Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: That smile hasn't left your face. You're back. Zach Netto's
- 0:12Speaker 1: heroic ninth in ain't home run. Got the eternal optimist
- 0:16Speaker 1: Van Sterling ball back in the angels good graces?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Is that true?
- 0:24Speaker 3: Well, I got me back on your show, Thank you,
- 0:27Speaker 3: But no, I mean, look, we got two hits. We
- 0:29Speaker 3: struck out ten times. I think Oakland's a better Oakland's right,
- 0:35Speaker 3: I'm gonna call him Oakland. Still, they're not Sacramento. It'll
- 0:39Speaker 3: take me a long time to call them Las Vegas either. Look,
- 0:43Speaker 3: I'm glad we won. I think it's really good and
- 0:47Speaker 3: it was exciting. I feel bad for the picture for
- 0:52Speaker 3: the A's that's just heartbreaking. Had to rip his heart out.
- 0:55Speaker 3: But you know we've got beat. We got to beat
- 0:58Speaker 3: last week only giving up you hit. So it happens,
- 1:01Speaker 3: and it's baseball.
- 1:03Speaker 2: JT. Ginn.
- 1:04Speaker 1: The picture for the Athletics on Monday night took a
- 1:07Speaker 1: no hitter through eight innings and in the ninth inning,
- 1:12Speaker 1: Adam Fraser broke it up.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Adam Fraser who you refer.
- 1:15Speaker 1: To as or what closer? He's our closure, okay, closing
- 1:20Speaker 1: picture now as well. So he broke it up.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Zack netto.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Then uh powered the team to a win with a
- 1:28Speaker 1: walk off home run to center field, where he twirled
- 1:32Speaker 1: and he did the you can't see me face, and
- 1:35Speaker 1: he waved to the adoring fans in left field with
- 1:38Speaker 1: their shirts off that were yelling something, selling the team.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Oh they were selling, Oh, shell the team. I saw something.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Kurt Suzuka said he didn't know what they were saying,
- 1:48Speaker 1: but you seem to be able to make that out.
- 1:51Speaker 1: They were saying, sell the team.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I got I'm hard of hearing, but I can
- 1:55Speaker 3: figure I heard that loud and.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Clear, perfect if we didn't get to earlier. I am
- 2:01Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo, former Angel slugger. This is Sterling Ball who
- 2:05Speaker 1: is going to be a regular contributor to the show
- 2:08Speaker 1: and has been a fan of this team for six decades.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And I think what I was hoping if you wouldn't mind, Sterling,
- 2:16Speaker 1: we've talked, We talk all the time about this club.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Do you have any thoughts?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Is there any issue that's on your mind or an
- 2:22Speaker 1: individual that you would like to address with some sort
- 2:25Speaker 1: of a message.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Absolutely. One of the things that happens is you get
- 2:31Speaker 3: in business, and I've spent fifty years in business and
- 2:36Speaker 3: you know it spent a lot of time thinking about
- 2:37Speaker 3: your legacy. But if you did everything right and you
- 2:41Speaker 3: treated people right, and you communicated well, the legacy would
- 2:44Speaker 3: take care of itself. So I'm went a little message
- 2:47Speaker 3: to mister Moreno. I remember when you bought the team.
- 2:52Speaker 3: I remember seeing your wife and your family being so happy.
- 2:56Speaker 3: He said all the right things. You lowered the beer prices.
- 2:58Speaker 3: We had pretty much a good ten year run with you.
- 3:02Speaker 3: You did well in another business. You came into baseball.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I know you're a fan. I know you own part
- 3:08Speaker 3: of a minor league team in Salt Lake. And what
- 3:12Speaker 3: you did right away sign a bunch of free agents
- 3:14Speaker 3: and most of them didn't work out. You've come around
- 3:18Speaker 3: all a way where you find out through premiums and
- 3:21Speaker 3: the visiting teams that you can be fifth eighth in attendance.
- 3:25Speaker 3: But what you don't have is a good legacy. I mean,
- 3:28Speaker 3: and I think he got a chance to improve that.
