- 0:28Hey, everybody. Good morning.
- 0:29From the chicken coop. Today, we're going to assume
- 0:33that you would like to know what your first step is if you were
- 0:36starting a business, like let's just say you were starting a
- 0:42well, not even a business, just a project.
- 0:44Let's just take it that way, OK. I've had this question quite a
- 0:47bit lately and I think it's coming up from just people are
- 0:50getting a little bored. They want to do something
- 0:52different. And so they're asking questions
- 0:54that lead you down the road. So had quite a few people ask,
- 0:58well, you know, I want, I have an idea for something I want to
- 1:02do and I'm ready to jump in. And so I said to them, what is,
- 1:08what do you think your first step is?
- 1:10And inevitably it's always, well, you know, I've got to
- 1:15either secure funding or I've got to write my business plan.
- 1:18And while that may seem very logical to most people to say
- 1:22something like that, could it be, yes, it could be that that
- 1:26is one of the first steps that you have to do.
- 1:29But there is a more critical step that at least from my
- 1:32perspective of keeping you going long term, which is essentially
- 1:36what we're doing. We're trying to keep you going
- 1:38long term. We're saying, OK, you know, if
- 1:41you're going to do this, you're going to be doing it for quite
- 1:43some time. So you know, you want to make
- 1:47sure that there's 100% knowledge about the, the everything you
- 1:53need to know. So what's that first thing?
- 1:56And the quintessential question is if you have this I, you know,
- 2:03idea and you want to run with it or this business you want to run
- 2:06with it. You need to know for sure that
- 2:09you're going to be committed. When it gets hard, when it gets
- 2:12complicated, when you don't know what you don't know.
- 2:17And that's the crazy part about having a business.
- 2:20That's the crazy part about, you know, doing whatever it is that
- 2:24inspires you and wants to keep you going.
- 2:27You got to know that you're willing to keep going.
- 2:30When you run into what you don't know.
- 2:33I'll tell you, when I first started coaching, I did not
- 2:37understand lots of aspects seemed pretty straightforward,
- 2:41seemed pretty simple and it's it's just not I didn't
- 2:45understand the level at which you constantly have to grow
- 2:48yourself in order to be a world class coach.
- 2:52You have to grow every single day.
- 2:55You have to be learning, you have to be expanding.
- 2:57You have to be preparing for what you need and you how your
- 3:00clients are going to show up because you just don't know the
- 3:04level of different things that they're going to bring to the
- 3:06table and expect you to be able to help them with.
- 3:09And I'll tell you that pushes me in a great way.
- 3:15But because I knew up front, somebody said to me, well, you
- 3:21know, you got to have your business plan.
- 3:23You got to have this, you got to have all.
- 3:24I knew all the the digital stuff, but I didn't know that
- 3:28and I hadn't incorporated that into my regular life about it.
- 3:32So once I got to a certain point where I wanted these, this
- 3:38business to grow and these people to be able to grow and do
- 3:41it, I just had to, OK, I have to throw myself into this and I
- 3:44have to make learning part of my everyday regimen.
- 3:48I just have to do it constantly. There are always books.
- 3:51There are always things to learn.
- 3:52Now that made me seem simple. But when you're running a
- 3:55business and you're coaching, you know, 12 hours a day, four
- 4:00days a week, and you are running a farm and having a family,
- 4:04that's a lot to incorporate and to constantly be able to learn
- 4:08and grow. So you have to, you know, figure
- 4:10out how to use your net time, do certain things that are.
- 4:13And by net time I mean time when you're not do.
- 4:16When you're doing one thing, like for instance, if I'm weed
- 4:18whacking, I have a headset on and I'm listening to books.
- 4:22If I'm in the car, I'm listening to books.
- 4:26I use my net time a lot to make sure that I can use that and
- 4:31make it work the best for me. But if you don't know in the
- 4:35beginning, the most important thing is your level of
- 4:39commitment to it when it gets tough and committing to the fact
- 4:43that you don't know what you don't know right now.
- 4:45Like whatever you're thinking of doing, whatever project you're
- 4:47thinking of doing, you just don't know what you're going to
- 4:50run into. You have no idea.
- 4:52Years ago, I decided I wanted to learn how to do watercolor on
- 4:57Chinese watercolor paper. No one told me at that point
- 5:00point in time how difficult Chinese watercolor paper was to
- 5:03work with. May seem like a silly, screwy
- 5:06example, but it's like painting on toilet paper.
- 5:09And I made this decision that I wanted to learn this.
- 5:12And then I kept running into the fact that I kept sticking my
- 5:14brush right through the paper and it was really annoying.
- 5:17It was really annoying and I got frustrated and I walked away
- 5:20from it multiple times and it pissed me off that I couldn't
- 5:23get it. And the thing was, I was really
- 5:27committed to knowing how to do it, and I had to learn a lighter
- 5:30hand. I had to learn easy light
- 5:33fingers, easy fingers. But I had been so used to
- 5:36painting with acrylics, I didn't understand the difference And my
- 5:40hands, my muscle memory had to change.
- 5:42But what I was organically doing and didn't realize, because I'm
- 5:46so freaking stubborn, I wouldn't quit.
- 5:49I didn't give up. But not everybody's in that
- 5:52headspace, not everybody's as stubborn as I am.
- 5:55So the reason I'm bringing this up is you should go and do and
- 5:59create and be whatever you want. But you have to ask yourself the
- 6:04really important question first. Am I committed to this?
- 6:08When it gets hard, And if the answer is yes, then you say, OK,
- 6:12what does hard look like? What are the things I can find
- 6:16out from people so that I can write them down and say, OK,
- 6:20these are potential stumbling blocks and go to someone that
- 6:23will be real about it with you. And once you know that, then you
- 6:27say, am I going to be able to traverse these things and really
- 6:32be able to say and commit to myself that Yup, I heard this,
- 6:36Yup, I made a commitment. And I really strongly suggest
- 6:39that if you're going to do whatever it is that you're going
- 6:41to do, you write yourself a note or you do a self yourself, a
- 6:44recording and you keep it in your phone and your voice memos
- 6:47where it says when it gets hard, listen to this.
- 6:51And so you can listen to yourself when you're in a better
- 6:53state and you've made that decision that says, hey, yeah,
- 6:57I'm. I'm willing to do it because
- 6:58often times I will get that. I'll be honest with you guys.
- 7:01I will get that. I will get the just yes, yes,
- 7:03yes. And that's cool.
- 7:04I'm no problem with that. But you better make sure if you
- 7:07say that to me, I'm going to come back at everybody who does
- 7:11it and say, well, you did say yes.
- 7:13And it's hard when you get that reminder, but you can do that
- 7:16for yourself. So I'm going to challenge you to
- 7:19think about this, OK? Are you willing to do what it's
- 7:23what it takes when it gets hard? And know that first before you
- 7:28do your business plan, before you do everything, know that
- 7:31first because I promise you it will get hard.
- 7:35Everything does, right down to my garden, my chickens, growing
- 7:39flowers. Like those are the things that
- 7:41are the hardest. So I hope you guys have a very
- 7:45blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
