousand and four.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Okay, I think we could have mentioned them before Captain Kangaroo. God,
- 45:59Speaker 3: that was your personal preference.
- 46:03Speaker 2: That's all I have to cover two thousand and four,
- 46:06Speaker 2: But I think it would be missed if we did
- 46:08Speaker 2: not talk about and discuss some of the films from
- 46:11Speaker 2: that year that we did not talk or review this season.
- 46:14Speaker 2: So anybody want to start with someone that you.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Guys do you guys want to actually talk about the
- 46:20Speaker 1: passion of the Christ since we brought it up all
- 46:22Speaker 1: year long.
- 46:23Speaker 3: I'm seeing you when I saw well, I did. I've
- 46:27Speaker 3: seen it. I watch it every year and some people
- 46:31Speaker 3: might think, you know what, that's what people think, but no,
- 46:34Speaker 3: it's Christmas, Christmas, and yeah it's just birthday.
- 46:37Speaker 2: And birthday in June. But okay.
- 46:41Speaker 3: But I remember going to watch it and thought how
- 46:45Speaker 3: weird it was that people were coming in with popcorn
- 46:49Speaker 3: and coats, and I thought, I just don't think this
- 46:53Speaker 3: is one where you're just gonna be kind of like
- 46:57Speaker 3: sad and then you're laughing and then you come back
- 47:00Speaker 3: a like. I just thought it was so weird to
- 47:03Speaker 3: see that. But I remember it being real. In case
- 47:10Speaker 3: you guys don't know about what it's about, it's about
- 47:12Speaker 3: Jesus and how he gets up on the cross and
- 47:17Speaker 3: is making a sequel by the way, and but it
- 47:21Speaker 3: was just so intense like it is. I mean, listen,
- 47:24Speaker 3: it's great filmmaking for those that want to maybe try
- 47:28Speaker 3: to experience what it was like it was. I mean,
- 47:31Speaker 3: it's there and it was the highest grossing RATEDAR movie
- 47:35Speaker 3: I think until Deadpool or Joker. One of them. I
- 47:39Speaker 3: mean that's a long time so I mean as far
- 47:43Speaker 3: as like great filmmaking, Jim Jim cavisl Mel Gibson, that's
- 47:48Speaker 3: another guy that everyone still adores through all these years.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and.
- 47:54Speaker 3: I but that's my main memory is people coming in
- 47:57Speaker 3: with popcorn and drinks and candy, and I just thought,
- 48:00Speaker 3: this is really yeah, this is strange. This is strange.
- 48:05Speaker 3: Just so just so you know, Stony's wife would be
- 48:07Speaker 3: one of those people.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Stories of people like like having like heart attacks or
- 48:14Speaker 2: medical emergencies while watching the film because how intense it
- 48:18Speaker 2: was for them.
- 48:18Speaker 3: And I think that was Blair Witch project. You're thinking
- 48:20Speaker 3: of something else. I don't know.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I don't remember. Think I remember there being some discussion
- 48:26Speaker 1: of like, hey, pay attention, this is rated R and
- 48:31Speaker 1: and there was a little bit of backlash like well
- 48:33Speaker 1: I didn't know it was going to go that hard.
- 48:35Speaker 1: I haven't seen it. I just I remember what mcash.
- 48:37Speaker 3: Is talking about.
- 48:38Speaker 1: There were people. There were people that were critical because
- 48:42Speaker 1: they like weren't really expecting it. Yeah, people that kind
- 48:47Speaker 1: of went to the theater thinking this is a Christian film,
- 48:50Speaker 1: this is for family.
- 48:51Speaker 3: Well, I mean and people, but you know what I
- 48:53Speaker 3: mean I remember, like churches, people would like rent out
- 48:56Speaker 3: the theaters and everything like it was a bit you know,
- 48:58Speaker 3: and I think, I mean, I'm sure sure kids saw
- 49:00Speaker 3: it because you know, in church it's like, hey, look, listen,
- 49:04Speaker 3: this is what happened. I mean, listen. If I was
- 49:06Speaker 3: a young kid watching that, I'd be traumatized. Probably.
- 49:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:12Speaker 3: But but it's rough. I mean that I would say,
- 49:15Speaker 3: at least it's only two hours, believe it or not.
- 49:17Speaker 3: Maybe a little past two hours. But there's a good
- 49:20Speaker 3: portion of just some just beatings, like and that was
- 49:25Speaker 3: that's tough to that's tough to watch. And then and
- 49:30Speaker 3: our family bought the DVD. And then as I got older,
- 49:33Speaker 3: I thought, why would we? Why would we?