- 3:32Speaker 3: How do you do that? You communicate honestly to your
- 3:36Speaker 3: communication style has to carry down through your organization. I
- 3:42Speaker 3: used to defend Perrymannassy, and I think he is such
- 3:46Speaker 3: a disrespectful, condescending It's like he's playing word with the journalists.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And then you have a PR department that for a
- 3:59Speaker 3: long time I thought was a public relations department, but
- 4:03Speaker 3: they spend more time trying to suppress news in stories,
- 4:09Speaker 3: and so I finally realized it's a PR company, it's
- 4:12Speaker 3: a private relations thing. So Artie, you could start communicating
- 4:17Speaker 3: and you could start really doing the things that will
- 4:22Speaker 3: be in a long term future for the club even
- 4:24Speaker 3: after you're gone. I think most fans want you to
- 4:27Speaker 3: rip the band aid off, trade whatever you can do
- 4:31Speaker 3: to get a lot of prospects to do, like several
- 4:34Speaker 3: successful teams have done. The White Sox are incredibly great
- 4:37Speaker 3: example of it. But while you have to do also
- 4:40Speaker 3: is build an infrastructure behind that that you took way
- 4:43Speaker 3: too long to build. In development player development, I think
- 4:47Speaker 3: I read about Colorado State and the art pitching a lab.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I read about different people sitting thing. You've got to
- 4:53Speaker 3: realize that you've got to grow the team, and then
- 4:55Speaker 3: you can supplement it with an occasional free agent signing.
- 4:59Speaker 3: But now what you're doing is we're buying a bunch
- 5:02Speaker 3: of scratching dent, a bunch of dal old bread and
- 5:05Speaker 3: hope that they deliver. Hope you can still do something
- 5:08Speaker 3: with them, it's just not going to happen. And also,
- 5:13Speaker 3: I think you've got to convince this that your your
- 5:15Speaker 3: team's playing to win. And when you guys play low
- 5:18Speaker 3: in Moncuta every day and you don't give guys like
- 5:22Speaker 3: Trout a day off or even o'happy who came back
- 5:25Speaker 3: from a fractured thumb in five days, that's not really
- 5:30Speaker 3: one to win to me. I mean, you're not playing
- 5:32Speaker 3: your best players and it shows the fans known too.
- 5:38Speaker 1: An ongoing discussion. I apologize for cutting you off, baby, Fine,
- 5:43Speaker 1: you probably shouldn't. I think that it was excellent, and
- 5:46Speaker 1: I think that that's spoken on behalf of yourself. But
- 5:50Speaker 1: I think so many that when don't we do our
- 5:53Speaker 1: fan questions and when I see the YouTube comments and
- 5:56Speaker 1: we see the tweets and everything else, there's despite Monday
- 6:00Speaker 1: Nights win, the comments are just not you can tell that.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I think they've lost a lot of at least the
- 6:09Speaker 1: casual fans and maybe a lot of the diehard fans too,
- 6:12Speaker 1: are just at the point where rock Bottom. I'm not
- 6:17Speaker 1: sure if you said it now, but I know that
- 6:19Speaker 1: that term has been thrown around a lot. They think
- 6:21Speaker 1: that this is about the lowest point this franchise has
- 6:25Speaker 1: ever gotten to.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Well, yeah, like I said, last time, I used to
- 6:30Speaker 3: see the Cowboy. He came to every game. I think
- 6:32Speaker 3: Alreadie might be an absentee owner. Okay, I think he
- 6:35Speaker 3: lives in Scottsdale. I'm sure he has a place in
- 6:38Speaker 3: southern California. But look, they're not getting it done. It
- 6:43Speaker 3: is rock bottom and it's really hard. But let me
- 6:46Speaker 3: make some point because the PR department, private the private
- 6:49Speaker 3: relations department thinks that maybe we just are miserable people
- 6:53Speaker 3: or maybe piring things that I want to love. On
- 6:57Speaker 3: the Angels, there's nothing. I mean, I was in the
- 7:00Speaker 3: stands too many times when they were winning. But I've
- 7:04Speaker 3: also I mean, I'm being critical. It's tough love. It's
- 7:08Speaker 3: not being a jerk. It's really saying, okay, stop telling
- 7:12Speaker 3: me things that aren't true or disingenuine. Because my eyes
- 7:17Speaker 3: are pretty experienced watching baseball, I.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Would I can't.
- 7:22Speaker 1: They are your baseball accuse very high, and you have
- 7:25Speaker 1: strong opinions, but I tend to agree with with most
- 7:29Speaker 1: of them, not all of them.
- 7:30Speaker 2: We'll talk about the other things that we agree.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Have you ever read What Mark? Have you ever won
- 7:36Speaker 3: an argument with me.
- 7:39Speaker 1: At least in my mind once or twice in yours.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I'm sure you're undefeated. We're going to take a quick
- 7:44Speaker 1: break here, a word from our sponsors, and then get
- 7:47Speaker 1: back to some more Halo news. We love our dog Fella,
- 7:50Speaker 1: who splays out in the open sun on our floor
- 7:53Speaker 1: like she's an underwear model, and that's why we love
- 7:56Speaker 1: her so much. To scratch her belly's.

- 8:51Speaker 2: Do you think they ensure possums?
- 8:54Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah, you know, come on, we got postage stadium.
