- 2:19Speaker 2: to fifty eight. Tony the Taylor Text three zero four
- 2:21Speaker 2: nine three five five zero zero wad Welcome to the
- 2:24Speaker 2: show now our good friend from the Clay Center, Taylor
- 2:26Speaker 2: gew Good morning, welcome to the show.
- 2:28Speaker 5: Good morning, happy to be here.
- 2:30Speaker 2: All right, I understand you have a big announcement for us. Yeah,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and you're just like, you know, like bouncing off the
- 2:37Speaker 2: walls over here with this a big announcement about a
- 2:41Speaker 2: show coming to the Clay Center. So I'm gonna get
- 2:42Speaker 2: out of your way so I don't get hit by
- 2:45Speaker 2: dripping enthusiasm. Tell us who's coming to the clays Well.
- 2:49Speaker 6: I'm not sure if you've ever watched the show land
- 2:51Speaker 6: Man or any of the Taylor Sheridan shows.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Yellowstone. He has a whole slew of them.
- 2:57Speaker 6: But the lead actor for the show, Landman, Bill Bob Thornton,
- 3:00Speaker 6: has his own rock band called The box Masters, and
- 3:03Speaker 6: they are going to be coming to Charleston this summer.
- 3:06Speaker 2: You sort of teased that the last time you were here,
- 3:09Speaker 2: I did, I did. You're you're not very good at it,
- 3:11Speaker 2: because last time you were here, you said, we'll have
- 3:14Speaker 2: an announcement coming up on the twenty fourth, which is today,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and you said, I will. I'll just say this. If
- 3:21Speaker 2: you're a fan of Landman, you're going to like this.
- 3:23Speaker 2: So I'm sitting there thinking, Okay, Sam Elliott is coming
- 3:26Speaker 2: in concert, so he's out, So so Billy Bob Thornton is.
- 3:31Speaker 6: Yes, he is going on a national tour with his group,
- 3:33Speaker 6: The box Masters this summer June, July, August, just for
- 3:36Speaker 6: the summer months he's releasing. They are releasing a new
- 3:39Speaker 6: album on June twelfth, called in the Bay. It's their
- 3:41Speaker 6: twenty first album. For those who aren't familiar with The
- 3:44Speaker 6: box Masters, their sixties inspired classic rock and roll, inspired
- 3:49Speaker 6: by the Beatles, Beach Boys, that kind of vibe. So
- 3:53Speaker 6: they're going to be coming to the Clay Center on
- 3:55Speaker 6: July twenty fifth, seven thirty PM show on a Saturday
- 3:58Speaker 6: night in the middle of summer. It's going to be
- 4:00Speaker 6: a really spectacular evening, a really great way to enjoy
- 4:05Speaker 6: a classic rock and roll like so many of us
- 4:06Speaker 6: love in the area.
- 4:07Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:08Speaker 2: And the thing about Billy Bob Thornton is, I mean
- 4:10Speaker 2: number one of must say this. He's an interesting cat.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I mean, he really really is. I have read a lot,
- 4:15Speaker 2: I've been a big fan of his for a long time,
- 4:16Speaker 2: and I absolutely love the show land Man. And for
- 4:19Speaker 2: me to say I love any television show made after
- 4:22Speaker 2: like nineteen seventy eight, it's kind of saying something. But
- 4:25Speaker 2: my wife and I kind of got hooked on Landman.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Of course, I'm a Taylor Sheridan guy too. I've watched Yellowstone.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I loved Tulsa King's really my favorite show. I love
- 4:34Speaker 2: Tulsa King the Taylor Sheridan does. But Billy Bob, I've
- 4:37Speaker 2: been a big fan for a long time and he
- 4:39Speaker 2: does a great job as Tommy in Landmann. But a
- 4:41Speaker 2: lot of people may not realize that he is a musician.
- 4:44Speaker 2: And when you see him in his interviews, he has
- 4:47Speaker 2: a very interesting way of dressing usually, and he looks
- 4:51Speaker 2: more like a sixty seventies rock star than he does
- 4:54Speaker 2: on Landman or whatever role he's playing.
- 4:56Speaker 6: Absolutely, and it's really interesting too. It was one of
- 4:58Speaker 6: the things when you know, we were ironing out the
- 5:00Speaker 6: details of the show. You know, Billy Bob Thornton is
- 5:04Speaker 6: very particular about making sure that you know on the
- 5:08Speaker 6: images and the things that are promoting the show that
- 5:10Speaker 6: it's not him. It's not just a big old picture
- 5:13Speaker 6: of him up there. It's the group. He takes a
- 5:16Speaker 6: lot of pride in the box Masters and the work
- 5:18Speaker 6: they've done. I mean, twenty one albums. That's that's impressive.
- 5:22Speaker 6: That's a lot of time and effort in creativity, and
- 5:25Speaker 6: he really wants the box Masters to shine.
- 5:28Speaker 5: So it's truly going to be a special.
- 5:30Speaker 6: Evening and it's we always hear fun stories too about
- 5:32Speaker 6: when he's on tour. He's just, such, like you said,
- 5:34Speaker 6: an interesting guy. He'll just you know, pop out and
- 5:37Speaker 6: be wandering around. We'll come to the merchant table randomly
- 5:39Speaker 6: just be like, hey, guys, how's it going.
- 5:41Speaker 2: You know, he is a very interesting fellow from everything
- 5:44Speaker 2: I have read about him. I don't know if I
- 5:47Speaker 2: told you this on or off the air of the
- 5:48Speaker 2: last time you were here. But one of the one
- 5:51Speaker 2: of the many quirks of Billy Bob Thornton is is
- 5:54Speaker 2: he does not like antiques. He has a fear of
- 5:57Speaker 2: phobia of antiques. I'm dead serious. Look it up if
- 6:00Speaker 2: you don't. But I'm no, I'm dead serious.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Oh I believe you.
