- 0:49Speaker 3: the Crack and trying to get back into the wind Callumn.
- 0:51Speaker 3: We'll talk with John Forsland in just a bit for
- 0:55Speaker 3: more on the state of the Krack and goaltending their
- 0:57Speaker 3: defense and a perceived offensive slump. How worried should we
- 1:02Speaker 3: be about this? John will provide some more insight coming
- 1:05Speaker 3: up on this in just a bit, as the Kraken
- 1:08Speaker 3: looked to go to and zero against Winnipeg this season,
- 1:11Speaker 3: though a pretty challenging test considering the Jets are right
- 1:14Speaker 3: now ten and six, coming off a four to two
- 1:17Speaker 3: victory over the Vancouver Canucks back on Tuesday. Well, the
- 1:21Speaker 3: crack and facing Columbus looking to get out to a
- 1:24Speaker 3: big start with a rookie Ford once again looking to
- 1:28Speaker 3: light the fuse offensively on the cracking side.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Now Larsen right side, back to the line, Chandler Steven said,
- 1:35Speaker 4: two strides and shoots get his own rebound, fires again
- 1:38Speaker 4: off the back skate a gossee fabreau. It'll bounce below
- 1:41Speaker 4: the goal line as Ted Greaves didn't know where it was,
- 1:45Speaker 4: cracket resetting bits done, couldn't pick it up. Here comes
- 1:48Speaker 4: mart Tenko down the right side.
- 1:50Speaker 5: Shoots off the crossbar. Oh my goodness, what chaos end
- 1:55Speaker 5: to end here?
- 1:57Speaker 6: Midway through period one? And now everly well at this
- 2:00Speaker 6: all to the goal.
- 2:01Speaker 4: And Jack Grees will glove it down. I fancilly over
- 2:05Speaker 4: an ear blue line.
- 2:08Speaker 7: Look back at the near.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Side CINERI passing front Mark tenko one play man Matt Murray.
- 2:14Speaker 6: Shuts it down. Oh what a fantastic pass from general
- 2:17Speaker 6: to the corner.
- 2:18Speaker 8: You got to that puck first and fired it up
- 2:20Speaker 8: to the front and Marchenko with just a quick ritch
- 2:22Speaker 8: shot on them.
- 2:23Speaker 6: Eight seven shots cracking laid there. Ben Myers gets most.
- 2:27Speaker 5: For Winter ten stop Winter is coming, Ryan.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Winter ten gets it started here in Seattle three seventeen
- 2:43Speaker 4: to play in the.
- 2:44Speaker 8: First one, nothing cracking. We just talked about how much
- 2:47Speaker 8: I like this fourth line combination. Right now, what into
- 2:50Speaker 8: the ace you get a big safe by Matt Murray.
- 2:52Speaker 6: The other end goes to Ford line. They go to work.
- 2:54Speaker 8: Ben Myers picking that fuck up top of the circles.
- 2:57Speaker 8: He's got a lead in the net like you did earlier.
- 2:59Speaker 8: He sells shot and at the last second backhand over
- 3:02Speaker 8: to widgeted one timer pass greaves one nuffing kracking.
- 3:06Speaker 6: Miche Evans for the high slot, hands it off to
- 3:08Speaker 6: them on tour white ling.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Blue line shot off the boats. Oh that had more much.
- 3:14Speaker 4: That was a knuckle pucket beat jet reeds.
- 3:18Speaker 6: Looked like it was gonna.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Flutter over the.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Glove, but it kicked the bar in Starrensky right side.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Fantillian from bumped on goal, knocked.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Down save Marteko Fan Telly shot.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Off the glove of Matt Murray and they score. Matt
- 3:34Speaker 4: Murray two more inches from a highlight reel SportsCenter same
- 3:42Speaker 4: it goes off the end of his glove and the
- 3:46Speaker 4: Jackets on the power play tie. The game had a
- 3:51Speaker 4: goal apiece. Marchhenko through center. He's got Fantilly. Fantilly gets
- 3:56Speaker 4: by backhand big same by Murray. He goes down and
- 4:03Speaker 4: stones fan Tilly's back and right hand.
- 4:06Speaker 6: It's Charlie Coyle. He waits for the signal. Coil picks
- 4:10Speaker 6: up the pucket. He'll bring it near side.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Coil into the circle, back to the Hashbargs low slot
- 4:16Speaker 4: shot off the bar. He scores and the Columbus Blue
- 4:21Speaker 4: Jackets take the extra point in the shootout final two
- 4:26Speaker 4: to one.
- 4:27Speaker 3: So a tough way for that to end in a
- 4:29Speaker 3: two to one Kraken shootout loss to Columbus out shot.
- 4:32Speaker 2: By the way thirty four to twenty three, which gives.
