0:23
Speaker 4: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
0:26
Speaker 4: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, Real Experience,
0:30
Speaker 4: Real Results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
0:34
Speaker 4: begin on Let's Talk.
0:36
Speaker 1: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
0:40
Speaker 1: I have the I got my two co hosts in
0:42
Speaker 1: the building. I look I feel like I am like underdressed,
0:46
Speaker 1: I think compared to the too. I think today it's
0:53
Speaker 1: one of those kind of days that you know in
0:55
Speaker 1: Hollywood when you set the you know, the script. I
0:58
Speaker 1: was like thinking to myself, I was like, man, that's
0:59
Speaker 1: a lot of but we're gonna hit. It's gonna be
1:02
Speaker 1: like a hit and missed kind of deal today that
1:04
Speaker 1: we're just gonna get down. And we also have a
1:08
Speaker 1: guest at the end of the show. The last second
1:10
Speaker 1: half of the show. Just one of those weekends where
1:12
Speaker 1: it's just like so much much. Yeah, so we'll start okay,
1:16
Speaker 1: So as we know, the legislator, we basically sort of
1:20
Speaker 1: exed ourselves out of the whole high school transfer rule
1:23
Speaker 1: here in West Virginia, and the wv SSAC is taking
1:26
Speaker 1: it back over.
1:27
Speaker 2: Now, let me make this clear.
1:29
Speaker 3: The wv SSSC does not necessarily create the rules quote unquote.
1:35
Speaker 3: What they do is they have a committee of principals
1:37
Speaker 3: and ads, so they have like a rules committee. What
1:40
Speaker 3: the rules committee did was they put out of options.
1:43
Speaker 3: So they gave the option to say, we can keep
1:45
Speaker 3: the rule as it is, we can go back to
1:47
Speaker 3: the role rule, or we can create the new rule.
1:50
Speaker 2: Now what the new rule. They went.
1:52
Speaker 3: So they presented the new rule and the principles and
1:55
Speaker 3: the ads throughout the state. They voted on it. So
1:57
Speaker 3: this is what they're gonna go. Moving forward to twenty two,
2:00
Speaker 3: here's what the new rule says. So you get a
2:03
Speaker 3: one time transfer for students in ninth and tenth grade.
2:07
Speaker 3: So you get a mulligan. You get a free shot
2:09
Speaker 3: to go wherever you want. If you're in ninth or
2:11
Speaker 3: tenth grade, you can if you don't like your situation
2:14
Speaker 3: at your school, you get a one time transfer. The
2:17
Speaker 3: deadline of transfer is September first, So as far as
2:21
Speaker 3: mid season transfers. The students transfer after September first, during
2:25
Speaker 3: the active season they are already participating in, they are
2:28
Speaker 3: ineligible for that specific sport for the remainder of the
2:32
Speaker 3: school year. So if you transfer in the middle of
2:34
Speaker 3: football season, you can't play for your new school. You
2:36
Speaker 3: may be able to play basketball or wrestle whatever, you
2:38
Speaker 3: can't play for your new schools NOW transferring back provision
2:42
Speaker 3: A students in ninth, tenth, or eleventh grade may transfer
2:46
Speaker 3: back to their original home school within the parents residential
2:50
Speaker 3: district and they get immediately eligible. So if you transfer out,
2:54
Speaker 3: so if you go from South Charleston to Capitol and
2:57
Speaker 3: then if you're in eleventh grade, you want to come
2:58
Speaker 3: back to South charles so you can come back and
3:01
Speaker 3: you'll be able to play only as the eleventh grade. No, No, No, nine,
3:04
Speaker 3: tenth and eleven, so can transfer out like four and again.
3:08
Speaker 3: So if you even go somewhere I think from eighth
3:10
Speaker 3: grade to ninth grade and then transfer back, that that
3:12
Speaker 3: counts as your transfer. And then you transfer back that
3:14
Speaker 3: counts as the transfer back provision. The last thing is
3:18
Speaker 3: the restriction, So juniors and seniors generally lose immediate eligibility
3:24
Speaker 3: if they move without correspondent change of address, locking them
3:29
Speaker 3: out to prevent exective transfer. So essentially, what that says
3:33
Speaker 3: if somebody, if you're in eleventh grade and you want
3:35
Speaker 3: to do your senior year or the remainder of your
3:38
Speaker 3: eleventh grade year somewhere else, you're gonna lose a year.
3:42
Speaker 3: And obviously if you're going to twelfth grade and you transfer,
3:44
Speaker 3: you'll lose that year. So those are the rules moving
3:48
Speaker 3: forward twenty twenty six.
3:51
Speaker 2: Okay, So.
3:53
Speaker 1: To your knowledge, how are people responding to this or
3:59
Speaker 1: have you had a chance to hear any mumblings? What
4:03
Speaker 1: is your personal thoughts about it? Lisa, And same with
4:07
Speaker 1: you if you have any thoughts about it.
4:09
Speaker 3: And I don't think it's as bad. It's a middle ground,
4:12
Speaker 3: it's kind of it sort of closes the wild wild
4:15
Speaker 3: West by actually making some provisions. And again with all
4:19
Speaker 3: these rules, also there is a like if something happened,
4:22
Speaker 3: if you're bullying or something is going on specific with
4:25
Speaker 3: you during your school, you will have a chance to
4:28
Speaker 3: have an appeal if you're denied. But I think people
4:31
Speaker 3: to at least's point earlier, I don't think I think
4:32
Speaker 3: people read the headlines but didn't necessarily read the rules.
4:35
Speaker 3: So if you look at the rules, this is not
4:38
Speaker 3: a bad it's not the worst thing, and it's going
4:40
Speaker 3: to prevent some maybe kid who has been in the
4:43
Speaker 3: program for all four years, you're coming up on your
4:46
Speaker 3: senior year and then you have another maybe equally situated
4:49
Speaker 3: senior come in and transferring to take your position or
4:52
Speaker 3: something to that effect. So I think that's what some
4:54
Speaker 3: of the consideration was. So I think my opinion, it's
4:58
Speaker 3: a happy medium. It's okay, that's fine.
5:00
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean so basically just ends free agency, so
5:04
Speaker 5: to speak for your juniors and seniors correct essentially, yeah, yeah,
5:07
Speaker 5: So the only the only problem that I think it's
5:11
Speaker 5: a good thing. We do need to rein in what
5:12
Speaker 5: was happening at the high school level, you know, and
5:16
Speaker 5: beyond that, really for collegiate it would be nice if
5:18
Speaker 5: we had that similar rules. But but the only rule
5:22
Speaker 5: that kind of baffled me, and maybe you guys can
5:24
Speaker 5: help me understand why they would do this. But why
5:27
Speaker 5: do they have to move by early September? Why would
5:29
Speaker 5: they have set a date on.
5:31
Speaker 3: That, Well, it's always been a day currently, like it's
5:34
Speaker 3: in June or July, So that's under the current rules
5:37
Speaker 3: form a rule.
5:37
Speaker 5: So they get more time. Actually they get a little
5:39
Speaker 5: bit more time. Okay, yeah, okay, that makes sense.
5:41
Speaker 1: Now are they getting okay, are they getting more time?
5:45
Speaker 1: But if I'm the coach, I'm getting less time in
5:49
Speaker 1: quote a replacement of that player?
5:52
Speaker 2: Is that? What would you not? I wouldn't say that.
5:55
Speaker 3: I mean, if you're a football player and you got
5:57
Speaker 3: some kid who try I mean, I guess you could
5:59
Speaker 3: look at like, if you're basketball more the the you know,
6:02
Speaker 3: the in school type of sports, then this really doesn't
6:05
Speaker 3: affect you that time period necessarily if you're football.
6:07
Speaker 2: Obviously we start practicing in the summer.
6:10
Speaker 1: So maybe I'm going to ask both of you all
6:15
Speaker 1: this question. When you think about when you think about
6:20
Speaker 1: the transfer rule and you and and based on your
6:24
Speaker 1: your own individual thought process of your child, would you
6:33
Speaker 1: what would it take for you to decide to want
6:36
Speaker 1: to create or put yourself in a situation to transfer
6:41
Speaker 1: your child or if your child came to you and said, dad, mom,
6:46
Speaker 1: I want to transfer. What would be your thought process
6:50
Speaker 1: when you first hear that? And and what what do
6:53
Speaker 1: you how do you think you would handle that?
6:56
Speaker 3: My I guess to answer your question, I would thing
7:00
Speaker 3: probably along two paths. I think one, if you're just
7:03
Speaker 3: if this if our program just isn't up the par
7:07
Speaker 3: so for example, and no shout out to anybody, for
7:10
Speaker 3: one of my girls is playing basketball and we have,
7:13
Speaker 3: like you know, the science teacher out there. Now, the
7:17
Speaker 3: science teacher is not a basketball coach. They just they
7:19
Speaker 3: didn't want to see the team collapse because nobody wanted
7:23
Speaker 3: the job. So now they're just kind of out there
7:25
Speaker 3: just to help the kids, but they're not necessarily a coach.
7:29
Speaker 3: So if I have a situation like that, or if
7:32
Speaker 3: there's something else going on to what I would think
7:35
Speaker 3: that my child is being discriminated against, or or they're
7:38
Speaker 3: being bullied, or they're just in a not in a
7:41
Speaker 3: in an environment that's again I'm all for tough environments,
7:44
Speaker 3: but I'm just like a toxic environment where it's just
7:47
Speaker 3: you know, it's not it's not it's not going to
7:50
Speaker 3: do anything for their development.