- 6:03Speaker 2: So I'm just saying I don't know. You know, it's
- 6:06Speaker 2: been a while since I was a backstage at the
- 6:09Speaker 2: show at the Clay Center. I brought when I worked
- 6:10Speaker 2: with Landau. I brought Landale back there, and I've been
- 6:13Speaker 2: all over the clay Center. Actually got Landau lost inside
- 6:16Speaker 2: the clay Center. That's another story for another not that's
- 6:18Speaker 2: another story. Well, the bad thing is it was about
- 6:21Speaker 2: twenty seconds before he was supposed to go out on stage,
- 6:23Speaker 2: and my job was to bring Landau to the stage,
- 6:26Speaker 2: and we got lost somewhere like and I don't know,
- 6:30Speaker 2: like a boiler room or sometimes a place we were
- 6:33Speaker 2: and I've lost six foot six African American singer with
- 6:37Speaker 2: drades with with with dreadlocks on me. But anyway, so,
- 6:42Speaker 2: but I forget where I was even going with that.
- 6:45Speaker 2: But I had read an interview about Billy Bob Thornton
- 6:48Speaker 2: read a lot about him. He does have this phobia
- 6:52Speaker 2: of antiques. So I wonder if you've got you know,
- 6:57Speaker 2: if you're if you got a grandfather clock back there,
- 7:00Speaker 2: you might want to move it out.
- 7:01Speaker 5: I'll make sure it gets in storage.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It's going to be a fantastic show. And I think,
- 7:07Speaker 2: to me, it just goes to show you that the
- 7:09Speaker 2: Clay Center is so I don't want to say eclectic,
- 7:13Speaker 2: but varied in what the kind of productions that you do.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Last time you hear you're talking about blue and there
- 7:19Speaker 2: have been so many great musical performances there. There's so many,
- 7:22Speaker 2: you know, everything from the Symphony on Doubt and now
- 7:25Speaker 2: you're bringing in the Box mass Masters. I want to
- 7:28Speaker 2: say box Cutters, the Box the Box Masters featuring Billy
- 7:32Speaker 2: Bob Thornton. But just what you do with to Clay.
- 7:34Speaker 6: Center, I know, I mean this summer alone, we have
- 7:37Speaker 6: you know, we have the Princess Bride with Carrie always.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Coming and doing a Q and A.
- 7:41Speaker 6: We have Magnolia Boulevard and would bine local more emerging
- 7:45Speaker 6: artists performing. We've got Chicago the Band, We've got Vince
- 7:48Speaker 6: Gill now we've got the box Masters Blue. I mean,
- 7:52Speaker 6: it's quite literally just never ending, and that's just our performance.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Side of things.
- 7:55Speaker 2: So yeah, thinkin. We're talking with Taylor you from the
- 7:58Speaker 2: Clay Center. It's nine fifteen Vland Show and five Vidylie
- 8:01Speaker 2: brought to you a party by Hustin's Pizza This month
- 8:03Speaker 2: get a large at and inch Pepperoni pizza and Pepperoni
- 8:05Speaker 2: Cowzone on twenty one ninety nine. Find your local Hustans
- 8:08Speaker 2: for pickup dining or delivered Hustan's Pizza dot com. My
- 8:11Speaker 2: man Rob Real from our sister station ninety six one
- 8:13Speaker 2: KWS listening to us right now, just sent me a
- 8:16Speaker 2: text and said he can confirm Billy Bob Thornton's phobia
- 8:18Speaker 2: of antiques. So there you go. So as now we
- 8:23Speaker 2: are getting into the spring and summer months, and you
- 8:26Speaker 2: and I talked about this a little bit last time
- 8:28Speaker 2: you were here. There's always stuff going on to the
- 8:30Speaker 2: Clay Center. That nothing, I mean everything we just mentioned,
- 8:34Speaker 2: not with Standy, There's always all kinds of other things
- 8:37Speaker 2: going on the clay Center.
- 8:38Speaker 6: Oh yeah, absolutely, I mean we're we're gearing up to
- 8:41Speaker 6: have a really big, big, impactful summer. I mean, we're
- 8:45Speaker 6: starting off here in April, April eighteenth, we're having a
- 8:48Speaker 6: bubble Blast party at the Clay Center. So anything bubble related,
- 8:52Speaker 6: from a million little ones to the ones that can
- 8:55Speaker 6: cover an entire kid's body and go around them, It's
- 8:58Speaker 6: going to be a lot of fun. But we're really
- 9:00Speaker 6: kicking off summer with our Clay Center block party as
- 9:02Speaker 6: our first time we're ever going to be doing that.
- 9:04Speaker 6: That's gonna be Saturday, May sixteenth. We're gonna have live music.
- 9:08Speaker 6: There's gonna be fire trucks and steamrollers and all these.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Steamrollers, yes, steamrollers, fire trucks and steamrollers.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Lots of big vehicles.
- 9:18Speaker 6: There's going to be rocket launches and balloons and screen printing.
- 9:23Speaker 6: We're closing off the road in front of the building.
- 9:25Speaker 6: I mean, it's going to be a big outdoor kick
- 9:27Speaker 6: off to someone.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Where did this come from?
- 9:30Speaker 6: A lot of us just came together and we're thinking of,
- 9:32Speaker 6: you know, what can we do to really just have fun.
- 9:37Speaker 6: I mean, we don't use the outside of the Clay
- 9:39Speaker 6: Center the front of the building as much as we
- 9:41Speaker 6: would like to, and so we started brainstorming ways of
- 9:43Speaker 6: what can we do too before it gets too hot?
- 9:45Speaker 5: Outside.
- 9:47Speaker 6: Really take advantage of that and just do something fun.
- 9:50Speaker 6: I mean, we're we're always brainstorming different and new things
- 9:53Speaker 6: to do. So and after that, in June, we're going
- 9:56Speaker 6: to have a We're calling up fairy Tales and fab
- 10:00Speaker 6: it's going to be Princesses and star Wars and all
- 10:05Speaker 6: of our favorite epics and stories, and we're encouraging people
- 10:08Speaker 6: to come in costumes. So every month we're going to
- 10:11Speaker 6: be having a really big event at the Clay Center
- 10:13Speaker 6: that's going to encourage a lot of people to come out,
- 10:16Speaker 6: a lot of participation, a lot of really cool activities.
- 10:18Speaker 5: So it's going to be a really good time.
