- 0:15There's a relationship conversation women have behind closed
- 0:20doors that we rarely call a financial conversation.
- 0:25It sounds like this.
- 0:27I love him but I'm tired.
- 0:30I love her but I feel like I'm
- 0:32carrying everything.
- 0:35We keep talking about what we want but
- 0:38I simply seem to be the only person
- 0:41actually doing something to get us there.
- 0:45I want to save, they want to spend.
- 0:49I want to build, they're comfortable.
- 0:51I want to start that business, they keep
- 0:56telling me why it won't work.
- 0:59I want more for our family, they think
- 1:02what we have it's good enough.
- 1:05And eventually a woman starts asking a question
- 1:08that makes her feel guilty just for thinking
- 1:12it.
- 1:13Can I love someone and still admit that
- 1:16we are not moving in the same direction?
- 1:19Yes, you can and that is the conversation
- 1:23we're having today.
- 1:25Welcome back to Financial Feminism.
- 1:28I'm Dr. Tanika Bruce and around here we
- 1:30talk about money differently.
- 1:33We talk about ownership, options, work, business, relationships,
- 1:45leadership, the things women build, the things women
- 1:50protect, and the things that quietly affect our
- 1:54financial futures whether we want to call them
- 1:57financial decisions or not.
- 1:59So today I want to talk about love
- 2:02probably not in the way that you expect.
- 2:07I'm not giving relationship advice and I'm not
- 2:11telling anybody to break up and I am
- 2:14not telling you that a partner who earns
- 2:17less money is somehow less valuable and I'm
- 2:20certainly not saying that two people must have
- 2:24identical careers, salaries, personalities, or dreams.
- 2:30That would be ridiculous.
- 2:33What I am asking is much simpler.
- 2:36Are the two of you building compatible futures?
- 2:41Because love and financial alignment they're not the
- 2:45same thing and sometimes we need enough courage
- 2:49to admit that.
- 2:50There's a sentence I want you to write
- 2:53down.
- 2:54Love can be real and the alignment can
- 2:57still be wrong.
- 3:00I think women need permission to hold both
- 3:03truths at the same time.
- 3:05You can love somebody, respect them, have a
- 3:10history with them, you can laugh with them,
- 3:13raise children together, build memories together, and still
- 3:18have serious disagreements about ambition, money, responsibility, risk,
- 3:27work, ownership, or even the future.
- 3:32That doesn't automatically make anyone a villain but
- 3:37pretending those differences do not matter can become
- 3:40very expensive.
- 3:42Not just financially but emotionally, professionally, entrepreneurially, and
- 3:50sometimes generationally because another adult's decisions can affect
- 3:56the life you're trying to build and if
- 3:59we're going to talk seriously about financial feminism
- 4:02then we have to be willing to talk
- 4:04about that too.
- 4:06Let's look at the quiet version of being
- 4:09held back.
- 4:10When people hear the words toxic relationship they
- 4:15often imagine the most extreme version, right?
- 4:19They imagine control, threats, abuse, manipulation.
- 4:25Now those things are serious and they deserve
- 4:28to be treated seriously but I want to
- 4:31talk and I want to be careful here
- 4:33because not every difficult financial relationship is abusive.
- 4:39Sometimes what is happening is incompatibility and sometimes
- 4:44it's irresponsibility and sometimes it's avoidance.
- 4:49Sometimes one person has changed and the other
- 4:52person has not.
- 4:54Sometimes one person is ambitious and the other
- 4:58genuinely does not value growth in the same
- 5:01way and sometimes two good people discover that
- 5:05they want two very different lives.
- 5:09That matters because there are women listening to
- 5:13me who are not being abused.
- 5:15They are simply exhausted from dragging another adult
- 5:19towards a future that adult has shown very
- 5:22little interest in building and that's a different
- 5:25conversation and we need language for it.
- 5:29Maybe you're the one who keeps applying for
- 5:32the promotion, the one taking the classes, the
- 5:36one researching the business, the one trying to
- 5:39improve the credit, the one asking about retirement,
- 5:43the one trying to save, the one looking
- 5:47for the house, the one wanting to relocate,
- 5:52the one thinking about what happens five years
- 5:55from now.