- 8:59Speaker 3: That's rock bomb. That's it again? Would I never believe,
- 9:02Speaker 3: But I'll tell you what. It gave already a great
- 9:04Speaker 3: chance to have the Possum Cookbook night. I hear that
- 9:08Speaker 3: it's the first twenty five thousand, get one, the next
- 9:11Speaker 3: ten thousand, get two.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Are you not wearing what looks like an Angel's giveaway?
- 9:18Speaker 1: Is that it an Angels giveaway Hawaiian shirt?
- 9:20Speaker 3: Or where did you get that rain spooner one hundred
- 9:24Speaker 3: and ten dollars? Oh?
- 9:26Speaker 2: Sorry, my bad?
- 9:28Speaker 3: Yeah all right, yeah you don't so.
- 9:31Speaker 1: The trucker had? Is that on your wish list? I'm
- 9:35Speaker 1: looking forward. I don't have plans to go, but maybe
- 9:38Speaker 1: on the second hand market. It looks it looks pretty cool.
- 9:42Speaker 1: It's the talk of the town. Or I don't know
- 9:44Speaker 1: what Roger said, but it was something like that. They
- 9:46Speaker 1: got a Cacuchi bobblehead coming up. The giveaways are still
- 9:50Speaker 1: a very big thing, but I think that they're they're
- 9:55Speaker 1: not doing it for you if they ever did.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Okay, Mark, here's the pro. The one thing that I
- 10:01Speaker 3: learned from Roger Lodge is I think that the season's
- 10:04Speaker 3: going to start the night they give the Kukuchi bobblehead job.
- 10:09Speaker 3: So now this is just advanced spring training because the
- 10:12Speaker 3: season's going to start. Oh wait, he said that, He
- 10:16Speaker 3: said that a month ago.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I'm going to show you something the courtesy of Jeff Fletcher.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Zach Netto's comments post game Monday night talking about his
- 10:28Speaker 1: approach and it's something I've been working on since my
- 10:31Speaker 1: slump was over, just trying to use the whole field,
- 10:34Speaker 1: just shifting my eyes from that left field bullpen kind
- 10:37Speaker 1: of towards the middle of the field. Netto said, what
- 10:41Speaker 1: do you think when you see that comment right there
- 10:45Speaker 1: about the approach that zach Netto and maybe the rest
- 10:49Speaker 1: of the offense has as a whole.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Well, do you think maybe one of the coaching staff
- 10:58Speaker 3: that would say, hey, maybe you can look at center field.
- 11:03Speaker 3: I know you said it, but I don't know that
- 11:05Speaker 3: Jack listens to the show or watches the show. Look,
- 11:08Speaker 3: I gotta make sure you understand that Zach Nettle is
- 11:10Speaker 3: my favorite angel has been. I think that that guy
- 11:14Speaker 3: was ready for ready for some serious therapy. Was he
- 11:20Speaker 3: was really wearing it hard. So I'm glad he thinks
- 11:22Speaker 3: he slumps over. It's really it's really important to have
- 11:27Speaker 3: Zach Nettle playing well for us, and I'd like the
- 11:30Speaker 3: defensive slump to be over because last night he ball
- 11:34Speaker 3: bounced off his fingers. He was wasn't looking, and that
- 11:37Speaker 3: can happen, but it's happened more times than not with him.
- 11:42Speaker 1: After some harsh air quotes criticism from Bobby Valentine, Young
- 11:49Speaker 1: Zach said he he actually agreed with what Bobby said.
- 11:53Speaker 1: He does need to clean some stuff up. I think
- 11:56Speaker 1: that some of his comments Monday night, I believe via
- 12:01Speaker 1: text or so you said, there were a lot of
- 12:02Speaker 1: me comments in there.
- 12:05Speaker 3: No, there's a lot of a lot of eyes. And
- 12:07Speaker 3: I read another one where he says he's I thought
- 12:10Speaker 3: I was reading Reggie Jackson's story that he was the
- 12:12Speaker 3: straw that's threw the drink. He says, Ben the spark
- 12:15Speaker 3: plug on this team. There's certain things act I'm going
- 12:18Speaker 3: to tell you and I've mentored golfers, I've been a
- 12:21Speaker 3: guitar players I've met are barbecuers, And those are the
- 12:25Speaker 3: things other people need to say you don't say about yourself.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I think I wanted to ask about one thing in
- 12:33Speaker 1: specific that you may be able to touch upon. So
- 12:35Speaker 1: the team's record is not good seventeen and thirty one
- 12:39Speaker 1: as we were recording this prior to Tuesday's game. Let's
- 12:44Speaker 1: say that this kind of continues, this cold stretch of
- 12:46Speaker 1: the air quotes. And we've talked about the lack of hustle.