- 10:20Speaker 2: It's certainly sounds like it. And I mean there's always
- 10:24Speaker 2: something going on to the Clay I was online the other
- 10:26Speaker 2: day was looking at your schedule of events and it's
- 10:29Speaker 2: just incredible the things that you have and the things
- 10:31Speaker 2: you have. You have something literally every day, and sometimes
- 10:34Speaker 2: people don't realize it because it's not always the big
- 10:37Speaker 2: concert or something like that. There's something every day going on.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I mean our education staff does all of
- 10:42Speaker 6: these really cool science demonstrations. They have these cards where
- 10:45Speaker 6: they're doing nitrogen gas explosions or Yeah, they're making little
- 10:50Speaker 6: rockets and they're launching them across the entryway of the building.
- 10:53Speaker 6: I mean, there's constantly little things going on. I mean,
- 10:56Speaker 6: one of the really cool things we're doing next week
- 10:58Speaker 6: is in our maker space Putnam and Cabble Counties, a
- 11:01Speaker 6: lot of the counties.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Are in spring break next week.
- 11:03Speaker 6: They are making three D laser cut dinosaurs that you
- 11:07Speaker 6: can hang from your ceilings. And I'm talking eighteen inch
- 11:10Speaker 6: pterodactyls that are three dimensional that you get to cut out,
- 11:13Speaker 6: assemble on your own and you can take them home
- 11:15Speaker 6: with you and hang them from your ceiling free with
- 11:17Speaker 6: your museum mission, no extra cost, nothing. It's not some
- 11:21Speaker 6: special workshop. It's just something fun we're doing down in
- 11:23Speaker 6: our maker space.
- 11:24Speaker 2: And this may not necessarily be in your wheelhouse, but
- 11:26Speaker 2: I do want to throw this out there. These things
- 11:28Speaker 2: that we talk about the Clay Center, whether it's musical,
- 11:30Speaker 2: whether it's educational or whatever, these things are not possible
- 11:35Speaker 2: without sponsors and without groups like they're the Friends of
- 11:38Speaker 2: Clay and things of that nature. So I mean, think
- 11:41Speaker 2: about that when you're thinking about making donations or whatever.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Whether you're a business or whether you're an individual, These
- 11:48Speaker 2: things do cost money and if you can help them out,
- 11:51Speaker 2: I'm sure they would appreciate it.
- 11:53Speaker 6: Yeah. Absolutely, I mean the Clay Center a lot of
- 11:54Speaker 6: people don't know or understand that we're a nonprofit, so
- 11:58Speaker 6: we rely entirely on donations and the money that our
- 12:02Speaker 6: community gives back, and so we're continuing to explore ways
- 12:05Speaker 6: that we too can give back the community and we
- 12:07Speaker 6: can support each other and you know, always looking for
- 12:10Speaker 6: local businesses that we can collaborate with local artists.
- 12:13Speaker 5: So that's something that we continue to explore.
- 12:15Speaker 6: And we are eternally thankful to every single person who
- 12:17Speaker 6: donates their time and energy and money to making the
- 12:20Speaker 6: Clay Center and everything we do possible.
- 12:22Speaker 2: We appreciate you coming in here and joining us today
- 12:26Speaker 2: and also want to say it's going to be a
- 12:29Speaker 2: fantastic show. And so in case people are tuning in late,
- 12:33Speaker 2: this was the big announcement that was made give us
- 12:36Speaker 2: all the details again.
- 12:37Speaker 6: Billy, Bob Thornton and the Box Masters are going to
- 12:40Speaker 6: be coming to the Clay Center of this summer Saturday,
- 12:42Speaker 6: July twenty fifth, at seven thirty pm. Tickets will be
- 12:45Speaker 6: going on sale to Clay Center members tomorrow at ten am.
- 12:49Speaker 6: And then to the public on Friday at ten am.
- 12:52Speaker 6: So you can get those at our website, the Claycenter
- 12:55Speaker 6: dot org, or you can call or visit our box
- 12:57Speaker 6: office and our box office staff will be more than
- 12:59Speaker 6: how to help handle that.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Transaction for you.
- 13:01Speaker 2: All right, And just remember the phobia that Billy both
- 13:04Speaker 2: Thornton has.
- 13:05Speaker 6: I will hide any and all antique.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Well, that means that our main Steve Animal from ninety
- 13:10Speaker 2: eight to seven of the mounth in Wild and Wonderful
- 13:12Speaker 2: Classic Rock, probably should not be back there because there
- 13:14Speaker 2: will be no show.
- 13:15Speaker 5: We'll put a picture of his face up front. I'll
- 13:16Speaker 5: make sure security.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't have Animal Center. Speaking of antiques, don't
- 13:21Speaker 2: have animals standing around back there. Taylor View from the Clayson.

- 16:46Speaker 2: he does. He likes to downplay his name in this
- 16:50Speaker 2: because the band has been around forever. They're called the Boxmasters,
- 16:53Speaker 2: but elevant in the room is Billy Bob Thornton is
- 16:55Speaker 2: the leader of the band. So Billy Bob Thornton and
- 16:58Speaker 2: the Band coming to the Clay on the twenty fifth,
- 17:02Speaker 2: and we'll have more information posted about that. Officially, the
- 17:05Speaker 2: announcement doesn't come to ten this morning, but we don't
- 17:07Speaker 2: really follow the rules here and Taylor kind of gives
- 17:10Speaker 2: us a little inside information when she stops by. Jason Pizzitella,
- 17:13Speaker 2: CEO of the Contractors Association of West Virginia, joined us
- 17:16Speaker 2: now live from the Kylo Sema Convention Center. Good morning, sir,
- 17:19Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Good morning Dave, thanks for having me on the show again.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. And we just had that
- 17:26Speaker 2: big announcement about the Billy Bob Thornton and his Band
- 17:29Speaker 2: concert coming to the Clay Center on July twenty fifth.
- 17:34Speaker 2: The question is what sort of instrument does Jason Pizzitella play.
- 17:39Speaker 4: You know, I took some guitar lessons and I took
- 17:42Speaker 4: some violin lessons way back in the day, but I
- 17:44Speaker 4: don't have.
- 17:45Speaker 11: Either of those qualities as we stand here today.
- 17:47Speaker 2: So you could be the West Virginia version of Charlie Daniels,
- 17:51Speaker 2: is that what you're saying, guitar and violin or fiddle.