7:51
Speaker 5: So those are my two certain I totally agree with
7:53
Speaker 5: what Hollis just said. And you know, there should be
7:56
Speaker 5: some kind of underlying factor of why your child is
7:59
Speaker 5: coming to you and asking for a transfer and and
8:01
Speaker 5: your job as as a parent is to get to
8:03
Speaker 5: the bottom of it. And you know, it could be
8:05
Speaker 5: an emotional like you said, an emotional trauma going on
8:08
Speaker 5: with another student or another student athlete on the team
8:12
Speaker 5: that you know they're being bullied or they're they're not
8:14
Speaker 5: comfortable playing with that athlete. Maybe the coach is, like
8:17
Speaker 5: you said, not qualified to do. We know that happens
8:21
Speaker 5: a lot in in you know, school districts because of
8:23
Speaker 5: the shortage of teachers and people willing to coach. But
8:27
Speaker 5: you know, I think if if your child comes to
8:30
Speaker 5: you and says, you know, this is this is what
8:32
Speaker 5: I want. As a parent, it's your job to explore
8:36
Speaker 5: why they want it.
8:37
Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, Oh no, he's gonna.
8:42
Speaker 2: Okay in in part in part I think that I can.
8:49
Speaker 1: I can roll with both of you to a degree.
8:55
Speaker 1: What if my son comes to me and and he
9:00
Speaker 1: is in a situation to where they're not winning, and
9:06
Speaker 1: he and the team says call contacts him, says hey,
9:10
Speaker 1: look you can come over here. You'll be you'll be
9:12
Speaker 1: a starter over here, and we're winning. My kid's not leaving.
9:18
Speaker 1: But we didn't say no. I didn't say I didn't know.
9:21
Speaker 1: I didn't say I didn't say that. You said that,
9:23
Speaker 1: I'm just saying for me, I'm not allowing my son
9:28
Speaker 1: to leave because because you're losing.
9:31
Speaker 2: I argue, no, you didn't know.
9:34
Speaker 1: But but but in my mindset, I think there's a
9:38
Speaker 1: lot of people who had whose child is pretty good,
9:45
Speaker 1: maybe good, maybe really good, and they're on a team
9:49
Speaker 1: that's not necessarily winning, and that he or she may
9:52
Speaker 1: be the only player that's there, and you realize that
9:56
Speaker 1: your future is not going to be.
10:00
Speaker 2: Anywhere for you to be a champion. To me, I
10:05
Speaker 2: have I don't see sports.
10:08
Speaker 1: I don't see you sports like like that that you
10:14
Speaker 1: that there has to be the star you your kid
10:16
Speaker 1: has to be the star your kid.
10:18
Speaker 3: And I'm not saying that you are. I would disagree
10:21
Speaker 3: with that point. I think a lot of people are
10:22
Speaker 3: are are. I don't think that's the reason why a
10:25
Speaker 3: lot of people are leaving. I think people are leaving
10:27
Speaker 3: because they're deeming this program better. I think the kids
10:31
Speaker 3: who are are leaving to win are in the minority.
10:34
Speaker 3: I don't believe.
10:35
Speaker 5: I believe they're going to the better, better program.
10:39
Speaker 2: I think that's why kids leave.
10:41
Speaker 1: Okay, and our parents Okay, yeah, yeah, I'll even challenge thath,
10:47
Speaker 1: what are you gonna do when they get a job
10:48
Speaker 1: and they don't have to quote the perfect boss to
10:52
Speaker 1: to work with them.
10:53
Speaker 2: But I believe the.
10:55
Speaker 6: Company and see, and I think my problem, my my
11:00
Speaker 6: SoC problem, My sole problem with this is that I'm
11:06
Speaker 6: old school enough to to the point to where my
11:11
Speaker 6: dad would have My dad would have my dad taught
11:13
Speaker 6: me that there are there's adversity that you have to
11:17
Speaker 6: go through and if you if you can, if you
11:21
Speaker 6: can withstand that and produce, that's gonna put you in
11:25
Speaker 6: a situation to be a better plerk person, better athlete,
11:30
Speaker 6: such and such and all those kinds of things.
11:31
Speaker 1: And I just and I'm sorry it worked for me,
11:35
Speaker 1: and I'm not saying that it's supposed to work for everybody,
11:38
Speaker 1: But I just I don't know how to do.
11:40
Speaker 2: I don't know how to go past.
11:41
Speaker 3: But I also think you were in a situation where
11:43
Speaker 3: you didn't have the luxury of looking around, so you
11:45
Speaker 3: took that advice that he gave you, or took those
11:48
Speaker 3: lessons that he gave you, and you had to like
11:49
Speaker 3: swallow that holistically. You didn't get a chance to like
11:53
Speaker 3: be on the internet. And I'm looking at what all
11:55
Speaker 3: these other cool programs are doing. You just didn't have that.
11:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that that could have been a challenge,
11:59
Speaker 1: that have been a challenge for me, and maybe I
12:03
Speaker 1: could have easily thought to want to move.
12:05
Speaker 5: Yeah, And I was just going to say, sometimes losing
12:08
Speaker 5: coincides with not not just players that you know aren't
12:13
Speaker 5: or athletically able to do what other players are doing.
12:18
Speaker 5: It could go with bad coaching and so you know,
12:20
Speaker 5: sometimes it looks like they may be leaving because the
12:23
Speaker 5: team is losing games, but it could really, you know,
12:27
Speaker 5: actually be the fact that the coach is just there's
12:29
Speaker 5: a better coach down the street at a different school.
12:32
Speaker 2: So yeah.
12:33
Speaker 3: And also speaking of transfer, so President Trump he issued
12:37
Speaker 3: an executive order for a nc DOUAA transfer rule. So basically,
12:42
Speaker 3: again we got to take this with a grain of salt.
12:45
Speaker 3: There's been a lot of talk because this probably is
12:47
Speaker 3: not going to be cut the you know, constitutional mustard.
12:51
Speaker 3: But these are the things that he laid out in
12:53
Speaker 3: the transfer in his executive order, So he limited the trends.
12:57
Speaker 3: You get one free transfer. You have posed a five
13:00
Speaker 3: year eligibility windows, so you have five years to complete
13:04
Speaker 3: your your athletic you know, sport so you get like
13:08
Speaker 3: we've seen some players now been seven to eight years
13:10
Speaker 3: in college. He directs the n c double A to
13:13
Speaker 3: create new transfer rules, so he put the pressure on them.
13:18
Speaker 3: Compliance with the executive order is gonna be tied to
13:21
Speaker 3: federal funding. Basically, he reduced the free movement of athletes, again,
13:26
Speaker 3: limited the frequency of transfer, and basically restore roster stability,
13:31
Speaker 3: coordinated federal oversight of the transfer related issue. So basically
13:36
Speaker 3: he wants to get the Department of Justice, get Department
13:40
Speaker 3: of Education evolved. He's going to create a registry for agents.
13:47
Speaker 3: He's going to pair transfer limits with broader eligibility reforms,
13:50
Speaker 3: so getting a five year cap restriction on professionalized participation.
13:56
Speaker 3: That means like we've seen, like the G League, pro
13:58
Speaker 3: basketball players like coming back to college. So I guess
14:00
Speaker 3: he would try to mix that and he would push
14:03
Speaker 3: Congress for a formalized rules. So basically, again, just get
14:06
Speaker 3: the federal government involved. Now, again, a lot of athletic
14:11
Speaker 3: directors and people in the know don't think this is
14:13
Speaker 3: going to go anywhere. They think it's going to be
14:15
Speaker 3: challenged in the Supreme Court would basically shoot it down,
14:17
Speaker 3: which I tend.
14:18
Speaker 2: To agree with, but just what do you guys? Start
14:21
Speaker 2: with you, Lisa, what do you think of.
14:23
Speaker 5: The I mean, the name of the whole act, And
14:27
Speaker 5: I have to I have to read it off because
14:29
Speaker 5: it kind of was like it sounds so dramatic but
14:31
Speaker 5: urgent national action to save college sports. I'm like, okay,
14:37
Speaker 5: I mean that that part's kind of like whoa you know.
14:40
Speaker 5: I mean, like you said, Hollis, it's an executive order.
14:44
Speaker 5: It's not a law, and so we have to see
14:46
Speaker 5: whether or not it stands up, you know, in a
14:48
Speaker 5: court of law. But here's my problem with it. If
14:50
Speaker 5: we're going to limit player mobility while we allow the
14:54
Speaker 5: college coaches to move freely, is I mean, that's a problem,
14:58
Speaker 5: isn't it.
14:58
Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, and I have, But again I have
15:01
Speaker 3: the problems I have with this are probably beyond the
15:04
Speaker 3: scope or what I want to talk about on this
15:06
Speaker 3: fun show. So I have some real, real, real problems
15:10
Speaker 3: with this, I think, you know, but let me go
15:14
Speaker 3: to the positive. I'll do the positive now. I think
15:17
Speaker 3: the five year window is probably a good thing.
15:19
Speaker 2: You know.
