- 7:54Speaker 1: The event was the first in a series of similar
- 7:57Speaker 1: events to be held at college campuses nationwide. Mister Kirk
- 8:01Speaker 1: is a well known conservative activist, famous for these types
- 8:04Speaker 1: of events, where he discusses various political issues and debates
- 8:08Speaker 1: with audience members. His events and comments have garnered a
- 8:12Speaker 1: significant number of supporters and drawn the ire of many
- 8:15Speaker 1: who disagree with his political views. The event at UVU
- 8:21Speaker 1: was announced foreign advance and garnered significant publicity and interest. Consequently,
- 8:26Speaker 1: several hundred people attended. Mister Kirk was interacting with the
- 8:30Speaker 1: crowd before the event officially got under way. Then, approximately
- 8:34Speaker 1: at noon, mister Kirk seated himself under a portable canopy
- 8:38Speaker 1: behind the table and a microphone. He began speaking to
- 8:42Speaker 1: the crowd and fielding questions from attendees, a format mister
- 8:46Speaker 1: Kirk commonly used at his events. Mister Kirk allowed his
- 8:50Speaker 1: questioners to approach a microphone positioned directly in front of him.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Mister Kirk's team members were very close to him on
- 8:58Speaker 1: his right and left, as well behind his canopy, and
- 9:01Speaker 1: others at various close locations near him. The large crowd
- 9:05Speaker 1: surrounded mister Kirk on three sides. Temporary metal fencing separated
- 9:10Speaker 1: attendees from mister Kirk by only a matter of feet.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Directly above and behind mister Kirk was the UVU Haull
- 9:17Speaker 1: of Flags, an indoor walkway spanning several hundred feet with
- 9:21Speaker 1: Florida ceiling glass windows which overlook the plaza where mister
- 9:25Speaker 1: Kirk was seated. People were in the walkway at the
- 9:28Speaker 1: time of the shooting. Approximately fifteen minutes into the event,
- 9:33Speaker 1: mister Kirk was answering a question about mass shootings by
- 9:36Speaker 1: transgender individuals when a gunshot rang out. The bullet struck
- 9:41Speaker 1: mister Kirk in the neck. He slumped to the ground
- 9:44Speaker 1: almost immediately. The bullet's trajectory passed closely to several other
- 9:48Speaker 1: individuals besides mister Kirk, including the questioner who was standing
- 9:53Speaker 1: directly in front of mister Kirk. Children were visible near
- 9:56Speaker 1: mister kirk stage when he was shot. Mister Kirk was
- 10:00Speaker 1: rushed into a nearby hospital, where he was declared deceased.
- 10:04Speaker 1: The medical examiner's report is pending. The UVU surveillance investigation.
- 10:11Speaker 1: At the moment of the shot a UVU police officer.
- 10:14Speaker 1: The UVU officer was watching the crowd from an elevated
- 10:17Speaker 1: vantage point. As soon as he heard the shot, he
- 10:20Speaker 1: began to scan the area for threats. Believing the shot
- 10:23Speaker 1: came from a rifle because of its sound, he looked
- 10:26Speaker 1: for potential sniper positions. He noted a roof area approximately
- 10:30Speaker 1: one hundred and sixty yards away from mister Kirk as
- 10:34Speaker 1: a potential shooting position and rushed there to look for evidence.
- 10:38Speaker 1: The suspected shooting position is adjacent to an open, publicly
- 10:42Speaker 1: accessible walkway. To access the suspected location, a person must
- 10:46Speaker 1: climb over a railing and then drop to the roof
- 10:49Speaker 1: only slightly below The UVU officer climbed over the railing
- 10:54Speaker 1: and down onto the roof. He then walked to the
- 10:57Speaker 1: suspected shooting position and confirmed a clear shooting corridor between
- 11:01Speaker 1: the position and mister Kirkse. He also noticed markings in
- 11:05Speaker 1: the gravel rooftop consistent with a sniper having lain on
- 11:09Speaker 1: the roof, impressions in the gravel potentially left by elbows, knees,
- 11:14Speaker 1: and feet of a person in a prone shooting position.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Police reviewed surveillance from the camera covering the roof and
- 11:20Speaker 1: discovered that are recorded an individual dressed in dark clothing
- 11:24Speaker 1: across the railing from the public walkway and drop onto
- 11:27Speaker 1: the roof at approximately twelve fifteen pm. Although the individual
- 11:32Speaker 1: moved out of the camera's view for a short time,
- 11:35Speaker 1: the camera again captured the individual running across the roof
- 11:38Speaker 1: and then low crawling to the area the UVU officer
- 11:42Speaker 1: recognized as where the suspected sniper had dropped into a
- 11:46Speaker 1: prone shooting position. After a short time, which matches the
- 11:50Speaker 1: known time of the shot. The individual arose and ran
- 11:53Speaker 1: across the roof to the northeast. This discovery led to
- 11:57Speaker 1: an intense review of UVU surveys LNTS recordings to attempt
- 12:01Speaker 1: to track and identify the suspect. Surveillance revealed the following
- 12:05Speaker 1: At approximately eleven to fifty one am, the suspect entered
- 12:09Speaker 1: campus from the north. He's seen wearing a black shirt
- 12:12Speaker 1: with an American flag in its center, a dark baseball cap,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and large sunglasses. Throughout the surveillance, the suspect keeps his
- 12:19Speaker 1: head down and rarely raises his head enough to get
- 12:22Speaker 1: a clear image of his face. As he proceeds across
- 12:26Speaker 1: the campus, he's seen walking with an unusual gait. The
- 12:29Speaker 1: suspect walks with a very little bending in his right leg,
- 12:33Speaker 1: consistent with a rifle being hidden in his pants. This
- 12:36Speaker 1: unusual gate continues until the suspect is seen crossing the railing,
- 12:40Speaker 1: off the open walkway and onto the roof, where he
- 12:43Speaker 1: leaves the camera's view. A camera later captures the suspect
- 12:47Speaker 1: as he runs across the roof to the suspected shooting position.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Immediately after the shot, was fired. A camera captures the
- 12:55Speaker 1: suspect running across the roof carrying an item whose shape
- 12:58Speaker 1: is consistent with a rifle. The suspect is then seen
- 13:01Speaker 1: climbing down from the roof. He appears to drop the
- 13:05Speaker 1: item he was carrying as he hits the ground in
- 13:08Speaker 1: a control fall. He then picks up the item and
- 13:11Speaker 1: runs toward the northeast and to the campus. All right, folks,
- 13:15Speaker 1: we're gonna wrap up right here, and in the next episode,
- 13:18Speaker 1: we're gonna pick up where we left off. All the
- 13:21Speaker 1: information that goes with this episode can be found in
- 13:24Speaker 1: the description box.
