Latest / The 47 Morning Update with Ben Ferguson / The Butler Files: What the Biden FBI Kept Hidden for Two Years
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: In that investigation, I think we looked at some 27 devices,
- 0:06Speaker 1: exfiltrated all the data off of them, looked for connections
- 0:09Speaker 1: to individuals in America and overseas, and we found no
- 0:12Speaker 1: evidence that that individual was literally even speaking to any
- 0:17Speaker 1: other human being other than his parents who he resided with.
- 0:21Speaker 2: And so.
- 0:22Speaker 1: That's sort of where we're at.
- 0:23Speaker 3: You're listening to the 47 Morning Update with Ben Ferguson.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Good Wednesday morning.
- 0:28Speaker 5: It's nice to have you with us on the 47
- 0:30Speaker 5: Morning Update. And we start with explosive new details about
- 0:33Speaker 5: the gunman who tried to assassinate Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
- 0:37Speaker 5: A secret alias, yeah, several of them, suspicious gun purchases,
- 0:41Speaker 5: and an anonymous donor who paid to cremate his body.
- 0:45Speaker 5: So what did investigators know, and why are we only
- 0:49Speaker 5: learning about it two years later? I've got all the
- 0:51Speaker 5: details for you, and I'm going to break it down.
- 0:54Speaker 5: Before we get to that, so many brands today claim

- 2:30Speaker 5: That's patriotmobile.com slash BEN47 or 972-PATRIOT and make that switch
- 2:37Speaker 5: right now. It's the 47 Morning Update and it starts
- 2:40Speaker 5: right now.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Story number one.
- 2:42Speaker 5: More than two years after President Donald Trump came within
- 2:46Speaker 5: inches of being killed on a stage in Butler, Pennsylvania.
- 2:50Speaker 5: We are learning significant new details about the 20-year-old gunman,
- 2:54Speaker 5: Thomas Matthew Crooks. Details that raise new questions about what
- 2:59Speaker 5: investigators knew, when did they know it, and why so
- 3:03Speaker 5: much information took this long to become public. Now, the
- 3:08Speaker 5: Attorney General, Todd Blanche, confirmed on Tuesday that the FBI
- 3:12Speaker 5: has uncovered additional information about the shooter, specifically about his
- 3:17Speaker 5: background and history that was not previously known publicly. In fact,
- 3:22Speaker 5: hundreds of pages of FBI material have also been turned
- 3:25Speaker 5: over to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley as part
- 3:29Speaker 5: of the continuing congressional investigation. And some of what is
- 3:33Speaker 5: emerging was extraordinary. First, investigators learned that Crooks was using
- 3:39Speaker 5: aliases well before the shooting. According to the records, Crooks
- 3:43Speaker 5: had packages delivered under the names Bob Dole. Yes, that's
- 3:47Speaker 5: the name of the late Republican senator and presidential nominee.
- 3:51Speaker 5: His father reportedly told investigators that his son would retrieve
- 3:55Speaker 5: packages addressed to that alias before his father returned home
- 3:59Speaker 5: from working late. This adds detail to something the FBI
- 4:04Speaker 5: had previously acknowledged. Beginning in the spring of 2023, Crooks
- 4:07Speaker 5: made more than 25 firearms-related purchases online. using aliases and
- 4:16Speaker 5: during the first half of 2024 he also made six
- 4:20Speaker 5: online purchases involving chemical precursors that investigators say were used
- 4:26Speaker 5: and the explosive devices later recovered from his car and
- 4:30Speaker 5: home reuters is also now reporting that the newly disclosed
- 4:35Speaker 5: records say that crooks purchased parts and tools through amazon
- 4:39Speaker 5: intended to increase his rifles capacity So this wasn't simply
- 4:44Speaker 5: a kid who woke up on a Saturday morning, grabbed
- 4:47Speaker 5: a rifle, and drove to a political rally. The FBI's
- 4:51Speaker 5: own timeline has shown extensive preparation. In fact, Crooks registered
- 4:57Speaker 5: for the Trump rally on July 6th of 2024, the
- 5:00Speaker 5: same day. Investigators say he searched online for how far
- 5:05Speaker 5: Lee Harvey Oswald was from JFK when Kennedy was assassinated.