15:20
Speaker 3: I don't necessarily have a problem that no five years
15:25
Speaker 3: to play four just like it used to be, you know,
15:28
Speaker 3: absent of somebody getting hurt or something like that. Now
15:32
Speaker 3: it being tied the federal fund, and that's just that's
15:34
Speaker 3: not gonna pass. Uster, Congress getting involved, stop it. We
15:38
Speaker 3: don't want that. But I think all in all, I think,
15:42
Speaker 3: you know, to your point, Lisa, I think we have
15:46
Speaker 3: to We can't police players in this money environment when
15:51
Speaker 3: we had we're not willing to police coaching. We can't believe,
15:54
Speaker 3: we talked a couple of weeks ago, we had delicate
15:56
Speaker 3: flu hardy on here. We know the money that's coming in,
15:59
Speaker 3: not only from alcohol, not only from ticket sales. I mean,
16:02
Speaker 3: what were some of the final for in n C
16:04
Speaker 3: Double A tickets. They're like thousands of dollars from you know,
16:07
Speaker 3: gambling gaming sites, every other commercial. So you know, we
16:12
Speaker 3: don't want to limit how these young men are are
16:15
Speaker 3: are getting paid. However, I think in the you know,
16:19
Speaker 3: in order to you know, keep the sanctity of what
16:23
Speaker 3: we you know, romanticize of college sports, we have to
16:27
Speaker 3: do something because again, if you look at the two
16:30
Speaker 3: n C Double A champions and the major men's sports,
16:32
Speaker 3: you look at Indiana and you look at Michigan, Michigan's
16:37
Speaker 3: entire starting file for transfers, entire They came from somewhere else.
16:42
Speaker 2: I think this was what their first year here. Yeah,
16:44
Speaker 2: I think so.
16:44
Speaker 5: And you saw that the women's coach from Tennessee lost
16:47
Speaker 5: every single player. She has zero returning players.
16:51
Speaker 2: From West Virginia too, so coach to Glenman won a.
16:53
Speaker 5: National I mean, and they were in the they went
16:55
Speaker 5: pretty far in the NC Double A tournament. So I
16:58
Speaker 5: mean it goes both ways. I mean, Nick can drain
17:00
Speaker 5: you or it can make you. You know, it can
17:02
Speaker 5: do either.
17:04
Speaker 1: Well, my when I think, when I think about this,
17:07
Speaker 1: and you and and and I see it from all
17:10
Speaker 1: of the and I look at it from all of
17:12
Speaker 1: the negative sides of it, because I think that's the
17:16
Speaker 1: chance that it could take place.
17:21
Speaker 2: I don't. I don't. I don't see how.
17:25
Speaker 1: I don't see why there's an opportunity to transfer, like why, okay,
17:33
Speaker 1: pick a school and and in STAYCA.
17:38
Speaker 2: But it's not it's not that I do.
17:43
Speaker 7: Though.
17:43
Speaker 2: Do you think it's it's okay? Do you think it's no?
17:49
Speaker 1: The one thing that I don't one thing that I
17:51
Speaker 1: don't want to have happen is I don't want it
17:53
Speaker 1: to become a political thing. I don't want to I
17:56
Speaker 1: definitely don't want to.
17:59
Speaker 5: Politics are hard hard enough without anything.
18:01
Speaker 1: You don't need to put your hands in there because
18:05
Speaker 1: I don't even know if you know enough about it.
18:08
Speaker 1: You know, you're just you're just jumping in and and
18:11
Speaker 1: and and doing things.
18:13
Speaker 2: I just I don't know. I just wish it could.
18:15
Speaker 1: I just wish there was a way to get back
18:18
Speaker 1: to old school playing that you you know, you pick
18:21
Speaker 1: a school, you play for that school, and you're done,
18:23
Speaker 1: and you.
18:23
Speaker 2: Know, I just I just that's just how I I
18:26
Speaker 2: just don't know how to change my mind on I
18:31
Speaker 2: think one of the coaches and I think, uh, what's
18:34
Speaker 2: my guy's name? I can't remember.
18:36
Speaker 3: Cal Perry cal part Am I saying it right, He
18:41
Speaker 3: was saying something that I thought was Again I don't
18:43
Speaker 3: necessarily agree with his perspective all of it anyway, but
18:47
Speaker 3: he did say something that I thought was critical, Like, right,
18:51
Speaker 3: like most of these guys, you're not going to either
18:54
Speaker 3: have a long career. And again, basketball is a little
18:56
Speaker 3: different because you have so many opportunities, but you're not
18:58
Speaker 3: going to have a long career or eventually that career
19:01
Speaker 3: is going to end. So you have that your highest
19:03
Speaker 3: potential earning your earning potential like when you're in your
19:06
Speaker 3: twenties and early thirties, and then from there it's just
19:08
Speaker 3: going the level off. So if you're in and if
19:11
Speaker 3: you're not at a school for four years or three
19:15
Speaker 3: years or two years, and you don't get to develop
19:17
Speaker 3: those relationships, then those job opportunities, those that that notoriety
19:23
Speaker 3: in the community is not going to be there.
19:25
Speaker 2: Right.
19:25
Speaker 3: So if you're at a school, if you're at a Marshall, WV.
19:28
Speaker 3: And I spent four years there and I'm a legend
19:30
Speaker 3: and I'm a starter, You're always gonna be able to
19:32
Speaker 3: make a living. Major Harris is never gonna be broken
19:34
Speaker 3: West Virginia never ever ever, right, right? And with the transfer,
19:39
Speaker 3: you going to like this kids literally going to like
19:41
Speaker 3: five different schools.
19:42
Speaker 1: You're not developing relationships, no, anybody, no. And I don't
19:46
Speaker 1: understand why that's not clear. You're you're you're changing because
19:51
Speaker 1: you what you want to.
19:52
Speaker 3: Me chasing you're chasing money or you're playing time zone
19:57
Speaker 3: or something.
19:57
Speaker 2: You know.
19:58
Speaker 1: And but two and I like that Hollins because the
20:02
Speaker 1: reality of trying to be a star on four different
20:07
Speaker 1: teams in five years, how do you I mean, you
20:13
Speaker 1: you better have been a super superstar coming out, and
20:17
Speaker 1: as you keep moving, they're only going to be talking
20:20
Speaker 1: about you because you're moving and not any of the
20:23
Speaker 1: no yards, no tackles, no intercess, They're just talking about
20:28
Speaker 1: you leaving.
20:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think in this day and age, I
20:30
Speaker 5: think fans want like, you know, the good old days,
20:34
Speaker 5: whenever you could name all the players on your team
20:37
Speaker 5: every year because they were returning and and people respect that.
20:42
Speaker 5: And whenever you're you know, it's a it's a constant
20:44
Speaker 5: influx and outflux of players and coaches, and it's just
20:48
Speaker 5: it just makes the game. It doesn't even feel like
20:51
Speaker 5: it's your alma mater and your school, you know what
20:54
Speaker 5: I mean. Like there's no legend, there's no legends. Yeah,
20:57
Speaker 5: like there there there won't be another major hairs if
20:59
Speaker 5: we can't keep somebody there for more than a year.
21:02
Speaker 3: And West Virginia so we got we had a West
21:05
Speaker 3: Virginia had a big weekend the state. So our Marshall's
21:10
Speaker 3: women's basketball team won the n i T YEP and
21:13
Speaker 3: the men's basketball team won the New Crown Basketball Championship.
21:17
Speaker 3: So it's kind of like what the c I T
21:19
Speaker 3: was back in the day. It's the sort of the
21:21
Speaker 3: third tier tournament. What the responses, reactions. I thought it
21:26
Speaker 3: was a good thing. I thought it was great.
21:28
Speaker 1: I love the idea of and and and some people
21:31
Speaker 1: will will try to make the case that it wasn't this,
21:34
Speaker 1: It wasn't that. You win a championship. I don't care
21:38
Speaker 1: what it's called. I don't care what the level is.
21:40
Speaker 1: To me, that's a championship. That's a title. That's something
21:44
Speaker 1: that you can hold with you forever.
21:47
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
21:48
Speaker 1: And and for me, I think we have to look
21:52
Speaker 1: at it when I say we we in West Virginia.
21:55
Speaker 1: You got you got two major universities that are winning.
21:59
Speaker 2: Yeah.
21:59
Speaker 5: Yeah, you've got to be proud of that.
22:01
Speaker 2: Got to be proud.
22:02
Speaker 5: And the way they did it, I mean both both teams.
22:04
Speaker 5: I mean that the men. Of course, there's was an
22:06
Speaker 5: OT thriller. I mean they won eighty nine to eighty two,
22:09
Speaker 5: but they started down six points in OT and I
22:11
Speaker 5: think we were even texting in our thread and I
22:14
Speaker 5: was like, I'm going to bed. They're going to lose.
22:17
Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, And of course Jerry stayed up and was like,
22:20
Speaker 5: you missed a good game. But anyway, yeah, really good.
22:22
Speaker 5: So that was and you know the way Honor Huff played,
22:25
Speaker 5: I mean, he he was unbelievable. He had like a
22:28
Speaker 5: career high I think I read thirty eight points and
22:31
Speaker 5: eight three pointers. So he was just unstoppable in that game.
22:34
Speaker 3: And and it's an opportunity for the show out to
22:37
Speaker 3: try to get that draft pick. One of them kids
22:39
Speaker 3: is going to get drafted from the tournament. To me,
22:42
Speaker 3: I agree with you. I don't know how you can't.
22:45
Speaker 3: I don't know how you can pass on on some
22:49
Speaker 3: of those kids. When you see that play, Yeah, I
22:52
Speaker 3: mean that's I mean, that's that's.
22:53
Speaker 5: Special, and it kind of gives us some hope for
22:56
Speaker 5: for the whole program because you know, this is Ross Hodges,
22:59
Speaker 5: their head coach. This is this first year up there,
23:02
Speaker 5: and so you know, to to win a tournament championship,
23:04
Speaker 5: regardless of the level, even if it's not in C
23:06
Speaker 5: double A, I mean that that's pretty impressive.
23:09
Speaker 3: I'm glad they didn't and this yeah me too. So
23:11
Speaker 3: we got two other championships games. So we had the
23:14
Speaker 3: men's n C Double A championship game and the women's
23:16
Speaker 3: n C Double A championship game. We'll start with the
23:18
Speaker 3: women's UH now again Prior to that, we had the
23:21
Speaker 3: whole thing with Gino and Don Staley's different things of
23:25
Speaker 3: that nature.