- 4:35Speaker 3: You the indication of how good Matt Murray was in
- 4:38Speaker 3: that game. He's still looking for his first career win
- 4:41Speaker 3: with the Kraken. But played well enough to get it
- 4:44Speaker 3: thirty three saves on thirty four shots he had and
- 4:47Speaker 3: providing more answers as far as goaltending depth in behind
- 4:51Speaker 3: Joey Decord, who was still sidelined. Nonetheless, the Kraken unable
- 4:56Speaker 3: to cash in on two power play opportunities and generating
- 4:59Speaker 3: just fun five shansn nets in period three to one,
- 5:03Speaker 3: as well in sudden depth over time John Fororzland coming
- 5:07Speaker 3: up in just a bit before that. The Cracket holding
- 5:10Speaker 3: an optional practice on Wednesday at crack In Community ice Plex,
- 5:13Speaker 3: and head coach Lane Lambert spoke with the media afterward
- 5:17Speaker 3: with more on his views with the Krackt offense and
- 5:20Speaker 3: their direction heading into this Thursday's matchup.
- 5:24Speaker 7: So last night after the game, you were talking a
- 5:26Speaker 7: bit about, you know, the chances that you guys did
- 5:28Speaker 7: have earlier in the game that marn't converted.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I mean, how do you go about getting guys to convert?
- 5:35Speaker 6: Is it more focused on the on the moments?
- 5:37Speaker 4: Is it like how do you.
- 5:42Speaker 9: Yeah, Well, no, I mean there's uh, you know, look
- 5:49Speaker 9: at if you look at the shot attempts we've had.
- 5:52Speaker 9: Let's just go back to the last three games. Uh,
- 5:55Speaker 9: you know, We've had X number of shot attempts, about
- 5:59Speaker 9: one hundred eighty seven to be exact, and you know
- 6:02Speaker 9: we've only got we've had over one hundred of those
- 6:05Speaker 9: either blocked or missed the net. So there's your there's
- 6:09Speaker 9: your formula for you know, having success is to get
- 6:13Speaker 9: more of those attempts on net. And you know, we
- 6:17Speaker 9: have great structure in our defensive zone. We need to
- 6:21Speaker 9: get better structure in the offensive zone. There's certainly some
- 6:25Speaker 9: things that we can do. There's things that we talked
- 6:27Speaker 9: about this morning, and we just have to keep trying
- 6:30Speaker 9: to build on it. But you know, we can't defer
- 6:34Speaker 9: to passing. We've got to have a shot first mentality
- 6:37Speaker 9: and we've got to get pucks through. You know, forty
- 6:41Speaker 9: four percent of the pucks that we shoot getting on
- 6:43Speaker 9: net isn't a good enough percentage.
- 6:45Speaker 5: You mentioned the shots blocked if we don't get on debt.
- 6:48Speaker 6: Does that have anything to do with the location of
- 6:50Speaker 6: the shots or is it more the shots are taked
- 6:53Speaker 6: for where they are, but then they get on it.
- 6:55Speaker 9: Uh, there's I mean, you're always going to have some
- 6:58Speaker 9: shots blocked and you're always going to have missnets. It's
- 7:00Speaker 9: that you know, that's just the way it is. But
- 7:02Speaker 9: I think that we you know, and we we've talked
- 7:06Speaker 9: about it. I think we take too long to get
- 7:07Speaker 9: shots away, and uh, you know, fractions and I'm talking
- 7:11Speaker 9: fractions of seconds are the difference between somebody getting a
- 7:15Speaker 9: stick on it and going into the stands or us
- 7:18Speaker 9: getting a shot with a potential rebound and two or
- 7:21Speaker 9: three cracks at it from there. So you know, there
- 7:25Speaker 9: certainly is a way for us to upgrade those opportunities.
- 7:30Speaker 6: In your experience and you've worked with, you know, multiple.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Teams, Why why you guys has.
- 7:36Speaker 6: To take to shoot?
- 7:37Speaker 8: Is it because there are tends to be unselfish players
- 7:40Speaker 8: at times in commonality.
- 7:43Speaker 9: Yeah, that's a bit of a you know that, that's
- 7:46Speaker 9: probably the biggest thing is there. You know, they're being
- 7:49Speaker 9: unselfish and they're trying to set their teammate up. We
- 7:52Speaker 9: want them to be selfish. We talked about that this morning.
- 7:55Speaker 9: If you're selfish as a shooter, if you're selfish as
- 7:57Speaker 9: an offensive player, that just means you're you know, you're
- 8:01Speaker 9: going to the net. You're putting pucks to the net
- 8:03Speaker 9: and it's good for the team. So you know, that's
- 8:07Speaker 9: it's a good observation by you, and I think that
- 8:10Speaker 9: we just have to stop deferring and start taking more shots.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Looked like Shane was Berkeley's playing last night. Did you
- 8:18Speaker 5: play from Shane and then spot last night? Maybe even
- 8:21Speaker 5: something you want.
- 8:21Speaker 6: To see from him and goes forward?
- 8:23Speaker 9: Yeah, I thought, you know, we're talking about being a shooter.
- 8:26Speaker 9: Shane writes a shooter, you know. And I thought he
- 8:31Speaker 9: had a couple of good opportunities last night, and we
- 8:34Speaker 9: wanted to use his speed down the wing and and
- 8:38Speaker 9: you know, maybe not have to come two hundred feet
- 8:41Speaker 9: from an uh you know, from a centerman standpoint. So
- 8:45Speaker 9: we'll see how we go in where this goes from here.
- 8:47Speaker 4: And never is what he stacked a couple of good
- 8:49Speaker 4: games where I just what you liked about how he's
- 8:51Speaker 4: handled the year so far, the start off.