- 12:53Speaker 1: We've talked about a number of things, but your entire
- 12:57Speaker 1: life has been in the music industry, uh, by and large.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And I wanted to ask about musicians that may not
- 13:06Speaker 1: be playing maybe the venues that they would like to play,
- 13:11Speaker 1: or not as popular as they once were, or what
- 13:16Speaker 1: and just just the importance of maintaining a level of
- 13:19Speaker 1: professionalism when the going gets tough. And do you have
- 13:23Speaker 1: any thoughts on that topic that you might be able
- 13:25Speaker 1: to share.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I've got a lot of them. Uh. You know,
- 13:30Speaker 3: we've been fortunate. You know, if you look in the
- 13:32Speaker 3: back of the Hurdie ball string packages, which would my
- 13:35Speaker 3: and my family do. My sons Brian and Scott here
- 13:39Speaker 3: are very involved now. But we have everybody from Merrick
- 13:41Speaker 3: Clapton to you know, disturbed. It's it's the most amazing roster.
- 13:47Speaker 3: But I'll tell you the one difference they have is
- 13:49Speaker 3: in music, it's subjective. In sports, there's a there's banning average,
- 13:53Speaker 3: there's a thousand statistics that can quantify you whether you're
- 13:57Speaker 3: good or not. Thank Gosh for that. If you're a
- 14:00Speaker 3: baseball player, for a musician, the rug could be pulled
- 14:03Speaker 3: out of you just because one morning people decided that
- 14:07Speaker 3: they didn't like you anymore. But I think one of
- 14:10Speaker 3: the things is you've always got to respect your fans,
- 14:13Speaker 3: and you've got to respect your fans when you sell tickets.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I think you've got to play as hard as you
- 14:20Speaker 3: can every time. If you're playing a bar that you
- 14:23Speaker 3: don't think you should be playing, you need to play
- 14:26Speaker 3: like you're at the Royal Arbert Hall because you had
- 14:28Speaker 3: never know who's in the crowd. The thing with baseball,
- 14:31Speaker 3: you need to play hard when it all comes down,
- 14:34Speaker 3: if you played hard, I mean, look, we didn't think
- 14:37Speaker 3: we're going to win that game last night, Monday night.
- 14:39Speaker 3: In the what was ended up being a two hitter
- 14:42Speaker 3: with NNA. But you stay in the game, and you
- 14:45Speaker 3: stay trying hard, and you stay giving your best, you
- 14:48Speaker 3: stay being professional, good things will happen.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Let's stay on the good thing. I'm tired of the bad.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Let's talk about the good. Walbert. You reina, this guy
- 14:57Speaker 1: is getting it done. This guy looks looks you would
- 15:01Speaker 1: not know he was so relatively inexperienced major league wise.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I mean, he is a cool customer out there. He's
- 15:08Speaker 2: got an elite change up.
- 15:10Speaker 1: It graded out well, well above average actually in order
- 15:13Speaker 1: has changed up. And then his sweeper, according to the
- 15:16Speaker 1: advanced analytics, is a set, and I think his sweeper
- 15:19Speaker 1: is something he should use more and will use more.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Your thoughts on Walbert Monday night navigating some tricky situations
- 15:28Speaker 1: too where his defense didn't quite pick him up, but
- 15:31Speaker 1: he got out of it and gave him a tremendous outing.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Because you know what, you can talk about all the stats.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I think he's got a heart, like he's a fierce competitor,
- 15:41Speaker 3: he's playing way beyond his years, okay, and he's got
- 15:45Speaker 3: natural ability. But you know, a young picture like that, well,
- 15:49Speaker 3: like we saw the other day when there were some
- 15:51Speaker 3: errors be gone Kohanovitch where he kind of lost his
- 15:56Speaker 3: trade of thought. I watched Arena, I mean monccotomy in
- 16:00Speaker 3: a really lazy play and thought he had the catcher
- 16:04Speaker 3: didn't have to throw very hard. It happens to be
- 16:06Speaker 3: one of the speediest catchers in baseball. I know that
- 16:09Speaker 3: the guy beat it out. Now a lot of young
- 16:12Speaker 3: pitchers would really would let that get to them. I
- 16:15Speaker 3: think what people don't talk about the kid seems tough
- 16:19Speaker 3: besides being talented.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I agree with you, and he is a bright spot.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Jose Soriano. Another bright spot rankings came out today. You
