- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and happy new Year, and for us, we
- 0:10Speaker 1: are hoping for better internet connections in twenty twenty six.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Jim Hayes alongside Kyle Gibson and Lancelin, gentlemen, how are
- 0:20Speaker 1: you very good year? Happy new Year? We're still alloud
- 0:23Speaker 1: to say that, And it's our first show of the
- 0:25Speaker 1: new year, so let's make it a good one. And
- 0:28Speaker 1: I was thinking, not a lot has gone on in
- 0:31Speaker 1: terms of trades for the Cardinals or any moves, so
- 0:35Speaker 1: I put it out there to the folks that keep
- 0:38Speaker 1: us in business, the viewers and the listeners, and I
- 0:41Speaker 1: asked for some questions and we got a few good ones,
- 0:43Speaker 1: so I thought we'd start this edition with those questions.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And the first question is from Kendall and his question
- 0:54Speaker 1: is with the ABS Challenge system coming this year, what
- 0:57Speaker 1: are your thoughts on how it will affect the big moments? Also,
- 1:00Speaker 1: what is the team's strategy on one to use these challenges?
- 1:05Speaker 1: Love the podcast, guys, keep up the good work. We
- 1:07Speaker 1: love the compliments. So I'm gonna throw that one out
- 1:11Speaker 1: to you Kyle first, and how do you think So
- 1:15Speaker 1: as we know it now, it's going to be all
- 1:18Speaker 1: through the season and in the postseason, and you're gonna
- 1:21Speaker 1: have two challenges to the tap right, and if your
- 1:25Speaker 1: challenge is held up, then you keep it. If not,
- 1:27Speaker 1: you lose it. You get too How do you think
- 1:30Speaker 1: it's going to affect like a big moment? Strike three,
- 1:33Speaker 1: that's the ball game, hold the phone, there's a tap.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I guess that's one of the questions is how will
- 1:39Speaker 1: it impact the big moments.
- 1:42Speaker 2: I think it's gonna make certain big moments even better.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I mean, I think you'll have certain strikeouts or certain
- 1:49Speaker 2: ball threes or ball fours turn into a strike. And
- 1:52Speaker 2: I think in the right moment, with the right delivery
- 1:56Speaker 2: on the jumbo tron, the crowd's gonna love it or
- 1:59Speaker 2: the crowd's gonna hate it, and you're going to hear groans,
- 2:02Speaker 2: you know, just experiencing a little bit last summer, just
- 2:05Speaker 2: in my in my stent in the minor leagues, it
- 2:08Speaker 2: goes quick. I think it's a good move to do.
- 2:11Speaker 2: The only thing I dislike about it is that because
- 2:14Speaker 2: you only get two challenges or three challenges, whatever they do.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I think the last part of Kendall's question is really
- 2:21Speaker 2: interesting is what is the team strategy. I think it's
- 2:25Speaker 2: slightly unfair to make this a strategy. You shouldn't have
- 2:28Speaker 2: to strategize how to get calls right. You know, you
- 2:31Speaker 2: should just be able to get them right as a player.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And I think each player should have their own challenge
- 2:37Speaker 2: for the game and you get to use it whenever
- 2:40Speaker 2: you want to use it, because I think or else
- 2:43Speaker 2: you're going to have if you have two for the game,
- 2:45Speaker 2: you're going to have parameters when you can actually make
- 2:47Speaker 2: sure a call is right or wrong, and I just
- 2:50Speaker 2: don't like that. I think you're going to have certain
- 2:52Speaker 2: players pressure to not use them. The manager's gonna have
- 2:55Speaker 2: certain restrictions when you can't use them, and then one
- 2:57Speaker 2: player is going to be kind of penalized versus the
- 3:00Speaker 2: other because if your closer gets to the ninth inning
- 3:03Speaker 2: and your seventh hole hitter use the challenge in the
- 3:05Speaker 2: second inning and messed it up, and then you use
- 3:07Speaker 2: another one in the fifth inning and mess it up, well,
- 3:09Speaker 2: then your closer doesn't have a challenge, So that would
- 3:13Speaker 2: be my only shift. I am not in favor of
- 3:15Speaker 2: rules that are going to pit players against each other,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and I think this is going to be one that
- 3:20Speaker 2: is going to make for a little bit of friction
- 3:21Speaker 2: because in really the in the big moments, a player
- 3:27Speaker 2: is not actually in charge of his own correct or
- 3:31Speaker 2: in correct call.