- 8:54Speaker 9: Yeah, he's been well, they've all been really professional about it.
- 8:57Speaker 9: And you know, he's gotten an opportunity here and he's
- 9:02Speaker 9: played well. You know, we haven't given him any run support,
- 9:05Speaker 9: so to speak, but he's played well enough to have,
- 9:09Speaker 9: you know, have better results than he's gotten.
- 9:11Speaker 8: Lane Ben Myers game last night, I had his system
- 9:14Speaker 8: lader and gold the shots in a couple of hits.
- 9:17Speaker 6: Two questions, what's your coaching staff say to give both
- 9:20Speaker 6: his game last night?
- 9:21Speaker 1: And was there anything specific on.
- 9:23Speaker 6: The kind ofly he took the net as.
- 9:26Speaker 9: Far as feedback that he had, Yeah, I mean, as
- 9:30Speaker 9: far as as far as coaching staff, we want to
- 9:32Speaker 9: keep playing the way he is. He he's using his speed,
- 9:36Speaker 9: he's in you know, he's in on puck's on the
- 9:40Speaker 9: fore check, you know, and he's he's owning the puck
- 9:44Speaker 9: in the in the offensive zone as well.
- 9:46Speaker 6: You know.
- 9:47Speaker 9: I mean he took one of the net in the
- 9:49Speaker 9: first period. He was coming off the wall taking one
- 9:52Speaker 9: of the net when he made the play to Winterton,
- 9:53Speaker 9: and you know, he obviously took one to the net.
- 9:57Speaker 9: I don't like penalties two hundre feet away from our nett,
- 10:01Speaker 9: but I can live with those penalties when we're taking
- 10:03Speaker 9: pucks of the net.
- 10:04Speaker 8: Heart, what do you want to see from Janyuan as
- 10:07Speaker 8: he kind of waits for another opportunity.
- 10:09Speaker 7: To get back in the line.
- 10:10Speaker 9: Well, he's got to stay ready. That's the first thing.
- 10:12Speaker 9: That's one of the biggest things. It's not just for
- 10:14Speaker 9: a younger player, it's for any player who hasn't played
- 10:17Speaker 9: for you know a few games. Is you got to
- 10:19Speaker 9: stay ready. You got to make sure you're ready and
- 10:20Speaker 9: you're in game shape. That's step one. Step two is
- 10:24Speaker 9: when he gets back in you know his detail, his
- 10:29Speaker 9: defensive play, and I want him to do what I'm
- 10:32Speaker 9: talking about with everybody else. I want to use his shot.
- 10:34Speaker 2: All right, Johnny is back from his national TV adventure.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Is going to have him back as always, especially here
- 10:40Speaker 3: where he's always welcome on and cracking this morning. Of course,
- 10:42Speaker 3: I play for the crack at Hockey Network NHL on TNT,
- 10:46Speaker 3: Amazon Prime as well, and tour guide for color Analyst
- 10:50Speaker 3: and our pal Eddie Old Chik back in town as well, Johnny,
- 10:54Speaker 3: how are you? I heard dinner was on the menu
- 10:56Speaker 3: and I noticed in this time ed Zoe paid for it.
- 11:00Speaker 7: He did tonight. I got to get him credit. We
- 11:02Speaker 7: kind of trade off that way, and tonight was his.
- 11:06Speaker 7: He kind of set me up. He told me last
- 11:08Speaker 7: night that he wasn't going to pay, so I was
- 11:11Speaker 7: ready to pay. I put my pennies aside, but he
- 11:16Speaker 7: broke down. So it's all good, Mike. All good?
- 11:19Speaker 2: Is ed Zoe medium mersdy kind of guy?
- 11:21Speaker 7: No, he's completely well done.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Oh, cook to perfection, more.
- 11:26Speaker 7: More well done than I've ever seen another human being
- 11:31Speaker 7: well done. Me, it has to be basically shoe leather,
- 11:35Speaker 7: and he's happy see more on the rare side.
- 11:38Speaker 3: That sounds like my wife who loves it basically like
- 11:41Speaker 3: its charred black and wants to make sure everything is cooked.
- 11:45Speaker 3: I liked a little bit of tenderness, like right smack
- 11:48Speaker 3: in the middle. I yet to have some juices kind
- 11:50Speaker 3: of oozing out of it.
- 11:51Speaker 7: Yeah. No, I lean more rare, and he is a
- 11:56Speaker 7: If he gets a prime rib, he will ask for
- 11:59Speaker 7: the end cut as well done as possible. Well, then
- 12:03Speaker 7: it makes no bones about it.
- 12:04Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Well, then again you have the juicus here to dip
- 12:07Speaker 3: it in and it's all good. It's all good, but
- 12:10Speaker 3: great to have you back ed. Zoe back in downtown
- 12:12Speaker 3: as well and full house. It seems like here for
- 12:15Speaker 3: the press box coming up against Winnipeg, and I kind
- 12:18Speaker 3: of lead into this here first off with the goaltending
- 12:20Speaker 3: picture and it seems as if Joey de Cord getting
- 12:23Speaker 3: back on the ice. That's a step in the right direction.