- 16:28Speaker 1: know sars on the Athletic I was seeing that Soriano
- 16:32Speaker 1: again ranked pretty low for what he's done.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I think he was almost twenty fifth.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I don't have it in front of me, but part
- 16:38Speaker 1: of the rationale was they think he's going to there
- 16:43Speaker 1: will be some natural regression in the whip walks to
- 16:45Speaker 1: hit standings pitched, and they cited the defense behind him
- 16:50Speaker 1: as something that will probably hold him back as the
- 16:54Speaker 1: season moves forward, So they are not too high on
- 16:57Speaker 1: the Angels defense. Do you see it differently? Do you
- 17:00Speaker 1: think the Angels defense is better than you know, the
- 17:04Speaker 1: type that would maybe hinder a pitcher's uh stats and
- 17:08Speaker 1: ability to win something like a Cy Young.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you have to realize that we've been We've
- 17:15Speaker 3: watched the Angels three and Simmons, a lot of great players,
- 17:19Speaker 3: you know, Torry Hunter, Mike Trout and his thing, even
- 17:22Speaker 3: Cole Calhoun. Uh, we've had some guys that played hard
- 17:27Speaker 3: and played it, just played really well. And uh, I
- 17:32Speaker 3: want to see that more of that. And I think
- 17:34Speaker 3: defense wins games. And it goes up the old saying
- 17:36Speaker 3: up the middle. You know, centerfielder, your your infielders, your catcher,
- 17:42Speaker 3: and uh, I think our catcher we all know, has
- 17:45Speaker 3: had a lot of issues, a lot of problems, and uh,
- 17:49Speaker 3: you know, I just think we I think if you
- 17:51Speaker 3: focused on defense, you got a better chance of winning
- 17:53Speaker 3: the game.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I think you're right, especially up the middle. One topic,
- 17:58Speaker 1: and you've said it to me a few times. It's
- 18:00Speaker 1: not throwing you under the bus, but you have Do
- 18:02Speaker 1: you think that our outfielders are playing a little.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Deep this flipper of a blowhole.
- 18:09Speaker 2: I'll take that as a yes.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Yes, it's a yes, I think. Okay, but let me
- 18:15Speaker 3: tell you something. It's that they're deep. You notice there's
- 18:19Speaker 3: not a lot of plays at home. There's not a
- 18:20Speaker 3: lot of plays at third. They're pretty deep, okay, and
- 18:25Speaker 3: you know, I know the thing is you don't want
- 18:27Speaker 3: to ball hit over your head, but I also like
- 18:31Speaker 3: getting those if you don't catch a single, getting on
- 18:33Speaker 3: a hop, charging and being aggressive, I think it's almost
- 18:38Speaker 3: I would prefer to see a more aggressive outfielder outfield.
- 18:42Speaker 3: I like tidocio there if they didn't. I think that
- 18:47Speaker 3: that Adell is a competent a right fielder, and I
- 18:50Speaker 3: think Mark I think that Mike Trout is still really good,
- 18:53Speaker 3: but I think he needs some days off.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I know on the broadcast one day, Wayne said Trout
- 18:59Speaker 1: was putting on the defensive clinic on maybe the play
- 19:03Speaker 1: became a little harder because he was starting out deeper.
- 19:06Speaker 1: It looked like a rather ordinary play for a center fielder.
- 19:10Speaker 1: But maybe there's at times not enough highlights, so you
- 19:14Speaker 1: have to kind of create some of your own. And
- 19:18Speaker 1: I think at times for an ex player that can
- 19:21Speaker 1: be a little confusing, but there there are.
- 19:24Speaker 2: We'll go ahead, let me see this.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I'm not bagging on Mike Trub. Mike Trout is wonderful.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Mike Trouse represented the Angels really well Mike Trout. I mean,
- 19:36Speaker 3: I'm just saying to me, it seems like they play deep.
- 19:38Speaker 3: But I'm not bagging on Trott. I like Trout a lot.
- 19:41Speaker 3: I think he's cold, and I think right now, and
- 19:44Speaker 3: I really think that he wants to play every day
- 19:46Speaker 3: like he's twenty seven, and I want to see a
- 19:48Speaker 3: manager is no, you're not playing today because we want
- 19:53Speaker 3: you playing in August, in September, and I think that.
- 19:58Speaker 3: I mean, look, oh, happy, fracture his hand and he's
- 20:00Speaker 3: back in five days bragging about it and he's playing.
- 20:03Speaker 3: And I thought he thought he was dead right away.
- 20:06Speaker 3: But also, you got a guy. Let me just see this.