- 3:32Speaker 1: So a picture lance is looking out for the picture
- 3:36Speaker 1: side of things. But I think you can't just have
- 3:39Speaker 1: unlimited challenges because people will go berserk with it. So
- 3:43Speaker 1: I'm on board with a couple. How do you look
- 3:46Speaker 1: at it and do first go ahead?
- 3:48Speaker 2: I'm not on board for unlimited I think I think
- 3:51Speaker 2: each player should just get their own and then if
- 3:54Speaker 2: you mess it up, you're out, and then you don't
- 3:57Speaker 2: get to do it again. I just think that, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 2: the youngest player on the team shouldn't never be allowed
- 4:04Speaker 2: to challenge because he's only got two years of service
- 4:06Speaker 2: time and he can't take a challenge from the ten
- 4:08Speaker 2: year vet who's really going to use it and knows
- 4:10Speaker 2: the strikes on a little bit better. I just I
- 4:13Speaker 2: don't like that idea. That's just my personal preference. And
- 4:18Speaker 2: it's that's so quick, Jim. It's not like it's a
- 4:20Speaker 2: ten second deal. This is like tap your hat you're
- 4:23Speaker 2: right or wrong, and you turn around and tell the
- 4:26Speaker 2: umpire sorry, or you just put your head down, whatever
- 4:28Speaker 2: it is.
- 4:28Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying. Like you move on.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Hey, that ten year vets don't know the strikes on
- 4:32Speaker 4: like you think they do either. I've seen Matt Carpenter
- 4:34Speaker 4: tell me that there's no way that's a strike. There's
- 4:38Speaker 4: no way, and he goes and looks it's in the
- 4:40Speaker 4: box and he goes it's still not a strike. So
- 4:44Speaker 4: it's going to be here's the truth matter. We want
- 4:47Speaker 4: strikes to be strikes and we want balls to be balls.
- 4:50Speaker 4: This is a way to get there full time. You know,
- 4:53Speaker 4: if we could have the automatic strikes on it at
- 4:55Speaker 4: all times, I think that would be great. But they're
- 4:58Speaker 4: not ready to go there yet. So I think this
- 5:00Speaker 4: is gonna be The strategy is use it for a
- 5:03Speaker 4: big moment. Big moment in the game Runners in second
- 5:05Speaker 4: and third you got the pitcher up against the wall,
- 5:08Speaker 4: blah blah blah, borderline pitch. You know, you take your time.
- 5:11Speaker 4: So I think it's gonna be good at times. And
- 5:15Speaker 4: I think you're gonna be at times where you're like, hey,
- 5:17Speaker 4: you know, there's gonna be teams that don't use it
- 5:20Speaker 4: in a way that you're you're kind of looking at
- 5:23Speaker 4: them to use it. I guess when you have a
- 5:26Speaker 4: three to two count, bases loaded, and a borderline pitch
- 5:29Speaker 4: gets called. I think everyone wants that pitch to be
- 5:31Speaker 4: right because it impacts the game. So I think that's
- 5:35Speaker 4: their thought process of this, but I think it could
- 5:37Speaker 4: go a lot of different directions. But I will say this,
- 5:39Speaker 4: no one liked the challenge system. No one liked the
- 5:41Speaker 4: NFL when they started doing instant replay. And the more
- 5:44Speaker 4: you get calls right, the more happier people are because
- 5:47Speaker 4: the true outcome of the game is factored by the
- 5:50Speaker 4: players doing what they need to do in the call
- 5:52Speaker 4: getting right. So that's the main thing. Hopefully, one day
- 5:55Speaker 4: we get to where the strike zone is fully automated
- 6:00Speaker 4: each hitter from their knees to whatever their belly button
- 6:03Speaker 4: or whatever that might be the strike zone no matter
- 6:05Speaker 4: what their you know, their stances this or that. You know,
- 6:08Speaker 4: with all this AI and stuff like that, maybe one
- 6:12Speaker 4: day it will happen. But all in all, I think
- 6:13Speaker 4: it's gonna be a positive. But the more you can
- 6:17Speaker 4: sit there and wait for a game to end, if
- 6:21Speaker 4: it's a strike three that they're challenging and stuff like that,
- 6:24Speaker 4: it's just gonna make more suspense and fans are gonna
- 6:26Speaker 4: love it. If it goes well for him, they're gonna
- 6:28Speaker 4: hate it if it goes against him. I like the idea, Kyle.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Everybody gets their own. So when you're on the scoreboard,
- 6:33Speaker 4: you get a they get an X through them. They're
- 6:36Speaker 4: out of challenges for that day, you know. So it's like, hey,
- 6:39Speaker 4: you don't get one. You got xed out.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Brother, Nice try I can hear it now, though I
- 6:44Speaker 2: can hear it now. In the postgame, Jim walks into
- 6:47Speaker 2: the locker room. He goes up to Lance and he says, Hey, Lance,
- 6:51Speaker 2: wouldn't it have been nice in the sixth inning if
- 6:53Speaker 2: you could have challenged that to to strike call that
- 6:56Speaker 2: ended up leading to a walk? But you know, so
- 6:59Speaker 2: and so you guys had ran out of challenges. And
- 7:02Speaker 2: then Lance has to dodge that question because Jim's gonna
- 7:05Speaker 2: ask it, and Lance has.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it would have got.