- 12:26Speaker 3: But in the meantime they've had a jugglest thing with
- 12:29Speaker 3: Matt Murray. Then Philip Grubauer getting a win in Saint Louis.
- 12:33Speaker 3: But it really just seemed as if we have seen
- 12:36Speaker 3: Matt Murray turn the clock back a little bit here,
- 12:40Speaker 3: and it couldn't have come right now at a better time.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I think at this point of the season. What's your
- 12:46Speaker 3: outlook right now on this goaltending picture.
- 12:48Speaker 7: Well, you hope that obviously, I hope it continues. I mean,
- 12:51Speaker 7: it's funny because we talked about the three goalies and
- 12:54Speaker 7: the oddity of it all, and maybe it takes a
- 12:58Speaker 7: roster spot away from another player, skater forward, a d
- 13:02Speaker 7: that you might need. You know, that was earlier in
- 13:04Speaker 7: the season, and whether or not there's going to be,
- 13:06Speaker 7: you know, enough work for these guys. Are they going
- 13:09Speaker 7: to sit way too long? And you know, and Joey
- 13:11Speaker 7: played every game of that homestand you know, he got
- 13:14Speaker 7: to a situation where okay, now because of need, they're
- 13:18Speaker 7: thrust into duty. Both guys I thought played really well
- 13:21Speaker 7: on the weekend on the road. Obviously I didn't see
- 13:23Speaker 7: the game against Columbus. It's seeing clips. I read about it.
- 13:27Speaker 7: I've heard about it, and yes he did. He did
- 13:29Speaker 7: a great job. Matt Murray did a great job, so
- 13:32Speaker 7: did Grubauer and Saint Louis. It'll be interesting to see,
- 13:35Speaker 7: you know, what holds up, you know, tonight and who
- 13:39Speaker 7: gets the start. You know, I would think it's going
- 13:41Speaker 7: to be Matt Murray against a much more difficult opponent
- 13:45Speaker 7: in my opinion in Winnipeg. We'll see and then the cord,
- 13:49Speaker 7: you know, with a sighting at practice. That's interesting because
- 13:52Speaker 7: you know, we don't get a lot of information, but
- 13:54Speaker 7: some of the information that I was getting from people
- 13:56Speaker 7: that I trust was kind of negati about Joey's the
- 14:02Speaker 7: duration of his injury. So this is good news to
- 14:05Speaker 7: see that he was able to get on the ice
- 14:07Speaker 7: and go through whatever he did. That's nothing but a positive.
- 14:10Speaker 7: But in the meantime, I think short term for the fans,
- 14:13Speaker 7: it's a Grubauer Murray situation and it's just going to
- 14:16Speaker 7: be up to Lane to figure out, you know, which opponent,
- 14:19Speaker 7: which game and so on as they move forward.
- 14:21Speaker 3: And because it seems as if with the way that
- 14:23Speaker 3: this team plays, goaltending has to be a big slice
- 14:27Speaker 3: of the pie as far as success, we've seen this
- 14:29Speaker 3: and part of this is also because they have been
- 14:32Speaker 3: struggling to score goals for this year, they are toward
- 14:35Speaker 3: the bottom of goals scored for per game, and they're
- 14:38Speaker 3: right now last in the NHL at five on five
- 14:41Speaker 3: goals for the entire season. Lane Lambert is set after
- 14:44Speaker 3: practice and it was optional on Wednesday. He wants the
- 14:46Speaker 3: players to play with more of a selfish approach. I mean,
- 14:51Speaker 3: and this could go between how some guys are just
- 14:54Speaker 3: wired to pass the puck but you know just before shoot,
- 14:56Speaker 3: or whether they're just coming off a plane previous assistance
- 14:59Speaker 3: where it's a little more east west of line. But Johnny,
- 15:02Speaker 3: what's your read here on the cause as of this
- 15:05Speaker 3: right now? In the direction that they maybe have to go,
- 15:08Speaker 3: I would.
- 15:09Speaker 7: Just tell everybody to cool your jets and don't get
- 15:11Speaker 7: too worked up about the fact that they can't score.
- 15:14Speaker 7: I don't think that's a surprise. Based on the players
- 15:18Speaker 7: that they have, the type of team that it is,
- 15:22Speaker 7: we know a lot of things need to be in
- 15:24Speaker 7: play for them to be successful. The most important thing
- 15:27Speaker 7: for this team is to play a strong defensive game
- 15:31Speaker 7: that grinds the opponents into the ice, supported by capable goaltending.
- 15:35Speaker 7: If they continue to do that, I think the goals
- 15:39Speaker 7: will come. It's going to be challenging. It's going to
- 15:42Speaker 7: probably take a lot more patience that maybe people have
- 15:45Speaker 7: right now. And know there's people after the Columbus game
- 15:47Speaker 7: that are ready to jump off a bridge because they
- 15:49Speaker 7: couldn't score against Jeff b Reeves in that game, against
- 15:52Speaker 7: a team that played the night before and a flu
- 15:54Speaker 7: and sickness going through their room and all of that.