- 5:10Speaker 5: The next day, July 7th, Crooks drove to the Butler
- 5:13Speaker 5: rally site and spent roughly 20 minutes around the area,
- 5:17Speaker 5: including near the AGR buildings. The FBI characterized that trip
- 5:22Speaker 5: as an apparent advanced surveillance mission. Then, on the day
- 5:27Speaker 5: of the rally, he returned. He flew a drone near
- 5:31Speaker 5: the rally site for 11 minutes. Later, police identified him
- 5:35Speaker 5: as a suspicious person. Officers even photographed him. He was
- 5:40Speaker 5: observed using a range finder and eventually climbed onto the
- 5:44Speaker 5: AGR complex roof, where he obtained a direct line of
- 5:47Speaker 5: sight towards President Donald Trump. We know what happened next.
- 5:52Speaker 5: At approximately 6.11 p.m., a local police officer was boosted
- 5:57Speaker 5: onto the roof and encountered Crooks. Crooks pointed his rifle
- 6:01Speaker 5: at the officer. The officer dropped back down. And roughly
- 6:05Speaker 5: 25 to 30 seconds later, that is when Crooks opened
- 6:08Speaker 5: fire on the president. Eight rounds and one striking Donald
- 6:13Speaker 5: Trump in the ear. Rally attendee Corey Comparator was killed.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Two other men were seriously wounded. A Secret Service counter
- 6:23Speaker 5: sniper then killed Crooks. But the new records also paint
- 6:27Speaker 5: a more detailed picture of the shooter himself. In fact,
- 6:31Speaker 5: here's part of how Fox News Channel talked about the
- 6:34Speaker 5: new information that was being released.
- 6:38Speaker 7: Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley wants more answers. He is
- 6:41Speaker 7: digging in hard on this. And he has shared some
- 6:44Speaker 7: yet to be released information. FBI files about the would-be
- 6:48Speaker 7: assassin Thomas Crooks with the New York Post. So some
- 6:52Speaker 7: people are getting to see these documents, and they include
- 6:55Speaker 7: extensive interviews with Thomas Crooks' father. He described his son
- 7:00Speaker 7: having difficulty expressing his emotions.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Here's a quote.
- 7:05Speaker 7: When Thomas was born, he did not scream, and he
- 7:07Speaker 7: was always quiet from that point. We never really had
- 7:11Speaker 7: a father-son bond. He also details a growing obsession with guns.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Andy recounts Thomas asking if he would need to undergo
- 7:20Speaker 7: a background check to buy a Glock pistol. He also
- 7:24Speaker 7: says he witnessed his son on camera in the family's garage, quote, Arming,
- 7:30Speaker 7: arms going up and down, frantically talking and not making
- 7:34Speaker 7: any sense while cleaning one of his guns.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Now, there's so much new evidence that has come out
- 7:40Speaker 5: of what has just been released, and it's completely blown
- 7:43Speaker 5: up the Thomas Crook's narrative. By the way, as part
- 7:47Speaker 5: of what we've learned, there was two mystery men that
- 7:50Speaker 5: were with him at a gun store weeks before the
- 7:52Speaker 5: Butler shootings. Another unidentified man we also learned trained with
- 7:57Speaker 5: him the day before the shooting. Even more damning, an
- 8:01Speaker 5: anonymous donor. Yes, an anonymous donor paid for the cremation. Now,
- 8:07Speaker 5: who paid and what are they hiding? This is just
- 8:10Speaker 5: some of the information that we're just now finding out about.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Even Fox News' Brett Baer saying how frustrating it is
- 8:17Speaker 5: to be in the media and the lack of information
- 8:19Speaker 5: we received over the last two years.
- 8:22Speaker 8: There's a story that's always frustrated me because it's been
- 8:24Speaker 8: so long, and we finally are getting a.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Little bit more information, but not a lot.
- 8:29Speaker 8: The documents say that Thomas Crookes had 27 devices. 27
- 8:33Speaker 8: devices they combed through?
- 8:35Speaker 4: I have four, maybe. It's a crazy story.
