The Griots of Mali: Keepers of Mansa Musa's Story
In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the oral historians of the Mali Empire, the jeliw, who preserved the stories of Mansa Musa and Sundiata Keita for centuries. They discuss the training of griots, their role in courts, and the delicate balance between history and performance. The episode touches on the Kouroukan Fouga, the epic of Sundiata, and the griots' modern legacy in West Africa, offering a fresh perspective on how we know what we know about Mali's golden age.