- 15:56Speaker 7: I get it. But the style of play that Lane
- 16:00Speaker 7: has put down here will win, and the Kraken need
- 16:04Speaker 7: to just embrace it. And I think the players have
- 16:07Speaker 7: and I think it's interesting. You know he talks about
- 16:10Speaker 7: getting in better position offensively to get more shot volume. Well,
- 16:14Speaker 7: I think what they could do is basically simplify their
- 16:17Speaker 7: offensive game and it will. It will do them a
- 16:20Speaker 7: world of good because you know, when I watch them
- 16:23Speaker 7: play offensively, sometimes they psych a little bit too much.
- 16:27Speaker 7: They look for a scene pass that might be you know,
- 16:30Speaker 7: either riskier impossible. They're looking for perfect plays. So it's
- 16:35Speaker 7: meat and potatoes defensively, meat and potatoes offensively that means
- 16:39Speaker 7: low to high point shots get to the net period.
- 16:43Speaker 7: And if they do that, I think they'll score. And
- 16:47Speaker 7: if they continue to play a solid brand of hockey,
- 16:49Speaker 7: because every time you want to talk about, well they're
- 16:51Speaker 7: at the Barn League offensively, Well, they're at the upper
- 16:55Speaker 7: end of it in terms of their defensive play. So
- 16:58Speaker 7: you know, I looked at some fancy numbers last week
- 17:00Speaker 7: and yes, you know, goals for expected not so good,
- 17:03Speaker 7: goals for against expected the best. So that's okay. You
- 17:09Speaker 7: can't get into where it was last year. As soon
- 17:11Speaker 7: as you get risky, it's trouble. So I think we
- 17:15Speaker 7: just have to fans sit back and let them play
- 17:18Speaker 7: their system and go through this process and see how
- 17:21Speaker 7: it plays out.
- 17:22Speaker 3: I'll add to that as well. They've given up exactly
- 17:25Speaker 3: a grand total of one five on five goal, one
- 17:28Speaker 3: five on five goal now over the last one hundred
- 17:31Speaker 3: and twenty minutes.
- 17:32Speaker 2: That's not too shabby, and that.
- 17:34Speaker 7: I'm glad you brought that up, because that's a metric
- 17:36Speaker 7: that I look at all the time, and goal for
- 17:39Speaker 7: goals against five on five is a key stat and
- 17:44Speaker 7: it usually leads you to a good conclusion, you know,
- 17:46Speaker 7: and that's what you look for in any statistic conclusion.
- 17:50Speaker 7: Otherwise it's just a number that kind of you get
- 17:52Speaker 7: thrown out there and it sound intelligent and you start
- 17:54Speaker 7: wirping up numbers, but basically it's got to lead you
- 17:57Speaker 7: down a good path and five on five. Will remember,
- 18:00Speaker 7: in the second year this franchise, when they did make
- 18:03Speaker 7: the playoffs, they led the league in five on five.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Goals, Johnny, what difference does it make with Jared McCann
- 18:09Speaker 3: and Freddie Goodrow out right now?
- 18:11Speaker 7: Well, it hurts them, you know, with Freddie number one
- 18:15Speaker 7: face off wise, and this team is severely challenged to
- 18:18Speaker 7: win face offs, and it's going to be the case
- 18:20Speaker 7: and Chandler Stevenson has to take way too many face offs.
- 18:24Speaker 7: Goudreau and the lineup will alleviate that issue. He's a
- 18:29Speaker 7: right handed shot, which gives the coach an option, you know,
- 18:33Speaker 7: in certain circumstances to get him on his power side.
- 18:36Speaker 7: When you go at it here, you basically have Shane
- 18:39Speaker 7: Wright as your only right handed option. And Shane's not
- 18:42Speaker 7: there yet. He's not very good in the face off circle.
- 18:44Speaker 7: He's going to improve as he gets older and gets stronger,
- 18:47Speaker 7: but it's not there. Beniers is holding his own, but
- 18:49Speaker 7: he's fifty to fifty at best, usually around forty seven percent.
- 18:53Speaker 7: Stevenson is an excellent faceoff man, but needs to have support,
- 18:57Speaker 7: you know, and Ben Myers and Ben Myers and his
- 19:00Speaker 7: line mates played very well against Columbus. You know, that
- 19:02Speaker 7: was that was good. So that's a positive, that yeah,
- 19:06Speaker 7: And that's a yeah. And he's a good player, you know,
- 19:08Speaker 7: he's he's one of these guys that you know, it's
- 19:11Speaker 7: it's unfortunate that he's just kind of typecast as a tweener,
- 19:15Speaker 7: a and a call up and a guy that can
- 19:17Speaker 7: go up and down between the NHL and the EHL
- 19:19Speaker 7: and made basically an HL veteran guy for that purpose only.
- 19:23Speaker 7: But I always felt in the two camps that I've
- 19:25Speaker 7: seen him that he deserved more of an opportunity than
- 19:28Speaker 7: he was given. So this is good for him. This
- 19:30Speaker 7: is good that he's he can move, he's an excellent skater,
- 19:34Speaker 7: he's an outstanding college player. I mean, he is not
- 19:37Speaker 7: too far away from being, you know, in a in
- 19:40Speaker 7: a group of twelve at the NHL level on a
- 19:42Speaker 7: regular basis, and he's proving that he wants to stick around.