- 5:56Meanwhile your partner isn't necessarily doing anything horrible.
- 6:01They're simply comfortable and every time you try
- 6:05to move the family forward you feel like
- 6:08you're pulling a car with the emergency brake
- 6:10on and that can wear a woman down
- 6:13especially a woman who's already carrying leadership everywhere
- 6:18else.
- 6:20Maybe she leads at work, she handles the
- 6:24family, she solves the problems, she remembers the
- 6:29appointments, she manages the emergencies, she makes sure
- 6:34everyone gets what they need, and then she
- 6:37comes home and realizes she's the only person
- 6:41trying to engineer the future.
- 6:43That's not sustainable.
- 6:46Now your partner doesn't have to become you
- 6:49and I want to make an important distinction.
- 6:54Your partner doesn't have to have your ambition.
- 6:58They don't have to become an entrepreneur just
- 7:01because you're one.
- 7:03They don't need another degree because you want
- 7:06another degree.
- 7:08They don't have to wake up thinking about
- 7:10business or investments or intellectual property or ownership.
- 7:15People are different.
- 7:17That's normal.
- 7:19The issue is not sameness.
- 7:21The issue is alignment.
- 7:24Can one person dream big and the other
- 7:28provide stability?
- 7:30Absolutely.
- 7:31Can one person build the business while the
- 7:34other takes on more responsibilities somewhere else?
- 7:37Of course.
- 7:39Can one person earn significantly more while the
- 7:43other contributes to the household in different ways?
- 7:47Certainly.
- 7:48Financial feminism isn't assigning value to human beings
- 7:53based on salary.
- 7:54That would contradict every single thing that we're
- 7:57building.
- 7:58What matters is whether both people understand the
- 8:02future that they're trying to create and whether
- 8:05their behavior supports it.
- 8:07That's different because ambition can look different.
- 8:12Contribution can look different.
- 8:15Work can look different.
- 8:18But partnership cannot consistently mean one person carries
- 8:23the consequences of two adults decisions.
- 8:28There's another sentence I want you to remember.
- 8:32Support is not the same as dependence and
- 8:37love is not a financial plan.
- 8:41The cost of waiting for someone else to
- 8:44change.
- 8:45Let's think about that.
- 8:47You know one of the most dangerous things
- 8:50we can do with our future is build
- 8:53the entire plan around another adult eventually becoming
- 8:58somebody they have never promised to become.
- 9:01When he gets serious.
- 9:04When she gets motivated.
- 9:06When they finally understand.
- 9:09When they stop spending.
- 9:12When they start getting jobs.
- 9:15When they start saving.
- 9:17When they decide to just work more or
- 9:21do more things around the house.
- 9:23When they decide to build something.
- 9:26When they finally see what I see.
- 9:28Well maybe they will.
- 9:31People grow.
- 9:32People change.
- 9:35Relationships evolve.
- 9:37But your financial strategy cannot depend entirely on
- 9:41a future personality change in somebody else.
- 9:45That is not strategy.
- 9:47That's hope.
- 9:49Hope has a place.
- 9:51But hope needs boundaries.
- 9:54If you want to own property someday know
- 9:57what that requires.
- 9:59If you want to build a business begin
- 10:01understanding the business.
- 10:04If you want retirement security understand your own
- 10:08retirement position.
- 10:10If you want stronger credit understand what appears
- 10:15in your name.
- 10:17If you want savings know what you can
- 10:20consistently protect.
- 10:22If you want options begin building options.
- 10:27Because there's a point where waiting for someone
- 10:31else to become ambitious can become a way
- 10:35of postponing your own responsibility.
- 10:39And financial feminism doesn't ask women to control
- 10:42other adults.
- 10:44It asks women to stop surrendering control over
- 10:48the parts of their own future they can
- 10:51actually influence.
- 10:53This episode is brought to you by the
- 10:55Financial Feminism Community.
- 10:57If today's conversation is making you think differently
- 11:00about your own value you're exactly the kind
- 11:04of woman we created this community for.
- 11:07Financial Feminism is more than a podcast.
- 11:10It's a movement helping women recognize their value,
- 11:14strengthen their financial confidence, build wealth, embrace technology,
- 11:20and create opportunities for themselves and the generations
- 11:23that follow.