- 20:09Speaker 3: There's a regression going on there that's pretty serious. And
- 20:12Speaker 3: I don't think it's necessarily his fault. I think how
- 20:14Speaker 3: he's been handled, but his ops. When we got him
- 20:17Speaker 3: with six sixty one, then up to seven ninety six,
- 20:20Speaker 3: that's elite catcher seven to twelve, and then the six
- 20:24Speaker 3: twenty nine last year. This year is five twenty eight,
- 20:29Speaker 3: and he plays every game. He fractures his hand and
- 20:31Speaker 3: only sits out five games. You know, that's wonderful. You're
- 20:34Speaker 3: a real tough guy. But it's not helping the team.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I think you're right. I think it playing through injury
- 20:41Speaker 1: is a very tough deal. I know I tried to
- 20:44Speaker 1: do it a couple times, but generally what happens is,
- 20:48Speaker 1: at least for a while, the stats only go one way,
- 20:51Speaker 1: and it's not the good way. And it can be
- 20:53Speaker 1: very tough to dig yourself out and try and have
- 20:56Speaker 1: a respectable season. If you get enough of bats under
- 20:58Speaker 1: your belt that you know you're not producing, the overall
- 21:03Speaker 1: line you know, starts to and then the pressure builds.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And we've talked about many times, he's the guy that
- 21:08Speaker 1: does not need any more pressure applied to him.
- 21:11Speaker 2: So I hope that the hand is maybe better than
- 21:14Speaker 2: we think. I hope it doesn't bother him swinging the.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Bat, because you know, a lot of his value is
- 21:19Speaker 1: tied to his offense, most of it, and they're counting
- 21:23Speaker 1: on him to be a guy you know that brings
- 21:26Speaker 1: a big power bat. I know when that trade was made,
- 21:30Speaker 1: you seem to think maybe at the time that we
- 21:33Speaker 1: we just not only one but one handedly, if you
- 21:37Speaker 1: want to say, winning and losing in a trade. But
- 21:40Speaker 1: you know, Brandon marsh over there with the Phillies he's
- 21:42Speaker 1: doing all right this year, say the least Mark.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I'm gonna ask you a tough question, who has a
- 21:49Speaker 3: better organization the Phillies of the Angels.
- 21:53Speaker 1: The Phillies weren't looking very good until they were took
- 21:56Speaker 1: a managerial fire for them. But they are now lighting up.
- 21:59Speaker 1: And I think Schwarber just hit his forty eight home run.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Uh probably as we were brushing our teeth in the morning.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I mean, they they they're now doing what they're doing,
- 22:10Speaker 1: and that's.
- 22:11Speaker 2: What it looks like.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I mean, they're they're expected to do that though, So
- 22:14Speaker 1: I think that that you know, there that is pressure.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Do you want to talk about a market where there's pressure?
- 22:19Speaker 1: Philadelphia has pressure. I think you know here in for
- 22:23Speaker 1: the scrappy Los Angeles Angels, as d G said, we're
- 22:27Speaker 1: called them. You know, you got one beat writer covering him,
- 22:30Speaker 1: and I know that you know, Zach and some of
- 22:32Speaker 1: us touch upon his comments briefly again, but you know,
- 22:35Speaker 1: they're all together as a unit. They're hanging, they're sticking tough.
- 22:38Speaker 1: They're the narratives you know, aren't bothering them and all this.
- 22:41Speaker 1: But there's really not a lot of the I mean,
- 22:43Speaker 1: there's no pressure on this ball club. So I think
- 22:45Speaker 1: that in terms of that, maybe that's not a great thing,
- 22:49Speaker 1: though maybe there should be more.
- 22:53Speaker 3: What mark they they First of all, there's pride there,
- 22:57Speaker 3: but I think what we're going to get into is
- 22:59Speaker 3: that the seed is not going to get better, okay,
- 23:05Speaker 3: especially when you don't play the right lineup and you
- 23:08Speaker 3: play guys with four hundred ops with five hundred ops
- 23:11Speaker 3: when you have uh, like, I think that one thing
- 23:15Speaker 3: Netto's been missing is a reliable double play partner. I
- 23:19Speaker 3: think Fraser is fine, our closer. But hey, by the way,
- 23:23Speaker 3: is Fraser going to get some of those rules that
- 23:25Speaker 3: o TOI gets now that he's a two way player,
- 23:29Speaker 3: Maybe a little longer to warm him up.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Three he plays defense?
- 23:35Speaker 3: Is yeah okay? Good? Yeah, yeah, maybe he should get.
- 23:38Speaker 2: To I I know that.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Yeah, our closer, Fraser, but uh who knows the rules?
- 23:46Speaker 1: A lot of interest obviously with Showy. But there's only
- 23:50Speaker 1: one of Showy.
- 23:51Speaker 3: And uh, you know, maybe we we fixed we fixed him.
- 23:58Speaker 3: You know, we're the great the Lynxer. If you're struggling
- 24:02Speaker 3: just to have a nice three game system series with
- 24:05Speaker 3: the Angels, it'll be fine.
