- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is a Monday, it is the
- 0:1625th of September. And Gee, I'm delighted that you
- 0:20have chosen to invite me in to the beginning of your week where
- 0:24you and I are going to set the scene for the week ahead by
- 0:29starting off our weeks reading God's Word.
- 0:31We are in the thick of the story of the Acts of the Apostles as
- 0:36we see God's Spirit moving in the midst of their community,
- 0:41shaking things up, empowering their leaders to go and say some
- 0:45things that are making the leaders of the day very unhappy.
- 0:49It is all happening and today we will meet a man named Steven and
- 0:55we will see that play out this week, which is not great for him
- 0:58but an incredible, an incredible witness to us and everyone
- 1:02through time who reads the story.
- 1:05There is so much to read. Why don't you join me as we
- 1:09begin this week by reading together Acts Chapter 6.
- 1:24But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings
- 1:28of discontent. The Greek speaking believers
- 1:32complained about their Hebrew speaking believers, saying that
- 1:35their widows were being discriminated against in the
- 1:37daily distribution of food. So the 12 called a meeting of
- 1:42all the believers. They said we apostles should
- 1:47spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food
- 1:51program. And so brothers select seven men
- 1:55who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom.
- 1:59We will give them this responsibility.
- 2:02Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the
- 2:06Word. Everyone liked this idea, and
- 2:09they chose the following Stephen, a man full of faith and
- 2:13the Holy Spirit, Philip Proctoris, Nykinor, Tymon,
- 2:19Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, an earlier convert to
- 2:23the Jewish faith. These seven were presented to
- 2:26the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on
- 2:29them. So God's message continued to
- 2:32spread. The number of believers greatly
- 2:35increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were
- 2:38converted to Stephen. A man full of God's grace and
- 2:43power performed amazing miracles and signs among the people.
- 2:49But one day some men from the synagogue of Freed Slaves, as it
- 2:52was called, started to debate with him.
- 2:55They were Jews from Sirene, Alexandria, Silicia, and the
- 3:00province of Asia. None of them could stand against
- 3:03the wisdom and the spirit with which Stephen spoke.
- 3:07So they persuaded some men to lie about Stephen, saying we
- 3:11heard him blaspheme Moses and even God.
- 3:14This roused the people, the elders and the teachers of
- 3:17religious law. So they arrested Steven and
- 3:21brought him before the High Council.
- 3:23The lying witnesses said this man is always speaking against
- 3:28the Holy Temple and against the Law of Moses.
- 3:31We have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy
- 3:35the temple and change the customs Moses handed down to us.
- 3:40At this point, everyone in the High Council stared at Steven
- 3:45because his face became as bright as an angel's.
- 3:59You are a faithful God. Thank you that you walked beside
- 4:03us each day, through each challenge, along each high
- 4:08point, through each dark valley. Thank you that we are never
- 4:13alone, Jesus. I pray that as we walk our lives
- 4:18today, that we would never be in doubt of your presence.
- 4:23Remind us that you are right there with us, empowering us
- 4:26with your Spirit, constantly forgiven, constantly loved, and
- 4:32constantly claimed as your precious children.
- 4:37We are so grateful and we love you, and it's in your name that
- 4:41we pray Jesus. Amen.