23:25
Speaker 2: They were kind of going at it. But uh, you
23:28
Speaker 2: know again, the women's.
23:29
Speaker 3: Game, the championship game was actually it was kind of
23:31
Speaker 3: like it was, It wasn't kind of it was lackluster
23:34
Speaker 3: to say the least.
23:35
Speaker 2: You said, U c LA dominated.
23:37
Speaker 3: And what I've just my analysis from both championship games
23:41
Speaker 3: men and women, is that if you have a skilled
23:43
Speaker 3: big who can play in the paint, play outside the paint,
23:47
Speaker 3: play with the back to the basket, and and potentially
23:50
Speaker 3: take you off the dribble, you are in trouble in
23:53
Speaker 3: college basketball. Because the young lady from UCLA, I mean,
23:56
Speaker 3: she just dominated defensively, she dominated offensively.
24:00
Speaker 2: She was just a force.
24:01
Speaker 5: I mean it was a what twenty eight point blowout,
24:03
Speaker 5: I mean it was. It was never close, and they
24:06
Speaker 5: kept them completely game. Cocks were completely out of that
24:08
Speaker 5: game the.
24:09
Speaker 2: Whole way back in the day.
24:11
Speaker 1: When somebody like that, when they're that tall and quote
24:14
Speaker 1: the center, if they're out, they're out pasting a three
24:18
Speaker 1: point line.
24:19
Speaker 2: You ain't covering it. But man, you can't. You can't
24:22
Speaker 2: do that now.
24:23
Speaker 3: And I'm glad. Defensively, she was just a wrecking ball.
24:27
Speaker 3: I mean you couldn't bring anything in the paint she was.
24:30
Speaker 3: She was all over it.
24:31
Speaker 5: And you know that was UCLA's first title since seventy eight,
24:35
Speaker 5: nineteen seventy eight, So I mean that's you know they're celebrating.
24:38
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's school.
24:39
Speaker 3: And in the men's game again, same thing. I mean,
24:42
Speaker 3: Michigan was just too big, too athletic. You had to
24:46
Speaker 3: I believe the kid was from Spain. I mean he
24:49
Speaker 3: was dominating and again my type of basketball, good old
24:53
Speaker 3: American staff.
24:55
Speaker 5: He did pick Michigan the last podcast when I remember
24:59
Speaker 5: that when I all the game.
25:01
Speaker 2: Good old American basketball. They were rough.
25:03
Speaker 3: They were taking it, uh you know, Connecticut, to their credit,
25:07
Speaker 3: they're taking it to the rack. I mean they couldn't
25:08
Speaker 3: really get around the big guy. But it was it
25:11
Speaker 3: was a good, scrappy game.
25:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, they did not pick Michigan.
25:14
Speaker 5: No, I think they were with me to pick. We
25:18
Speaker 5: both picked Yukon. I think we said, didn't.
25:21
Speaker 3: Maybe you get out.
25:22
Speaker 5: Yeah, well I'm always the loser in this in this
25:27
Speaker 5: little game we played in the podcast.
25:31
Speaker 2: That one, I think I took Michigan. I think I
25:33
Speaker 2: went with allis well, I.
25:34
Speaker 5: Did read Michigan's defense locked, uh, you know, held Yukon
25:37
Speaker 5: to like thirty point nine percent shooting. I mean that's
25:41
Speaker 5: that's that's really good defense.
25:43
Speaker 2: Yeah and shooting.
25:45
Speaker 3: Yeah they could yeah it try to take it to
25:49
Speaker 3: the rack, but they just they couldn't do anything.
25:50
Speaker 5: I think they were drained. I mean they had a
25:52
Speaker 5: lot of close games. Michigan didn't really have a did
25:56
Speaker 5: they have a close game?
25:57
Speaker 3: They had a couple, but not not. They didn't have
25:59
Speaker 3: a game that that Yukon had playing and everything.
26:03
Speaker 1: And to your point, I just want to say this,
26:06
Speaker 1: like I think when you're when you start, when you
26:09
Speaker 1: get into the like tournaments and you're got you got
26:11
Speaker 1: games back to back, that's that's tough, you know, and
26:16
Speaker 1: you've got to be able to maintain your shot getting
26:22
Speaker 1: up and down the court. Man that I think that
26:24
Speaker 1: is legs are getting tired. I mean, you gotta get rest.
26:28
Speaker 1: I mean that's a that's a huge challenge. All Right,
26:32
Speaker 1: We're gonna take a quick break and we will be
26:34
Speaker 1: right back.

27:29
Speaker 1: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back and we
27:31
Speaker 1: are we have a great guest here today. Hollis is
27:35
Speaker 1: gonna give the introduction and we'll go from there.
27:37
Speaker 2: Yes, we do.
27:38
Speaker 3: We have doctor Brian monte Leone. I hope I got
27:41
Speaker 3: that correct. He is a sports psychologist in the Charlotte area.
27:45
Speaker 3: He's works with NBA, NFL professional sports down to the
27:49
Speaker 3: high school level athletes.
27:51
Speaker 2: How are you doing today, Doc.
27:53
Speaker 8: I'm doing fantastic. How are you guys doing good? Great?
27:56
Speaker 2: Thanks.
27:56
Speaker 3: Now, one of the things that we've often talked about
27:59
Speaker 3: on this show, and unfortunately here in West Virginia, I
28:01
Speaker 3: do not believe we have at least an active sports
28:04
Speaker 3: psychologist within the state who specializes or is that's part
28:07
Speaker 3: of their practice. But one of the things that we've
28:10
Speaker 3: often talked about is that, you know, mental health and
28:14
Speaker 3: sports and particularly how you know athletes mental health is
28:19
Speaker 3: affected post their career. And we've seen this, you know,
28:23
Speaker 3: at the high school level. Somebody was a great high
28:24
Speaker 3: school athlete, it doesn't work out in college, and they
28:27
Speaker 3: kind of struggle all the way up to the professional ranks,
28:30
Speaker 3: where we have, you know, guys who've achieved great things
28:33
Speaker 3: and then after that career they seem to go downhill.
28:36
Speaker 3: So from a professional and a clinical standpoint, can you
28:39
Speaker 3: just give us like just sort of a perspective on that.
28:43
Speaker 8: Yeah, I talk I talk about that with my athletes
28:45
Speaker 8: at every level, but fortunate enough to work with with
28:50
Speaker 8: pro athletes. But I'll start at the high school level.
28:54
Speaker 8: These guys a lot of times are really you know,
28:57
Speaker 8: passionate about their sport, their iheard men and women that
29:03
Speaker 8: are very devoted to their sport, and you know a
29:06
Speaker 8: lot of times they hope they can continue, but when
29:09
Speaker 8: they don't, you know, there's a transition sometimes about what
29:12
Speaker 8: it's like not to be an athlete and kind of
29:15
Speaker 8: you know, how to develop some extracurricular activities and things
29:19
Speaker 8: that they sacrifice playing sports. Particularly if you played multiple
29:23
Speaker 8: sports in high school, you're pretty busy, right, And so
29:27
Speaker 8: that's one of the things that we talk about, is
29:29
Speaker 8: how do we develop this entering college, you know, and
29:33
Speaker 8: how to begin to find some interest so you can
29:36
Speaker 8: enjoy college and have a great time and be successful
29:39
Speaker 8: and move on with life. College level a little bit different,
29:43
Speaker 8: you know, as a former college athlete myself, I mean,
29:46
Speaker 8: you know, we always want to play pro right, everything
29:49
Speaker 8: person that I've worked with, it's all about, hey, I
29:52
Speaker 8: want to get to the next level. Not everybody is
29:54
Speaker 8: that lucky or talented, right, But that reality, it becomes
30:00
Speaker 8: a little bit more of a difficult conversation. I Mean,
30:04
Speaker 8: we talk a lot about issues with stress and pressure,
30:08
Speaker 8: confidence anxiety, performance anxiety, what to do when you have
30:14
Speaker 8: a slump. You know, if you're a baseball player and
30:17
Speaker 8: you're one for twelve, you know, and you're only playing.
30:20
Speaker 8: What if it's not games or whatever it is like
30:22
Speaker 8: that hurts doubts they're watching. So sometimes it works out
30:29
Speaker 8: for him, sometimes it doesn't. And I see more anxiety
30:34
Speaker 8: and depression and identity issues with my college athletes than
30:38
Speaker 8: I do my high school athletes. Now, my experience in
30:43
Speaker 8: the pros is a little bit different. Their dedication is
30:49
Speaker 8: like no other. And Carl, I know you're an ex
30:52
Speaker 8: NFL guy, and you probably know that better than anybody,
30:55
Speaker 8: but the ones that I've worked with at the NBA level,
30:59
Speaker 8: Major League Baseball Tour, that is a very difficult thing
31:02
Speaker 8: because you are all in. This is your livelihood. You
31:05
Speaker 8: are a professional athlete. The women on the Women's Tour,
31:11
Speaker 8: same thing. They're all in. Everything is about that and
31:14
Speaker 8: they have to be to performance highest level. But when
31:17
Speaker 8: it's done, there's a tremendous transition. There are all kinds
31:24
Speaker 8: of identity issues. We talk about who am I now?
31:27
Speaker 8: If I am not this person, if I am not
31:31
Speaker 8: in front of the crowd, I don't hear sixteen thousand cheering,
31:35
Speaker 8: What do I do if don't ask me for my autograph?
31:38
Speaker 8: I'm just a regular schmo down a cruise and through Starbucks,
31:42
Speaker 8: and you know, I'm under the radar. People are used
31:47
Speaker 8: to pampering me as a professional athlete.
