- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Why are some writers successful and others are not?
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Is it talent, opportunity, or maybe just plain old luck?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Well, that's what many people believe.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: When they see a successful writer, they attribute it to chance.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: They assume that if you bloom, it means you happen to get planted in a good garden, and somebody chose to water you.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: They see success as something that's totally out of your control, and the best you can hope for is that somebody takes pity on you and gives you a shot.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Well, here is a different perspective.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: You can choose to bloom wherever you're planted.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Today we all have access to the same resources.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: There's so much great free content on YouTube, podcasts, blogs, and inexpensive books that you can basically get the equivalent of a master's level education practically for free.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: So it's not so much about the opportunities you have, instead, it's what you do with those opportunities.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And today we all have more opportunities as writers than at any other time in history.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: In the 2008 movie The Dark Knight, which is one of the best movies ever made, by the way, the Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent carries a two-headed coin as a symbol of his freedom to make the best of any situation.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: He says, I don't leave anything up to chance, I make my own luck.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Well, the truth is you don't have to wait to get planted in a different garden.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: You don't need to wait for somebody else to pour into you.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: You can make your own luck.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And you can do that by blooming right where you're planted.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: You can invest in yourself and take advantage of all the resources right there at your fingertips.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Think about a book, a YouTube video, a podcast, or a course that you can access right now.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's something that you've started and never finished.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Before the end of the day, spend just 10 minutes with it and take action on what you've learned.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Speaking of resources that can really help you, I want to thank today's sponsor, the upcoming Daily Writer Retreat.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: You know, listening to podcasts and reading emails and books and getting on Zoom calls like we've just talked about in this episode, all those things are great, but there's nothing quite like being in a small group of other writers who are making their writing dreams come true by publishing books and building their businesses.