- 7:09Speaker 4: It right, if that dick would have got it right
- 7:11Speaker 4: the aning before I would have had a chance to
- 7:13Speaker 4: use it. You're right, Jim, That's what.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I see what I'm saying, Like, I don't I just
- 7:16Speaker 3: I don't like that situation.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I think it is going to happen that question will
- 7:21Speaker 2: be asked, wouldn't it have been nice to have a challenge.
- 7:24Speaker 3: It's gonna be asked, and I don't like it.
- 7:27Speaker 1: See, there is an unintended consequence that's running your guys wheelhouse.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Say Kyle Gibson's pitching or Lance Linn. They go, well,
- 7:35Speaker 1: he's earned the benefit of the doubt on that strike
- 7:37Speaker 1: call because he's Lance Linn or Kyle Gibson. These guys
- 7:40Speaker 1: have commanded the strike zone. That's com com no more,
- 7:44Speaker 1: no more benefit of the doubt for veteran pitchers, veteran hitters.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Every levels the playing field.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Every borderline pitch is not challenged. I promise you just
- 7:54Speaker 2: the three weeks, four weeks I was down there this year,
- 7:56Speaker 2: Every borderline pitch is not challenged. They have an iPad
- 7:59Speaker 2: in the out and they see six or seven seconds
- 8:03Speaker 2: after ooh, we should have challenged that one.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Oh a good thing.
- 8:05Speaker 2: We didn't challenge it. Every borderline pitch is not challenged.
- 8:09Speaker 2: But if you give the players stuff like that, yes,
- 8:14Speaker 2: and if you give the player their discretion, who's to
- 8:16Speaker 2: say that a leadoff hit or the inning challenging a
- 8:19Speaker 2: strike call doesn't change the inning. That's where I think, like, oh,
- 8:22Speaker 2: save it for the big moment. Well, what if the
- 8:24Speaker 2: big moment never comes and you get to the sixth
- 8:26Speaker 2: inning and you're getting beat by six runs and it
- 8:28Speaker 2: would have really been nice to challenge that call in
- 8:30Speaker 2: the third inning to start a big inning. That's where
- 8:32Speaker 2: I think you just give the players their own and
- 8:35Speaker 2: let the players use it their own discretion.
- 8:37Speaker 1: All right. The next question we have is from Adam,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and I think a lot of Cardinal fans as will
- 8:42Speaker 1: get closer to spring training and opening day, Adam asks
- 8:48Speaker 1: who should we expect to take the bump on opening Day?
- 8:52Speaker 1: Is it Libby? I know you guys are both Libby guys.
- 8:55Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 8:59Speaker 4: Don't know if the guy's on the team yet that's
- 9:02Speaker 4: going to take the pump opening day? Uh, that's my guess,
- 9:06Speaker 4: to be honest with you. I think that there's someone
- 9:08Speaker 4: that's going to be added that is going to be
- 9:11Speaker 4: between him and May. Would be my would be probably
- 9:14Speaker 4: be the guests that I go with. Obviously, that's gonna
- 9:17Speaker 4: be up to Ali and who he thinks can kind
- 9:19Speaker 4: of get the kick the season off to how they
- 9:23Speaker 4: you know, how they like it. But you know, I'm
- 9:26Speaker 4: going to go out and say either it's May or
- 9:30Speaker 4: the guys don't on the team.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Yet, Wow, would what do you think, Kyle?
- 9:36Speaker 3: I would say May, and I would agree.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I think there's still a chance that somebody's added, but
- 9:41Speaker 2: opening day starter, you know, unless you have a rotation
- 9:44Speaker 2: of veterans and you have a clear cut guy, it's
- 9:47Speaker 2: just it's it's a pretty cool process to go through
- 9:49Speaker 2: in spring training, pretty you know, every everybody wants to
- 9:53Speaker 2: do it, you know, And I think that's something that
- 9:57Speaker 2: is going to be a pretty big honor for whoever
- 9:58Speaker 2: it is.