- 17:55Speaker 4: I would give it my best shot that I wouldn't
- 17:57Speaker 4: want to let down all my fans.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Okay, I got you. We'll stick with contracting and stuff
- 18:02Speaker 2: for you. Okay, my friend. Now you got the big
- 18:03Speaker 2: event and you're actually at the Connellseum of Convention Center
- 18:06Speaker 2: as we speak.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Yeah, Move Inday started this morning for our exhibitors. We
- 18:12Speaker 4: have about three hundred and fifty this year, give or take,
- 18:15Speaker 4: and expect about anywhere from three thousand to four thousand
- 18:19Speaker 4: people to come through the Civic Center.
- 18:21Speaker 11: Coliseum starting tomorrow morning.
- 18:24Speaker 4: And we're really excited about it and excited to bring
- 18:26Speaker 4: this back to Charleston for a forty seventh year.
- 18:29Speaker 2: And this is something you talk about having three or
- 18:32Speaker 2: four thousand people. I mean, this ranks right up there
- 18:34Speaker 2: with the biggest events in Charleston each year.
- 18:37Speaker 11: I think it does.
- 18:38Speaker 4: And what makes us really excited about this forty seventh
- 18:42Speaker 4: episode of West Virginia Expo is we teamed up with
- 18:46Speaker 4: our partners at the West Virginia Manufacturers Association and the
- 18:50Speaker 4: Gas and Oil Association of West Virginia because all of
- 18:54Speaker 4: us collectively have workforce recruitment and retention issues, and so
- 18:57Speaker 4: what we decided to do was at a emphasis on
- 19:00Speaker 4: safety and workforce recruitment, which will happen Thursday this week
- 19:04Speaker 4: at the Civic Center, and we're really excited for all
- 19:07Speaker 4: of those industries to come together.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Well and with you putting this added emphasis on the
- 19:12Speaker 2: safety aspect of it, it's very important. But one of
- 19:15Speaker 2: the things that I like about this event, and again
- 19:18Speaker 2: this is the forty seventh year of the thing has
- 19:19Speaker 2: been going on, is the networking possibilities. I mean, it's
- 19:25Speaker 2: amazing because you get all of these people from literally
- 19:28Speaker 2: all over the country that are coming to this thing,
- 19:31Speaker 2: three to four thousand people that'll be there, and if
- 19:34Speaker 2: you can't exchange a couple of business cards or phone
- 19:36Speaker 2: numbers there, I don't know what to tell you.
- 19:39Speaker 4: I think that's absolutely true. Dave and everybody involved in
- 19:42Speaker 4: the construction and design industries will be at the Charleston
- 19:46Speaker 4: Civic Center starting tomorrow for a couple of days. And
- 19:51Speaker 4: I think the reason why this is so successful every
- 19:53Speaker 4: year is once one is we have a really dedicated industry,
- 19:56Speaker 4: But two, I think people are really believing in West
- 19:59Speaker 4: Virginia leaving in the industry. They know that there are
- 20:02Speaker 4: some really exciting things ongoing as we speak here today,
- 20:05Speaker 4: but also some really exciting announcements can for the future,
- 20:09Speaker 4: and it's going to keep our workforce busy for a
- 20:11Speaker 4: long long time, and we're really excited about that.
- 20:13Speaker 2: And again, Jason, when they I mean, if nothing else,
- 20:16Speaker 2: when they come to the event and they drive down
- 20:19Speaker 2: Virginia Street in Charleston, when they get off the exit
- 20:21Speaker 2: of the sixty four, you're going to see construction everywhere
- 20:24Speaker 2: on your way to the coliseum and convention Center.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean from PoCA Valley Banks to the Remmington
- 20:30Speaker 4: Building to the addition to the Kanwall County Judicial Annex
- 20:33Speaker 4: Virginia Street. If anyone listening today has not been down
- 20:37Speaker 4: Virginia Street in the last ten months, please take a
- 20:40Speaker 4: trip down there on your next visit to Charleston. And
- 20:42Speaker 4: we're really excited about all the new construction going on
- 20:45Speaker 4: down there and all the workers that are making it possible.
- 20:48Speaker 2: I want to talk about the state of construction in
- 20:51Speaker 2: West Virginia. You alluded to it to Jason a little
- 20:53Speaker 2: bit earlier. You know, we got new core, we got
- 20:55Speaker 2: all these big announcements to keep coming up. A lot
- 20:58Speaker 2: of growth in Mason, and a lot of growth in
- 21:00Speaker 2: Putnam Can, a lot of growth in the Eastern Panhandle.
- 21:03Speaker 2: There's a lot of stuff being built here in West
- 21:06Speaker 2: Virginia these days.
- 21:08Speaker 11: Yeah, there is.
- 21:09Speaker 4: And I think you know a lot of people only
- 21:12Speaker 4: often notice the orange barrels and cones on the road,
- 21:16Speaker 4: you know, when they're driving to work or to church
- 21:17Speaker 4: or to school. But there is really so much bigger
- 21:20Speaker 4: going on beyond the highway and bridge program right now.
- 21:23Speaker 4: And we're blessed at the AWV to represent not just
- 21:26Speaker 4: the highway contractors, but building and utility contractors as well.
- 21:30Speaker 4: And all the broadband that's being installed right now through
- 21:33Speaker 4: the investments from the federal government is just really excited.
- 21:36Speaker 4: It's keeping our members busy. But what it's also doing
- 21:39Speaker 4: is making that recruitment and retention for our workforce that
- 21:42Speaker 4: much more pressing, because we have a lot of second
- 21:45Speaker 4: or third generation owned companies in West Virginia and they're
- 21:48Speaker 4: looking to see who is going to be the next
- 21:51Speaker 4: generation of workers that can fulfill that vision that our
- 21:55Speaker 4: public agency owners want us to fulfill. And so that's
- 21:58Speaker 4: why events like this and the fact that we're emphasizing
- 22:01Speaker 4: safety and workforce on Thursday, I think makes.
- 22:05Speaker 11: It doubly important.
- 22:07Speaker 2: So how are we doing overall on retention of workforce
- 22:11Speaker 2: and getting people to work? I mean, you know, I
- 22:13Speaker 2: don't want to turn this negative, Jason, but you see
- 22:16Speaker 2: the news. You know, we report on it in West Virginia,
- 22:18Speaker 2: lowest workforce participation rate in America among able bodied adults.