- 24:08Speaker 2: That's that's that's tough to hear, but it is the truth.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Well, last topic I kind of wanted to get into,
- 24:14Speaker 1: and with Netto talking about pulling the ball. You and
- 24:18Speaker 1: I usually see hitting the same way. We like a
- 24:23Speaker 1: certain brand of baseball. We may have talked about it
- 24:26Speaker 1: a little previously. But the Brewers do it, the Rays
- 24:29Speaker 1: do it, the Guardians do it, the Cubs do it,
- 24:32Speaker 1: taking all types of hits, taking their singles. Even the
- 24:36Speaker 1: Dodgers were doing it, and unfortunately the Angels seem very
- 24:40Speaker 1: very stuck. The right handed hitters in particular are having
- 24:44Speaker 1: a very tough time on pitches down in a way Joe, Adell,
- 24:48Speaker 1: Jorge and well, Zach Netto, even Trouty, it seemed. Does
- 24:53Speaker 1: this team look pole happy to you?
- 24:57Speaker 3: Well, I can't use the flipper joke again, but yes,
- 25:00Speaker 3: absolutely in it. Look at I really enjoyed watching Toronto
- 25:05Speaker 3: last year. I enjoy all the players that use the
- 25:08Speaker 3: whole field, that make you defend them, you know, that
- 25:12Speaker 3: make you defend the whole field. I like that. I
- 25:15Speaker 3: think it's more I wouldn't mind seeing a guy choke
- 25:18Speaker 3: up every once in a while with two strikes instead
- 25:20Speaker 3: of corkscrewing himself into the ground. Trying to hit a
- 25:23Speaker 3: ball eighteen inches off the plate.
- 25:26Speaker 1: I think that that's choking up. Might be something that
- 25:30Speaker 1: is not mentioned anymore. I'm not certain too.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Did you ever choke up?
- 25:35Speaker 1: Did you ever choke up strikes? I've done it since
- 25:37Speaker 1: I was since I grabbed a bat.
- 25:39Speaker 2: That was all that was.
- 25:40Speaker 1: That's what you did, and that's what I did. Now
- 25:43Speaker 1: it wasn't some enormous amount, but it was a physical
- 25:48Speaker 1: adjustment that also there was a mental component too. You
- 25:52Speaker 1: have two strikes on you now, it's no longer time.
- 25:55Speaker 1: And to be honest with you, I was always more
- 25:58Speaker 1: or less taught to stay the middle towards right center.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I had no point in my career except against certain pitchers,
- 26:06Speaker 1: and there were a feel like Bumgardner was one of them.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I realized, you have got to pull him because of
- 26:11Speaker 1: the way he throws, because of the angle that it's
- 26:13Speaker 1: coming in. You're not gonna have any success trying to
- 26:16Speaker 1: take him to right center field. So there were probably
- 26:19Speaker 1: a handful of pitchers that I did actively look to
- 26:21Speaker 1: pull the baseball against, but that was very limited. And
- 26:25Speaker 1: now I see an offense that it seems like the
- 26:29Speaker 1: stock approach is to pull the baseball into the Maybe
- 26:33Speaker 1: the bullpens, I mean Neto's own quote, that's where he's
- 26:36Speaker 1: setting his sights. Now, maybe it's changed a bit too,
- 26:38Speaker 1: and that maybe the influence of the hitting coaches getting
- 26:41Speaker 1: through a little bit. I haven't seen Zach rely credit
- 26:44Speaker 1: any of the hitting coaches yet, but I know that,
- 26:48Speaker 1: you know, they said that everyone's work in the cage
- 26:50Speaker 1: has been outstanding and the best baseball is yet to come.
- 26:54Speaker 1: The general manager himself said that skepticism abounds with the
- 27:00Speaker 1: on that one.
- 27:01Speaker 3: But yeah, but and Mark Wayne says that that Trump
- 27:05Speaker 3: makes some nice planes, says, you're putting an outfield clinic.
- 27:08Speaker 3: But look, I love Gooby a lot, really love him.
- 27:11Speaker 3: But I wonder he's got to get there in pregame
- 27:14Speaker 3: and and try and make chicken soup out of this team.
- 27:18Speaker 3: And now they're in in the uh in the booth,
- 27:21Speaker 3: I turned the sound off. They're laughing at the time
- 27:23Speaker 3: about screezing. But I don't blame them. You imagine covering
- 27:28Speaker 3: this team for one hundred and sixty two games and
- 27:31Speaker 3: they were like a quarter the way into it, and
- 27:32Speaker 3: I'm sure they're looking at each other going oh my.
- 27:35Speaker 3: And then we have a very restrictive and punitive media staff.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Let me let me end the show.
- 27:43Speaker 2: For you, please.