- 9:59Speaker 3: And right now.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Maybe he's not on a team, but I'd say it's
- 10:04Speaker 2: it's probably Dustin May or if you've got a guy
- 10:07Speaker 2: that you know from last year it really was your
- 10:10Speaker 2: guy and you want to give him that give him
- 10:12Speaker 2: that nod as hey, you earned it from last year
- 10:15Speaker 2: and you've had a good spring, then you know that's
- 10:16Speaker 2: probably what it's going to be. But you know, if
- 10:18Speaker 2: I had to pick, it'd probably be May written.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I think as it stands out, I would go
- 10:22Speaker 1: with May with Libby in the discussion, depending how things
- 10:26Speaker 1: go at spring training. And I know you guys are
- 10:29Speaker 1: both Libby guys, Like I have a film, this could
- 10:32Speaker 1: be a really good year for libertur.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Yeah, especially building up of what he did last year.
- 10:37Speaker 4: I mean, he put himself in a really good spot
- 10:39Speaker 4: last year to even go to the next level. People
- 10:42Speaker 4: don't understand how hard it is from what he did
- 10:45Speaker 4: minor leagues to starter, but then going from a reliever, uh,
- 10:49Speaker 4: you know the year before to starting all last year.
- 10:52Speaker 4: This is going to be his year to kind of
- 10:54Speaker 4: I think break out. I think you saw this stepping
- 10:59Speaker 4: stones two that last year with the good starts and
- 11:02Speaker 4: then learning how to deal with a full season and
- 11:05Speaker 4: navigating lineups and stuff like that, and then I think
- 11:09Speaker 4: this year is going to be another step. Obviously, you
- 11:11Speaker 4: need health and then you need to you know, he
- 11:14Speaker 4: needs to make sure he goes and grows on what
- 11:16Speaker 4: he did last year, and then make sure that the
- 11:18Speaker 4: things that might not have worked out well for him
- 11:20Speaker 4: last year figure out how to fine tune those. And
- 11:22Speaker 4: I'm positive him and Dusty have already kind of gone
- 11:25Speaker 4: over those and that's been kind of implemented this offseason
- 11:28Speaker 4: in his program.
- 11:30Speaker 1: We saw a lot of good from a last year,
- 11:32Speaker 1: didn't we.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I think it's probably also a time where not that
- 11:36Speaker 2: this is the last chance, but I think you get
- 11:38Speaker 2: to a certain point as a as a pitcher, when
- 11:41Speaker 2: you're bouncing back, starter, reliever that you just want to
- 11:44Speaker 2: know what your role is going to be and you know,
- 11:46Speaker 2: building back up and going back down. You know, you're
- 11:49Speaker 2: probably the time here for Libby to decide, all right,
- 11:52Speaker 2: you know, am I gonna be a starter here for
- 11:54Speaker 2: the next few years or is it best for my
- 11:56Speaker 2: career to be this you know, swing man that can
- 11:59Speaker 2: get high light bridge out said for multiple innings, uh,
- 12:03Speaker 2: simplify things and really being asked to have the pen
- 12:05Speaker 2: because I think we've seen those weapons are especially on
- 12:08Speaker 2: teams that needed in their bullpen. Those weapons can be
- 12:11Speaker 2: really big, you know, for a full length season and
- 12:14Speaker 2: into the into the playoffs. So I mean Trevor May
- 12:18Speaker 2: ended up doing that at one point with the Twins
- 12:20Speaker 2: where he had been bounced back and forth and he
- 12:21Speaker 2: finally told him, hey, guys, I'm coming back from Tom
- 12:24Speaker 2: of John and I want to be a reliever. I'm
- 12:26Speaker 2: done kind of going back and forth. So this might
- 12:29Speaker 2: be a time where you know, Libby has to make
- 12:30Speaker 2: that decision, you know, depending on how the year goes,
- 12:32Speaker 2: and hopefully it is as a starter, because I think
- 12:34Speaker 2: he has the ability to be really good.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I'm telling you what I've talked to Levy. He is
- 12:39Speaker 1: a starter. He wants to start. No question, all right.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Next question is from uh Becky, and Becky says, who
- 12:49Speaker 1: will be the opening day catcher and will it depend
- 12:53Speaker 1: on who was pitching? What do you think?
- 12:58Speaker 2: I think that you did not want to pronoun it's
- 13:00Speaker 2: our last name of Ucello, and you just went, I mean,
- 13:04Speaker 2: it's Ucello, Jim, That's what it is.