- 22:23Speaker 2: How are we doing and what are we doing to
- 22:24Speaker 2: try to get the word out that all these companies,
- 22:28Speaker 2: everybody needs workers.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, it's never going to be exactly where
- 22:33Speaker 4: we want it to be, but I can tell you
- 22:35Speaker 4: it's getting slightly better.
- 22:37Speaker 11: I Mean, our.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Workforce participation rate, as you said, is low. It's too low,
- 22:42Speaker 4: and it's been the lowest and so we as an industry,
- 22:45Speaker 4: we decided, you know, we're going to try to do
- 22:47Speaker 4: something about this. And so three or four years ago
- 22:50Speaker 4: we started programs in our elementary schools called build it Up.
- 22:53Speaker 4: And we have programs for our adult and non traditional
- 22:57Speaker 4: students that can be found at billwv dot com. Because
- 23:00Speaker 4: what we wanted to do is we wanted to put
- 23:02Speaker 4: all of the resources about construction from the beginning, middle
- 23:06Speaker 4: to end, all in one place, so that parents, guidance, counselors, principles,
- 23:11Speaker 4: friends and family that have an influence on our young
- 23:15Speaker 4: people today can point them in the right direction that
- 23:18Speaker 4: a four year college degree is not for everyone, and
- 23:22Speaker 4: it's not a requirement anymore to be successful.
- 23:24Speaker 11: In West Virginia.
- 23:25Speaker 4: There are thousands of job openings, not just in the
- 23:28Speaker 4: industry that I represent, but also in the manufacturing industry
- 23:32Speaker 4: and the gas and oil industry. And so if people
- 23:35Speaker 4: want to stay in West Virginia, they can do it,
- 23:37Speaker 4: and oftentimes an employer will help pay for that man
- 23:40Speaker 4: or woman to go get a credentials so that they
- 23:42Speaker 4: can take that next step in their career.
- 23:44Speaker 11: And the state of West.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Virginia has also made serious investments in workforce recruitment and retention.
- 23:49Speaker 4: And we're seeing the needle move ever so slightly, Dave,
- 23:52Speaker 4: It's not moving by any stretch of the imagination like
- 23:55Speaker 4: doctor Brown and Marty McFly on back to the future,
- 23:58Speaker 4: but it's moving.
- 23:59Speaker 11: Just a little bit in the right direction.
- 24:00Speaker 2: And I think it's very positive too that our institutions
- 24:03Speaker 2: of higher learning, you know, whether it's a place like
- 24:06Speaker 2: like a Bridge Valley or We have so many of
- 24:08Speaker 2: them on the show, you know, from from State to
- 24:11Speaker 2: detect to Marshall, WVU, all these above that they are
- 24:15Speaker 2: setting down at the table, Jason, and they're sitting down
- 24:18Speaker 2: with those in industry and as opposed to the other
- 24:21Speaker 2: way around that it was for years, these institutions are
- 24:25Speaker 2: setting down with these companies and saying, look, tell us
- 24:28Speaker 2: what you need instead of doing it the exact opposite,
- 24:31Speaker 2: which we did for way too long. All right, mister
- 24:34Speaker 2: missus employer, what do you need so we can train
- 24:37Speaker 2: up our students to give you what you need.
- 24:41Speaker 11: I could have said it any better, Dave.
- 24:42Speaker 4: I mean, that's the beauty of the way I think
- 24:45Speaker 4: our community technical college system is structured in West Virginia,
- 24:49Speaker 4: and that is they are so nimble, they are so
- 24:51Speaker 4: flexible that institutions like Bridge Valley, like Southern, like Pierpont,
- 24:56Speaker 4: like New River that we work with on a very
- 24:58Speaker 4: regular basis, they say to us all the time, tell
- 25:01Speaker 4: us what you need, help us with the curriculum, how
- 25:04Speaker 4: you want it taught, so that your men and women
- 25:07Speaker 4: could be successful, and.
- 25:08Speaker 11: Let us do the rest.
- 25:10Speaker 4: And it really is making a difference. And of course,
- 25:12Speaker 4: frankly Dave, I don't know what we would do without them.
- 25:15Speaker 4: So we're very blessed to have that system in West
- 25:17Speaker 4: Virginia that's training that next generation so that we can
- 25:20Speaker 4: hire them and put them to work.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Talking again with Jason Visitel to the CEO of the
- 25:24Speaker 2: Contractors Association of West Virginia, and again you and I
- 25:28Speaker 2: had a conversation about this not long ago. I think
- 25:31Speaker 2: that I like the direction that higher educator. Well, let
- 25:35Speaker 2: me say, education is going in and realizing, as you stated,
- 25:39Speaker 2: that a four year college degree is simply not for everyone.
- 25:43Speaker 2: And I'm from the generation you know, a kid of
- 25:45Speaker 2: the nineteen eighties that was told you have to go
- 25:48Speaker 2: to college. And I love the fact that you're working
- 25:51Speaker 2: with kids and your members working with kids, and I
- 25:55Speaker 2: mean literally kids that have that aptitude that show it
- 25:58Speaker 2: or at least an interest in it as early is
- 26:00Speaker 2: third fourth, fifth grade, that hey, I am very good
- 26:03Speaker 2: with my hands, I'm very good at this or very
- 26:05Speaker 2: good at that. Let me start doing something now, as
- 26:09Speaker 2: opposed to waiting until Okay, I'm eighteen or nineteen years old.
- 26:11Speaker 2: What am I going to do with my life?
- 26:14Speaker 4: Yeah, And we've also noticed that some of the institutions
- 26:16Speaker 4: are also taking that same approach to recruiting, you know
- 26:20Speaker 4: that next generation. There are some really excellent construction management
- 26:24Speaker 4: programs in West Virginia, particularly at West Virginia University in
- 26:27Speaker 4: students Technology that is really doing a good job. And
- 26:30Speaker 4: I know I can speak for all of my members
- 26:32Speaker 4: that they just wish there were more seats in those
- 26:35Speaker 4: classes because of those twenty to thirty men and women
- 26:38Speaker 4: that graduate every year, if they want to stay in
- 26:40Speaker 4: West Virginia and work in West Virginia, every single one
- 26:43Speaker 4: of them will come out of that institution with a job.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I had a quick text here for you, and I
- 26:47Speaker 2: know you're busy. We'll let you get back to work.