- 19:45Speaker 7: So good for him. We'll see when they when they
- 19:48Speaker 7: get healthier. But you know what, the way the schedule is,
- 19:52Speaker 7: it's going to be a revolving door with injuries all
- 19:54Speaker 7: year for every team around the league.
- 19:56Speaker 3: I also love what Lane Lambert said Johnny about Ben
- 19:59Speaker 3: Meyer the other night, and he was smack with a
- 20:03Speaker 3: goaltender interference penalty driving the net and that will just
- 20:07Speaker 3: drive coaches while pull their hair out when you take
- 20:09Speaker 3: a penalty two hundred feet away from your own net.
- 20:11Speaker 3: And he said so as well. But he can always
- 20:14Speaker 3: live with those penalties because Ben Myers is doing what
- 20:19Speaker 3: everyone has been commissioned on this team to do, and
- 20:22Speaker 3: that to make a B line right toward the front
- 20:25Speaker 3: of the nets right.
- 20:25Speaker 7: And again, this is a process because for some players
- 20:30Speaker 7: on this roster it doesn't come naturally and it has
- 20:33Speaker 7: to kind of get extracted out of them and it
- 20:36Speaker 7: might take, you know, half a season. Hopefully not, but
- 20:40Speaker 7: maybe it will for them to do it in numbers
- 20:43Speaker 7: and to a man, and that's what you're driving for.
- 20:46Speaker 7: So good on him for playing that way in his role.
- 20:52Speaker 7: He has to, so it's a little bit easier in
- 20:55Speaker 7: other roles with other guys who are National Hockey League
- 20:59Speaker 7: players are looking at careers and bodies of work and
- 21:04Speaker 7: contracts and all these different things. They need to do it,
- 21:07Speaker 7: you know, And that's why I think if they simplify
- 21:10Speaker 7: their game offensively. As they're playing defensively, the goals are
- 21:14Speaker 7: going to start to come. But it's not going to
- 21:16Speaker 7: be an easy way to play. And you know, most
- 21:19Speaker 7: of the teams go through a situation like this.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Berkeley Catton is past a nine game mark, now three
- 21:25Speaker 3: assists so far, still looking for his first NHL goal.
- 21:28Speaker 3: He's been playing up, he's been playing down, he's been
- 21:31Speaker 3: playing out there for the last minute of regulation, all
- 21:35Speaker 3: over the place. At this point, Johnny, what do you
- 21:37Speaker 3: make out of Berkeley Catton at this point in the NHL?
- 21:41Speaker 7: Getting better? But still, you know, the circumstances have given
- 21:45Speaker 7: him an opportunity to be here, and with a team
- 21:48Speaker 7: that doesn't have a skill need with McCann being out
- 21:51Speaker 7: of the lineup, a team that had it has a
- 21:54Speaker 7: little bit more of a pedigree as far as a
- 21:57Speaker 7: playoff team that can be considered that way going into
- 22:01Speaker 7: the season. Then maybe maybe there's not a spot for him,
- 22:06Speaker 7: but there is, and you can see within games, although
- 22:11Speaker 7: it comes and it goes to be fair, you know,
- 22:14Speaker 7: you can see the framework of what's going to be
- 22:16Speaker 7: a very dynamic player if he hits his stride. You
- 22:20Speaker 7: can also see, to be fair, a player that gets
- 22:23Speaker 7: separated from the puck, that gets lost out there a
- 22:26Speaker 7: little bit. And to be fair to him, he's not
- 22:29Speaker 7: really playing his natural position. He's played the majority of
- 22:32Speaker 7: his tenure here on the wings. But if they do
- 22:35Speaker 7: play him down the middle, there's a risk that's in play,
- 22:38Speaker 7: and so you know, it's difficult. And then the style
- 22:42Speaker 7: of play that the Krack and are employing, it's hard
- 22:46Speaker 7: for him as a nineteen year old, you know, because
- 22:48Speaker 7: he's not physically mature yet, so he needs to get
- 22:50Speaker 7: stronger and he's trying to do this at the NHL level, which,
- 22:53Speaker 7: to be fair to him, is not easy. So it
- 22:56Speaker 7: is what it is. I hate that phrase, but that's
- 22:58Speaker 7: what it is. You have to kind of live with
- 23:01Speaker 7: it because there is no option for him in the
- 23:04Speaker 7: American Hockey League, and I guess there really isn't an
- 23:07Speaker 7: option in junior hockey either. For right now, you know
- 23:10Speaker 7: here he is. As we get closer to the holidays,
- 23:12Speaker 7: we'll see what's in play in terms of World Juniors
- 23:15Speaker 7: and all of that. They're going to burn a year.