- 13:06Speaker 1: You know, because we're we're on a casual basis here,
- 13:10Speaker 1: it's all good.
- 13:13Speaker 3: I would say it's it's Herrera.
- 13:15Speaker 2: And it'll be interesting what they do with the backup
- 13:18Speaker 2: catcher spot.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I mean, I think Pedro is a really, really good.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Defensive catcher and so we'll see what they do there.
- 13:25Speaker 2: But I mean, I think until you have a few things,
- 13:28Speaker 2: you know, shaken out, I think you know, Avon's getting that,
- 13:31Speaker 2: you know, opening day nine, and I think his arm
- 13:33Speaker 2: is gonna be healthy, and you know that bad is
- 13:35Speaker 2: obviously an impact back and when it's behind the plate,
- 13:38Speaker 2: you know, and you're adding some defense and he keeps
- 13:40Speaker 2: getting better, you know, that becomes an impact player.
- 13:42Speaker 3: On the field.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Yeah, what do you think I think it's Von as
- 13:47Speaker 4: long as he can throw. Is if the arms good
- 13:50Speaker 4: to go, I think, and if he is at the
- 13:53Speaker 4: point where they don't love the way he's throwing the
- 13:55Speaker 4: ball coming off surgery, pay d h and then you
- 13:59Speaker 4: have another prike carry three if it goes to that route.
- 14:03Speaker 4: But I think all things point to Von being catch
- 14:06Speaker 4: the everyday catcher, you know, four out of four out
- 14:09Speaker 4: of six games type of type of stuff. With the
- 14:12Speaker 4: way he can hit, his ability to do the things
- 14:16Speaker 4: that he needs to do to be in every catcher.
- 14:18Speaker 4: Every day catcher are there now. It's for them. They
- 14:21Speaker 4: need him to take that next step to be reliable
- 14:24Speaker 4: to the pitching staff, to be able to throw out
- 14:26Speaker 4: base runners and stuff like that. And if he's capable
- 14:29Speaker 4: of doing that, you have something that every team really
- 14:32Speaker 4: really wants in a catcher and you have to give
- 14:35Speaker 4: him every opportunity to seize that right now. So health,
- 14:39Speaker 4: you know, health being number one thing. If he's one
- 14:42Speaker 4: hundred healthy in spring training going to the season, he's
- 14:44Speaker 4: probably your opening day and I don't think it matters
- 14:46Speaker 4: who's pitching anymore. He's he's going to catch the days
- 14:49Speaker 4: that he's supposed to catch. And then we're going from there, and.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Heim Bloom talk to Herrera about it. I was surprised.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Herrera said he's going to have the surgery in the
- 14:59Speaker 1: off season, which you had, and he said, Jims on
- 15:01Speaker 1: board with him catching because they did as you remember,
- 15:04Speaker 1: toy with him in the outfield just a little bit
- 15:07Speaker 1: because his bat is a difference maker and they want
- 15:10Speaker 1: to get it in the line up. So hopefully it
- 15:11Speaker 1: works out with him catching. Some signs that the Cardinals
- 15:16Speaker 1: may be headed in the right direction. We'll get to
- 15:19Speaker 1: that when we come back from break with more of
- 15:21Speaker 1: Cardinal territory. DraftKings Sportsbook and official sports betting partner of

- 16:25Speaker 1: You're watching Cardinal Territory part of the Foul Territory Network. Now,
- 16:30Speaker 1: Baseball America, very respected publication, just came out with their
- 16:36Speaker 1: ratings and they say the Cardinals have the most improved
- 16:41Speaker 1: minor league system in Major League Baseball. I jotted down
- 16:45Speaker 1: some notes because Weatherholt, and Doyle topped the list. No
- 16:49Speaker 1: surprise there. Three catchers are in the Cardinals top six
- 16:54Speaker 1: and a nineteen year old Rhinel Rodriguez is number three
- 16:58Speaker 1: at a monster year last season, and two pitchers picked
- 17:02Speaker 1: up by hem Bloom via traits. So they bolstered the
- 17:06Speaker 1: pitching staff, given themselves some more depth. But when Baseball
- 17:11Speaker 1: America says that that farm system is the most improved
- 17:16Speaker 1: in Major League baseball? Kyle, is that a sign that
- 17:19Speaker 1: things are headed in the right direction, Maybe not impacting
- 17:23Speaker 1: the season ahead of us, but certainly for the future.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And already Lance Lynn is laughing, he's calling it a
- 17:29Speaker 1: tear down.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think I have a feeling I
- 17:34Speaker 2: know where lance Is going to go, so I'll just
- 17:35Speaker 2: go ahead and get ahead of it here and I
- 17:36Speaker 2: won't steal any material. But I think it's I think
- 17:39Speaker 2: it's a good thing. I think you always want to
- 17:41Speaker 2: have good players in your system because when you are
- 17:44Speaker 2: at this point where you're winning and you need a replacement,
- 17:48Speaker 2: you have good players that are going to be able
- 17:49Speaker 2: to come up there and be stop gaps and not
- 17:52Speaker 2: have a fall off whenever you're you know, Mason win
- 17:54Speaker 2: or weather Hold or somebody has a lot of Naggie
- 17:57Speaker 2: hamstring has to go down for a couple of weeks.