31:52
Speaker 1: And let me say something to that point, I think,
31:55
Speaker 1: I think for the professional athlete, I think the hardest
32:00
Speaker 1: part of that is somewhat the recognition. But what comes
32:06
Speaker 1: with that recognition when you're playing.
32:10
Speaker 2: And when you get done, there's an expectation.
32:14
Speaker 1: I think for certain certain types of players, I don't
32:18
Speaker 1: have an adjective to give them, but that there there's
32:22
Speaker 1: an expectation that they they belong, they should, you should
32:27
Speaker 1: give me this, you should do these kind of things
32:29
Speaker 1: for me. And sometimes it's that guy that was maybe
32:33
Speaker 1: just below great, maybe just good, that guy.
32:40
Speaker 2: That's in the middle.
32:41
Speaker 1: It's almost as if he is trying to get the
32:47
Speaker 1: greatest part of his career when it's done.
32:52
Speaker 2: Have you have you seen it that way?
32:53
Speaker 8: Like the guy who is like I want to maximize
32:57
Speaker 8: my name.
32:58
Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, yes, I see that with a lot
33:02
Speaker 1: of guys.
33:06
Speaker 2: Go ahead, I'm sorry, go ahead.
33:07
Speaker 1: I was just gonna say I see that with a
33:09
Speaker 1: lot of guys. That happened all the time. And and
33:15
Speaker 1: you know we're sitting there talking about him, like, man,
33:18
Speaker 1: what's why is he tripping like, But I guess there's
33:20
Speaker 1: the actual real issue there.
33:25
Speaker 8: Oh yeah, of course there is, because we're trying to
33:27
Speaker 8: hold on to this identity as a as a as
33:29
Speaker 8: a pro athlete, as a star, as a as an
33:32
Speaker 8: almost big star maybe you know, to be recognized. I
33:35
Speaker 8: mean that strokes the ego pretty pretty solidly. And what
33:39
Speaker 8: I see is, you know, some of these guys are
33:42
Speaker 8: trying to get into this business. That business. You know,
33:44
Speaker 8: podcasts are hot, right people, all I'm gonna do a
33:48
Speaker 8: podcasts on this podcast on that and so whatever the
33:52
Speaker 8: hot thing is. But that identity, that ego. You know,
33:57
Speaker 8: I'm sure somebody's in there here talking about we need
33:59
Speaker 8: to maximize your name and your dollar. Why we can
34:03
Speaker 8: for those guys that that's flying under the radar. Not
34:06
Speaker 8: everybody's a Randy Moss where you know the look, the name,
34:11
Speaker 8: you see him, you know who it is, right. There
34:13
Speaker 8: are a lot of guys that from the you know,
34:15
Speaker 8: in the NFL, major League Baseball, you walk right by
34:18
Speaker 8: him and if you're not you know, really into that
34:21
Speaker 8: team or followed him or that, you don't know who
34:23
Speaker 8: that is. And maximizing it is important.
34:28
Speaker 1: We actually have some golf on and which makes me
34:31
Speaker 1: think of Tiger Woods. What is when you when you
34:34
Speaker 1: think about him, what you're seeing in him? Now, where
34:38
Speaker 1: do you think he Where do you think he is?
34:43
Speaker 2: Well?
34:43
Speaker 8: I think he's imploding, to be honest with him, which
34:46
Speaker 8: concerns me. I mean, I think that Tiger is one
34:50
Speaker 8: of those once in a generational lifetime. I think Michael
34:56
Speaker 8: Jordan may be another guy that we can put up there,
34:59
Speaker 8: but us so immensely blessed with talent and success, the
35:03
Speaker 8: hard work and paid off. He was at the pinnacle,
35:06
Speaker 8: and he imploded slowly but surely in just unbelievable ways.
35:14
Speaker 8: And I think part of what we're seeing, because I've
35:17
Speaker 8: had several people ask me about this recently, I think
35:21
Speaker 8: part of it is he's in so much pain that
35:25
Speaker 8: his judgment is influenced by the things he's putting in
35:28
Speaker 8: his body. Other people have asked me why in the
35:32
Speaker 8: heck is he driving? Because he's in control. He's a
35:36
Speaker 8: control guy. He's always been a control guy. That's that's
35:40
Speaker 8: what was a huge part of his success. So giving
35:43
Speaker 8: that up is not easy. You know, my grandfather lived
35:47
Speaker 8: in ninety five years old and he drove till he
35:51
Speaker 8: was ninety five years old. It was frightening, but he
35:57
Speaker 8: did so. Tiger's you know, Tiger's used to be in control.
36:01
Speaker 8: He's used to writing that narrative. But I don't think
36:05
Speaker 8: he's thinking clearly. And I think he is in a
36:07
Speaker 8: tremendous amount of pain. And I think by not competing,
36:12
Speaker 8: he is all out of source. I think the tg
36:16
Speaker 8: L was great for him. Uh, to see him compete
36:20
Speaker 8: in the championship. I knew for sure he was going
36:23
Speaker 8: to play the Masters, and then he had the car accident. Yeah,
36:28
Speaker 8: you know, and that's a heck of a blow. Always
36:31
Speaker 8: been a Tiger fan. I hope for speedy recovery and
36:35
Speaker 8: from the mental side, the emotional side and the physical
36:38
Speaker 8: pain side for him as quick as possible, but very
36:41
Speaker 8: difficult when you're on top like that.
36:44
Speaker 5: Hello, doctor, this is This is Lisa Odie. I'm one
36:47
Speaker 5: of the hosts here on the on the podcast. Thank
36:48
Speaker 5: you so much for for coming on tonight. I'm gonna
36:51
Speaker 5: I'm gonna change change gears a little bit here. So
36:55
Speaker 5: we've all watched, you know, a game, whether it would
36:57
Speaker 5: be you know, basketball, football, whatever sport it is is,
37:00
Speaker 5: and we've seen an athlete make a huge mistake that
37:05
Speaker 5: probably you know, sometimes costs the team the game, or
37:08
Speaker 5: you know, just it's it's you know, you watch it
37:12
Speaker 5: in the NCAA tournament. You know you've seen players that
37:15
Speaker 5: because of what they did, their team probably lost the game.
37:18
Speaker 5: How do you help those athletes regain their confidence after
37:22
Speaker 5: they make a massive mistake or have a public loss
37:25
Speaker 5: like that. Are there are there some methods that you
37:27
Speaker 5: used to help them get their mojo back, so to speak.
37:32
Speaker 8: Yeah, that's a great question. I think one of the
37:35
Speaker 8: first things that we have to do in a situation
37:38
Speaker 8: where we have failure is we have to accept it,
37:41
Speaker 8: right like acceptance being here are the facts. We're going
37:46
Speaker 8: to strip judgment, We're going to strip opinion away. And
37:48
Speaker 8: sometimes that's really hard, you know, because all all athletes
37:53
Speaker 8: want to be successful. Nobody wants to fail, nobody wants
37:57
Speaker 8: to let their teammates down. But in this instance, we
38:00
Speaker 8: take a look at I was watching the Yukon women's
38:03
Speaker 8: scene over the weekend and I can't remember who was that.
38:07
Speaker 8: She went in for a layup and she missed it
38:08
Speaker 8: late in the game. It was a critical myss and
38:11
Speaker 8: she turned around and she ran down the court in tears, yeah,
38:14
Speaker 8: and you know she felt it instantly. But if we
38:19
Speaker 8: go back and we look at the tape of that game,
38:21
Speaker 8: there are so many plays right that didn't happen that
38:26
Speaker 8: all contributed. And that's that's one thing we do is,
38:30
Speaker 8: you know, I kind of let them process and get
38:32
Speaker 8: it out. Tell me exactly what you think, and then
38:34
Speaker 8: we're going to go back and we're going to take
38:37
Speaker 8: an honest, factual look at, you know, the game to
38:40
Speaker 8: match whatever it is, and we're going to learn from it.
38:44
Speaker 8: And I'm a true believer in learning in sport, learning
38:48
Speaker 8: in life obviously, but learning in sport, and that takes
38:52
Speaker 8: some humility. We look at it and we go I
38:57
Speaker 8: messed that up. I missed that call, I missed that tackle,
39:00
Speaker 8: I missed that sign. I wasn't prepared, I was out late, right,
39:04
Speaker 8: I was doing this, I was doing that. I you know,
39:07
Speaker 8: I didn't make good judgments outside of my sport leading
39:11
Speaker 8: into it. We have to own it, and that's that's
39:13
Speaker 8: a part of it. But I think one of the
39:15
Speaker 8: things that's key is can we own it without being
39:19
Speaker 8: a bad person? M hmm, right, But let me and
39:22
Speaker 8: separating that is really important.
39:25
Speaker 3: And I think at least to another you know, topic
39:28
Speaker 3: within that. You know, I'm I play quarterback in college
39:31
Speaker 3: and I've coached quarterbacks, and I think that when you're
39:34
Speaker 3: looking at positions like a goalie in soccer or hockey,
39:37
Speaker 3: a quarterback, a pitcher, even I would say baseball players
39:41
Speaker 3: in general, because you know, as much as it is
39:43
Speaker 3: a team sport, when you're at the you know, when
39:45
Speaker 3: you're batt and you're by yourself, how what what what
39:49
Speaker 3: advice or what methodologies exercises do you use in order
39:53
Speaker 3: to get players who are in high pressure positions to
39:58
Speaker 3: you know, relax, get in the flow state, and just
40:02
Speaker 3: to be able to play and sort of get outside
40:04
Speaker 3: of their heads.