- 8:39Speaker 9: I mean, first of all, Donald Trump has suffered more
- 8:41Speaker 9: assassination attempts than any president in American history. And the
- 8:44Speaker 9: idea that this is two years on and we know
- 8:46Speaker 9: almost nothing about this guy or what his motivations were
- 8:50Speaker 9: is ridiculous. On the other hand, we're still debating the
- 8:53Speaker 9: motivations of Lee Harvey Oswald. There are movies made about
- 8:57Speaker 9: Lee Harvey Oswald and conspiracy theories about him. He actually
- 9:00Speaker 9: succeeded in killing a president. So it's not unprecedented that
- 9:03Speaker 9: we would be debating for decades the reason why someone
- 9:07Speaker 9: tried to kill an American president.
- 9:08Speaker 8: But it is a shame. Here is the FBI director
- 9:10Speaker 8: on this.
- 9:12Speaker 1: In that investigation, I think we looked at some 27 devices,
- 9:17Speaker 1: exfiltrated all the data off of them, looked for connections
- 9:20Speaker 1: to individuals in America and overseas, and we found no
- 9:23Speaker 1: evidence that that individual was literally even speaking to any
- 9:28Speaker 1: other human being other than his parents who he resided with.
- 9:32Speaker 1: And so that's sort of where we're at.
- 9:34Speaker 6: Seth?
- 9:35Speaker 10: I mean, that's just remarkable to hear. I'm with you.
- 9:37Speaker 10: There's so many questions. It's remarkable to be at this
- 9:40Speaker 10: place and still really have so few answers, even when
- 9:42Speaker 10: you have, you know, Trump's own selected leadership at the
- 9:45Speaker 10: DOJ and FBI, who are, of course, prioritizing getting to
- 9:48Speaker 10: the bottom of this. And, you know, they can criticize
- 9:50Speaker 10: the past, you know, leadership of the FBI and DOJ,
- 9:53Speaker 10: but we still don't have any questions on this, any
- 9:56Speaker 10: answers to these questions.
- 9:57Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 9:58Speaker 8: Yeah, is the FBI director up in the Senate Judiciary,
- 10:04Speaker 8: have been also frustrating because it's sometimes just a yelling
- 10:07Speaker 8: past each other.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Now, you go back to just some of what we learned.
- 10:11Speaker 5: The father described his own son as extremely intelligent, but
- 10:15Speaker 5: intensely isolated. According to documents, his father said his son, quote,
- 10:20Speaker 5: never identified anyone as a friend throughout middle school.
- 10:24Speaker 4: And high school.
- 10:25Speaker 5: He interacted with classmates, but apparently told his father they
- 10:28Speaker 5: weren't actually any of his friends. These newly unclassified material
- 10:33Speaker 5: reportedly describes him as someone who rarely displayed strong emotion
- 10:37Speaker 5: and was difficult even with his own family to read.
- 10:40Speaker 5: His family told investigators the assassination attempt came as a
- 10:43Speaker 5: complete surprise. And then there's another strange disclosure. According to
- 10:48Speaker 5: the records, an anonymous donor paid for the cremation. The
- 10:52Speaker 5: documents do not publicly identify that donor. They indicate the
- 10:56Speaker 5: Crooks family apparently lacked the money for funeral arrangements. And
- 11:00Speaker 5: a family attorney told investigators that an unidentified donor covered
- 11:03Speaker 5: the cremation.
- 11:05Speaker 4: The fact is, by.
- 11:06Speaker 5: The way, particularly noteworthy because questions had already been raised
- 11:10Speaker 5: about how quickly Crook's remains were released. The FBI has
- 11:14Speaker 5: defended the process. It says an autopsy was performed.
- 11:17Speaker 4: The necessary evidence was collected.