- 23:17Speaker 7: I think the team would never have done it if
- 23:19Speaker 7: they're not comfortable doing it. Burn a year of his
- 23:21Speaker 7: contract and just get them, get them move along. And
- 23:25Speaker 7: if you listen to Lane every day, which you do
- 23:27Speaker 7: because you're there every day doing all that work, you
- 23:29Speaker 7: hear him kind of be very guarded with how he
- 23:32Speaker 7: talks about him. He talks about him glowingly in terms
- 23:35Speaker 7: of potential. But I think what Lane's trying to get through,
- 23:39Speaker 7: and I want the fans to understand that, is that
- 23:41Speaker 7: they're trying to coach them through situations while they're trying
- 23:44Speaker 7: to win games. That's hard. That's hard on the coaching
- 23:47Speaker 7: staff and the player.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Yep, yeah, for sure. And we even heard from Lane
- 23:51Speaker 3: Lambert two days ago before the first game of the
- 23:53Speaker 3: homestand here where there was more of a guarded approach
- 23:56Speaker 3: as far as his long term picture. But he loves
- 23:58Speaker 3: his foundation as far how he can move the plot.
- 24:01Speaker 3: But it is going to be certainly of work in
- 24:03Speaker 3: progress here with them at nineteen years of age. And
- 24:05Speaker 3: funny enough, how this game just made change next year
- 24:08Speaker 3: here with the AEL thing, and a guy like Jack
- 24:11Speaker 3: O'Brien is all of a sudden eligible to go there after.
- 24:13Speaker 3: He has been tearing up the Ohl this season.
- 24:16Speaker 7: Right, and so you know that's the beauty of that situation.
- 24:19Speaker 7: But every player's different. Every players in a different circumstance.
- 24:24Speaker 7: I do think with Cat and it's more clear for
- 24:27Speaker 7: him in terms of where he's at than say where
- 24:29Speaker 7: it was a couple of years ago for Shane Right.
- 24:32Speaker 7: I think a lot that was going on with Shane
- 24:34Speaker 7: Wright when he was kind of in the same position
- 24:37Speaker 7: as psychological, you know, and the team doesn't have to
- 24:40Speaker 7: worry about that. You know, he had right coming off
- 24:42Speaker 7: his draft year and the so called slip the floor
- 24:45Speaker 7: and all these different things, and there's a lot of
- 24:47Speaker 7: media attention in Canada about Shane Wright at that time
- 24:50Speaker 7: and where he was going to play. Berkeley can basically
- 24:54Speaker 7: be comfortable in his own skin, you know, with this organization,
- 24:57Speaker 7: they're going to do everything possible to insulate him and
- 25:00Speaker 7: make sure that it works. I think if everybody's honest
- 25:03Speaker 7: and they got in a room, which they're not going
- 25:05Speaker 7: to be, but if they were, you know, they would say,
- 25:08Speaker 7: I wish we didn't have to do this with this
- 25:10Speaker 7: player at this time playing in the National Hockey League,
- 25:12Speaker 7: but they are, and I think as time marchers on,
- 25:16Speaker 7: like I said before, there's going to be injuries. So
- 25:19Speaker 7: I think because he does have a skill set that
- 25:22Speaker 7: they desperately need. It's a grinding team and there's not
- 25:26Speaker 7: a lot of prolific offensive skill on the roster. He
- 25:31Speaker 7: is supposed to be that moving forward, and you can
- 25:34Speaker 7: see it in his toolbox what he brings. You can
- 25:38Speaker 7: see that he has that. It's just it's not going
- 25:41Speaker 7: to be consistent at this level.
- 25:43Speaker 3: Kraken and Jets coming up in the second matchup of
- 25:46Speaker 3: the season. Winnipeg is ten and six coming out there
- 25:49Speaker 3: win over the Vancouver Canucks, and a lot of folks
- 25:53Speaker 3: were talking about the word regression when it came to
- 25:57Speaker 3: this team. I'm not so sure about that yet here
- 26:01Speaker 3: at this point, they got Jonathan Taves and it seems
- 26:03Speaker 3: like he's now turning back the clock on his own game.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Adding to that, Kyle Connor, Mark Schifley and Josh Morrissey
- 26:11Speaker 3: still doing their thing.
- 26:12Speaker 2: What's you read here on the challenge here for this evening, Johnny, Well.
- 26:15Speaker 7: It's going to be a very good challenge because the
- 26:17Speaker 7: Winnipeg Jets play the same way the Kraken Air attempting
- 26:21Speaker 7: to play, and I don't want to be disrespectful, but
- 26:24Speaker 7: with more talent, and that's the difference. They have an
- 26:28Speaker 7: unbelievably world class goaltender who keeps them where they need
- 26:33Speaker 7: to be every single night because he plays almost every
- 26:36Speaker 7: single night.
- 26:37Speaker 6: Yes, in Connor Hellibuck.
- 26:38Speaker 7: And then you have this core of talent led by Schifley.
- 26:43Speaker 7: You get to Connor Ballardi, get these guys up front,
- 26:47Speaker 7: you get to Josh Morrissey in the back end, and
- 26:50Speaker 7: then you go through their lineup and it gets heavy
- 26:53Speaker 7: with Adam Lowry, who's just come back from injury as
- 26:55Speaker 7: one of the best captains you know in the National
- 26:58Speaker 7: Hockey League in my opinion, a guy who can play
- 27:01Speaker 7: basically a three seed position but do it at an
- 27:04Speaker 7: elite level. He's heavy, strong, doesn't make a lot of
- 27:08Speaker 7: defensive mistakes. Jonathan Tave's unbelievable story as a legend who's
- 27:12Speaker 7: making a comeback, and now with Lowry coming back into
- 27:15Speaker 7: their lineup, Caves will slot in a better spot than
- 27:18Speaker 7: he's tried to play for the first six to seven
- 27:20Speaker 7: weeks or so as the second center. So you know,
- 27:23Speaker 7: they have an unbelievable team game that's in lockstep defensively,
- 27:29Speaker 7: and then when they need a power play goal, they
- 27:31Speaker 7: get it. When they need a game breaking play, they
- 27:34Speaker 7: get it. And they will go, they will check for
- 27:37Speaker 7: their chances, they will skate with you. They can play
- 27:40Speaker 7: any way you want. They're just in a tough neighborhood.