- 11:25You don't have to figure it out alone.
- 11:27Join us and connect with women who are
- 11:29building businesses, advancing careers, and refusing to play
- 11:34small.
- 11:35Visit ownthepurse.com to learn more.
- 11:39I want to give you something practical.
- 11:42I call it the alignment test.
- 11:45This is not a test you hand to
- 11:47your partner.
- 11:48Please do not print this out and say
- 11:50Dr. Tanika said you fail.
- 11:52That is not what we're doing.
- 11:54This is for you privately.
- 11:57Four areas vision, effort, behavior, ownership.
- 12:03Start with the vision.
- 12:05The vision part.
- 12:06Ask do we actually want compatible futures?
- 12:11Not identical futures.
- 12:14Compatible futures.
- 12:15Maybe you want to travel.
- 12:18Maybe you want to own a home.
- 12:21Maybe you want to retire early.
- 12:24Maybe you want to start a business.
- 12:26Maybe you want to live internationally.
- 12:30Maybe you want to provide something significant for
- 12:33your children.
- 12:34Maybe you want to care for aging parents.
- 12:38Maybe you want a simpler life.
- 12:41Maybe you want a bigger one.
- 12:43None of those answers is automatically right or
- 12:45wrong, but two people cannot responsibly plan one
- 12:50future while privately wanting two completely different lives.
- 12:55At some point, somebody will feel sacrificed.
- 13:00So ask the question, what are we actually
- 13:03trying to build?
- 13:05Next is effort.
- 13:08The second part.
- 13:10Are both people willing to contribute towards the
- 13:14life they say they want?
- 13:16Again, contribution doesn't have to look identical.
- 13:21One person may earn more.
- 13:22Another person may handle more at home.
- 13:26One may take the entrepreneurial risk.
- 13:29The other may provide the stable benefits.
- 13:33One may manage investments.
- 13:35The other may manage another part of the
- 13:37household.
- 13:39But look for reciprocity.
- 13:41Is there movement?
- 13:43Is there responsibility?
- 13:45Is there willingness?
- 13:47Or is one person perpetually rescuing the other?
- 13:52That difference matters.
- 13:54There are women who've become so competent that
- 13:57everybody around them has learned they do not
- 14:01have to be.
- 14:03Think about that.
- 14:05Sometimes the reward for being the woman who
- 14:07always handles everything is that eventually everybody expects
- 14:12you to handle everything.
- 14:14And then we call that strength.
- 14:17Sometimes it is.
- 14:19Sometimes it's over-functioning.
- 14:22And there's nothing financially empowering about being the
- 14:27indispensable person to everyone except your own self.
- 14:32Behavior.
- 14:34That's the third one.
- 14:36Do the financial decisions match the financial conversation?
- 14:41This is where I want you to stop
- 14:43listening only to promises.
- 14:45I want you to look at patterns.
- 14:48You say you want to buy a house.
- 14:50What are you doing about it?
- 14:52You say you want to eliminate debt.
- 14:55What are you doing about it?
- 14:56You say you want a business.
- 14:59What are you building?
- 15:01You say retirement matters.
- 15:03What are you reviewing?
- 15:05You say the family needs more income.
- 15:08What's changing?
- 15:10You say spending needs to slow down.
- 15:14Did it?
- 15:15A future isn't built from what we repeatedly
- 15:19say we want.
- 15:20It's built from the decisions we repeatedly make.
- 15:26This is where women sometimes become afraid to
- 15:29tell themselves the truth because the truth may
- 15:32create a conversation they don't want to have.
- 15:35But avoiding the truth doesn't remove the consequence.
- 15:40It only delays the conversation.
- 15:44The fourth part is ownership.
- 15:47And this is where financial feminism becomes very
- 15:50practical.
- 15:51Ask yourself, what am I building that I
- 15:54understand?
- 15:56What am I building that I can influence?
- 15:59What am I building that doesn't completely disappear
- 16:03if another person makes a different decision?
- 16:07This could be savings in the appropriate structure
- 16:11for your circumstances, professional expertise, retirement assets, a
- 16:20business, investments, intellectual property, a book, a
- 16:31brand, equity, a certification, a network, a
- 16:41skill.