40:06
Speaker 8: Yeah, that's a great question too. It's really multifaceted. One
40:11
Speaker 8: of them really is in preparation. What are we going
40:14
Speaker 8: to do to prepare? How do we have purposeful practice
40:16
Speaker 8: leading into competition like that? Yeah. One of the things
40:22
Speaker 8: you always hear Derek Jeter talk about when asked about
40:25
Speaker 8: how he was able to perform at the highest level
40:28
Speaker 8: at the highest moment is his dedication to practice mirror
40:34
Speaker 8: there so that he felt comfortable in those situations. So
40:38
Speaker 8: one of the things I work with my athletes on
40:40
Speaker 8: is let's just not go you know, I don't want
40:42
Speaker 8: to go to the range. Just hit balls for five
40:45
Speaker 8: six hours and think like that's going to help me.
40:49
Speaker 8: It might actually do the opposite. In fact, it does
40:52
Speaker 8: quite a bit. Or our quarterback, right, where's my film study?
40:57
Speaker 8: And if I say I studied film, how did I
41:00
Speaker 8: study film? Am I studying film properly? Or am I
41:05
Speaker 8: just kind of looking at stuff thinking like okay, I
41:07
Speaker 8: kind of got to feel for what they do and
41:08
Speaker 8: how they do it, and you know, we'll roll from that,
41:10
Speaker 8: I know, in the check out of this if they
41:12
Speaker 8: roll in the cover two or you know, or are
41:16
Speaker 8: we really looking at some things? Am I looking at?
41:18
Speaker 8: When do I need to you know, check down for
41:21
Speaker 8: the line, make a move there? When do I need
41:23
Speaker 8: to audible to play? What specifically am I doing that's
41:27
Speaker 8: helping me be more knowledgeable and confident in my preparation
41:33
Speaker 8: leading into you know, into my you know, game match
41:37
Speaker 8: whatever it is. The other side of that is, I
41:41
Speaker 8: think in any sport we need to be active learners.
41:45
Speaker 8: The more that we're actively learning during a game, during
41:49
Speaker 8: a match, the less I'm going to personalize.
41:53
Speaker 2: Wow. I like that. I like that.
41:56
Speaker 5: That's really good.
41:57
Speaker 8: The less yeah, the less I personal lies, the more
42:02
Speaker 8: in the moment I can stay.
42:05
Speaker 3: So so just just to build on that, because for
42:07
Speaker 3: people listening, you said actively listen, and then you related
42:11
Speaker 3: that to not personalizing what's going on. So just explain
42:16
Speaker 3: that a little bit more so people can catch it.
42:19
Speaker 8: Yeah, So, like, you know, if I'm playing baseball and
42:22
Speaker 8: I'm up there and the guy's blowing ninety five at me,
42:25
Speaker 8: you know, and I'm you know, I'm way late, and
42:30
Speaker 8: my focus isn't on. Okay, hey, we've got we've got
42:34
Speaker 8: to increase timing here. And I'm coaching myself up above
42:38
Speaker 8: all and learned, Hey, it was a little faster than
42:40
Speaker 8: what I saw in the on deck circle. If I
42:43
Speaker 8: go into oh god, I'm not fast enough for this guy,
42:47
Speaker 8: like I can I can't catch that. Oh God, what
42:49
Speaker 8: am I going to do? All right, Well, maybe I gotta,
42:52
Speaker 8: you know, do this, do that now. All of a sudden,
42:54
Speaker 8: I went from stepping in the box very focused to
42:58
Speaker 8: after one pitch, my mind is going in twenty different
43:02
Speaker 8: directions and I'm not focused.
43:04
Speaker 2: It's such a great tool.
43:08
Speaker 8: So and then and then if I have a failure
43:10
Speaker 8: in that at at Well, now I'm really down on myself.
43:13
Speaker 8: And does that carry out on the field, and how
43:16
Speaker 8: do we You know, one of the things I talk
43:17
Speaker 8: about is, you know, part of this approach prevents that
43:20
Speaker 8: domino effect. Yeah, right, If I have a bad at bat,
43:25
Speaker 8: then I go out and then man, I get a
43:28
Speaker 8: ground ball or fly ball and I make an error. Well,
43:31
Speaker 8: now I've just hurt my team twice. Now I'm really
43:34
Speaker 8: kicking mind from my backside, right Like, I'm really upset
43:36
Speaker 8: with myself and I'm out of the game. I'm not
43:40
Speaker 8: a part of it, and I'm not helping my teammates
43:42
Speaker 8: at that point. And we can take any sport. Watch
43:46
Speaker 8: a quarterback who throws an interception. How they respond to
43:49
Speaker 8: that interception when they go to the sideline will tell
43:52
Speaker 8: you a lot about where they are in their confidence,
43:56
Speaker 8: in their skill, in their mindset, and in their leadership.
44:00
Speaker 1: I was just it's funny that you brought that up,
44:03
Speaker 1: because I was sitting here and I was listening to that,
44:05
Speaker 1: and I'm and I can see I can remember guys
44:09
Speaker 1: who made a mistake, not even a major one, but
44:13
Speaker 1: they made a mistake, and now they come to the sideline,
44:17
Speaker 1: they don't want to talk to anybody. It's like like
44:19
Speaker 1: they they like they shut themselves off. And what you're
44:23
Speaker 1: saying is there's not a real reality for them to
44:26
Speaker 1: be able to get back into the game, get back
44:28
Speaker 1: to the player that you thought you were going to be,
44:32
Speaker 1: because you're you're you don't now you're not trusting yourself.
44:35
Speaker 1: You're not like you're still fighting that last play. You're
44:38
Speaker 1: not using your analytical skills you figure out what happened. Yeah,
44:42
Speaker 1: used and how many times? How many times has the
44:45
Speaker 1: coach said forget the last play?
44:47
Speaker 3: But I think, but I think coaches say forget the
44:50
Speaker 3: last play, but there's no follow up to say, Okay,
44:54
Speaker 3: this happened and this is why that happened.
44:56
Speaker 2: You see what I'm saying.
44:57
Speaker 1: I getting there's no follow up.
45:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, the coach doesn't have a philosophy on how you
45:06
Speaker 2: forget that.
45:08
Speaker 5: It tells you yeah, and the domino effect, I mean
45:13
Speaker 5: that that that you can you can take that and
45:15
Speaker 5: just put it in real life terms. You know, because
45:18
Speaker 5: you're at work and something goes bad and then you're like,
45:20
Speaker 5: well that was my fault, and then you know, you
45:22
Speaker 5: can't focus, you can't concentrate, and it just keeps it
45:25
Speaker 5: just keeps, the ball keeps rolling and then you have
45:27
Speaker 5: a really bad day. So that's basically, you know, in
45:31
Speaker 5: taking it to layman terms, what you're saying with athletes,
45:33
Speaker 5: it's the same thing basically.
45:36
Speaker 8: Absolutely. You know the the lay person that you know,
45:39
Speaker 8: something happens on the way to work or at home
45:42
Speaker 8: before they get into work, and you know if they
45:44
Speaker 8: make a comment, well, this day is going to stuck right, Well,
45:48
Speaker 8: that's a domino effect right now. After that, I'm looking
45:51
Speaker 8: at anything that's possibly negative. That's another domino on my
45:54
Speaker 8: way for today.
45:56
Speaker 3: So so what advice you know, maybe a parent they
45:59
Speaker 3: have haven't gone to see a sports psyche college as yet,
46:02
Speaker 3: they have a you know, a youth athlete or maybe
46:04
Speaker 3: a high school athlete. What advice other than that, because
46:08
Speaker 3: I think what you've laid out so far is just
46:10
Speaker 3: it's gold. Particularly like I said, not taking it personal.
46:14
Speaker 3: Be more analytical than you are emotional, figure out you
46:17
Speaker 3: know what's going on as opposed to you know it's
46:21
Speaker 3: you or what have you. But what general advice would
46:23
Speaker 3: you give to parents on how to manage their their
46:25
Speaker 3: younger youth athletes.
46:28
Speaker 8: Yeah, one of the discussions I have with parents, is
46:31
Speaker 8: we have to have realistic expectations. Not everybody's Tiger Woods,
46:36
Speaker 8: Michael Jordan, you know, Peyton Manning, Randy Moss. Okay, let's
46:40
Speaker 8: just you know, let's let's let's get a perspective, but
46:44
Speaker 8: also let's let's get them with coaches that match who
46:47
Speaker 8: they are. I'll tell you a quick story. I had
46:49
Speaker 8: a little eight year old guy that was a pretty
46:52
Speaker 8: good ballplayer. I guess was on a travel team. Is
46:55
Speaker 8: Mom brings them in after they went to perfect game
46:59
Speaker 8: in Atlanta, and then they went down to Disney the
47:02
Speaker 8: play and this poor little guy didn't play one inning of.
47:11
Speaker 2: Disgusting.
47:13
Speaker 8: He was throwing up in the hotel room because he
47:17
Speaker 8: was so anxious and afraid to make a mistake in
47:21
Speaker 8: an error. And the coach was the main culprit because
47:26
Speaker 8: he's screaming at him.
47:27
Speaker 2: Wow.
47:28
Speaker 8: And finally I told Mom, I said, listen, I said,
47:32
Speaker 8: you leave him on this team. You're gonna hurt this
47:33
Speaker 8: little guy. And he's a great logo high. I said,
47:36
Speaker 8: he needs to either hey, quit the team, find another team,
47:41
Speaker 8: find another sport for right now, but get him away
47:44
Speaker 8: from this coach because what's happening to him is not
47:47
Speaker 8: normal and it's hurting him. M m. That's a true story.
47:52
Speaker 8: And and they ended up quitting this team and getting
47:54
Speaker 8: away from this coach.
47:56
Speaker 5: So it had a happy ending.