- 49:36Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 49:37Speaker 3: Yeah, like you know, people are like, what's that you
- 49:40Speaker 3: don't know? Well, come here, I'll tell you the story. Actually,
- 49:43Speaker 3: i'll have Mel Gibson tell it to you. I don't
- 49:47Speaker 3: really view it the same way as I used to,
- 49:49Speaker 3: but I will say it is I think it is
- 49:54Speaker 3: great filmmaking. Obviously, it kind of depends on what whatever
- 50:01Speaker 3: believes you bring into it. But I just thought, huh
- 50:04Speaker 3: so people went to the concessions. Cool.
- 50:08Speaker 1: I will say some of my other favorite movies from
- 50:11Speaker 1: the year that we didn't talk.
- 50:12Speaker 3: Was Passion one of them.
- 50:14Speaker 1: No, okay, sorry, Sideways is one of Sideways. Sideways says
- 50:19Speaker 1: maybe one of my five favorite films in general.
- 50:22Speaker 3: Paul Giamatti is in Alexander Paine's two Best Films.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and I was a big fan of Envy. We
- 50:29Speaker 1: didn't talk about.
- 50:31Speaker 3: Not a great movie. Not a great movie. But I
- 50:34Speaker 3: love Christopher Walking in that.
- 50:36Speaker 1: I liked The Machinists. Yeah. Two thousand and four was
- 50:40Speaker 1: when Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Suzoo came out,
- 50:44Speaker 1: and I didn't I didn't like it at the time,
- 50:46Speaker 1: but I have since grown to love it. Uh. You
- 50:50Speaker 1: mentioned The Notebook. Yeah, that was another one that I
- 50:54Speaker 1: still think plays well. I would have liked to have
- 50:56Speaker 1: revisited films like Troy and Seek Window because I liked
- 51:01Speaker 1: them at the time, but I have a feeling they're
- 51:04Speaker 1: not not very great today. Wicker Park in that category
- 51:08Speaker 1: as well.
- 51:09Speaker 3: I remember not liking that one.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Really.
- 51:11Speaker 3: Yeah, Secret Window is not bad. It's more funny though
- 51:17Speaker 3: than like that creepy thriller. And like, you can't really
- 51:20Speaker 3: take Johnny Depp like you used to.
- 51:22Speaker 1: That was the year of the Clive Owen Kira Knightley
- 51:25Speaker 1: King Arthur movie.
- 51:27Speaker 3: I would I would like to watch that. I loved it,
- 51:30Speaker 3: and that's Antoine Fuqua who did Train to Day that
- 51:33Speaker 3: King Arthur.
- 51:34Speaker 1: We didn't talk about the Village.
- 51:35Speaker 3: The Village is one I think I kind of tried
- 51:38Speaker 3: to push for, but I would. I would like to
- 51:41Speaker 3: rewatch that too, because that was kind of the last
- 51:43Speaker 3: great m Night movie until maybe Split.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Fair enough, fair enough, and I like.
- 51:50Speaker 3: I did like lading in the Water. Speaking of Paul
- 51:52Speaker 3: Giamatti about Man on.
- 51:54Speaker 1: Fire, Man on Fire, I remember.
- 51:56Speaker 3: Rarely digging that one with him and Tony Scott were
- 51:59Speaker 3: we're doing and their thing one of the sorry go ahead.
- 52:03Speaker 1: No, that's about uh, that's about all I've got.
- 52:06Speaker 3: I looked at somewhere I see like one of probably
- 52:10Speaker 3: the movies I don't like that Tom Hanks is in
- 52:13Speaker 3: is The Lady Killers. Oh yeah, and that's also a
- 52:15Speaker 3: Cohen brother movie, which is shocking. Also shout out to
- 52:20Speaker 3: Welcome to Mooseport because that was Gene Hackman's last film.
- 52:23Speaker 3: He retired after that. I don't blame him, but yeah,
- 52:27Speaker 3: he mentioned Sony mentioned Troy I I I kind of
- 52:30Speaker 3: would like to go back. That was always when when
- 52:32Speaker 3: people wanted to just kind of tease me and make
- 52:34Speaker 3: me cry, they would say Troy was better than Sock.
- 52:41Speaker 3: I miss those days. There's something else. Well, we talked
- 52:45Speaker 3: about Anchorman, which I do think is probably still one
- 52:47Speaker 3: of the absolute best comedies fifty first States.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Oh that was two thousand and four.
- 52:54Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I like that one. That's when Adam
- 52:57Speaker 3: Sandlers still did good movies. I know it's been a while. Yeah,
- 53:04Speaker 3: those are kind of the ones. I will say. My
- 53:06Speaker 3: son's favorite movie would be Mickey's Twice upon a Christmas.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Uh.