- 11:19Speaker 5: And Pennsylvania authorities and the FBI agreed the remains could
- 11:22Speaker 5: be released to the family. The autopsy determined that Crooks
- 11:26Speaker 5: died from a single gunshot wound to the head and
- 11:29Speaker 5: toxicology testing was negative for alcohol and drug abuse. Now,
- 11:33Speaker 5: there are also other details that have emerged through separate
- 11:36Speaker 5: FBI records released as well. Records obtained through litigation earlier
- 11:41Speaker 5: this year include a first responders account that a SWAT
- 11:44Speaker 5: officer removed a gray remote device from an antenna and
- 11:48Speaker 5: a cell phone from Crooks pocket on the roof. The
- 11:52Speaker 5: FBI had previously disclosed that explosive devices capable of detonating
- 11:56Speaker 5: were discovered inside of Crook's vehicle, although investigators said their
- 12:00Speaker 5: receivers were switched off. And after all of this, the aliases,
- 12:04Speaker 5: the gun purchases, the explosive materials, the Oswald search, the
- 12:09Speaker 5: reconnaissance trip, the drone flight, the range finder, and the
- 12:14Speaker 5: preparations that were methodical, There remains a major question that
- 12:18Speaker 5: is still unanswered. Why? More than two years later, investigators
- 12:23Speaker 5: say they still have not established Crook's motive. The investigation
- 12:27Speaker 5: has concluded that Crook's acted alone. And what's even more
- 12:31Speaker 5: interesting is the investigations have concluded that that crooks acted
- 12:35Speaker 5: alone and have not produced evidence that Democrats or any
- 12:39Speaker 5: political organization directed the attack. But President Trump has alleged
- 12:43Speaker 5: that the shooting was a Democratic plot. So are there
- 12:46Speaker 5: a lot of unanswered questions? Yeah. Jesse Waters on Fox
- 12:50Speaker 5: News brought up a few of those as well.
- 12:52Speaker 6: Seconds.
- 12:53Speaker 12: That's all a bullet needed to almost blow Trump's head off.
- 12:55Speaker 12: But for two years, we didn't really know exactly why. Tonight,
- 12:59Speaker 12: we know some more. We've got the Butler files, or
- 13:02Speaker 12: what we're allowed to see. and they start before Thomas
- 13:05Speaker 12: Crooks could even walk. When Thomas was born, he did
- 13:08Speaker 12: not scream, and he was always quiet from that point on,
- 13:11Speaker 12: his father Matthew told the feds. 20 years later, Crooks
- 13:15Speaker 12: took the shot, and the rifle that nearly killed the
- 13:18Speaker 12: president came straight out of his dad's gun safe. The
- 13:21Speaker 12: dad didn't fully trust Thomas. He changed the code after
- 13:24Speaker 12: catching his son, watching him over his shoulder, but then
- 13:27Speaker 12: handed him the rifle the morning of the shooting, thinking
- 13:30Speaker 12: he was headed to the range. That range is where
- 13:33Speaker 12: he trained to be a sniper. He started out a
- 13:36Speaker 12: terrible shot, couldn't even hit the paper. Five years later,
- 13:40Speaker 12: he could hit a target from over 100 yards out.
- 13:42Speaker 12: His dad noticed, and when he asked why he was
- 13:46Speaker 12: shooting out so far, Crooks answered like a killer. He
- 13:49Speaker 12: wanted to see how far he could shoot with rudimentary sights.
- 13:54Speaker 12: and the kid who supposedly left no digital footprint, he
- 13:58Speaker 12: was quietly ordering rifle upgrades under a fake name.
- 14:02Speaker 4: You ready? Bob Dole. That was the alias.
- 14:06Speaker 12: The packages shipped under that name, and they contained parts
- 14:10Speaker 12: to make his dad's rifle more lethal.
- 14:12Speaker 4: And that's not all.
- 14:14Speaker 12: Days after Butler, an anonymous donor quietly paid to have Crooks'
- 14:18Speaker 12: body cremated before Congress could even take a second look. Now,
- 14:22Speaker 12: that detail apparently just buried in a one-line note at
- 14:26Speaker 12: the very bottom of the FBI file. So five years
- 14:30Speaker 12: at the range, fake name, rifle from dad, and a
- 14:32Speaker 12: stranger who paid to burn the body.
- 14:35Speaker 4: And the motive?