- 27:46Speaker 3: I think that the players would really prefer to see
- 27:51Speaker 3: the band aid ripped off, not just with the players,
- 27:57Speaker 3: with the development staff, with the coaching staff. We've had
- 28:01Speaker 3: some great scouts over the years, and I think that
- 28:06Speaker 3: you could trade all these people, but if you put
- 28:07Speaker 3: them back in the same system, you're gonna end up
- 28:12Speaker 3: getting the same thing. You're expecting a different result. It's
- 28:15Speaker 3: not gonna happen. But I will say something. Every one
- 28:18Speaker 3: of the Angels minor league teams started out a little rough.
- 28:21Speaker 3: They're right there at around five hundred and uh. You know,
- 28:25Speaker 3: the worst team in the Angel organization is the major
- 28:28Speaker 3: league team by a mile. So Perry did draft well,
- 28:32Speaker 3: I think, and I think we have some great players,
- 28:34Speaker 3: but I would I don't want to watch Moncotta lazily
- 28:39Speaker 3: throw or lazy run anymore. I want to see Gooseman.
- 28:42Speaker 3: I want to see people that want to be there
- 28:43Speaker 3: and want to make a name for themselves. But I
- 28:46Speaker 3: want I want an organization and a structure and a plan,
- 28:51Speaker 3: you know, the Cardinal's way that dodge. You think about
- 28:54Speaker 3: all the different great teams that had philosophy as the age,
- 28:57Speaker 3: like I said, last thing as okay, it's filled the
- 29:02Speaker 3: dreams and hope, and then it's being disingenuine in the
- 29:06Speaker 3: postgame comments. You know, it's just I don't even watch
- 29:12Speaker 3: that anymore. Suzuki's given the most basic little league responses.
- 29:17Speaker 3: And when Perry does talk to you, I would love
- 29:21Speaker 3: to be at a Perry press conference. I wish I
- 29:23Speaker 3: wish I could ask him some questions, and I just
- 29:26Speaker 3: wish he could respond when he was disrespectful to the
- 29:29Speaker 3: person that's asking the question.
- 29:32Speaker 1: I don't think this is easy for anybody that works
- 29:34Speaker 1: for the ball club right now, and it never is
- 29:37Speaker 1: when the team is scuffling this bad.
- 29:39Speaker 2: But if they're not going.
- 29:40Speaker 1: To lean into a rebuild, then this could be a
- 29:43Speaker 1: season that, like we said, rock bottom, and I think
- 29:48Speaker 1: it's going to take a lot of good play on
- 29:50Speaker 1: the field to win the fans back that.
- 29:56Speaker 2: I don't know. I think a lot of them might
- 29:57Speaker 2: be rooting for the team to lose.
- 30:00Speaker 1: At one point that would have been completely out of bounds,
- 30:04Speaker 1: but it just has gotten to the point it's expected.
- 30:08Speaker 1: The Dodgers came in, they took care of business. Maybe
- 30:11Speaker 1: maybe a Monday Night's game is the start of a
- 30:14Speaker 1: legitimate resurgence. It's gonna start with the pitching and the defense.
- 30:18Speaker 1: So you can't just get it done counting on guys
- 30:21Speaker 1: like Walbert and Soriano and Detmer's to pitch their five
- 30:25Speaker 1: or six innings. It's gonna take more than that, and
- 30:27Speaker 1: I'd like to see the offense pick it up. Singles
- 30:31Speaker 1: are still very cool. There's nothing that's uncool about a
- 30:34Speaker 1: hit in the major leagues. Singles, doubles, taking the extra base,
- 30:39Speaker 1: running hard to first base, all of you. Those are
- 30:43Speaker 1: the things that I think. It starts somewhere, and it
- 30:45Speaker 1: starts there, and you know what I do hope they
- 30:49Speaker 1: start to play better and these guys perform, even though
- 30:52Speaker 1: this may not be the ideal situation. Like you said
- 30:55Speaker 1: with the musicians earlier, you gotta pour your heart out,
- 30:58Speaker 1: You got to put your best effort for you're you
- 31:00Speaker 1: are a performer. You're an athlete, but a performer, and
- 31:03Speaker 1: these are the things that matter. So I think we're
- 31:05Speaker 1: gonna wrap the show, Sterling Ball. Thank you for your
- 31:08Speaker 1: contributions today. Do you have one last thing?
- 31:13Speaker 3: Yeah, remember Nats cats possums. I wish bats were in there.
- 31:22Speaker 2: They might be Wood. Maybe they're coming tonight.
- 31:27Speaker 3: All right, thank you so much. I hope, I hope
- 31:30Speaker 3: to come back.
- 31:32Speaker 1: We'll see about that, no problem. Thank you for watching
- 31:35Speaker 1: Halo Territory. We'll see you next time.
- 31:39Speaker 3: Thank you.