- 17:58Speaker 2: So I think think that's definitely a good thing. I
- 18:01Speaker 2: think it also bolsters opportunities to trade for players in
- 18:03Speaker 2: the middle of the season and use that prospect capital
- 18:06Speaker 2: to make your big leag grosster better. But I think,
- 18:09Speaker 2: as everybody knows, not every player in your minor league
- 18:12Speaker 2: system pans out. Not every prospect becomes a really good
- 18:15Speaker 2: big leaguer, and so you want to stockpilot as many
- 18:18Speaker 2: good players as possible and have the best chance of
- 18:21Speaker 2: of you know, having those guys pan out. And I
- 18:24Speaker 2: hate the statement playing the numbers, but you do have
- 18:27Speaker 2: to play the numbers, and you want to get as
- 18:29Speaker 2: many good players as possible because you just never know
- 18:31Speaker 2: what gonna happen as he's got to develop.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Now, Lams should probably have props, maybe a bulldozer in
- 18:38Speaker 1: the background, a sledge hammer, because I know what you're
- 18:41Speaker 1: gonna say, all right, as sure as a reset. But
- 18:44Speaker 1: they are you say, they are tearing it down.
- 18:47Speaker 4: I mean, if you look at everything that's gone, I mean,
- 18:50Speaker 4: we're one more guy away from being traded for the
- 18:53Speaker 4: for the teardown to you know, pretty much be there.
- 18:56Speaker 4: But it gives you currency, right, Prospects are currency. The
- 18:59Speaker 4: more high, higher valued prospects you have, the more currency
- 19:02Speaker 4: you have in baseball, and that gives you ways to
- 19:05Speaker 4: make your big league roster better, whether they become every
- 19:08Speaker 4: day big leaguers or you can use those guys to
- 19:10Speaker 4: get bona fide every day big leaguers. Like you said,
- 19:13Speaker 4: three of the top ten are catchers, right, and I
- 19:16Speaker 4: think your big league catching crew is pretty darn good
- 19:18Speaker 4: and they're young, so that's currency. There's a lot of
- 19:22Speaker 4: things that they can do with these guys, and some
- 19:25Speaker 4: of these guys are going to be there in the
- 19:27Speaker 4: near future. And even in your big league groster is
- 19:29Speaker 4: pretty young in the same time, So how are you
- 19:32Speaker 4: going to stagger these guys coming up? Who's a guy
- 19:36Speaker 4: that kind of doesn't fit because a guy ahead of
- 19:39Speaker 4: them that you like more, It plays his position, and
- 19:43Speaker 4: then what's his value to get you a guy or
- 19:45Speaker 4: get you certain pieces to fill in the positions that
- 19:48Speaker 4: you are weaker at. So all in all, it's a
- 19:51Speaker 4: positive when you have a prospect list like they do.
- 19:55Speaker 4: I think they've got guys that they see in their
- 19:57Speaker 4: future on the next you know, years of especially in
- 20:01Speaker 4: the JJ Weather hole and guys like that, they've got
- 20:05Speaker 4: guys that they can see in their you know, top
- 20:07Speaker 4: of their lineup, in the middle of their field that
- 20:09Speaker 4: can really change the dynamic of the team. And then
- 20:12Speaker 4: now what are you going to do around that with
- 20:15Speaker 4: free agency and then using your minor league currency to
- 20:18Speaker 4: get big league talent.
- 20:21Speaker 1: So one of the guys that you mentioned or at
- 20:24Speaker 1: least referenced is Nolan Arnado, who is still a Cardinal.