- 53:10Speaker 3: We watched that all all year classic. So there's that,
- 53:16Speaker 3: m caash. What do you got?
- 53:17Speaker 2: I got? Uh? I think I don't think many of these.
- 53:20Speaker 2: I got a couple of comedies. First of all, Saved
- 53:23Speaker 2: the uh Mandy Moore Macaulay Culkin film.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Uh never saw that.
- 53:28Speaker 2: It's about She plays this ultra religious girl who's dating
- 53:32Speaker 2: this guy named Dean, and then Dean turns out to
- 53:35Speaker 2: be gay. He comes out of the closet, and she
- 53:38Speaker 2: does everything she can to like turn him back, you know, uh,
- 53:43Speaker 2: even giving up her virginity because she's a virgent, because she's,
- 53:46Speaker 2: you know, saving herself and then uh, and then Dean
- 53:49Speaker 2: and gets sent to a uh what do they call
- 53:51Speaker 2: it street camp or whatever? Okay, sounds kind of bleak,
- 53:55Speaker 2: but it's actually a fun of fun little comedy.
- 53:59Speaker 3: It's a satire of how what religion can Yeah.
- 54:05Speaker 2: The White Chicks, obviously I would have been It would
- 54:08Speaker 2: have been fun to talk about that movie.
- 54:10Speaker 1: I would have been game for an episode on White Chicks.
- 54:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Harold and Kumar, I just I don't like the
- 54:15Speaker 2: whole trilogy, but I love that first one so much
- 54:18Speaker 2: because Neil Patrick Harris just steals the movie to me,
- 54:22Speaker 2: being back being the exact opposite of what he is
- 54:25Speaker 2: in real life. Uh, Dodgeball, we've kind of mentioned, would
- 54:29Speaker 2: have been fun to attack.
- 54:31Speaker 1: That was another contender. Yeah, I liked.
- 54:35Speaker 3: Closer, Yeah, Clive Owen, Uh, Natalie Portman and actually I
- 54:41Speaker 3: want to think Jude Law and Natalie Portman got nominated.
- 54:45Speaker 3: It seems like it was they were both supporting ones.
- 54:47Speaker 3: But I think that either was one of or the
- 54:50Speaker 3: last film directed by Mike nicholskt that.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Yeah, we could have talked about Jackass two, damn it.
- 54:59Speaker 2: But the I got three others. Garden State. Obviously, I
- 55:03Speaker 2: just love Zach Braff and everything he does. But I
- 55:06Speaker 2: think Butterfly Effect would have been a fun little movie
- 55:09Speaker 2: to rewatch because I haven't seen it in forever.
- 55:12Speaker 1: I remember thinking at the time that it was kind
- 55:14Speaker 1: of a cool movie, and it's It's in that category
- 55:17Speaker 1: of I'd love to rewatch to see if I actually
- 55:20Speaker 1: like this or not.
- 55:20Speaker 3: Ye, same thing I remember not I remember not liking it.
- 55:25Speaker 3: Then was it Amy Smart is in it too?
- 55:26Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 55:27Speaker 2: Smart? Yeah? And then lastly the one I have just
- 55:30Speaker 2: I would I didn't like the film version of this,
- 55:32Speaker 2: but I think I would want to watch it rewatch
- 55:34Speaker 2: it just to make Stony watch it. And that's Phantom
- 55:37Speaker 2: of the Opera.
- 55:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I would like to watch that.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:41Speaker 3: I remember we had gone to see, Uh, there's a
- 55:45Speaker 3: Dennis Quaid Tyrese movie called Flight of the Phoenix. My
- 55:49Speaker 3: mom and I went to see that and we literally
- 55:51Speaker 3: were walking out of opera mills and someone handed us
- 55:54Speaker 3: a ticket for a sneak preview and we sat right
- 55:56Speaker 3: smack in the middle and was watched Phanom of the Opera.
- 55:58Speaker 1: How about that? That's cool?
- 56:00Speaker 3: Also, National Treasure, that was a fun little movie.
- 56:03Speaker 1: That's what this is I thought that was like O
- 56:06Speaker 1: two for some reason. No, okay, well there we go.
- 56:11Speaker 2: What a year it was?
- 56:13Speaker 1: What a year?
- 56:14Speaker 3: It was the liberteam that wouldn't tilto.
- 56:17Speaker 1: That's the thing you remember from the liberteam? It is
- 56:20Speaker 1: I was about to say the same thing the wooden Bildo.
- 56:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we've waxed poetically about the year two
- 56:27Speaker 2: thousand and four. Enough, we're closing in on an hour. Yes, yeah,