- 26:48Speaker 2: But I mean I may be doing you a favor
- 26:50Speaker 2: because I'm getting you. I'm giving you a little bit
- 26:52Speaker 2: of a break here from the hard work that you're
- 26:55Speaker 2: doing over there. But somebody wanted to know about some
- 26:57Speaker 2: of these employers if they offer apprenticeships and then will
- 27:00Speaker 2: hire those people full time. Do they still do that
- 27:03Speaker 2: sort of thing?
- 27:04Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah they do.
- 27:06Speaker 4: I mean, our organization is about evenly divided between the
- 27:11Speaker 4: union contractors and non union contractors, and those apprenticeship programs
- 27:15Speaker 4: can apply to both, and anyone can go to billwv
- 27:20Speaker 4: dot com where everything is listed all in one place
- 27:23Speaker 4: if they want to have more information about that. But
- 27:26Speaker 4: that on the job training is critically important to making
- 27:30Speaker 4: sure that man or woman is successful because you can't
- 27:33Speaker 4: just look at it right from a classroom perspective, and
- 27:36Speaker 4: those apprenticeship programs are really important and they provide an
- 27:40Speaker 4: integral pipeline for our companies that are hiring that next generation.
- 27:45Speaker 2: All right, Jason, give us all the details on the
- 27:47Speaker 2: show the next couple of days.
- 27:50Speaker 4: Wvxpo dot com for more information. Everything kicks off tomorrow
- 27:54Speaker 4: at ten am. The show floors are open from ten
- 27:58Speaker 4: to six tomorrow and eight to noon on Saturday, and
- 28:04Speaker 4: if anybody wants to come just for the safety and
- 28:06Speaker 4: workforce component, please do so, and more information can be
- 28:09Speaker 4: found on the website. Registration is free, it's easy, and
- 28:13Speaker 4: if you don't want to do it online, just show
- 28:15Speaker 4: up tomorrow or Thursday and we will take good care
- 28:18Speaker 4: of them.
- 28:19Speaker 2: I think that's a very important thing to remember because
- 28:21Speaker 2: you're not going to be if you're in this field, man,
- 28:23Speaker 2: you're not going to have very many opportunities that you're
- 28:26Speaker 2: going to have everybody that is, anybody in the state
- 28:29Speaker 2: of West Virginia and beyond in one place for two
- 28:32Speaker 2: days at the Kytle Seeman Convention Center Wednesday and Thursday.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Networking opportunities abound and that's what it's all about, and
- 28:39Speaker 2: getting there and you can meet these people and do
- 28:41Speaker 2: a little business. Chase to Pizzitella, CEO the Contractors Association
- 28:44Speaker 2: of West Virginia, appreciate you being here. Good luck with
- 28:46Speaker 2: everything the next a couple of days and we'll talk soon.
- 28:49Speaker 11: Thank you, Dave, have a good one do as well.

- 33:32Speaker 2: with thirteen News and Tonight Live anchor Manda Bear and
- 33:34Speaker 2: Me powered by a Selango law. It is actually, guys,
- 33:38Speaker 2: the one year anniversary of Metro News Midday. We started
- 33:43Speaker 2: what we lovingly call the experiment one year ago today
- 33:47Speaker 2: and it's been fun. We will reflect upon that show
- 33:52Speaker 2: and you are welcome to send in free gifts if
- 33:56Speaker 2: you wish. Now, Amanda, you know, my co gets a
- 34:01Speaker 2: little nervous when I say things like that, because you
- 34:03Speaker 2: know she's got ethics and stuff. But me, I'm like, hell, yes,
- 34:06Speaker 2: send me stuff. Man, I'll take it. I don't care,
- 34:09Speaker 2: especially meat and cheese. Can't go wrong with meat and cheese.
- 34:12Speaker 2: So anyway, we'll talk about that a little bit on
- 34:15Speaker 2: the show day. But yeah, one year I appreciate everybody
- 34:18Speaker 2: that listens to the show. You know, were somebody somewhere
- 34:23Speaker 2: got this idea. And Amanda and I have been friends
- 34:26Speaker 2: for twenty years. I mean, were not new to each other.
- 34:29Speaker 2: We've known each of the we've never worked together, and
- 34:31Speaker 2: somebody kind of got this idea. Well, what if we
- 34:33Speaker 2: took a TV person, a serious journalist to put them
- 34:37Speaker 2: together with you know that guy and see how it
- 34:40Speaker 2: works out, and again the response has been great and
- 34:43Speaker 2: we're having fun with it. So appreciate it because it
- 34:45Speaker 2: would not be possible without you. So we'll talk about
- 34:49Speaker 2: a little bit on the show today. Also, we're going
- 34:52Speaker 2: to continue talking about the state basketball tournament, and one
- 34:55Speaker 2: of the great stories for the basketball tournament out of
- 34:58Speaker 2: Class Single A the Tug Valley Panthers winning their third
- 35:02Speaker 2: straight championship. And what makes this unique, in my opinion, is,
- 35:08Speaker 2: you know, if you're not familiar with that part of
- 35:13Speaker 2: the world, and I am, being from one county over,
- 35:18Speaker 2: Tug Valley basketball is like a religion. I was joking
- 35:24Speaker 2: with somebody from down there yesterday and I said, it's
- 35:28Speaker 2: a cult, and they said, well, don't call it a cult.