- 14:37Speaker 12: Somehow still a complete mystery. Trump knows who to blame. Quote,
- 14:41Speaker 12: everybody knows the crooked Joe Biden FBI didn't do what
- 14:44Speaker 12: they should have with respect to the lunatic who shot
- 14:47Speaker 12: me in Butler, PA. By the time I got into
- 14:50Speaker 12: office on January 20th, most of the information was missing, altered, corrupted,
- 14:55Speaker 12: or gone. New info was just found. Why wasn't it
- 15:00Speaker 12: seen long ago? This was all a Democrat plot to
- 15:03Speaker 12: get me out of the election that failed.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Now, President Trump is absolutely right. There are legitimate, unanswered
- 15:11Speaker 5: questions surrounding Butler. There were not only catastrophic security failures...
- 15:17Speaker 5: And there's this newly disclosed information about the shooter that
- 15:21Speaker 5: the American public is only now seeing.
- 15:24Speaker 4: So what are they hiding?
- 15:25Speaker 6: Right.
- 15:26Speaker 5: That's the question everyone's asking. And by the way, there's
- 15:29Speaker 5: still no publicly established motive. Those are the facts. And
- 15:34Speaker 5: perhaps the biggest question is this. Why is it that
- 15:38Speaker 5: it took us this long just to get to this point?
- 15:41Speaker 5: And also, how can a 20 year old spend months
- 15:44Speaker 5: buying gun equipment under aliases, including Bob Dole, obtain bomb
- 15:49Speaker 5: making materials, research presidential assassinations, conduct surveillance of a presidential
- 15:56Speaker 5: campaign rally? Fly a drone around that rally while it's happening.
- 16:02Speaker 5: Get photographed by the police as a suspicious person. Then
- 16:06Speaker 5: climb onto a roof with a rifle and still get
- 16:09Speaker 5: eight shots off at a former president of the United
- 16:12Speaker 5: States of America. Two years later, we as Americans are
- 16:17Speaker 5: still learning important facts about Butler. And we're still waiting
- 16:21Speaker 5: for the complete story. But if you go back to
- 16:24Speaker 5: what President Trump said, he's absolutely right. We didn't get
- 16:28Speaker 5: all the information. In fact, a lot of the information
- 16:31Speaker 5: disappeared before he was able to get sworn in as
- 16:36Speaker 5: the 47th president of the United States of America. That
- 16:40Speaker 5: is a really big problem. And when it comes back
- 16:43Speaker 5: to the issue of trust, and specifically trust in the
- 16:47Speaker 5: deep state. Well, now you understand why no one trusts
- 16:51Speaker 5: the deep state. Because there's so many things like this
- 16:54Speaker 5: that happen where answers should.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Be pretty easy to get.
- 16:58Speaker 5: Information should be easily available to get out to the public.
- 17:03Speaker 5: And it shouldn't take two plus years for us to
- 17:06Speaker 5: get to where we are right now.
- 17:08Speaker 3: Pause.
- 17:09Speaker 6: Pause.
- 17:11Speaker 5: Which brings me to something else I want you to hear.
- 17:14Speaker 5: Senator Mike Lee was speaking with the FBI Director Kash Patel.
- 17:18Speaker 5: And here is what the Republican Senator from Utah had
- 17:21Speaker 5: to say.
- 17:22Speaker 11: We're now a little more than two years after the
- 17:33Speaker 11: fortunately unsuccessful assassination attempt on President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
- 17:39Speaker 11: And yet as we sit here today, I think neither
- 17:43Speaker 11: the American people nor this committee can claim to have
- 17:46Speaker 11: anything approaching a robust understanding of Thomas Crooks, who he was,
- 17:52Speaker 11: how he came as close to succeeding as he did
- 17:54Speaker 11: that day. Thank heavens that he didn't. But what can
- 17:59Speaker 11: you tell us about what you've learned about Thomas Crooks
- 18:02Speaker 11: and the status of that investigation and the timing of
- 18:06Speaker 11: any release to the public?