- 20:29Speaker 1: There were rumors a week ago about the Angels talking
- 20:34Speaker 1: to the Cardinals, and I haven't talked to Arnado about it. Certainly,
- 20:39Speaker 1: Anaheim is right there in terms of being at home
- 20:44Speaker 1: for Nolan, But I look at that team and I
- 20:47Speaker 1: think they're kind of in the same situation with the
- 20:50Speaker 1: Cardinals in terms of a reset. They brought in new
- 20:53Speaker 1: guys who were kind of one year deals, who were
- 20:55Speaker 1: they're hoping, you know, get past injuries or down years,
- 20:59Speaker 1: And it looks to me like the Angels, like the Cardinals,
- 21:03Speaker 1: maybe don't have their eyes set on this year but
- 21:05Speaker 1: down the road. So my question is for you, Kyle,
- 21:09Speaker 1: does that seem like that's a great landing spot for
- 21:12Speaker 1: for Aronado? And is here a chance deep down he
- 21:16Speaker 1: still wants to crack at winning again.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Every player wants to crack at winning again, So yes,
- 21:22Speaker 2: I think that's on there. But I also think playing
- 21:26Speaker 2: closer to home is a big deal. Living at home
- 21:31Speaker 2: is a big deal, as Lance and I were able
- 21:33Speaker 2: to experience as well. So that not that that cures everything.
- 21:37Speaker 2: It doesn't, but that's probably a situation where he would
- 21:41Speaker 2: not go to any other team not on the CUSP
- 21:45Speaker 2: unless he was at home.
- 21:47Speaker 3: So we'll see, we'll see if that pans out. I mean,
- 21:51Speaker 3: I think the Angels are a team that's in a
- 21:52Speaker 3: big market.
- 21:53Speaker 2: They have Mike Trout, they have you know, top of
- 21:56Speaker 2: the line players, and I think they have They're gonna
- 21:59Speaker 2: be in the position where they're going to be spending
- 22:02Speaker 2: and they are expected to win. Angels fans are not
- 22:04Speaker 2: you know, they were blessed with sho Hey and Trout
- 22:06Speaker 2: and guys to go watch, but they also get criticized
- 22:10Speaker 2: for not winning when they had both of those players.
- 22:12Speaker 2: So I'm assuming that the front office there is going
- 22:14Speaker 2: to want to make that move. They've also brought up
- 22:17Speaker 2: young guys very early, so they're gonna hit their arbitration
- 22:20Speaker 2: windows with some of these guys extremely quick compared to
- 22:23Speaker 2: other young players because of how quick they brought them up.
- 22:25Speaker 2: So I mean, I think they are going to be
- 22:27Speaker 2: in a spot where if they can get the right
- 22:29Speaker 2: couple pieces that the veterans that they think might compliment,
- 22:32Speaker 2: maybe a Nolan Aeronado signifies to another free agent that hey,
- 22:36Speaker 2: we are going to go and try and win here
- 22:38Speaker 2: the next couple of years. We traded for Nolan Aeronado
- 22:40Speaker 2: to fill a role at their base, and he's gonna
- 22:43Speaker 2: make our defense better. And here's how we're going to
- 22:44Speaker 2: get another starting pitcher. Maybe having good defense is a
- 22:48Speaker 2: great way to get started pitching. So you know, I
- 22:51Speaker 2: think I think it could be maybe one of the
- 22:53Speaker 2: dominoes that falls and maybe helps them, you know, take
- 22:56Speaker 2: that step to being ready.
- 22:58Speaker 1: So if you are Nato, are you thinking maybe like
- 23:02Speaker 1: he has a no trade, so you know he has
- 23:05Speaker 1: the power. Maybe if I wait this out, a better
- 23:08Speaker 1: opportunity will present itself in terms of a landing spot.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Because I agree with you, defense is at a premium.
- 23:16Speaker 1: He was outstanding defensively last year. There's that element of
- 23:19Speaker 1: leadership having a veteran around two lance. If you're Nolan,
- 23:24Speaker 1: are you thinking I want to be home or are
- 23:27Speaker 1: you thinking let's wait and see how this plays out.
- 23:31Speaker 4: I think you're looking at the waiting game is going
- 23:34Speaker 4: to be where's Bregman end up? I think that's what
- 23:37Speaker 4: we're waiting on right now. Once Bregman goes somewhere and
- 23:40Speaker 4: you don't like the other fits, then it's do I
- 23:43Speaker 4: say in Saint Louis or do I go home? And
- 23:45Speaker 4: I think that's kind of if it's on the table
- 23:47Speaker 4: to go home, I think that's what he's gonna have
- 23:50Speaker 4: to choose. I think in his mind, you know, I'm
- 23:55Speaker 4: not speaking for him, but if you have a chance
- 23:57Speaker 4: to go home and kind of just kind of regroup,
- 24:01Speaker 4: I think he would rather do that, because all the
- 24:04Speaker 4: writing has been on the wall that he's leaving Saint Louis. Anyways,
- 24:06Speaker 4: this winter, the question is is what big teams are
- 24:11Speaker 4: going or the teams that are quote unquote gonna win,
- 24:14Speaker 4: are gonna go after him? You got Boston? Is Bregman?