- 35:30Speaker 2: I said, well, it's not. Cold is not the right
- 35:32Speaker 2: word because it gives a negative connotation, but it's very
- 35:36Speaker 2: important to the community and the way that this the
- 35:40Speaker 2: community just everything in the world revolves around Tug Valley
- 35:45Speaker 2: High School basketball and even some of the other sports
- 35:47Speaker 2: as well. So anyway, they won their third straight single
- 35:50Speaker 2: A championship, which in this era of transferring and so
- 35:54Speaker 2: on and so forth, is almost unheard of, but they
- 35:57Speaker 2: did it, and so we're going to talk to their coach,
- 35:59Speaker 2: and in thirdy eight years of radio, I feel pretty
- 36:02Speaker 2: confident I have never interviewed anybody named Rabbit, but Rabbit
- 36:06Speaker 2: Thompson is the coach and he's going to join us
- 36:09Speaker 2: on the show today. Also, we have a couple of
- 36:10Speaker 2: candidates on the show today. A candidate for Supreme Court
- 36:14Speaker 2: HL Kirkpatrick will stop by the show, and Democratic candidate
- 36:19Speaker 2: for US Senate or Rachel Fetti Anderson will be on
- 36:23Speaker 2: the show today as well. Plus, we get to open
- 36:25Speaker 2: line West Virginia on the one year anniversary of Metro
- 36:29Speaker 2: News Midday with thirteen News Into Night Live anchor Amanda
- 36:31Speaker 2: Baron and Me coming to an end today sponsored by
- 36:33Speaker 2: s Lango Law. On this show tomorrow, we're gonna spend
- 36:37Speaker 2: some time talking about West Virginia University's Day of Giving
- 36:40Speaker 2: and specifically things going on here in the Kanal Valley
- 36:43Speaker 2: related to such. Also, Canawan County Commissioner Natalie Tenant will
- 36:47Speaker 2: be on the show tomorrow as well. Texts says I
- 36:52Speaker 2: told you I get some texts. We got plenty. Tex
- 36:54Speaker 2: says I should not have to give an ID to
- 36:57Speaker 2: poll workers. Well, voter ID is the law and has
- 37:03Speaker 2: been since twenty eighteen in West Virginia. And it's one
- 37:06Speaker 2: of these things that is very very I don't I
- 37:08Speaker 2: don't want to say, very controversial, but it does elicit
- 37:15Speaker 2: a lot of response out of people. And I'm a
- 37:18Speaker 2: firm believer in voter ID. I always have been, you know,
- 37:23Speaker 2: And I hate to use the tired old adage like
- 37:25Speaker 2: everybody else does, well you have to use an ID
- 37:27Speaker 2: to do anything else, but it's true you do. And
- 37:31Speaker 2: in West Virginia there are several forms that is, fifteen, sixteen,
- 37:37Speaker 2: seventeen different forms of ID that you could use in
- 37:40Speaker 2: the state of West Virginia. And I'm a proponent of
- 37:45Speaker 2: voter ID, especially when they're so easily available, you know.
- 37:51Speaker 2: But this, the Save Act, could change a lot of things.
- 37:54Speaker 2: And I understand some of the concerns. And I mean,
- 37:56Speaker 2: we had Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who's a big proponent
- 37:59Speaker 2: of the of the bill on the show last week
- 38:01Speaker 2: and she has some concerns about it. She even though
- 38:04Speaker 2: she's a supporter. She said, there's a lot of things
- 38:06Speaker 2: that has to be, you know, worked out. And I
- 38:08Speaker 2: mentioned the example of going back to my days when
- 38:12Speaker 2: I work for the West Virginian Secretary of State's office,
- 38:14Speaker 2: and we would go into high schools to do voter
- 38:16Speaker 2: registration drives that as written, you, in order to register
- 38:22Speaker 2: to vote for the first time, would have to provide
- 38:25Speaker 2: proof of citizenship. Now that is a birth certificate. Okay,
- 38:30Speaker 2: don't know that a lot of high school kids have
- 38:34Speaker 2: access to that. And when voter registration drives are done
- 38:39Speaker 2: by the county, it's really the county I say, Secretary
- 38:41Speaker 2: of State's office. Really it's the county clerks that do
- 38:44Speaker 2: those in conjunction with the Secretary of State's office. You'd
- 38:49Speaker 2: have to give plenty of notice. All right, Mom and dad,
- 38:51Speaker 2: kids going to register, They're going to have to have
- 38:53Speaker 2: the birth certificate with them. And then there are the
- 38:55Speaker 2: concerns about name changes and things of that nature. So
- 38:57Speaker 2: going that notwithstanding, Senator cap on the show last week
- 39:01Speaker 2: said Okay, I'm for it, but we get some things
- 39:03Speaker 2: we got to work on, and and I respect her
- 39:06Speaker 2: for that. So in reference of the text, are there, yeah,
- 39:11Speaker 2: I have I have no issue with presenting an ID
- 39:15Speaker 2: to vote. Bigley Pickli Wiggly Hotline three zero four three

- 39:37Speaker 2: People say it's a texture.
- 39:41Speaker 14: Uh.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Tex says, it's a good thing. You're turning the rest
- 39:44Speaker 2: of the show over to the listeners because the first
- 39:46Speaker 2: half was terribly boring. Well that's because of your host.
- 39:51Speaker 2: I'm a boring kind of gap. Appreciate the text, though
- 39:58Speaker 2: Texas loved the midday show very much. Tex says it's
- 40:02Speaker 2: a shame on wvu's athletic department that they don't play
- 40:05Speaker 2: Marshall and football and basketball. Also a shame on wvu's
- 40:09Speaker 2: boosters and athletic department. I'm not fielding a softball team
- 40:12Speaker 2: a Big twelve conference that can't do can't do this
- 40:16Speaker 2: is shameful. Thanks. I could, if I tell you, I
- 40:20Speaker 2: could start the show every day, and I do touch
- 40:24Speaker 2: on sports from time to time, but we get enough
- 40:26Speaker 2: sports on I don't like to spend a whole lot
- 40:28Speaker 2: of time on sports unless it's, you know, something important.
- 40:31Speaker 2: But I could start to show every day by saying
- 40:37Speaker 2: WVU and Marshall, why don't they play? And I could
- 40:41Speaker 2: just set back and watch the text roll in, you know,
- 40:47Speaker 2: and not not really have to do a whole lot,
- 40:50Speaker 2: because that is a constant argument. It's a constant argument.