- 18:07Speaker 1: Well, The FBI's review of that matter is in support
- 18:11Speaker 1: of the United States Secret Service, who are obviously the
- 18:14Speaker 1: lead because it relates to a matter involving the president
- 18:16Speaker 1: of the United States, a Secret Service protectee. We've put
- 18:20Speaker 1: out and provided all the information to not only the
- 18:23Speaker 1: Secret Service but relevant committees of jurisdiction that we are
- 18:26Speaker 1: lawfully able to release. As you said, thankfully, that assassination
- 18:31Speaker 1: attempt was unsuccessful. And I would defer to my colleagues
- 18:35Speaker 1: at DHS in terms of the security measures surrounding that
- 18:38Speaker 1: incidence and what upgrades they've made. We will continue to,
- 18:42Speaker 1: as we did in that investigation, I think we looked
- 18:44Speaker 1: at some 27 devices, exfiltrated all the data off of them,
- 18:50Speaker 1: looked for connections to individuals in America and overseas, and
- 18:54Speaker 1: we found no evidence that that individual was literally even
- 18:58Speaker 1: speaking to any other human being other than his parents
- 19:02Speaker 1: who he resided with.
- 19:03Speaker 5: So we know he lived with his parents, but why
- 19:05Speaker 5: did it take us so long just to find that out?
- 19:08Speaker 5: And Todd Blanche was asked by a reporter at the
- 19:10Speaker 5: White House today about the investigation as well.
- 19:12Speaker 4: And here's what he had to say.
- 19:13Speaker 6: Earlier today, President Trump said that there was new evidence
- 19:17Speaker 6: in the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. He said it
- 19:20Speaker 6: was a Democratic plot. Moments later, Kash Patel testified that
- 19:24Speaker 6: the shooter wasn't speaking to anyone other than his parents.
- 19:28Speaker 6: Can you please explain both how this was a Democratic
- 19:32Speaker 6: plot and what this new evidence is? And a second question,
- 19:35Speaker 6: which is in the same post, he said that Christopher
- 19:38Speaker 6: Wray should be punished for his lack of oversight during
- 19:42Speaker 6: this investigation. Is the Justice Department considering bringing charges against
- 19:45Speaker 6: Chris Wray?
- 19:46Speaker 4: So the Department of Justice doesn't punish, by the way. So, look, I.
- 19:52Speaker 2: I was with President Trump during the time period before
- 19:55Speaker 2: and after the attempted assassination attempt on his life, and
- 19:59Speaker 2: he was shot. He was a victim.
- 20:00Speaker 4: There was an innocent man killed.
- 20:02Speaker 2: There were other people who were very seriously injured when
- 20:05Speaker 2: that happened. What President Trump said today about the new information,
- 20:09Speaker 2: and this new information is information that that we found,
- 20:12Speaker 2: that the FBI found, that produced to the Senate in
- 20:15Speaker 2: response to inquiries that they had. It is new information
- 20:18Speaker 2: about the shooter and about his background, about his history,
- 20:24Speaker 2: and that's stuff that we didn't know before. So that's
- 20:26Speaker 2: the new information. As far as the president's frustration with
- 20:29Speaker 2: the FBI, I was there with him.
- 20:32Speaker 3: I lived it.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I mean, you have a situation where it's not really
- 20:35Speaker 2: clear what the leadership of the FBI were doing in
- 20:38Speaker 2: the weeks and months ahead of the attempted assassination to
- 20:42Speaker 2: protect President Trump. That's the same organization that was simultaneously
- 20:46Speaker 2: trying to put him in prison until he dies. So
- 20:49Speaker 2: his frustration and concern about what the former director was
- 20:53Speaker 2: doing is something that is not new.
- 20:56Speaker 4: He said that for a very long time.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I was with him during the investigation and before he
- 21:01Speaker 2: was elected president. trying to understand what happened and why.
- 21:05Speaker 2: And Director Patel has undertaken a Herculean effort to go
- 21:10Speaker 2: through all the documents and understand what was missed, if anything,
- 21:14Speaker 2: and to provide anything that hadn't come forward to the
- 21:17Speaker 2: American people to the American people.
- 21:19Speaker 4: And that's what he's done.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Okay, last question.
- 21:21Speaker 5: So there you have it. A lot more questions. Thank
- 21:24Speaker 5: goodness we're finally starting to get some answers. And the
- 21:26Speaker 5: president is obviously demanding we get a lot more information
- 21:30Speaker 5: moving forward.