- 16:42It could be a financial plan you actually
- 16:45understand.
- 16:47Ownership isn't secrecy.
- 16:50I'm not encouraging women to hide assets from
- 16:53your spouses or violate legal obligations.
- 16:56I'm talking about financial awareness, financial participation, financial
- 17:04capability, knowing what exists, knowing what you signed,
- 17:10knowing what you owe, knowing what you own,
- 17:13knowing what happens if circumstances change.
- 17:17There's a major difference between partnership and financial
- 17:22disappearance.
- 17:23Do not disappear from your own financial life.
- 17:29Now, let us talk about the part that
- 17:31really, really hurts.
- 17:34Sometimes your growth changes a relationship.
- 17:37You start learning.
- 17:40You start building.
- 17:42You begin to see possibilities you didn't see
- 17:46before.
- 17:47You negotiate.
- 17:49You earn more.
- 17:52You want more responsibility.
- 17:55You start that business.
- 17:57You write that book.
- 17:59You meet different people.
- 18:02You become more confident.
- 18:05And somebody who was completely comfortable with the
- 18:09old version of you becomes uncomfortable with the
- 18:12new one.
- 18:13That can happen.
- 18:15And not every uncomfortable reaction means somebody is
- 18:19intentionally trying to sabotage you.
- 18:22Sometimes your growth exposes a difference that was
- 18:26already there.
- 18:27Maybe one person values expansion and the other
- 18:32values predictability.
- 18:34Maybe one loves risks and the other avoids
- 18:38it.
- 18:39Maybe one believes money should build tomorrow and
- 18:43the other believes money is primarily for enjoying
- 18:46today.
- 18:47Those differences need conversation.
- 18:50But there's another situation.
- 18:53The person who consistently mocks the dream, dismisses
- 18:58the plan, creates unnecessary financial chaos, expects you
- 19:05to repeatedly absorb the consequences, pressures you to
- 19:10make yourself smaller, treats your ambition as betrayal,
- 19:16or makes you feel guilty every time you
- 19:19attempt to strengthen your financial position.
- 19:23That deserves your attention.
- 19:26You don't have to immediately label it but
- 19:29you do need to stop pretending it has
- 19:32no cost.
- 19:34This is another place where women get stuck.
- 19:38Knowing your worth does not mean believing you
- 19:41are superior to your partner.
- 19:43It does not mean saying I have more
- 19:47degrees so I matter more.
- 19:49I earn more so I matter more.
- 19:52I'm more ambitious so I matter more.
- 19:55No.
- 19:56Worth isn't a ranking system.
- 19:59Knowing your worth means recognizing that your future
- 20:02has value too.
- 20:05Your goals matter too.
- 20:07Your time matters too.
- 20:11Your retirement matters too.
- 20:14Your health matters too.
- 20:17Your dreams matter too.
- 20:20Your financial security matters too.
- 20:24Your desire to build something meaningful doesn't become
- 20:27selfish because someone else doesn't share it.
- 20:31And that distinction is everything.
- 20:35You don't have to shrink your future to
- 20:37prove your love and you don't have to
- 20:40destroy somebody else to protect your future.
- 20:42Both can be true.
- 20:45Now I want to speak to the woman
- 20:47directly that has been waiting, not six weeks,
- 20:52years.
- 20:54You've been saying once things settle down, once
- 20:59they get serious, once we pay this off,
- 21:04once the children get older, once my partner
- 21:08gets on board, once somebody finally understands what
- 21:13I'm trying to do.
- 21:14I want to challenge you with love.
- 21:17What can you build now?
- 21:20Not secretly, not recklessly, and not irresponsibly, but
- 21:26what can you responsibly build now?
- 21:30Can you learn?
- 21:32Can you organize information?
- 21:35Can you understand your beliefs?
- 21:39Can you develop a skill?
- 21:42Can you start writing?
- 21:45Can you research the business?
- 21:48Can you calculate what the goal actually requires?
- 21:53Can you complete your ownership ladder?
- 21:57Can you begin creating one part of your
- 22:01future that doesn't require another person to wake
- 22:04up tomorrow with a completely different personality?