47:59
Speaker 2: Thank you know.
48:00
Speaker 8: And I'm talking to this little guy about it and
48:02
Speaker 8: he's just buckets the tears. You know. Who doesn't want
48:04
Speaker 8: to play at Disney?
48:06
Speaker 4: Yeah?
48:07
Speaker 2: Smart?
48:07
Speaker 8: Right, I mean, sign me up.
48:10
Speaker 5: Well, I have one more question for you, doctor, if
48:12
Speaker 5: you don't If you don't mind, so, so your experience,
48:16
Speaker 5: it sounds like you've worked with all levels from Little
48:18
Speaker 5: league on to college and and pro level. You've worked
48:20
Speaker 5: with all different ages and types of athletes. So, in
48:24
Speaker 5: your opinion, what is one of the most crucial yet
48:28
Speaker 5: probably overlooked mental skill sets that you need in sports
48:35
Speaker 5: to be successful or not be successful? But do you
48:39
Speaker 5: have one particular personality trait you feel like is.
48:46
Speaker 8: That's a great I don't know if I've ever been
48:47
Speaker 8: asked that question. Let me think.
48:50
Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
48:51
Speaker 2: I didn't mean to throw you for a No.
48:53
Speaker 8: It's great. Yeah, I mean, this is this is what
48:55
Speaker 8: I want to know. Well, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm
49:02
Speaker 8: gonna give you a little more than you asked for.
49:06
Speaker 8: The willingness to accept there is no perfection, but to
49:12
Speaker 8: drive you can get.
49:15
Speaker 5: Wow, that's true, right there, you nailed it.
49:18
Speaker 1: See and you have and to that, you have people
49:23
Speaker 1: who are afraid of what the potential might be. They
49:28
Speaker 1: may have the skill set, but what they're worried about
49:33
Speaker 1: is what if I don't make this play? What if
49:36
Speaker 1: I don't do this? And they're more likely not going
49:41
Speaker 1: to do anything because of that risk.
49:45
Speaker 5: It holds them by.
49:46
Speaker 8: It holds them by, holds them back tremendously. Right a
49:50
Speaker 8: major league baseball player talking to me about we were
49:54
Speaker 8: talking about the game tonight and then immediately shifts into
49:59
Speaker 8: how next Tuesday he's got to face Kershaw and Kershaw's
50:03
Speaker 8: hook has always gotten them, And I'm.
50:05
Speaker 2: Like, take care of this point we got.
50:14
Speaker 8: Now, yeah, let's play the night.
50:18
Speaker 3: And in this environment where we have not only just uh,
50:22
Speaker 3: you know, the pressure to win and perform well, which
50:25
Speaker 3: that's always going to have been there, but now we
50:28
Speaker 3: have added pressure when you have social media, when you
50:31
Speaker 3: have all eyes on you, when you know a great
50:34
Speaker 3: play could be on you know, ESPN Top ten and
50:37
Speaker 3: a bad play could you know, be all over the internet.
50:40
Speaker 3: What what are you some of your thoughts or how
50:42
Speaker 3: do you manage and navigate athletes do that?
50:45
Speaker 1: And before you ask that, I want to before you
50:47
Speaker 1: answer that, I want to ask the question, is that
50:51
Speaker 1: even possible to navigate when you know that's with that person,
50:57
Speaker 1: that that person has that Is there something that you
51:00
Speaker 1: do and what is that to solve.
51:03
Speaker 8: That to not be affected by what's going on? Yes, yes,
51:12
Speaker 8: we've got to We've got to convince them, and I
51:15
Speaker 8: try to do this that if you can't manage that,
51:20
Speaker 8: if you don't have the mental and really honestly emotional
51:24
Speaker 8: skills to handle that, then we have to limit that
51:29
Speaker 8: and come off of that. And I'll be honest with you.
51:31
Speaker 8: I've had this conversation with several too many pro athletes
51:35
Speaker 8: where they're coming in and they are hot about some
51:40
Speaker 8: person that they don't know that's probably sitting in a
51:45
Speaker 8: requiner somewhere, but they just roasted them on you know,
51:50
Speaker 8: Instagram or this and that and then and I'm like,
51:54
Speaker 8: what are you doing? And it's like a reality check.
51:59
Speaker 8: But because of some of the younger athletes that have
52:03
Speaker 8: I think grown up with this natural social presence, because
52:11
Speaker 8: of the phones and because of these platforms, I think
52:16
Speaker 8: that they feel like that's a natural transition. You know,
52:19
Speaker 8: many of them in the recruiting process. What do they
52:23
Speaker 8: do They post their videos? Yeah, right, So we're encouraging
52:28
Speaker 8: them on one side of it to advertise themselves, market themselves.
52:32
Speaker 8: But on the other side of it is, hey, don't
52:34
Speaker 8: listen to that critical comment that Joe or Salish Mo
52:37
Speaker 8: made over there on that whole thing. So we take
52:41
Speaker 8: a look at the impact on them, and I kind
52:44
Speaker 8: of use some humor, you know, and and and get
52:47
Speaker 8: them to kind of laugh like, yeah, it's that is
52:50
Speaker 8: completely silly that I'm letting somebody that I will never meet,
52:53
Speaker 8: don't know, upset me this much or makes me question myself.
52:58
Speaker 3: Yeah, right now, now you know I didn't give you
53:01
Speaker 3: a chance to We've kind of went right into it.
53:04
Speaker 3: So if you could doc like, uh, just kind of
53:07
Speaker 3: run us your resume and your contact information just in
53:10
Speaker 3: case maybe anybody would like to, you know, schedule appointment
53:13
Speaker 3: up if you have openings or or like to talk
53:16
Speaker 3: to you, or maybe you can for fur them out.
53:19
Speaker 8: Yeah, no, absolutely. My uh my office number is seven
53:23
Speaker 8: zero four five zero three three five three five and
53:29
Speaker 8: my email is my name b R I A n
53:33
Speaker 8: AT b R I A N M O N T
53:38
Speaker 8: E L E O n E dot com and also
53:42
Speaker 8: connects it to my website. You can find me. But
53:46
Speaker 8: I've been I've been fortunate enough to you know, be
53:49
Speaker 8: a college baseball player. I was very, very fortunate in
53:54
Speaker 8: my residency to spend a year with the Olympic Sports
53:59
Speaker 8: psychologist out of Roanoke, Virginia. We work with the women's
54:03
Speaker 8: Olympic fencing team. Wow, it was just I got very
54:10
Speaker 8: lucky to work with doctor Hyle in that in that capacity.
54:14
Speaker 8: And I have been working with athletes since graduate school.
54:20
Speaker 8: And uh, I have all Americans at the high school level.
54:24
Speaker 8: I have all Americans national champions at the collegiate level
54:28
Speaker 8: in several sports. I have a Master's champion in golf
54:33
Speaker 8: that that I was lucky enough to work for with
54:35
Speaker 8: for a few years, and a variety of sports. I
54:42
Speaker 8: even Charlotte has a a roller derby team. And one
54:50
Speaker 8: time I got a phone call and I'm like, I
54:53
Speaker 8: will probably work for free just to meet you guys.
54:58
Speaker 2: Situations My grandma used to love relevant.
55:03
Speaker 8: Unfortunately they had come in so I was so so
55:07
Speaker 8: at the resume builder for sure.
55:10
Speaker 3: And before we let you go, you know, recently, the
55:12
Speaker 3: NFL Roger Goodell, he mandated that every team, you know,
55:16
Speaker 3: have a mental health professional. I don't know if it's
55:19
Speaker 3: like a sports psychologist, but a mental health professional on staff.
55:22
Speaker 3: So do you see that something that's going to be,
55:25
Speaker 3: you know, just sort of standard practice, not only at
55:29
Speaker 3: the professional ranks, but maybe even down to the high
55:31
Speaker 3: school ranks.
55:32
Speaker 8: Yeah, I would love to see that be something that standard.
55:35
Speaker 8: I mean I know that, you know, I like to
55:38
Speaker 8: affiliate myself with with you know, high school and college
55:42
Speaker 8: college athletes down there, and have built a network, which
55:45
Speaker 8: which is great. But I think there's two pieces to this.
55:48
Speaker 8: And Carl you you might be able to jump in
55:50
Speaker 8: on this too, because I find this with my athletes
55:53
Speaker 8: that that find me through their agents and and things.
55:56
Speaker 8: But they as much as I think that out of
56:00
Speaker 8: a valued resource on any team, NFL, team, MLB, whatever,
56:07
Speaker 8: players are very suspicious about talking to employees going on
56:14
Speaker 8: with them right for fear that there is no confidentiality
56:19
Speaker 8: and that their privacy will be exploded and it's going
56:23
Speaker 8: to be all over the team's business. The coach is
56:25
Speaker 8: going to find out YadA, YadA, YadA, you know, up
56:28
Speaker 8: to the owners and So, you know, one of the
56:30
Speaker 8: things that I think in my position, you know, being
56:34
Speaker 8: in private practice and being you know, kind of separate
56:37
Speaker 8: from any team, is that I hold to them that
56:41
Speaker 8: confidentiality will be upheld.
56:45
Speaker 2: You know.
56:45
Speaker 8: I was. I was in contact with the president of
56:48
Speaker 8: one of the NBA teams out on the West Coast,
56:51
Speaker 8: and the player that I was working with, I said,
56:55
Speaker 8: you can tell me what you will allow me to
56:59
Speaker 8: tell him or not. And that made him feel a
57:02
Speaker 8: whole lot better knowing that we could just talk. So
57:08
Speaker 8: as much as I am a tremendous advocate for mental
57:12
Speaker 8: health on every team and every sport up and down,
57:16
Speaker 8: high school, college and pro, there are some drawbacks. Carl Right, Yeah,
57:21
Speaker 8: would you go in there and talk about some things
57:25
Speaker 8: to the mental health professional you know that's employed by
57:28
Speaker 8: the Vikes.
57:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, I would be hesitant because even I mean back
57:34
Speaker 1: in my day, even going to the trainer and saying
57:38
Speaker 1: something's hurt and he goes to the coach and tells
57:41
Speaker 1: him that, oh, we don't think he can play.
57:43
Speaker 2: Now I'm out.
57:43
Speaker 1: I mean, I think there's a lot of at least
57:47
Speaker 1: old school players would not be willing to step out
57:52
Speaker 1: and get any kind of no, I'm good. I'm fine,
57:56
Speaker 1: don't worry. My mental health is good. And I think
57:59
Speaker 1: that's probably a big problem that we're having. That that
58:02
Speaker 1: that we're having now with former athletes is they won't go.
58:08
Speaker 8: Yeah. And and honestly, that's the former athletes, particularly some
58:11
Speaker 8: of the NFL guys that I've worked with. We're we're
58:15
Speaker 8: flat out honest with me. They're like, doctor, if I
58:17
Speaker 8: met you when I was playing, I wouldn't said a
58:18
Speaker 8: word to you, nodded to you, walk buy you, and
58:21
Speaker 8: I would have never come in there. If you did
58:24
Speaker 8: a training, I might ask you a question or two
58:26
Speaker 8: that was generic, be nice to you, and I'm gone,
58:30
Speaker 8: I'm not talking to you because of exactly what you're
58:33
Speaker 8: talking about. For fear, that's something we get back to
58:36
Speaker 8: the coach or the ownership that would negatively impact them.
58:38
Speaker 2: And there's a lot of players that don't. They don't
58:40
Speaker 2: want to know if something's wrong. They don't.
58:43
Speaker 1: They don't they're not interested in that, and that's that's
58:46
Speaker 1: an unfortunate situation. But the reality of that is, you know,
58:51
Speaker 1: they want to just live their life and for as
58:53
Speaker 1: long as they got and they don't even want to
58:54
Speaker 1: get checked. They don't want to, you know, I mean,
58:56
Speaker 1: because how do you not go get Like when you
58:58
Speaker 1: got an opportunity to get checked out everything and you
59:02
Speaker 1: don't go and it's free, you don't know, I mean,
59:06
Speaker 1: that's a healthcare expensive.
59:07
Speaker 2: Yeah.
59:08
Speaker 8: So, Doc, so I sent guys to Raleigh to go
59:11
Speaker 8: get go get the full exam Carl.
59:13
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm like you got you right?
59:15
Speaker 8: You are you are forty five fifty fifty five years old.
59:18
Speaker 8: You need to know what's going on with you?
59:20
Speaker 2: Yeah?
59:21
Speaker 3: Yeah, And Doc, could you just like give us your
59:23
Speaker 3: your contact information one more time? Because I would really
59:26
Speaker 3: like to. As much as we have been talking about
59:28
Speaker 3: athletes on this segment, I think particularly has it relates
59:32
Speaker 3: to youth and and you know, younger athletes, we could
59:35
Speaker 3: probably the parents probably need to be involved as much
59:37
Speaker 3: as as much as the athletes do to sort of
59:40
Speaker 3: build that perspective and help, you know, navigate that emotional
59:43
Speaker 3: and mental health side of their children. So could you
59:45
Speaker 3: give your contact information one more time?
59:48
Speaker 8: Oh? Absolutely, thank you? Seven zero four five zero three
59:53
Speaker 8: three five three five. And then my email is b
59:57
Speaker 8: r I A n AT b r I A N
1:00:02
Speaker 8: M O n E E L E O n E
1:00:07
Speaker 8: dot com all right, funny story about that. I actually
1:00:11
Speaker 8: got fired because I was working with a female golfer
1:00:18
Speaker 8: and her dad was the issue mm hmm. And I
1:00:24
Speaker 8: told him and he did not like that. I'm sure
1:00:30
Speaker 8: he did not get fired.
1:00:36
Speaker 5: I probably need to seek out your services, doctor, because
1:00:39
Speaker 5: Carl fires me every week, so I probably need some therapys.
1:00:44
Speaker 8: The lights over there, So.
1:00:46
Speaker 2: We did, we did well, Thank you, doc.
1:00:48
Speaker 3: It's created and we definitely want to get you back
1:00:51
Speaker 3: on as we try to navigate this thing, because I
1:00:53
Speaker 3: think we're just seeing it more and more, particularly like
1:00:56
Speaker 3: you know, we've had a couple of suicides and different
1:00:58
Speaker 3: things of that nature. So it's definitely something to be
1:01:00
Speaker 3: talked about more.
1:01:02
Speaker 2: Well.
1:01:02
Speaker 8: I appreciate you guys having me on and I would
1:01:04
Speaker 8: love to participate whenever you thought I might add some
1:01:08
Speaker 8: value than.
1:01:10
Speaker 2: Awesome.
1:01:11
Speaker 8: All right, you take care of.
1:01:12
Speaker 2: Thank you you too. Yeah, that was awesome man.
1:01:18
Speaker 1: To get that kind of information, To have an opportunity
1:01:21
Speaker 1: to get that kind of information is to me is
1:01:24
Speaker 1: like it's critical, and especially young athletes you you know,
1:01:30
Speaker 1: and and I hate I hate to talk about football
1:01:33
Speaker 1: like it seems like it's a negative. But if you're
1:01:35
Speaker 1: playing football and you are an aggressive type player quote
1:01:41
Speaker 1: a good player.
1:01:43
Speaker 2: You know, there's some there's.
1:01:44
Speaker 1: Possibilities that you know, you could have some issues or
1:01:49
Speaker 1: you could you could eventually get them.
1:01:52
Speaker 2: You need to make sure that you.
1:01:55
Speaker 1: Get yourself checked as much as you possibly can, just
1:01:59
Speaker 1: so that you you're aware, because man, I mean, you know,
1:02:03
Speaker 1: I've got I mean there's a ton of guys that
1:02:05
Speaker 1: I play ball with who man, they don't even like,
1:02:10
Speaker 1: you know, they don't they don't know.
1:02:11
Speaker 2: Who you are.
1:02:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, And I look and I kind of look at
1:02:16
Speaker 3: it maybe from more the intellectual standpoint as far as, like,
1:02:20
Speaker 3: you know, getting that athlete right for to be competitive,
1:02:25
Speaker 3: and like he said, don't personalize everything within the game,
1:02:29
Speaker 3: like you have to really make sure that you are
1:02:31
Speaker 3: engaging in the game, engaging in practice. That's going to
1:02:35
Speaker 3: be very intentional and as he said, purposeful, so that
1:02:37
Speaker 3: way you can get the information, get the data that
1:02:40
Speaker 3: you need, so that way your performance can be at
1:02:43
Speaker 3: a higher level. So I think just you know, post game,
1:02:46
Speaker 3: whether you you know you're you're done playing the game,
1:02:48
Speaker 3: or whether you're in the game, or maybe even before
1:02:50
Speaker 3: you start, this type of help can really propel you
1:02:54
Speaker 3: to where you want to go.
1:02:55
Speaker 6: Yeah.
1:02:55
Speaker 5: I mean I thought everything you said made sense. You know,
1:02:59
Speaker 5: I I would hope that maybe. I don't know if
1:03:01
Speaker 5: Charleston has, you know, someone with his type of qualifications
1:03:05
Speaker 5: for our athletes, but it would be nice if if
1:03:07
Speaker 5: we could have somebody like that available for our personal
1:03:11
Speaker 5: athletes here in.
1:03:12
Speaker 1: That's a musk, that's a mus I don't think we
1:03:14
Speaker 1: have one. I don't think I have one.
1:03:17
Speaker 2: I don't.
1:03:18
Speaker 1: But but do you know whether or not coaches necessarily
1:03:22
Speaker 1: would send.
1:03:24
Speaker 2: Well, I don't think it would be on the cap. Well,
1:03:26
Speaker 2: let me not, let me not say that.
1:03:27
Speaker 3: I think if there was one available who was known
1:03:30
Speaker 3: to help athlete absolutely, particularly like I said, if I
1:03:33
Speaker 3: have a quarterback, a picture, a linebacker, they have those
1:03:35
Speaker 3: critical positions in which I need would I know you
1:03:38
Speaker 3: could perform at a high level, but you have some
1:03:40
Speaker 3: sort of mental block, not necessarily like you're not you
1:03:43
Speaker 3: don't have a mental You know a lot of healthy
1:03:45
Speaker 3: you just you just need some some.
1:03:46
Speaker 2: Guidance along that line.
1:03:48
Speaker 3: And like I said, even to help the team, even
1:03:50
Speaker 3: to help you as a coach to be a better coach.
1:03:52
Speaker 3: I think definitely parents and coaches, because I've had several
1:03:55
Speaker 3: people asked, but I was like.
1:03:57
Speaker 2: I don't know of one.
1:03:58
Speaker 3: I mean, I know in general, you know, and the unfortunately,
1:04:01
Speaker 3: from a state wide perspective, we have a shortage of
1:04:04
Speaker 3: psychologists and therapists just in general, so you know, And
1:04:08
Speaker 3: that's why I had he can give us information, because
1:04:10
Speaker 3: maybe he could reach out and have a couple of
1:04:12
Speaker 3: telephone calls and try to help someone white athletes.
1:04:14
Speaker 1: Chair Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're glad you joined us
1:04:19
Speaker 1: today and we will be back again next week. We're
1:04:22
Speaker 1: out of here.