- 27:43Speaker 7: That Central Division is really hard and they're in the
- 27:47Speaker 7: same spot. They always are top three team depending on
- 27:50Speaker 7: where they finish, and they won the President's Trophy last year.
- 27:53Speaker 7: But Pop three team. But there's Colorado and there's Dallas,
- 27:56Speaker 7: and then there's the other teams there too. But that's
- 27:59Speaker 7: a tough neighborhood. But that's theirs. But this is this
- 28:02Speaker 7: is a great test coming off the Columbus game to
- 28:04Speaker 7: see if the Kraken won't break down and just stay
- 28:08Speaker 7: true to their consistency and how they want to play
- 28:10Speaker 7: and that cave into panic and try to score. If
- 28:13Speaker 7: you try to score the wrong way against this team,
- 28:16Speaker 7: they will be game over.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Trust me right right if you if you try to
- 28:21Speaker 3: cheat the system, they will come back and bite you.
- 28:23Speaker 3: We've seen that over and over and over with this
- 28:25Speaker 3: Winnipeg team. Well dinner with that, Zoe's all done. We
- 28:29Speaker 3: have showed this up enough as well, and Johnny and
- 28:32Speaker 3: broadcast terms nine to seven o'clock. Let's see, shall we
- 28:36Speaker 3: looking forward to it? Thanks again, my man, yep.
- 28:38Speaker 7: Great to be back in town. Look forward to the
- 28:40Speaker 7: next few games now. I don't think I miss a
- 28:42Speaker 7: game with the Kraken for three four weeks now, which
- 28:45Speaker 7: is great, and look forward to it. And let's just
- 28:48Speaker 7: hope that this continues. And again it's it's it can
- 28:52Speaker 7: be frustrating, and I think that's the one message I
- 28:55Speaker 7: want to leave with everybody is that the style of
- 28:57Speaker 7: play can be frustrating, but it's a good way to play.
- 29:01Speaker 7: It is a good way to place it the right
- 29:02Speaker 7: way to play, and Lane knows this and you just
- 29:06Speaker 7: got to trust it.
- 29:07Speaker 3: For now, all right, Johnny, You're the best. Appreciate as always,
- 29:10Speaker 3: John Forsland tvp IF. I play voice of course on
- 29:13Speaker 3: the KRACK and Hockey Network NHL on TNT, Amazon Prime
- 29:16Speaker 3: as well hanging out with us here. The krakeing in
- 29:19Speaker 3: matchup two coming up against Winnipeg Jets have always been
- 29:23Speaker 3: a tough out. The Crack and record right now three
- 29:25Speaker 3: six and four and that three nothing win they had
- 29:28Speaker 3: over Winnipeg in the first matchup of the year, the
- 29:31Speaker 3: Cracking had two empty net goals plus also Joey de
- 29:34Speaker 3: Kordad thirty two saves in net for the win. We'll
- 29:37Speaker 3: see if the Kraken had to approach this similar or
- 29:40Speaker 3: differently against Winnipeg tonight. Also there look at to even
- 29:44Speaker 3: their record at home right now with just one win
- 29:47Speaker 3: unfortunately in six tries, yet forcing overtime on three separate occasions,
- 29:52Speaker 3: with Winnipeg eventually settling for an OT point. Jordan Everley
- 29:56Speaker 3: right now leads the Kraken against Winnipeg, had to headline
- 30:00Speaker 3: time in scoring with twenty one points in thirty games.
- 30:04Speaker 2: He leads the.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Cracking right now with five goals on the season, all
- 30:07Speaker 3: have come at even strength. So the Kracking looking to
- 30:10Speaker 3: make it two wins and two tries against Winnipeg, who
- 30:13Speaker 3: was out to a great start so far this season.
- 30:15Speaker 3: We'll talk more about it this evening at six point
- 30:17Speaker 3: thirty for pregame coverage served up by Frost Brewed Corps
- 30:20Speaker 3: Light Choose Chill opening face off a little past seven
- 30:23Speaker 3: o'clock Pacific time. EVERGA fits you Al Koniski of course
- 30:27Speaker 3: on the call. I'll join you of course for pregame,
- 30:29Speaker 3: intermission and postgame coverage. As always, we certainly hope that
- 30:34Speaker 3: you can join us. Big thank you again to John
- 30:36Speaker 3: Forslund and for kracking this morning. I'm Mike Benton. Enjoy
- 30:39Speaker 3: the game and have a happy Thursday.
- 30:41Speaker 1: You're home for the Kraken Sports Radio ninety three point
- 30:44Speaker 1: three kjr FM
