- 0:24Hello, and welcome to Talking FACS, what you need to know about family,
- 0:28food, finance, and fitness.
- 0:30I am your host, Mindy McCulley, Extension Specialist for Instructional Support
- 0:34with Family and Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Kentucky.
- 0:38We are housed in the Martin Gatton College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment.
- 0:43Eating is a necessity of life, and we have to spend money to be able to eat well.
- 0:50But on this episode, eating well on a healthy budget,
- 0:55Kelly May, Extension Senior Associate for Family Finance and Resource Management,
- 1:02is going to be giving us tips on how to do just that. So welcome, Kelly.
- 1:08Thank you. I'm really glad to be on here. We would all like to save money on
- 1:12food because while it is a necessity, we don't want too much of our budget going to food.
- 1:18But we also want to ensure that we are eating a healthy diet that is meeting
- 1:25our nutritional goals while staying within certain budget constraints.
- 1:29Is it possible to eat healthy while saving money?
- 1:34It is. It sounds like a magic trick, doesn't it? Exactly.
- 1:38But, you know, there are ways to save money that may not be as healthy.
- 1:43And so we don't necessarily want to do those things, right?
- 1:46So we don't want to stop eating as often as we need to eat or just buy the foods
- 1:51that are cheaper that aren't adding anything beneficial to our nutritional intake.
- 1:56So there are some strategies that we can use to fit a tight food budget around
- 2:02being able to choose healthy options that will be good for us.
- 2:07And the Department of Agriculture says that inflation has gone up for a lot
- 2:13of different categories that they measure, but food was the second highest category
- 2:18increase in the last several years.
- 2:21So we all know the prices are going up. So we want to use any tips we can, right?
- 2:26To get some food that's a little bit better for us. That's exactly right.
- 2:31So when we're thinking about tips or strategies for saving money on our food
- 2:38budgets, what are some recommendations that you have for us?
- 2:41Well, there's actually some things we can do before we even leave to go to the
- 2:45store. One of them is to inventory.
- 2:48Take stock of what's in your pantry and your refrigerator. Don't forget the fridge.
- 2:52Yes. We need to look at what we have before we go buy more.
- 2:56So we don't duplicate or get things that we don't want to have too much stock on hand.
- 3:02And also that helps us keep in mind the expiration dates. And we can kind of make a game of it.
- 3:08You kind of create these meal plans centered around what you need to use up
- 3:11first so that you don't have the waste.
- 3:14And of course, eliminating that waste helps you save money too.
- 3:18You don't have to buy things again that you've already bought once and ended up throwing away.
- 3:22Another way to do it is to plan your meals ahead.
- 3:26And if you can plan meals that use similar ingredients, you can mix and match to kind of save time.
- 3:31And that helps you both saving time in the grocery grocery and the kitchen.
- 3:36So when you're cooking, if you are grabbing similar things all the time,
- 3:40it'll take you a little less time to prep. Sure. Yeah.
- 3:43And if you know where those things are in the grocery store,
- 3:46then you can go directly to them and not be tempted by passing lots of other
- 3:50things that might bust your budget.
- 3:54Exactly. We don't fill the cart with that extra stuff or wander around the store.
- 3:58It's a time saver. Yes, exactly.
- 4:00So now that we're in the grocery store? What are some strategies that we can
- 4:05use to ensure that we aren't spending more money than we want to?
- 4:09A list will help because you can, again, avoid buying things on a whim.
- 4:14So you could keep your pantry well supplied, but sticking to the list will help
- 4:19you keep to the things you need and not all the extra things that maybe just
- 4:24sound good in the moment.
- 4:26You need to allow a little flexibility though. So think about sales,
- 4:30what fresh fruits and vegetables are on sales, what lean proteins are on sales,
- 4:34and be careful when you purchase perishables.
- 4:39I know sometimes I get excited by the really good looking fruits and vegetables,
- 4:44and I might buy a little bit more than my family's willing to take in in a week.
- 4:49And again, we don't want to have that food waste.
- 4:52So So make sure that what you purchase, if it's perishable, is something you
- 4:56can use within a week or if you can preserve it by freezing it or another method
- 5:01of preservation so you can shop for that fresh.
- 5:06Really good inventory that is got a lot of nutritional value,
- 5:11but we don't want to spend more than we have to.
- 5:15And another way to do that is coupons and deals.
- 5:19So not just paper coupons, but digital coupons, whether you're shopping in person
- 5:24or using an online shopping cart, there's lots of ways to snip a few cents off here and there.
- 5:29And also when you're in the store, or check for a discounted cart.
- 5:33A lot of places will have like discounted produce or oops, we bake too much
- 5:38kind of racks in the store.
- 5:41And as long as it's something that you will definitely eat and it fits in your
- 5:45plan, maybe you can substitute one of those for a full price item.
- 5:49Just make sure you eat those things more quickly so they don't spoil.
- 5:52And I like to shop in season when I am purchasing fruits and vegetables because
- 5:59they tend to be lower cost because they are more plentiful.
- 6:03You know, supply and demand tells us that when you have more of something available
- 6:07than usually, the cost goes down.
- 6:09So if you shop in season, then your fresh fruits and vegetables are going to
- 6:13be just a little bit cheaper than they are in off-season.
- 6:17That's going to be a cost saver. And think of different types of meals than
- 6:21you might be used to. Consider something new. Be adventurous.
- 6:24I know that Plate it up! Kentucky Proud has a lot of fun recipes,
- 6:29and some of them are for meatless options.
- 6:32Protein can be great for us nutritionally in our diet,
- 6:35but there are plant-based options now and non-meat proteins such as beans and
- 6:41nuts and others that can be very nutritional and good for you and might make
- 6:46an exciting change for something once or twice a week.
- 6:49So those are things to consider. And finally, I wanted to mention leftovers.
- 6:55Making extra can help you save time as well as money.
- 6:58So if you have the quantity and you need to use it, go ahead and cook it and
- 7:02make it a plan to have that again the next night.
- 7:05Say you roast a chicken and you don't eat it all the first night,
- 7:08you don't have to eat it the same way the next night.
- 7:11You can and dress it up and do something different with it and have a totally
- 7:15different thing the next day.
- 7:16Yeah, I think those are all great tips because nobody wants to have a boring diet.
- 7:21And so if you can change things up just a little bit to make them new and exciting,
- 7:27that's going to entice your palate to enjoy it. Sounds delicious. I'm hungry.
- 7:33Eating well can be a budget-friendly option.
- 7:37So if we take the time to shop well,
- 7:41and shop our pantries, and shop our refrigerators, and really pay attention
- 7:46to what we're selecting, then we can ensure that we are meeting our nutritional
- 7:51needs as well as our budget needs.