- 24:18Speaker 4: Was it Detroit? It's in Bregman's camp? But is Detroit
- 24:21Speaker 4: if they don't get Bregman?
- 24:22Speaker 3: Is that?
- 24:23Speaker 4: Are they that much better than the Angels? I don't know,
- 24:29Speaker 4: because you know, are they gonna be able to keep screwball?
- 24:32Speaker 4: Like there's there's a lot of ifs in baseball, and
- 24:35Speaker 4: if you get a chance to go home, I think
- 24:38Speaker 4: that trump's a lot of things that that that makes
- 24:41Speaker 4: that pros and cons that pro list just automatically with
- 24:45Speaker 4: a big old bull's eye on it. If it's if
- 24:48Speaker 4: it's Angels.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Last thing and Kyle, you bring this up or you
- 24:54Speaker 1: have brought it up a few times, the value of
- 24:56Speaker 1: flipping a player, holding on to him, and then flipping
- 25:00Speaker 1: him before the deadline once the season, you know, as
- 25:03Speaker 1: you get close to the trade deadline, you could get
- 25:05Speaker 1: a haul and return him. By then. You know, maybe
- 25:08Speaker 1: some teams figure they have a bigger need for a
- 25:10Speaker 1: guy like Nolan. Teams headed for the postseason. Maybe that's
- 25:14Speaker 1: where you get the most value, because we haven't seen
- 25:18Speaker 1: any movement on that front to this point.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's interesting.
- 25:22Speaker 2: My question for you guys would be, you know which
- 25:26Speaker 2: camp would you rather be in? Would you rather be
- 25:28Speaker 2: in Bregnant's camp or Aeronauto's camp right now? Because it
- 25:31Speaker 2: seems like you know who who's waiting on who? Here
- 25:34Speaker 2: is Bregnant waiting on aeron Auto getting trades and maybe
- 25:37Speaker 2: he has leverage or is there not a waiting on
- 25:39Speaker 2: Bregnan to be traded.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Or scigned so that he has leverage. I don't know.
- 25:42Speaker 2: That side of it is a little interesting to me,
- 25:45Speaker 2: So we'll kind of see how that shakes out. But yeah,
- 25:48Speaker 2: I mean I think that I think it's always interesting
- 25:53Speaker 2: talking out loud that you want to trade a player
- 25:55Speaker 2: and making it known that he is going to be traded,
- 25:58Speaker 2: because I feel like there is a certain leverage aspect
- 26:01Speaker 2: of that that is diminished a little bit. But at
- 26:05Speaker 2: the end of the day, I'm in the front office
- 26:08Speaker 2: has the ability to say, Nolan, we're keeping your hair,
- 26:12Speaker 2: and you make our team better and we need you
- 26:14Speaker 2: in this locker room, and we'll see if we get
- 26:17Speaker 2: another offer, obviously we'll present it to you, but for
- 26:20Speaker 2: right now, you're our guy and you're going to be here,
- 26:22Speaker 2: so we'll just kind of have to see how that
- 26:25Speaker 2: how that shakes out. But yeah, I mean, I think
- 26:28Speaker 2: any team Nolan is an asset for many different ways,
- 26:31Speaker 2: and if you end up trading him again, you know,
- 26:33Speaker 2: although he probably keeps his no trade, but I think
- 26:36Speaker 2: he's an asset to whatever tav he's on Lamce.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Last question, when the season starts, will Nolan Ornado being
- 26:46Speaker 1: a Cardinal uniform?
- 26:48Speaker 4: I say no. They've been publicly too much about him
- 26:52Speaker 4: being traded. I think for everyone's sake, the Cardinal's sake
- 26:56Speaker 4: and his sake, it's time to find him a place
- 26:59Speaker 4: that he can go and do whatever he needs to
- 27:03Speaker 4: do to finish out his hall of fame career and
- 27:05Speaker 4: also start your rebuild. So that's where I'm at.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Fair enough, gentlemen, I enjoyed the chat this week. That's
- 27:15Speaker 1: going to do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory again.

- 27:23Speaker 1: and if you're youtubing, go ahead and like and subscribe.
- 27:27Speaker 1: We'll see you next time on Cardinal Territory. Hopefully that
- 27:30Speaker 1: edition won't suck