- 22:08Because you may discover something very important.
- 22:12You were waiting for permission nobody actually had
- 22:16the authority to withhold.
- 22:20This week we're continuing with the ownership ladder.
- 22:24We're not creating another resource just because we
- 22:27published another episode.
- 22:28I want you to use this one.
- 22:31Go back to your ladder.
- 22:33Income, savings, investments, asset, ownership, legacy.
- 22:40Now ask a different question.
- 22:43Where has another person's behavior been affecting my
- 22:48ability to climb?
- 22:51Don't make the whole exercise about them because
- 22:55that would defeat the purpose.
- 22:56Turn the question back towards your own agency.
- 23:00What can I do at my current rung?
- 23:04And if you're at income, perhaps the move
- 23:08is understanding your complete compensation or increasing your
- 23:13earning potential.
- 23:14If you are working on savings, perhaps the
- 23:17move is defining the amount that you personally
- 23:20need to create breathing room.
- 23:23If you're learning about investing, perhaps the move
- 23:26is education and understanding your own options.
- 23:32If you're assets, perhaps the move is identifying
- 23:36what you want to build next.
- 23:39If you're already an owner, perhaps the question
- 23:42is protection.
- 23:44And if you're thinking about legacy, perhaps it's
- 23:47time to ask whether the systems around what
- 23:50you have built actually reflect your intentions.
- 23:54One move not 17 one.
- 23:58And there's another reason financial feminism exists.
- 24:02Sometimes the people closest to you cannot be
- 24:06the only voices shaping your ambition.
- 24:09That doesn't mean you stop loving them.
- 24:12It means you widen the room.
- 24:15You need women who understand what it means
- 24:18to want more without needing them to perform
- 24:21success.
- 24:23Women who are building, women who are asking
- 24:26questions, women who can say, I don't understand
- 24:31investing yet.
- 24:33I want another source of income, or I'm
- 24:37thinking about buying something that creates value.
- 24:40I want to build business.
- 24:43I want to negotiate.
- 24:45I want more options.
- 24:48I want to protect what I already created.
- 24:52And nobody laughs.
- 24:54Nobody tells her she's doing too much and
- 24:56nobody makes her apologize for asking the question
- 25:00or says, you just think differently than everyone
- 25:03else.
- 25:04That's community.
- 25:06Sometimes you need to hear somebody else say,
- 25:09you know what I'm building too.
- 25:11Not because the community replaces your relationship.
- 25:14It should not, but no one relationship should
- 25:19have to supply every form of mentorship, encouragement,
- 25:25knowledge, perspective, and ambition that you need.
- 25:31So widen the room.
- 25:33Your action this week, I'm going to give
- 25:36you an assignment.
- 25:38I want you to complete the assignment test
- 25:41privately.
- 25:42Remember it's vision, effort, behavior, and ownership.
- 25:49Do not score your partner and do not
- 25:52diagnose them and do not use it as
- 25:55ammunition in an argument.
- 25:57Answer honestly.
- 26:00And then I want you to write this
- 26:01question.
- 26:02What part of my future have I been
- 26:06postponing while waiting for someone else to change?
- 26:10Sit with that.
- 26:12And then what I want you to do
- 26:15is choose one responsible action that's within your
- 26:20control.
- 26:22One phone call, one account review, one class,
- 26:28one business step, one financial question, one hour
- 26:35of research, one ownership decision.
- 26:40That's enough.
- 26:43So before we close, I want you to
- 26:46say this with me.
- 26:47I can love deeply without abandoning myself.
- 26:53My ambition is not an insult to everybody
- 26:57else.
- 26:58My future deserves participation.
- 27:03My goals deserve a plan.
- 27:06I will not build my entire future around
- 27:09another adult eventually changing.
- 27:12I will learn what I need to learn.
- 27:16I will understand what carries my name.
- 27:21I will protect what I built.
- 27:25I will choose ownership over avoidance and I
- 27:30will keep creating options.
- 27:33There is one final sentence I want to
- 27:36leave you with.
- 27:37You are allowed to love someone without handing
- 27:41them veto power over your future.
- 27:44That doesn't mean you stop communicating.
- 27:47It means you start participating fully in the