- 40:54Speaker 2: I'm one. And again anytime I say this, people say, well,
- 40:58Speaker 2: it's because you're a Marshall guy. What it's because you're
- 40:59Speaker 2: a Marshy doesn't mean you hate WVU, you know. But
- 41:04Speaker 2: I'm one that thinks the state is better off if
- 41:06Speaker 2: we play. I understand the arguments. The WVU has I
- 41:10Speaker 2: truly do so well, we don't have anything to gain
- 41:12Speaker 2: from it. So and it's not a rivalry unless you
- 41:15Speaker 2: win a few. And it's quite frankly, very lopsided between
- 41:18Speaker 2: my alma mater and between WVU. I get that. But
- 41:21Speaker 2: I just I think we're I think we're better off
- 41:24Speaker 2: when we play at least basketball, you know. But as
- 41:28Speaker 2: just me Texa says Florida guy here, Dave. Democratic Party
- 41:34Speaker 2: is working. It's hard now to block the Save America
- 41:36Speaker 2: Act as they did at blocking the Civil Rights Act
- 41:38Speaker 2: of nineteen sixty four, Same old racist game they play
- 41:43Speaker 2: now as they did sixty two years ago, still the
- 41:45Speaker 2: party of racism are the Democrats today? So apparently it's
- 41:50Speaker 2: according to a texture. Apparently we got the bird flu
- 41:54Speaker 2: here in kanawan County, the Office of Agriculture Agriculture Commissioner
- 41:58Speaker 2: Kent Leonhardt confirming the officially named Avian influenza is here.
- 42:03Speaker 2: But don't run out in panic or anything like that.
- 42:05Speaker 2: It was detected apparently in a backyard flock of chickens
- 42:10Speaker 2: here in Kanawha County, actually reported as is the standard
- 42:15Speaker 2: by the county to then the state Department of Agriculture.
- 42:19Speaker 2: But according to published reports, if you're thinking about having

- 46:28Speaker 2: need a vote. How can people taking your vote mark
- 46:30Speaker 2: your name off the voter registration list? Says as true,
- 46:37Speaker 2: uh Tex says, would in the high school setting be
- 46:40Speaker 2: a great place to do registration. It would be a
- 46:42Speaker 2: great setting and provide a call atmosphere and also a
- 46:44Speaker 2: great place to do a little educational programs about the
- 46:47Speaker 2: importance of voting. Well, it's as if you read the
- 46:49Speaker 2: job description of what I did with the Westernion Secretary
- 46:52Speaker 2: of States Office. One of the things I did, that's
- 46:55Speaker 2: the way, and you know, the voter registration. I say
- 46:59Speaker 2: Secretary of State office a lot, but voter registration ultimately
- 47:01Speaker 2: is up to the county and it's a county thing.
- 47:04Speaker 2: The Secretary of State's office just kind of helps out with,
- 47:07Speaker 2: all right, but it's a county thing. And the way
- 47:10Speaker 2: that we did it when I was in the office,
- 47:13Speaker 2: and the way that as far as I know, they
- 47:15Speaker 2: still do it in the office was we could contact
- 47:19Speaker 2: the county clerk's office a particular county, contact the school
- 47:24Speaker 2: and say, you know, we'd like to do voter registration drives.
- 47:27Speaker 2: And as I said, I'm sure they still do it
- 47:30Speaker 2: that same way. Go into a school. I'll just I'll
- 47:34Speaker 2: pick Saint Albans High School for an example, because that
- 47:36Speaker 2: was the school that I went to frequently. Go to
- 47:38Speaker 2: Saint Albans and you get with the student leaders there.
- 47:42Speaker 2: If a school had a Republican club and a Democrat club,
- 47:47Speaker 2: we would try to get both of them together, or
- 47:49Speaker 2: the student council or whatever, along with the teachers. The
- 47:51Speaker 2: county clerks would be there as well to do the
- 47:53Speaker 2: voter registration. But we didn't just sign up people to vote.
- 47:57Speaker 2: There was, as the Texas said, an educational part of
- 48:00Speaker 2: it as well, usually us getting up, one of us,
- 48:03Speaker 2: me at this particular school, given to speech about the
- 48:06Speaker 2: importance of voting. Totally nonpartisan. I would have students come
- 48:10Speaker 2: up and say, well, should I be a Republican or Democrat?
- 48:13Speaker 2: We're raising our hands going now, I'm not going there.
- 48:16Speaker 2: We're nonpartisan. That's not what we do here. And it
- 48:19Speaker 2: was a very successful program and it continues to be
- 48:23Speaker 2: a successful program. But that's exactly the way it was
- 48:26Speaker 2: done then, and I'm sure it's the way that it's done.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Now is we get you know, go into schools, your
- 48:30Speaker 2: registered students to vote, but not just to put numbers
- 48:32Speaker 2: on the rolls, to explain to them the importance of voting.
- 48:36Speaker 2: And we had all kinds of little exercises that we
- 48:40Speaker 2: that I used to do in the class. You know,
- 48:41Speaker 2: I like to have fun. So what I would do.
- 48:43Speaker 2: I would go into a classroom and at first, say
- 48:46Speaker 2: twenty five kids in the classroom, I would have all
- 48:49Speaker 2: twenty five stand up and I would say, okay, you
- 48:51Speaker 2: ten people, you ten students, sit down. You didn't vote
- 48:54Speaker 2: because you said you couldn't get off four and now
- 48:57Speaker 2: having three or four more sit down, you said you
- 49:00Speaker 2: didn't like any of the candidate, And so basically you'd
- 49:02Speaker 2: whittle it down to like two people stand it up,
- 49:05Speaker 2: and then we would say, okay, these two people just
- 49:07Speaker 2: decided for everybody else. And it kind of helped to
- 49:14Speaker 2: drill into their to the youngun's heads the importance of voting.
- 49:17Speaker 2: And that's why that's why we did it that way.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Had a lot of fun at that job, Tech said.
- 49:23Speaker 2: The WVU and Marshall Men's and Women's basketball games used
- 49:28Speaker 2: to take place every year at the Civic Center. It
- 49:29Speaker 2: was so much fun to attend. That former tradition needs
- 49:32Speaker 2: to be brought back. I am a big fan of
- 49:37Speaker 2: that of that game, and it was played when the legislature,
- 49:40Speaker 2: usually when the legislature was in session. That's normally the
- 49:43Speaker 2: way it was. So you get that natural rivalry between
- 49:46Speaker 2: the WVU and the Marshall factions there and get everybody
- 49:50Speaker 2: there together, and and I would love to see it
- 49:53Speaker 2: brought back, But you know, I'm a I'm a radio
